An incredible ten years has passed since RJ Entertainment Publishing launched the Village Times. The first issue of the Streetsville Village Times was only eight pages and the paper was published quarterly. Since then we have grown as a community-based publisher that produces several community newspapers, magazines and specialty publications in Mississauga and Etobicoke.

RJ Entertainment Publishing’s publications now include six local community newspapers, community business directories, the Mississauga Waterfront Festival Program and an award-winning event program – The Tim Hortons Southside Shuffle Blues and Jazz Festival Program.

Our group of community newspapers includes the Streetsville Village Times, Port Credit Village Times, Clarkson’s Corners, Malton Compass, Village of Islington Times and Lakeshore Villages.

Working with local Business Improvement Association’s (BIA’s), our publications focus on informing local residents with information on upcoming events, established businesses and community initiatives that positively impact the local area.

In the past ten years, the Village Times has been a part of many special events and changes in Streetsville and Port Credit. The Port Credit BIA is gearing up for the 2015 Farmers Market By: Lindsay Howe It is that time of year again, the Port Credit Farmers Market returns to the village on Saturday, June 6th. The Farmers Market will be in full swing every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. You can enjoy fresh produce, grown locally in Ontario all summer long, until October 10th. The Port Credit Farmers Market features weekly entertainment, from live musical performances, to cooking demonstrations and workshops.

On Saturday, June 6th beginning at 12:00 p.m., Streetsville will be celebrating its Official Opening Ceremony! The ceremony will begin directly following the Bread and Honey Parade, happening along Queen Street South. Mayor Bonnie Crombie and other local politicians will lead the welcoming ceremony to formally celebrate the opening of the beautifully rejuvenated Streetsville Village Square. Come join in the celebration and rejoice in the official opening of the town square. The festivities continue with live entertainment and talented buskers in the square from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. This includes musical performances by The David Leask Duo and the Christian James Band. Bread and Honey will wrap up on Sunday, June 7th in the Square with an Old Fashioned Car Show from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The square is an especially happening place during the festivals and events happening this summer including Paint the Town Red, The Mississauga Waterfront Festival, Port Credit Artfest, Buskerfest and the Tim Hortons Southside Shuffle.

The Streetsville Lions Friends and Farmers’ Market Returns By: Lindsay Howe The Streetsville Lions Friends and Farmers’ Market will start back up again beginning June 13th and will remain open every Saturday until Thanksgiving weekend. The Streetsville Lions Friends and Farmers’ Market is open between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The market is located in Centre Plaza, at 128 Queen Street South.

This summer Port Street Market in the square will be hosting live musical entertainment every Saturday and Sunday from the last weekend in June, through the end of August. You can expect musical performances from Ascension, Blush, Heather Brissenden, Shannon & Jay, Phil & John, Mandi Galer, Paul & Curtis, Hurricane Hill and Stacey Renee. Peel Cup Success Early May saw five hockey teams compete in the Peel Cup Charity Hockey Tournament to raise funds for local charities. All games were played at the Vic Johnston Community Centre. The tournament is generously sponsored

COMMUNITY CORNER | PORT CREDIT South Mississauga Math Centre Hosts Grand Opening Celebration Mathnasium of Lakeview hosted a Grand Opening celebration on Saturday, May 9, 2015. This event was for students and families in the Lakeshore and Mississauga South community, to have a fun and informal afternoon where they could find out more about how Mathnasium teaches math in fun and effective ways that absolutely makes sense to each student.

Mathnasium is located at 734 Lakeshore Road East (just west at Cawthra).

Charles Sousa announced investment to kick-start Lakeview revitalization project Charles Sousa, MPP for Mississauga South, announced funding for the first phase of Lakeview revitalization project which, when completed, will transform the city’s lakeshore for the benefit of everyone in Mississauga.

The $450,000 investment will kick-start the project, eventually allowing people access to the western pier on former OPG lands and greater connectivity to lakefront trails.

Forest Avenue Fun Fair Celebrates 30 Years!

By Kelly Hardy Forest Avenue Public School, located in Port Credit, will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of their Fun Fair on Friday, June 5. The school’s signature fundraiser has become a beloved fixture on the school year calendar.

“Before many students ever attend their first day here, they’ve been to a Fun Fair,” says Teresa Fox, co-chair of this year’s Fun Fair Committee. “It’s a party that the whole community is invited to. There’s now parents who attended the school when they were young who are bringing their own kids.

It’s amazing to see that we’ve had that kind of staying power.” The Grey Cup will be coming to the Forest Avenue Public School’s Fun Fair and the whole community is invited to come out and have their picture taken with this iconic Canadian trophy. While the Fun Fair is a fundraising event, there will be no charge to get up and close personal with the Grey Cup, it’s open to all.

