Welcome to our new and updated Connections magazine!

This issue marks the “return” of Connections as a locally produced, designed and printed Chamber publication. The Chamber staff worked hard to put it together – with the assistance of our very own Chamber members.

Inside this issue, you’ll find an in-depth cover story about the rise of “Texas Medical Center North,” as hospitals and health care resources in Montgomery County continue to change the landscape of our community.

Our county is growing – and aging – dramatically, and our health care providers have risen to the challenge. Likewise, other businesses have emerged to handle the increased demand for services catering to the 50-and-older demographic.

The Chamber just concluded its 7th annual ATHENA Leadership Award Luncheon. This is not only our fastest-growing event, but also highly anticipated, especially among our female members and community.

Congratulations to Nicole Robinson Gauthier on her selection as the 2024 ATHENA Leadership Award recipient. She epitomizes the attributes of ATHENA International’s principles of enlightened leadership.

As the Chamber’s 90th anniversary celebration continues, I want to congratulate our Marketing Communications team on earning a well-deserved award at the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives annual conference earlier this summer. This was for the Chamber’s 90th anniversary documentary-style video.

Over the past several months, the Chamber’s Young Professionals Network has been busy with an equal measure of networking, professional development and community service. Chamber Board member Darwin Canales with Crown Brand-Building Products serves as the chair of the Young Professionals Network, along with a host of dedicated committee members. YPN has a busy fall schedule planned, so make sure to check the Chamber calendar for details.

Giving back had YPN’s attention in April. More than two dozen YPN members had a rewarding time volunteering with Meals on Wheels Montgomery County, serving local seniors and some of their furry companions. From decorating bags to delivering meals, every moment was filled with warmth and gratitude. Thank you to everyone who made it a success!

YPN’s focus in May was professional development. A group of approximately 40 YPNers gathered for a presentation over lunch featuring Judge Echo Hutson from Montgomery County Court at Law 4. She shared expertise on conflict resolution in the workplace, offering practical tips on de-escalating conflicts and addressing issues early to maintain healthy relationships, whether at work or home. Special thanks to Astro Fence Company for sponsoring lunch.

In June, YPN’s event at Alta Sergeant apartments was a fantastic evening of socializing, drinks, and fun! Attendees had a great time enjoying shuffleboard and delicious snacks in addition to touring the beautiful new apartment complex. Thanks to Alta Sergeant for hosting and to everyone who joined!

YPN concluded its summer activities by volunteering with Family Promise of Montgomery County, providing a meal for the facility’s residents and playing outdoor games with the children and their parents. True Texas Solar sponsored the dinner.

After the selection in March of more than a dozen new Diplomats, one of the highest priorities has been member retention. Emergence of Healthcare Facilities Creates Modern Medical Hub MONTGOMERY COUNTY’S TREMENDOUS GROWTH CAN BE MEASURED IN SEVERAL WAYS. ARGUABLY THE MOST TELLING SIGN OF THE AREA’S BOOM IS HEALTHCARE’S EMERGENCE TO SERVE ONE OF THE NATION’S FASTEST GROWING POPULATIONS.

Investments from healthcare companies in Montgomery County have delivered strong measurable and intangible results. New jobs, quality care, and a healthier community can be attributed to expanding medical options. From humble origins on First Street in Conroe to its current 332-bed complex on South Loop 336, the longest standing hospital in Montgomery County has been a catalyst for the region’s healthcare boom. HCA Conroe and its approximately 1,200 employees have evolved to treat Conroe’s growing population.

MEMORIAL HERMANN THE WOODLANDS MEDICAL CENTER Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center has long standing roots in Montgomery County.

Formerly known as The Woodlands Community Hospital, the facility became part of Memorial Hermann in 1991. The hospital is the largest healthcare employer in Montgomery County with more than 3,400 employees. Much of that growth occurred in the last ten years, according Justin Kendrick, Senior Vice President and CEO, Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center.

