Th e Golden Demons, under the competent coaching of l\ lark Eaton, finished the 1953 football season in third place in the Central Suburban League. The crystal ball gazers rated Golden as second division underdogs because Coach Eaton had but six returning lettermen, onl) t\VO of \Vhom \Vere baclfield material. Ho\veve r , they overlooked the rapid development of the previous yea r 's num e ralmen

In pre-season competition Golden held highly rated Eng1e,vood to an exciting scoreless tic, and then beat Rifl e, the 1952 state runnersup, t\venty t o six.

The t\dams City Eagles, the league doormat, \\ere routed 46 to Oby the Demo n s in the season opener. Th e al,vays dangerous Ti gers of Lakewood threatened to pin a defeat on Golden early 1n the seaso n , but they could not penetrate a determined Demon defense and finally succumbed 6 to O in a game hampered by high winds. I n the follovving game 1\r\ ada's stubborn Redskins took some joy from Golden's homecoming by surging from behind in the last quarter to salvage a six to six tic.

The Demons tool th e field at \Vestminster ,vith high hopes of upsetting the \V arnors and rcmc1ining in -.ccond place, but Golden dropped a 7 to O heart -breaker \vhen Westminster scored from 20 yards out \Vith only a minute remaining in the game. The \i\/h eatridge Farmers added to Golden's disappointment by trouncing the D emons 14 to O in a slippen1 scd of mud. Golden got back on tpeir \Vinning ,vays by coming from behind to edge the Littl eton Lions 27 to 26 in a hair -raising thriller.

In the season finale (;o)den tangled \\ ith the unbeaten and f avored Aurora Trojans. Golden pla) eel the league co-champions to a standsti ll in the first h a lf, but /\urora's hopes for remaining the league's only undefeated team soared \vhen they tallied six points mid\vay through th e third quarter. In the final period Golden stunned everyone by scoring on a 49 yard pass play and con,·erting the extra point co upset the Trojans seven to six in the season's greatest contest.

Coach Eaton's post-season con1ment ,vas, "Jhe boys brought me more grief and n1ore joy than any other team I have coached."
