MAYOR’S WELCOME

Welcome to the very first digital edition of CityWide. Accessing the magazine online means you’ll get lots of additional features – but it’s still a great read if you prefer to pick up a hard copy from your local library or community centre. It’s that time of year again and I know as Mayor, I’m looking forward to attending some festive events across the council area. From the light festivals to skating with Santa, there’s bound to be something special you can enjoy with your loved ones this Christmas too. For all the details, check out our programme on pages 4-5 and the ‘what’s on’ guide on pages 8-9. Christmas brings joy to many but for those who are ill and for their families, it can be a time of worry and uncertainty. And so during December, I’ll be holding a series of festive fundraisers for my Mayoral charity, Cancer Fund for Children (CFC). I know I can count on your generous support for the great work CFC does - so please keep an eye on our social media pages for more details.

GIVE PRE-LOVED TOYS A SECOND CHANCE Following the success of last year’s Christmas Toy Scheme, we’re excited to be partnering with Habitat for Humanity again to help more families in our council area buy quality, affordable toys for their children this festive season. If your children have outgrown their toys, don’t just throw them away. Instead, why not donate gently used, pre-loved toys to our Christmas Toy Scheme? Toys can be left at the following dedicated drop-off points between Wednesday 1st November and Wednesday 13th December:

(L-R) Jenny Williams, Chief Executive of Habitat for Humanity Northern Ireland; Councillor Caleb McCready, Chair of Environment and Sustainability Committee and Niall McConkey, Manager of ReStore Lisburn.

•

The Cutts Household Recycling Centre

•

Carryduff Household Recycling Centre

•

Habitat Restore, Lisburn

•

Ballyoran Community Centre

•

Maghaberry Community Centre

The donated toys will then be sorted, displayed and sold at affordable prices to local families in the Christmas Toy Shop at Habitat ReStore Lisburn from Wednesday 15th November to Monday 18th December - as well as a small number of local pop-up shops.

CHRISTMAS FOOD SAFETY Feasting with family is all part of the holiday celebrations. But many homes are visited by uninvited guests you may be unaware of – food poisoning bacteria! Here’s our top tips on how to cook up a storm this Christmas while keeping your food and family safe.

Buying your bird

Defrosting

Cooking

If you’re buying a fresh bird, buy it as late as possible before you plan to cook it. Bring it home quickly and store it in the fridge. Cook it no later than two days after buying it.

The safest way to defrost a bird is in the fridge. Place the bird on the bottom shelf and make sure it cannot drip onto any other foods. Allow for around 10 to12 hours per kg or 5 hours per lb.

If you buy a frozen bird, put it in your freezer until you’re ready to defrost it.

If defrosting the bird in a cool room, then allow three to four hours per kg or two hours per lb.

Raw meat may contain bacteria such as salmonella, which can cause severe illness. Adequate cooking kills these bacteria but cooking a turkey, chicken, goose or game can be risky if it isn’t done properly.

Remember: The Food Standards Agency says do not wash raw turkey before cooking. Washing raw meat spreads germs onto your hands, clothes, utensils and worktops. Thorough cooking will kill any bacteria present.

Tip: The bird is defrosted and ready for cooking when the body is soft, the legs can be moved easily and there are no ice crystals inside. Keep it in the fridge if you’re not going to cook it immediately.

Tip: If you’re using a meat thermometer or a temperature probe, check that the internal temperature of the meat reaches 75oC for 30 seconds or 80oC for 6 seconds. The temperature should be taken at the thickest portion of the food. In a whole bird, this is the area between the leg and the breast.

CHRISTMAS SAFETY TIPS This Christmas, make sure you’re doing all you can to keep your home and family safe.

•

Toys

Candles • • •

• • • •

Keep candles away from curtains, cards, furniture, your Christmas tree, decorations and wrapping. Never leave them unattended. Keep candles out of the reach of children and away from pets.

•

Christmas decorations

•

Use a stepladder when decorating the tree and putting up your decorations – inside and out. Babies and toddlers are fascinated by Christmas trees. Make sure your tree is securely fastened so they can’t pull it down. Electricals should have the British or European safety mark on them. If yours don’t, make it a priority to buy some that do and recycle your old ones. Replace Christmas lights if they show signs of being faulty.

Remember to switch off both indoor and outdoor lights at bedtime or when leaving the house.

•

Make sure you look for the CE or CE UKNI marking when choosing toys. Visit RoSPA if you aren’t sure what these are www.rospa.com/home-safety Be vigilant and explain to older children the dangers of accidents that can happen when young toddlers and babies play with their older siblings’ toys. Batteries are extremely dangerous if swallowed. Make sure they are safely secured with a screw fitting. We have great home safety tips to protect children and older or vulnerable adults. PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT IN LISBURN CASTLEREAGH

WHATEVER YOU’RE FACING, A SAMARITAN WILL FACE IT WITH YOU During 2022, over 600 people in Northern Ireland volunteered their time to Samaritans. • NI volunteers answered more than 115,000 calls for help. • These calls totalled 30,000 hours. • Nearly half of these calls related to mental health. We recently installed a specially-designed bench at Lagan Valley Island, Lisburn as part of a council initiative to provide an area of reflection for friends and families bereaved through suicide. A number of local charities consulted with us on the project, including Samaritans, and we hope that it will provide a place of some solace for those who are grieving.

