PHARRELL WILLIAMS:

A Multifaceted Journey through Music, Fashion, and Creativity

In the space of a few short years, it has come to represent much more than a name; shorthand for a universe of tireless creativity and innovation. Pharrell Williams is a revered musician, record-breaking singer and outlandish producer – responsible for hits by Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z and Daft Punk, to highlight but a few – and a fashion designer turned fashion icon.

6 • CLOSEUP COVER INTERVIEW

In the realm of modern pop culture, few figures have left an indelible mark quite like Pharrell Williams. From his groundbreaking music to his influential fashion ventures, Pharrell’s creative prowess and eclectic talents have propelled him to the forefront of multiple industries. Pharrell Lanscilo Williams grew up in an environment rich in music and artistry, setting the stage for his multifaceted journey.

Pharrell’s upbringing was marked by a deep connection to music. His parents were both involved in the field—his mother was a teacher and his father a handyman and drummer. This familial environment laid the foundation for his future musical pursuits. As a teenager, Pharrell formed a production duo, The Neptunes, alongside his friend Chad Hugo. The pair quickly gained recognition for their innovative sound, blending hip-hop, R&B, and electronic elements.

The Neptunes were soon in demand as hip-hop producers and writers, with a signature style that mixed influences from soul, rock, and other musical genres. Neptunes-produced hits include Noreaga’s “Superthug” (1998), Mary J. Blige’s “Steal Away” (2001), Britney Spears’s “I’m a Slave 4 U” (2001), Nelly’s “Hot in Herre” (2002), Justin Timberlake’s “Rock Your Body” (2003), Kelis’s “Milkshake” (2003), and Snoop Dogg’s “Drop It like It’s Hot” (2004). Williams, often assisted by Hugo, penned the lyrics for many of those songs as well. In 2004 Timberlake’s Neptunesproduced album Justified won the Grammy Award for best pop vocal album, and the Neptunes were named producer of the year (nonclassical). The Neptunes were also among the producers contributing to Mariah Carey’s 2005 album The Emancipation of MiMi, which won a Grammy for best contemporary R&B album.

When asked in an interview who is the greatest music producer of all time, Pharrell said; “Quincy Jones, obviously! Life without music would be like a human being without sense. I was always making music as a kid, but never thought I could do something with it. I always knew I was going to do music, I just never knew what – whether I would end up as a terrible music teacher or an art teacher who was always asking his friends to come over and play on the side. But this was how it was written and I give thanks every day.”

In the early 00’s, Pharrell’s collaboration with rapper Jay-Z on “Frontin’” catapulted him into the mainstream music scene. The songs success marked the beginning of his solo career, which led to the release of his debut album “In My Mind” in 2006. The album showcased Pharrell’s unique style and laid the groundwork for his future musical exploration.

COVER INTERVIEW

Pharrell’s musical evolution has been characterised by a constant desire to push boundaries and challenge conventions. His collaborations with artists like Daft Punk on “Get Lucky” and Robin Thicke on “Blurred Lines” demonstrated his ability to create infectious, genreblurring hits that resonated with audiences worldwide. His production work extended beyond the music charts, contributing to the success of numerous artists across different genres. “Music brings people together. Music is a force that reaches people wherever they are and at any time. Nothing gets in the way because it’s able to fill up all the space around us. Music is an incredible power and I am deeply grateful that I can write songs that communicate with people all over the world.”

A defining moment in Pharrell’s career came with the release of “Happy” in 2013—a song that became a global anthem of positivity and joy. Its upbeat melody and heartfelt lyrics transcended language barriers, solidifying Pharrell’s status as a cultural icon. The song’s success also highlighted his knack for creating music that resonates on a deeply emotional level.

Pharrell’s influence extends beyond the realm of music, encompassing his impact on fashion and creative entrepreneurship. Williams’ other projects included the premium street-wear clothing lines Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream (with Japanese music producer Nigo). He also collaborated on a unisex fragrance with the perfume division of the fashion house Comme des Gar ƈ ons. His distinct sense of style has made him a fashion icon, and he has collaborated with brands such as Adidas to design his own line of trainers. However, one of his most notable ventures in the fashion world has been his association with luxury brand Louis Vuitton.

In 2006, Pharrell teamed up with Louis Vuitton’s creative director, Marc Jacobs, to design a line of sunglasses. This collaboration marked a significant moment where music and fashion converged, further establishing Pharrell as a trailblazer in the crossover between these two industries. “Fashion is great. As a performer, you’re on stage wearing a lot of different outfits and there’s always been a connection for me. I love the way fashion helps people express their individuality. It’s great when I see guys come up with their own looks or when I see someone wearing an item I’ve designed and match it with other designers’ creations. That’s where the real power and excitement of fashion come into play and you see people creating their own distinctive style and identity.”

