COVER INTERVIEW 10 •

THEO JAMES

As The Gentlemen hits our screens, straight out of Guy Ritchie’s testosterone-fuelled world, Theo James is securing his status as one of the nation’s most popular – and handsomely sculpted – rising stars.

Needless to say, James isn’t all high cheekbones and olive skin. The actor of The White Lotus fame has led an interesting and varied life, spending time working in the NHS and proving his other talents by singing in a band. One of the standout things about James is his privacy – he has managed to build a hot-shot career in modern TV and Film without being a devoted influencer, drumming up a social media following. Instead, James has opted for the quieter approach. He was married in 2020 and has two children, leading a relatively quiet life – but still managing to bag some of the top roles around.

“you’re expected to give a piece of yourself now. THAT’S OK, BUT YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT THAT IS PART OF A DEAL ONE MUST DO WITH THE DEVIL, AS IT WERE, WHOEVER THE DEVIL MAY BE.”
• 11

James had a very solid career before The White Lotus. His TV breakthrough came with two episodes of A Passionate Woman in 2010. He quickly followed up with the role of Kemal Pamuk, a Turkish diplomat in the first season of Downton Abbey. James’ Greek heritage and olive Mediterranean skin made him an apt piece of casting. One of the things James began to prove at this stage was his mastery of range; playing characters from around the globe in his early career and deftly deploying Turkish, American, Irish and Scottish accents. In 2012 James appeared in the teenage classic, The Inbetweeners Movie, a piece of British popular culture. Film credits then began to stack up, including You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger and Underworld: Awakening.

James cracked America, breaking into several roles including in the crime series, Golden Boy. But his true global breakthrough came with Divergent. He was the freedom fighter Four, opposite Shailene Woodley, in the hugely popular Divergent trilogy, following by an aristocratic vampire in a pair of Underworld movies with Kate Beckinsale.

On TV, he starred in the ITV historical drama Sanditon, based on an unfinished Jane Austen manuscript, and in the 2022 sci-fi series The Time Traveler’s Wife, written by Doctor Who’s Steven Moffat. But his brilliantly creepy performance in The White Lotus has elevated James to another level of fame. “That was a gift,” he says. “It’s not cataclysmic fame, but it has been hugely helpful in terms of opening doors that were harder to open before.”

Licentious business bro Cameron Sullivan may have checked out of “The White Lotus,” but Theo James has no plans to depart his villain era.

adolescence, in a way,” he says. The opportunity has come with The Gentlemen, a follow-up to Ritchie’s 2019 film of the same name. The original starred Matthew McConaughey as an American who has become Britain’s pre-eminent marijuana dealer, largely through finding impoverished aristocrats and creating football-pitch-sized weed farms in vast bunkers under their estates.

The premise for the spin-off Netflix series is the same, but with fresh faces and settings. Early on, James’s character Eddie inherits his father’s 15,000-acre estate only to find that the family’s main source of income is a subterranean marijuana operation run by Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario, from Skins) and her father (Ray Winstone), who is currently relaxing at His Majesty’s pleasure. Vinnie Jones is the estate’s omniscient groundskeeper.

“The central conceit is that old-world Britannia is on its last breath,” says James. “And the crumbling house, this crumbling dukedom, is underpinned by criminality. On the face of it you have the upper class winning. But underneath that, ultimately, they’re controlled by organised crime, which is obviously the other end of the spectrum in terms of class. So, it’s subverting that.”

“I THINK THE IDEA OF making the audience despise you is a different challenge, AND ALSO THE BEST STORIES ARE THE ONES WHICH SKIRT THE BOUNDS OF MORALITY –WHAT IS GOOD AND WHAT IS BAD?”

“You can have a lot of fun with being diabolical,” the British actor says. “I think the idea of making the audience despise you is a different challenge, and also the best stories are the ones which skirt the bounds of morality – what is good and what is bad? Who is selfish and who is selfless? They’re the most interesting narrative tales.”

For James’ first role since frenemy Cam, who isn’t afraid to hit on your wife, James traded sipping spritzes in Italy for “standing in a freezing car park in February outside north London” where James can currently be seen as Eddie Horniman, the incoming Duke of Halstead, in Guy Ritchie’s eight-part Netflix series The Gentlemen. James was 13 when Ritchie’s breakthrough Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels came out in 1998, and working with the director has been something of an ambition. “That film was a cornerstone of my

James himself wasn’t raised in the rarefied world of The Gentlemen. He was born in High Wycombe, the last of five children to Philip, a business consultant who grew up in New Zealand but whose parents were Greek, and Jane, who has Scottish roots and worked for the NHS. He initially directed his performative efforts towards music and was a singer and guitarist throughout his teenage years and beyond. The last of his bands was a rock outfit called Shere Khan, which dispersed in 2012. “I was in some OK bands, some terrible ones,” he recalls. “But I had a decent enough crack at it that I think I made the right choice. Because I would have failed.”

After university – philosophy at Nottingham – James trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Professionally, and personally, this turned out well. He met his now-wife Ruth Kearney, an Irish actor, and the couple have two young children and split their time between north London and Venice Beach in Los Angeles. And work-wise, James graduated and immediately started landing small but visible roles: in Woody Allen’s 2010 film You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger and as a grating club rep in The Inbetweeners Movie in 2011. “you’re still hustling and trying to find your space in the industry. And it continues to be a hustle: any career will have constant ups and downs. The idea of just being constantly upward and upward and upward, I’m not sure that exists.”

COVER INTERVIEW

James’ big break came when he was cast in Divergent, a dystopian sci-fi film based on a bestselling YA novel: released in 2014, it grossed nearly $300m, against its budget of just $85m. He suddenly had legions of young fans. “There is a specific fervour around that type of movie, and it becomes quite intense for a minute and then it cools off,” says James. “But at that time, I wasn’t prepared for it. I was a boy from Aylesbury… The first Comic-Con I did, my brothers came with me. But that was quite a grounding thing anyway, because they were just taking the piss out of me and we made it a bit of a ride. But it’s a difficult place to understand yourself.”

