LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

We all know that the summer can be a time for relaxation and recharging. Reading a book on the beach – or on the back patio – can be a great source of pleasure. It can also lead to new ideas that will move your business to the next level. In this issue, we put a spotlight on a few of our members and the books that inspire them.

We also have a feature on one of our members, Primrose School of Conroe, that has leaned into its Chamber membership to propel itself when it was just getting started. Owner Jennifer Millington’s story is inspirational, too. She walked into the Chamber building one day as she was embarking on her entrepreneurial journey; several years later, she was elected to the Chamber’s Board of Directors, eventually becoming the Chairman in 2024.

I was proud to sit beside Jennifer in Philadelphia last month as we went through the Chamber of the Year interview process. Our Chamber was honored to be one of three similarly-sized chambers selected as a finalist for this prestigious award – given by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. While we didn’t bring home the official title, we know our Chamber stands on top when it comes to the connections and collaborations that drive our members forward.

Now that we are in August and school is back in session, it is time to turn our attention toward Conroe/Lake Conroe’s annual homecoming –Lobsterfest. If you haven’t already, please make plans to attend this memorable event on October 2-3. Whether its golfing, steak & lobster, the silent auction, or just something else, we promise you’ll have a GREAT time.

Remember, shop local. Shop Chamber members!

THANK YOU DIPLOMATS!

The Chamber’s Diplomat team continues to shine, providing our members with more than just smiling faces. They engage our members at ribbon cuttings, networking events and Chamber special events. They are the first to volunteer their time and resources, manning the registration tables, greeting guests, decorating tables, and much more. Their participation in the recent ATHENA Leadership

Award Luncheon helped make that event such a success.

If you are interested in becoming a Chamber Diplomat, you’ll have the opportunity to apply this fall during the September/October application period. Look for notices in the weekly eFYI newsletter!

YOU ARE WHAT YOU READ!

As business leaders, we get inspiration from many sources. It may be from a mentor, your family, a song, or even a movie or TV show. Books, however, are a rich source of inspiration, and there is no shortage of business expertise in publications written by sages through the ages.

With summer winding down, and as we squeeze in some last-minute vacation time, you might want to have a book to read while relaxing on the beach. We asked some of our Chamber members (and leaders) to tell us what books have inspired them – and why.

Melanie Bush, BETTER BOOKKEEPERS

CRUCIAL CONVERSATIONS by Grenny, Patterson, McMillan, Switzler & Gregory

WHY DOES THIS BOOK RESONATE WITH YOU?

I feel as though in many ways our society has lost the ability to have difficult conversations. Whether family conflicts, employee issues, or workplace decisions, often people digress into Artificial Harmony because of a fear of challenging conversations. I love that this book tackles this topic.

HOW HAS THIS BOOK MADE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE?

It has made a difference in how I approach people of differing opinions in politics, employee performance issues, and even personal conflicts.

QUOTE THE MOST IMPORTANT SENTENCE (OR TWO) THAT CAPTURES THE ESSENCE OF THE BOOK FOR YOU:

“As much as others may need to change, or we may want them to change, the only person we can continually inspire, prod, and shape—with any degree of success—is the person in the mirror.”

I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK BECAUSE…

To quote the book, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Having healthy conversations is how we navigate through the hard of life. It takes work. But it’s worth it!

WHAT’S NEXT ON YOUR READING ITINERARY?

Currently, S uccessful Women Speak Differently by Valorie Burton. Next, The Road Less Stupid by Keith J. Cunningham

WHO MOVED MY CHEESE by Spencer Johnson, M.D.

WHY DOES THIS BOOK RESONATE WITH YOU?

The book resonates well with me deeply as a banking professional because it highlights the importance of adaptability in an ever-evolving industry. Throughout my career, I’ve held many positions and titles, and each transition required me to embrace change, stay alert to shifting markets, and to respond with resilience.

HOW HAS THIS BOOK MADE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE?

When I started my banking career over two decades ago, the HR manager suggested that all new hires read the book (they actually bought it for us). The book’s simple message…… change is constant, and your success depends on how quickly and positively you respond. My professional growth has not happened because there was no change, it grew because I faced, and adjusted to change, and always choose to move forward with purpose, clarity, and confidence.