Pharrell’s connection to Louis Vuitton deepened over the years. In 2017, he was appointed as the brand’s firstever Human Race Creative Director. In this role, he was given the creative freedom to infuse his artistic vision into various aspects of Louis Vuitton’s collections, from clothing to accessories. In a recent interview with GQ magazine, Pharrell mentions that he does have one

superpower that he is confident he can rely on in this new role. And it relates directly to ideas he has for the brand about ambassadorship and building community.

“All of my friends are GOATs,” he says. “I’m a shepherd who happens to know a lot of GOATS, as you can see in the campaign.” That campaign he’s referring to, his first for the house, stars Rihanna, wearing a Damo shirt, unbuttoned around her pregnant belly, her arms full with colorfully, buttery leather Speedy bags. Pharrell knew he wanted her to be the first face of the brand. “I walked in with that,” he says. “I was like, ‘I want her.’” But there are plenty more GOATs in Pharrell’s pasture. “I’m serious,” he reiterates. “That’s the one thing I can brag about: my friends. Some people brag on money, some people brag on possession, the things that they have, but I brag on my associations because they’re gifts. All of my friends are GOATs. And if you come playing with me, I will send my goats to your yard and they will eat all of your grass. They clear mountains of grass.”

Williams’ approach to fashion and design was rooted in his belief in individuality and self-expression. In an interview with Vogue, he stated, “When we talk about diversity and inclusivity, it’s not just about the community, it’s about everyone.” This sentiment underscored his mission to create fashion that transcended boundaries and celebrated the beauty of diversity. Pharrell reflected on his creative process, saying, “I’ve always tried to use my music to communicate a positive message... I’ve always believed that art is like a tool. It’s a weapon, but it’s a good weapon.” This perspective has been a driving force behind his music and creative endeavours, reinforcing his commitment to spreading positivity and pushing boundaries.

Discussing his role at Louis Vuitton in an interview, Pharrell emphasized his dedication to inclusivity in design: “I’m not here to dictate what the other designers do. I’m here to bring a special type of vibration and energy to it, and try to lift it and make it better every time.” This collaborative and uplifting approach reflected his desire to leave a lasting impact on the fashion industry.

Pharrell Williams’ journey through music, fashion, and creativity is a testament to his insatiable curiosity and artistic genius. From his early days as a producer to his global success as a solo artist, he has consistently defied expectations and shaped the cultural landscape. His role at Louis Vuitton exemplifies his ability to bridge gaps between different industries and create art that resonates on a universal level. Through his music, fashion, and words, Pharrell continues to inspire individuals to embrace their individuality and use their creativity as a force for positive change in the world.

BUILDING AN EMPIRE: The Inspirational Journey of SJR London

Stephanie Jackson Recruitment is a luxury retail recruitment agency built by sibling duo and fashion enthusiasts Stephanie and Christopher Jackson. With over a decade of experience in frontline fashion and shop floor, the siblings have insider knowledge that helps them provide the best talent for luxury fashion houses, brands, and stores. Here, we discover how the powerhouse recruitment agency went from a spare bedroom, to working with the world’s most renowned luxury fashion brands.

SJR has become the most sought-after fashion recruitment agency in London. What started as a modest small business in a spare bedroom quickly evolved into a luxury retail agency that now works with some of the most renowned and elite fashion brands in the world. The agency’s remarkable journey included partnering with prestigious brands from across the globe and receiving accolades for their unrivalled commitment to excellence.

Stephanie and Christopher Jackson, founders of the fashion recruitment agency, are driven by their incessantly shared passion for luxury retail. They felt the need to bridge the gap between top-tier talent and luxury fashion labels, transforming the hiring practices. The temp agency is known for its personalised approach toward every requirement, dedication, and immense understanding of the nuances of luxury fashion and retail.

When asked how they do things differently to other agencies, Stephanie said, “We knew that if we wanted to make a significant impact in the luxury retail recruitment space, we had to differentiate ourselves. We were relentless in our pursuit of perfection, focusing on building genuine connections with both our clients and candidates.”

Their unwavering commitment to quality and deep understanding of their clients’ unique requirements is what directed the luxury retail recruitment agency to an upward trajectory. It was not long before their client roster grew as fast as their reputation for delivering exceptional talent. “Our ability to understand the distinct culture and ethos of each luxury brand allows us to identify candidates who not only possess the necessary skills, but also embody the brands essence. This approach has been instrumental in strengthening our ties with fashion powerhouses,” Stephanie added.

The luxury retail recruitment agency’s portfolio is steadily increasing beyond London’s boundaries with successful placements all over the world, and as their reach is expanding, their expectations to fill complex roles are also increasing. “Collaborating with renowned luxury brands like Hermes and De Beers is a dream come true,” Christopher said.

“To see our agency’s name associated with these global icons was a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team,” he added.

