NAOMI CAMPBELL

The iconic supermodel, the queen of runway and the ultimate force of fashion.

One of the five original supermodels, Naomi Campbell, superwoman, mentor, businesswomen and mother. The UK’s greatest supermodel has been a fearless champion of diversity in fashion for decades. Now she’s relishing a moment of change.

“BUT WE worked hard. AND NO MATTER HOW MANY OUTFIT CHANGES, HOW MANY SHOWS, we never said we were tired.”

One of the world’s most renowned supermodels after beginning her modelling career at age 15, Naomi Campbell was the first black woman to appear on the covers of French and British Vogue and the first black model to appear on the cover of Time. While the exquisitely exotic leggy supermodel began her career on the catwalk, by the end of the 1980s, Campbell quickly segued to high-profile advertising and had become well known as one of a select group of models, called supermodels, who earned multimilliondollar incomes and were famous beyond the fashion world. She has appeared on the cover of more than 500 magazines and modelled on the runway and in advertising campaigns for many of the world’s top fashion designers and brands, including Versace, Ralph Lauren, Vivienne Westwood, Chanel, and Yves Saint Laurent. Despite her success, she was often the only black model featured alongside other models. You probably already know it by now, but Campbell, 15, a schoolgirl hailing from the fairly unremarkable streets of London’s Streatham neighbourhood, was spotted by a model scout while out windowshopping in London’s West End. It’s a story a world away from how most successful models these days seem to be discovered, either scouted via Instagram or ushered to the front of the queue by virtue of their famous parents. Campbell’s backstory makes it seem like a chance encounter was responsible for changing the trajectory of her life, as though hers is some sort of “right place, right time” Cinderella story. However, with a face like hers—those formidable cheekbones sweeping upward as though in tribute to the celestial beings that must have played a role in their creation and those plump, perfectly proportioned lips—Naomi Campbell was always going to be famous.

THEIR dream is to show, THEN LET THEM SHOW.”

Between Paris, Milan and London in the last 2 seasons, Naomi walked in shows for Versace, Alexander McQueen, Balmain and Lanvin. “I still enjoy it but it’s nerve-racking! Because I’m in my fifties walking with girls who are 18!” She’s being generous. No one – but no one – commands a runway like Naomi, then or now. “It was more fun back then because you’re with your girls,” she explains, referring to Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington. “It’s great to be with these young’uns at my age, but I have to say, at one of the shows I was like, ‘Come on, girls! Pick up your feet! Why are you walking so slow?’ I definitely feel like my time was more joyful. We smiled. We got to show off our personalities.”

Naomi, Linda, Cindy, Christy... the power of those four glamorous, go-getting, genetically gifted women transcended fashion. Their status – their celebrity – was so spectacular that their names became as big as, if not bigger than, the blockbuster brands they were booked for. “It was an incredible time,” she remembers, fondly, “but we worked hard. And no matter how many outfit changes, how many shows, we never said we were tired. We all loved it and we kept each other’s energy up. We did eight shows a day and then we would go and celebrate with the designers in the evening. I wonder sometimes if models now could have kept up with us.”

Following her rise to fame as a model, Campbell pursued acting and music careers, enjoying her greatest success with the latter in Japan. Her singing career peaked with the 1994 hit “Love and Tears.” Additionally, Campbell has appeared in countless TV shows, music videos and films, including ‘The Cosby Show,’ ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,’ Madonna’s ‘Erotica,’ Bob Marley’s ‘Is This Love’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘In The Closet’.

COVER INTERVIEW

“IF

Earlier this summer Naomi Campbell launched her first collaboration with online fashion brand PrettyLittleThing. Campbell met with [PLT CEO] Umar Kamani and said “I’m interested, but this is what I’m doing, and I would like this to be incorporated. Everyone’s seen that there are no borders—and especially in fashion, there shouldn’t be. We need to embrace all creatives. There has been a block of sorts in the past, and that block needs to be banished.” Inclined to enact change versus pontificate about it, Campbell explained, “I’m looking at myself as a changemaker. As a changemaker, I thought this was something that was a good thing to do. I know that it’s fast fashion, and that people have their criticism. I’m not denying them. But as a changemaker, I felt this was a great way to effect change in the industry in getting my emerging designers recognised and seeing them on a global platform.”