This year, on Thursday, May 14th, over 115 Realtors and Staff from Keller Williams Realty Solutions in Port Credit descended upon the Trinity Anglican Church on Stavebank Avenue. The day’s event included painting the entire inside of the church, steam cleaning all of the carpets, dusting the pews, and cleaning and organizing the lower meeting rooms.

The outside of the church was also given a transformation. The trees were trimmed, gardens raked and all the fall and winter’s debris was removed. It took gallons upon gallons of paint, supplies and a lot of muscle. The Trinity Anglican Church was overwhelmed with emotion watching all of the love, hard work and dedication that was put into that day’s initiative. This project could not have been accomplished without Keller’s RED DAY’s committee headed up by Kate Peterson, our local sponsors, and the dedication of Keller Williams Realty’s associates and staff.

It was truly amazing for Keller Williams Realtors to have this opportunity to give back to their community.

Last fall the nine Mississauga Rotary Clubs joined together and decided to provide educational assistance to young girls in Nepal. Disease – the International Rotary project is the eradication of Polio World Wide. Hunger, poverty, lack of clean water. In 2013/2014 the nine clubs organized a project providing wells for a village in Zambia.

My daughter had been an exchange student to Denmark and I felt obliged to accept the invitation of the members to attend some of their meetings.

After a few meetings and interviews, I was inducted into the Rotary Club.

I soon realized that I had made a very big mistake becoming a Rotarian.

You may ask: “Here is person who is supposed to write a positive article about Rotary to encourage people to look into what Rotary is all about and his first statement is that he made a mistake?” Well, the mistake I made was that I should have joined much earlier. Joining a Rotary Club is joining 33,000 other clubs and having 1.2 million acquaintances. You may respond, what does that mean? I realized the power of Rotary on a personal level when my dad had passed away in Holland. I was there for two weeks and decided to visit the local Rotary Club in Haarlem. Now bear in mind I had just joined Rotary and did not know very much about the organization. The members of my club had suggested I do a “make-up visit” at the local club and that it would be a good experience. I was somewhat leery about the advice. What was I supposed to do? I did not know anybody in that club.

My dad had never been a Rotarian. To my surprise many of the members of the club in Haarlem knew my dad. It was very nice to meet so many of his friends and receive such a warm welcome. After that experience I made it a steadfast rule to do make-ups – visiting other Clubs - wherever possible.

I have never been disappointed and have learned a lot about other cultures and what to visit. There is always a club close to your work or your home.

Youth As the world’s largest private provider of international scholarships, The Rotary Foundation helps 1,000 students annually. Rotary also partners with seven universities, providing opportunities to earn a master’s degree in peace and conflict resolution.

Rotary is also known for the many opportunities it offers for youth, whether it’s Camp Enterprise, Rotary Youth Leadership Award or Adventure in Citizenship. A program promoting international understanding and peace is the Youth International Exchange Program, where students between 15 to 19 years of age study for one year in another country. What an experience!

Kendellhurst Academy Offers a Holistic Approach to Environmental Education By: Lindsay Howe

Field Trip to the Credit River to Study Local Ecosystems Last month each classroom at Kendellhurst Academy Grade School (Kindergarten to Grade 8) visited the Credit River by Vic Johnston Park to learn about biodiversity and their surrounding environment. The students took part in a variety of fun, hands-on, educational activities. The Kindergarten students for example went on a nature scavenger hunt along the path by the Credit River to discover several items from a list. They also had the opportunity to learn about tree planting and why tree planting is so important to restore natural habitats.

John Kendell (Kendellhurst Academy Co-Director/ Owner) lead the planting excursion and showed students the mature trees that were planted by the Credit River Anglers Association and other volunteers in past years.

John is the voluntary President and Chairman of the Credit River Anglers Association (www.craa.on.ca). He is renowned in the community for his commitment to the restoration of the Credit River. John has taken part in hundreds of rehabilitation projects, including raising nearly five million dollars in his efforts for the reforestation of half a million trees. Additionally, John recently received the National Recreational Fisheries Award in Ottawa from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans for his conservation work and the Timothy Street medal presented by Mississauga-Streetsville MP Brad Butt.

The Stream of Dreams Mural Society visited Kendellhurst Academy on May 13th to teach students about our water and fish habitat and how we can make changes to help protect our streams, rivers, lakes and ocean. Each student took part in an educational and art infused workshop.

During their excursion, Kendellhurst students also had the opportunity to explore the natural habitat and species including fish, insects, birds and other animals. They learned about pollution prevention and the importance of protecting our health and drinking water. Kendellhurst Academy works closely with The Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) to support their mission of restoring and managing the natural resources of the Credit River Watershed.

The dedicated volunteers from the Stream of Dreams Mural Society taught a learning workshop about watershed pollution, educating students about where our water comes from and how we can keep our water clean to protect our fish habitat. Next, the students each had the opportunity to explore their creative abilities and paint a wooden dream fish.

