Health and Ethics in the Contemporary World
“Medicine is the only universal profession, that everywhere follows the same methods, acts with the same goals, and seeks the same ends.”

The origins of medical ethics go back to ancient Greece, when Hippocrates drew up a set of ethical duties for healers, offering them what is still to this day known as the Hippocratic Oath. There followed, in the fifth century CE, the code known as the Formula Comitis Archiatrorum and the first book devoted to the subject of medical ethics, Practical Ethics of the Physician. Thanks to the perseverance, ingenuity, and curiosity of scholars through the ages, the world of research in the health sciences has never ceased to develop and widen its scope. At the present day, there are ethical committees on clinical research around the world, responsible for overseeing the proper development of biomedical research in general.