Above all, Campbell would like to see the fashion industry change “by opening up all borders — fashion is not supposed to discriminate — and allowing anyone and everyone who wants to come and show in whatever country. If their dream is to show, then let them show,” she said. “Giving them the support that they need is the most important thing” Recalling how “so many” helped her, including “so many who are no longer here, in naming some of them — Azzedine Alaïa, Gianni Versace, Mr. Saint Laurent, there are too many, oh my goodness. There was Karl Lagerfeld. I was in such a blessed place and time.” With that in mind, she said, “I’ve always believed that you have to share and pass it on. That’s who I am as a person. But I don’t like my kindness to be mistaken for weakness. I do it as initiatives and I do it around the world… I love working with new, young photographers, young designers and a new generation of models.” “I have nothing to prove,” she continues. “It’s what I like doing. My work is hard, but it’s joyful at the same time. I’m still enjoying what I do, and that’s also important—to enjoy what you do.”

Campbell is also responsible for wide-ranging fundraising and charity work in South Africa and across the globe. She began charity work with Nelson Mandela in 1993, and in 1997 he named her ‘Honorary Granddaughter’ for her endless activism. A significant part of Campbell’s time is now spent engaging in a mixture of activism, philanthropy, and cultural ambassadorship, often via Fashion for Relief, the non-profit she founded in 2005 to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina, which has since gone on to raise more than $15 million for charitable causes worldwide. In October, she launched Emerge, an initiative focused on discovering and promoting the next generation of creative talent from emerging communities around the world, with a star-studded gala and fashion show in Qatar. In layman’s terms, that means apprenticeships, mentoring, and skill development within the creative industries— fashion, yes, but also art, entertainment, and tech.

Campbell’s desire to uplift the next generation of fashion creatives is also evident in the number of younger models she’s taken under her wing. Among that cohort is Adut Akech, the doll-faced 23-yearold South Sudan–born model who is currently one of the most sought-after faces in the industry, thanks in no small part to Campbell’s support.

Naomi Campbell continues to be a formidable force in the world of fashion and has used her success to establish herself as an entrepreneur whilst always helping others in need through her charity work.

SHOULDER Show

It wasn’t until fashion icon Brigitte Bardot revived the fashion trend, and put her own twist on the style in the 1960s, that off-the-shoulder style was coined as the “Bardot”. Today, the look has made a huge comeback and has become one of this season’s most unexpected flattering styles.

Changing the concept of Luxury: The woman (and the vision) behind Lachesis London

Meet Cássila Dolman, the founder of Lachesis London, a concept online store of luxury products curated from around the world.

Her journey reads like a novel—a successful career as a Commercial lawyer, an upbringing in vibrant Brazil, and a family home in the United Kingdom. Yet, beneath this facade of conventionality, an entrepreneurial fire was awaiting to show. As she navigated her thriving legal career, Cássila's longing for a time balanced family life urged her towards a new path—one where she could set her own rules. This path led her to Lachesis London, a platform built to challenge the very essence of luxury. For Cássila, luxury isn't static; it's dynamic, evolving to encompass values that transcend mainstream brands and price tags. It's about cherishing the timeless artistry of craftsmanship, superior quality materials and the commitment to social and environmental responsibility.

In the modern world, where time is our most precious commodity, Cássila recognises that true luxury lies in the narratives woven into each product, in the eco-conscious choices that shape our planet's future. Lachesis London is a testament to her unwavering belief that fashion should be a force for good in the world.

Lachesis London invites us to embark on a journey that goes beyond style and aesthetics—it's a journey towards a more conscious and compassionate world, where luxury can be a symbol of innovation and integrity. As we navigate its journey, we can't help but be enchanted by Cássila Dolman, a visionary leader, who is ushering in a new era of luxury—one that is as inclusive as it is inspiring.

Fall 2023’s number one fashion trend, let’s be honest, is black and white ever out of fashion? The monochrome palette is a constant in the seasonal fashion cycle and should be a staple of every woman’s wardrobe. Black and white is seasonless, timeless and ageless.

