Streetsville Lions

I just learned yesterday that we lost another great Streetsville Lion – Roy Reusche (joined October 1983). We have also recently lost Homer Dunn (original charter member – January 1952) and Paul Roy (joined October 1967) over the last number of months.

rules when I make decisions regarding my family, my work and my free time. What makes these words of wisdom special to me is that the common denominator to all three is the effort of giving and not taking.

The loss of these fine gentlemen has motivated me to write this article to express how these men have impacted not only my life, but the greater community we call home – Streetsville.

I learned a different type of work – one that doesn’t include a pay check but ultimately provides more satisfaction then any financial compensation. This work is called volunteering.

When I began courting my wife, Deanne Clipperton in the early 1990’s, her Dad, Jon Clipperton (joined June 1967) was a very active Streetsville Lion.

To stay in my future father-in-law’s good books, I would make sure that I was available to attend certain key Lion’s social events. The club hosted events such as the Christmas Dinner Dances and the legendary Elimination Draw that would take place in the early part of the New Year.

This group of men not only raised money for bricks and mortar in our community such as the Vic Johnston Community Center, Streetsville Pool and the Credit Valley Hospital but they also helped in other ways such as maintaining the yard at the Peel Cheshire Home on Queen Street, cleaning the garbage on Thomas Street, providing a local Farmers Market or even just chasing ducks down the Credit River during the Bread and Honey or offering hot dogs at the Mississauga Santa Parade to help raise money for the local food bank. I can go and on regarding the little things this club has done over the years for this community but I only have so many words for this article.

These events not only introduced me to the culture of volunteerism that flows deeply in our community, but they also brought me to a group of gentleman that have impacted my life in many different ways. The funny part is that when I say gentleman I really mean gentleman as women were not allowed to join the club, even when I joined in the year 2000. They have since seen the error of their ways, but I still remember the great debate within our closed doors regarding the introduction of ladies to the club.

As the debate was rolling on, Lion Homer Dunn who was one of the last original Charter Members from 1952, stood up and I thought here we go – since he actually was involved in creating the original rule, he is going to squash this debate and the question on the floor would be left for another time. But to everyone’s surprise he simply told the room that Ladies were welcome in this club and it was time for change – that ended that debate quickly and since then we have had some amazing ladies be part of this club at every capacity.

What is amazing with this group of volunteers is not once in my 25 years of either being around or a member have I ever seen a Lion ask for Thanks – they just do the work because it needs to be done to make our home and community better. These gentleman and now ladies are true heroes of our community and I hope this club will be around for generations to come.

I personally want to thank them all for their positive life lessons that they have passed onto me through their mentoring and guidance. They not only helped build our community but in my case they helped build me as a man.

In no way am I knocking the ladies contribution, but what I think made this club a legacy was this group of men. The members of the club came from all walks of life - they had high level executives, teachers, tradesmen, retailers and professionals to name a few.

Well done boys – lest we forget!

What made this club special in my opinion was that it didn’t matter how much money you had in your bank account or how big your house was, when you joined the Streetsville Lions you became a Lion – not a professional Lion or a rich Lion but just a Lion. Everyone was equal when you entered the club and you respected everyone’s opinion – didn’t have to agree with it, but you had to respect it as it was coming from a fellow Lion. Everyone had an equal voice in the room plain and simple. I learned this lesson of equality quickly and it has stayed with me since and it has impacted me deeply with all the things I encounter daily.

I also learned a great deal of real history from these gentlemen. One year early in my tenure, we had every Lion stand up and tell their story so that we could get to know each other better. As a History Major from University, I was amazed by their stories – I heard tales of working for Camp X in World War II which trained British Spies (this real camp led to the James Bond 007 novels to be created), I heard a story of one young German boy who trekked across a war torn Europe to find a new life in North America by himself.

I heard stories of childhood experiences in Streetsville that would compare to anything that Mark Twain would have penned. The funny part was that these men had to be told to tell these stories under duress – these men were not in the business of glorifying or feeling sorry for their life experiences.

It just made them who they were and that was that! Ultimately, I learned humility from them but all their stories had one common theme – life is not perfect but if you keep a positive perspective good things will happen in the long run. You just have to keep moving forward no matter what.

I also learned the fundamental rules of a happy life. I was taught early on from Bill Holmes (joined February 1977) that the three most important things to any man are the following – your family, your work, and then volunteering. If you can commit to those three specific areas of your life and keep them in that particular order you will ultimately find a sense of satisfaction when you look back on your life. To this day I still follow those

AR coating is especially beneficial when used on high index lenses, which reflect more light than regular plastic lenses. The higher the index of refraction (of the lens material), the more light will be reflected from the surface of the lenses.