QUOTE THE MOST IMPORTANT SENTENCE (OR TWO) THAT CAPTURES THE ESSENCE OF THE BOOK FOR YOU:

“The quicker you let go of old cheese, the sooner you find new cheese”… To me, this line is the book’s core message: embracing change, rather than resisting it. In doing so, this leads to

LaTina Roberson
Melanie Bush

growth, success, and fulfillment, professionally and personally. It encourages individuals to adapt quickly, stay flexible, and not cling to comfort zones when circumstances shift.

I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK BECAUSE…

Though it’s a very quick and simple read, the message is very powerful and long-lasting. The book offers timeless lessons on adaptability, mindset, and resilience through a story that’s easy to understand and apply. Whether someone is dealing with career shifts, relationship changes, or life transitions, it helps them to recognize fear, move past it, and take action… FEARLESSLY!

WHAT’S NEXT ON YOUR READING ITINERARY?

The Most Powerful Woman in the Room is YOU by Lydia Fenet (Currently reading)

Joshua Juarez, TRUE TEXAS SOLAR & ROOFING

CEO EXCELLENCE: THE SIX MINDSETS THAT DISTINGUISH THE BEST LEADERS FROM THE REST by Carolyn Dewar, Scott Keller, and Vikram Malhotra

as a leader while challenging me to level up in areas like talent development, board relationships, and leading with purpose.

HOW HAS THIS BOOK MADE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE?

This book helped me refine the way I approach decision-making,

QUOTE THE MOST IMPORTANT SENTENCE (OR TWO) THAT CAPTURES THE ESSENCE OF THE BOOK FOR YOU:

“The best CEOs think differently. They cultivate six distinct mindsets that shape everything they do.”

This line hit home for me—it’s not about having the answers, but about how you approach every challenge, conversation, and opportunity.

WHY DOES THIS BOOK RESONATE WITH YOU?

CEO Excellence resonates with me because it offers a practical and evidence-based breakdown of what truly sets great leaders apart. As a CEO navigating the fast-paced solar and roofing industry, I found its focus on mindset, not just tactics, deeply insightful. It affirmed many instincts I’ve developed

communication, and teambuilding at True Texas Solar & Roofing. It reinforced that great leadership is not just about vision or grit—it’s about consistency in applying the right mindsets across every dimension of your role. It has sharpened how I mentor emerging leaders within my company and how I lead through change.

I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK BECAUSE…

I recommend CEO Excellence to any leader— seasoned or emerging— who wants more than just strategies. This book helps you reframe how you show up daily, how you set the tone for your culture, and how you stay focused on what really drives longterm value. It’s a blueprint grounded in real-world success, not just theory.

BONUS INSIGHT:

The Most Important Book in My Life

While CEO Excellence has shaped my leadership journey, The Holy Bible is the most important book in my life. Its principles of integrity, humility, servant leadership, and faith form the foundation of how I lead and live. Scripture continually reminds me that true greatness comes from serving others, not elevating yourself.

“Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant.” — Matthew 20:26

That verse, and the Bible as a whole, keeps me anchored through every high and low of business and life.

Joshua Juarez

WHAT’S NEXT ON YOUR READING ITINERARY?

Next up is The Advantage by Patrick Lencioni. I’m excited to dive deeper into how organizational health drives success and how to align team culture with strategic clarity—two areas I’m always working to refine.

Megan Alarid, HEIGHTENED LEADERS

10X IS EASIER THAN 2X by Dr. Benjamin Hardy and Dan Sullivan

WHY DOES THIS BOOK RESONATE WITH YOU?

As a Visionary Business Owner, and a coach to Visionary Business Owners, I know how easy it is to envision what I really want. I also know it is very hard to find the path to it. This book helped

to change my thinking about how you can achieve what you really want for yourself and your business.

HOW HAS THIS BOOK MADE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE?

Motivation. Clarity. New concepts. I could probably name a lot of ways this made a difference but I would tell you this book has changed my thought process and my ability to achieve a lot in a little bit of time.

QUOTE THE MOST IMPORTANT SENTENCE (OR TWO) THAT CAPTURES THE ESSENCE OF THE BOOK FOR YOU:

“You know what you are committed to by the results you are getting.”

