A group of lucky students this last summer got the incredible opportunity to go to Ecuador. They not only got to have an amazing adventure. but also got to serve a local community and build a school.

On the trip the group got to interact with the native peop le, swim with giant sea turtles and build a school for an outstanding community. Overall, the group said this trip was a life changing experience for them

hl Irrre.d ire Seflt to xe

Max also mentioned the incredible snorkeling adventure with sea lions and sea turtles When asked what the most amazing he saw was , he immediately began recounting this adventure He talked about the beautiful big vibrant coral reefs and the giant sea turtles floating all around them. In his opinion that was the most incredible sight they saw on the trip

Ivy Behr (10) joined the team because she loved music and she wanted to play drums the most. Ivy has been playing for one year now . The hardest part about learning to play for her was that the quads are really heavy and her back hurt sometimes because of it. Ivy liked just jamming a lot and playing really awesome tunes .

te2m wcrk

Luke Brunel (12) joined the drumline in his freshmen year. The hardest part about drumming for him was to keep focusing on it and being there for the music and not just for fun . He liked performing the most and felt close with the group while doing that. The coolest thing that had ever happened to Luke was during his junior year he and another girl from the team staged a fight during the homecoming assemb ly while everyone crowded around them . H e liked that part a lot. •

Ev ery Mo nd ay and Thursday from 6 to 8pm, ten students of Golden High School practiced drumming. They played bass, quad , and snare drums a long with cymbals . The team played during games and assemblies, but they did not participate in any competitions. Drumlin e was a ll about just having fun two times a week. They feel very connected when they are playing for the school and also feel bonded when they are s tr etc hing fo r practice. Sometimes they go out for something to eat o r o th er fun things after the long practice is over.

1nnor Lawren ce Smith (11) was originally attracted to joining the cheer team in order to hopefully earn a scholarship for college H e thought that as a male chee rleader it would be easy to earn these, but he learned over time that that is ot the case. T umbhng was the hardest thing for Tanner to learn, he honed his strength and abilities 1n order to learn that s kill He felt that c heerl eading was the most challenging sport he had learned.

Climbing club gives students the opportunity to fulfil their joy for climbing by meeting at Earth Treks several times a week It is a great opportunity fo r students to get back into climbing or to even create a new love for it. There is also the opportunity to ente r climbing competitions , there are six throughout the year T hey all have each other's backs literally and metaphorically Climbing club creates a great lea r ning atmosphere for novices due to the kindhearted members who are willing to give pointers and assist. Astronomy is one of the many science classes offered at Golden This earth science class is based on everything happening above our heads. Taught by Mr Christians , the class teaches skills that many people might overlook as part of the study of astronomy

LINK students were some of the heroes of Golden , especially towards the beginning of the year Headed by Mrs. Anderson , LINK was in charge of making sure the new students felt welcome, as well as assisted around the school with just about anything . LINK was comprised of upperclassmen with a strong passion for helping their younger counterparts . From Freshmen Orientation to door decorating for Trick or Treat street, LINK made sure that every student felt included throughout their transition to high school.

Awesome Anatomy

Codey Carr (11) is one of the many students that took astronomy this year. H e feels that , while astronomy is a science class , it feels much more like a college class in that it is more lecture based , which he feels makes the class very enjoyable •

Anatomy , taught by Mr. Thumim , was one of the most unique classes offered at Golden From study of the human body, to actually getting to look at one in the spring, anatomy covered a lot, especially in the realm of dissections! From cats , to sheep brains, to eyeballs, to tagging along on a professional cadaver study, this class does it all .

Student Council was a very important part of what the school does From organ121ng events like Homecoming 1 and all the additional events that week to every spirit week the school puts on throughout the many days of the school year This year , Student Council was much smaller than previous years compnsed of only about sixteen members which meant each one of them worked immensely hard to put together all the events during the course of the year. From Trick or Treat Street to the Prom Fashion sho'A- Student Council was responsible for many of the fun events students went to throughout the year As well as having a small amount of students Student Council also worked with new admin this year Mr Shellard and Ms Gese

The culinary program at Golden was a great place for students to gain experience and possibly even exciting new job options The program was designed to get kids ready to work in the real world in a real kitchen T hose students who take culinary all four years will have a great shot at getting a job in a full running kitchen In Culinary I they start with the basics and move their way up, just like any art form or sport. T his class taught many kids how to run and work in a professional cooking environment. Students who took these classes were pumped and ready for their upcoming culinary careers .

This years Fall show by Stage Right Productions was a double cast of She Kills Monsters a show all about what we experience everyday, high school. This show broadened the mind of every cast member as well as every member of tech Everyone grew as individuals and closer as a family By playing characters that they related to so heavily, a lot of the situations hit close to home It was great for the actors to experience their own lives from a different perspective Through the world of Dungeons and Dragons the cast got to experience a real shift within themselves

Now that we have reached the end of the semester the culinary kids are cleaning up after a really long and challenging few months Making learning, and creating is this classes motto and we all can't wait to see what they make next.