Regular plastic lenses reflect about 8% of light hitting the lenses, so only 92% of available light enters the eye for vision. High index plastic lenses can reflect up to 50 percent more light than regular plastic lenses (approximately 12% of available light), so even less light is available to the eye for vision.

This can be particularly troublesome in low-light conditions, such as when driving at night. Early morning commuters experience it too. But glare from streetlights and headlights are not only bothersome, but dangerous.

Today’s modern anti-reflective coatings can virtually eliminate the reflection of light from eyeglass lenses, allowing 99.5% of available light to pass through the lenses and enter the eye for good vision.

By eliminating reflections, AR coating also makes your eyeglass lenses look less visible so people can see your eyes and facial expressions more clearly without the obstruction of the glare. Anti-reflective glasses are also more attractive, so you can look your best in all lighting conditions.

Most premium anti-reflective coatings include a “hydrophobic” surface layer that prevents water spots from forming and makes the lenses easier to clean. Some AR coatings also include an “oleophobic” surface layer that repels skin oils and makes it easier to remove smudges from the lenses.

Some eyeglass lenses have factory-applied AR coating on both lens surfaces. Other lenses, particularly progressive lenses and other multifocal lenses (i.e., bifocals and trifocals), have the coating applied after the lenses have been customized to your eyeglass prescription by an optical lab.

The 4th Annual Family Day Fun Skate On Monday, February 16th Vianney Academy of Learning will host the 4th Annual Family Day Skate. This popular Family Day fundraising event will take place at Vic Johnston Community Centre from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The Family Day Skate raises money to support children with autism and learning disabilities in our community. By Lindsay Howe Streetsville is a growing and thriving village in the City of Mississauga. Many of the flourishing businesses have been around for decades and have become a staple within the community.

Brad Butt, M.P. hosted his annual New Year Levee on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at the Streetsville Legion where over 200 people attended.

Whereas other long-standing businesses have recently closed their doors, creating room for fresh new businesses to take over. Over the past year, 10 new businesses have opened up shop in the Village of Streetsville. New businesses are important to a growing and thriving village community. As times change, so do the wants and needs of community members.

During this special event, the Timothy Street Medals of Honour were presented to deserving individuals in the community with exemplary volunteer service.

COMMUNITY CORNER Streetsville Historical Society The Streetsville Historical Society’s archives at the Leslie Log House at 4415 Mississauga Road, just south of Eglinton Avenue is open every Wednesday and Sunday afternoon from 1 – 4 pm. Visitors are welcome and free tours are provided. They also have a small gift shop with very reasonable prices.

The next general meeting is on February 12, 2015 at 7:30 pm at the Streetsville United Church and is open to all. The guest speaker will be Todd Ladner.

Vegas style fundraiser to offer disadvantaged children a chance at summer fun The Full Circle “Aces are Wild” event will benefit the Sponsor a Child program, as well as a number of local charities including Interim Place, Community Living and Boys and Girls Clubs. Conor’s Court launched Conor’s Court is a youth enrichment program, which offers disadvantaged kids the opportunity to learn squash and tennis. The program consists of on-court training in either sport with encouragement and support to play local, provincial and national tournaments. Kids also receive academic support through tutoring along with mentoring by local community and business leaders.

The flagship location for Conor’s Court will be Club Meadowvale, a private racquet club in Mississauga, which features five international squash courts and four indoor tennis courts.

The program is the legacy of junior squash player, Conor Campbell, who passed away suddenly. Conor’s Court is dedicated to him and his spirit, on and off the court.

Ward 11 update – by Councillor George Carlson Throughout Ontario, approximately 55% of garbage that could be recycled unfortunately ends up in our landfills instead.

The organics (green) cart is available in one size only. All residents will receive a 100 L green cart. This new green cart will hold the same amount of organic waste as 2 current green carts or 14 small kitchen organics containers.

This represents approximately 2.7 million tonnes of waste that could have been diverted out of our landfills into recycling or organics recycling, which is equivalent to the weight of 6,222 Boeing 747 jets! As a result, our landfills are running out of space or are already full. Landfills in the Region of Peel and Guelph are already full and garbage is being transported to other cities.