Initially, James responded by turning against anything that wasn’t acting: he found industry parties “frivolous” and didn’t much enjoy doing press. “I’m quite a private person,” he says, “and you’re expected to give a piece of yourself now. That’s OK, but you need to understand that that is part of a deal one must do with the devil, as it were, whoever the devil may be. But that was my defence mechanism for being nervous.”

When the lockdowns ended, there was more demand for TV and film than ever: The White Lotus led into The Gentlemen. But James appears to still be unresolved. He is sometimes listed in the running to be the new James Bond: as auditions go, you could believe his performance in The Gentlemen might

easily catch the eye of Barbara Broccoli, the producer who oversees the 007 film franchise. “I do think there are better people for that job. And, honestly, it would be terrifying: if you do that, there’s no going back. You’re opening Pandora’s box there. You have got to be willing to live a very different life and have a different life for your family. And that would be pretty tricky. Plus, my mates would take the piss out of me. Because they always say, ‘Bondopoulos – the Greek Bond.’”

“It’s flattering, but it’s also every male actor within a certain age,” James answers. “It’s not like it’s two dudes. It’s 50 guys, literally 50 people. So, no… I’d like to play a seminal British figure in a different historical period. I know it’s been done so many times, but I’ve always liked the idea of exploring Henry VIII in a way that isn’t defined by the maniacal sociopath. Because he was that, but then there’s also the journey to become that man. And he shaped Britain and our sense of social understanding of what it is to be British.”

Up next, James will tackle “The Monkey,” which he describes as an “elevated horror film,” inspired by Stephen King’s 1980 short story about a toy monkey who can send someone to their death with the clap of its cymbals. “Oz Perkins, who’s a friend and a great horror director, is directing,” James says, “And I’m kind of excited about it.”

Why am I always tired?

Here are 5 common causes

If you've ever found yourself wondering 'why am I always tired?', you're not alone. It seems everybody is tired — and that’s just part of being a grownup. But even though it’s easy to dismiss your tiredness as just “one of those things”, there comes a point when it’s not. When you're feeling tired all the time it might mean that your body is trying to tell you something.

1. You’re not getting enough shut eye

This is probably the most obvious (and most common) reason for why we feel exhausted. Most adults need 7 hours or more of good quality sleep. But according to Mental Health UK, 1 in 5 aren’t getting enough.

The solution? Get more sleep. First, it’s important to identify the cause – be it stress, too much screen time or poor sleep hygiene – and then you can address it.

2. You’re lacking in energy

Different to feeling tired or sleepy, “fatigue is when you’re seriously lacking energy,” says William Christopher Winter, American sleep researcher and neurologist. “Normal” fatigue gets better when you rest. In most cases, fatigue is your body telling you to slow down, and you should probably listen to it. The solution? Get some rest. Take yourself away from any distractions – and simply rest up.

3. You have an underlying health condition

When Dr Winter sees patients who say they’re tired, he often tries to distinguish whether they’re sleepy or fatigued. “Sleepiness is pretty easy — it’s a defined group of problems,” he says. “But if they’re talking about fatigue, you could make a list a mile long of what could be causing it.” That list includes a deficiency in vitamins B12 or D, multiple sclerosis, type 2 diabetes, and Parkinson’s disease, to name a few.

Other conditions that are associated with fatigue include anaemia, a thyroid issue, or even leukaemia — all of which can make people feel incredibly rundown, says Dr Yvonne Bohn, M.D., an ob/gyn at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica.

The solution? If feeling exhausted comes out of nowhere or doesn’t get better with rest, that’s when you should see a doctor.

4. You’re seriously stressed

Many health conditions can lead to fatigue, but so can being super overwhelmed for months or going through a big life change. Stress can therefore lead to a state of hyperarousal, where your brain and body are more alert than normal.

The solution? “Sometimes it’s possible to tackle stress by resolving the source of stress – for example, speaking to your manager about your workload,” says Dr Bostock. In other cases, it’s not always possible to avoid the source of stress. “What you can do though, is to learn tools to switch off the cortisol tap,” she assures, like box breathing, sleep journaling or yoga.

5. You’re depressed

“My patients definitely talk about being tired,” Dr Bohn says. When she hears that, she starts asking questions to try to figure out what might be behind it. If there doesn’t seem to be lifestyle factors behind it (like caring for a new baby or training for a marathon), she’ll typically do a blood workup to try to figure out what’s going on. Mental health conditions, including depression, can also make people feel fatigued. But as Dr Bohn points out, they can’t be detected with a blood test.

Symptoms of depression can be very different from person to person. But, as a general rule (according to the NHS), if you are depressed you tend to feel hopeless, sad and lacking interest in things that used to make you feel happy. It’s worth noting that there are several physical symptoms too, including loss of energy and disturbed sleep.

The solution? Depression can be treated with talking therapies and/or medication. If you think the reason you’re wondering ‘why am I so tired?’ is due to depression, speak to your GP who can get you the support and help that you need.

THE QUEEN OF TIKTOK: GK BARRY

From TikTok sensation to a sell out tour, we caught up with GK Barry on her rise to stardom!

Congratulations on completing your Saving Grace Tour! What inspired you to want to begin the tour and how does it feel now that you have completed this?

So, I did one tour last year, but it was very small, and I thought this year we need to go bigger, we need to go better. It’s always nice putting faces to people that listen to the pod, because I see how many listens it gets, but it’s not the same as when you see people watching it, so I thought let’s see the people that are watching it, involve them and give them a really good show. It’s almost like a thank you and a give back to the people.

Can you share with us your most memorable moment from the tour?

I would say, Katie Price singing ‘I’ve Got You’, that was sensational, I felt like I was in a fever dream. Also, we had a section where it was blind dates so I got 3 people from the crowd to come up and they blind dated with one of my magic Michaels; them doing their secret talents would get the crowd so riled up it was so good.