SJR London is now a leading luxury retail agency and a reputed temp agency. It is known for building long-lasting relationships that also contribute to the mutual growth of its clients and candidates alike. “We are incredibly proud of how far we have come. While the road has been challenging, and we still have a long way to go, the knowledge that we have contributed to shaping the future of luxury retail recruitment keeps us motivated to push boundaries even further, and we are excited to see what the future holds,” Stephanie said.

RED Alert

People always want to know about ‘the colour of the season’, and while fuchsia is still having its moment thanks to the Barbie movie there’s no doubt amongst fashion insiders that the real on-trend hue for autumn is red. Not a soft red, not a ruby, a crimson or a burgundy, but good old fashioned scarlet. Wear it head-to-toe for bonus points.

LIFE OVERLO AD DEALING WITH

It’s the start of cosy season. Long walks in the park, trench coats, the leaves are falling from the trees and the smell of crisp London is in the air. It’s that time of year where you snuggle on the sofa with a good true crime documentary in the background whilst you plan your weekend trip to Europe with your bae.

Oh, how I long for these moments again. Instead, I’ll be looking forward to slipping on the wet leaves as I march down the road to my job, ordering a fat b*tch Chinese for one on a Saturday night and wondering if this is the year, I’ll have a boyfriend for Christmas. Now, just like dogs, boyfriends are not just for Christmas, they’ll hopefully last a little longer, but with my luck, a couple of months would suffice to get me out of my super funk.

I haven’t had sex in almost a year, the thought of it makes me shiver. After my fertility treatment, I haven’t felt myself in a couple of months and I have turned into the grinch who stole happiness. I know, I’m always here telling everyone about the power of positive thinking, but let’s be honest, we all have our moments where we just want to tell everyone to piss off.

Last Friday, I sat on the sofa all day and did not move. I put my phone on DND and binge watched Outnumbered on Netflix and for the first time in a long time, my Uber Eats delivery guy saw me more than once that day. I swear I saw sadness in his eyes as he handed over my second kebab.

I think we are going through a bit of a retrograde at the moment. Is anyone else feeling super tired, lethargic, emotional and downright f*cked off? l am, I sleep but still feel tired, I feel

anxious and ratty and I’m not happy with the current trajectory of my life. It feels like all the crappy things I’ve been hiding from have now decided to creep to the surface and I’m dealing with everything all at once.

But you know what? Shit happens. Life comes at you fast sometimes. If I were to provide an illustration of how I feel at the moment, I’m lying on the ground and my wardrobe, my laptop, my notebooks and my bookcase as well as the takeaway boxes from Friday are all tumbling on top of me and I’m just laying there taking a beating. I’m bruised and I’m defeated. Rain on Me by Ashanti on repeat in my head.

So, I’ve resigned to letting it all fall on top of me and then I’m going to try and tunnel my way out. I thought I’d share my coping mechanisms with you guys, in case you’re in the trenches with me.

1. Prioritise your stuff

Usually, I would lead with practicing gratitude but I have to be more pragmatic on this occasion, as there’s a lot to get through. I’ve written down a list of all the things I need to “fix” for me to get back to some kind of mental peace. I have categorised said list into ‘crucial’, ‘must do’ and ‘can wait’.

I have then sub-categorised each list into QW (quick wins), MAD (make a dent) and WFO (waiting for others). There’s a method to my madness so stay with me.

If there is anything on the list I am in control of and can resolve quickly, regardless of if they’re crucial or not, do those first

22 • CLOSEUP

and get those off the list. To add a bit more pizzazz to my list, I colour code. Red (not complete), amber (in progress) and green (completed). Once I’ve completed something, highlight in green and leave on the list. My process driven side of my brain loves seeing the colours change.

It sounds so mundane but treat your life problems like a workload – keep it pragmatic and organised and you’ll soon get through it all.

You’ve been putting off a project? Make a dent. You’ve been putting off dating? Just do it. The anxiety of dating is probably worse than the date itself. Your finances are affecting your stress levels? Put that excel planner together and brainstorm methods of making extra cash, work backwards from a goal and most importantly, declutter! Declutter your life to declutter your mind!

2. Say no

Following on from my razzle dazzle list, is then being really honest with yourself in terms of what you can take on without having a breakdown and eventually failing at everything.

Last month, I was writing two scripts for two different movies, we were doing a lot of project work for Big Mouth, working on a huge project for work which could be life-changing, plus, I was writing a pitch for a major streaming site for a mini-series. Not only that, I’m trying to juggle dating, health, gym, friends and family. No wonder I’m teetering on the edge of a full breakdown.

As much as it pained me to do it, I’ve had to put some projects on the backburner to focus on my main priorities, the ones which pay bills and will have the most impact, quicker. We can’t do it all, and sometimes we just need to be honest with ourselves. That’s not failure, that’s growth, that’s respect for yourself and for those who you’ve promised your time to. All work and no play makes Big Mouth a miserable cow.

