Lineup for the 2015 Port Credit Comedy Festival Announced!

The third edition of the Port Credit Comedy Festival will celebrate stand-up and variety comedy from around the world, February 26th to 28th.

The comedy festival welcomes Acme Comedy Company’s 2003 Funniest Person award-winner, Tim Harmston.

Winning awards has led Tim to appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman and Comedy Central Live at Gotham.

This year the Port Credit Comedy Festival will also feature: Mark Forward, Dave Hemstad, Jen Grant, Nathan MacIntosh, Mary Mack, Kyle Radke, Steve Dylan, Mike Wood, John Park and Dan The One Man Band!

Rapidly growing since 2012, the Port Credit Comedy Festival is distinguished from traditional comedy clubs and other stand-up comedy events. Regular plastic lenses reflect about 8% of light hitting the lenses, so only 92% of available light enters the eye for vision. High index plastic lenses can reflect up to 50 percent more light than regular plastic lenses (approximately 12% of available light), so even less light is available to the eye for vision.

This can be particularly troublesome in low-light conditions, such as when driving at night. Early morning commuters experience it too. But glare from streetlights and headlights are not only bothersome, but dangerous.

Today’s modern anti-reflective coatings can virtually eliminate the reflection of light from eyeglass lenses, allowing 99.5% of available light to pass through the lenses and enter the eye for good vision.

By eliminating reflections, AR coating also makes your eyeglass lenses look less visible so people can see your eyes and facial expressions more clearly without the obstruction of the glare. Anti-reflective glasses are also more attractive, so you can look your best in all lighting conditions.

The visual benefits of lenses with anti-reflective coating include sharper vision with less glare when driving at night and greater comfort during prolonged computer use (compared with wearing eyeglass lenses without AR coating).

A big benefit too is on sunglasses. Putting an anti-reflective coating on sunglasses eliminates glare from sunlight reflecting into your eyes from the back surface of tinted lenses when the sun is behind you. (Generally, AR coating is applied only to the back surface of sunglass lenses because there are no cosmetic or visual benefits to eliminating reflections from the front surface of dark-tinted lenses.)

Most premium anti-reflective coatings include a “hydrophobic” surface layer that prevents water spots from forming and makes the lenses easier to clean. Some AR coatings also include an “oleophobic” surface layer that repels skin oils and makes it easier to remove smudges from the lenses.

Some eyeglass lenses have factory-applied AR coating on both lens surfaces. Other lenses, particularly progressive lenses and other multifocal lenses (i.e., bifocals and trifocals), have the coating applied after the lenses have been customized to your eyeglass prescription by an optical lab.

So, is an anti-reflective coating for you? It really does suit most. It looks nicer, and performs well.

Profiling Roc’n Doc’s Rocking Entertainment Lineup

2015 Port Credit Comedy Festival continued from front cover TIM HARMSTON Tim Harmston was only a year into his career when he won Acme Comedy Company’s 2003 Funniest Person in the Twin Cities contest. After winning, a well-known headliner said to him you’re kind of like an idiot, but with smart material. That winning combination has led Tim to appearances on Late Show with David Letterman, Comedy Central Live at Gotham, the Bob and Tom radio show, and Wisconsin Public Radio. Tim has performed at the Rooftop Aspen Comedy Festival, the Great American Comedy Festival in Norfolk, NE, and the Laughing Skull Comedy Festival in Atlanta.

MARK FORWARD Mark Forward is due to appear in the movie No Stranger Than Love with Alison Brie, Justin Chatwin and Colin Hanks. He’s also been featured on John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show (Comedy Central), The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (CBS), Funny As Hell (HBO) and Just For Laughs: All Access (The Comedy Network). For two seasons Forward was a writer and performer on The Jon Dore Television Show (The Comedy Network/IFC) and Mark can currently be seen on JOKE OR CHOKE on CTV.

Recently, Kyles very own half hour comedy special aired on CTV and THE COMEDY NETWORK to the delight of dozens.

In 2011 Kyle performed sold out shows at the SUDBURY COMEDY FESTIVAL, the HUBCAP COMEDY FESTIVAL and historic MASSEY HALL on New Year’s Eve. He also performed at a lovely COMMUNITY CENTRE somewhere in Northern Ontario.