Can you tell us about a challenging moment during your career or from the tour that you faced and how you overcame it?

One thing I’ve learnt, is that in the bigger venues, it’s harder to hear the audience and no one tells you that. I don’t know if it’s aerodynamics but when I went out for my first show in Nottingham, I couldn’t really hear the audience and I was like ‘omg they hate it, they absolutely despise what I’m doing’. Also, on a few of the shows we had a few issues with mics so I sort of had to adlib it but we actually, thankfully didn’t have too many hiccups.

Who has been your favourite celebrity to interview, and why?

Hmm, I think Chloe Ferry was probably my favourite. Purely because, she was so terrified before she went out, she was like ‘I don’t do this I’m so scared, what if I don’t know the answers to your questions’ and then I started panicking thinking ‘omg what if she doesn’t know the answers’, but she went out on that stage and absolutely smashed it. She was so fun, The crowd loved her, so I feel like she was a good one because she really surprised me.

“I think it was probably being relatable that got me the following, BECAUSE AT THE TIME THERE WASN’T MANY PEOPLE JUST SAYING IT HOW IT IS, OR NOT BEING EMBARRASSED BY THINGS THAT EVERYONE DOES”

Your Saving Grace podcast is a huge success! Who would be your dream guest to interview and why?

Paris Hilton. Whatever she needs, she can get. Honestly that would just be an iconic one because I grew up watching The Simple Life, I think it would just be great.

How do you choose the celebrities you want to interview on the podcast, and what factors influence that decision?

I think it all depends on who’s relevant at the time, have they just been on a show, or has something come out about them recently, but also, would I vibe with them, do I know much about them? A lot of my guests I think I’d get on really well with them and I think people would enjoy what we could speak about and also, if there even is anything to speak about! Some people I would love to get on, but I know I’d have nothing to speak about!

You began your journey on TikTok which you now have over 5 million followers on, what do you believe made this so successful for you and how do you continue to engage with your followers?

I think it was probably being relatable that got me the following, because at the time there wasn’t many people just saying it how it is, or not being embarrassed by things that everyone does, or telling their embarrassing moments, so I think that’s what got me quite noticed. Also maybe just sort of staying the same level too, like I don’t really think I’ve changed my attitude with however much I’ve gained followers.

How did it feel to interview on the red carpet at one of the world’s biggest award shows, The Brits?

Absolutely MENTAL! I did have imposter syndrome, I will be honest; I was like why am I here? But, it was just mental to be able to speak to people that I listen too, I see, and they were all really nice. I don’t think I met one person that made me feel little, so yeah, it was so much fun!

Can you tell us a little bit about your upcoming partnership with Teenage Cancer Trust, and why this charity is important to you?

At the Royal Albert Hall they do performances for Teenage Cancer Trust, and before the performance I get to meet like a group of teenagers that have been through cancer treatment, or that are going through cancer treatment just sort of chat with them, they can ask me questions; basically just like a little chin wag but I think it’s really important because your teenage years are stressful anyway, you’ve got all these pressures but then to also go through cancer treatment on top of that… I can’t even imagine, so it’s nice to be able to give back and make them feel a bit happier in their day. I’m even so happy to even be asked! I said on the interview are you sure? Do they even know me? So yeah, its amazing to even be offered the opportunity.

What advice would you give to aspiring presenters or anyone that wanted to start their own podcast?

I think fake the confidence, fake it till you make it. Just sort of act like you know you’re supposed to be there. And for a podcast, I don’t know if this is good advice but you should always tell your most embarrassing stories, get the clicks in, use TikTok for your clips to promote it and just not care about what people think! I think if I had the mindset of ‘omg what are people going to think about what I’m saying’ I don’t think I would be in the position that I’m in.

What’s next for Gk Barry after the success of your tour and your Brit Awards experience?

Ooo, this year’s mission is to be on TV! I won’t be on strictly, but I want to move into that side of things hopefully. I’m also hoping to do another tour this year as well and just put myself out there more!

Keeping Up With Katerina

Keeping up with all things life, love, family, kids and keeping it together!

@keepingupwithkaterina @keepingupwithmyclassroom

Happy April everyone! Some of you might be reading this with a cold cuppa in hand, as yes, the Easter break is upon us. Below I have listed some fun, at home, Easter activities. Perfect for rainy days in, something to do as a family, or even for some egg-citing play dates! (Sorry couldn’t help myself).

1. Easter movie marathon

Get the popcorn and leftover Easter eggs out and snuggle up on the sofa with a blanket for an Easter movie marathon. From classics like “Hop” and “Peter Rabbit” to family favourites like “The Easter Bunny Adventure,” between Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video, there’s something for everyone! If you’re Christian, you can introduce movies about the life of Jesus or snippets of animations from the gospel that will help them to understand why we actually celebrate Easter!

2. A great Easter bake off!

Spend a day in the kitchen baking delicious Easter-themed treats like hot cross buns, bunny-shaped cookies, or if you’re like me and not exactly in the running for star baker, you cannot go wrong with chocolate Rice Krispie nests filled with mini eggs! Voila! If you’re Greek, like me, and look forward to Flaouna season, why not spend the 2 weeks off getting some practice in before Greek Easter, you can’t go wrong with extra Flaounes for a month now can you? (Ps if you’ve never tried a Flaouna before, head down to a Greek bakery and prepare to have your mind and tastebuds blown!)

3. Easter bonnet bonanza

I’ve never actually made an Easter bonnet with Rico before, but this is definitely something I will be trying this year. There are so many shops like Poundland, Home Bargains and B&M that won’t break the bank but have some lovely decorative bits that will help create a banging bonnet! Why not make it competitive and see who at home can make the best bonnet? Followed by a fashion show of course!