3. Spend time in nature.

You’ve never felt worse after leaving the gym or going outside, have you? Knowing the absurdity of British weather, you just never know what you’re going to be met with, but I say just get out there.

The other day, I took a lovely gentle stroll in the forest. It was wonderful, the sun was peeking through the trees as I just sat on a bench with a coffee, listening to The Receipts Podcast; those ladies do such good for my soul and I could feel a little crack of a smile peeking through. Then it started pissing down with rain. I wasn’t aggravated, I actually really enjoyed it. I felt very Drew Barrymore in that moment and I smiled even more.

There’s something about big ploppy rain pouring down your face that makes you feel really grounded and connected. I was pretty soaked but it was a perfect excuse to get home, have a nice long shower, make a hot chocolate and just relax. Nature is nurturing.

4. Don’t punish yourself for past mistakes

I have an awful habit of dwelling on my past mistakes and asking myself the what-ifs. What if I did things differently? What if I carried on fighting and stuck it out? What if I didn’t say those things I said? This tends to happen when life life’s a bit too much and I get stuck in my head or under my proverbial ton of poop.

I am a strong believer in everything happens for a reason. The things you wanted may not have been what you needed. Those doors closed to open new paths to your true destination. I think the way your life pans out is already written but that’s not to say you should continually stay in patterns in your life which haven’t served or didn’t suit you.

Now that I’m stuck in this rut and reflecting on “where I went wrong” I remember that I haven’t gone wrong at all. I have all these pressures and fears because I am constantly outside of my comfort zone pushing myself to be better and to do better and I’m navigating the unknown which is so amazing.

I look back, I dwell, I remind myself of how brave I’ve been and how far I’ve come and then I move on. I say this so much, but it’s true, this feeling is fleeting. Feel it, deal with it and move on from it. Give yourself grace and love. Practice acceptance and contentment. You wake up every day and you continue on. Be proud.

PGHS 11+ ENTRANCE

We provide an inspiring, challenging and supportive environment with superb specialist facilities and our pupils achieve outstanding year-on-year GCSE results. PALMERS GREEN HIGH SCHOOL www.pghs.co.uk 020 8886 1135 office@pghs.co.uk

Nurturing GIRLS’ EXCELLENCE

Palmers Green High School (PGHS) is an academically selective all-girls school, where pupils are challenged to realise their educational goals whilst still being able to be their own true authentic selves. Our Senior Department educates girls in years 7-11. The pastoral and academic support we provide enables pupils to reach their full potential and we are proud of the fantastic GCSE results we achieve each year.

The benefit of all-girls

A recent investigation into the effects of all-girls education found that alumnae demonstrated stronger academic skills, greater engagement with their studies, higher confidence in science and technology skills and stronger community involvement. Girls in same-sex schools have more opportunities to excel athletically and take on school leadership roles. At PGHS there are no such things as ‘girls’ subjects’; all subjects are for girls and ours excel across the curriculum, with a large number of pupils going on to study sciences and maths at A-level and pursue degrees and careers in STEM fields.

Small but with BIG opportunities

Our pupils also benefit from small class sizes throughout. In the Senior School, teaching groups are usually between 12-16 pupils, and often lower for the crucial GCSE years. Our teachers have significantly more time to give feedback, support and extension to all.

EDUCATION

Exciting opportunities

Students also have greater access to the many opportunities beyond the classroom, such as participating in a school musical production, sports team or chess tournament. Our vibrant extra-curricular programme aims to develop confidence and resilience. We also offer a rich calendar of day and residential visits, field trips and expeditions in the UK and abroad.

Our excellent transport links

Situated mid-way between Winchmore Hill and Palmers Green train stations, Hertford North, Hadley Wood and Finsbury Park are all less than 30 minutes away. Four different bus routes serve the local area and Southgate Underground Station on the Piccadilly Line is a short hop away.

11+ Assessments needn’t be testing

Unlike many independent schools, at PGHS we are not looking for the finished product, we are looking for potential and many ask ‘how do we assess for that at 11+ entry into our Senior School?’

We use the ISEB Common Pre-test. This is a series of online adaptive tests that are based on the Year 6 curriculum. All are multiple choice and cover English, Mathematics, Verbal and Non-Verbal questions. There is no need to prepare for the assessment beyond looking at the familiarisation materials on their website. We also include a traditional pen-and-paper creative writing task, giving pupils the opportunity to express themselves and show off their writing skills.

We do everything we can to ensure that the 11+ Assessment Day is not stressful for our candidates (they always enjoy our delicious biscuits!). Those who have shown potential across the assessments will come in for an interview with the Head. This is a real chance to show us who they are, where their passions lie and demonstrate why they would be an asset to PGHS.

We hold our Year 7 entry day early in November; this year it will be Saturday 11th. Our aim is for the pupils to have completed the process before the Christmas holidays so that they can then relax and enjoy their exciting final year of primary school.