AN INTERVIEW WITH: BARTH ROUGIER

Meet Barth Rougier, a 26-year-old trailblazer who is reshaping success across multiple industries. He is the creative mind behind DNA, a cutting-edge 360 Marketing & Talent Management agency, where he represents over 75 influential talents worldwide. Collaborating closely with luxury brands, Barth orchestrates captivating campaigns that propel their reach to new heights. Today, he is the proud owner and operator of B London, one of Chelsea’s trendiest nightclubs, and is on the brink of unveiling lxchel, a highly anticipated luxury Mexican restaurant in West London.

What inspired you to start your journey in talent management and create DNA?

I have a genuine passion for working across various industries simultaneously, including but not limited to music, fashion, hospitality, and marketing, all of which are interconnected within the creative sphere. This led me to embark on a journey to establish my own venture, DNA.

What initially ignited my enthusiasm for talent management was the desire to assist young creatives, whether in music or the digital realm, in realising their aspirations and bringing their visions to fruition. DNA’s mission is to bridge the gap between various creative domains, fostering innovation and growth while enabling both emerging and established talents to thrive in an ever-evolving landscape.

Can you tell us about some of the notable campaigns you’ve worked on with global brands?

Recently, we had the privilege of undertaking an exhilarating project on behalf of our esteemed client, Bang & Olufsen, in June. With just a few weeks’ notice, we were entrusted with the task of orchestrating a global digital campaign launch in London from A-Z. The compressed timeline presented a big risk, one that involved placing DNA’s reputation on the line.

Nevertheless, we approached the challenge with confidence in our abilities to deliver exceptional results within the constraints of this tight schedule. This was a big and proud moment for the entire DNA team.

What challenges did you face when transitioning from hosting parties at the beginning of your journey, to owning a nightclub?

Around 6 to 7 years ago, I was working alongside a group of nightclub owners, assisting them in managing their own nightclubs at the time. Fast forward five years:

those club owners transitioned from being my employers to becoming my business partners. My ascent within this partnership was a testament to both my dedication and the trust I diligently cultivated over the years.

What motivated you to expand your business and venture into the restaurant industry?

My passion lies in both witnessing and curating moments of happiness for people. Over the past eight years, my professional journey has been predominantly rooted in the nightclub industry, but my affection for cuisine and entertainment has fuelled my desire to venture into the restaurant industry. All of my hospitality endeavours have been strategically centred in West London, where I grew up. My vision for the future is to continue nurturing and expanding the spectrum of experiences available in this vibrant corner of London. Whether that be establishing a hotel, additional clubs or restaurants.

How do you balance your responsibilities as a CEO while staying connected to the creative side of your work?

The more I am indulged in this CEO position, the less creative time I have ahead of me and I am dedicated to structuring my daily routine in a way that allows me to carve out precious moments for unfettered creativity. At my very core, I identify as a creative individual, and it’s imperative for me to remain deeply connected to this aspect of my personality. I wholeheartedly encourage and foster a culture of boundless creativity within my team, given the nature of my businesses.

What’s your go-to inspiring quote for aspiring entrepreneurs or talents?

Don’t ever feel discouraged if one door doesn’t open, the next one might be the right one.

31 Le Rouge

THE SPIRIT OF CHANEL CREATION

31 LE ROUGE is a work of art, infused with CHANEL heritage and colour expertise. Pigment by pigment, the House Makeup Creation Studio has crafted twelve shades with an intensely luminous satin finish.

The first CHANEL lipstick to feature glass packaging, 31 LE ROUGE is a prism of light. Its case has been faceted to resemble the mirrors that line the famous rue Cambon staircase in Paris: a tribute to the ultimate birthplace of CHANEL creation, but also a reflection of the House’s avant-garde spirit. Unique in every aspect, this recyclable material features an interchangeable mechanism and comes with a protective cap, meaning they can be switched out and resealed without having to finish the entire bullet. With 31 LE ROUGE, CHANEL transforms lipstick into a work of craftsmanship, a fusion of technology and glassmaking expertise traditionally used in high perfumery.