Councillor Ross McLernon, Chair of Governance and Audit Committee.

Through our Performance Improvement Plan for 23/24 we will deliver our priorities to enhance our services and the quality of life for all. This will be achieved by improving engagement opportunities and accessibility. By the end of March 2024 we aim to have: · · ·

NEW SUSTAINABLE REFILL STORE HITS LISBURN CITY CENTRE

COUNCIL ADOPTS FIRST LOCAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Located in Market Square, Lisburn, Sonas is the first ever refill store and café to come to Lisburn and Castlereagh.

(L-R) Alderman Martin Gregg, Chair of Planning Committee and Councillor John Laverty BEM, Chair of Regeneration and Growth Committee.

The council has adopted its first Local Development Plan strategy, a 15-year framework which explains how our city will grow and change between now and 2032. Councillor John Laverty BEM, Chair of the council’s Regeneration and Growth Committee said: “The area plan demonstrates how we want to create a healthy and prosperous city, in line with our Community Plan. “Our plans work together to improve the wellbeing of those who live or work here – while attracting visitors and investors.”

(L-R) Julie Hoey, Co-founder and Rachael Gilpin, Assistant Manager of Sonas.

Sonas (which is Gaelic for “happiness”) is redefining the local grocery store experience by ditching the plastic and serving customers top quality, organic handpicked produced from local sources. Lisburn Co-founder, Julie Hoey, said: “Our commitment to sustainability drives every decision we make and we’re encouraging others to say goodbye to overbuying and wastefulness.” She continued: “We're big on refillable and packagingfree products. At Sonas, you can save money by getting exactly what you need. Fill up your own containers or borrow from us and enjoy better, tastier food.” Sonas benefitted from the council’s Urban Investment Fund and Heritage Shopfront Scheme, which provided funding to help refurbish the shop and bring signage inline with conservation guidelines.

The plan has six themes we want to build on: A Quality Place: Linking with our Community Plan, we will ensure development proposals are in the right places. We want to see over 12,000 new homes built including affordable housing. A Thriving Place: Our location provides investment prospects to support job opportunities close to where people live. We have identified key employment and development locations across the city. A Vibrant Place: We can realise the potential of our city and town centres through a mix of shopping, employment, office development and leisure/community uses. An Attractive Place: Tourism is a key growth area for our city. Our new state-of-the-art facility at Dundonald International Ice Bowl will be the only one of its kind in Northern Ireland, just like Hillsborough Castle.

help you with your business go to

A Green Place: We will safeguard our rich variety of historic and natural heritage assets for future generations to maintain the distinctiveness and attractiveness of the area.

A Connected Place: We support a quality integrated transport network from ports and airports as well as more sustainable transport modes along strategic greenways.

Alderman Martin Gregg, Chair of the council's Planning Committee added: “I look forward to presiding over the implementation of the new Local Development Plan. I particularly welcome the ambitious 20% affordable housing target to meet the growing needs of our population. The plan brings clarity to the much contested residential development in rural areas. It creates huge opportunities, specifically in West Lisburn, by changing this formally designated employment land to mixed-use.”

A WEEK OF VITALITY MEMBERSHIP Vitality Membership is a great way to keep active and have fun – no matter what your age or stage of life! Don’t believe us? Read how this Lisburn family use their Vitality Household Membership to the max and make fun memories every single week of the year.

Krystal and Neil Anderson, along with their three children, Ethan (12), Sophie (9) and Chloe (7) have been Vitality Members for more than a year. Krystal says: “As a family, we’re trying to be more active and feel that the Vitality Household Membership allows us to do that, without costing a fortune. All the kids have the opportunity to try out lots of different sports and then attend their favourite classes. “Neil and I also find it so much easier to book classes via the Vitality Member App than pay for a monthly gym membership, something we did in the past but then never used.” (L-R) Neil, Chloe, Sophie, Ethan and Krystal Anderson at Lagan Valley LeisurePlex.

Here’s what their average weeks looks like: Monday Ethan and the girls attend dodgeball at Lagan Valley LeisurePlex in the afternoon. Krystal said: “After a day of sitting in school, I love that they have the chance to enjoy some exercise and have fun before starting homework. They all sleep much better on a Monday night as well!”

Tuesday Neil usually books a squash court with one of his friends for a 40-minute session at Lagan Valley LeisurePlex or nearby Lough Moss Leisure Centre.

Wednesday All the kids enjoy basketball at Grove Activity Centre on Wednesday evenings (where there are two different age groups to choose from), while Krystal attends Aquafit in Lagan Valley LeisurePlex. Sometimes they mix it up and all head for some archery at Kilmakee Activity Centre instead.

