Clifton College v Millfield
Saturday 11th October 2025, 15:00pm
We welcome Millfield back to the Close after our previous two encounters, playing away on the impressive Sir Gareth Edwards pitch and a busy night under lights at Clifton Rugby Club in the Ryan Bresnahan Memorial Match.
For the Clifton 1st XV, this will be our first return to the Close since the pitch has been busy hosting the Scottish and French international teams during the Women’s Rugby World Cup this season. I’m sure we will see more international class play from the boys, as this fixture has never disappointed in the excitement and skill that comes with every Schools Championship (TSC) match. Good luck to both teams for another sporting spectacle of the highest standard.

A huge thank you to all those that have come to support today. Needless to say today is a special rugby occasion due to the wonderful and healthy rivalry between our two schools. Days like today are what school sporting memories are made of, and I hope it will create a brilliant one for all those involved. The last five to six years have seen some amazing matches across all age groups but today is the first time in a long while that we have welcomed Millfield senior sides to the Close. Please can I ask that all supporters encourage their team with great passion but also join in celebrating both sides’ efforts in a true sporting manner. Post-match parent teas will be served from the Crypt under Chapel. Enjoy the match.
Matt Salter
It’s a real privilege to welcome you to the Close today for our first home game on BS1. Following an incredible few weeks of rugby here with Scotland and France women’s team training on our first team pitch during their Women’s Rugby World Cup campaigns.
We come into this game on the back of a strong run of performances with wins against Kirkham Grammar School and Hartpury College. The boys are looking to maintain this momentum throughout our season. This game against Millfield is a big one for Clifton College with some great and competitive games in the past. We know they’ll bring real quality and intensity, but that’s exactly the kind of challenge we want in our fixture list.
Thanks to everyone for coming down to support - enjoy the game.

Last weekend was a standout weekend for Old Cliftonians in the Premiership and URC leagues.
Cardiff Rugby celebrated a memorable performance from Tom Bowen, who became the youngest player in the professional era to score a hat-trick for the club. Fellow OC and Wales international, Ioan Lloyd also featured appearing off the bench.
At Exeter Chiefs, Immanuel Feyi-Waboso continued his exceptional run of form with a hat-trick of his own, underlying why he has become one of the most exciting talents in the English game.
Harry Taylor represented Gloucester Rugby, while Aidan Boschoff and Sam Worlsey both lined up for Bristol, exemplifying the power of our performance rugby programme.
Reflecting on the weekend’s success, Matt Salter, Director of Rugby said “It’s fantastic to see so many OCs performing at the highest level and also many more recent leavers beginning their senior rugby journey in the national leagues. These boys are contributing so significantly to their teams and it clearly shows the determination, skill and character, qualities that were evident during their time at Clifton. Their achievements are a source of pride for everyone connected with the College, and are a real inspiration for our current pupils.”
Many congratulations to all!