These 12 shades are drawn from the House’s unique heritage, with the meticulous accuracy of a haute couture garment. Some offer a glimpse into a specific moment in Gabrielle Chanel’s life or one of her passions. Others act as a code, unlocking insight into one of her creations or conjuring one of her most prized possessions. Among them is Rouge 2.55, a deep and sophisticated garnet inspired by the lining of an iconic handbag. Rouge Fetiche, a crisp crimson, is the colour of the flannel ribbons that Mademoiselle wore around her ankles like amulets leading up to the release of a new collection. Rouge Beige is a natural beige, a nod to a visionary idea; at a time when women were expected to dress only in dark colours at night, she elevated the allure of the evening gown by creating it out of beige satin. There is Rouge Roman, an elegant rosewood that calls to mind the binding of her treasured tomes, which she kept on display in her apartment, near to her at all times. Rouge Croisière, a dusty orange, is a tribute to the Cruise collection wardrobes that usher in a new season before it has truly arrived. There is also Rouge Privé, a shade infused with the same mystery that surrounds the door at the top of the mirror-lined staircase at 31 rue Cambon and the famous words that appear upon it: “Mademoiselle Privé”. It is a wardrobe with haute couture-level elegance, from which to pick and choose as you

please, selecting shades to match your mood, your look du jour, and of course, all the various facets of your personality.

The formula of 31 LE ROUGE features the properties of a skincare product, without sacrificing performance, comfort, or looks. It leverages the softness of gardenia infused oil, a botanical gem cultivated by CHANEL, to deliver an instant smoothing effect that lasts longer with each application. Designed for ultimate comfort and optimal hydration, each fine coat of 31 LE ROUGE envelops lips thanks to a blend of plantderived waxes and oils. The addition of CHANEL-developed camellia esters further enhances the formula, allowing it to instantly soften lips.

Because too much is never enough, 31 LE ROUGE also redefines the lips. Maracuja oil, an active ingredient known to stimulate the synthesis of three major components of the skin’s structure hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin helps give lips a more defined appearance. Immediately upon application, lips look defined for up to 8 hours*. After four weeks, they have a more sculpted shape (+14%**). Lips are also left firmer, smoother, plumper, and more beautiful (+29%**). Your smile is enhanced with each passing day.

Ultra-sensuous and incredibly soft, 31 LE ROUGE has yet another secret to reveal: its gardenia-inspired scent. Specially developed by CHANEL In-House Perfumer-Creator Olivier Polge, alongside the CHANEL Fragrance Laboratory, the delicate aroma is a private pleasure for the wearer to enjoy. For the first time, the name of CHANEL is embossed around the lipstick bullet. These two key details make application a true tête-à-tête with your lips-the essence of a CHANEL kiss.

Last week this column started off as a modern-day Romeo and Juliet story. Two star crossed lovers who caught eyes at a Chris Brown concert on Valentines Day who were ripped apart by religion, consequence and two very different life journeys. It sounds so captivating right? Well, that Romeo and Juliet story has now turned into a self-help piece on the violation of boundaries!

We’ve gone from Shakespeare to therapy in the space of 48 hrs. Let’s dig into it. I am not able to have a Just for Fun relationship, it’s never worked for me. I get too involved, I fall in love, I cry, the end. In this instance, I did very much feel a connection to this particular man. We spoke so freely, we enjoyed each other’s company, we had the same values and morals and, by other men’s standards, he was a genuinely nice man… not to mention devilishly handsome.

After our second date, I decided to dance with devil, excuse the pun, and we did indeed, bump uglies. It was a great experience and I don’t regret it at all, but it was the realisation after that gave me the post sex horrors, because for many reasons, this relationship could not continue.

As much as I knew I did not want to pursue a romance, I often cut my nose to spite my face. I did enjoy the intimacy, I wouldn’t mind doing it again and surely by now after the last eighteen months of being in the dating sess pit, I have developed a thicker skin. Maybe I can set boundaries that will help to positively pursue a friends with benefits type situation without throwing myself into the streets screaming from torment because I’ve accidently fallen in love. Well let’s put this to the test, shall we? I rationalised my feelings first. There was no deep-rooted connection with this man, he was good company, it was good sex. We are in two completely different places in our lives, it wont work. Rationalisation complete. If I set clear boundaries, this could work. We both agreed the boundaries of this arrangement. At this point, I felt quite proud. Here I am, once a woman who begged a man to love her to a woman setting boundaries and excited to have non emotionally attached sex to fulfil my basic human needs. Bellissima.

