As I think about the many people and local groups I have met, I am reminded of why being a Councillor is so important to me. To see the faces of the young people from Beechlawn, Parkview, Longstone and Tor Bank schools at our recent ‘Mayor’s Sports Day’ was a truly memorable moment. And raising awareness and funds for Cancer Fund for Children has been both humbling and rewarding as I spent time with little Grace Deery and Young Ollie Montgomery who have bravely faced their own cancer journeys.

In my last week as Mayor, I will be leading

It’s been an honour to serve you as Mayor. Thank you.

If you are a busy parent, guardian or carer, then why not enrol them in our popular ‘Summer in the city’ programme? Let us ensure your little ones (aged 5 to 12 years of age) beat the boredom during the summer break whilst staying social and active! You could book them into a different activity every week.

Parents across Lisburn and Castlereagh eagerly look forward to the launch of our ‘Summer in the city’ programme. It helps them to plan childcare or encourage their kids to get out of the house and meet new friends.

This year’s programme is jam packed with activity schemes, sports courses and camps to keep children engaged and entertained throughout the summer months.

Our summer scheme for children aged 5 to 12 years includes: coached activities, games, arts and crafts, bouncy castles and much more. Schemes will be delivered at various facilities across our area. Once again the Disability Hub at Lough Moss Leisure Centre will offer inclusive cycle sessions for all the family.

Children can also try out a new sport with a choice of Gaelic football and even ice-skating camps!

Keeping active helps improve the health and mental wellbeing of all ages and we strive to provide a variety of programmes for children. We want them to have a chance to have fun, find a love for a new sport or develop a new skill which will inspire a lifetime of physical activity.

TAKE CARE in the garden this summer

When the weather starts to improve we all look to spend more time outdoors. This may involve going to the park or spending time in your own garden or that of a friend or relative.

We want to everyone to stay safe in the garden so be sure to read our top tips below.

Toddlers can drown in an inch (3cms) of water! Look out for plant pots and sand pit lids that can fill with rainwater. It is best to store containers upside down.

Avoid injury to adults and children - make sure sharp gardening tools are in good repair and safely tidied/ locked away.

Keep fence gates secured when young children are playing.

Fun in the sun

Electric powered tools and mowers should be used with a Residual Current Device (RCD) to protect against electrocution.

Check for poisonous plants such as those having berries which may be attractive to children - your local garden centre will help find them.

Always store chemicals in their original containers, safely out of sight and reach of children.

Remove animal droppings promptly and carefully as they may carry harmful diseases.

Ensure play equipment is in good repair and located on a soft surface with clear space around it.

If you are over 65, have a disability/vulnerability or have children under 5, please phone our team on 028 9244 7394 to book your free home safety visit.

When the sun shines, many of us think about going on a picnic or lighting a barbecue. What we don’t always consider when the sun is out is to apply sunscreen.

It is important to protect yourself from harmful UV rays even if you see some clouds in the sky. Stay safe and apply sunscreen to you and your loved ones so the only memories you have of a great day are ‘fun and sun’ and not ‘sun and burn’.

If having a BBQ or a picnic, please make sure to:

• keep your food cool before eating and/or cooking

• cook your meat thoroughly so juices run clear

• put all leftovers in the fridge as soon as possible

THINKING OF FOSTERING?

Every child and young person deserves to live in a stable and nurturing home where they can develop and are encouraged to reach their potential.

Foster carers are ordinary people who do an incredible thing by supporting a child/ young person when they need it most. They come from a range of backgrounds, offering different skills and attributes to meet the needs of each child and young person.

If you are a good listener, patient, understanding and caring, you already have many of the qualities to make a great foster carer.

HSC NI Foster Care strives to recruit more foster carers across all communities in Northern Ireland to enable children and young people to remain within their local community when they cannot live with their birth family.

The benefits are: they can maintain contact with their friends, maintain their interests

and hobbies and avoid travelling longer distances to school.

There are different ways you can help depending on your lifestyle and family circumstances as not all foster care requires a full-time commitment.

HSC NI Foster Care particularly needs more foster carers for sibling groups, teenagers and children/young people with disabilities or complex needs.

You can foster whether you are married, have a partner or are single, you work, you own or rent your home, or whether you are a parent or not. HSC NI Foster Care welcomes enquiries from people regardless of race, religion, language, culture, gender, disability, age or sexual orientation.

HSC NI foster carers receive a wide range of training, 24/7 support, ongoing development opportunities and financial allowances.

Across Northern Ireland, there are children and young people who need a loving home and a stable environment in which they can develop and thrive.

Did you know that not having a clearly displayed number on your property could mean the difference between life and death?

The emergency services – including police, paramedics and the fire serviceare committed to responding as quickly as possible to an incident. We don’t want emergency services to be delayed when they are doing their best to respond as soon as possible.

You can help them by ensuring the number of your property is easily seen from the road.

This is particularly important in rural areas that have no identifying house or business numbers. Often, property numbers can be hidden by trees or

overgrown hedges, or are too small to see, or have no signage at all.

In health terms, early intervention is crucial if a person has experienced a significant accidental injury or has a lifethreatening medical condition that could lead to cardiac arrest and death. So that critically ill or injured patients have the best chance of survival, they need to be given hospital-level care as urgently as possible.