The dream fish were joined together to create a 3D mural. The colourful fish mural was put up on May 19th, lining the fence of Kendellhurst Academy School on Church Street. The mural is already capturing the attention of community members, who can’t help but stop to admire the beautifully painted fish. The dream fish symbolize a future of clean and healthy water.

When the students see their unified fish along the fence, it reminds them about the importance of protecting the environment and valuing our local ecosystems.

In addition to being passionate about their school community, Kendellhurst students, staff and parents are also passionate about protecting the environment! In their classroom hatchery, Kendellhurst Students annually raise and stock 100 Atlantic salmon fry in the Credit River! Students raise the Atlantic salmon eggs in a classroom hatchery over the winter and monitor the growth and development of the eggs as they hatch and become baby salmon. Kendellhurst Academy supports several environmental initiatives including reforestation work done through Credit River Anglers Association, the Bring Back the Salmon Project and Credit Valley Conservation’s Stream of Dreams program.

JUSTUS: A musical mainstay in Streetsville since 1975

We have performed for the folks in the surrounding area of Mississauga, and places beyond, for the last 40 years. It has been a great ride, an exhilarating ego trip and a pleasure to have had the opportunity to share our love of music with everyone who attended our concerts and shows. This has been our” Best of Times” and that is why we have called our final show “The Best of Times”. Justus will be finishing a great run of 40 years of singing enjoyment in October 2015.

It all began in September 1975 when, after a United Church youth choir practice, which I was leading, a few friends of mine sat down in a local coffee shop. After much discussion we struck on a plan to expand our horizons to become a community chorus with no structured guidelines as to what we could and could not include in our future repertoire. We formed a committee, chose a name for the group, put an ad in the local paper- the Streetsville Review- called a first rehearsal and waited to see who showed up. We knew that all the kids from the youth group would come, and were pleasantly surprised when several adults appeared on the scene as well. With some financial backing from the Streetsville Lions Club, we managed to buy some music, get a venue in which to practice and started to sing. By the end of the first year we had learned enough songs that we could present a concert which was held in the United Church. We had about 30 singers and instrumentalist in the group by then. There were a couple of ideas that I felt were important in making this group a successful musical group. First of all - lots of fun and no stress (there were no auditions, if you liked to sing, come along): secondly - in order to command an audience we had to look at them and smile at them while we sang, and the only way you can do that is to have the music memorized. We have been performing that way ever since. Always smiling, always.

In 1976 Justus joined forces with the Streetsville Lions Club for Minstrel Memories, a spring fixture in the community for 25 years. The Lions retired from the entertainment business in 1978 and Justus launched its own version of a musical review in 1979 and called it Live On Stage. In 1981 we moved our venue from the Streetsville High School gym to the Blue Flame Room at the Consumers Gas building on Burnhamthorpe Rd. We remained there until 1988 when we moved to the new Meadowvale Theatre.

In the early days of the show the group was fairly small and did not have enough of a repertoire to do an entire show. We held auditions so local musicians could try out for a place on our stage. This proved to be a resounding success, as over the years more than 100 local talents got to strut their stuff in Live On Stage.

In the early 80’s the organization decided to put some of the profits from our shows back into the community – specifically the schools. The Streetsville Musicorp Music Awards and Bursaries program was set up to acknowledge top musical talent in the local Streetsville and Meadowvale area schools. Certificates and monetary gifts have been given out to hundreds of deserving students since the program was inaugurated. By 2014, over 1000 awards had been given out in 8 elementary schools and 6 high schools averaging 40 awards per year and worth about $3000. Bursaries, with a value of $500, were presented to 3 individual musicians each year– many of whom pursued music at a post-secondary level.

Justus has represented Streetsville and Mississauga in many venues. In the early years we sang at Ontario Place, Pioneer Village, Orillia Summer Festival, Peterborough Waterfest, Niagara Wine Festival, and on a Mississauga Day, at a Toronto Blue Jays game. In 2003 the group took its Canada Show on the road through Northern Ontario for 10 days encompassing the July 1st weekend, and credit landing shopping centre in 2005 several of the group traveled to Japan to perform in the Canada Pavilion on Mississauga 224 lakeshore road west unit 6 Day at the World Exposition in Aichi. Latterly, spring road trips to the Belleville/Kingston area and mississauga, ontario L5H 1G6 Collingwood were taken. On those trips we joined forces with a local charity in the community. We w w w. p o r t c r e d i t d e n t a l . c o m offered to do a concert for them at no charge to them which allowed them to retain their net ticket sales as a fund raiser for their cause. Within the local scene, the past 24 years we have hosted a Valentines Tea at Eden United Church, for 250 seniors from our community, who enjoyed a free concert and refreshments provided by Justus. The bonus was that Valentine’s Day is our favourite Mayor’s birthday and she was always able to attend and celebrate with us and our audience. We have also participated in the entertainment at the Streetsville Bread and Honey Festival since 1975, the Canada Day celebrations since they began in the late 90’s and Christmas around the Cenotaph almost from day 1 when Streetsville had its own Christmas Parade.