Everyday, the rules would in some way, be broken. Each time me having to remind him that we’ve set boundaries and he’s not sticking to them. His response “I do what I want.” Now usually, I do enjoy a rogue man but this time, it irked me. A lot. I’ve put these boundaries in place to protect myself, as well as him, and him acknowledging them, agreeing to them and then ignoring them triggered the ick in me. It shows a lack of respect and also a lack of self-awareness, two things I have a low tolerance for thanks to my previous experiences.

I decided to put an end to it all because it was the right thing to do. Looking back now on my previous relationship, I did not respect his boundaries, I clearly violated them and now I can see how frustrating that would have been for him. However; the difference between me and him was I did the right thing, I decided to not continue because it would only get worse and inevitably, people’s feelings would get hurt and I didn’t want to be responsible for anyone’s hurt feelings.

Now that I have experienced, first hand, boundary violation, I thought I’d put together a short list so you can spot boundary abuse quicker than the average Joe.

1. You’ve set your boundaries and you’ve had to reiterate them over and over again.

This is the most clear-cut example of boundary violation. You’ve told them your boundary and they persistently do the things you’ve asked them not to do. You constantly remind them of those boundaries and defend the reasons why they have been put in place and they still continue on.

26 • CLOSEUP

2. You have told them you’re uncomfortable with the boundary violation and they carry on.

Not only do they not respect your boundaries, they also do not respect you. If you’re constantly being coerced into changing your boundaries or to do things you’re not comfortable with, those are key signs of a lack of respect.

3. Your gut tells you something’s not right.

The more the boundaries were pushed, the more uncomfortable I felt. At first, I would be really excited to hear from him but it got to the point where if I gave an inch, he’d take a mile. It just became a very awkward back and forth towards the end because I didn’t want to be rude, but I equally didn’t want to speak to him as much as he wanted to speak to me. I felt genuine frustration that he was not listening to me and I just wanted to avoid the situation entirely. Also, I wasn’t sure if he’d just turn up at my door one day. He knew where I lived and I’d have paranoid thoughts that if I just didn’t respond, he may just turn up at my door. Your gut is your future self, warning you of what’s to come.

4. They mock you.

After saying on numerous occasions that he is not sticking to the rules, the final nail in the coffin was when he asked me to FaceTime him whilst I was away with work. That privilege is for a select few and if I had a boyfriend, him too. I’d been working all day. I was tired and wanted alone time. My intention was not for him to be the first person I thought of in the morning or the last person at night but I felt as though he wanted to be. When I reminded him for the last time about the rules, he mocked me and minimised the point I was trying to make. Whilst I don’t think he was being manipulative, using humour or reducing their comments down to a joke can be an indication of manipulation so beware.

5. Gaslighting.

This one rears its ugly head all too often. When I finally sent the message to lay the situation to rest, I could’ve bet money that I would’ve heard a rebuttal to my reasoning, and I was right. He wanted to justify his actions and minimise the situation. I can see the signs of someone overstepping boundaries, I’ve done it myself. When I said I was concerned that he may get more attached if we continued, he non directly accused me of blowing it out of proportion. If he could’ve gotten away with messaging or calling every day, he would have. His actions were incredibly contradictory to his final statement yet I ‘overreacted’. Gaslighting will always be used as a get out of jail free card.

6. Emotional manipulation.

There was an evening when he called and asked me to meet him. Baring in mind he did not drive and lived on the other side of London and the expectation that I would go to him was a huge turn off firstly. Secondly, I told him numerous times that I was busy. He then joked about throwing himself off a building if I didn’t go. I laughed it off to begin with but as the rest of the red flags started piling up, I realised that this comment in itself was a direct indicator of things to come. That when he didn’t get his way, he would throw a manipulative curveball into the mix to garner a reaction from me. Unfortunately for him, I’ve heard it all before, so the answer from me was one that I’m sure, he did not expect to hear. “Try not to hurt yourself too much on your way down.” I should’ve left then as this is one of the worst red flags I’ve experienced.

