The countdown until Christmas begins! The village of Streetsville and Port Credit are brightly lit and the streetscapes are festively decorated for the season. Christmas in the village is a fun and magical time of year, and the spirit of the season truly brings the community together. Community members look forward to the annual celebrations happening and come out each year to experience Christmas in the village. The villages will be buzzing with celebrations and events, including the 40th Annual Mississauga Santa Claus Parade at the end of the month!

Port Credit’s Christmas Events

Christmas events are happening all month long in Port Credit. The fun kicks off with Christmas at Port Street Market on Saturday, November 29th from 10:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The sights and sounds of Christmas will be everywhere you look!

This holiday event is in support of ‘Twas the Bite before Christmas charity. Come out to have your picture taken with jolly old St. Nick. Visit the Festive Market to discover the various artisans, jewelry, ceramics, decorations, hostess gifts and more. There will also be wreath demonstrations to show you some do-it-yourself holiday projects.

Meanwhile, children can explore their creativity with mural paintings and other fun holiday crafts. There will be festively fun games and activities for your children to engage in. Live musical entertainment features performances by Heather Brissenden and Matt Zaddy. Don’t forget to bring a non-perishable food item for The Compass!

Over the years, my meetings and encounters with Hazel have been brief and business in nature - usually a grand opening photo or an article on a local community event. It was not until RJ Entertainment Publishing put together the 40th Anniversary Bread and Honey Program that I had the opportunity to spend some time with Hazel on a different level.

We spent a morning pouring over Sam McCallion’s Bread and Honey photos and memorabilia. The amount of history contained in the boxes was incredible. Hazel was relaxed and really enjoying the trip down memory lane. Her attention to detail and memory of recalling events was uncanny. We managed to pull the best of the best and I put together the program.

Her input and guidance made it one of my favourite commemorative programs we have published.

I will never forget that day with an incredible Mayor and dedicated community person. When I was leaving Hazel vowed to organize all Sam’s boxes and put them on display. With such a busy schedule, I can guarantee the boxes are as we left them.

their Christmas wishes with him. Complimentary hot chocolate, apple cider and other yummy treats will be served. Listen to the talented carolers and join in the singing of your favourite Christmas jingles. Bring your non-perishable items and drop them off at Second Cup for Santa’s Food Drive.

The Lighting up the Lighthouse event takes place on Wednesday, December 3rd from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. and is sponsored by Peel Chrysler Fiat. The lighthouse will be lit up for the holidays with thousands of beautiful lights and fun for the whole family. Join in the celebration and enjoy an evening of festive music, kid’s crafts and free refreshments. Santa Claus will be in attendance to meet and greet the families and spread Christmas cheer! Please bring a food donation for The Compass or a new pair of mittens for the Mitten Tree.

Many of the businesses in Streetsville are competing for the chance to win the 2014 Christmas Window Decorating Contest. The most beautifully decorated storefronts in the village will be awarded for their hard work and display of holiday spirit. All windows will be completed by November 24th and judges will pick the top 3 windows. The winners will be announced at the Tree Lighting Event and the prizes will be awarded. The windows will be on display throughout the holiday season.

The annual Footprints of Christmas will take place Thursday, December 4th, Friday, December 5th and Saturday, December 6th at St. Andrew Memorial Presbyterian Church. The tours begin at 6:30 p.m. each night for the duration of 20 minutes. Come out to witness live outdoor drama and experience the enactment of some of the most popular biblical stories. Stories include a Christmas Angel, Mary and Jesus in a manger and the Shepard’s Holy visit.

Footprints of Christmas features live animals, carols and stories. Visit St. Andrew Memorial Presbyterian Church located at 24 Stavebank Road North.

Get ready for the Mississauga Santa Claus Parade on Sunday, November 30th beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Mississauga Santa Claus Parade draws around 50,000 people each year. Festive floats and parade participants will make their way down Queen Street South to Old Station Road in Streetsville. At the parade you can experience various talented marching bands filling the air with harmonious Christmas tunes. The entertainers and popular characters will be parading down Queen Street, handing out giveaways.