Live On Stage 2008 was the final April show for the group, however our music lived on. The Living Arts Centre’s Hammerson Hall, and then the Meadowvale Theatre, were the venues for our annual Christmas concerts in December. We entertained many local groups (service clubs, churches and retirement homes) over the past seven years which kept us quite busy.

During this, our last, year we have been celebrating the final concerts at some of our mainstay venues: Our Kind of Christmas at Meadowvale Theatre in December; the Seniors Valentine’s Tea in February; Huttonville Seniors dinner sponsored by the Huttonville Lions Club; and within the next few months Justus will celebrate our 40th performance on the main stage at the 43rd annual Bread and Honey Festival on the first weekend in June; Canada Day celebrations on the Village Square stage on July 1; and finally our last concert at Meadowvale Theatre on the first weekend of October. Forty years seems like a half of a lifetime, but when you are singing, having fun, and enjoying the moment, it’s not too hard to look back and say that these have been “The Best of Times”. Port Credit loses long time family business

Budget announcement at local brewery

After more than 50 years serving Port Credit/Mississauga, Hickox Fine Jewellery will be closing their doors forever in the next few weeks. Hickox has been a fixture on the Lakeshore since 1951. The Ballard’s purchased the store in 1989 and Ted, Norma and daughter Lori have continued the tradition.

Mississauga South MPP Charles Sousa unveiled the 2015 Ontario budget theme and logo at the Old Credit Brewery in Port Credit on April 24th.

Even though Old Credit beer is a favourite at Queens Park, the budget added a one cent per bottle tax that kicks in this November and will increase another penny-a-bottle annually until 2018, eventually totalling a dollar per case of 24.

With Ted’s passing earlier this year, Norma and Lori have decided to close the store.

Norma has seen significant changes to the jewellery industry over the years. When they started in the business, Norma remembers gold at about $100 an ounce and now it is just over $1,200 an ounce!

The historic brewery located at 6 Queen Street West in Port Credit, has been with Ontario Legislation Awards for its craft beers. The brewery competes against beers from all across Ontario and it is an honour to receive the prestigious Ontario Legislation Award.

Lori said “With Dad gone it is just not the same. We will miss our many loyal customers, some families who have shopped here for three generations!”

Norma said “It has been a pleasure serving the community and sharing in their special occasions; when people shop for jewellery they are shopping for engagements, anniversaries, birthdays and other special occasions, generally their happiest times.”

The Old Credit Brewing Company may be small but it makes a quality product and is respected nationally for several beers.

Hickox Fine Jewellery has kicked off their “massive retirement and closing sale”. Lori says “We have never had a sale on this scale and we plan to clear everything out. I look forward to seeing our many friends and customers to say good bye one last time.”

Keep Pool Safety in Mind this Summer

Pools can provide many hours of summer fun and cool relief from hot weather. Water can also be dangerous for kids if parents do not take the proper precautions.

If you currently have, or are thinking of buying a home with a pool, here are some safety tips.

To prevent litter, the easiest, greenest, single action one can ever take is to not litter. From car windows, on streets, sidewalks, storefront window ledges and parking lots, in parks, trees, waterways – litter is prolific and 55 per cent of littering is deliberate.

Litter is like a magnet. Its presence attracts more. Very quickly an impression of neglect and lack of caring is formed and, research confirms, drags down property values and tourism rates. No one should aspire to littering. It is a huge character flaw, a proven anti-social marker. Whether you are the smoker flicking your butts all over or the java junkie, leaving coffee cups everywhere and anywhere, the chewing gum-spitter or the tosser of fast food wrappers and remains, you need to know this is littering.

What is the best way to keep my child safe around swimming pools?

An adult should actively watch children at all times while they are in a pool. A child can drown in less than 2 inches (6 centimeters) of water³. For infants and toddlers, an adult should be in the water and within arm’s reach, providing “touch supervision”. For older children, an adult should be paying constant attention and free from distractions, like talking on the phone, socializing, tending household chores, or drinking alcohol. The supervising adult must know how to swim.

Three requirements to reduce litter: 1) Do not to litter.

2) From door to street, keep your property free of litter.

3) Ask someone you know who litters to stop.

The Port Credit BIA employs one dedicated soul, who many recognize as our “Green Team”, and relies on a volunteer “Trash Walking Mom” (look her up on Facebook) to keep our streets litter free. Both are constantly battling a war against cigarette butts, popular coffee cups and so much more. Trash Walking Mom, Cindy Wilding, also leads the Forest Avenue Eco Club where children learn about preventing litter and taking care of the world. Recently, she had the kids decorate old cans and we will be placing them around PC, focusing on the main culprits of cigarette butt litter. It’s a positive message and hopefully gets everyone thinking about solutions to littering.