I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK BECAUSE…

I recommend this book to every visionary business owner because I would much rather change my thought process. With that change I know I can create significant impact instead of just getting 10% more of the stressors I already have.

WHAT’S NEXT ON YOUR READING ITINERARY?

The Existing Market Trap – it’s a new one that helps you differentiate your product from the noise of others.

Megan Alarid

FINDING INSPIRATION.

We asked the Chamber staff to tell us what books have made an impact on them –personally and/or professionally. Here’s what they shared:

HARPER

Switch by Chip & Dan Heath

Loved the perspective of this book as I have had a lot of “fix it” situations in my professional life. This book laid out practical ways to find a balance between the conscious/ rational part of our brain and the unconscious/ emotional part.

Using real life experiences and stories here are the three things that stood out to me about change:

1. What looks like a people problem is often a situation problem.

2. What looks like laziness is often exhaustion.

3. What looks like resistance is often a lack of clarity.

For anything to change, someone has to start acting differently. To change someone’s behavior, you’ve got to change that person’s situation. As leaders we have the ability to impact and change that person’s situation, therefore, influencing a desired behavior.

VEAZEY

The Power of Moments by Chip & Dan Heath

The Power of Moments dives into why certain brief experiences have extraordinary impact. Reading this book reminded me that leadership isn’t about managing the dayto-day grind. It’s about creating meaningful spikes in people’s experiences. Moments they’ll remember for decades. It pushed me to start deliberately crafting defining experiences for those around me, shaping not just what we do, but who we become together.

The Art of Letting Go by Nick Trenton

I chose this book because it offers a straightforward and relatable approach to managing stress, anxiety, and the tendency to overthink. Trenton breaks down the mental patterns that keep us stuck and provides simple tools to help shift our mindset, reframe negative thoughts, and move forward with clarity. It is a helpful reminder that letting go is not about ignoring problems, but about creating the space to deal with life in a healthier, more balanced way.

BRITTANY CASTELLON , Director, Membersip Experience

Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins

What resonated most was the raw, personal nature of Goggins’ story— he shares his deepest struggles and shows how relentless determination helped him overcome even the toughest odds. I was especially moved by the way he responded to failure—not as an endpoint, but as a signal to adjust, refocus, and try again. His mindset and the way he turned pain into fuel for progress felt like a much-needed jolt of motivation.

GIGI PEACOCK , Director, Membership Sales

The Go-Giver by Bob Burg & John David Mann

The Go-Giver packs a powerful punch. Through a charming story of a young professional chasing success, this book reveals the surprising secret: giving is the key to getting ahead. With humor, heart, and a touch of business savvy, it’s a reminder that relationships, generosity, and genuine connection are what truly drive success— in work and in life. I truly believe that our power to make a difference comes from fostering authentic and lasting relationships.

SHANNAN REID,

21 Seconds to Change Your World by Dr. Mark Rutland

I am reminded that when words fail, Scripture doesn’t. This book challenged me to embrace both the Lord’s Prayer and the 23rd Psalm, not just as guides for prayer, but as powerful, literal prayers themselves. Psalm 23, especially, has become an anchor for me. It provides a steady truth in moments of chaos or uncertainty and It is a beautiful reminder that sometimes, the most transformational prayers are the ones already written for us.

STEVE SCHEFFLER,

Leadership in Turbulent Times by Doris Kearns Goodwin

Not only is Goodwin an incredible historian, in this book she weaves in timeless leadership lessons by exploring the lives and decisions of four of the most influential U.S. presidents – Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson. I refer to this book often when faced with difficult decisions.

MARCELA ORNELAS , Manager, Marketing & Communications

Show Your Work! by Austin Kleon

In Show Your Work!, Austin Kleon shares ten practical ways to get noticed by sharing your process, ideas, and creativity rather than waiting for a “big reveal.” As an artist and marketer, I’ve found it invaluable, and I believe every business owner can use its advice to build trust, connect with customers, and let people see the value behind what they do on social media and beyond.

On the surface, Jennifer Millington’s journey as a small business owner and entrepreneur is not unfamiliar in the Chamber world. Many Chamber members join as they transition from one career in pursuit of a dream to own their own business.