Join our local family

We welcome all prospective pupils who are interested in joining our Year 7 class in September 2024 to attend one of our Senior School Working Open Mornings and 11+ Taster Day in the Autumn Term. Register online or call us on 020 8886 1135 to find out more.

Peri-menopause and You

Menopause officially marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years. This life stage is well known, but there are different stages within menopause, such as peri-menopause, that are less well known, yet not without symptoms.

What is peri-menopause?

Peri-menopause is the preliminary stage of the menopause, and for many women, a time of considerable change and emotional upheaval – although incredibly, it’s not talked about nearly enough.

Medically speaking, peri-menopause starts when the first menopausal symptoms are noticed, typically mid-40s, and ends a year after the last menstrual bleed, or the point in time when menopause has been reached. Biologically speaking, peri-menopause marks a decline in the production of hormones that drive the menstrual cycle, specifically oestrogen and progesterone.

Only 12 per cent of women just wake up one day and never have another period. The other 88 per cent notice fluctuations in their cycle as their ovaries lose steam: their cycles are longer or shorter than usual, heavier or lighter, or characterised by intermittent spotting.

Am I peri-menopausal?

Peri-menopause symptoms can vary greatly, and in some women, are similar to symptoms of PMS.

Just as menopause is different for every woman, so is perimenopause, but a few more frequently encountered symptoms include irregular, painful periods or periods that are heavier than usual, breast pain, hair loss, anxiety and irritability, dryness of various tissues (skin, eyes, vaginal), temperature irregularity, trouble sleeping and insomnia (and consequently tiredness), low mood and libido, and muscle and joint aches and pains.

Help with peri-menopause

A key point to appreciate is that your adrenal glands (which produce adrenalin when you are stressed) are able to make ‘back-up’ hormones to buffer the fall of oestrogen and progesterone during menopause. But they are less able to do this if you are highly stressed and therefore demanding adrenalin production. Rest and relaxation are some of the most important ‘treatments’ for keeping the transition from perimenopause to menopause a happy time. No matter how hard-pushed for time you are, factor in some R&R as a matter of priority.

The adrenal glands need plenty of magnesium and vitamin B. Magnesium levels drop in the week before your period, so if you’re deficient it tends to show up markedly during that week, as anxiety, muscle tension, cramping, and bloating. Monitoring

how you feel during that time will therefore give a good clue as to how your magnesium levels are faring. Some wonderfully rich sources of magnesium include: dark green vegetables such as spinach and chard, apples, artichokes, avocados, bananas, black beans, nuts (almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews and hazels), brown rice, dates, figs, dried apricots, the list goes on.

Smoothing the transition naturally

There are also a number of natural and herbal remedies that can help to smooth this transition for you.

1. A.Vogel’s Menopause Support (£8.99 for 30 tablets, avogel.co.uk) tackles all stages of menopause, and contains soy isoflavones which provide a source of gentle plantoestrogen for your body. These can be supportive when oestrogen levels are low.

2. Sage helps to correct sweat regulation and diminish hot flushes, and fresh sage drops diluted in a little water three times daily can really help. Try Menosan Sage Drops (£11.99 for 50ml, avogel.co.uk) or for extra oomph, Menoforce Sage Tablets (£15.99 for 30 tablets, avogel.co.uk).

3. For symptoms of PMS during peri-menopause, it has to be Agnus castus (£11.99 for 50ml, avogel.co.uk). This is the herb of choice if symptoms start after ovulation and disappear once menstrual bleeding starts. It can be very useful if symptoms also include painful periods and breast tenderness.

4. And for trouble sleeping, there’s Valerian.

5. For emotional support during any time of challenge, nothing beats exercise. It’s a great way of producing happy chemicals (endorphins), metabolising carbs, toning muscle (which then burns more calories), and working off unhelpful or aggressive feelings.

PREPPY PAGES

As pupils and students across the land start to hear the siren call of school and university drawing them back to academia, what better time to reflect upon some of the great school stories and campus novels?

Nicholas Nickleby

Inside the pages:

When Nicholas’s father dies he, his mother and sister are left penniless. To earn his keep, Nicholas becomes a tutor at Dotheboys Hall but soon discovers that the headmaster, Wackford Squeers, is a one-eyed tyrant who insists on a harsh regime. Nicholas embarks on an adventure that takes him from loathsome boarding schools to the London stage.

Although comic elements help lighten some of the plot’s darker moments and the novel concludes with a happy and just ending, Nicholas Nickleby is a sharp and moving social critique.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

Inside the pages: Romantic, heroic, comic and tragic, unconventional schoolmistress

Jean Brodie has become an iconic figure in post-war fiction. Her glamour, unconventional ideas and manipulative charm hold dangerous sway over her girls at the Marcia Blaine Academy – ‘the creme de la creme’ – who become the Brodie ‘set’, introduced to a privileged world of adult games that they will never forget. Muriel Spark’s The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie was adapted into a successful stage play, and later a film directed by Ronald Neame and starring Maggie Smith.