4. Planting some new flowers/plants

Embrace the spirit of spring by planting seeds or bulbs in the garden and watch them grow and bloom together as a family, just like the new life of Easter! If you don’t have a garden, or don’t want your kids digging holes, B&Q, Amazon, eBay or your local garden centres all have cheap pots, compost and seeds for you to plant in a pot and keep a watch over them inside!

Tag me in all of your Easter crafts! Wishing you and your families a lovely, wholesome, happy and healthy Easter!

Until next time lovelies

Oh So Suppliers is a new supplier directory for Luxury Event Planning, we run a trusted and vetted supplier list, only working with those who meet our high standards. OSS has been created by Oh So Delicious Owner Amy Valentine, who works regularly with big corporate names, celebrities and has most recently won Confectionery Company of the Year 2024.

We launched OSS with our favourite suppliers two months ago with the Event People who are our "go to" suppliers when we need something for one of our clients and have now opened it for applications from Event Suppliers from all over the UK. We thought it would be very useful to have them all stored in one place for others to be able to do the same when looking at planning events.

As a supplier group we wanted to showcase the amazing work we can create, by teaming up together, we have created a Luxury Children's Party. We brought in some of our suppliers who wanted to be onboard, including a stunning Venue, created the mood boards/planning deck and set to work to create our favourite version of a Cinderella Party.

Cinderella herself even turned up!

We hope you enjoy reading about our suppliers and our Dreamy Cinderella Shoot.

EDUCATION

“I saw how Cellfield achieved outstanding results with students who experienced language difficulties – including dyslexia – and immediately saw how Cellfield’s programme could help my current students deal with their literacy, reading and reading comprehension issues.”

Shaaron – Centre Director, Enfield

Cellfield is a MUST to improve your child’s reading difficulties.

What is Cellfield?

Cellfield is a world-first brain plasticity programme which directly addresses inefficient neural wiring in the brain, to bring about permanent and sustainable improvement in reading and language processing. Cellfield clients can achieve average gains of 2 years in reading age after just 2 weeks - and these gains continue over time. Cellfield works for both adults and children. ‘’Cellfield is life changing.”

The Cellfield programme costs less than a year’s tuition. “We were exhibiting at the Dyslexia show (Birmingham NEC) on the 15th & 16th March this year. It was wonderful to see how views about dyslexia have changed positively in my time as an educator; dyslexia often runs in families and it is beyond wonderful to see how experiences with dyslexia are becoming more and more positive as we learn more about it.”

HOW I’VE TRAINED MY BRAIN

“A constant state of happiness can’t be your end goal. It’s not possible. And when you’re not happy, you think you’ve failed.”

It gets like that sometimes. The up’s and down’s of the human psyche… but I’m not a psychologist. Happy April you wonderful bunch. Spring has sprung. It’s always lovely to wake up in the morning to the sun instead of dark, cold and rain, it does something to you, doesn’t it? The flowers are beginning to bloom, you’re walking along humming and smiling and then the impending doom sets in that you need to be beach body ready in 2 months and you’re not feeling yourself. Or is that just me?

Do you ever get those periods in your life where you feel hideous, your hair doesn’t want to work with you, you feel gross, and you are metaphorically tripping over everything in your path? Well, this is the almighty funk I’m in now.

I write these columns for two reasons. The first in the hope that these resonate with at least one of you and you feel like you have a sister in arms braving the world in the same way you are. The second reason is that it’s my therapy. I write down my feelings, almost like a journal to the masses. If it’s a feeling of impending doom, I write about it, then throw it away, as if it’s a tangible way to help those feelings exit my psyche. If its something positive, I often keep the page and refer back to remind myself, always, that sadness or the proverbial funk, is just a fleeting emotion.

Now I understand there are major nuances to this, with mental health, depression and anxiety all clinical conditions that aren’t ‘just a funk’ and for those of you who do suffer with any of these conditions, this needn’t apply to you, however; know that we see you, we love you, and we support you. But no, I’m not witling down your experiences to a funk. This is just me.

If I’m honest, I haven’t felt right since February, actually, I haven’t felt right since I wrote last month’s column about the stigma of being single in your thirties. That one cut me deeper than I thought. But I do think it’s an amalgamation of so many things happening at once.

Work is super busy and has entirely taken over my world, so much so my passion project of the Big Mouth podcast has had to take a back seat for the time being. I’ve barely been going to the gym, so my dreams of becoming hot body Soph by

summer is just that, a dream. My food choices are poor, I’m barely cooking because I’m so tired. All of these elements of my life are culminating in me feeling like a complete failure. I am inconsistent in all aspects. I am losing control.

I can see that I am slowly sinking into a hollow pit of despair, I used to wake up and try and perk myself up but as the days go on, I’d much prefer to stay in bed all day playing Monopoly Go. One duvet day is perfectly acceptable but wishing away precious days in bed sounds like a problem. But I know, it’s a short term problem and I just need to ride the wave. How do I know that? You ask. Because I know my triggers. I know how I begin to feel when I’m overwhelmed. I know what I need to do depending on the gradient of misery. Really, it’s not misery at all. It’s a swish of papers, to-do lists, deadlines and exhaustion that has me hiding under the duvet. Life will always have peaks and troughs. The problem with being a selfproclaimed strong woman, is that you can’t always be happy, strength isn’t always happiness. Strength is finding your way through.

A constant state of happiness can’t be your end goal. It’s not possible. And when you’re not happy, you think you’ve failed. And when you’re a perfectionist like me, the idea of failing at happiness is counterintuitive. “How can something I can control, fail? I’m a failure”

Rather than focussing on happiness, try and focus on minimising the problems and handle them as they come, because they will always come. Your end goal should be; I fell, I cried, I got up, I brushed myself off. This, my friends, is emotional intelligence. Welcome to boss level adulting.