Garbage carts are available in 3 sizes: Small, Medium, and Large and will hold the following amounts of waste:

Presently, the Region of Peel provides weekly waste collection services to approximately 325,000 households in Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon. Each and every household can make a difference to ensure that their household waste is being diverted out of our landfills by handling their garbage, recycling, and organics household waste in ways that conserve and protect our environment for generations to come.

· A small cart will hold 2 - 3 bags of garbage. · A medium cart will hold 3 - 4 bags of garbage. · A large cart will hold 4 - 5 bags of garbage.

Recycling carts are also available in 3 sizes: Small, Medium, and Large and will hold the following amounts of recycling:

Beginning the week of January 4, 2016, the Region of Peel will be changing to a cart-based, bi-weekly waste collection program, which will provide residents with opportunities to ensure that household waste is diverted out of our landfills and into recycling. Under this new waste collection program, the following changes will occur to your household waste collection:

· Garbage and organics will be picked up one week

· Recycling and organics will be picked up the next week

· Change from garbage bags and recycling bins to carts

· Yard waste collection will not be affected

· A small cart will hold 2 blue boxes. · A medium cart will hold 4 blue boxes. · A large cart will hold 6 blue boxes.

Residents will need to choose the sizes of the garbage and recycling carts they would like to use to collect their respective household waste. When choosing cart sizes, please keep in mind the amount of household waste that you and your family produce over a 2 week period. Residents must choose their cart sizes by March 31, 2015 and can do so in the following ways:

The new cart-based, bi-weekly waste collection program will result in a reduction of the amount of waste that is sent to landfills and an increase in recycling and organics recycling. Under the new waste collection program, an additional 4-6% of waste material will be diverted from landfills. The new waste collection program will also reduce current greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 6,700 - 11,100 tonnes of eCO2. This reduction in greenhouse gases will be achieved by reducing the garbage fleet; reducing the amount of organic material being sent to landfills; reducing the number of loads hauled to landfills; and reducing the recycling fleet. The new waste collection program is very economical and will result in an annual costsavings of approximately $9 million.

Attend an Open House hosted by the Region of Peel: Ward 11 Open House Thursday, March 12, 2015, from 4-9pm at Dolphin Senior Public School 18 Brookside Drive, Mississauga, ON L5M 1H3 Carts will be delivered, free of charge, to residences between SeptemberDecember 2015, and you will begin using your carts the week of January 4, 2016, when the new waste collection program begins. Until then, please continue to use your old blue box, green bin, and garbage containers/bags to collect your household waste.

In addition to these benefits, the new garbage, recycling, and organics carts are easy to wheel to the curb; pest resistant; and will prevent windblown blue box litter, which costs the City approximately $385,000 in litter cleanup costs each year.

Streetsville’s Santa Hat Charity Pub Crawl was a Success!

By Lindsay Howe Streetsville’s 2nd annual Santa Hat Charity Pub Crawl took place just before Christmas on Saturday, December 20th.

This pub crawl is a fundraising effort to support the Mississauga Food Bank. Over 100 people came out to the pub crawl and $1,600 was raised to support those who are affected by hunger in the community. The donation far exceeded the donation of $1,100 from the previous year. The generous donation made to the Food Bank is thanks to pub-crawl organizers: Cole Maricotti, Tyler Medick, Morgan Maccurdy, Caleb Groen, Des Cowan and Dan Macliesh. The pub-crawl attendees dressed in funny Christmas hats, which were provided in exchange for their donations.

In addition to raising a lot of money for a good cause, the pub-crawl was also an opportunity for many Streetsville High School graduate students to reunite and celebrate the season. The group enjoyed a lively night at some of their favourite village pubs! The night started out at The Franklin House, followed by Cuchulainn’s Irish Pub and ended off at Cock & Pheasant Pub. The Mississauga Food Bank works to fight hunger and feed hope in the community. Not only does The Mississauga Food Bank serve 2.5 million meals a year but they also find long-term solutions to hunger. Through their member agencies they provide neighbourhood food banks, breakfast clubs, hot meal programs, shelters, and youth drop-ins.

As a result of the generosity shown by community members, The Mississauga Food Bank reached record-breaking results in December, far exceeding their goals. Over $350,000 and 225,000 pounds of food were donated to the Holiday Drive. A special thanks to the organizers of the Santa Hat Charity Pub Crawl for their hard work and generous donation to The Mississauga Food Bank!

