EDITION INQUIRY What is your main concern about health and ethics?

EDITION INQUIRY

Dr. Ana Luisa Caballero Elvira Along the history we have seen different atrocities made to the humanity in favor of the medical science and health, nevertheless, it is not different what we are living at the present time in countries considered of the third world, where the poverty abounds, where the medical attention is expensive, or they do not have the form to accede to her. The population has to look for different options to have medical attention, that is why, during the development of new drugs, where free invitation is made to participate in the protocols, many times the vulnerable population can or has come to lie in their medical history putting in danger their life and the integrity of the doctor. It is thanks to the independent Ethics Committees, which have been given greater autonomy and have opened up new possibilities for analyzing this type of situation, that we can go to the site in question to supervise the processes, without forgetting that in the informed consents patients are reiterated that they can speak to us if they have any doubts about their rights.

Dr. Arieh Roldán Mercado Sesma In practical terms, my main concern is that these two aspects and the economic factor are mixed. When ethical aspects are not considered during the practice of some health care provider, this action affects the health of another person in any of the spheres of his life, it could be in a reversible or, in the worst case, irreversible way. Most health decisions

are made considering only the perspective of one person or a few, without considering the user or patient, and many times without any evidence that the ethical aspects have been discussed, since most of the time the economic aspects are more relevant.

Dr. Thor Nissen Health and ethics are supposed to walk together, inseparably. Where to draw the line between them, may become tricky. Particularly in health research where unconceived chapters of the past have, willingly or not, darkened this discipline. The worst mistake we can make is to believe that these aberrations cannot happen again. We must keep our eyes, and mostly our consciousness, open. Before answering the question: How far am I capable to go to answer a scientific question? I invite you to review Milgram’s experiment, also identified by “The Perils of Obidience”, title of the article where the author first published the results and his conclusions. The experiment has been replicated many times with similar consequences. Those who want and can take 10 minutes, may watch the following related video: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=iUFN1eX2s6Q.