POOL RULES If you have a pool, insist that the following rules are followed:

• Keep toys away from the pool when the pool is not in use.

• Empty blow-up pools after each use.

• No tricycles or other riding toys at poolside.

• No Electrical appliances near the pool.

• No diving in a pool that is not deep enough.

• No running on the pool deck.

• If there is thunder or lightning, stay out of the pool.

• Have readily accessible reaching or throwing assists, a working

phone and first aid kit.

Cindy encourages everyone to pick up three pieces of trash anytime you’re out and about. Then head over to her page and post a pic of your bounty with hashtags #litterfreePC and #Take3. With a little bit of awareness and effort, we can all keep Port Credit litter free!

POOL FENCES Children can climb out a window, through a doggy door, or sneak out a door to get to the back yard and the pool. To prevent small children from entering the pool area on their own, there should be a fence that completely surrounds the pool or spa. Combined with the watchful eyes of an adult, a fence is the best way to protect your child and other children who may visit or live nearby.

Pool Fences should also: • Be climb-resistant and should not have anything alongside it (such as lawn furniture) that can be used to climb it.

• Be a least 4 feet high and have no footholds or handholds that could help a child climb it.

• Have no more than 4 inches between vertical slats. Chain-link fences are very easy to climb and are not recommended as pool fences. If they must be used, the diamond shape should not be bigger than 1 ¾ inches.

• Have a gate that is well maintained is self-closing and self-latching. It should only open away from the pool. The latches should be higher than a child can reach – 54 inches from the bottom of the gate.

• For above-ground pools always keep children away from steps and ladders.

When the pool is not in use, lock or remove the ladders to prevent access by children.

Other protection products, when used with an “isolation” fence, may be of some benefit; however, these are not substitutes for adequate fencing.

These may include the following: • Automatic pool covers (motorized covers operated by a switch). Pool covers should cover the entire pool so that a child can’t slip under them.

Make sure there is no standing water on top of the pool cover. Be aware that floating solar covers are not safety covers.

• Door alarms.

• Doors to the house that are self-closing/self-latching.

• Window guards.

• Pool alarms.

The Mississauga Waterfront Festival (MWF) kicks off with a country music extravaganza when the Credit goes Country. Performers include Port Credit local Marshall Dane, Ty Baynton, Nashville North’s DJ Johnny Rivex and Triple Threat line dancers. Headlining the evening is Juno Nominated Female Country Artist of the Year Kira Isabella. The show starts Friday, June 12, 2015 at 6:00pm at the Port Credit Memorial Park.

With over 20 vendors, including Rodney’s Oysters, Gushi Chicken, InspirAsian and Penny Lou Lou Sweet and Treats, this delicious feature is sure to whet your appetite.

Saturday welcomes many new attractions like a Monster Mural for attendees to colour in and bring to life; the Sports Zone with a rock climbing wall, sumo wrestling, obstacle course and trampoline demonstrations; and an Ontario Dock Dogs competition where high flying pooches will do amazing feats!

The Insauga Roller Jam - a fan favourite from last year – returns on Saturday night. The iconic Port Credit Arena will be transformed into a roller rink with music provided by DJ D Smooth. The fun begins at 6:00pm and goes until 11:00 pm. Limited quantities of roller skates will be available for rent.

Mississauga is one of 16 host municipalities in the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area (GTHA) for the Pan Am Games (July 10–26) and Parapan Am Games (Aug 7–15). The Hershey Centre will be known during Games time as the Mississauga Sports Centre where Mississauga will host seven sport competitions: judo, karate, taekwondo, wrestling, goalball, powerlifting and wheelchair rugby. Saturday night entertainment pays homage to classic rock when three tribute bands grace the stage for a Rockin River Revue. The show starts at 7:00 pm with Simply Queen, followed by Desire and closing the evening will be The Blushing Brides.

On Sunday, the Mississauga Waterfront Festival welcomes the TO2015 Pan Am Torch Relay. Former Mayor Hazel McCallion will arrive at the Festival via barge and proceed with the Pan Am torch through the park. The torch relay is expected to arrive at approximately 1:00 pm.

Port Credit’s Buskerfest Celebrates 10th Anniversary

This year there will be more strolling and statue performers than ever before! One of the new statue performers, Blanco from Berlin Germany acts as a human canvas.

Children will have the unique opportunity to “make a master piece of him!”

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Port Credit’s most electric festival, Buskerfest. The Port Credit BIA proudly presents amazing shows from around the world.

This three-day talent extraordinaire is happening all weekend long from August 21st to 23rd in downtown Port Credit. Buskers will be invading the streets, showing off their rare talents and skilled circus artistry. This year there will be 10 performance areas, with over 40 international performers!