“When I got here in 2014, we had around 1,600 employees. Today we have 3,400. We continue to retain and recruit individuals that want to live out their life’s purpose to provide quality outcomes and create memorable experiences for everybody that we have the privilege to care for,” said Kendrick.

The 457-bed facility boasts a Level II Trauma Center and Level III NICU. More than 80 areas of specialty

care are treated by a team of approximately 1,300 affiliated physicians.

The Canopy Cancer Survivor Center at Memorial Hermann offers impactful services, such as support groups, activities, and resources, to cancer survivors and caregivers at no cost. Jack Wolf IV Memorial Park offers a respite for families in the form of a play area for kids.

Kendrick hopes to continue enhancing current service lines while identifying strategic partnerships that help Memorial Hermann meet future growth.

“We are continuing to look at services needed within our main campus and strategic partnerships to serve outlying communities with the most critical patient needs,” Kendrick offered.

ST. LUKE’S HEALTH THE WOODLANDS HOSPITAL St. Luke’s Health- The Woodlands Hospital opened in 2003 and was the first to bring open heart surgery to The Woodlands. Awarded with an ‘A’ hospital safety grade from Leapfrog Group, the facility was the first comprehensive stroke center in Montgomery County.

The hospital offers dozens of specialty services and is home to several healthcare institutes. St. Luke’s is designated as a Level III NICU and Level III Maternal Center. It is integrated for collaboration with key partners, including Texas Children’s Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine, and Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center. Specialized oncologists and radiologists allow patients to receive cancer treatments near their home.

HOUSTON METHODIST THE WOODLANDS HOSPITAL Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital began offering care to Montgomery County in 2016 with its breast care center.

The following year it unveiled its world-class medical complex that further expanded in 2022. The 725,000 square-foot facility contains 293 inpatient beds, 25 ICU beds, 58 birthing center beds, and 24 operating rooms.

The number one ranked complex care medical center in the nation by Vizient for patient safety, quality, and service, Houston Methodist The Woodlands is committed to leading medicine in Montgomery County. The campus offers a nationally accredited comprehensive stroke center, orthopedic center of excellence, cancer center, Level III NICU, and Level III maternal care unit. Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital is recognized by American Nurses Credentialing Center with the prestigious Magnet designation, a distinction earned by less than 10 percent of hospitals nationally.

SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIVERSITY Sam Houston State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU-COM), the newest addition to Conroe’s healthcare lineup, is focused on addressing shortages of primary care physicians in Texas. Founded in 2019 in Grand Central Park, this May the college graduated 69 doctors in its first class. Every graduating student received a residency placement with nearly 60 percent staying in Texas.

More than 500 students will enroll at SHSU-COM in the fall, to help satisfy a major healthcare need in Montgomery County.

“We promote community-based education in primary care and community-based specialties with a focus on rural and underserved areas,” said Dr. Thomas Mohr, SHSU-COM Dean.

SHSU-COM has demonstrated student success with its two initial classes producing 97 and 99 percent first-time pass rates on the national licensure exam. SHSU-COM is the most cost-effective osteopathic college in the country, thanks to legislation passed during the 88th Texas Legislature.

“We can show, in a very short period of time, that we’re doing really good things,” added Mohr.

Adjacent to SHSU-COM, Sam Houston State University is constructing a state-of-the-art facility to house four key academic programs: Doctor of Physical Therapy and Master of Science in Athletic Training, Dietetics, and Physician Assistant.

The strategic location of the Health Professions Building allows for collaboration with SHSU-COM. “We train physicians to be leaders and to understand the roles of other members of the healthcare team. With the Health Professions Building going up here, it’s going to be helpful for our students to work with other students,” said Mohr.

LONE STAR FAMILY HEALTH CENTER With locations in and around Montgomery County, Lone Star Family Health Center is a full-service health center offering family medicine, women’s health, dental, behavioral health, and other wraparound services. The non-profit serves patients from all backgrounds by offering services on a sliding scale based on household income.

Lone Star Family Health Center assigns priority on prevention and works closely with nearby healthcare facilities to treat patients who do not need hospital care.

