Today I started

MY NEW JOB When I picture my 16-year-old-self walking into the Close Up head office, praying I get accepted for a work experience role, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would be sitting here today writing this letter as Publisher and Editor. I was in awe of all the magazines displayed on the "Close Up wall of fame", the bubbly, fun atmosphere and the enthusiasm and drive in the room. I knew straight away I had found my passion, and although it took me a while to find my place as the youngest member of the team, Andrea held me closely under her wing for the entire 9 years, and for that I could never repay her.

COVER INTERVIEW

We caught up with the presenter and mum of three to discuss her debut fashion collection, designed exclusively for Next. How does it feel to try your hand at designing clothes? The project definitely took me by surprise and has been a real dream come true. Designing clothes is something I never initially thought I would be able to do, as I didn’t train in that field and I’m not naturally gifted with a pen and paper but I think it’s important to try new things and keep pushing myself. I don’t like to get complacent – sometimes you need to be scared in life, but in a good way. Can you talk us through the design process? It was quite daunting in the beginning as I’d never done anything like that before but thankfully I worked really closely with my stylist, Hannah Macleod, who is a wizard with clothes. We sat as a team with the Next designers and as much as we took our steer from them, as they know exactly what they’re doing and what their customer likes, they were also great at letting Hannah and I put our thoughts across for what we wanted to get out of it, too. It was a really equal collaboration and so exciting to watch how the designers at Next work – a real learning experience. Where did you find inspiration for the collection? I found it everywhere; in Hannah’s head, my head, the Next designer’s heads, in my house, from friends, from travelling to different places, magazines. I’m so lucky to be able to go to lots of different places and it’s always inspiring – you just have to open your eyes and look and things just jump out at you. Even in a home magazine you could see a cushion and think that print would be amazing for a jumpsuit or a beach throw. I think there’s inspiration everywhere, you just have to be switched on to see it.

The project “definitely took

me by surprise and has been a real dream come true.

Emma Willis Button Through Short Set £28

What has been the biggest learning curve in the process? I’ve learned that just because you think something is going to work, it doesn’t mean that it will. And if a piece of clothing works on your body, it may not work on somebody else’s. For example, I prefer a shorter sleeve on a T-shirt but some people prefer to cover their upper arms, or I don’t like really short shorts and neither does my mum, so making sure the range appealed to a variety of ages and sizes was really at the forefront of our minds when putting all the pieces of the collection together. Who do you envisage wearing the range? I’m hoping that everybody – any age or size – can and will wear the range. It’s classic and simple and has that masculine/ feminine feel, which I think is really easy to wear. What are your favourite pieces from the collection? I love the pyjamas and I’m really pleased with the beachwear offering, too which interlinks piece. I also love the halter-neck navy top paired with the wide-leg trousers and I truly believe I’ve made the perfect T-shirt.

1

Everyone enjoys a few sugary treats at Easter and a little more than usual won’t hurt, but just be conscious of the overall amount you indulge on to limit potential long-term damage.

2

After a meal is the best time for some chocolate egg rather than snacking, as this will limit the amount of time your enamel is exposed to harmful bacteria caused by sugary acids.

3

Avoid sticky and sour sweets that contain several types of complex acids and tend to be chewy, meaning they are likely to stuck to your teeth for longer than a hard sweet.

4 5

Drink plenty of water to help prevent dry mouth and keep the flow of bacteria-fighting saliva in your mouth.

6

Switch to a toothpaste the contains plenty of fluoride to help naturally strengthen tooth enamel and prevent decay.

7

Make sure you are still brushing twice a day, rinsing with an alcohol-free mouthwash and flossing (ideally after each meal) for the best defence against damage.

8

Book in for an appointment with a dental hygienist after the Easter period so that your teeth and gums get an expert clean after all the choc!

9

Try swapping milk and white chocolate for dark as it contains less sugar and there is even evidence to suggest it can be effective at fighting tooth decay.

10

Wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your teeth after a sweet treat to give your enamel a change to re-harden and be at its most protective.

If you know you and your family tend to up your sugar intake at Easter, schedule a check-up with your dentist for as soon after as possible to catch any early signs of damage.

Hello

YELLOW H&M

Hit refresh on your wardrobe and get spring-ready with the High Street’s favourite colour trend, and the animal prints we are all still loving. This spring is the time to combine style with comfort; we’re talking midi skirts, boiler suits and every type of print you can think of. With high street favourites including Topshop, River Island, M&S, New Look, Next and H&M – you’re guaranteed to find exactly what you’re looking for and more at Palace Shopping. The 90s revival continues with the return of the utility trend: jumpsuits, camo print and western boots. Hop on the trend with an effortlessly cool boiler suit or a simple utility belted shirt - perfect as part of a day-to-night outfit. What is utility fashion without a little camouflage? Go all-out and layer up your not-so-subtle print or keep it casual mixed with a white tee and denim. Animal prints are still going strong, whilst florals are a given for spring. But don’t stop there! The crazier and more vibrant the print, the better. Combine with a key piece such as a midi skirt or maxi dress, blending comfort and style with ease. It’s all in store and ready for the new season at Palace Shopping Enfield.

