Diaz captured the champion title and belt on Thursday, February 6th after defeating Philadelphia’s Tevin Farmer via unanimous decision with the scores of 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113.

“The City of South El Monte is beyond proud of JoJo Diaz! He is an inspiration to our youth and a product of our successful South El Monte Boxing Program,” said one City Official.

The South El Monte Boxing Program was created in 1991 by former professional boxer Ben Lira, for our community’s youth. The program teaches participants the basic fundamentals of boxing, discipline, exercise; and helps them develop strength and self-confidence.

Lira, who continues to oversee the program recalls Diaz coming in as a young kid with a great commitment and overwhelming skill level for boxing. “JoJo Diaz’s IBF Junior Lightweight World Champion title is the result of many years of hard work, preparation and dedication by Jojo,” said Lira.

A victory parade and rally will take place on Saturday, March 7th. The parade will begin 10:30 a.m. at Michael Hunt Dr. and Santa Anita Ave. and conclude at South El Monte City Hall at the corner of Santa Anita Ave. and Central Ave. Join us at the parade and receive a Free “JoJo” t-shirt, while supplies last.

Following the victory rally, the festivities will continue with the South El Monte 2020 Census Kickoff Festival and Car Show at City Hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The special event will feature live youth performances, a kids fun zone, interactive booths and raffle prizes.

2020 CENSUS

The 2020 Census is accessible for everyone.

We’re making sure that however you choose to respond—online, by phone, or by mail—that the census is accessible. You’ll receive an invitation to respond beginning in mid-March. You choose how you want to respond.

You can respond online in English or in 12 additional languages. The online questionnaire is accessible, following the latest web accessibility guidelines.

We’ll also have a video in American Sign Language available to guide you through responding online.

You can respond by phone in English or in 12 additional languages. You can also respond in English by TDD at 844-467-2020.

By mid-April, we’ll mail a paper questionnaire to every household that hasn’t already responded. (Some households will receive a paper questionnaire along with the first invitation in March.)

We’ll have braille and large print guides available online to assist you with completing the paper questionnaire.

If necessary, you can respond in person beginning in mid-May. Census takers will visit all households that have not yet responded.

Why We Ask YOUR RESPONSES TO THE 2020 CENSUS ARE SAFE.

SEX

We ask about the sex of each person to create statistics about males and females. Census data about sex are used in planning and funding government programs, and in evaluating other government programs and policies to ensure they fairly and equitably serve the needs of males and females. These statistics are also used to enforce laws, regulations, and policies against discrimination in government programs and in society.

The census asks questions that provide a snapshot of the nation. Census results affect your voice in government, how much funding your community receives, and how your community plans for the future.

When you fill out the census, you help: • Determine how many seats your state gets in Congress.

AGE AND DATE OF BIRTH

• Guide how more than $675 billion in federal funding is distributed to states and communities each year.

We ask about age and date of birth to understand the size and characteristics of different age groups and to present other data by age. Local, state, tribal, and federal agencies use age data to plan and fund government program that provide assistance or services for specific age groups, such as children, working-age adults, women of childbearing age, or the older population. These statistics also help enforce laws, regulations, and policies against age discrimination in government programs and in society.

• Create jobs, provide housing, prepare for emergencies, and build schools, roads and hospitals.

RELATIONSHIP

We ask about the relationship of each person in a household to one central person to create estimates about families, households, and other groups.

Relationship data are used in planning and funding government programs that provide funds or services for families, people living or raising children alone, grandparents living with grandchildren, or other households that qualify for additional assistance.

NAME

We ask for names to ensure everyone in the house is counted. Listing the name of each person in the household helps respondents include all members, particularly in large households where a respondent may forget who was counted and who was not.

Safety and Security Your responses to the 2020 Census are safe.

Your responses to the 2020 Census are protected by law. Under Title 13 of the U.S. Code, the U.S. Census Bureau cannot release any information that identifies you individually. Every Census Bureau employee and contractor is sworn for life to always protect your information. Violating that oath carries stiff penalties for all Census Bureau workers — a fine up to $250,000 and/or up to five years in prison.

The Census Bureau uses your information for statistical purposes only, such as helping to inform decisions for new hospitals, schools and roads.

Responses to the 2020 Census are secure.

The Census Bureau has a team of cybersecurity experts who monitor and protect all agency technology around the clock. Our cybersecurity meets the highest standards for protecting your information. From the moment we collect your responses, our goal — and legal obligation — is to keep them safe. The Census Bureau’s technology is protected by strong authentication and authorization methods and is fully “locked down” so that it can only be accessed by fully vetted individuals who are trained in data and cyber security. Valle Lindo School District

PARENT WORKSHOP: SELF CARE FOR PARENTS Recently, the Valle Lindo School District in partnership with Pacific Clinics presented the first in a series of workshops for parents. Valle Lindo Social Worker, Emily Guerra, LCSW, introduced the workshop and thanked the VLSD Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) for sponsoring the event and providing refreshments.

This first workshop, titled “Self Care for Parents”, focused on caregivers taking time for themselves in order to better serve their children. There were several activities and exercises led by George Gutierrez, Parenting Specialist of Pacific Clinics. One of the themes that continued throughout the workshop was kindness. Giving compliments to others including our children and encouraging them to do the same. Gutierrez led the group in an exercise that required the parents and caregivers to think about what they like about themselves. He told the attendees that parents don’t do this often enough. He reminded parents of the importance of taking time for themselves, even if it’s just setting aside an hour a week as a way to reset and feel a bit more relaxed and positive.

MOUNTAIN VIEW SCHOOL DISTRICT

STUDENTS AT COGSWELL SCHOOL ARE EXERCISING THEIR MINDS AND BODIES WITH THE DRUMFIT PROGRAM Cogswell Elementary School students are having fun learning and exercising their minds and bodies during DrumFit lessons led by their teachers. The DrumFit program is one of Mountain View School District’s many instructional and enrichment programs that provide a well-rounded education for students. DrumFit integrates music, rhythmic patterns and aerobic fitness in a fun and engaging form that all grade levels enjoy and is aligned with national Physical Education standards.

Teachers from schools throughout the District, including Cogswell teachers, Christina Munoz, Erin Lewis and Christina Alfonso, received training in the program and now are leading lessons at their school sites.

The fun, interactive and engaging group drumming routines also boost social emotional learning as they support self-awareness in a non-competitive and inclusive community atmosphere. DrumFit’s curriculum helps children to develop crucial life skills such as self-awareness, teamwork, empathy and the ability to take direction. Additionally, the cardio drumming routines are designed to increase heart rates and fitness levels leading to improved cognitive function and reduced stress.

According to Erin Lewis, Cogswell Special Day Class (SDC) teacher, DrumFit allows multi-ages and abilities to engage in active learning while developing hand-eye and cross body coordination that are necessary for reading and writing.

“My class of five grade levels of students participated with their P.E. buddies for full inclusion physical education and they loved every minute of it,” said Lewis. “They look forward to the DrumFit sessions and when they get to drum and dance again.”

In addition Cogswell School, Miramonte School and Monte Vista School, also located in South El Monte, have implemented the DrumFit program.