The ever-popular Busker Academy (located in the Gazebo in Memorial Park) will feature a variety of workshops on Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Children can learn some of the tricks of the trade from the talented buskers themselves! The young buskers in training can learn how to stilt walk, make balloon animals, walk a tightrope, juggle, mime, hula hoop, clown around and so much more. Busker Academy is recommended for kids 6 and up.

This year we have performers from - Poland, The Netherlands, Thailand, Germany, Italy, Australia, Japan and of course all over North America. Also new this year, there will be a Twitter Contest sponsored by Yelp. The contest will determine which buskers will perform in the Xtreme Finale happening on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. to wrap up the festival. The top 10 performers, voted by you on Twitter will return to put on a spectacular show like no other. The Xtreme Finale is a culmination of all the performers in one big fabulous show. These gutsy street performers will perform magnificent stunts, each act more enthralling than the next!

In commemoration of this special 10th anniversary celebration, there will be more to experience at Buskerfest than ever before! A 10th anniversary performance area (aka ‘pitch’) has been added on Hwy 10. Featured on that pitch will be The Catwall, from Quebec. Watch this group of phenomenal acrobats literally bounce off the walls! Their stage area will be set up with two trampolines, with a wall in between. You won’t want to miss out on this remarkable performance. Rest assured that your all-time favourite buskers will also be returning this year to perform some new incredible acts.

Live street theatre will be happening across the village. You do not want to miss out on a full weekend of family fun and entertainment! While Buskerfest is a free event, tipping at the shows is highly recommended so please give what you can. You can also support the acts by buying a CD. Registration for the Streetsville Hockey League (SHL) 2015/2016 season is well underway.

The Streetsville Derby’s is a select hockey program that is offered through the Streetsville Hockey League. Select hockey is the next level up from the House League Program. The Streetsville Derby’s can be a rewarding experience for your child and your family. Not only are the Streetsville Derby’s a fantastic hockey experience, it’s also a great life experience. The players and parents often develop friendships that can last a lifetime. The goal is to have a Select Streetsville Derby’s team at the 2009, 2008 and 2007 birth years.

The Streetsville Derby’s will be playing in the Mississauga Hockey League.

Each age group/division has several tiers, so teams will be placed in a division that will best suit the team. Tyke players will play in a group that will be labelled “Select”.

With spring in My Step

By Ric Cooper, Ric’s Recollection Finally spring has sprung after what seemed the longest and one of the worst winters in recent memory.

That long winter did have one benefit as far as vinyl enthusiasts were concerned; more time to sit and enjoy a full album of music!

Spring and summer tend to be a time when people spend less time indoors listening to music. The tunes tend to be background music while you’re sitting on the deck enjoying the weather and your favourite beverage.

Another spring pass time is the plethora of garage sales and outdoor flea markets. For a record collector, these sales can be a goldmine but usually they’re just a waste of time. You’ll be lucky to get a few playable records out of the hundreds that you have to go through. Moldy, scratched records are the norm. So are the Bing Crosby, Johnny Mathis, Don Ho and countless others that fill the boxes (no offence to the fans of these artists!). Finding an original pressing of most 60’s rock bands in near mint condition is almost impossible. I find it strange that when someone does have some “gems” that they haven’t tried bringing them to the store to get a fair payment instead of the $1 each usually paid at these sales. I have paid $600 for a single record for re-sale.

Granted it was “super rare” and in fantastic condition but these rarities are out there! Quite often I get phone calls regarding evaluating collections or people just wondering “how much is my record worth?” Unfortunately, I don’t have time to do evaluations, and not to sound crass, but what’s in it for me? If you think you do have some REALLY GOOD CONDITION rock, blues or small combo jazz records then give me a call to set up an appointment to bring them into the store. I can guarantee that I won’t offer just a buck a piece! I’m not guaranteeing that you’ll get rich but …who knows!

Import records tend to be more sought after as they often have different graphics on the cover and different song listings. “One hit wonders” carry the misconception that they are automatically rare. Not so. There is no set formula for making a LP rare and valuable but just because the band “didn’t make it” commercially does not make it sought after. Many of these, apart from the hit, are just unlistenable.

I’ll offer a few final words of advice to both the seller and collector. Sellers, if you have really clean records from the 60’s forward, make an effort to get to the store for your best value. Buyers, collect what you like and be nice to the seller. After all, it is part of their (DNA) life history and something that meant a lot to them.

Enjoy the summer, shop local and keep Port Credit clean. We all benefit by being nice to each other.

The Official Opening celebrations will begin with a FREE two-hour performance by Johnny Max at the Village Square on Friday, June 5th, from 7pm to 9pm. The Official Opening Ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 6th, at the Village Square, from 12pm-12:30pm and will include the Streetsville Cadet Band, the Streetsville Legion Colour Guard, and Justus.