BLOG

Katerina Mum to Rico and blogger to all! www.keepingupwithkaterina.com @keepingupwithkaterina

To all the lovely readers of Close Up, I’d like to start this journey with you as a new monthly columnist by introducing myself properly. For those who don’t know me or haven’t read my blog before – my name is Katerina and I started writing at first to document my pregnancy (My anxieties didn’t allow me to share my pregnancy on social media but the social butterfly in me was dying to spread her wings so talking to myself was the only option). It all started out very serious & formal; I was writing month-to-month about how I thought I should feel and how I was conditioned to think a pregnant woman should think. (This is so amazing, everything is so wonderful, this is the best I’ve ever felt – you see where I’m going with this). It was only after my beautiful bundle of joy (Rico) came along that I found my way & realised that actually it was ok to not always be full of the joys of spring and there were many mums around that actually felt the same but felt bad to admit it. I decided to put a funny spin on this amazing journey called motherhood (the best type of hood I’ve come to realise) and all in all lighten up a bit. Since my blog I’ve

I will be writing all things lifestyle, mum life and I will also be featuring business in spotlight every month! If you have any suggestions on what you would like me to write on please feel free to keep up with me on Instagram where I will be doing frequent polls and questionnaires about my column! BEAUTY

Bridal

BEAUTY TIPS By Marina Louca

It’s all so exciting when you envision yourself as a bride. I always hear a lot of brides telling me that their makeup is one of the most important things for them on their big day. It can get so confusing and overwhelming thinking about what makeup look to go for and with so many different images of makeup looks on the internet you will probably find that you have changed your mindset over and over until even the last week before the wedding.

Skin Choosing the best foundation can be tricky. The face base list of foundations is so vast. Do you choose a light weight, full coverage, matte or dewy? I always like to keep the skin looking fresh for someone’s big day so I’ll let you in on my favourite top 3 foundations I love using to create that flawless base.

Armani Luminous Silk

Tip Every bride wants flawless looking skin and so it’s always nice to treat yourself to a few facials near the lead up to the big day. Remember facials tend to bring out toxins that sit underneath the skin and so this may bring out those unwanted breakouts on the day you’re ready to say ‘I do’. It’s always a good idea to make sure you have facials a few months before and stop these facials at least a week before. Don’t forget that hydrating for better skin will result in fresh looking and dewy skin!

There’s always that big question I ask brides on the day of their makeup trial with me. Do you want natural, soft glam or full glam? I always recommend going for a soft glam look because it’s enough to photograph well but not too heavy where you may look in the mirror and feel like a totally different person. Saying that, there is no right or wrong way to have your makeup and as long as you stay true to you and what makes you feel comfortable then you’ll have nothing to worry about.

There’s a reason why so many celebrities and celebrity makeup artists love this foundation. This bottle of radiance leaves a velvety like finish to the skin. Since it’s lightweight, you can build the product up in areas that need a little more coverage and glow. You will certainly look airbrushed once you apply this foundation without looking too overdone.

Nars Sheer Glow This weightless foundation gives a light coverage but don’t worry, you can build this product up also for areas that need a little more coverage. It’s perfect for those ladies that mainly wear a BB cream but want just a little more coverage for their big day. As it contains a skin brightening formula you can rest a sure that your skin will look very luminous and hydrated.

Nars ‘Orgasm’ blusher Pink and peach tones on the cheeks always help create an extra radiant look on a bride. I’m sure you’ll already be glowing on the inside out but it’s always nice to have the extra glow too. I absolutely love using the cult classic Nars ‘Orgasm’ blusher to create a natural flushed-cheek look. This peachy pink blush leaves a subtle soft shimmer which looks so pretty and compliments any skin tone.

BEAUTY

Lips On the lips I absolutely love choosing a pink/beige/nude lipstick for a bride. My favourite go to lipsticks for brides are the Charlotte Tilbury and Tom Ford lipsticks. They have some gorgeous nude lipsticks with pink undertones and are both super hydrating on the lips. There’s nothing like having a luxurious lipstick on to create a pretty pout. My go to shades of lipsticks are:

Bitch Please Charlotte Tilbury

Penelope Pink Charlotte Tilbury

Honey Hepburn Charlotte Tilbury

Sable Smoke Tom Ford

Spanish Pink Tom Ford

Spiced Honey Tom Ford

It’s the finishing touches for a makeup artist that make all the difference. By applying a glow with a highlighter to the high points of the face as well as the collar bone and shoulders it’ll really show up in the pictures. I absolutely love highlighters and I have so many favourite products in this category of makeup. I couldn’t narrow it down too much so I have listed the products I typically use when glamming up a bride. You can use these on the face as well as the body. Trust me I’m far from shy when apply highlighter on my client. Anastasia Beverly Hills So Hollywood and Snowflake loose highlighters. Inglot Livin’ The Highlight Iconic London Liquid illuminator Drops in Original, Prep Set and Glow Spray in Orignial and Glow Nip + Fab Liquid Gold illuminator drops

Top Tip for smooth looking lips Prep your lips by buffing on a lip scrub to get rid of any dry and dead skin on the lips. Your lips will then look so hydrated and your lipstick will glide on like a dream. Bye bye cracked looking lips. I love using the Bubblegum lip scrub by Lush. Not only does it exfoliate your lips, it will leave a candy taste that you will want to lick off.