‘Twas the Bite before Christmas Breakfast is happening on December 7th from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at La Villa Fine Foods and Bakery. Come to experience a delicious and hearty all-day bakery breakfast at the low price of $10. In addition to enjoying a great meal, you will also be supporting an excellent cause!

To the delight of all the little ones gathered in anticipation, Jolly Old Saint Nick will zoom in on his sleigh at the tail end of the parade. Santa Claus will spread holiday cheer, as he waves to the crowd, wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas. The 40th annual Mississauga Santa Claus Parade is an event you and your family will not want to miss!

Free Pictures with Santa will take place on December 11th from 5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at 103 Lakeshore Road East. Realtor Theresa Baird from Keller Williams Realty Solutions is sponsoring this holiday event.

Let’s not forget Port Credit’s annual Caroling in the Park happening on December 15th from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Port Credit Memorial Park. This year marks the 40th year of Port Credit’s Caroling in the Park Christmas event. The community will gather to sing Christmas carols, enjoy free warm cranberry punch and shortbread cookies. Bring a mug and a flashlight!

Please note Britannia Road and Queen Street will be closed and parking is limited, so plan on car pooling, walking or taking the Mississauga Transit to the parade. Be sure to arrive early and claim a good spot, before it gets too crowded!

Mississauga Santa Claus Parade supports Toy For Tots campaign

For each of these Port Credit events, don’t forget to bring your non-perishable food donation for the Compass Food Bank or a new pair of mittens for the Mitten Tree. Impressionable Gifts will be accepting new pairs of mittens from December 1st – 20th to donate to families in need in the community.

The Mississauga Santa Claus Parade is excited to announce that once again they will be collecting new, unused toys for the Peel Regional Police Toys for Tots Campaign. Toys can be dropped off on parade day to the Streetsville Town Square before or after the parade.

Streetsville’s Christmas Events

The Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place on Friday, November 29th from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This ceremony will be particularly breathtaking this year because of its location in the new and beautifully redesigned Streetsville Village Square. The square is beautifully lit, and decorated, with trees lining the streets.

You won’t want to miss out on the celebration, as we countdown to reveal a new Christmas tree which will illuminate the square and village streets.

The Toys For Tots campaign runs until December 24th and new, unwrapped toys can also be dropped off at any Peel Regional Police Division, Brampton and Mississauga Fire Departments, The Streetsville BIA office, Streetsville Arena, Enersource at the Derry Road location and Meadowvale Canadian Tire.

The Taste of Streetsville Makes Largest Donation Yet! By: Lindsay Howe

The 6th annual Taste of Streetsville was a resounding success! Streetsville residents and people from across the GTA came out to sample some of the best culinary delights the village has to offer, while also supporting a worthy cause. It is our pleasure to announce that more money was raised this year than ever before!

An outstanding $2375 was raised for the Trillium Health Partners Hospital Foundation. This year’s donation will go towards the redevelopment of the Credit Valley Hospital’s emergency department. The redevelopment plan is geared at redesigning the department to better maximize patient flow and create separate, specialized treatment areas for paediatrics and seniors, as well as other enhancements. This is the fourth year Taste of Streetsville has donated to the Credit Valley Hospital.

Taste of Streetsville gives all of us a reason to go out, enjoy great food and a lively atmosphere, all for a great price. Moreover, Taste of Streetsville gives community members the incentive to try out different eateries in the village and experience the eclectic styles and flavours offered. This culinary festival is an opportunity to celebrate diverse cuisine at some of the finest restaurants in Mississauga.

Thirteen of the village’s most celebrated restaurants offered price fixe menus, which includes an appetizer, entrée, and dessert. Meanwhile, some smaller eateries in the village offered “Just a Taste of Streetsville”, which gave the option of lighter meal choices at a lower price point.

Streetsville’s Halloween Events Recap

Hundreds of families came out for the festivities and enjoyed some Halloween fun. It was a ghoulishly good time!