Boundaries are tools to protect yourself from unnecessary harm. They are important in building healthy relationships and to teach others how to treat you in a capacity for you both to be happy and mutually respectful of one another’s needs. Let’s try to set more and respect all.

Until next time,

Big Mouth xx

ON TRIAL THE DEVIL

‘The Devil on Trial’ – Netflix Documentary Explores True Case That Inspired ‘The Conjuring 3’

The third franchise instalment The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It came along in 2021, and like the other films in the franchise it was inspired by a true story of true evil. The film was based on the first person in the US to use “the devil made me do it” in a murder defence, and an upcoming Netflix documentary explores that true story this year.

It was one of the most sensational murder trials of the 1980s. When Arne Cheyenne Johnson stabbed an acquaintance to death with a five-inch folding knife, Johnson presented one of the most shocking legal defences in history: not guilty by virtue of demonic possession. As the press put it, “the Devil made me do it.” Johnson’s shocking story began months earlier, when his girlfriend’s eleven-year-old brother, David, encountered a spectral figure looming at the foot of the bed and then started showing telltale signs of demonic possession. David suddenly spoke in Latin, levitated, and suffered beatings at the hands of an invisible demon. After a team of Catholic priests failed to drive the demon out, the case was taken up by Ed and Lorraine Warren. The Warrens had fought demons across the globe, but the Connecticut Devil would be one of their greatest challenges, and perhaps their most deadly.

Halloween CAKE

Inspired by spooky spiderwebs, this chocolatey red velvet cake is a real showstopper for Halloween parties.

Serves 12

Prep 40 mins

Cook 1 hr 10 mins

Ingredients

200g salted butter at room temperature, plus extra for greasing • 350g plain flour

• 1 tsp baking powder • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • 2½ tbsp cocoa powder • ¼ tsp fine sea salt • 375g caster sugar • 3 eggs

• 1½ tsp vanilla extract • 284ml carton buttermilk • 1 tbsp white wine vinegar • ½ x 15g pack Dr Oetker red gel food colour

For the cream cheese filling

Method

Preheat the oven to 170oC, gas mark 3. Grease the base and sides of a 23cm springform cake tin and line with baking parchment. Sift together all the dry ingredients except the sugar; set aside. Using electric beaters, cream the butter and sugar for 1 minute. Add the eggs, 1 at a time, beating after each addition, then beat in the vanilla. Beat in ¼ the dry ingredients, then 1/3 the buttermilk and repeat, until fully combined. Mix the vinegar and food colouring together; beat into the mixture. Scrape into the tin and spread until level; tap the tin on the work surface to knock out any air bubbles. Bake for 1 hour or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Set on a wire rack and leave to cool completely in the tin.

For the filling, use electric beaters to beat together the butter, soft cheese and icing sugar. Remove the cake from the tin and cut horizontally into 3 even layers (use a serrated knife). Take the bottom layer and place on a baking sheet, spread with ½ the filling, then repeat with the middle layer of cake and remainder of the filling; top with the final layer of cake. Leave to set in the fridge for 20-30 minutes. For the icing, melt the cream, chocolate and glucose together in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water (making sure the base of the bowl doesn’t touch the water). Melt the white chocolate in another bowl using the same method and pour into a small piping bag.

• 120g Philadelphia soft cheese • 120g icing sugar

120g salted butter at room temperature

For the chocolate icing

Invert the cake onto a wire rack so there is a flat surface for the icing; set over a tray to catch the drips. Working quickly, pour the dark chocolate icing over the middle of the cake. With a palette knife, use long strokes to push the icing over the sides to create an even coating over the whole cake.

300ml double cream

• 250g dark chocolate (70% cocoa), roughly chopped

• 1½ tbsp liquid glucose

• 50g white chocolate, roughly chopped

Starting slightly off centre, pipe a white chocolate spiral from the centre of the cake out to the edges (the tighter the lines, the more dramatic the effect). Take a cocktail stick and, starting from the centre, pull it through the white chocolate to the outside. Repeat, working around the cake, to create a spider’s web effect (see our Food Editor’s Top 5 page for more tips). Let the icing set for about 20-30 minutes. To store, keep refrigerated, and bring to room temperature before eating.