“As a community health center, we have a mission of reaching the underserved pockets of the communities to try to fill as many medical gaps as possible,” said Karen Harwell, Lone Star Family Health Center CEO. “We fill a unique role in the industry. ‘ Silver Tsunami’ Strikes in Montgomery County SURGE IN AGING POPULATION CREATES EXPANDED LIVING & CARE OPTIONS

As the population of Montgomery County continues to age, the need for businesses that support this growing demographic is more and more apparent. Aside from the need for improved access to healthcare (see cover story on the emergence of Montgomery County’s medical center), ancillary businesses have emerged to provide a variety of senior living options and consulting.

The aging population in Montgomery County over the last 30 years is part of a broader demographic trend seen across the U.S. The average age in Montgomery County (37.3 years) is almost two years above the state average of 35.6, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. In 2000, the average age in Montgomery County was 34.5. Given that the county’s population has also more than doubled since that time, this has created an even greater demand for senior residential options.

FINDING A PLACE TO LIVE One of the most difficult times for a senior is when their living conditions warrant a move to a more structured environment. Oftentimes, this is a result of changes in health, but it could also be a desire to be free of a large home and all that comes with it.

From Crisis to New Creation LOCAL RANCH/SCHOOL/HOME PROVIDES NEW TRAJECTORY IN CHILDREN’S LIVES

WHEN MARK MABRY LOOKS BACK ON THE PAST 13 YEARS OF HIS LIFE, IT’S SOMETIMES HARD TO BELIEVE HE’S MADE IT THIS FAR. “THIS FAR” MEANS ESCAPING FROM AN EXTREMELY TURBULENT CHILDHOOD, FINDING A NEW HOME AT STILL CREEK RANCH, GRADUATING FROM TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY, LAUNCHING A CAREER, GETTING MARRIED, AND BECOMING A FATHER. “As an 11-year-old boy, my life turned upside down and I was terrified,” remembers Mabry. “I was losing my abusive father to drug addiction every day. He loved getting high more than he loved me and my mom.”

Mabry said his father used all the family’s money to feed his addiction.

“It meant not having enough money to get my lunches at school or not having enough money for the clothes that I needed.”

When Mabry was still in elementary school, his father was incarcerated for his third DWI (a felony). Shortly thereafter, his mother died suddenly and unexpectedly.

That was before he found Still Creek Ranch. Or, did Still Creek Ranch find him? Regardless, Mabry believes it was divine intervention.

“I can only thank God for leading me to Still Creek. Our local church pastor knew about our family history. Initially, he helped (mom and I) transition to a local women’s clinic for abused mothers and children.”

But with his mother’s death, an interview was arranged with Still Creek. At first, Mabry was skeptical.

“They knew I had nowhere to go if they didn’t take me. But as a scared 11-year-old boy who had just lost what seemed to be the only person to care about me, I did not want to give Still Creek the time of day.”

Once again, he says, God navigated him through the interview, and he was accepted into Still Creek.

“I am grateful for two things that Still Creek taught me while living there. Number one is the work ethic that was instilled in me on that ranch. When I was there picking up thousands of bales of hay and taking care of the animals like horses, steers, and chickens, I definitely did not want to do it in the moment, but it made me not afraid to work. The other thing that I took away from Still Creek is the beginning of my relationship with God, and that is the most important relationship that I could have left Still Creek with.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE Still Creek Ranch’s roots go back to the 1970s when its founders provided pro bono counseling services and ministry for at-risk boys. Since 1988, when it took the name Still Creek Ranch, its mission has been to take children from crisis to new creation. This has been accomplished with Still Creek’s four core values: - Safe Home - The Gospel - Great Education, and a - Solid Work Ethic.

Located on 200 acres of ranch country outside Bryan/ College Station, Still Creek’s operations include the Still Creek Christian Academy (grades 4-12), multiple boys and girls homes with a total of 32 beds (16 for boys and 16 for girls), a full equestrian program, along with a working ranch

in which all residents contribute to its upkeep. Still Creek also offers a college scholarship program and apartmentstyle living to its graduates who choose to stay in the Bryan/ College Station area for their college studies.