Remember if emergency services cannot find a property quickly, then vital time is lost for those who need their help.

IS YOUR COMMUNITY RESILIENT IN AN EMERGENCY?

We want our communities to be better equipped to deal with local emergencies such as severe weather, including having the resources and information to protect themselves and their properties.

Our aim is to develop resilient communities within our area by working with local community groups to bring about this change.

We will do this by:

• raising awareness of self-help

• helping communities to develop plans that are mindful of nearby flood plains and access issues in adverse weather conditions

• develop an effective household pack

• provide alert information to residents

For further information please contact the Environmental Health, Risk and Emergency Planning Service Unit on 028 9244 7397.

In an emergency always phone 999. They will supply instructions and tell you of the nearest defibrillator if appropriate.

However, you can familiarise yourself with those found in areas you often work, visit or play.

Defibfinder is a website with up-to-date information on defibrillator (AED) locations across the UK. At www.defibfinder.uk/ enter your location to find your nearest defibrillators. It will list those closest to your home, sports club, business, school or community.

When you click on the defibrillator icons you can see further information such as availability, access information and directions.

An AED is a sophisticated, reliable, safe, computerised device that delivers a controlled electric shock to treat victims who experience a cardiac arrest.

YOUR
FIND
CLOSEST DEFIBRILLATOR Anyone could suffer from a cardiac incident. This is why it is important to be familiar with how to find your closest defibrillator. Your quick action could save a life.

D-DAY 80 COMMEMORATIONS IN LISBURN

IT IS ILLEGAL TO SELL VAPES TO UNDER 18S

Some may say vaping has ‘become a trend’ as e-cigarettes are very popular. With the wide range of flavours available, we are unfortunately seeing a new generation of young people who have never smoked becoming addicted to nicotine.

A total of 9% of local 11-16 year olds now vape, compared to 6% in 2019. Research shows that 24% of Year 12 pupils are now vaping.

would encourage all vape retailers to consider the following:

Join us on Thursday 6 June for a day of commemorative events to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. From ‘sun up to sun down’ you can enjoy our varied programme to let you discover what life was really like in 1944.

These are stark numbers, as it is ILLEGAL to sell vapes to anyone under the age of 18. There are potentially significant consequences for both the retailers and the individual who sold the vapes from the premises.

• introduce a ‘No ID, No Sale’ or ‘Challenge 21/25’ and make sure staff follow it

• do regular staff training to assess staff knowledge on their responsibilities

Auction https://www.freemove.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/eir-evo-white.png

Mayor Gowan said: “It is important we remember why D-Day is such a significant date. D-Day altered the course of history and was the beginning of the end of World War 2. In commemorating this day, we remember those brave men and women who sacrificed so much for peace. We must remember them. From schools and community groups to families and veterans our programme has something for you to enjoy.”

Showcasing the importance to commemorate D-Day 80 are: Alderman Hazel Legge, D-Day 80 Working Group Chair; Mayor Councillor Andrew Gowan and Councillor Thomas Beckett, Communities and Wellbeing Chairman along with members of the Atlas Centre.

To both safeguard our young people and ensure the law is followed in our area, we conduct regular test purchasing in local retailers. We want to spotcheck compliance with the age restrictions.

For the protection of everyone, we

• consider till prompts to ensure staff follow their requirement to question the age of young people

• keep records of occasions whenstaff have refused sales, often referred to as a refusal register

Our Environmental Health Team/Tobacco Control Office can supply sample registers to retailers on request. We can be emailed at ehealth@lisburncastlereagh.gov.uk

READY, STEADY - PARKRUN!

parkrun has proved to be a really popular initiative and we have five routes in our area. These are fun, free events which are run by volunteers. Two are for younger residents and three are for all ages.

Remember: parkruns use shared paths so please be considerate towards other users when taking part.

To get involved, all you need to do is sign up and bring the barcode you’ll be sent to each session. Don’t forget you can walk the route if you need to or take part in a structured training programme with the parkrun organisers to set your ‘personal best’.

Sign up and get your barcode here www.parkrun.org.uk/register/?section=form

Lough Moss Junior parkrun

Our younger residents (aged four to 14 years old) can take part in the weekly 2-kilometre parkrun for juniors. It is held at Lough Moss Leisure Centre every Sunday at 9.30am.

We work with local groups, agencies and organisations to improve the mental and physical health, as well as the wellbeing, of our residents.

Our newest 5k-parkrun in Hillsborough Forest takes place each Saturday morning at 9.30am. Participants will run two laps of the figure of eight course of forest trails to clock up their five kilometres.

Moira Junior parkrun

Another one for our younger residents (aged four to 14 years old). This weekly 2-kilometre parkrun for juniors is held in Moira Demesne every Sunday at 9.30am.

Knockbracken Reservoir parkrun

There’s also a parkrun every Saturday around Knockbracken Reservoir (9.30am, Mealough Road, Carryduff). The course is entirely on tarmac paths - although watch out for mud, leaves and puddles on some sections of the course which can accumulate after rain.

And last but by no means least is the most established parkrun, in Wallace Park. It takes place on a Saturday morning at 9.30am, with the course entirely on tarmac paths.