Spooktacular took place on Saturday, October 25th at Vic Johnston Community Centre. Nearly 300 children came dressed up in their costumes and joined in on the festivities. The children participated in a range of fun and interactive activities from crafts, to face painting, to balloon animals, to music and story time. The children had the opportunity to explore their creativity at the various craft stations set up throughout the room. Crafts ranged from making jewelry, to play-dough sculptures, painting, colouring and other fun surprises.

Spooktacular was a huge success again this year! Not only was there a large turnout, but the elated looks on the children’s faces said it all. A Spooktacular time was had by each of the families who came out to join in on the Halloween fun.

A total of 320 lbs. of food was collected and $175 for Eden Community Food Bank from those who attended. Thanks to our sponsors for helping to make this STREETSVILLE event happen. See you next year for the 9th annual Spooktacular!

The Pumpkin Parade

There was a big turnout for our first annual Pumpkin Parade event, which took place on Saturday, November 1st. The Pumpkin Parade is a new addition to Streetsville’s Halloween celebrations, and took place at our fully redesigned Streetsville Village Square. About 84 pumpkins were on display and everyone was really impressed with the creativity that was shown. Candles were added to each of the Jack-O-Lanterns, making a beautiful light display across the square. The children had a lot of fun admiring all of the different designs on the pumpkins.

Streetsville Arena Public Skating Public Skating takes place Sunday’s from 1:00-2:30 pm until March 22, 2015. Cost is $4 or $10 for a Family/Group. There is also a Parent with Preschoolers and Seniors free skate, every THURSDAY until April 16, 2015! Come on out from 12:30 – 2 pm.

COMMUNITY CORNER | PORT CREDIT Remembrance Day Streetsville and Port Credit’s Remembrance Day event took place on Tuesday, November 11th. Both events started with a parade then a ceremony at the cenotaph. A moment of silence at 11 am was held to pay respects to the many men and women that sacrificed so much so that we could enjoy the lives we lead today.

The Result; 4th Annual Diaper Drive

By Lydia Ordóñez-Niles – Impressionable Gifts The 4th Annual Diaper Drive was another success thanks to so many!

Generously donated were: 69 packages of diapers, 16 packages of baby wipes and $418.30 in cash. The cash portion purchased 35 more packs of diapers. This was perfect as I was able to pick up the sizes that we were short of to donate and distribute evenly.

As a bonus - I also received points on a points cards and used these points to purchase an additional seven packs of diapers and two packages of baby wipes, every little bit helps, right? Leaving the GRAND TOTAL of donations at ..... 111 packs of diapers and 18 packs of baby wipes! The three non-profit organizations that received the donations were: The Interim Place, The Compass and My Life Centre. All three nonprofit locations were very grateful for this donation. Two locations were completely out of diapers and one was out of baby wipes - talk about perfect timing! This year’s winner for the in-store Diaper Drive draw was Stephanie Valent - congrats! She was thrilled with the large canvas print she won.

Lineup for the 2015 Port Credit Comedy Festival Announced!

The 3rd edition of the Port Credit Comedy Festival will celebrate stand-up and variety comedy from all around the world, February 26 – 28, 2015.The festival welcomes Acme Comedy Company’s 2003 Funniest Person award winner, Tim Harmston. Winning that and numerous other awards has led Tim to appearances on CBSs Late Show with David Letterman and Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham.

Port Credit Comedy Festival will also feature: Mark Forward, Dave Hemstad, Jen Grant, Nathan MacIntosh, Mary Mack, Kyle Radke, Steve Dylan, Mike Wood, John Park and Dan The One Man Band!

The Shop the Neighbourhood event takes place on Saturday, November 29th across the villages. The community is encouraged to come out and take advantage of holiday deals, while supporting local businesses.

Christmas Magic at the Port Street Market

In this season of giving, help those in need by building a mountain of food for The Compass – bring a nonperishable food item and fill the bins.