“We recently expanded our services to help graduates so that they don’t ‘age out’ of our care during college or early career development,” said Inmon. “The Transitional Living Program (TLP) is where a great deal of our forward focus and goals are. Additionally, we launched Whole Child Initiative at Still Creek in 2023, which helps us take care of the children even better than before. By setting goals in the areas of education, emotional health, physical health, as well as social and spiritual growth, we are seeing great results already with children taking ownership for setting goals and having agency for their own growth.”

FROM STILL CREEK TO AGGIELAND AND BEYOND Though he is too humble to mention it, Mabry also left Still Creek with some incredible athletic accolades.

“We have a small school at the ranch, and a basketball team that Mark played on was a state champion one year and state runner-up another year,” said James Inmon, executive director of Still Creek Ranch. “Upon graduation from Still Creek, he became a freshman at Texas A&M. In that freshman year, he met coaches that recognized his size and agility. Despite not playing a down of football (Still Creek doesn’t offer football as a sport), he ended up walking on as a defensive lineman in 2018. He went on to graduate in 2020 with a degree in Sports Management.”

Mabry also met his future wife (Kaitlin) while in college and they married in January 2021. The Mabry’s welcomed their first child, Cohen, in December 2021, followed by a second

The ranch also has several fundraising events each year, including a fall golf tournament, a two-day rodeo (Still Creek Stampede PRCA Rodeo) in March at the Brazos County Expo Center, a clay shoot in August, and a Boots & Bling gala in October.

For Mabry, investing in the place where his life took its positive trajectory, is important.

“I know that the kids (who enter Still Creek) are going through a time in their life where they have no idea what is going on and that can be scary. Still Creek needs finances to feed these kids, to provide the right schooling, and to go on trips in the summer just like normal kids do,” he said.

In addition to the significant financial donations he’s made, Mabry has also given of his time.

“These kids need good role models to volunteer their time and show them that people do care about them and they are loved, even if they don’t feel like it.”

Whether donating money, resources or time, Mabry says the results will be worth the investment.

“By giving back, know that you are changing a child’s life for the better. You are continuing to build leaders in the community and build men and women of God.”

“Mark now gives back to Still Creek,” said Inmon. “They have become solid contributors financially to the ranch where Mark grew up. It’s truly a full circle story and a complete change in family trajectory and legacy.”

NEED FOR FUNDING, RESOURCES When a child comes to live at the ranch, it can be a 10-plusyear commitment,” said Inmon. “Managing and cultivating our resources to ensure we can meet our residents’ needs is critical. This is especially important because Still Creek doesn’t take federal funding, instead relying on private donations.”

When potential donors see the life-changing atmosphere that Still Creek fosters, the value for their contribution is apparent. Inmon says that, while cash donations serve the most immediate needs, Still Creek is always looking for volunteers to help with facilities upkeep. This could include ranch work, organizing clothing, donating to (and rotating) the pantry, adopting flower beds, etc. Such work is ideal for service groups, church groups and interested individuals.

Lunden encouraged her audience to “say yes” to careerenhancing opportunities, pointing to several in her career that led to bigger and better things. She also emphasized the importance of staying healthy – especially early in life – which she attributed to helping her overcome breast cancer in her 40s. Getting regular health check-ups, she said, is something all women – and men – must take seriously.

This is the seventh year that the Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce has partnered with ATHENA International, an organization that develops, supports, and honors girls and women from the classroom to the boardroom, building a global pipeline of women leaders.

The Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce and Education for Tomorrow Alliance celebrated graduates of the Next Generation Leadership (NGL) program.

NGL is a year-long leadership program that connects 12th graders to leaders in education, government, healthcare, and more in Montgomery County. Students representing 12 area high schools also work with leadership development professionals and Leadership Montgomery County mentors to cultivate their own skills.