Goodbye Mr Chips

Inside the pages:

Mr Chipping is a quiet, unassuming teacher at Brookfield Grammar School – a wholly conventional schoolteacher who never veers from his proscribed routines.

Until the day he meets Katherine, who charms him and his students and teaches Mr Chipping that education is about more than just the hours spent in the schoolroom. As his love for Katherine blooms, Mr Chipping develops a sense of humour and a broad view of his role as a teacher and a friend to his students, becoming the beloved ‘Mr Chips’ to generations of schoolboys.

Inside the pages:

Lee Fiora is a shy fourteen-year-old when she leaves small-town Indiana for a scholarship at Ault, an exclusive boarding school in Massachusetts. Her head is filled with images from the school brochure of handsome boys in sweaters leaning against old brick buildings, girls running with lacrosse sticks across pristine athletics fields, everyone singing hymns in chapel. But as she soon learns, Ault is a minefield of unstated rules and incomprehensible social rituals, and Lee must work hard to find – and maintain – her place in the pecking order.

Real Life

Inside the pages: Wallace has spent his summer in the lab breeding a strain of microscopic worms. He is four years into a biochemistry degree at a lakeside Midwestern university, a life that’s a world away from his childhood in Alabama. His father died a few weeks ago, but Wallace didn’t go back for the funeral. For reasons of selfpreservation, he has become used to keeping a wary distance even from those closest to him. But, over the course of one blustery endof-summer weekend, the destruction of his work and a series of intense confrontations force Wallace to grapple with both the trauma of the past, and the question of the future.

Fun is an essential ingredient at Woodlands Day Nursery and Preschool where the care and education opportunities for each and every child are as extraordinary as our colleagues who provide them.

Preparing for school at Woodlands Day Nursery

Following a bittersweet graduation ceremony and celebrations for their school leavers, devoted practitioners from Woodlands Day Nursery in Barnet bid an emotional farewell to the children they had cared for since joining as babies. Ahead of their September start date, the Early Years professionals have been preparing pre-schoolers for their next steps in education with a comprehensive school readiness programme, covering topics ranging from self-care to phonics, enabling them to practice fundamental skills such as dressing themselves and writing and identifying their names. Using the nursery’s state-ofthe-art ICT resources, toys and equipment, stimulating learning spaces and special role play areas, children have been building on other key curriculum focus areas including early maths and mark making to ensure they are confident and independent learners, ready to embrace the milestone transition. From creating their own ‘Children’s Council’ to promote critical thinking and communication skills, to using school dinner trays during mealtimes to ease into the new routine, pre-schoolers are immersed in an array of experiences to promote self-esteem and build foundations. Meanwhile, families are supported throughout the process by dedicated nursery practitioners and provided with helpful resources including books published by Childbase

Partnership specialists, as well as exclusive access to the ‘Childbase at Home’ website, which is filled with bespoke materials and free parent masterclasses to underpin teaching. Woodlands also prides itself on having strong relationships with local schools, whose teachers are invited to the setting annually to talk to prospective pupils about their new schools, providing reassurance on what is to come and build initial bonds with staff. This duty of care remains even after pre-schoolers have left the nursery, with staff teams following up with schools and families to make sure the settling in process is as smooth as possible and offering their expert advice and input wherever possible.

All-in-one vegetarian LASAGNE

Serves 4 Prep 5 mins

Cook 30 mins

Ingredients

1 tbsp olive oil • 200g chilled Cooks’ Ingredients Soffritto • 500g Italian passata with chopped basil • 6 fresh lasagne sheets, halved lengthways

• 350g chilled Quorn Mince • 125g mozzarella, drained and torn •

1 handful basil leaves

Method

Cook’s tip

You could use a defrosted 300g pack of frozen Quorn mince instead of chilled in this recipe, if you wish.

Preheat the grill to high. Heat the oil in a large ovenproof frying pan or shallow casserole dish over a medium-high heat. Fry the soffritto for 7 minutes, stirring regularly.

Tip in the passata, then fill the carton with water and add to the pan. Simmer for 10 minutes, then stir in the pasta strips and mince; simmer for another 5 minutes.

Scatter the torn mozzarella over the top and pop under the grill for 5 minutes. Grind over some black pepper and scatter over the basil to serve.

Sausage, tomato & walnut pesto on TOAST

Local sausages, fresh herbs, good bread and a splash of olive oil combine to make a gloriously adaptable meal.

If you find a quality, readymade pesto, use that instead and enjoy a sundowner while the sausages cook.