The Brogue also will be offering pleasing Irish fare for lunch and dinner featuring traditional pies – Turkey Pot Pies, Steak and Kidney Pies, Shepherd’s Pie and Fisherman Pies and a short amble away, The Pump House Grill will highlight a festive Turkey lunch and dinner.

Music will fill the hearts of all visitors as Heather Brissenden and Matt Zaddy sing songs as well as sing-a-long carols.

A variety of Interactive Ice Sculptures and Carving Demonstrations also will be at Port Street Market. Children will love the “Kids Cool Canvas Activity” – a great opportunity to paint their own murals on ice allowing their inner creativity to show. The 6th Annual ‘Twas the Bite Before Christmas

The spirit of giving is all around us: Fighting hunger and feeding hope in the community This year marks the 6th anniversary of ‘Twas the Bite before Christmas. In partnership with the Port Credit BIA, ‘Twas the Bite holds annual events to raise money for The Mississauga Food Bank and The Compass Food Bank. Port Credit residents continue to give generously each year, which goes a long way to fight hunger in the community. Since sponsors cover the costs incurred, every last cent that is raised is given directly to the food banks. Last year an outstanding $60,000 was raised towards feeding hungry families in the community!

‘Twas the Bite before Christmas charity was started to raise money and collect food for the Mississauga Food Bank. When the founders came up with the idea to start the charity over 6 years ago, their objective was to create something inclusive that would connect with the community’s natural impulse to give. The events put on each year, is a festive and fun time for the whole family. Vic Johnston Community Centre Mural A Must See

A few years ago the Vic Johnston Community Centre (VJCC) was converted into a movie set for the movie “Breakaway” starring Rob Lowe. Part of the changes in the arena included murals on the east wall.

Since 2010, Adventure Canada, an Arctic tour operator located in Port Credit, in partnership with Project North has been delivering sports equipment to children in remote communities in Canada’s Arctic.

Staff and Board members of the VJCC that had the opportunity to visit the movie set were impressed with how the murals transformed the rink and only had positive things to say about the idea. So, the idea for a permanent mural was born and could not be put to rest. The VJCC Board of Directors voted unanimously to move ahead with the creation and installation of a permanent mural on the east wall. Jeff Duggan, Operations Manager of the VJCC, was in charge of the overall project and Toby Gardiner, VJCC Board member, was lead of the mural design. The original theme of the mural was fashioned after the movie and was going to be focused on the history of hockey in Streetsville from 1961 until the present day but as Toby began to gather photos, the concept shifted to focus more on chronicling the history and the community spirit of the Village of Streetsville.

In September of this year during their Greenland and Labrador expedition, Adventure Canada delivered 25 hockey bags to Jens Haven Memorial Grade School in Nain, the northernmost permanent settlement in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Each bag was complete with new hockey equipment to suit up 22 players and two goalies from head to toe.

Access to the predominantly Inuit community of Nain is limited to air transport and (depending on ice conditions) a weekly provincial ferry service via the Atlantic coastline from June to November. The cost of basic items, including food, that are brought in to Nain can be remarkably high. A single serving package of fresh mixed vegetables can cost $7.99 at the grocery store.

Toby compiled pictures from many different local sources and created the mural concept and then handed it over to Jeff Jones from Migomedia to complete the artwork and the mural design.

Cedar Swan, Vice President of Adventure Canada, says that athletics was an important part of her youth. “The idea of making athletics and hockey in particular, more accessible in a community where the cost of living is high appeals to me. Our company and our clients have wholeheartedly supported Project North over the years; both in terms of individual contributions in the form of time and money and in assisting with the deliverance of hockey equipment throughout Arctic Canada. I am very proud of that” says Cedar.

In preparation for the mural installation the arena wall had to be rebuilt which entailed pushing it out and putting in a vapour barrier to protect against moisture. The mural was unveiled in mid-September and has been the talk of the town since. Soft lighting to highlight the mural is the last portion of the project that will be completed over the next few months.

