Lodge stays open

Bashaw Valley Lodge is opening its dining area to the community and will market the facility as a retreat centre for overnight stays. The lodge, which will continue as an Independent Seniors Living Complex, will also be used as community event centre and meeting space. Bashaw Town Council, during its regular meeting April 5, unanimously voted in favour of rezoning the lodge to allow for these new uses. “It means a lot to everyone,” Lodge Manager Sam Kirsch told council afterwards. “Hopefully the community will also benefit from it.” Council stipulated, however, that parking for increased use at the facility must be confined within the facility site. was found to be accurate. Coun. Lynn Schultz said the town would be setting a precedent if they gave a discount. Coun. Darren Pearson suggested council allow the owner to pay the bill over six months. Council agreed to allow the homeowner to pay the bill over six months with no penalties unless the account goes into arrears.

A Bashaw property owner asked council for a reprieve on an unexpected $2,901 water bill. A portion of a letter presented to council, during its regular meeting April 5, stated: “The February 2017 bill came in at approximately five to six times normal due to a water issue that was not addressed until we were informed of the expected bill. “We do not expect the bill to be normalized as we realize our liability but I think any property owner would be shocked by a bill this size. We would appreciate any help or discount that council could provide on this one-time basis.” Administration didn’t provide the name of the letter writer or property owner. In Chief Administrative Officer’s (CAO) Theresa Fuller’s report to council, it was stated that a typical utility bill for a multi-family home is about $593 every two months. CAO Fuller’s report said that when administration was reviewing bills in February they came across the bill and called the property manager. The water meter was removed for testing and it

Draft budget tabled until council sees more details Cont’d from Pg 1 Camping will continue to be allowed but it has to be specific to events at the lodge and no more than five RV sites. Last year the town approved the lodge as an independent seniors’ lodge that offered affordable room and board for independent seniors. Its goal was to offer 35 rentable suites that offered supportive living options and amenities as well as staff onsite 24-hours. The lodge, however, lost its license to be a seniors’ facility because it didn’t have the minimum number of residents so the owners wanted to expand its business model to keep the facility up and running.

Budget tabled

Council, during its regular meeting April 5, tabled its draft budget citing they want to see more details as a reason. Coun. Bryan Gust said he was expecting a financial breakdown of departments and what specifically is going up or down. Likewise, Coun. Lynn Schultz agreed. “I would like to see a breakdown and go over it when I have time.” Total revenue is estimated to be $1.1 million and $1.8 million for expenses. The $757,304 shortfall would be offset through taxation. This year’s budget includes $14,000 for painting the water tower, $16,000 for school enhancement and

Administration didn’t reveal the name of the letter writer. Coun. Lynn Schultz said the bleachers are sturdy and not a liability issue but need to be painted and some boards replaced. Murray Holroyd, the town’s public work’s foreman, suggested the ball

Bryan Gust suggested council price it out. Coun. Schultz said that porta potties will be brought in this year. Holroyd said public works is looking into costs to put concrete under the bleachers.

ON THE OTHER HAND

Least favourite job, shopping for utilities by B.P. Schimke I’m not a shopper at the best of times but having to shop for electricity and gas is a complete annoyance. I will never forgive the dearly departed Premier Ralph Klein for deregulation and the ruse that this would bring in competition and lower prices for the “little guy” consumer. My five-year contract with EasyMax is up and after searching providers online, I made progress only when I called the Utility Consumer Advocate Office and talked to a knowledgeable civil servant. Taxes well-spent to fund this office, but, of course, unnecessary prior to deregulation.

I did suggest kindly that if they really cared about keeping me as their customer, they would have been taking care of me when I was their customer, not when I was leaving.

I learned it had nothing to do with seeking the best provider and best prices but rather deciding how much risk I was prepared to assume and in what form. There were two choices: take the risk of month-to-month rate changes, or lock in for two- or five-year contracts at a fixed rate. Much to my dismay, the Advocate’s Office showed me how I had been paying the lofty price of $0.08 per kilowatt hour (kWh) for five years even though electricity prices have been much lower than that for most of those years. On the other hand, my contracted gas price was only marginally higher than the regulated variable rate. Being a student of the collapse of energy giant, Enron, in the United States, I know it’s much easier to game electricity prices than gas prices. Unfortunately for Alberta consumers we’ve been gamed since deregulation.

One example, in October 2015 power producer, TransAlta, settled on a $56 million fine for deliberately timing outages at their power plants to drive up energy costs. I like to call it Enron Gaming 101. Perhaps criminal charges for directors and chief executive officers would be a better deterrent than simply a fine. But I digress, back to shopping. I decide on the regulated option, an emotional response to having been screwed over by the previous 5-year contract. There was no competitive choice. Enmax was my mandated electricity provider and Direct Energy my gas supplier. When I called Enmax to cancel EasyMax, they immediately had all sorts of what I shall call “bribes” to keep me as their customer, including an offer of cold hard cash being applied to my future account. I did suggest kindly that if they really cared about keeping me as their customer, they would have been taking care of me when I was their customer, not when I was leaving. When I phoned Direct Energy to sign up for gas delivery they had to keep $200 of my money on deposit to ensure this new customer would pay her bills. If they cared about customer service, a simple credit check would have made their deposit request totally unnecessary and laughable. The deregulation of the utilities industry was simply an exercise to enrich the share prices of utility companies, enhance bonuses of their executive team and allow politicians to stroke industry leaders for future perks and appointments after retiring from government. Since coming to power the ND government has made a number of changes to the operation of the electricity market. They have also promised a ceiling price per kWh for regulated electricity this spring. What a relief to actually have a government in Edmonton working for the people, rather than one catering primarily to the industry top dogs.