Now I know it’s easier said than done, and I guess I am testament to the fact that I had zero emotional intelligence, and now, at least, I have some. So, what is emotional intelligence? To quote Helpguide.org, emotional intelligence is the ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict. Sounds like a lot of ways to fail right? I know, I’ve been there. But it’s

42 •

back to the old adage of ‘Are you book smart, or street smart?’ Your IQ will get you far in life, academically, you could be a genius but if you don’t have the EQ (emotional quotient) to deal with people and the challenges they bring, you will only get so far.

Emotional intelligence will help you build better relationships, personally and professionally by simply becoming attuned to feelings and emotions and understanding yourself and others. When you can begin to understand a situation from someone else’s point of view, not just your own, you become balanced. Often, we can get caught up in the weeds of our own feelings and how something has made us feel, we forget the other person or, we fail to identify what got us, and them, to that point in the first place.

“When you can begin to understand A SITUATION FROM SOMEONE ELSE’S POINT OF VIEW, NOT JUST YOUR OWN, you become balanced.”

Let’s touch on some of attributes of emotional intelligence (see I can be educational sometimes, helpful even). Selfmanagement and self-awareness: taking responsibility for your own actions and well-being as well as acknowledging how your emotions affect your thoughts and behaviours. I used to act irrationally and impulsively. I would fly off the handle if I felt triggered. I would cry, my blood would boil. I would argue and become deeply saddened as a response to criticism. I was unable to adapt to change, I would not be able to handle stress and would lack all self-motivation to try and snap out of that mindset. I spent a lot of time in ruts, and I would rely on someone else to pull me out of it.

My projection of my own insecurities made me the way I was. When I finally decided to focus on becoming the type of person I would want to be around, I pulled away from my trauma responses, after realising that’s exactly what they were, and

got back to being me… a good, kind hearted person with compassion and empathy for others. This one took some work but created such a positive outcome. You are not always the person you project onto other people.

Social awareness and relationship management: picking up on someone else’s emotions is a powerful level of emotional intelligence. It builds rapport and strengthens relationships and by proxy, improves communication. To understand the emotions of others and to be able to guide them and comfort them through pain and hurt or relate to them in joy and laughter is a skill. I’ve always had a knack for getting people to open about themselves very early on in a relationship because of an ability to make people feel comfortable and safe, something I never really had so have worked to give to others. I have also picked up on vibes and taken myself out of situations which may have been compromising. Whether that’s relationships, friendships or work environments. Relying more on making positive, calculated actions as opposed to irrational ones.

Being able to read a person, and a room and even positively change the dynamic of a group of people is a huge green flag of emotional intelligence. Be the light you want to see in the world.

As you spend more time understanding your feelings, you begin to develop better coping mechanisms to navigate more difficult times in your life. Sometimes it works better than others. But eventually, we will. We always do.

Sadness is a fleeting emotion.

Big Mouth xoxo

UPGRADING YOUR PHONE GAME

We caught up with Stav at CNS to discuss phone solutions, enhanced support and all the advantages you could be missing out on.

How does CNS distinguish itself from other phone service providers in terms of benefits for my business?

Although CNS has only been established for three years, our team members each have a minimum of 10 years’ experience, so our industry knowledge will be a huge benefit to your business. With tailor-made solutions and personal customer service, our team are always on hand to look after your business as if it were our own.

What is the timeframe for installation and setup of your services in my office, and how streamlined is the process?

The time frame for installation can vary depending on the product we are providing. For mobile connections, we aim to provide all products (SIMS or phones) for our customers within 48 hours. This is however dependent on stock levels from the network, but if we ever have any issues getting any devices, we will look to get the supply from one of the many distributors with whom we work.

With new broadband installs, or the porting of landline numbers, we aim to have the service up and running within 10 days from signature, supplier dependent.

Could you describe the level of service and support I can anticipate receiving throughout the month?

From something as simple as having a team of experts at the end of the phone, through to proactive account management and service monitoring, CNS deliver an experience that allows you to forget about your communication set up, and focus on what you need to do for the betterment of your business.

With technology being so important in day-to-day of business, we will always try our hardest to keep our customers up and running on their phones and internet.

Are early upgrades offered as part of your service package?

Early upgrades are available for our customers. Any of our existing customers on EE/O2/Vodafone will have the option of an upgrade 6 months before the end of their contract. With broadband, we can also offer an early upgrade option, if, for instance, a new faster connection is available for a customer’s site, we will offer the customer the option to upgrade early to give them the best possible experience.

In comparison to directly sourcing our phone services, what unique advantages does your company bring to the table for businesses?

The difference in a customer sourcing their own phone services lies primarily in the management of the account. If you were to deal directly with the provider and have any issues or questions, you would have to contact the supplier or network themselves, which can often be a painful experience. Also, when dealing with the network directly if you have any issues, the likelihood of getting a same day fix is 10%. With CNS this would be around 80%.

Can you provide examples of customisable features tailored to businesses that CNS offers?

Customisable features that we would be able to provide are cost centre billing options for different companies under the same umbrella. We are also be able to tailor a customer’s auto attendant with their working hours and also arrange out of hours call diverts.

How does CNS ensure the security and reliability of its phone services, particularly concerning sensitive business communications?

With security on mobile, and customers working in industries such as the financial sector, we are able to configure each device with a MDM management service, to ensure all data on the device is secure and can be easily wiped if the device is lost or stolen. Regarding internet connections, we use a monitoring tool to monitor and manage connectivity services through ourselves. This is all managed and serviced in-house.

Could you outline the scalability options available for our business as it grows, and how easily can we adjust our service plans accordingly?

As customer business grows, we will make changes to a customer’s plan on the same day. For example, if you have a field agent who is out on the road for the majority of their work, we are able to make changes to their price plans with immediate effect, giving each user an allowance depending on their needs. If you have a new starter for the business, we can provide a new phone/SIM within 48 hours of the order.

What measures does CNS have in place for disaster recovery and continuity of service in case of unexpected outages or emergencies?

We provide our customers with failover connectivity, meaning if any of the broadband services go down, a SIM or back-up broadband kicks into place, ensuring customers are always connected.

