Thematic Object, Transformation of Personal Insperation

The Thematic Object Project practices skills learned in sketching with the use of a personal object. Origami was a hobby I had in middle school. It was what caught people’s attention and was how I was able to make new friends. Now, I practice origami to relax and enjoy making them for others with a scrap of paper is free. Brings joy to one’s face when seeing a little bird.

With this origami dragon as my object, I started with a modified contour to understand the shape. The use of sections helps view the object in different perspectives. Then, using figure ground, I am able to see pieces of the folds that have an interesting shape. Overlapping these shapes on one another using a variety of spatial organization, I come to the conclusion of a radial organization. Finally, I add trees and other vegetation onto the landscape, adding features for water and elevations.

Rediscovering Gardens, Whimsical Landscape

Outdoor park setting for general use while promoting the profession of landscape architecture. The park needs to accentuate new design trends in the profession. The client has wants for the site: bathrooms, concession stands, shading, and recreation.

The trend for the program is ‘rediscovering gardens’, having people to be surrounded by beautiful flora. With an isometric grid, planting and human use can be organized separately. On the horizontal grid, human intervention is organized on the main, linear, pathway. On the 30 degree grid, the vegetation is lined up, creating enclosed spaces for human interventions. The vine canopy creates the iso-grid, providing shade for people.

Werth Memorial Garden,

UConn Student Union Lawn, Storrs, CT

The site is located in between the Student Union and the Benton Museum, experiencing high foot traffic. My proposal is to repurpose spaces of the lawn for activities. One, events are usually held at the lawn and a stage is needed to be set up. A permanent stage would help solidify the area for events. The stage can then be used by student organizations for events year-round. Two, a large tent was set up on the lawn during the pandemic which provided students with shade. The tent was later removed. I propose a small forest garden so students can have a place to work outdoors with the comfort of shade.

Werth Memorial Garden,

Peter J. Werth Residence Tower, Storrs, CT

With community in mind, the Matrix planting style has plants that support one another. The planting style has three groups: Primary, the main plant that aims to attract people’s attention. Scattered, perennials that are placed around the planter that adds a surprise and diversity. Matrix, a mix of grasses and ground-cover plants that make up the majority of the space. Matrix planting is “wild” and can look beautiful from many angles. This can help create a memorable sight from any view; seen in front or back, inside or outside.

Urban Acupunrure: Green to Coast Project, New Haven, CT

New Haven is the second largest city in Connecticut. We want to hone in on community engagement with the city to view its needs with the objective to create a series of small-scale intervention to help link the Downtown to Long Wharf. With the use of Urban Acupuncture, we aim to transform specific sites into meaningful spaces for people to rest, play and connect; Focusing on seating & shading, bringing vegetation into the city, and implementing pop-up activities by the streets.

Meadowood Project, Simsbury,

CT

Meadowood is located in Simsbury, CT. The town would like to hear about ideas of how to use the collected 92 acres of land. The land was formerly a tobacco farm, the owners would hire students from black colleges in exchange for tuition. One notable student would be Dr. Martin Luther King Jr who would visit the farm in the summer. This project views the elements of the site and how we can build on them.

This project entails a collection of work to describe a narrative of planning and design. For more information on each piece please refer to the QR code.

Residential Garden, Norwalk,

CT

First project, when out to property with fellow colleges to survey the land. After creating a rough estimate of the landscape, we took it back to the office to draft it into AutoCAD. This was then edited the cheif designer and later finalized with the client.