Streetsville Tigers roster includes: Ben Loreto, Eric Bonsteel, Aiden Thompson, Patrick Maia, John-Michael Milinkovic, Bryce Sutherland, Louis Elia, Liam Torres, Matthew Lunghi, Kevin Angers, Jake Link, Ivan Mikuljan, Kudhrit Gill, Jack Farlow, Brandyn Carta, Brandon Prete, Marcus Fisico, Head Coach Stephane Angers, Assistant Coach Jim Bonsteel, Assistant Coach Jim Gray, Manager Frank Fisico and Trainer Darin Sutherland.

This year, the team has brought their performance to another level and is in the midst of a dream season. Their recipe for success has been a medley of hard work, skill, teamwork and timely scoring. Upon entering this season, the coaching staff, led by Stephane Angers, set some very lofty goals for themselves, including finishing first place in the GTHL West standings and to qualify for the North American International Silver Stick tournament.

In the Brampton Regional Silver Stick qualifier the Tigers won the tournament and thus qualified for the international tournament with a thrilling overtime victory over their local rival, the Mississauga Braves. “We have great respect for the Mississauga Braves,” stated Coach Angers after the victory. “We bring out the best in each other and either team would have been a worthy representative at the Silver Stick (international) but we are certainly happy it is us.”

The International Silver Stick was held January 22-25 in Port Huron, Michigan. Teams from Ontario and the United States, representing 20 different regional qualifiers gathered in this minor hockey hotbed to battle for the coveted crown. The Tigers were placed in a division with the Kensington Valley Rebels, Ottawa Valley Silver Seven and Peoria Rivermen.

They may be in the Peewee age group but there was nothing small about their effort in the preliminary games. A late goal (with the goalie out) earned the Tigers a tie in their first game against Peoria and that intensity carried over to their subsequent games as they skated past Ottawa Valley (3-1) and Kensington Valley (Michigan) (7-2).

Entering the elimination round Streetsville was ranked #2 and drew a quarterfinal against Boulder, Colorado. This game was all Streetsville as they won 3-0 and earned a semifinal date with Centre Wellington (Ontario).

Hockey games are scheduled for 3 periods but Streetsville and Wellington must have enjoyed each other’s company because it took 7 periods to decide the winner. Tied 1-1 after regulation, both teams traded chances over three tight checking overtime periods. Part of the Tigers’ success this year has been strong goaltending and timely scoring. This would surface as the difference when in the fourth overtime period, Streetsville’s goaltender, Matthew Lunghi, made an improbable glove save on a breakaway that appeared to be a sure goal. Using the heroics of the goaltender as momentum, Bryce Sutherland of the Tigers went in on his own breakaway only a few minutes later and made a move that paralleled the display in the NHL skills completion from the night before. Sutherland made no mistake and his goal put the Tigers into the finals where they would play the Barrie Colts, who also won their semifinal in overtime.

Earlier in the season the Tigers and Colts played each other in a preseason tournament. The Colts took round one but round two held much greater significance. The final was a back-and-forth affair with both teams holding leads at different points in the game. Fittingly, the game, as did both semifinals, required overtime. With the score 4-4, the Tigers shocked the Colts as they entered the second overtime period with increased energy and determination. Backed by their goaltender, Jake Link, the Tigers controlled the extra frame and hoped that there was another overtime hero somewhere on their bench. That hero would be found 6 minutes and 25 seconds into the period when Brandon Prete’s backhand in the goalmouth found the back of the net and sent the Tigers’ parents, coaches and players into a frenzy as they realized their goal of winning the International Silver Stick.

It takes a special group of people to come together and win a tournament of this magnitude. “Their (Tigers Players) work ethic is through the roof,” stated an elated Coach Angers after the game. “Ask anyone who trains them, they will all tell you how amazing they are to work with.” Work ethic is exactly what the Tigers needed to win this prestigious tournament, as it took 12 periods to win the final two games.

The community of Streetsville salutes this wonderful group of players, coaches and parents for bringing an International Silver Stick banner to the walls of the Vic. As the players grow older and go their separate ways, they can always come to the Vic in Streetsville, stare at their championship banner and remember the life lessons and skills that they acquired from playing the greatest sport in the world, in a village that plays the game like Tigers.

I know that most people are happy about the winter we are having so far, cold but bearable with not much snow.

My family and I on the other hand totally disagree! If it is going to be winter and cold then let it snow! It is not fun to just go outside and hang out in the cold! There needs to be snow so that you can go outside and play… build a snowman, a snow fort, go tobogganing, or snowshoeing something different. Something other than just doing the same old thing that you can do in any other season without freezing your toosh off!

