SOUTH EL MONTE CITY COUNCIL APPOINTS NEW CITY MANAGER
The South El Monte City Council is pleased to appoint Rene Salas to serve our community as its new permanent City Manager.
The City Council unanimously selected Salas and approved his appointment during the January 24, 2023, regular City Council meeting. The South El Monte City Council’s unanimous vote reflect their confidence in Mr. Salas to operate the City with accountability, vision, collaboration and transparency for the betterment of the community and staff.
“We welcome Rene Salas as our new City Manager. He has done a tremendous job in communicating with staff, the public and all City Councilmembers. He is the first one in and the last one out each day at City Hall. He is committed to his new position and has been a breath of fresh air with his professionalism and willingness to move South El Monte forward in a positive aspect . We are very thankful that he accepted this challenge,” said one City Official.
Salas began his career with the City of South El Monte in 2017 as the Public Works Director overseeing the Engineering and Public Works Department. Salas was then temporary assigned to oversee Community Development overseeing various departments including Economic Development, Housing, Planning, Building and Safety, and Code Enforcement. In September of 2020, Salas was promoted to Deputy City Manager overseeing the Recreation and Senior Divisions, Public Safety and Homeless Services. He had been serving as Interim City Manager since July 2022.
Prior to joining the City of South El Monte, Salas worked for 15 years in various cities as the Public Works Director including a couple years as the General Manager for a Community Services Water District in Paso Robles, California. Salas also has 12 years of experience working for Sempra Energy International, the parent company of Southern California Gas Company and San Diego Gas and Electric. For two of these years, Salas worked and lived in the countries of Uruguay and Argentina working on natural gas pipeline networks.
“I’d like to thank the Mayor and City Council for appointing me as City Manager. I’m honored and humbled. I can say proudly that South El Monte is a great place to work. The staff is amazing and dedicated to providing excellent community programs, safe road improvements, clean parks, and friendly planning/building services for the community and meeting the goals of the City Council,” said Salas.

Gather enough personal needs like food, water, and medical supplies, to last your family, including pets, at least 3 days. Make a first-aid kit that includes gloves, a thermometer, waterproof bandages, and antibiotic cream. Talk to your doctor and your pet’s veterinarian about creating an emergency supply of prescription medicines. Collect and protect important paperwork, such as insurance cards and personal identification. Prepare for power outages with backup and alternative lighting and power sources, such as flashlights and a power bank for your cellphone. Learn, practice, and teach others important practical skills, such as frequent handwashing, that can protect your health in an emergency. When soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol to keep hands clean. Prepare for everywhere—your home, work, and vehicles—because emergencies can happen anywhere. For more information visit: www.cdc.gov/prepyourhealth ARE YOU PREPARED? Carry household disinfecting wipes to kill germs on frequently touched surfaces. HANDSANITIZER DISINFECTANT WIPES Have multiple, well-fitting masks for everyone ages 2 and older. Know and follow the masking recommendations and requirements of your state and local health departments. CAT FOOD DRIED FRUIT Baby Wipes Know how to turn off your gas, electricity, and water. Attach a valve wrench and label to your water line. Secure water heater with a wide metal strap around the top attached to wall studs. Anchor items into the wall studs. DROP to your hands and knees, COVER your head and neck, and HOLD ON to your shelter until shaking stops. Stop quickly and safely, set the parking brake, and stay in the car until the shaking stops. Secure bookcases and shelves. If you are outside, stay outside and move away from buildings, utility wires, sinkholes, and fuel and gas lines. Stay away from utility poles, overhead wires, and under/overpasses. Place heavy or large objects on lower shelves. Include important documents in your emergency kit. Get down low and stay there until the shaking stops. Check your chimney and roof and repair loose tiles and bricks. Be Ready! Earthquakes Public Health Preparedness and Response Office of the Director Pet Preparedness A significant number of families have pets and they’re part of the family. They need to be ready for a disaster too; take simple steps now so they’re prepared. How to Prepare Before a Disaster Not all shelters will accept pets, plan in advance for shelter options that will work for both you and your pets. Develop a buddy system with neighbors or friends to make sure that someone is available to care for your pets if you are unable to do so. Assemble an emergency kit for your pet. What Goes in Your Pet Emergency Kit: Food and water (3 days) bowls, manual can opener Medicines, medical records, and first aid kit Collar with ID tag, harness, or leash (include backups) Crate or pet carrier A picture of you and your pet together Important documents: registration & vaccination Familiar items: favorite toys, treats, and bedding Plastic bags/litter for cleaning up after your pet What to Do During a Disaster Bring your pet inside immediately. Separate dogs and cats. Anxiety may affect their behavior. Feed them moist or canned food so they will need less water to drink. Have extra newspapers, for sanitary reasons.