That was certainly the case with Millington, who had spent years both as a teacher and administrator in a local public school district. But she had reached a fork in the road – and saw an opportunity to take a different path…the Primrose path!

Like many Primrose School franchise owners, Millington and her husband (and coowner), Ric, fell in love with the brand after seeing the

impact the educational childcare environment had on her own child. As a teacher, Jennifer had witnessed how graduates of Primrose who entered her classroom excelled above the rest. But it wasn’t until her son, Luke, attended a Primrose school that she was truly impressed with the school’s approach to education and character development.

Early on in this Primrose path, however, she paid a visit to the Conroe/ Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce. Not only would this visit give her resources to help start her business, but it would also lead to new levels of leadership within the Chamber itself.

“I knew education, but I didn’t know how to market my business, and how to partner with other businesses,” said Millington. “I was told that joining the Chamber was the best first step,

Once Millington was established within the Chamber, her leadership role continued as she eventually was asked join the Board and, soon after, Executive Board.

In 2013, Millington realized her dream of opening her own school and making a positive impact on local families by opening the Primrose School of Conroe.

DOWN THE PRIMROSE PATH

Journey to small business ownership also leads to Chamber leadership established to grow, asked to after, the

and truly it was. It’s been a great experience all the way around.”

Once she joined the Chamber, Millington built relationships that have lasted to this day. She began volunteering to serve on various committees, including Professional Business Development, Workforce Development, and a variety of Chamber events.

“ The support I received as a business owner was huge. I could ask any question and I always got help.

I’ve never forgotten how people like John Stacey (CEO of Catalyst Strategy Consulting, Inc.) gave me advice and made me feel part of something bigger.

That’s what the Chamber is about; it lifts everyone up.”

“I was able to follow alongside Chairmen such as Dr. (Rebecca) Riley, Cody Spence and Nick Davis,” she said. When it came time for her to take on the role of Chairman in 2024, Millington never looked back.

Prior to deciding to open Primrose School of Conroe, Jennifer spent 13 years in the education industry. She taught reading, writing, and social studies and spent four years working as an

“One of my primary goals was to reinvigorate our committee structure and structure our board meetings so that the work of the Chamber was the main focus,” she said. “I was also honored to be Chairman during our historic 90th anniversary year.”

Instructional Specialist where she supervised teachers in their implementation of reading and writing curriculum in pre-K to eight grade classrooms.

“The Primrose curriculum is unlike what parents find at a typical childcare option; the national Education Advisory Board for Primrose constantly pushes the envelope to remain at the forefront of early childhood education,” said Jennifer. “I love seeing our students grow and learn each day they spend at our school. Helping shape our community’s children into caring, responsible citizens is truly rewarding for us.”

She sees that same role and responsibility in her involvement with the Chamber, and she encourages

business owners just starting out to join and – just as important –get involved.”

“The Chamber makes it so easy to do that – to connect. But these people are more than just connections, they are truly my friends, and I enjoy being around them.

“ The most important thing is to build relationships.”

NONPROFIT SPOTLIGHT

WHAT IS THE MISSION OF NEW DANVILLE?

New Danville provides adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities an opportunity to live enriched and purposeful lives.

WHEN (AND HOW) DID IT BEGIN? HOW DID THE LOCATION COME ABOUT?

New Danville was started in 2005 by founder Kathy Sanders to serve adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. With being on a ranch, we lovingly refer to the people we serve as

Wranglers. What started as a dream to ensure her son’s future would be not only safe but filled with opportunities to grow and thrive, became a reality through the residential, job skills and day programs at New Danville. As we celebrate our 20-year anniversary this year, we reflect back on all of the people in our community who have been dedicated to our mission and purpose. New Danville exists because of the generosity, love and partnership from individuals and families, businesses, civic groups, grant funders

and the faith community and their commitment to providing opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live, learn, work and grow.

HOW HAS NEW DANVILLE DEVELOPED AND CHANGED OVER ITS HISTORY?

New Danville has seen significant growth over the years. Our day program enrollment has expanded from 80 to 125 in just the past two years alone. Our programs continue to evolve to meet the growing and changing needs of the special needs adults we serve.