Lastly, you can’t forget your hydrating spray and setting sprays. If you want your makeup to really melt into the skin and create more of a dewy look then the Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin mist is my ride or die product. I get anxiety when I see the bottle slowly finishing. As this product is only sold in America, I tend to stock up on the Mac Fix + which is easier to get a hold of and still hydrates, soothes and refreshes skin. Urban Decay All Nighter and the Morphe Continuous Setting Mist are my go-to products. These help to prolong makeup wear and as it’s such a long day for a bride you want to make sure your makeup is locked in place. You’ve probably dreamt of this special day for such a long time. I know it can be stressful because you just want it all to be perfect. Remember, your makeup artist has ‘got you’. Use your time in the makeup chair to feel pampered and relaxed. It’s YOUR time! The day can go by so quickly so please make sure to enjoy every minute and smile!

FILM INTERVIEW

Natalie

PORTMAN This month’s Vox Lux sees Natalie Portman play Celeste, a pop diva in her thirties struggling to reconcile fame and her damaging past. The film, a big hit at festivals this year, saw her don startling make up and perform a spectacular concert.

Vox Lux is released 3rd May

chance to “beTheable to play a pop star was a dream!

The Oscar winner talks about becoming a pop star and her love for Sia!

What drew Portman to Celeste was exactly the elements that make her so difficult to other characters in the film. “I loved the opportunity to play this character” she says at a press conference for the film. “It was so beautifully written, and the character was so complicated. Then of course, the chance to be able to play a pop star was a dream!” Many have remarked the film has tonal similarities to Black Swan, the film that won Portman an Oscar for also playing a troubled artist. However, Portman doesn’t see the resemblance. “It was a completely different experience” she says. “It was different time in my life, and different styles of storytelling as well.” The film has political commentary as well, opening with a school shooting and with an undertone of violence throughout that have made it somewhat controversial. However, Portman believes that the film is art rather than a lecture. “It’s not a movie that has a message, I think” she says with conviction. “It’s a piece of art that is a portrait and a reflection of our society, the intersection of pop culture, violence and the spectacle that we equate between the two. When I read it, it was just such a reflection of the world we live in. It gave me the feeling of great art, not a message being hammered over my head.” On a lighter note, the film’s songs were written by Australian pop superstar Sia, something that was a big draw for the award winner. “I’ve been a fan of Sia’s for a long time – I’m not playing her of course, but to get to sing the music that she wrote was a great luxury” she beams. “I didn’t meet her before this film, but I have met her at various events and she’s always been very lovely and had a real passion for dance, as I do, so we’ve met at dance related events. She’s unbelievably talented and I’m just in awe of her.”

What is TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine)? Traditional Chinese medicine is a complete healthcare system created in China with a recorded history of around 4000 years and influenced by Taoism philosophy, Five-Element and Yin-Yang theories. A practitioner of TCM will treat CHINESE MEDICINE the patient as a whole considering all aspects physical, mental and emotional as well as the environment to get to the root cause of the imbalance. TCM views illness as arising from either internal emotional and/or physical imbalances, as well as from external environmental factors. In the thirteen years since her breakthrough in The Devil Wears Prada, British star Emily Blunt has become a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood. Impressing in all kinds of genres, she has played royalty in The Young Victoria, a bad ass military operative in Sicario, and put Tom Cruise through his paces in science fiction thriller Edge of Tomorrow. Most recently, however, she took on her most ambitious role to date – the legendary Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins returns, out on DVD and digital this month.

It was a real dream for Blunt, who was offered the role in appropriately grand fashion by director Rob Marshall (Chicago, Into The Woods). “I think (Marshall) even called my agent and said something big is coming down the pike for Emily, and I got a voicemail from Rob who is my dear friend and we have known each other a long time and the voice mail certainly had a sort of charged energy to it, I was like oh my god, what is it? What is this project?” she recalls at a press conference for the film. “When he called me, because he is so beautifully ceremonious and wants every moment of the process to feel special and transporting and memorable for you, that even the phone call had such a sense of ceremony to it. And he said, ‘you know, we’ve been digging through the Disney archives and, you know, we’ve been given by far their most prized possession’. And I was like what, what is that? And I couldn’t think what it was, and when he said Mary Poppins I thought like the air changed in the room.”

