The Syracuse PAL 2024 baseball league focused on our young people learning the fundamentals and mechanics of baseball. Through dedicated coaching, young players developed their skills in hitting, pitching, fielding, and base running. Our league allowed the youth to build meaningful connections with local law enforcement officers and community members! At Syracuse PAL we know that sports play a crucial role in teaching youth about the importance of being part of something greater than themselves. The lessons learned on the baseball field, like teamwork, discipline, leadership, and perseverance are invaluable and transferable to various aspects of their lives!
In the Syracuse PAL 2024 Culinary Program, our chefs learned safe ways to cut our food, learned about locally grown produce, and mastered the safe use of cooking equipment—all while having fun! We want to thank Plum & Mule, Brady Farm, and all of our Syracuse PAL community for making this awesome program possible.
In Week 2 of the program, we made pasta from scratch and used sauce from John Tumino's In My Father's Kitchen, with proceeds helping to fight homelessness in Syracuse.
The Syracuse PAL 2024 soccer league was a great way for our youth to learn the fundamentals and mechanics of soccer through structured practices including skills and drills. Participants later got to showcase what they learned in their games! Our soccer league has given the youth the opportunity to make connections with their peers, law enforcement, and community partners.
Our Flag Football League has had another successful year! The league included both girls and boys and honed in on football fundamentals, skills, drills, and games. The teens were taught the rules of flag football while having fun and making connections with their peers and law enforcement.
We want to thank all of the law enforcement, partners and volunteers who have helped Syracuse PAL have another successful Flag Football League. Thank you to the SCSD for partnering with us on using PSLA @ Fowler football field.
Syracuse Police Athletic/Activities League introduced a groundbreaking Literacy & Basketball Program for children ages 5-12 to address the literacy gap in the Syracuse community. The reading proficiency score in New York State is 63%, however in the SCSD that score is only 26%. By integrating an incentive of basketball after focusing on literacy activities participants were encouraged. The program aimed to motivate young participants to develop reading and writing habits that will enhance their literacy skills.
Our team attended CNY Rise’s 7th Annual Public Service Award Dinner. They honored Syracuse PAL and our director of Community Engagement, Jimmy Oliver, for his service and dedication to this community. Jimmy’s passion for the youth and community were honored by the CNY Rise team. Our Marketing and Communications Director, Adonia Wade, accepted the award on Jimmy’s behalf because he was attending one of our PAL youth’s moving up ceremony, which is a testament to his character. We want to thank Tim Saka and everyone at CNY Rise for this award and recognition.
Syracuse PAL partnered with Nottingham High School to host a soccer game with Nottingham High School Alumni and volunteers from the Syracuse Police Department and other law enforcement volunteers. It was a fun night filled with friendly competition and making connections within our city! We want to thank Nottingham High School and all of the law enforcement volunteers for making this possible.
Mayor Walsh and Deputy Mayor Owens have announced significant Congressional funding to expand Syracuse PAL programs to include teenagers aged 14 to 18. This expansion aims to foster positive relationships between law enforcement, youth, and families in our community and allows Syracuse PAL to continue working as a vessel into their young adult years. We want to give a special thanks to Senator Schumer, Senator Gillibrand and Congressman Williams for their support in making this initiative possible!
The Syracuse PAL Inaugural Awards Ceremony was held Saturday June 1, 2024 and was truly a testament to Syracuse PAL and its effect on our community! It was a privilege to commemorate two remarkable years of our motto “Kids, Cop, Communities” alongside the exceptional individuals who embody the passion of Syracuse PAL and enrich our community. From the courageous law enforcement heroes to the devoted Syracuse PAL families, your dedication has truly made a positive impact.
We extend our deepest gratitude to all who contributed to the success of this event, including The Preserve, Francesca’s in Liverpool, Danny Leidka, Visit Syracuse, the dedicated volunteers from Law Enforcement, the City of Syracuse Staff, and numerous others who generously gave their time and effort. A special acknowledgment goes to our committee members including Joseph Torrillo, Laiza Semidey, Barry Weiss, Adonia Wade, Abigail Jones, Ron Bianchi, Garrett Lyons, Daniel Benson, and Ben Gruber for their tireless commitment. Let’s continue to lift each other up, nurture our youth, and foster positive relationships between law enforcement and our community. Here is to many more years of Syracuse PAL!