With the option of having your phone system on an app based programme, if one of your broadband or landlines goes down, there will always be an alternative solution the keep them going.

How does CNS stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends to continually enhance its services and offerings for businesses?

As the telecoms industry is always evolving, we have monthly webinars with our suppliers, to stay up to date with the latest technology and informed on all the new price plans/phones that are released. We use our industry knowledge to tailor a package for our customers which will benefit them not just for the now, but also preparing them for the future.

MONEY MOVES

This Morning’s money making expert, Dan Hatfield offers his tips and tricks to turning your Vinted account into a profitable side hustle.

As a nation we send 350,000 tonnes of unwanted clothes to landfill each year, worth a staggering £12 billion. But these clothes could be put to much better use and make you a pretty penny whilst helping the environment.

With 65 million registered users, Vinted is a titan in the pre-loved clothing market. What I also love, is that it is simple to use, and even better, it’s a free platform for you to sell on as buyers pay an additional 3% fee to the platform, on top of the purchase price(s) – so you don’t have to sacrifice any of your profit.

Regardless of your financial situation, our homes are full of clothes which are easily accessible and could be making you instant cash. So, how can you turbo charge your chance to earn £500 from your unwanted clothes?

My top tip might sound counterintuitive, but I assure you, it will help you make more money – don’t sell everything on vinted!

That’s right, you could lose hundreds of pounds if you put your higher value or vintage items on this site. There are specialist sites like Vestiaire Collective which are renowned for selling secondhand designer items and plenty of other sites for specific items like your wedding dress, which can demand a higher price tag.

cashflow. And if your aim is to make as much as possible, concentrate on quality - whilst most clothes will sell for something, condition is king to making the most cash. Finally, don’t put your own prejudice when sorting through what to sell. Just because you don’t think it’s in fashion anymore doesn’t mean that someone else will agree with you – fashion is subjective so one person’s trash can be another person’s treasure.

2. Picture Perfect

To get the most cash for your clothes you’ll need to market them with great pictures. Believe me when I tell you that taking pictures of your unwanted clothes is serious business, I don’t want to see any pictures of clothes hanging precariously from your wardrobe door. To make the most money, you need to sell the dream –make your clothes stand out from the (very) crowded market, they need to look professional, attainable, and desirable whilst popping on the platform. The key is not to overcomplicate the shot, follow my easy guide on creating the best shots of clothes below… lights, camera, action:

“HOW CAN YOU TURBO CHARGE YOUR chance to earn £500 FROM YOUR UNWANTED CLOTHES?”

Vinted is a tremendous marketplace for your cheap to mid-range items, you can of course try and sell your designer garments on here, but I don’t believe you’ll achieve as high as a price that you can get on specialist platforms. To maximise your money-making potential, follow my top tips which will help you generate a lovely income from your unwanted clothes:

1. Conduct a clothes audit

Be honest with me, could you tell me every item of clothing you have? I doubt it, I couldn’t. So, let’s get familiar with our wardrobes. What I would like you to do is get all the clothes you own and lay them out. Then, look at each individual item and honestly scrutinise whether you wear it often or hardly ever? I use my social media account as a good reference point to identify what I do and do not wear.

Be strict on yourself when conducting your clothes audit, a pretty top hanging unused in your wardrobe isn’t doing anything to help your

• Lighting can make or break a picture and whilst you can invest in ring lights or fancy LED panels, I’m here to teach you how to make money not spend it. Whilst being sustainable why don’t we use mother nature to help us with our photos – I personally think everything looks better in natural light. So, find a spot outside where you can take all the pictures of every item of clothing you want to sell – using the same location will build a visual brand which will help buyers come back to you time and time again. To get what I call is the ‘good light’, I advise taking your shots between 8-10am.

• Don’t be fussy with your background – I find a neutral background is best and less distracting from the item(s) you’re trying to highlight.

• You can of course use a fancy camera if you have one, but most smart phones have HD/4K capabilities which is more than enough to capture the perfect shot.

• Please present your clothes like perfection. Iron out any creases and remove any lint. Helping them look their best will guarantee you a much quicker sale.

• A great way to showcase clothes is by taking a picture of them on. So, either shoot yourself or a friend wearing them. You can hang them on a hanger if you prefer, just make sure it captures the item in full.

50 • INTERVIEW

3. Words count

Pictures might say a thousand words but the description you give an item is equally as important. The more information you can put on the site, the sooner it will be making you money. Don’t leave any room for questions, detail the type of fabric of the item, the colour, size, key measurements, number of pockets/zips, whether it’s formal or everyday etc. All these details avoid any laborious back and forth correspondence to deliver you a faster sale. And always be honest and upfront about the description otherwise you may spend more time dealing with returns or bad reviews.

4. Be Responsive

Even if you have given all the details imaginable, some people will still have questions, so make sure you reply in a quick and polite manner. I don’t want you glued to your phone, and you can always highlight on your profile the hours you’re able to reply if you need to be strict but in a digital world, consumers expect answers quickly, so bear this in mind so you don’t lose any potential customers.

5. The Price Is Right

Price an item too high and you will price yourself out of the market, too low and people will think your clothing is sub-standard. Researching what items like yours have sold for previously will help you to hit that sale price sweet spot. I often look on eBay in the sold section so that I know what prices are currently achieving. I also search on Vinted for similar items and then slightly shave off a small amount to be more competitive. To start you will want to sell lots quickly, which will build your profile and reviews, ultimately enabling you to sell more in the future when you’re known as a trustworthy seller. Leave wiggle room for haggling. There’s a “make an offer” button that allows buyers to offer up to 40% off the price you are asking for.

6. Entice Your Customers

On the site potential buyers can ‘like’ your garments which you can use as an opportunity to reply to them. Maybe offer them a discount directly to see if that can secure you a deal or reduce the price which will alert all the people watching the item and could provide a sale. Don’t forget that we all love a discount and the bargaining culture of Vinted means people will try and ask for them, so pre-empt them and offer one first, this tactic often bags a quicker sale.