We’ve been “ digging through

the Disney archives and we’ve been given by far their most prized possession.

A sequel to the classic 60’s Disney original, Blunt takes over from Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins, the magical nanny who arrives at the doorstep of the now grown Banks children (Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer) just when they need her the most. It was a monumental task, taking over a part familiar to almost everyone who has been to the movies. However, it was a gamble that paid off, with the film being a huge success and earning Blunt a Golden Globe nomination. It capped off a stellar year for the actor after starring in breakout horror hit A Quiet Place, opposite husband John Krasinski who also directed the film.

As you might imagine, excitement turned to anxiety for the actor, who remains a big fan of the original. “She had such a big imprint on my life and on everyone’s lives, you know. People hold this character so close to their hearts” she says. “It was so extraordinary, such an extraordinary rather unparalleled moment for me because I was filled with an instantaneous yes, but also with some trepidation, you know, all happening simultaneously in that moment because she is so iconic.”

Part of that work was finding, for her, what made the character tick, and become so enduring for audiences all these years. “She leaped off the page for me, in how complicated she is” she says. “That duality of character - she is stern, she is incredibly rude and vain, and yet there is this humanity and she has to have such a child like wonder in her in order to infuse these children’s lives with it. There must be underneath there a generosity of spirit to want to fix and heal in the way she does.”

The task then became how you live up to the expectations set by such a film, as well as the memorable performance from Julie Andrews. “So, you know, how do I create my version of her? What will my version of her be because there’s no point (imitating Andrews)” she explains. “No one wants to see me do a sort of cheap impersonation of Julie Andrews because no one is Julie Andrews. And so she should be preserved and treasured in her own way of what she did. And so I knew this was going to be something that I wanted to take a big swing with and I knew I could do it with this man who is the most emboldening, meticulous, brilliant director in the world and I was in safe hands with him. However much I knew I had my work cut out for me.”

The film was a hit with families all over the world, and some have commented on the romantic tension between Mary Poppins and Jack The Lamplighter, played by Hamilton star Lin Manuel Miranda. “I mean I never felt that it was romantic between them necessarily” she says, before joking “but she doesn’t mind flirting with a labourer!”

Mary Poppins Returns is released on DVD and digital on April 15th.

INTERVIEW

Spice up your

LIFE

Celebrity TV chef Tonia Buxton talks sugar, spice and everything nice!

Close Up caught up with qualified nutritionist, chef and TV personality Tonia Buxton on launching her new book: The Secret of Spice, and what a day in the life of Tonia looks like. In her new fully-illustrated book, Tonia reveals the secret to a happier, healthier, spicier life through spice-based recipes for delicious meals, beauty products and ‘powerful potions’ to help live longer and feel better, naturally. Hi Tonia, congratulations on launching ‘The Secret of Spice’! Can you tell us what to expect from this book? You can expect lots of information on how spices can transform your life & LOTS of great, tasty, and easy recipes. It’s part a-z of all my favourite spices, where they come from, what their benefits are and part straight recipe book that is filled with spices. What inspired you to focus on spices? I have always used food as my medicine, and I started looking at how spices can help too, they are so nutritionally dense & have so many micronutrients, that I felt I had to share. Spices and herbs can do the most wonderful things to aid our help, like drugs and pills normally would, without any side effects at all. Who would you say is your biggest inspiration in the culinary world? Gosh that’s a hard one, well my first inspirations came from family, my Grandmother, Mother, Aunts and now my daughters are amazing cooks and I get inspired by them too. Which recipe from the book is the most popular in your household? There are a few, everyone likes the throw together tarts as they are so easy to make and look so good, venison stew is a fav, especially when it’s cold out and my fig and almond cake is a firm fav.

wracked with insecurity. What I try to do, especially since I hit 50, is to go out of my comfort zone, recently I was invited to speak by the Chambers of Commerce, in that room there were amazing women, CEO of industry and glass ceiling breakers, I was so nervous as I thought; ‘these women are all brighter than me’, and yet I gave the talk and it turned out that I did have some knowledge to impart and I am so glad I did it. I try to be brave and do things that I would naturally not do, last week I went to a day art class, I was terrible but I did learn something and felt good about going. I also did a photo session this year that I thought I would NEVER do, surrounded by 40 kilos of red chillies. I was so nervous, but in the end I found it so empowering and such fun! It helped to have a great female photographer and we laughed so much.

A day in the life of Tonia Buxton Well, the first thing to know is that no two days are the same for me. Being freelance, I juggle so many different things in my life, from recipe inventing and testing for a new book, to working as Consultant Chef at The Real Greek Restaurants, where I work on recipes, press and PR, to getting up very early (4.30am) to go and speak at a live debate on Good Morning Britain. 7.15am

Wake up, shout to the boys to get up.

7.45am

Give the boys their breakfast.