Kyle made his third trip to the Just For Laughs Festival in July 2012. His 8 minute set at Club Soda will air on three continents but only one planet. 2014 is looking to be no slouch of a year as Kyle will once again be performing at the Just For Laughs festival but also the Halifax and Cottage Country Comedy festivals. 2014 will also have Kyle showcasing his stand -up comedy on CBC, CTV and The Comedy Network for the masses to judge.

Currently, this man called Radke continues his efforts to bring new and better material to the stage. Kyle has focused on being more universal.

He is a man with no angle and nothing to hide except for his numerous addictions and personality disorders.

NATHAN MACINTOSH With his ranty, need to get this out style, Nathan Macintosh is an award winning comedian who offers a deeper, different perspective that’s always fresh and funny. His opinions and thoughts focus on a unique sense of individuality, making him compelling and interesting, while touching on topics most people overlook.

MARY MACK Mack and her mandolin sing-alongs have been featured on the nationally syndicated Bob and Tom Radio Show, XM, Sirius, and Minnesota’s Polka Spotlight.

Nathan has performed at many of the major comedy festivals, including the Halifax Comedy Festival in 2009 and 2012, the Boston Comedy Festival in 2010, and the prestigious ‘Just For Laughs’ comedy festival in 2010 and 2012.

She has performed in the Vancouver Comedy Fest (2007), HBO’s Andy Kaufman Awards (2007), Montreal’s Just For Laughs Festival (2009), and in 2011 was selected for the San Francisco Sketch Fest’s “Dozen,” 12 up and coming headliners performing at the Punch Line throughout the fest.

He has been seen on TV, most recently performing on ‘Gotham Comedy LIVE’ for AX TV, has taped his own half hour Comedy Now! special shown on The Comedy Network/CTV, JFL ‘Talk of the Fest’ Gala shown on The Comedy Network, The 10th Annual Canadian Comedy Awards shown on The Comedy Network, twice on CBC’s ‘The Debaters’ which aired on CBC, an appearance on MuchMusic’s ‘Stars Gone Wild’, ‘Stand Up and Bite Me’ on Bite TV, and had a small role in the critically acclaimed film “The Wait” which premiered at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival and aired on CBC. He has also written for TV, being a story editor for “The Latest Buzz,” which aired on the Family Channel.

Mack had her national TV debut on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham and NBC’s Last Comic Standing (2008) and currently voices the character of Dylan on Fox’s cartoon Golan the Insatiable.

She now divides her time among Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and a camper in the woods.

Nathan has also been heard on radio, having taped multiple episodes of CBC radios “The Debaters”, XM radios “Laugh Attack” and “Chomping at The Bit”.

KYLE RADKE Canadian born and proud Hamiltonian Kyle Radke is entering his 14th year as a professional stand-up comedian.

He has been nominated for multiple Canadian Comedy Awards, including ‘Best Writing’ and ‘Best Taped Performance’, winning one in 2009, and winning the Tim Simms Encouragement Award in 2007.

After his first terrifying and disappointing year of comedy, Kyle slowly began to make a name for himself within the stand-up community. He gradually developed from being barely tolerable to not that bad at comedy clubs and other venues across Canada where Kyle began studying the subjective art of telling penis jokes. Soon Kyle’s efforts paid off with a run of success that earned him a C.O.C.A performer of the year nomination, a nomination for The Tim Sims Encouragement Award and a nomination for The Phil Hartman Award. Kyle won none of these awards and as a result, he sold out to the world of T.V commercials and promptly developed an image disorder.

In 2004 Kyle left T.V. After he put some healthy weight back on, he was one of three Canadians chosen to perform at the SMIRNOFF ICE COMEDY FESTIVAL in Cape Town, South Africa where he developed eight phobias.

In 2005, Kyle Radke won first place in the Homegrown Comedy Championship at the JUST FOR LAUGHS FESTIVAL in Montreal. The victory earned him the honor of performing at the festivals highest profile shows where he was

Delivering smart, insightful pot shots at society in his signature playful and laid-back style, this Kingston native has carved out a name for himself as one of the brightest and funniest young comedians in Canada.