WHAT IS THE BEST-KEPT SECRET THAT PEOPLE

SHOULD KNOW ABOUT NEW DANVILLE?

New Danville is a beautiful 42acre ranch located in Willis that we describe as one of the happiest places on earth. Our residential, jobs training and day programs are all provided on property making up an inclusive, supportive and loving community. We provide opportunities to our Wranglers to work toward individual goals with the support, instruction and guidance of our dedicated staff. We focus on celebrating the abilities of our Wranglers and the joy that they bring to us all every day.

HOW

CAN THE COMMUNITY SUPPORT NEW DANVILLE?

There are several ways the community can support New Danville:

• Sponsor a special fundraising event – Spring Thing Luncheon and Golf Tournament

• Donate – financial contributions to support our day program, transportation, training and scholarship programs

• Shop at Jazzy Junque Resale Shop – all proceeds go to New Danville

• Be an advocate – help us share the wonderful story of the critical work we are doing and how important the need is for our services

WHAT EVENTS/ACTIVITIES

DOES NEW DANVILLE USE TO RAISE FUNDS/RESOURCES/ AWARENESS FROM THE LOCAL COMMUNITY?

We have 2 major fundraising events each year-

Spring : New Danville Spring Thing Luncheon

Fall: Play a Round for the Wranglers Golf Tournament link: newdanville.org/golf

We have additional community events benefiting New Danville including:

• Annual Food and Wine Week Chef Showcase Extravaganza (May) and Wine Walk (October)

• Truluck’s The Woodlands Charity Breakfast (August 27, 2025) https://tinyurl. com/k733rt67

The Jazzy Junque Resale Boutique, located in the outlet mall on League Line Rd. and I-45, is an upscale resale store offering a variety of high-quality furniture and houseware items, antiques and unique

treasures. All proceeds support New Danville.

WHAT IS ON THE HORIZON FOR NEW DANVILLE?

New Danville is thrilled to embark on an expansion project this year! Phase one of the expansion is for our residential program beginning this summer. This will allow us to increase the number of residents from 36 to 92. The need for housing in the special needs population is significant. We are proud to address this issue by providing life-changing opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live independently in a safe, supportive and nurturing environment.

2025 ATHENA LEADERSHIP AWARD LUNCHEON HIGHLIGHTS

Rachel Goodlad, head of expansion at Alpha School and immediate past president of The Junior League of The Woodlands, was named the 2025 ATHENA Leadership Award recipient by the Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce. The prestigious award honors individuals who demonstrate professional excellence, community service, and a commitment to helping women achieve their leadership potential.

CONGRATULATIONS, RACHEL GOODLAD!

This year, the Chamber received 15 nominations from across Montgomery County. From that group, three outstanding finalists were selected and celebrated for their impact: Goodlad, Sonya Brazeal, and Monette Smith. The award was presented at the ATHENA Leadership Luncheon on Friday, July 18, 2025, at Margaritaville Lake Conroe, presented by Better Bookkeepers.

Goodlad’s leadership in both the education and nonprofit sectors has left a lasting mark in Montgomery County. Through her work at Alpha School and her leadership with The Junior League of The Woodlands, she has mentored and inspired countless women to grow, lead, and give back with confidence.

The Chamber partners with ATHENA International to present the ATHENA Leadership Award, recognizing women who help improve the quality of life for others while actively assisting women and young girls in realizing their full potential. Presented in over 500 communities worldwide, the ATHENA Leadership Award celebrates those who lead with courage,

wisdom, and generosity.

“Rachel is a tireless advocate for mentoring women of all ages to become stronger leaders in our community,” said Scott Harper, President of the Chamber. “She is a worthy recipient of the ATHENA Award.”

Harper also praised Valorie Burton, ATHENA’s keynote presenter, who gave an inspiring speech that captivated the attendees. Burton is an international speaker, entrepreneur, author and life coach.

“Valorie gave a message not only of hope, but of strategy, for employing leadership with dignity, respect, and power,” he said. “No one left the room unchanged following her words.”

The ATHENA event, through its wine pull and popup shops, also raised money for its designated beneficiary, Community Assistance Center.