The mural was created to chronicle the history of Streetsville and illustrate its community spirit. It does this with black and white images that are a reflection of the village. It showcases aspects of community and sports in Streetsville. The mural presents community events in Streetsville, including the Bread and Honey Festival, Canada Day Celebrations and the Mississauga Santa Claus Parade.

In 2015 Adventure Canada will deliver $25,000 worth of new hockey equipment to Resolute, Nunavut. For more information on Adventure Canada please visit www. adventurecanada.com.

The VJCC staff point out that people make special trips into the rink just to view the mural, and everyone that has seen it, has nothing but positive feedback. So, if you have not seen this wonderful piece of art you need to make a point to visit the Vic Johnston Community Centre and check it out. The response has been so positive that there are plans expand the mural.

The VJCC Board of Directors is very proud of the finished product and they hope everyone in the community will get a chance to enjoy this visual history of Streetsville for years to come.

In the beginning....

A Special Tribute to Mayor Hazel McCallion

Nestled on the southern end of the rocky coast of the Gaspé Peninsula lies a cozy, picturesque town called Port Daniel. Surrounded by high green hills and a magnificent white sand beach, this village became one of the most important commercial fishing villages of the early 19th century. But it was also famous for two other reasons. On July 4, 1534 Jacques Cartier dropped anchor in this sheltered bay to seek refuge from a dangerous squall. Almost 400 years later on February 14, 1921 Hazel Mary Muriel Journeaux was born. And this is where it all began.

Notre Dame Secretarial School was the next stop and with a secretarial degree under her arm and a new found taste of the big city, Hazel was ready for the world of commerce and professional hockey. There was a women’s professional league in Montreal. Three teams in the league. “I was invited to tryout and made the roster” Hazel states. “I played for the KIK team. The KIK soft drink company was our sponsor and I was paid $5 a game”.

After employment with two companies in Montreal, Hazel found a job that would last nineteen years and the Canadian Kellogg Company would eventually send her to Toronto in a management position. So all the rumours that she took a forward pass during a hockey game and skated down the St. Lawrence River until she saw the Royal York Hotel are absolutely false. But the story sounds good anyway!

Hazel describes life back then as simple. “I was a depression kid. I had only one doll and one plush bunny rabbit as toys. That’s all I ever had, but we were never hungry because we lived on a farm. We raised maybe two hundred chickens, five pigs, three cows and a couple of young cattle, two horses and that ran the farm and that’s what we lived off of basically”.

Hazel was a secretary to the General Manager of the company in Toronto. “He was a boss that taught me a lot,” she suggests. “When you come into my office to present something, make sure you have done your homework” he would demand. “And to this day, that stuck with me throughout my career” Hazel adds. A new boss, Hank Wuderman made her the office manager. “And she did a helluva job” he adds. “I sent her down to New York with these papers for the gentleman I reported to in the U.S. company and he called me right after she left to come back and said to me ”Where the hell did you find her? She thinks like a man.”

Hazel was the youngest of five children. Dad Herbert, founded and ran one of the first private fish processing businesses in Canada; Mom Amanda Maud, ran the family, ran a tourist home and played the organ in the local church. “She was a very accomplished person” claims Hazel. “She was an excellent pianist and had a beautiful singing voice. She was the first nurse to graduate from the Montreal General Hospital in 1901, so she was one of the first nurses on the Gaspé coast.”

Life around the Journeaux household was typical of the many families of the day - hard work, a little time for fun and an active church upbringing. “Mother brought us up to understand that work never killed anybody” Hazel says, “and we all worked. From the age of eleven, I was looking after the little store Dad had where we sold groceries to the fishermen. I used to serve them and post their purchases to the register and record how many pounds of fish they brought in”.

So now we start to see where Hazel established her business acumen! A little later we’ll talk politics. First, let’s talk hockey! Hazel’s brother Lochard was the one responsible for getting that started.

Between work and her interest in the Anglican Church, particularly the Christian Youth Association, Hazel didn’t have much time for anything else - but that was all about to change.

