PARTICIPATION IN THE 2020 CENSUS
Every ten years, the Census Bureau is required by the United States Constitution to conduct an accurate count of the Nation’s population. The census counts are a vital tool for a city to obtain federal funds for housing, health care, education and infrastructure. With the 2020 Census fast approaching, the City of South El Monte has launched the “You Count! Make South El Monte Count!” campaign to increase participation in South El Monte. “We want every resident to be counted in the once-every-decade census, so South El Monte can obtain it’s fair share of federal funds to be used for vital City programs,” said one City Official. “Our community’s participation in the 2020 Census, will help shape the future of South El Monte for the next 10 years.” South El Monte gets one opportunity each decade to count its population and the City’s goal is to ensure everyone is included in the 2020 Census. The public awareness campaign is designed to engage residents to participate in the census through a series of various promotional and community outreach activities. Furthermore, the City will have a special focus on residents who have traditionally not been counted in the census, especially in the Hard-To-Count (HTC) areas in South El Monte. To reach the HTC areas, the South El Monte Complete Count Committee comprised of city officials, residents, and other stakeholders from the community has been created to work collaboratively and increase awareness and motivate residents to respond to the 2020 Census. The Committee’s objectives are to: • Educate residents on the 2020 Census timeline and purpose with an emphasis on the HTC populations. • Identify HTC populations and best strategies to educate them on the 2020 Census. • Reduce the HTC populations’ fear and distrust of government. • Build trust around the 2020 Census. • Motivate HTC populations to participate in the 2020 Census.