½ tbsp sunflower oil, plus extra for greasing • 100g unsalted butter, cubed • 1 tbsp golden syrup • 300g milk chocolate, broken into pieces • 150g dark chocolate, broken into pieces • 30g popcorn maize • 80g jelly sweets, such as Teeth & Lips and Fizzy Watermelon Slices, plus extra, if giving as gifts • 50g Essential Mini Pink & White Marshmallows • 16 large chocolate buttons • 1 tbsp milk chocolate chips • Edible eyes, to decorate • White writing icing, to decorate • Strawberry laces, to decorate

Method

Lightly oil a 23cm square, loosebottomed, non-stick cake tin and line with a strip of baking parchment. In a large saucepan and over a low heat, gently melt the butter, syrup and chocolate, stirring until well combined. Meanwhile, heat ½ tbsp oil in a separate, lidded saucepan and add the popcorn kernels. Put the lid on and cook according to packet instructions until all the corn has popped.

Take the chocolate pan off the heat and leave to cool for 10 minutes. Stir in the popcorn, sweets and marshmallows. Spoon the mix into the tin, and arrange the chocolate buttons on top adding two small chocolate chips to each button, to make ears. Cool, then cover and chill in the fridge for 3 hours until set (longer is fine).

Take the rocky road out of the fridge, remove from the tin and place on a board. Using the writing icing, pipe two dots to secure the eyes and two small fangs. Position the edible eyes and press 1cm lengths of strawberry lace over the fangs for a mouth. Using a large knife, cut into squares.

Pumpkin spice

HOT CHOCOLATE

The secret of this autumnal classic is in the spicing. The pumpkin purée makes the hot chocolate luxuriously silky, but omit it if you wish.

Serves 2

Ingredients

500ml whole milk • 50g dark chocolate (70% cocoa), finely chopped, plus extra to serve

• 2 tbsp America’s Finest Solid Pack Pumpkin • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon • ¼ tsp ground ginger • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg • 2 tsp light muscovado sugar • Whipped or squirty cream, to serve (optional)

Method

Cook’s tip

For a dairy-free version, this works brilliantly with barista-style oat drink (and a plant-based alternative to the whipped cream). You could turn the hot chocolate into a mocha by adding a shot of espresso.

Place all the ingredients in a medium saucepan, add a pinch of salt and heat gently, stirring until steaming and evenly combined. Whisk with a balloon whisk until smooth and frothy. Pour into 2 mugs and top with the cream, if using, and an extra sprinkling of chopped chocolate.

TRAVEL

Dubai is an experience like no other, a journey to a city that seamlessly marries tradition and innovation. From the moment you arrive, you're greeted by a skyline punctuated by iconic skyscrapers, including the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building. Dubai is a destination that indulges all your senses, from its sunsoaked beaches to the bustling souks where you can haggle for treasures. The city is a shopper's paradise, with luxury malls offering everything from haute couture to traditional handicrafts. Dubai's culinary scene is a fusion of global flavours, with Michelin-starred restaurants and vibrant street food stalls sharing the spotlight. Whether you're seeking adventure in the dunes of the desert, exploring the rich culture and history of the region, or simply relaxing in the lap of luxury at world-class resorts, Dubai has something to offer every traveller. It's a place where modernity meets tradition, creating an unforgettable vacation experience.

Dubai, the city of opulence and architectural marvels, is a destination that promises the grandeur of the Middle East. Amidst the towering skyscrapers and the golden deserts, there's a gem that offers a taste of Thai luxury right on the shores of the Arabian Gulf. Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort, a tranquil haven inspired by Thai aesthetics, is a testament to lavishness and relaxation. During a week-long stay, I had the privilege of experiencing the resort's enchanting Lagoon Access

room, indulging in its sumptuous breakfast buffet, exploring its myriad dining options, and, in particular, savouring the delights of the acclaimed Mekong restaurant.