Since leaving his day job in 2005, Dylan has appeared at the Just For Laughs Festival in Toronto and Montreal, the Ha!ifax ComedyFest and the Uptown Waterloo Comedy Festival. He was a finalist in Yuk Yuk’s Great Canadian Laugh Off (2008), and had his own national Comedy Now! With special air on CTV/The Comedy Network in 2011. Dylan is an accomplished Comedy Award-winning and Gemini-nominated writer/producer. COMMUNITY CORNER PTTR plays some eight ball On January 25th, the Paint The Town Red Community Organization held their annual Pool Tournament Fundraiser at The Crooked Cue in Port Credit. All proceeds from the tournament go toward the daylong Canada Day Celebrations on July 1st. This year marks the 11th anniversary for Port Credit Canada Day celebrations.

Over 30 teams of four participated in 8 Ball for race to 7, to place among the final four teams competing for first, second and third place. First place this year was Papa Giuseppe’s followed Natty’s then Ten Restaurant.

The other day a friend asked: “What’s Rotary?” He immediately answered his own question by saying “A Club of old men, right?”

I replied politely “Yes, there are old men, who are Rotarians” not to upset him for his incorrect observation. “However, I think your picture is a bit out of focus.” “Actually, Rotary is a dynamic world-wide organization of women and men.”

SO WHAT IS ROTARY? We are 1.2 million neighbours, friends, professionals and business leaders who come together to create positive, lasting change in our communities and around the world. EVERYTHING`S BETTER IN THE BURBS

By Theresa Baird - Broker Deciding where to buy a home is a big decision if you work in the City of Toronto.

Which direction do you go? North to Barrie, East to Oshawa or West towards Oakville? How long will the commute be to get to and from your work. The question of affordability always plays into the decision of “do I move to Milton, where I can purchase a detached home for $400,000, or do I purchase a one bedroom condo that’s $400,000 only 650 square feet but within walking distance to work.”

Their fundraising efforts provided something extra over the Christmas holidays and some much needed respite, programs and food throughout the year for disadvantaged families in South Etobicoke.

Tim’s wife Robin said that they started this event in 1997 to raise funds for a local church in support of a family in need. Their initial goal was $1000 and at their first event the pub raised over $1,200.

For the last ten years the pub has been donating their funds exclusively to the Salvation Army’s South Etobicoke office at a combined total of $140,000.

Timothy’s Pub continues to be an Etobicoke hot spot all winter. The Meteors held their 11th annual anniversary party and played to a packed house, along with appearances from many different musical guests. Catch the Meteors every Saturday from 4 – 8 p.m.

Recently Timothy’s Pub on Brown’s Line in Etobicoke underwent renovations that have greatly enhanced the appeal to this cozy pub.

How to split your income (and taxes) with others?

By Lindsay Howe The most romantic day of the year is nearly here. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to celebrate love and give a gift that will last a lifetime!

While roses are pretty and chocolates are sweet, diamonds symbolize everlasting love. What better way to profess your love than surprising her with a sparkling diamond to make her feel treasured and admired?

Not long ago, income splitting was considered a dirty term in the world of tax. It implied engaging in risky strategies leading to tax avoidance or evasion.

But changes in the legislation slowly make the strategy of balancing income between family members possible. Here is a brief look at current options of splitting income with spouses and children.

Whether you choose a diamond engagement ring, a pendant, or earrings, you will sweep her off her feet! A simply beautiful heart shaped or diamond pendant will make this Valentine’s all the more memorable. Every time she looks at it your diamond gift she is reminded of your love. 1. In 2009 pension splitting was introduced for seniors, whereby a higher income spouse can split up to 50% of the pension income. The eligible pension includes almost all annuity payments and payments from pension plans, except for Old Age Security, Canada Pension Plan, and IRA (individual pension plan received from US).

There are so many decisions that go into choosing the right piece of diamond jewelry for your spouse beginning with: white gold, rose gold, or yellow gold. Examine a wide variety of diamonds; browse unique shapes, cuts and designs to discover the perfect diamond match for your counterpart.

2. Beginning in 2014 tax year, couples with children under 18 can split up to $50,000 for the maximum benefit of $2,000 in tax savings. It is becoming effective this filing season, so it is very important to check if you can benefit from this strategy. Generally, couples whose income fall into different tax brackets should explore this route.

3. It is possible for spouses to split investment income through joint ownership. However, the rule requires that investment income follow the source of income. This means that a person whose earnings are used for investment reports that investment income. If both spouses earn similar income, splitting investment income in half is often justified. But, if one spouse makes significantly more, interest, dividends and capital gains will be attributed to the spouse who is the source of funds. One way around it, is to have the higher income earner loan money to the spouse with lower income and charge interest prescribed by CRA (currently 1% annually).