Serves 4

Prep 5 mins

Cook 20 mins

Ingredients

6 pork sausages (ideally with a little spice)

• 400g pack cherry vine tomatoes

• 1 clove/s garlic, crushed • 40g walnuts (or almonds, hazelnuts or pine nuts), roughly chopped, plus extra to serve (optional)

• 25g pack basil, leaves picked and torn, plus extra to serve (optional)

• 30g pecorino (or any hard cheese), grated

• 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for drizzling

• 4 slice/s pane pugliese (or any good sourdough)

• Green salad, to serve (optional)

Method

Cook’s tip

If making the pesto, double up the ingredients so you can eat the rest tossed through pasta or loosened with oil to make a quick dressing for salad another day.

Heat the grill to medium and arrange the sausages on a grill rack. Grill according to pack instructions or until golden and cooked through with no pink meat remaining (15-20 minutes). Add the tomatoes to the grill rack for the final 5 minutes of cooking time. Transfer to a board; when cool enough to handle, slice the sausages into roughly 2cm diagonal slices.

Meanwhile, make the pesto. If using a pestle and mortar or a bowl and rolling pin, crush the garlic and nuts together until they form a paste, then add the basil leaves with a pinch of salt (in batches if needed) and grind to a paste. Add the cheese, then slowly drizzle in the olive oil until it becomes emulsified. If using a blender, add all the ingredients apart from the grated cheese and whizz together, then stir through the cheese; season. It should form a thick, coarse pesto but you can add 1-2 tbsp water to loosen if you like.

Toast the bread (or grill/pan fry if no toaster). Divide the pesto between the toasts. Arrange the tomatoes and sausage slices over the top. Scatter with extra nuts and a few basil leaves (if using), then serve straight away with a drizzle of olive oil over the top, a grinding of black pepper and a green salad, if liked.

TRAYBAKE

A deliciously simple summer cake with a touch of aromatic spice and strawberries both inside the sponge and to decorate.

Serves 10

Prep 25 mins

Cook 30 mins

Ingredients

250g unsalted butter, softened • 250g caster sugar • 4 British Blacktail Medium

Free Range Eggs • 250g self-raising flour • 1 tsp baking powder • ½ tsp fine salt • 6 tbsp milk • 6 cardamom pods, seeds removed and crushed • ½ tsp vanilla extract • 365g pack No. 1 Speciality Strawberries, hulled, 150g cut into 1cm chunks, 215g reserved

Icing

150g unsalted butter • 300g icing sugar, sifted • ¼ tsp fine salt • ½ tsp vanilla extract • 2 tbsp milk

Method

Preheat the oven to 190°C, gas mark 5. Grease and line a 30cm x 20cm cake tin. In a mixing bowl, use an electric hand mixer to beat the butter and sugar for 5-8 minutes until pale and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, with 1 tbsp flour. Sieve in the remaining flour, baking powder and salt, then fold to combine. Fold in the milk, cardamom, vanilla and strawberry chunks.

Pour into the cake tin and bake for 20-30 minutes until golden and risen; a skewer inserted into the centre should come out clean. Cool in the tin for 15 minutes, then remove from the tin; transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

To make the icing, in a large mixing bowl, use an electric hand mixer to beat the butter for 5 minutes until pale and fluffy. Working in 3 batches, gradually beat in the icing sugar. Add the salt, vanilla and milk; beat for 1 minute. Spread over the top of the cooled cake. It will keep in the fridge for 4 days; cut the remaining strawberries into wedges and arrange on top before serving.

QUICK

ROMESCO

with gnocchi & courgette

Serves 2

Prep 10 mins

Cook 20 mins

Ingredients

2 medium courgettes • 1½ tbsp olive oil • 20g butter (or vegan alternative) • 500g pack Essential Gnocchi • 1 Parmigiano Reggiano (or vegan alternative), to serve

For the romesco

½ x 465g jar Peppadew Roasted Red Peppers, drained • 30g baguette, bloomer or sourdough, lightly toasted • 2 plum tomatoes, quartered • 35g Waitrose Duchy Organic Almonds • 1 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley • 2 tsp sherry vinegar • ½ tsp sweet smoked paprika • 1 pinch cayenne pepper • 1 tsp sea salt flakes • 2 clove/s garlic, roughly chopped • 60ml extra virgin olive oil

Method

Cook’s tip

If you want to speed things up, fry the courgettes and gnocchi in 2 pans simultaneously. Don’t try to fry them all together and crowd the pan, though, or the gnocchi won’t get crispy.

Trim and halve the courgettes lengthways, then cut into 2cm half moons. Heat ½ the oil and ½ the butter (or vegan alternative) in a large frying pan and add the courgettes. Fry over a high heat, until well browned on all sides, for about 10 minutes.