Sam McCallion, a tall, dashing young man who also belonged to the Anglican youth group would sweep Hazel off her feet. Canadian Kellogg was facing a downturn in business, greater competition, and feeling unproductive, Hazel opted to retire and move to the country and help Sam with his business.

The young couple moved to their first home, settling on a five-acre piece of property on Britannia Rd. in the quaint and quiet Village of Streetsville. Soon three children would come along.

“He went to work in Montreal and brought me back my first pair of skates when I was five” she claims. “He took me out to a sheet of ice in the field and showed me how to skate. On my first try I fell down and hit my head on the ice and began to cry.” Lochard persevered. “You’re going to become a hockey player young lady” he demanded. And she did!

Sam operated a thriving printing business and started a community newspaper, The Streetsville Booster. Hazel, recognizing some need for change in her town, resurrected her interest in politics - and the rest, as they say, is history. Streetsville and Mississauga would never look back.

Port Daniel had its own ladies hockey team and the Journeaux girls were the stars of the town. Hazel was the speedy high-scoring centre while sisters Gwen and Linda played defense.

I discovered very early in Hazel’s political career that we were both Gaspecians, I being born in the village of Wakeham, just up the road from Port Daniel albeit a few years later. This connection started a wonderful friendship we have enjoyed all these years. I have watched in awe as my Mayor has transformed my city into Canada’s sixth largest in the land, all while becoming a household name here in Canada as well as in many other parts of the world. Utilizing the same simple life principles she learned as a child in Port Daniel, Hazel has parlayed those skills into a lifetime of leadership and accomplishment. Enjoy the next chapter in your life Hazel, it is very well deserved.

Brother Lochard would eventually become the Mayor of Port Daniel and that, no doubt, rubbed off on his baby sister Hazel. “Lochard and Hazel had the brains in the family” claims older sister Linda, “and it wasn’t a surprise to any of us when she later went into politics.”

The small village of Port Daniel couldn’t accommodate education beyond grade school, so young Hazel packed her bags for higher learning. After graduating Grade 10 in St. Johns, Quebec, just outside Montreal, it was on to Commissioners High School in Quebec City for the young lady from Port Daniel.

The year was 1938. The school yearbook states Hazel as being ‘quiet, industrious and adjustable. Although we don’t hear much from her’ it goes on to say, ‘she is certainly an asset to our class.’ Quiet...adjustable...don’t hear much...are they talking about the same Hazel that we know?

Ron Duquette has been an ardent biographer of Hazel McCallion’s life and career and chronicled his research into a filmed documentary in 2001. Much has happened since that time.

The Early Years in Streetsville

A Special Tribute to Mayor Hazel McCallion

By Todd Ladner and Ralph Hunter Ralph Hunter worked as diligently supporting the community of Streetsville as he did on the success of his own local insurance company.

He chose a lifestyle that focused on living, working and raising a family in the village, much like Hazel McCallion who along with husband Sam raised three children and various horses and others animals on their property in the village. Naturally, Hazel and Ralph became friends and shared many common interests.

During years past, the Credit River was typically frozen solid in the winter months.

It served as a playground for hardy souls living in the area. Snowmobiles became so numerous on the river that it became as dangerous and unregulated as a playing field of ice, much to the concern of caring residents. Mayor Hazel took everyone’s comments into consideration and formulated a brilliant pro-active solution to the dilemma. She appointed Ralph voluntary chair of Streetsville’s Parks and Recreation Committee and then recommended the Chair form a Credit River Snowmobile Club with a working non-partisan executive and a mandate to moderate machine usage. The strategy proved a success and all parties safely enjoyed their winter wonderland!

in 1959 and chairs the local BIA. On many occasions an unannounced visitor can be found sitting in the back room of the store with Mr. Ladner still seeking resolution to various local issues, usually in the same spirited manner. It’s a generational Streetsville tradition!