After the ceremony, catch the great live bands performing until 3pm, as well as buskers along Main Street and Queen Street. On Sunday, June 7th, don’t miss the great antique car show at the Village Square from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm! Risk Capacity is your financial ability to take on the risk. Risk as a concept is about exposure to uncertain outcomes. In investing, the common measure of risk is the volatility of the return experienced. The riskier an investment the more variable the returns will be. Risk Capacity can be thought of as your ability to accept variable outcomes. We can further narrow this down, by accepting that it is generally not a problem to experience too much return from our investments. The more the money, the merrier we will be. Therefore, from a practical sense, Risk Capacity can be thought of as your ability to accept negative returns of unknown size and frequency in the future. In purchasing terms, can you afford to take the risk?

Value For Money Investing means we wish to allocate and use our hardearned resources in order to improve investment outcomes in a continuous and sustainable way at a fair and equitable price. In other words, achieve good investment returns AND receive fair value for the services provided.

The path forward is Advice For a Fee financial planning.

Financial Planning before Investing!

In a previous article, I attempted to clarify, what a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ does. It was a long list of things including but not limited to helping people with cash flow analysis and budgeting, goal planning, debt management, insurance and risk management to protect your income and dependants, employer contributory pension plan or group RSP allocations, estate planning, taxes, career, life planning, college and university funding, buying a home, retirement projections and anything else that comes along.

I went on to differentiate these activities from investment management.

In my goal to separate these two very important but distinctly different activities, I may have left too big of an information gap and not been clear in how investing is dependent on financial planning. I left you hanging with “Certainly investment management is related to financial planning but is distinct from it. We believe strongly that investment management should not be commenced without financial planning.” So, why do we believe strongly that investment management should not be commenced without financial planning? Well it has to do with risk. More specifically Risk Capacity.

If you are retired or near retirement, in order to determine whether you can accept future negative returns, it is necessary to evaluate when and what the returns will be used for. If you spend $60,000 per year and your pensions, CPP and OAS provide you with $60,000 or more, you could be considered to have an unlimited Risk Capacity as it relates to your portfolio.

Since you do not NEED the returns, you have the ability to accept any and all future negative returns. However, if you spend $60,000 per year and your other incomes only provide $20,000 then your portfolio will need to consistently provide $40,000 per year. Negative returns in the future will impact your ability to maintain that $40,000 per year. Depending on how many assets you have and a host of other factors, your Risk Capacity could be very little or very great.

This is why Financial Planning is absolutely essential for retirees or near retirees. Unless your Risk Capacity is immediately determinable as unlimited, it is necessary to carefully evaluate your future spending and your future incomes from non-portfolio sources to determine your Risk Capacity. How can you build the proper portfolio to deliver the necessary funds as needed and at the right time throughout your lifetime, without determining acceptable future results and the frequency and size of negative returns? And it is not just any financial plan you need, it is a Cash Flow based plan that is required.

If you made some investments through an advisor in the last decade or so, you have probably been asked to answer or fill out a questionnaire. It contained questions like – “When faced with a major investment decision, are you more focused on the possible losses or the possible gains?”

OR “Investments can go up or down in value and experts often say you should be prepared to weather a downturn. By how much could the total value of all of your investments go down before you would begin to feel uncomfortable?” …and your answers were used to suggest a portfolio allocation to you. The bulk of the questions on these questionnaires are aimed at assessing your Risk Tolerance. In other words, they help your advisor assess how you will react to the ups and downs of the products or investments that you will purchase.

Many advisors when asked to do some financial planning will perform a Goal-Based financial plan. Goal-Based planning will generally work well for younger accumulators. It will help determine what you need to do to get where you want to be and help you with what is necessary to get there. Its weakness in portfolio planning for retirees is that Goal Based planning will generally not provide a good Risk Capacity assessment of the negative outcomes. It will tend to report the Risk Capacity as the risk “necessary” to achieve the goals not the capacity to sustain the negative future outcomes.

If you are a retiree or near retiree, get a financial plan in place and stick to cash flow based planning. If you are young and building wealth, start with a goal-based financial plan and move to a cash flow based plan as your risk capacity declines. When you start accumulating, your risk capacity may not be unlimited but it tends to be very high.

So the next time your advisor asks you to just answer a questionnaire, ask them, “Is that it?”

Both Mckenzie and Nolan are learning and talking about communities at school. Mckenzie’s homework one day last month was to write about her favourite part of her community. To help her, I came up with some examples, which got me thinking more about my favourite part of Streetsville.

I am reading Oprah’s book “ What I Know for Sure”; a compilation of her columns, about life’s lessons and one sticks out and paints the perfect picture of what the Village of Streetsville is all about, making our "neighbourhood a real home not just a place to live. I’ve always known that life is better when you share it. But I now realize it gets even sweeter when you expand the circle.”