Sometimes directors choose to do what is called 'double casting' a sho"'-'· This means many of the rolls have two people playing the same part on different performances Being in a double cast is challenging as actors have about half the rehearsal time and t\vice the competition However , v.'ith Stage Right they learned to grov • from those challenges The t\l.•o casts really made an effort to give as much support and rehearsal time as they could . No one \.Vas left in the dust and they all ended \.vith an incredible sho\v.

The season was just starting to heat up for everyone in theater. Thescon 1s always a super exciting time of year , as well as upcoming Musical auditions. This year some of the students in the spnng will be going on a trip to Minneapolis. They will see show after show and soak in all the dramatic art the city has to offer.

IThis year , the mountain biking team had around seventy riders That is the most riders they have ever had! One of the major accomplishments as a child is learning how to r ide a bike. Most of us learn how to bike with training wheels , and then without! Over time we endure many scraped knees and bruises , but biking is worth the cost. This team took thei r biking experience to the next level! As we have seen through the H omecoming P arade , going to races and learning to do tricks , their talent is astonishing.

The most important part of a sport is the teamwork that everyone puts on the table in order to achieve a win! In order to do this , the team needs to take the form of a fam il y and be interconnected Even with their s eventy members , they are all very s upportive of each other and close

Aside fr om the fact that the mountain bike team had around seventy r ide rs , they were sti ll able to tak e a group photo with everyo n e included. IGrace desribed how having a job and being in volleyball has been a great challenge for her l mean who likes to balance a bunch of things with so little time? However , she says it makes her \Vant to play better Hard work and teamwork-that's what makes the game better she says . We all have to work together to make the team great but our hard work makes the game worthwhile

Rachel Brunel (10) first got into volleyball at the beginning of middle school. She even quit soccor because she thought volleyball would be way more fun As soon as she got to high school, volleyball really began to mean a lot and 1"ow she says it's one of her favonte activities outside of school She mentioned she might want to continue playing the game in college Ra chel and Grace hoth said that the team bonding activities really bring the team much closer together-like a little volleyball family

This year the team had a shme party as a bonding activity , and everyone got to know and understand each other much better. Last year they did similar parties that brought all the levels of volleyball together Sometimes being on a team and working with so many different skill levels can be a challenge, but this team makes 1t work

Elizabeth's expectations about high school came from a very popular movie at the time we were all growing up : High School Musical. She expected everyone to be in cliques and for all of it to be pretty dramatic She had learned that not everything is as we expect when we are kids She has been a part of many groups here at Golden including theater and choir High school might not be exactly like the movie but it's definitely a wild ride .

Mitchell describes high school very similarly in that everyone would be in groups and the actual school part wouldn't be as prominent as shown in movies . Yet, that is certainly not the case. High School is hard work and everyone is feeling the pressure yet it also is more open then any movie portrays

A lot of students here at Golden participate in activities outside the school Yes, extracurriculars . but also side projects that students have either just picked up or have been a part of for a long while. For example some of our students are writing their own music , creating animations. or even writing poetry. Students at Golden have a wide range of diversity of interests.

Choir was not just singing for many students. Through the pieces that the choirs choose for their concerts , there is often times choreography that must go with it to make the piece being performed truly unique . From simple steps to complex formations , the movement often makes these pieces come a liv e with extra energy Sometimes , these movements do not require the students to actually move , but use their bodies as tools to make other sounds with their hands and legs . All of this must be done while remembering notes and parts as well as watching Mrs Nickell so that the technical stuff comes together.

IChoir at GHS was a major part of the arts at the school. Comprising four choirs, four concerts, and many, many students, the choral music program is one of the best in the area! From students achieving places in All State Choir, to several choirs winning festivals throughout the year, the students in the program had much to be proud of this year, and much to look forward to in the coming yearsl

Despite the massive amounts of rehearsal >choral students only had one night to show their work to everyone who comes to see them , as well as the other choirs. Many students felt a lot of pressure to impress their peers in other cho irs with the work they've done .

At Golden High School there were lots of different math classes for - students to take. Th ere were Algebra , Geometry, Pr e-Calculous,

Calculous , Trig onometry, and Statistics classes among others. Th ere are always lots of students who are learning math , and these different ~--~~iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii.. levels help the students learn no matter what previous math skills they came to class with . Math is a subject best learned one step at a time, and Golden makes sure that every student has an opportunity to take .;;;;;;;;;;====== the right class for their own needs.