8am 8-9am 9.15am 10.30am 12pm

Boys go to school, I go to the gym. Train, either a pump class, HIIT training, yoga or aerobics. Home, shower. Finish article I have written for online women’s magazine ‘The Scene’. Train to the West End.

The recipes may not all be from your traditional Greek roots, but do you feel this book is personal to you in other ways?

1pm

Lunch meeting with my colleagues at The Real Greek.

All my books are personal to me, when you recipe, invent and work so hard on something it becomes part of you. Yes, I am of Greek Cypriot origin, and a lot of my influences come from there, but I am British born and love to travel, so I take influences from wherever I go.

3pm

Hair blow dry.

4pm

5pm

In the cab to Buckingham Palace.

You recently turned 50! And you look absolutely fabulous. What advice can you give to women feeling less confident? Do what it takes to get confident, make some tweaks so you feel happy, confidence is a very personal thing. People look at me and think I am confident, but like everyone I have moments

The Secret of

SPICE

This month, Close Up have teamed up with celebrity TV personality Tonia Buxton to reveal some of her exclusive recipes from her latest publication, ‘The Secret of Spice’. Make sure you enter the competition for a chance to win a copy! Here are some of our favourite dishes…

Spicy Chocolate Pots These little chocolate mousses pack a powerful punch! Serves 4 Ingredients 120g dark chocolate (at least 80% cocoa solids), roughly chopped 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp chilli flakes A pinch of salt 3 tbsp strong spirit, such as Aqualibra tequila, Cointreau or Mastica liqueur 4 medium eggs, separated 40g soft brown sugar Zest of 1 orange Method Put the chocolate into a heatproof glass bowl over a pan of simmering water, making sure the bowl does not touch the bottom of the pan, and melt gently. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the cinnamon, chilli flakes and alcohol. Beat the egg whites until they form peaks, then add the sugar and beat again until it turns glossy. Stir the egg yolks into the cooled chocolate and then slowly fold in the egg whites, little by little. Do not overmix. Spoon into small glasses, decorate with orange zest, and allow to set in the fridge for 2–3 hours.

FOOD

Chickpea Filled Filo Triangles This is one of the dishes that’s on my vegan menu for The Real Greek. It has proved to be a very popular as it has the perfect balance of aroma and spice. If you fancy trying them but don’t want to cook them yourself, you could always pop in to The Real Greek and give them a go! Makes 12 - 16 Ingredients 1 pack fi lo pastry Olive oil, for brushing For the filling 2 x 400g tinned chickpeas, drained 1 onion, cut into quarters 1 tsp ground cumin 1/2 tsp ground turmeric 40g sundried tomatoes 1 small red chilli, very finely chopped 3 garlic cloves, crushed Zest and juice of 1 lemon 2 tbsp olive oil 30g flat leaf parsley, finely chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper Black and white sesame seeds for sprinkling (optional) Method Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 4 and line a baking tray with baking paper. Place all the filling ingredients except from the sesame seeds into a food processor and blitz into a coarse paste. Remove the fi lo pastry from the wrapper and unroll onto a clean work surface. Cut through the centre vertically so you have two even sections. Place one on top of the other. Use two sheets per triangle.

Place 1 heaped tsp (do not overfill) of filling at the bottom of each strip and then start folding the pastry around the filling. Seal the triangle with a dab of olive oil. Lightly brush with olive oil (you don’t want the pastry to be oily) and sprinkle with a little salt.

Place the pastries on the lined baking tray, under damp kitchen paper, and continue until you have used up all the filling or pastry sheets. Sprinkle them with dark and light sesame seeds (if using) Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden.

Competition Close Up are offering 3 lucky readers the chance to win a copy of Tonia Buxton’s latest publication, ‘The Secret of Spice’. To enter, simply email sayhello@closeupuk.com headed ‘SECRETOFSPICE’. Closing date 30th April 2019. Good luck!

INTERVIEW

Josh

DENZEL Sports presenter, content creator and Love Island heartthrob Josh Denzel talks to Close Up about love, sports and fashion.

Hi Josh! How has life been since leaving the villa? It’s been great… a bit of a whirlwind! I’ve been so busy working with brands such as boohooMAN, travelling to America to cover sporting events, and working with some of the huge names in broadcasting & sport, like BT & Sky. Love may not have worked out for me after Love Island, but everything’s super positive at the moment. Is there anyone that you kept closely in touch with? Us boys are in close contact and we speak every day – me, Jack & Wes of course, the trio. We’ve been close since the first day we walked into the villa. Adam, Ellie, and Jack Fincham too – we all catch up on a regular basis. You started your career presenting sports coverage for LADbible and SPORTbible, which has now lead to you working across the Cricket World Cup! Is presenting something you are still heavily involved with? Absolutely! It was my dream job growing up as a kid, and still is! I always wanted to be hosting Match of the Day, or be like Reggie Yates, interviewing people and creating content. It’s amazing meeting basketball icons and your footballing idols through your job, and I’ve had the pleasure of working with my favourite athletes and entertainers. It’s something I’m still heavily involved with and want to carry on. It’s a craft, something I’ve learnt on the job for 2 or 3 years and I don’t want to lose that skill – it’s my one true passion.