During the amalgamation wars of the early 1970’s, Hazel’s husband Sam took a firm pro-Streetsville stand in his local publication ‘The Booster’. Public dissention escalated enough to demand the scheduling of a Town Hall meeting at the Vic Johnston Community Centre to discuss the proposal with then Premier Bill Davis.

Citizens were canvassed and businesses were solicited to attend. The Hall was raucous. Premier Davis describes the era better than anyone, but that particular day, Ralph found himself leaving the meeting just when Mr. Davis was climbing into his limousine. Mr. Hunter distinctly overheard the Premier say to his driver “toughest meeting I have ever attended!!” Streetsville ultimately lost the war, but was well-represented in battle that day by Mayor Hazel. Sam would later found the Streetsville Bread & Honey Festival, one of Canada’s longest-running community festivals.

Todd also serves as a second generation volunteer on the Board of Management of the Streetsville Arena, along with other second generation Directors Jim Gray, Myles Robinson, Ken Hunter, Todd Smith and others. They have been handed the task of maintaining the operations of the Community Centre that was founded

by Vic Johnston in 1961. It is one of the few City owned and volunteer managed facilities in Canada. For decades the good work of past and present Board members has been personally scrutinized and supported by one Mayor. The blueprint for self-sufficiency and success was put in place more than 50 years ago and Hazel has held everyone to plan! Hazel, of course, turned to politics back in those days. She was named a member of the Streetsville Planning Board in 1964, served as Chair of that board in 1966 and again in 1968 and later that same year became Deputy Reeve of Streetsville. She was appointed Reeve, and then elected as Mayor of the Village, both in 1970, and served in that capacity until amalgamation of the City of Mississauga in 1974, when she joined the new municipal government as a Councillor. The rest, as they say....is history!

As a youngster growing up in Streetsville, Todd Ladner was quite familiar with the principle players in the business community including of course, Ralph Hunter and Mayor Hazel. A Special Tribute to Mayor Hazel McCallion

By Justus Musicorp The singing group Justus was formed in Streetsville in 1975. Hazel was Mayor of our fair village around that time, and subsequently became the Mayor of Mississauga.

The group sang for a lot of community events including the Mississauga Santa Claus Parade, Bread and Honey Festival, nursing homes, senior’s homes and hospitals.

In the early 80’s Justus started entertaining the local senior’s groups with a Valentine’s Tea at Eden United Church. You may know that Hazel’s birthday is on February 14th, so we always reserved a place for her so that we could celebrate her birthday with her. She was very often late, not because she was tardy, but because she was so busy. She often mentioned to her gathered fans at the tea that she had already been to two or three other events between Church at Trinity and our Tea. She has always been a very busy and caring woman and still is!!

When Justus performed their major shows at Meadowvale Theatre, she always came to watch. When we decided to have a major Christmas show, she insisted that we perform in “her theatre”, the Hammerson Hall at the Living Arts Centre. She has attended all of our Christmas shows, even after Justus moved back to Meadowvale Theatre.

The pinnacle of our association with Hazel was when we were able to accompany her and a delegation from Mississauga to our Sister City, Kariya Japan, for the 2005 World Exposition. Hazel quite often refers to us as her choir, and she has often joined us on stage at Christmas, Canada Day and Bread and Honey. We love to call her our biggest fan.

Thanks Hazel for a great ride, as both Justus and you move into our respective retirements.

Family Fables – The joy of giving and not just receiving!

As the Holiday season draws near, the commercials have started for all the latest toys and gadgets for kids. It is easy to get caught up in all of this. I often have to remind myself to try and refocus the kids.

I don’t want to take away their excitement or joy of the season but I want them to remember the important things about Christmas for our family. At our house we celebrate Christmas and Jesus’ birthday. Todd and I frequently engage in conversations with the kids about the most important aspects of Christmas, and to my delight and surprise the answers of love, spending time with your family and celebrating God and Jesus are on the list; which make me feel that even though most days I think I am not doing anything right as a parent I may be on the right path, at least some of the time.

