Brush up on your swing in time for Golf Day Join Prue, Brett, Roly and George as they battle it out for the title of champions at the VMR Charity Golf Day! There’s nothing like a spot of golf to get your competitive engine revving and what better reason than for charity. Volunteer Marine Rescue Bribie Island will be hosting a 4 ball ambrose golf day on Friday 15th of September at the Bribie Island Golf Club and we’ll be there! Tee-off will be 11am sharp with players vying for some interesting prizes and of course the chance to be crowned this years’ winner! All money raised on the day will go towards the maintenance of rescue vessels that are on patrol every weekend and all public holidays across some 500 square miles from the Caloundra Bar through to Tangalooma in Moreton Bay and surrounds. All members of Bribie Island Marine Rescue are volunteers and give up their time to look out for the safety of others on the water.

This golf day is an event that is run by the organisation annually and includes competitions for nearest the pin, land in the boat and longest drive. If you would like to be a part of the golf day, please register your interest with one of our Orianna staff members to join in the fun! Those who aren’t the avid golfer are more than welcome to come along for a meal and a drink in support of Team Club Orianna. This day is just one of the many community activities that are organised in the Bribie Island area and Orianna residents are blessed to be close to many of these amazing facilities. So, brush up on your swing and your ball skills and register for this fun event and support an organisation who does great work in the community at the same time. 

WHAT IS FOUR BALL AMBROSE? This off-spin competition style is very popular as it allows all standards of golfers to mix and play together with equal enjoyment irrespective of ability. Four ball ambrose requires effective teamwork as only one score is recorded per hole – whichever was the best with your end score being adjusted for the handicap of the players in your team.

CLUB ORIANNA NEWSLETTER · SEPTEMBER 2017 EDITION

A WORD FROM PRUE Welcome to the 1st edition of Club Orianna News! The Club Orianna newsletter is made exclusively for you to keep you informed of what’s happening in your club! You will receive a new edition monthly containing information on community events, introducing you to your neighbours, a monthly re-cap and some updates on the progress of the resort. We are well on the way to building our community with six residents now settling into Orianna and plenty more to come. You may have noticed in the last month we have also had a change of location and outlook to our Sales Office so if you have friends wanting to find out more about the Orianna lifestyle, Karen is now available for a chat in the new sales office.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE This last month at Orianna we have seen an exciting milestone reached. The concrete slab that will form the foundation for fun at Orianna has been poured. The Recreation Centre will house the first class resort facilities available exclusively to residents of Orianna Resorts. Once completed, you can expect to see the following amenities coming to life.

We have also had some fun times over the last month with our trip to the RSL for trivia night. On the first week we came second to last and almost got the booby prize (but not quite). Roly Ong managed to win a prize, so all was not lost! The next week we stepped it up to 6th out of 12 teams – we are improving each week and it won’t be long before we are slaying the competition! A fantastic time was had at the local Strawberry Festival at Sandstone Point Hotel on the 19th of August where we even got to show off the awesome pontoon BBQ boat we’ll all be riding in soon! We are very excited for what is to come at Orianna and if you have anything you would like to share in the next Club Orianna News, please do let me know. This is our newsletter and we want you to make it our own.

No Name, No Luck

Terrible tales of the sea have haunted humans for thousands of years. One folklore that sends shivers down the spine of seamen is the bad luck associated with having a nameless boat. Old wives tales will tell of nameless boats at risk of provoking the Sea Gods and cursing the boat and its travellers with bad luck. However, there is a rational explanation for the theory behind these stories. The hint of truth surrounding these stories goes back to the days when boats were exclusively built for commercial or military purposes. In these times, changing the name on a vessel made it obvious that a large transaction had taken place, bringing 'unlucky' attention in the way of taxing authorities and other opportunists. Additionally, keeping the original name of a commercial vessel helped to maintain her status, easy identification and welcomeness in familiar ports alleviating any concerns of mistaken identity. The Club Orianna pontoon BBQ boat will be as safe as they come but we still need to give her a name! 

HAVE YO U R SAY

NAME THE PONTOON BBQ BOAT We’re inviting you to provide Orianna with suggestions as to what the new boat should be named, to make sure she has all the luck in the world. Submit your suggestions via your Community Manager and you may see your name on the side of the boat when she arrives!

HEALTH

The Benefits of Having a Furry Friend

No matter at what age, the benefits of regular contact with animals can help to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and increase physical activity among other things.

Humans are constantly worried about something. Whether it be the bills, children, parents or what the future holds in 10 years’ time. These thoughts, albeit natural and experienced by everyone are one of the main drivers for depression and anxiety in our lives.

In addition to this, there are many other health benefits to having a furry friend:

On the other hand, dogs and other pets don’t experience worry in the same way we do and live very much in the here and now. These feelings rub off on owners and can help reduce the worries of the future experienced more frequently by the mature population.

Increased physical activity

Companionship

Left-over disposal

Reduced stress levels

Sense of responsibility and routine

Increased social interaction

Security

Spending more time outdoors

Orianna is a pet friendly community that encourages residents to include

their pets in life decisions. If you don’t already have a furry friend taking up a spot in your home, you can talk to your Community Manager about what types of dogs or cats are welcome at Orianna. Ready to find your furry friend? Adopt don’t shop. There are 100s of pets abandoned by their previous owners every week and pounds fill up very quickly. Choose to adopt a rescue pet and support local rescue groups in the Bribie community. Visit your local RSPCA at Dakabin to cuddle some potential furry friends. 

RESIDENT RECIPE

1. Call the Midwife This show follows mostly female characters and deals with female problems, so probably not something that will tickle the fancy of the male residents. The stories are heartbreaking, uplifting and romantic all at once. A good choice for afternoon viewing with a cuppa.

2. Band of Brothers

NO BAKE NUTELLA ANZAC BISCUIT CAKE

Steven Spielberg’s 10 part miniseries follows the journey of the parachuting “Easy Company” during World War II. This is a show that will remind all viewers of the many lives lost and the indescribable memories these many men and women brought home with them.

So simple – just mix, set and enjoy this no bake cake by resident Glenis Ong.

Serves 12 · Preparation 15 mins (+ 8 hours chilling)

INGREDIENTS

© Band of Brothers,

½ cup (165g) Nutella

1 tbs cocoa powder

250g Mascarpone

300g pkt Coles Bakery Anzac Biscuits (12 pack)

2/3 cup (160ml) thickened cream

METHOD Step 1 Place Nutella, mascarpone, cream and cocoa powder in a bowl. Use a balloon whisk to gently stir until just combined.

HBO

3. The Intouchables (French) This movie is based on a true story of an unlikely friendship that develops between a wealthy quadriplegic and his care taker, who was just released from prison. This successful film is tragic, funny and heart-warming.

Step 2 Spread a little Nutella mixture along a rectangular serving plate (covered with baking paper as per picture).

Step 3 Spread 1 side of each biscuit with some of the remaining Nutella mixture. Starting from one end, stand 1 biscuit on its edge on the Nutella mixture on the serving plate. Repeat with remaining biscuits to form log.

Step 4 Spread remaining Nutella mixture over top and side of log. Loosely cover with plastic wrap. Place in fridge for 8 hours or overnight to chill.

Step 5 Cut the cake diagonally into slices to serve. Serve the dark and white chocolate curls. 
