NEWSLETTER FEATURE

What do you remember from the Melbourne Cup? With November comes one of the most celebrated sporting events of Australian history – The Melbourne Cup. The race was first run in 1861 and has since been fondly named “The Race that Stops as Nation”.

While Melbourne is the only lucky city that gets to enjoy a public holiday on this day, Queenslanders still firmly take part in the tradition. Whether it be at work, school or down at the local RSL or pub, everyone stops to watch the two-mile thoroughbred horse race where many iconic courses and their jockeys have been crowned champion. One of the most famous winners of the cup was undoubtedly Makybe Diva, a horse that won the infamous race three years in a row, a feat never

completed by any other. Makybe and his team rose to fame and is the highest stakes-earner in Australian racing history. This beauty of a horse has finished with winnings of more than $14 million upon her retirement. Another notable cup day was in 2015 when Michelle Payne took out the title, riding Prince of Penzance to become the first female jockey to win the event. Ms Payne became an inspiration to young girls with their hearts firmly set on rising to the top of the racing world.

The Melbourne Cup has seen its fair share of adversity triumphs but this has been coupled with a few disasters and scandals as well. But no matter what happens on the first Tuesday of each November, Australians love for the cup has never faded. Orianna will be hosting their own celebrations for Melbourne Cup Day! Get in contact with Prue to discuss the activities taking part on the day. 

HEALTH

Looking after your feet Thanks to Back in Motion Bribie As we get older our feet go through some natural changes due to the amount of hard work they have gone through in our lives. Our feet actually change shape as we age. Our fat pads tend to reduce, joints and bone alignments change, circulation decreases, skin becomes thin and dry, ligaments lengthen and tendons tighten. Complications can then arise that also affect our feet such as arthritis and diabetes and you are more at risk of injury. Now I am sure you’re reading this and thinking it’s all doom and gloom but there is plenty that can be done to limit these changes and it’s all down to looking after your feet. Don’t let them be a burden.

WHAT CAN BE DONE! Most people only ever think about their feet when something is wrong or worrying how they’re going to look in them lovely new sandals you just bought. But the best care for your feet is to get into a routine to stop problems arising in the first place.

HYDRATION Drink plenty of water, use appropriate foot cream recommended by a health care practitioner or pharmacist, try to limit coffee and tea intake, if you like a brew too much then make sure you make up for it with your water intake. If you are really struggling with dry skin apply cream and put on a cotton sock at night time.

FOOTWEAR Make sure your shoes are supportive and have plenty of cushioning to make up for that loss of fatty padding under your feet. If the shoes still don’t have enough support then maybe think about adding an orthotic into the shoe which will help spread the pressure across your foot and control any abnormal walking tendencies. For those who have houses with tiled floors, it is best to avoid walking barefoot – wear a supportive pair of thongs/Birkenstocks/sandals or even a supportive pair of slippers while at home. Supportive footwear is key.

EXERCISE Keep active, keep moving your feet – swimming, cycling, walking. If you don’t move it, you lose it. The less weight going through your feet the less pressure they are under.

GENERAL CARE Again keep moisturising, file down any hard skin after a bath or shower while the skin is soft. Cut your nails straight across to avoid ingrown toe nails. If you have any problems that you believe you can’t deal and need advice on with then just make an appointment. We do a free initial assessment at Back in Motion. Call us on 3408 6608.

APPS OF THE MONTH 1. Miiskin

What the Feng Shui?

The energy flow in your home can really impact your health and wellbeing according to the Chinese system of laws known as Feng shui. But what really is Feng shui, how can you implement these laws in your own home and why the Feng shui would you anyway? Feng shui is ultimately about harmony with nature. The term in English translates as “wind-water” and while there is no scientific evidence that Feng shui’s claims are real, it is a popular subject in the home building and interior design industry as more new-age forms of feng shui emerge. Here are a few points for everyday living.

CLEAR THE ENTRY WAYS

Symbols guide humans in our everyday lives. Ensure the symbols in your home are promoting prosperity. Replace symbols in your home that accentuate challenges with items you want to attract in your own life.

LIGHT

STORAGE UNDER THE BED

FACE GUESTS Working spaces including the desk in your office should always face the door, never away from it. This is so your back is not towards entry points where your guests may arrive through both for safety and out of politeness.

2. Uber Schedule a ride just by tapping the car icon on your phone and confirming your trip details! Then all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the ride.

REMOVE NEGATIVE SYMBOLISM

Your home should always look fresh and inviting. Make sure the entry ways to your home are free from clutter. It may also affect the chi if you enter your home and are confronted with a wall or other objects. If you do have a wall at your entry way, install a mirror.

Make the most of the natural light wherever possible. If not possible, install dimmers or multiple light sources.

This fantastic new application for iPhone and Android allows you to take photos of your skin and moles and more easily track your spots changes. In recent times you would have to document the changes in your skin with pen and paper however this app allows you to keep a timeline and you can compare and contrast changes over time and consult easily with your GP.

If you can avoid it, try not to store items under your bed unless it is clean linen or clothes that are stored. This is the energy that you are absorbing whilst sleeping. Some may not feel as though Feng shui can influence their wellbeing, however there are common sense applications that take little effort that you may find benefit the comfortability you experience in your home. 

3. Goodreads Just finished a really good book and want to tell others about it or struggling to find something else to read? Discover and share your favourite books on the Goodreads app. Don’t purchase a book solely based on it’s cover anymore, find out what others think first!

Meet your neighbours Greg + Susan We met on an around Australia camping trip 30 years ago and were married 12 months later. Greg is from Bonbeach a bayside suburb of Melbourne and Susan is from Lara, near Geelong, at the foot of the You Yangs National Park. We have two children, Caroline and Mitchell and have spent most of our married life living on the Mornington Peninsula up to about 4 years ago when we decided to move to Queenslandon our retirement. Greg was an accountant working in public practice and Susan was a nurse mainly working in rehab. On moving to Queensland we initally rented in Tugun on the Gold Coast before purchasing a property at Burleigh Heads. Wanting to look for a quieter place to live we decided on looking at an over 50's style village that would offer security and have people around our age that would have similar likes and values. After doing some research we found Orianna at Sandstone Point and as Greg has had several stays on Bribie Island at a family friends house, the area was not totally foreign to him. He and Susan also had a holiday at Bribie before they were married. We were one of the first to move into Orianna in late June 2017 with our pet cat Tinkerbelle and in that short period have made many friends as more residents move into the complex. Orianna stage one was chosen by us because of its boutique size, not the 400 lot complexes of other retirement villages, and the house we have purchased is close to the future amenities including the recreation centre, swimming pool and bowling green. Also because we have lived near water all our lives the proximity to the Pumicestone Passage and Woorim surf beach was also a factor. Add in being walking distance to the Sandstone Hotel makes Orianna the perfect place to live as we are, as they say, “living the dream'. 