The arena is located at 335 Church Street, Mississauga.

The OHF Championships are a pinnacle event that marks the end of the playing season for 500 competitive minor hockey players across Ontario. The tournament will host the top five rep teams from the 98 rep teams playing Bantam A across the province.

We are excited that our very own Meadowvale Mohawks will be one of these top five teams!

Walking the dog, skateboarding, biking or scootering are all much more enjoyable when it is warmer out! The same old thing is just not as fun when you are freezing, because if you wait a few months you can do the same thing and still feel your face. So for me, we live in Canada so bring on the snow.

My kids can’t wait to get outside when those little white flakes start to fall.

Graydon is the first to grab his gear and head out to shovel the driveway, and the other two are not far behind. The morning of the first snowfall this year, I could not keep Graydon inside. He looked out the window and when he saw the snow he quickly was outside in his pajamas and boots in the back yard.

The first question from the kids when the snow starts to fall usually is “when can we go tobogganing?” A few weeks ago, just before all the snow melted, we went tobogganing on a Sunday afternoon with friends. Todd was going to stay home because the Packers were playing, but the kids were relentless and really wanted him to come. Especially Graydon “come daddy, come! Who is going to go down the hill with me?” Todd decided to join and catch the highlights of the game later. He was so glad that he did. We had a great afternoon of fun on the hill with the kids!

There were plenty of smiles, fun, laughter, fresh air, exercise and great memories! I think we all slept better that night than we have in a long time.

But the next day the snow melted and we have not been able to go tobogganing since. So, here is to SNOW in our near future. I am sure I am going to get some hate mail about my wish for snow but …. Bring on the white stuff and lots of it!

- Write down what is in each room and corresponding dollar value for each item in that room. Take a photo of the room as well as one for each major and/or valuable item. Or you can make a video recording of each room and its contents. Including a family member in the photo of the room will help establish ownership should you ever have need to file an insurance claim.

Puppy Donation Made After Young Couple Lose Dog in Coyote Attack

When Streetsville Breeder Cheryl Paget heard the devastating news that a local Yorkshire terrier was attacked and killed by a coyote, she felt for the young couple who lost their beloved family pet.

Cheryl breeds Yorkshire Terriers and decided to generously donate one of the puppies from her latest litter to the couple. Cheryl wanted to bring some happiness to Maggie and Rafal Kubat who are mourning the loss of their dog Gucci.

The incident happened on Friday, November 7th when Rafal was taking the two dogs for a walk along a neighbourhood sidewalk, near their home in Mississauga. The dogs were on a leash when a coyote came up and attacked them. Rafal was mauled to the ground by the coyote and Gucci was ripped from the leash. The coyote quickly took off with the poor dog in its mouth. As a result of the injuries acquired from the attack, Rafal must undergo surgery to repair his torn ACL. This is not the first time Cheryl has donated a puppy to someone who lost their Yorkie in a coyote attack. In 2009, Cheryl read a story just like Rafal and Maggie’s where a young woman in the Streetsville area also lost her Yorkie in a coyote attack.

On a brighter note, Maggie and Rafal are ecstatic about the arrival of their Yorkshire Terrier puppy. While a new puppy will not replace Gucci, the news about the donation did provide the couple with some comfort over the holidays while they were grieving. A loveable and energetic puppy will undoubtedly lift Maggie and Rafal’s spirits.!

Cheryl generously donated one of her puppies to the woman involved to help ease the pain of her loss. Cheryl understands first hand the strife that goes with losing a beloved pet this way. She went through a rather similar experience when her pet Yorkie was taken from her in a coyote attack, which happened in 2008.

Paget Paws breeds Yorkshire terrier puppies not for the money, but for the love of the breed. Paget Paws is passionate about raising healthy dogs with good temperaments in order for these dogs to grow into great family pets and live a long life. The threat of coyotes has become an increasing concern to the community, especially to dog owners. Rotary Clubs of Mississauga

The other day a friend asked: “What’s Rotary?” He immediately answered his own question by saying “A Club of old men, right?”

I replied politely “Yes, there are old men, who are Rotarians” not to upset him for his incorrect observation. “However, I think your picture is a bit out of focus.” “Actually, Rotary is a dynamic world-wide organization of women and men.”