With work taking over, do you think love is still on the cards for you? Love is always on the cards, but you have to be in the right stage of your life and the right frame of mind. I’m so busy at the moment, but you never know what’s around the corner. Travelling has quickly become part of your everyday routine! You are soon to be covering the Monaco Grand Prix, being a sports fan is this something you always dreamed of? The fact I get to travel with work, and my work is my dream job – I’ve got to pinch myself every day! The Monaco Grand Prix is one of the biggest sporting events of the year, and I’ve been lucky enough to go a few times. Every time I see the track and huge amount of fans & love for the sport, I can’t help but think I’m absolutely blessed to be there. To go there and cover it on a work basis, and create content around the race, it’s really special. I still fully appreciate all of the opportunities I get given. Speaking of travelling, you recently flew out to LA with boohooMAN, what influence have you had on their upcoming collection? I was shooting a lot of the behind the scenes for the shoot and working with their new brand ambassador. I’m not sure if any other brand could’ve pulled all of this off. There was everything from wild animals to a Terracotta army… it blew me away. I can’t wait to go back to LA for the launch and celebrate everyone’s hard work on such an unbelievable project!

is my dream job – I’ve “gotMytowork pinch myself every day! I’m

absolutely blessed to be there.

How does it feel to be filming with rapper and actor Ashley Walters? Can you tell us a bit more about what you are filming?

Being super stylish yourself, are you planning on having any of your own fashion collections?

It’s going to be super interesting, but I can’t say too much because I’ll give it away! He’s someone who has changed his role in the entertainment industry multiple times – from music to acting, hard hitting dramas to comedies. He’s someone I really look up to, and will be an interesting character to chat to and get under the skin of.

That would be amazing! I’ve collaborated with a number of brands, but to have my own, with full creative control and putting my vision out there on people, that would be wicked.

40 // Close Up Magazine

Will we be seeing you on our screens any time soon? Haha! Keep an eye out on sports channels… No more reality TV at the moment, but watch this space.

Josh Denzel will be covering the Cricket World Cup for LADbible this summer. For more, follow Josh on Instagram @JOSHDENZEL

FILM INTERVIEW

Jude

LAW The British star on improvisation and relating to his characters.

It’s been an impressive few months for veteran movie star Jude Law. Having ended 2018 as Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts sequel, he plays mentor to none other than Captain Marvel in March’s hit comic book blockbuster. He keeps that momentum going with cool indie drama Vox Lux, playing the somewhat sleazy manager of pop star Celeste (Natalie Portman). Having broken through in the mid 90’s, Law is a passionate actor who chooses his projects carefully, and was drawn to this project instantly. “You read something that provokes something in you and that you’re curious about and that you feel is relevant and alive that you think plugs in to what we’re all going through” he says at a Q&A for the film. The film had a very unique shoot, led by director Brady Corbet. It’s something the two time Oscar nominee relished. “Every day, there was a wonderful sense of focus” he says. “Some of the scenes you’ll see are one

fun to see it all “ It’s come together. As

an actor, it’s exciting when you just get to step in and do your little bit.

shot, and it takes an awful lot of balls to turn up on the day and shoot like we did. We’d rehearse on the day for a couple of hours until we got it right, then you have maybe a couple of hours to film it and hope that you’re going to get it in the can. It was courageous and… specific, I think is the word. Which is challenging and rewarding.” Even now the film is finished, he remains excited to see where his work fits in with the larger vision. “It’s fun to see it all come together. As an actor, it’s exciting when you just get to step in and do your little bit” he explains. “That’s all you’ve got in front of you, but you’re aware that you’re part of a much bigger picture. So it’s fun seeing it and sharing it, because you’re aware you’re part of a bigger picture but at the time you’re just focused on your little part.” Finally, given his enthusiasm for playing such a dishonest character, did he relate to his role in any way? “No, thank God, no! Well, sometimes…” he jokes. “No, absolutely not. That’s the joy of it, stepping into this different world. There was a little moment where I thought ‘wow, I wish I lived like this’, but then in hindsight I’m so glad I don’t.”

Orley Farm School, Harrow Breadth, Balance & Excellence…

Tim Calvey took over the Headship of Orley Farm School in 2013 having previously been, amongst other teaching positions, Head of Boarding in two previous schools. He believes that at the heart of the Orley Farm experience is the passion in teachers to light fires in the minds of young people that burn for a lifetime!