Remove from the pan and set aside. Add the remaining oil and butter to the same pan. Fry the gnocchi for 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden. Meanwhile, make the romesco by placing all the ingredients, apart from the oil, in a food processor or blender. Pulse until finely chopped and season with freshly ground black pepper. With the motor still running, add the olive oil gradually and blend until mostly smooth, but still with some texture. Taste and adjust the seasoning.

When the gnocchi is golden, return the courgettes to the pan. Add 4-6 tbsp of the romesco and season with more black pepper. Heat for 1 minute, until hot throughout. Finely grate some Parmigiano Reggiano (or vegan alternative) over the top and serve.

ESCAPEA Europe

There is no better month to travel than September: it sees a remarkable confluence of happy circumstances around the world. In the northern hemisphere, prices and blood pressures plummet as sizzling days give way to a more temperate existence. In the southern hemisphere, the chills have all but disappeared as mountain passes reopen, frozen lakes thaw and wildflowers bloom.

Sadly, for many travellers, September marks the end of travel season. It's back-to-school, back-to-work, back-to-reality drudgery. But if you can buck the trend, you'll find that September is when those with the savvy and the means pack their bags and embark on adventure.

Barcelona

The busy and beautiful city of Barcelona is one of Spain's most stunning destinations, and September is an ideal time to visit. Summer vacation crowds can make lines long at the top attractions, like La Sagrada Familia, and oftentimes limit availability if you do not book days ahead of time.

The streets in popular areas like the historic Barri Gòtic and Las Ramblas can be so overcrowded in the high season that most of your time is spent just getting from point-A to point-B. Crowd concerns are lessened in September when there are fewer vacationers, so you can enjoy all the attractions and fun things to do in Barcelona with fewer people and cooler temperatures.

Early in September days can still be warm enough to head to the ocean but beaches near Barcelona are not busy at this time of year. Late in the month, you can enjoy La Merce, a festive celebration with daily parades, acrobats, and entertainment.

Athens

The perfect Mediterranean climate with the legendary Greek sunlight, the unique combination of glorious history with modern, urban innovation, the coexistence of great culture with astonishing natural beauty, the high standard hotel accommodation and the wide choice of opportunities for shopping, dining and night life making Athens an all year round city break destination. Visit the absolute number 1 attraction of Athens city, the Acropolis. The mountain is centrally located in the city and you will find the Parthenon here; the temple dedicated to the goddess Athena.

TRAVEL

Berlin

Berlin, the capital city of Germany, is renowned for its exceptional range of landmarks, vibrant cultural scene and way of life that's somehow all go yet relaxed. Germany’s once-divided capital city is now a multicultural melting pot of vibrant music and international cuisine. Home to a vast collection of art and antiquities from across the world, Berlin boasts a rich fusion of creativity and culture. When the sun begins to set, the city welcomes visitors from across the globe with its offering of live music, bustling bars and lively dance clubs.

Fascinating and solemn reminders of Nazi rule remain scattered across the landscape. From Checkpoint Charlie to the Holocaust Museum, Berlin’s historical notes are sobering evidence of the city’s tumultuous past. Berlin comes alive from May to September, when its long, dark winter gives way to a short summer that’s nothing short of addictive. Think beach bars on the Spree river, outdoor dining and imbibing on the Landwehr Canal, and all-day picnics at Tempelhof, Treptower, and Tiergarten parks.

Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik, the southernmost town in Croatia, where Medieval meets Mediterranean. It is probably more popular than Croatia itself. Walk along the ancient walls that surround the Old Town to get a sweeping view of the city— dotted with Romanesque-Gothic monasteries, palaces, and plenty of terracotta rooftops, Dubrovnik is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean. It is the perfect city getaway in September for a combination of old town culture as you explore the beauty of the ancient city walls completed within the 16th century and its well-preserved baroque buildings from St. Blaise Church to Renaissance Sponza Palace and Gothic Rector’s Palace, whilst surrounded by the shimmer of the Adriatic.

Lisbon

Lisbon is a bustling and exciting city that boasts a wide selection of activities and fascinating tourist attractions. It has a welcoming and liberal atmosphere, while still embracing its deep-rooted heritage and extensive history. it can form a cultural trip, a nightlife extravaganza, a family holiday, a relaxed city-break or even as a base for a beach holiday. Seven cinematic hillsides overlooking the Rio Tejo cradle Lisbon's postcard-perfect panorama of cobbled alleyways, ancient ruins and white-domed cathedrals, a captivating scene crafted over centuries. One of Lisbon’s must see attractions is Alfama. Wander downhill through Alfama's steep, narrow, cobblestoned streets and catch a glimpse of the more traditional side of Lisbon before it too is gentrified. Linger in a backstreet cafe along the way and experience some local bonhomie without the tourist gloss. With narrow lanes of residential houses and grocery stores, it has a distinct village atmosphere; you can quickly feel like an intruder if you take a wrong turn into someone's backyard. Early morning is the best time to catch a more traditional scene, when women sell fresh fish from their doorways.