7. Be Seasonal

You can make up to 50% more selling within the right season – a big winter coat isn’t going to demand a high price tag in the summer just as shorts won’t fly off your page in December. So be aware of the seasons and market your clothes accordingly.

8. Put Your Clothes in the Spotlight

To help secure sales, there is a handy feature called ‘Wardrobe Spotlight’ for a fee (£6.95). It allows you to boost your item’s visibility for one week. It can help secure sales but always make sure any outlay is still going to return you a profit. Sometimes spending a little can help you earn a lot.

9. Box Clever

Don’t waste your hard-earned cash of fancy packaging, instead start to save all the jiffy bags and boxes you receive or ask friends and families for theirs. Buying these yourself can seriously dent your profit margin.

We’re not reinventing the wheel here; we all know how to sell on these platforms, but I want you to use my tips to help you achieve greater sales success and put more pounds in your pocket. Small changes to your sales technique on Vinted can make a big difference to your bank balance. Making money is liberating and fun but these sites are competitive so by following my advice, you’ll position yourself and your clothes in the best light to make the most money. I can’t wait to see how you all succeed!

BAKED DOUGHNUTS with cardamom & apricot

Oven-baked doughnuts are delicious and a lot less hassle to make than traditional ones. The dough’s cardamom flavouring pairs perfectly with the cinnamon dusting and the apricot filling compliments both.

Makes 16

Prep 40 mins

Cook 10 mins

Ingredients

½ tbsp cardamom pods, split, seeds finely crushed in a pestle and mortar • 500g strong white bread flour, plus extra for kneading and shaping • 50g unsalted butter, cold, cut into dice • 1 tsp salt • 2 tsp easy-bake yeast • 200g caster sugar • 1 tbsp vanilla extract • 250ml semi-skimmed milk, warm • A little oil, for greasing • ½ tsp ground cinnamon • 50g icing sugar, sifted • 150g Bonne Maman Apricot Conserve, any large pieces of fruit chopped • 1 disposable piping bag (or fit a reusable piping bag with a 1cm plain nozzle)

Method

Cook’s tip

Like traditional doughnuts, these are best served freshly cooked. You can get ahead by mixing and kneading the dough the day before and chilling overnight in the fridge, ready for shaping, proving and baking.

If you prefer a strong cardamom flavour, use the seeds from 1 tbsp pods. The strength can vary depending on how old your pot of cardamom is.

Tip the cardamom into a large bowl with the flour and butter. Rub together until no diced butter is visible. Stir in the salt, yeast, 75g sugar, the vanilla and milk. Using a round bladed knife, mix the ingredients to a soft but not sticky dough. Add a dash more milk if the mixture is dry and crumbly.

Tip the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. (Or knead in a freestanding mixer with dough hook attachment for 5 minutes). Transfer to a lightly oiled large bowl, cover with a clean damp tea towel and leave to rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour 30 minutes.

Line 2 baking sheets with baking parchment. Tip the dough onto a lightly floured surface, pat into a ball, then cut into 16 even-sized wedges. Shape each into a ball and space apart on the baking sheets. Cover and leave to rise in a warm place until again doubled in size. While proving, preheat the oven to 190oC, gas mark 5.

Bake the doughnuts for 10-12 minutes until risen and pale golden. While baking, combine the remaining caster sugar with the cinnamon on a plate, ready for rolling. Beat the icing sugar in a small bowl with 1 tbsp cold water to make a thin glaze. Put the conserve in the piping bag and snip off 1cm from the tip (or use the reusable bag and nozzle).

When cool enough to handle, push a hole through to the centre of each doughnut with the handle end of a teaspoon. Squeeze a little conserve from the bag into the centre of each doughnut. Using a pastry brush, brush the doughnuts with the glaze and roll them in the cinnamon sugar.

Tomato, prawn & coconut CURRY

The base of this fragrant curry can be made in advance, chilled or frozen, then reheated when you’re ready to add the prawns. It’s a great standby when you don’t have time to cook.

Serves 4

Prep 10 mins

Cook 30 mins

Ingredients

1½ tbsp vegetable or sunflower oil • 400g echalion shallots, halved lengthways and finely sliced • 270g pack Waitrose Cherry Vine Tomatoes, halved • 175g jar Keralan Style Spice Paste • 400ml Essential Coconut Milk • 2 x 165g packs Essential Raw King Prawns • ½ Essential Lime, juice • Coriander leaves and steamed rice, to serve

Cook’s tip

Swap the prawns for cubes of white fish or chicken breast, adjusting the cooking times accordingly.

Method

Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large nonstick saucepan over a medium-high heat. Add the shallots and a pinch of salt; fry for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft. Scoop out ½ of the shallots and set aside. Fry the remaining shallots for another 6-8 minutes, stirring regularly, until deep golden and crispy. Scoop out of the pan and set aside.

Return the pan to a medium heat with the remaining ½ tbsp oil, the tomatoes and softened shallots (the crispy shallots will be used to garnish); fry for another 1-2 minutes. Add the spice paste and cook, stirring, for another 2-3 minutes. Add all but 2 tbsp of the coconut milk and stir together. Simmer gently for 5 minutes.

Add the prawns and simmer for a final 3-4 minutes or until the prawns are pink, opaque and cooked through. Take off the heat and stir in the lime juice. Swirl through the reserved coconut milk and scatter with the crispy shallots. Serve with steamed rice, scattered with coriander leaves.

Cheesy spinach NAAN BITES

Ready in just 25 minutes, these addictive little naan bites are vegetarian-friendly and a guaranteed winner alongside an ice-cold beer.