Thursday Neil takes the kids to play 60 minutes of pickleball at Lagan Valley LeisurePlex.

Vitality Members can enjoy one free session per day as part of their membership.

Friday On a Friday, the kids head to youth club or the Family Fun Session at Grove Activity Centre if they aren’t too tired from a busy week at school. Family Fun Sessions are available at Lough Moss Leisure Centre, Glenmore Activity Centre, Grove Activity Centre and Kilmakee Activity Centre.

Saturday and Sunday On some weekends, Krystal, Neil and the kids enjoy a trip to Lagan Valley LeisurePlex for a family swim session in the Leisure Pool. Krystal says: “Everyone loves the lazy river! Once a month, we will also meet up with some of Sophie and Chloe's friends and head to Dundonald International Ice Bowl to go ice skating followed by tenpin bowling. Or, as a family, we all enjoy bowling and then take the kids to Indiana Land so Neil and I can have a rest and a cuppa.” She continued, "The girls love the Xtreme Bowling Sessions and often perform their favourite songs and have a singalong at the DJ station. The kids love that they get a wee

treat for their performances from the DJ!” Neil says: “Having all these activities as part of our Vitality Membership saves us a fortune - meaning we can head out and enjoy a family meal afterwards. That’s a real treat in these harder economic times and gives us both a day off cooking! “The staff and coaches are always so helpful at all the sessions and centres. Several of our friends are also members so, when the kids are off school and it’s raining outside, we meet up and the kids enjoy a class together while the parents get a cuppa and have a catch up.” Vitality Members can enjoy an extensive range of activities, classes and courses to suit adults and children of all ages. It’s the perfect option for anyone planning a family day out. As a member, you can enjoy free classes and sessions at all of the council’s leisure facilities including Lagan Valley LeisurePlex, Dundonald International Ice Bowl, Lough Moss Leisure Centre, Glenmore, Grove and Kilmakee Activity Centres and Billy Neill MBE Country Park. Also included in the membership package are Mission Inflatable, lane swimming, racquet sports and the health suite.

Our Vitality Household Membership is £49 per month for up to 2 adults and 5 children living in the same household. Individual membership rates and a range of concession packages are also available. For more information go to www.theleisureplex.com/vitality-membership. 14

NEW DIGITAL SCULPTURE TRAIL IN ROYAL HILLSBOROUGH Grab your wellies and an inquisitive mind and set off for Hillsborough Forest and its newly-opened digital sculpture trail.

GUESS HOW MUCH WE LOVE LISBURN? Lisburn’s new Guess How Much I Love You trail has proved to be a first–class visitor attraction for the city.

Councillor Thomas Beckett, Chair of Communities and Wellbeing Committee.

The trail was inspired by the world-famous children’s picture book, "Guess How Much I Love You", written by lifelong resident of Lisburn Sam McBratney and illustrated by Anita Jeram.

Gyasi Sheppy, CBeebies Presenter with some of the pupils from Downshire Primary School in Hillsborough who attended the launch.

You’ll find that the forest is now home to 10 dramatic, large-scale sculptures - enhanced by an augmented reality app (accessible via smartphones). This app will take you on a journey through the forest, leading you from one sculpture to the next and providing an exciting and interactive experience for visitors of all ages. At the start of the trail, you’ll meet the 25-foot-tall ‘Peep the Hare’ before moving on to ‘Ssssh’, who is 40 feet in length! There is also an interactive play space where children can have their photos taken inside and around these giant animals.

Another sculpture is called ‘Power Up’. It’s an interactive motion sculpture where visitors can power LED lights by cycling or using hand pedals. ‘Unit of Life’ is a cube made of Fibonacci-related shapes. Nearby are the ‘The Poet’ and ‘Magic Garden’ sculptures, which you can also take time to explore and enjoy. Once you complete the trail, you’ll be rewarded with a range of discounts in the nearby village of Royal Hillsborough. It might be a treat at one of its award-winning restaurants, an offer at one of the cafés or maybe even a little retail therapy.

Using the app, you can also follow the Royal Hillsborough Village Trail and discover the unspoiled secrets and the history of this beautiful village. Scan the QR code to download the app

We recommend downloading the app before arriving at the forest.

Two self-led digital trails now animate the city centre and local parks where you can view a beautiful bronze sculpture, benches and brass rubbing plaques depicting images from the book. You can even hear the story read aloud by the author himself! Situated in Sam’s home town, the trail is a lasting legacy to the success of a book that has sold more than 55 million copies worldwide, and been translated into 57 languages. Throughout 2024, we will launch a number of pop-up events featuring ‘Guess-themed’ performances, illustration and arts workshops to complement the trails, along with education talks for schools. In the meantime, the app is available for download from Google and Apple stores entitled ‘Guess trail’. For more information go to www.lisburncastlereagh.gov. uk/guess-how-much-i-love-you-trail