I . I I I I I I I
I
Megan Klane (12) is in Pre-Calculous. She had Mr. Dinzes for her math teacher She said she enjoys math a lot because it is a very cha llenging subject. and that working towards solving difficult problems is rewarding and fun once you are successful. She said she is pretty good at so lving logs and sin, cos, and tan Ta ylor Worsham (12) was in AP Calculous this year at Golden High School She liked learning math because math has only one solution to figure out, so when she solved the problem it felt cool and successful She said she is good at graphing things

Ian Messa (9) and Delaney Lingad {9) enjoyed forensics a lot because they felt like a part of a family They believed that learning forensics helped them I in their real hves , not just in their -chool subjects. Thev decided to join forensics because they -:iiscovered that it was an active competition where they could gain and show their speaking abilities . They can say for sure that the atmosphere within their GHS team was not competitive at all.

2018-2019 was the 56th yea r of Forensics at Golden High School The team had a reputation for regularly 4ualify1ng for the State Tournament in March and frequentl y qualifying for the National Tournament. In June 2018 four GHS students Emma Newson, Ab1gayle Post (12) M aia Songer (11) and Kayl ee Coffman (graduate) competed at Nationals In 2019, so far they have had two students who qualified for Nationals, Abigayl e P ost (12) and Codey Carr (11) Forensics was unique in that 1t was a c la ss a c lub , and a team all 1n one

F amily Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is an activity where kids get to compete with other kids in real world activities based around skills such as cooking and hospitality. It works alongside the Fa mily and Consumer Science (FA CS) programs and classes , taught by Mrs Lawhorn and Mrs Th omson Th ese classes help better prepare the students of Golden Hi gh School for the difficult tasks that they'll have to deal with when they enter into their early adulthood .

"Jim a part o f the World of Work program where students get to both attend school for parts of the day , then go to their respective jobs I work at the Marriot Ho tel where I am cu rrently a Junior Chef. T his is a great class for those who excel more at hands-on work then they do behind a desk 11

(11)

Ryan Kowitz is a senior who is a part of the World of Work Program and says that "My average Monday is pretty different from most other people's I wake up bright and early at 7 :1 5 , go to my classes then leave in the midd le of the day for my job at the DJ store in Arvada where I help with vinyls and other things "

Foo d in Golden is obviously very important to high schoo lers

From fast food like Taco Bell , Sonic, and M c D o nald' s, to more local places like Woody's, Bob's Atomic Burgers , and Halu Sushi many students often go off campus for lunch to one of the many restaurants surrounding the high school with th ei r fr iends almost every day!

The students of Golden High School have a lot more to fear than just an upcoming test 1 These students showed us the shocking amount of scary things that keep them on thir toes 1 "I'm afraid of boats 'cause I went boating at a camp when I was a kid and the boat capsized needless to say I' m not the greatest swimmer 'said Mercedes Ohlen (12) '' I'm afraid of the ocean " said sophomore Gentry Keener "The Moon scares me ' said Senior Justin Meyer "I'm scared of spiders " said Freshman Nora Libbo "So am 11'' said Sophomore student Anna Seibert "No wait that's a he , don't put that in the yearbook "

NHS is a club whose active presence at GHS creates enthusiasm for scholarship, helps to exemplify strong character and encourages demonstrating constructive leadership within the school. They practiced getting involved in the community by doing lots of different community service activities, such as tutoring at elementary schools and middle schools, working at the J effco Action Center and working for people who need help. To be in NHS, students have to keep their GPA up and they have to fill thirty-two hours of community service per year.

Benjamin Idler (11) joined NHS because he wanted to get involved in the school more , and NHS allows students the opportunity to get involved not only in their school but within their communities By having lots of community projects. he meets many different people and makes connections NHS students are going out individually to get involved within their community and school by working events such as the PTA chili Cook-off the Golden Gallop and even helping at the local food banks

Kendall Wetch (1 1 ) also joined NHS to get more involved within the school. It is a great group of people who are like-minded and want to succeed in school She loves meeting new people Since she got involved in a variety of projects from elementary schools to large scale community events. she got the opportunity to make connections with people she wouldn't have met otherwise She helps out Shelton and Welchester Elementary teachers by tutoring. as well as spending time tutoring in the Demon Den on a weekly basis

II '

Hana Kim's (9) parents are Korean but they moved to the United States shortly before she was born She learned Korean first and she speaks Korean with her parents at home, which is why she is in the ESL class in Golden, but she is already very fluent speaking and writing English She said that she did not have a hard time learning English because she was born here, but she is having fun in ESL class and she gets lots of help increasing her English skills.

Fiorella Bona (11 ) is from Ecuador She started learning English when she was in 9th grade She wanted to study here , and at first it was so hard for her to follow the classes. but through ESL. the curriculum helped her increase her English abilities.