Serves 6

Prep 15 mins

Cook 10 mins

Ingredients

35g unsalted butter • 2 clove/s garlic, finely chopped • 2 tsp cumin seeds • 1 pinch chilli flakes (optional) • 260g pack Essential Spinach • 2 Flame-Baked Plain Naan Breads • 3 tbsp mango chutney (we like Geeta’s Premiums Mango Chutney), plus extra to dip • 100g Grated Cheddar & Mozzarella

Cook’s tip Simple Swap

Lime or aubergine pickle work brilliantly here in place of the chutney.

Method

Heat the butter in a large frying pan over a medium-high heat and add the garlic, cumin seeds and chilli flakes, if using. Cook for about 1-2 minutes until golden and fragrant, then stir in the spinach and cook for 3-4 minutes until wilted and most of the liquid has evaporated. Transfer the spinach to a sieve set over a bowl, squeeze out any excess water, then set aside.

Preheat the grill to high. Spread the naan breads with the mango chutney, then cut into bitesized triangles (you want at least 18). Pile a mound of spinach onto each, then scatter over the cheese.

Put the naan bites close to the top of the oven and grill for 1-2 minutes until the cheese has melted and is just turning golden. Serve with extra mango chutney for dipping, if liked.

Lemon ICED BUNS

These soft buns by Martha Collison are reminiscent of childhood birthday parties, with a zingy citrus twist. Be generous with the sticky icing.

Makes 12

Prep 40 mins

Cook 15 mins

Ingredients

225ml milk • 25g unsalted butter • 1 unwaxed lemon, zest and juice • 250g strong white bread flour • 250g plain flour • 50g caster sugar • 1 tsp salt • 7g sachet fast action yeast • 1 British Blacktail Large Free Range Egg, beaten • 150g icing sugar

Method

Pour the milk into a small saucepan and add the butter. Heat on low until the butter has melted, then remove from the heat, stir in ½ the lemon zest and allow to cool slightly.

Place the flours, caster sugar, salt and yeast into a large bowl, or the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook. Gradually add ¾ of the milk mixture, stirring until a rough dough forms, then add the beaten egg and mix until combined. Add the remaining milk mixture until you have a soft dough (you might not need to add all the milk).

Tip the dough onto a lightly oiled surface and knead for around 10 minutes – it should be smooth and elastic – or use the stand mixer to knead it on low speed for 5-6 minutes. Put the dough into an oiled bowl, cover and leave to rise for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.

When the dough has risen, tip out onto a lightly oiled surface and knead a couple of times to knock out any irregular air bubbles. Divide the dough into 12 even-sized pieces and shape each into a rectangular roll, about 10cm long. Place the buns onto a parchment-lined baking tray, leaving around 1cm between each. You want them to touch each other as they bake. Cover the tray with oiled clingfilm and leave to rise for 1 hour, or until noticeably bigger in size. Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. Bake the risen buns for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. Allow to cool completely before icing.

To make the icing, mix the icing sugar with enough lemon juice to form a thick, spreadable paste. Spread the icing over the top of the buns, then sprinkle with lemon zest. Serve on the day they are made.

SEMLOR

( Scandi-style lent buns )

Martha Collison’s cardamom-spiced buns are filled with sticky marzipan paste and whipped cream. They were created in Scandinavia to be enjoyed on Shrove Tuesday and throughout Lent.

Makes 12 buns

Prep 40 mins

Cook 15 mins

Ingredients

250ml milk • 75g butter, cubed • 500g strong white bread flour • 1 tsp fine salt • 75g caster sugar • 1 tsp ground cardamom (from the seeds of 7-8 pods, crushed) • 7g fast action yeast • 2 British Blacktail Free Range Medium Eggs • For the filling • 200g marzipan • 2 tbsp whole milk • 450ml double cream • Icing sugar, to dust

Method

Heat the milk and butter in a small saucepan over a low heat until the butter melts, then set aside. Put the flour into a large bowl, or the bowl of a stand mixer, and add the salt, caster sugar and cardamom on one side and the yeast on the other.

When the milk mixture is cool enough to touch, beat in 1 of the eggs. Slowly pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture, mixing continuously until a rough dough forms. Knead for 5-10 minutes on a lightly oiled surface, or use the dough hook attachment on the mixer, until smooth and stretchy. Put the dough into a lightly oiled bowl, cover and leave to rise for 1-3 hours until doubled in size.

When risen, fold the dough in on itself a few times in the bowl, then divide into 12 even pieces. Shape each into a ball and arrange on 2 parchment-lined baking trays, leaving room for each to spread. Cover with a clean tea towel and leave to rise again for 45-60 minutes, or until noticeably larger.

While the buns are proving, preheat the oven to 220°C, gas mark 7. Beat the remaining egg in a small bowl, then brush over the risen buns using a pastry brush. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until golden brown all over.

Remove the buns from the oven and cover with a slightly damp clean tea towel to stop a hard crust forming. Leave to cool completely. Using a serrated knife, cut the top off each bun and scoop out the centre, placing the middles into a small bowl.

Tear the centres into breadcrumbs and grate the marzipan into the bowl, then add the milk and stir until a thick paste forms. You shouldn’t see any large pieces of marzipan. Spoon the marzipan paste back into the centres of the buns, filling each cavity to the top.

Whip the cream into soft peaks, then spoon into a piping bag with a star nozzle. Pipe a swirl on top of each bun, top with the lid and dust with icing sugar, then serve.

MAJESTIC MOROCCO

Morocco is a country of dazzling diversity, from its ancient cities and craggy mountain ranges to rolling deserts and deserted beaches.

One day you could be scaling Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak; the next, strolling through the twisting blue alleyways of Chefchaouen, or savouring street food in the medieval medina of Fez.

When you visit Morocco in April, you can expect warm days and cool evenings in most locations around the country. The Sahara Desert can get very hot during the day but most other places are quite comfortable as you explore one beautiful location after another.

Spend time on the Mediterranean or Atlantic coastline, enjoying bright sunshine and balmy breezes while seeing the sights and eating fresh seafood.