Resolve the climate change issue in court by Herman Schwenk Well here I go again. I’m probably going to be accused of having my mind on a single track and rightly so. I’ve been trying to figure out if there is some way of holding these climate change zealots to account. Regardless of the information and evidence to the contrary, they still try to overwhelm us with their propaganda and keep on implementing world policy that if it keeps on will bankrupt the world. I think there is a way that this issue can be settled. The key to determine who is right and wrong is evidence.

The key to determine

who is right and wrong is evidence.

Every time that someone is challenged to prove that C02 emissions are causing climate change they immediately accuse the individual of being a climate change denier. When anyone who supports the theory that C02 is the cause of global warming is challenged to debate the issue they refuse. They have never provided any real scientific evidence to support their cause. I cannot understand why the mainstream media have not forced these people to prove the science that is the basis of their cause for climate change. However there is a way to force the issue. Someone with deep pockets needs to challenge the supporters of C02 caused climate change in court. Court decisions are based on evidence. Geological and Climatological research scientists have plenty of evidence to prove that C02 does not and has never been a factor in climate

change going back billions of years. There is a book written by Bruno Weskel and published in 2009 with the title “ The Sky is Not Falling”. That book was written on the concept of putting climate change on trial. The book goes into great detail on the research that was done. The research has determined that there have been 11 ice ages going back about two and a half billion years ago. The evidence presented in this book has also shown that in every ice age C02 levels increased after the climate had warmed up, not before. This book was written eight years ago and it should have received the attention of the world right after it was published but some how the media and climate environmentalists have been successful in keeping the information suppressed. The conclusion in this book is that it is impossible for C02 to cause climate change. So far governments and environmentalists around the world have succeeded in implementing very destructive economic policy based on flawed science. Ontario has become an economic basket case and the economy of Alberta is deteriorating at a rapid pace as it continues to implement its Climate Change Plan. The renewable energy polices and projects of these governments require large subsidies or they could not attract the capital necessary for their development. They may create some jobs but rather than create new wealth these jobs consume wealth. I think the large electric utilities in Alberta such as Atco Electric and Transalta would have reason to take the Alberta government to court and force them to prove that C02 emissions are causing climate change and therefore it is necessary to close down their coal-fired generation stations. Illegal immigration is a “huge issue” Dear Editor, The flooding of our borders with illegal immigrants is a “huge issue”! Chris Nelson, one of the best writers for the Herald writes the feelings of thousands of Western Canadians re: this issue and many others. Kudos to him. However, the worries and fears of

this immense problem has fallen on deaf ears. Besides connecting with our MP’s, is there any other method of this protest being heard by ‘the People’.? We are frightened, very frustrated and downright angry, seeing our Canada erode in every way, of values and beliefs.

Now our taxpayers money has set up a social system for illegal immigrants to move in and live off the land. Is the pride and hard work that established what our country was, not strong enough to defend? Where are the Federal leaders when we need them? Gayle Smigg Hanna, Ab.

We appreciate all our volunteers

Ball gloves at recess by K. Smawley Students and staff returned to school on April 3 refreshed from their spring break and ready to take on the week. Students, following their spring break, enjoyed the playground that lost its last signs of winter and the students could run around without worry about slippery ice spots. Spring is in the air, as kids have started to bring their ball gloves to school for recess and the ear piercingly loud squeak of the swings could finally be heard again as kids pumped towards the clouds. Before spring break, the Jr. ATB bank was open on Thurs., March 23. All nine employees were present and they helped 15 customers. This month’s winner of the $25 gift card was Kolby Renschler. Recently, the Kinder Kids got creative with cardboard boxes. They had to make a plan and build with a variety of 3D shapes. The boys made a fantastic spacesubmarine and the girls made a beautiful house. The Kinder Kids met their Wildly Important Goal (WIG) Apr. 3, getting ready for grade one and decided to celebrate with a “camping” day. They sang campfire songs, walked to the beach, had a picnic, and played games. The camping theme included a tent set up and tissue paper and Christmas light campfire. Ralph Cervi came to our school on Mon., April 3 to talk to a group of 14 parents from the community about digital citizenship and safety. The grade 1/2 class have been working on setting personal WIG’s each week, and they have had an ongoing class WIG which they just completed! Their class goal was to keep their hallway clean after each recess from the beginning of March to spring break. We chose a new accountability person each day to be our hallway checker. They worked so hard together to reach their goal without any incentives. Just because of that, I think a treat will be coming their way one of these days! On April 5, Mr. Ries and the grade 9 class travelled to Augustana for the tour of the campus followed by some fun activities. Lunch was at the Mining Interpretive Center, north of Big Knife Provincial Park on the way to Camrose followed by a tour of the Augustana campus. The tour of campus included an overview of courses and programs, and a meeting with Augustana professors. After the tour, the group enjoyed some bowling and supper before heading home. On April 6 students from grades 5 - 9 travelled to Wainwright for the school division badminton tournament. The athletes each got to play at least six matches and a lot of our athletes had great success. Several teams were awarded medals at the end of the day. Receiving gold in their age groups were Curtis Penner and Samantha Wold, and Abbigale Fuller and Alyssa Kuefler. Winning silver in their respective age categories were: Tanner Bullee and Josie Kneller, Madelin Rombough and Berlin Schnell, Ryleigh Bunbury and Sydney Renschler and Thayer Bunbury.