Upon arriving at Anantara the Palm Dubai Resort, the first thing that struck me was its elegant, Thai-inspired architecture. The blend of traditional Thai design with modern luxury seamlessly immerses guests in a world of serenity and comfort. I was especially eager to experience the Lagoon Access room, a unique offering where you can swim straight from your private balcony into the resort's beautiful lagoon.

Entering the room, I was greeted with a spacious and tastefully decorated interior that exuded tranquillity. The room was adorned with intricate details, creating a sense of cultural immersion. The highlight, of course, was the balcony. Stepping onto it, I was met with a breathtaking view of the resort's lush gardens and the waters of the lagoon. The balcony was furnished with comfortable seating, perfect for sipping on a morning coffee while dipping my toes into the lagoon waters. One of the standout features of the lagoon room was the direct access to the lagoon. It's hard to describe the joy of being able to step right from your room into the warm embrace of the lagoon. Whether you want to take a leisurely swim, sunbathe on the deck, or simply relax in the privacy of your own slice of paradise, the lagoon room provides the perfect setting.

Mornings at the Anantara are an absolute delight, thanks to the lavish breakfast buffet served at Crescendo, the resort's all-day dining restaurant. The buffet spread was nothing short of extraordinary, offering a wide array of international and local dishes to satisfy every palate.

The breakfast buffet featured an impressive selection of freshly baked pastries, tropical fruits, cold cuts, cheeses, and a variety of bread and spreads. For those who prefer a heartier breakfast, there was a live egg station where you could have your eggs cooked to perfection. But what truly stood out was the extensive selection of traditional Middle Eastern dishes, such as freshly made falafel, hummus, and local bread.

The attention to detail and quality of ingredients at most of the Anantara restaurants were evident, making it a memorable culinary experience.

Anantara The Palm prides itself on delivering exceptional service, and throughout my stay, I found this claim to be absolutely true. The staff members were not only professional but also incredibly warm and attentive. They went out of their way to ensure that every guest felt like a VIP.

One aspect of the resort that deserves special mention is its beautifully landscaped grounds. The lush gardens, meandering pathways, and swaying palm trees create a serene atmosphere that feels like a world away from the bustling city of Dubai. Whether you're strolling through the gardens, lounging by the pool, or enjoying a private moment on the beach, the resort's ambiance is one of tranquillity and relaxation.

One of the culinary highlights of my stay at the Anantara was dining at Mekong, the resort’s signature Pan-Asian restaurant. Its cuisine follows the Mekong through China, Vietnam and Thailand.

The restaurant's ambiance was a perfect blend of sophistication and traditional Thai charm. The dimly lit interior, adorned with Thai artwork and sculptures, transported me to the streets of Bangkok. But it was the menu that truly stole the show.

We began our culinary journey with a selection of appetizers, including chicken satay and prawn toast. The chicken satay was tender and succulent, served with a rich peanut sauce that had just the right amount of sweetness and heat.

TRAVEL
“THE LUSH GARDENS, MEANDERING PATHWAYS, AND SWAYING PALM TREES CREATE a serene atmosphere THAT FEELS LIKE A world away from thecitybustling of Dubai.”

For the main course, we couldn't resist ordering some classic Thai dishes like sweet and sour chicken, aromatic duck pancakes, noodles and rice. The sweet and sour chicken was a revelation, with perfectly crispy chicken pieces bathed in a luscious sweet and tangy sauce served in a huge pineapple, the attention to presentation at Mekong was incredible. The noodles were expertly prepared and bursting with authentic Thai flavours. The aromatic duck pancakes were a true masterpiece, with tender duck slices, crisp vegetables, and two choice of sauce that danced with flavours.

What sets Mekong apart is its commitment to authenticity. The chefs use traditional Thai cooking techniques and source the finest ingredients to create dishes that are as close to Thailand as you can get in Dubai. It was a culinary journey that left our taste buds tingling with delight.

A week at Anantara the Palm Resort felt like a dream come true. From the luxurious Lagoon Access room to the exquisite breakfast buffet, impeccable service, and the unforgettable dining experience at Mekong, every moment was a celebration of luxury and relaxation. The resort offers a perfect blend of Thai elegance and Middle Eastern charm, making it a destination in itself.