Then, investment income will belong to the spouse in the lower tax bracket.

4. Splitting investment income with children is subject to more complicated rules. You can transfer assets to your children, however, if your child is under 18, any interest or dividends earned on these assets will have to be reported on your tax return. Only capital gains can be taxed in your child’s name, likely attracting considerably less tax. If your child is over 18, then investment income will not be attributed back to the parent. However, you have to be careful when transferring investments to your children of any age. Cash can be gifted with no tax consequences, however, transferring real property or investment portfolio will be treated by CRA as sale, and parents may need to realize capital gain on the transfer.

5. RESP is another form of income splitting with your children. Any investment income earned on registered educational plans will be taxed on your children’s tax returns, even though the funds were contributed by parents. Maximum lifetime contribution limit per child is $50,000.

6. Business owners can hire family members and pay them through the company. As long as the compensation is for the work actually performed and at fair market rate, this is an effective way of leveling income. Make sure you compensate your family members the same way, as if they were not related to you.

The new year is always a good time to explore new strategies. Consider the above when planning your finances in 2015.

So why did the stock market go up so much? Point one tells us that the Bank of Canada believes falling oil prices are very bad for the economy. Is it not true that companies may struggle to perform well in a poor economy?

Point two means companies can afford to expand to support sales in a poor economy. This seems silly until you get to point 3. Point 3 suggests that consumers will be able to continue on their spending spree buying houses and cars and increasing their indebtedness that is already at historic highs.

All through December 2014 media piece after media piece reminded us that Canadian consumer debt is at an all time high, so borrowing some more makes sense (not really)? Point 4 reminds us that with a devalued dollar, exporters will be able to increase their sales but consumers will pay more for just about everything we buy because few goods are manufactured completely in Canada.

Surprise! Surprise!

Earlier this week I had been enjoying the radio ads telling us with humour that surprises are not always good. Checking your parent’s browsing history, cold sores, etc. And then along comes the Bank of Canada cutting the overnight interest rate Wednesday morning. By noon the TSX index was up over 300 points and by Friday morning it was up over 500 points in total. And everyone was surprised. But was it a good surprise?

Let us review what the Bank of Canada was saying and see if we can understand why company shares were suddenly so much more valuable.

Seemingly, not the best set of reasons to quickly buy Canadian shares or get bullish on the future of earnings at large Canadian companies, which is what is supposed to drive share prices. So what’s up? Well your own portfolio might not be driven by use of debt but the market as a whole is.

Most professional managers, investment banks, hedge funds, aggressive investors etc. all use debt to support their activities in the equity markets.

The Bank of Canada announcement meant that investors using debt were going to see even larger profits if the market continues its upward trend.

They wanted a piece of that, so in they jump. However, debt outstanding against investments, so called margin debt, is at all time highs and going higher. In the United States margin debt is higher in relative terms than it has been since 1929 and all investors know what happened to the stock markets in 1929.

-The Bank of Canada believes low oil prices are overall negative for the Canadian economy (the price of oil has already fallen a further $10 since coming to this conclusion) and if oil stays where it is the central bank expects the economy to grow even slower than it had forecast.

-The central bank was trying to push down the interest rates charged by Canada’s big banks, making it cheaper for companies to borrow money to grow their businesses.

-A rate cut by the central bank likely means lower interest rates for variable rate mortgages, lines of credit and other loans based on the prime rate, which will likely boost consumer spending.

Now my articles are supposed to be about you and your nestegg not about the professionals. What does this all mean to YOU? If you are a trader, jump in with the rest. This cut in the overnight rate signals continued cheap debt and is going to create volatility and upper momentum to stock prices.

This will remain true until the sentiment turns to worry about prices and debt. Make risky profitable trades while you can. If however, you are a long term investor looking to buy companies at fair prices without borrowing to do so, stay out of the buying foray. If you have been in the markets the last 5 years and have profited handsomely by the increase in share prices, take advantage of the rising prices to take some profits and/or rebalance your portfolio. Sure there is not much you want to buy with your profits but that is an indicator that prices are high across many sectors and different types of investments.

-The loonie immediately fell by more than 1.5 cents against the U.S. dollar.
