Selecttestneighborhoods: Afterexploringwhatever materialsmightbeavailable atpresent(demographics, publichealthrecords,crime statistics,etc)andin consultationwithyou,we couldidentifycontroland “experimental”sites(by experimental”Ijustmean sites"whereyouhavealready madesomeinterventions).
Establishingbaselines: Beforebeginningworkonthe ground,itwouldbeusefulto collectdataonthecurrent stateofsubjectivewell-being andstressofresidentsofthe areasunderstudyby administrationofasurvey usingavarietyofcurrently availablestandardizedtools. Thesecouldbeadministered eitheronlineorbymail.Ifyou alreadyhaveatooltousefor publicengagement,this wouldbeuseful.Ifyou alreadyhavesomerecent datarelatedtoanyofthis,I couldtrytoincorporate.

Preliminaryidentificationof hotspots:Partofthemail-out (oronlinesurvey)could includeatoolwithwhich participantscouldanswer site-locatedquestions(eg. “canyouindicatetheareain yourneighborhoodwhere youliketobethemost?”or “canyouindicatetheareain yourneighborhoodwhere youfeelthemostanxious?”
Analysis:Basedondata collectedin2and3,Icould prepareabriefreportthat couldhighlightthe effectivenessofcurrent interventionsbutIwouldalso usethedatatopreparefor phase2. 1.
Phase2 Datacollection:Basedon findingsfromPhase1 research,identifyagroupof
detailedexplorationofthe impactofurbandesignon emotionandstress.Iwould developabalancedsample (age,gender,race,SES)who wouldbeinvitedtotakeone ormorewalkswithme throughtheirown neighborhoodand,time permittingoneother neighborhoodthattheydon’t knowaswell.Methodology herewouldincludeboth questionnairesusingaform of“ecologicalmomentaryassessment”(justasking questionsabouttheircurrent locationaswewalk)and somebiometrics.For biometrics,Iwoulduse sensorstomeasureskin conductancelevels,which willtellmeaboutstressful arousal.I’mbasingcost estimatesonavisitofabout 3daysinlength.Thiswould yieldasampleofabout30 people,assuming10onehourinterviewsperday.