“Whilst we are academically selective, we are also looking for that edge, a spark, the unique in every pupil to foster and celebrate, because the last time I looked, academic credentials guarantee very little. It’s a brave new world out there and emotional intelligence is gold dust!” Orley Farm School is home to 500 girls and boys aged 4 to 13 who are receiving an extraordinary educational experience that develops the whole child preparing them for future success in an ever-changing world. Fulfilment and happiness start with a deep love of learning and over their time with us, through our unique ‘Thinking Skills Programme’, children will develop their resilience, curiosity, empathy, risk-taking, good judgement, creativity, initiative, focus, flexibility of mind and ambition. We are very proud that we find the right senior school for each individual and over the past five years 324 pupils have been offered 215 Scholarships to 59 different schools.

FILM REVIEW No less than three superhero movies are heading to our screens in April, with all three being kept under wraps at the time of going to press. However, we have previews of those blockbusters along with the very best April has to offer. Enjoy!

The Sisters Brothers 5th April

Two of the best character actors around join up to tell the tale of The Sisters Brothers (Joaquin Phoenix and John C Reilly), assassins who become caught up in the California gold rush. Co-starring Riz Ahmed and Jake Gyllenhaal, superb acting lifts what can often feel like a run of the mill western drama that doesn’t quite live up to the previous films of French director Jacques Audiard (A Prophet, Rust and Bone). That being said, it will be a must see for fans of cowboys and crazy schemes.

HHHHH

Mid90s 12th April

Jonah Hill makes his directorial debut, telling a semiautobiographical story about a young boy in the 1990’s who falls in with a skateboard gang made of up older, wilder children. Told with a lot of emotion and a wonderful aesthetic, Hill clearly draws from some very personal places as he draws sensational performances from his young cast, as well as older actors such as Lucas Hedges and Katherine Waterston. This year’s cool indie hit of the summer.

HHHHH

Wild Rose 12th April

Jessie Buckley, who first rose to fame in the reality show I’d Do Anything, stars in this funny musical journey of a young woman who dreams of stardom as a Country Singer, but whose ambitions are hampered by her past. Co-starring Sophie Okonedo and Julie Walters, the film is a touching, uplifting story of what it takes to achieve a dream. Buckley is mesmerising in the lead role, with excellent support from the always wonderful Walters. An uplifting treat that will leave you floating from the cinema.

HHHHH

Eighth Grade 26th April

This month features another directorial debut, this time from comedian Bo Burnham about the trials of an eighth grade student (Elsie Fisher) during her last years of high school. Featuring all the agony, ecstacy and awkwardness of high school, Fisher shines in a complicated and captivating performance, directed sensitively by Burnham, who looks to have a promising future as a film maker.

Also Out This Month... Shazam! 5th April

Ever wanted to be a superhero as a kid (or even now)? Well prepare to vicariously live that dream in this DC Comics adaptation about a young boy who is able to turn into a superhero (Zachary Levi) whenever he says the word ‘Shazam!’ The film pitches itself as a cross between Superman and 80’s classic Big, and is tipped to be a big hit with audiences. The DC Universe’s troubled run of movies took a turn for the better last winter with the success of Aquaman, and judging by the trailers this looks to repeat that film’s winning combination of action and fun!

Hellboy 11th April

It’s eleven years since we last saw the red anti-hero on the big screen, then played by Ron Pearlman. Well, the character is back in the shape of David Harbour (Stranger Things) and sees him once again caught between the supernatural and human worlds. The film also stars Ian McShane as Hellboy’s father, and Mila Jovovich as a British sorceress! This reboot sees him travel to London and even features a small role for Laila Morse, known to millions as Mo from Eastenders. If that isn’t worth the price of admission we don’t know what is!

Red Joan 19th April

Looking for a break from comic book movies? This spy drama promises to offer for relief from the Marvel and DC onslaught. Judi Dench stars as a retired woman who is exposed as one of the KGB’s longest-serving spies. The story is based on the real life operative British Civil Servant Melita Norwood. Sophie Cookson (Kingsmen) also stars in flashback sequences as the younger version of Dench’s character, and early film festival reviews have tipped this to be an early contender for next year’s awards season. Check it out now before the buzz starts to build!

Avengers: Endgame 26th April

Arguably the biggest film of 2019, the excitement is building for the second part of the Avengers’ battle to save the planet. After Thanos killed half of Earth’s population in Infinity War, the remaining heroes (led by Chris Evans’ Captain America) must find a way to reverse what has been done. The Avengers films have dominated this decade, with at least one instalment being released every year since 2010. With all that build up, expect the battle to end all battles!

TRAVEL

Chasing

CHERRY BLOSSOM A springtime visit to Tokyo and Kyoto might reward you with swathes of the pink stuff. But if it doesn’t, a magnificent world of temples, riverside dining and people-watching awaits.

50 // Close Up Magazine

Cherry blossoms are the fluffiest and frilliest of flowers. Nature’s equivalent of dressing for a wedding. Delicate solo, dramatic en masse, they are utterly uplifting when they first appear, yet engender an air of wistfulness when they shiver in the breeze and flutter down like confetti. As they fade and cascade, they are spring’s gentle reminder that nothing sublime lasts for long. And there you have it – why the Japanese adore sakura, as they call them. The pink blooms are both a symbol of new beginnings and an intimation of immortality. In short, they are a floral representation of the country’s deepest-held cultural and philosophical beliefs.