For me, there are so many things about Streetsville that I love, so it was hard to come up with just one. There is the rich history and my strong connection to this special place that has stories at every corner some dating back to before confederation. There are the wonderful businesses that keep our Village thriving and the dedicated Business Improvement Association (BIA) that keep our town welcoming with flower boxes full of beautiful flowers or Christmas trees to give our village that extra special and enticing feeling of home.

Expand your circle and make Streetsville your home not just somewhere you live. If you have been here for any length of time I am sure you already know this and are right at home because of the wonderful people. What is your favorite part of your community?

But I think for me my favourite part of my community is the people and our connections to the town! There are not many communities that you can live in where you run into a familiar friendly faces wherever you go. A most recent example was when my family and I were out for a bike ride the other day. We rode through town, enjoying the sunshine and visited Memorial Park, where we ran into long-time friends who were out riding on the Culham Trail. We chatted and caught up with them and then headed for an ice cream where the kids ran into some of their friends. Our last planned stop was papa’s park where we ran into some other friends who live nearby, they invited us over for a quick visit, while we chatted, the kids played and then we headed for home to try and beat the rain. What a great day spent with my family at home in our community where we ran into friends at every stop. It is the people and the connections you have to where you live that make a place a home not just a where you live.

Realtors and Professionalism: Do the Two Terms Mix?

Just because all realtors are licensed doesn’t mean that all realtors are the same.

If you are like me, you don’t really want someone to tell you how to run your life. I have ideas that I want to pursue, a lifestyle I want to live, and I don’t care much for the TV Doctors who preach good living when it is not reality.

There is a high turnover in this industry: I’ve seen people quit or lose their jobs, and, in the misguided belief that real estate is easy, jump into the prerequisite training and licensing programs. They become very surprised when they find out that this is actually a serious business where success requires a huge amount of dedication and hard work. When the money doesn’t come rolling in, they leave for greener pastures. Most of us working in this field today are independent contractors.

You read in my previous articles I have suggested looking for someone or some company to offer support for what you are doing and to consider advice and planning as an important part of life. I am not trying to preach but simply trying to impart wisdom that I have learned, sometimes the hard way, for you to get the most out of life.

Why planning? Why not? In life we do not sit back and idle while it passes us by. Whether it is raising a family, growing a career or a business, or looking towards retirement we should have a plan of what we want, and how we want to get there. Planning is an essential part of life. Getting to school, to work, to the gym, any everyday activity requires planning. It is inherent in all of us, we take it for granted, but with a few simple tasks we can make a life plan that works for us and does not cramp our style.

We can be good or bad, new or experienced, honest or dishonest…but the bottom line is that we are each responsible for our own profit and loss.

We hear today of the impending debt crisis in Canada. How will it affect you? If debt is a worry, do not ignore it, but make a plan to deal with your debt. It may mean making a hard choice, changing some of our habits that may lead to pitfalls, but solutions are there. And do not forget patience. A thousand mile journey begins with one step. Dealing with a debt crisis is no different. Plan, small steps, commitment and monitoring will get you there.

It is said that the only things certain in life are death and taxes. While we handle the tax side, for some of us, the death side should involve some planning. We ask our clients “do you want to have your money run out when you do, or do you want to leave a legacy for your family?” Planning for retirement begins when you start working… a little bit at a time.

The realtors who stick it out are typically the ones who work hard, give great service, get terrific results, and know that their success depends on giving their clients great value, often over and above the proverbial call of duty.

Certainly it’s true that some of our sales transactions come together effortlessly—and many more involve thousands of dollars spent on marketing a property, or countless hours spent driving people around for weeks or months looking at potential new homes. Those of us who are dedicated to our chosen profession lost track long ago of the number of times we’ve been up until the wee hours trying to make a deal come together, and we generally don’t take a lot of weekends off.

Planning for your estate begins when you have someone more to care for after your life ends. At an early stage in adulthood, when spouses and children are prevalent and require support should you not survive, there should be a plan for insurance and “what if?” It does not have to be too complicated but should be addressed. You owe it to your loved ones. Estate planning is something we need to consider also. One should never rule from the grave, nor should best intentions be way laid by poor planning. We have seen too many families broken at a time when they should be coming together in a time of sorrow because of poor planning. You need an Executor to manage your will, and this can be difficult. One service we recently began with our firm is Estate management services. We will work with you to make sure your will is up to date, and in proper order and then work with your executor to assist them through troubling times and ensure that your estate is handled as per your wishes and onside with the laws and tax authorities.

Don’t let a family member or close friend become alienated because of poor estate planning. The cost of an ounce of prevention is far less than FinancialGroup the cost of a pound of cure.

As a consumer you need to do your homework and hire the right realtor.

Your best friend might want you to hire an uncle who just started selling real estate, but is he the right realtor for you?

You need to find out how many deals a realtor has completed in the last year, and how many of them were related to the kind of house you want to buy or sell. Talk to some of their clients to find out what their experience with this person was like. And what kind of a negotiator are they?