SO WHAT IS ROTARY? We are 1.2 million neighbours, friends, professionals and business leaders who come together to create positive, lasting change in our communities and around the world. There are 32,000 clubs in 200 countries, who welcome you. In Mississauga there are nine clubs. Rotarians meet either for breakfast, lunch or dinner. www.mississaugarotary.org HOW DO WE WORK? Our impact starts with our members—people who work with their clubs to solve some of our communities’ challenges. Their efforts are supported by Rotary International, our member association, and The Rotary Foundation, which turns generous donations into grants that fund the work of our members and partners around the world.

The goals include illiteracy – i.e. In Mississauga grade 3 students receive dictionaries from local Rotary Clubs; disease – Polio Plus is a Rotary International project that is eradicating Polio World Wide. Three Ways to Profit from the Spring Real Estate Market in Mississauga Drive down any street in Mississauga in March and you’re likely to see at least one “For Sale” sign sprouting out of the mud. Welcome to the spring market!

For many of my clients but by no means all of them, a move revolves around the need to get the kids settled before school starts in September, and the math goes something like this: The house might take a month or two to sell.

The deal might not close for another two or three months.

That brings us to a mid-summer move, enough time to get settled before the school bells ring again.

Other people have equally compelling reasons to make a change to their housing arrangements in Spring and the result is that more houses sell at this time of year than any other. The number of potential buyers is at its highest at this time of year, and there is plenty of choice from which a potential purchaser can choose. As a realtor active in the Mississauga area, I find that about 60% of my business takes place from early February to late June.

The buyers and sellers I work with all want to get the best deal possible: a house is usually a family’s biggest investment and it’s important to protect the equity.

If you are looking at making a move this year, here are few tips for maximizing the profitability of your upcoming transaction: 1. Get your finances in order first. Determine how much equity you have in your current property (or how much money you have saved, if you don’t already own a home) and visit your bank or other lending institution to determine how much mortgage you are eligible to borrow.

If you are purchasing a new home, this will let you act quickly in the event that you end up in a bidding war for the new property. If you are selling your house, knowing your numbers will let you react quickly when an offer comes in.

2. Be clear on what you want to buy. It’s tough to be a first-time home owner in Mississauga -- according to CREA, the annual average sale price for 2014 was a record $506,579, up 5.3 per cent from the previous year. Surprise! Surprise!

Earlier this week I had been enjoying the radio ads telling us with humour that surprises are not always good. Checking your parent’s browsing history, cold sores, etc. And then along comes the Bank of Canada cutting the overnight interest rate Wednesday morning. By noon the TSX index was up over 300 points and by Friday morning it was up over 500 points in total. And everyone was surprised. But was it a good surprise?

-The Bank of Canada believes low oil prices are overall negative for the Canadian economy (the price of oil has already fallen a further $10 since coming to this conclusion) and if oil stays where it is the central bank expects the economy to grow even slower than it had forecast.

-The central bank was trying to push down the interest rates charged by Canada’s big banks, making it cheaper for companies to borrow money to grow their businesses.

-A rate cut by the central bank likely means lower interest rates for variable rate mortgages, lines of credit and other loans based on the prime rate, which will likely boost consumer spending.

-The loonie immediately fell by more than 1.5 cents against the U.S. dollar.

A lower dollar makes Canadian goods cheaper for U.S. buyers, helping to stimulate exports but increasing the cost of imports.

So why did the stock market go up so much? Point one tells us that the Bank of Canada believes falling oil prices are very bad for the economy. Is it not true that companies may struggle to perform well in a poor economy?

Point two means companies can afford to expand to support sales in a poor economy. This seems silly until you get to point 3. Point 3 suggests that consumers will be able to continue on their spending spree buying houses and cars and increasing their indebtedness that is already at historic highs.

All through December 2014 media piece after media piece reminded us that Canadian consumer debt is at an all time high, so borrowing some more makes sense (not really)? Point 4 reminds us that with a devalued dollar, exporters will be able to increase their sales but consumers will pay more for just about everything we buy because few goods are manufactured completely in Canada.

Seemingly, not the best set of reasons to quickly buy Canadian shares or get bullish on the future of earnings at large Canadian companies, which is what is supposed to drive share prices. So what’s up? Well your own portfolio might not be driven by use of debt but the market as a whole is.

The Bank of Canada announcement meant that investors using debt were going to see even larger profits if the market continues its upward trend.

They wanted a piece of that, so in they jump. However, debt outstanding against investments, so called margin debt, is at all time highs and going higher. In the United States margin debt is higher in relative terms than it has been since 1929 and all investors know what happened to the stock markets in 1929.