Sakura trees come in many varieties, with branches either acing into the sky or weeping like willows. Some are white and ethereal, some flirt their petals in playful candyfloss pink, while others shake cerise cheerleader pompoms. At sakura time, Japan embraces the emblem anywhere and everywhere. As a Japanophile, I have always longed to join the ritual of hanami or flower viewing – when all generations, from grandparents and office workers to teenagers and toddlers, come out to picnic, play games and party under the cherry trees.

butterfly migration, the Japanese know that everybody’s countin on the accuracy of their sakura forecasting. Since the 1950s meteorologists have been stationed up and down the country, monitoring how the buds are behaving and when to wave the pink flag. Forecasts begin around January and are divided into two key dates – when the blossoms are likely to reach “first blooming” and then “full blooming”. As the season progresses, they are posted on many websites, such as japanguide.com and jnto.go.jp.

With such fevered anticipation, it’s crucial for the Japanese – and anyone planning a trip to see the cherry blossoms – to know when they are due to flower. Enter Japanese technology. Forget Newfoundland’s storm watch or predictions for Monarch

Flowering differs greatly depending not only on where you are in the archipelago – the farther south, the earlier – but also on the weather. The blossoms generally arrive in Tokyo and Kyoto in late March or early April, but warmth can coax them out sooner, while cold conditions can keep them snuggled in bud until much later. Throw in a few heavy rain bursts, and even if they emerge when expected, they can easily lose their grip, only to lie in pink puddles on the floor. This can be a bit of an inconvenience for the home nation planning picnics. But if you’re calculating when to splurge on flights and accommodation, the sakura stakes are much higher. And given hotel rooms are booked up way in advance, it’s a brave person who hangs on to the last minute. Head for some of the best hanami locations. The first is Shiba Park, with the Tokyo Tower as backdrop. Moving on to Meguro River, a cool little spot with stylish cafes and shops lining the water. Pink lanterns hang along the banks, and the blossoms are out. As well as thousands of people, mooching and milling and sipping pink champagne. Next, visit Shinjuku Gyoen, a beautiful park with meandering paths and picture-postcard ponds. Here are many types of cherry trees in full bloom and it’s wonderful being there drinking matcha sea, served by sweet elderly ladies in kimonos. In the evening, visit Rikugien, a landscape garden that boasts clouds of blossom illuminated at night. Next on the itinerary is Kyoto. Specifically Kyoto Gyoen, the national garden surrounding the Imperial Palace, and the Heian Jingu gardens, which are about as picturesquely Japanese as you can get. In the evening, hit sakura success at the Kodai-ji Temple, and catch a light show starring a stunning weeping sakura. But as gorgeous as this is, it’s the temple itself, at the foot of the Higashiyama Mountains, that captures your imagination. Established in 1606 by a noblewoman in memory of her late husband, this incredible site, with its shrines and garden, is not to be missed. Never, whatever the season, miss an opportunity to visit Japam. Come rain, come shine, come sakura.

Landlord’s Redevelopment Plans Must Not Be Conditional – Corporate and Commercial property solicitor Janis Wilderspin discusses a recent Court of Appeal verdict A recent case in which a landlord sought repossession of a property from its tenant on the ground that it intended to redevelop the property has gained a great deal of attention, but may not be as important as it first seems. The facts of the case were that the landlord opposed the tenant’s application for a new commercial lease on the ground that it intended to carry out works to redevelop the property. What was unusual in the case in point was that the landlord’s intention was to carry out the works in order to obtain occupation of the property...the works in and of themselves were commercially not very attractive. The tenant leased the ground floor and basement of the building, the rest of which was occupied and managed by the landlord as a hotel. The works specified to justify the opposition to granting a new tenancy were such that planning permission would not have to be obtained. The planned changes to the premises were minor: one of them was the demolition and rebuilding of an internal wall nearly identical to that being demolished. The landlord accepted that if the tenant left voluntarily, none of the works specified would be carried out. The County Court accepted that although the whole purpose of the scheme was to terminate the tenant’s lease, the fact that the landlord intended to carry out the work was sufficient reason for the application to succeed. That decision was overturned by the Supreme Court (the appeal having leap-frogged the Court of Appeal). The Court concluded that the landlord’s intention to carry out the redevelopment must exist independently of the tenant’s wish to have a new tenancy. If the works would not be

carried out if the tenant left voluntarily, the landlord’s intention was clearly conditional and could not provide grounds for a successful opposition to the tenancy. The practical outcome is that where a landlord wishes to obtain possession of a property at the end of a relevant lease on the grounds that the property is to be redeveloped, there will need to be a properly considered and justifiable development scheme.