I was recently reading a Today’s Parent article “How to raise an appreciative child”

by Tracy Chapell and it highlighted the fact that “as the parent we get to define what celebrating means at your house, and shifting the focus from getting to giving will have a ripple effect.” We have done this at our house for the last few years by limiting the number of gifts that kids put on their Christmas list’s, they need to widdle them down to their top 3 picks, with the hope that they will get at least one item from their list. We talk about how Santa needs to have enough toys for kids around the world and we need to make sure that everyone has a great Christmas.

We don’t want the focus to be about receiving, we also want to expose them to the joy of giving. As a family for the last four years we have been filling shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child with gifts, toys, school supplies and hygiene items along with a note of love and hope for children in developing countries.

The kids thoroughly enjoy shopping for and filling the boxes and getting them ready to send to children in other parts of the world. After we send them they often ask about them and wonder if the children liked their gifts.

We are truly blessed and I want my children to know and appreciate all the blessings in our life. I never want them to focus solely on “things” and forget what really matters, love, laughter family and friends! Wishing you and your family all the best this holiday season. Merry Christmas!

How to beat holiday pounds

What do holiday parties and family get togethers’ all have in common?

Food and drinks galore…high-calorie food and drinks, that is! No wonder most people gain weight during the holidays.

Wise Choices The holidays offer many food choices not available the rest of the year. Because of this, you may want to overindulge before they’re gone.

Instead of doing this, survey what foods are available and make your choices. Indulge in your favorites and leave the everyday dishes for another time. Only eat what you love, and don’t just eat something because it’s on the buffet table. Also, be sure to limit the amount of alcoholic beverages you drink. Try alternating an alcoholic drink with a non-alcoholic drink.

Everywhere you turn, you’re surrounded by sweet temptations – holiday cookies, chocolate, heavy gravies…and more. Even healthy foods like sweet potatoes and green beans are magically transformed into high-calorie dishes that will leave you suffering from “itis.” And don’t forget the drinks. From high-calorie eggnog, hot chocolate to alcoholic beverages…all of which are loaded with empty calories!

Stay Focused The holidays bring yummy foods and drinks, but family and friend gatherings are not about food. Before a party, remind yourself what the holiday season is all about – friends, family, giving, and religious traditions. Not a reason to go “nuts” at the buffet table. Second, stay focused on your health goals. Remind yourself of all the hard work you put into your workouts and how much you’ve achieved…so far. A few bites of food aren’t worth 100 burpees.

New Family Tax Cut

Income splitting used to have bad connotations in the tax world. Over the years however, more and more legitimate opportunities have become available to couples and families to benefit from lowering one person’s tax bracket by shifting income to a lower income earner. Surprisingly, not a lot has been written so far about major changes to family tax planning opportunities created by the proposed new family tax cut.

Announced by the Prime Minister while visiting a community centre in Vaughn and making crafts with children last October, this new package is probably the most significant since Economic Action Plan of 2009. Initiated within the last budget and later scaled down, the family income splitting policy is now out and only pending parliamentary approval, which, given majority government and program’s appeal to taxpayers, is very likely to happen.

If you have a family with children under 18, please read on to see what will change when filing your 2014 taxes this coming spring.

1. Income splitting A spouse with a higher income will be able to transfer up to $50,000 of taxable income to a lower income spouse or common-law partner. This will result in up to $2,000 of tax reduction. (Initially, the income splitting was not capped, but it was criticized for benefiting the highest income earners the most). Your calculation of child tax benefit, GST credit, and Ontario Trillium Benefit will not be affected by this income transfer.

2. Enhanced universal child care benefit If you have children under 6, you are already receiving $100 monthly. This will increase to $160. Parents with older children, up to 17 years of age, will now also receive $60 monthly per child. This benefit will remain taxable, so you will have to include it on your next year’s tax return.

3. Increased deduction for child care expenses The maximum claim for child care expenses that you can deduct from your income goes up by $1,000. You will be able to claim up to $8,000 per child under 7, $5,000 per child under 16, and $11,000 per child with disability.

4. Higher children’s fitness tax credit You will be able to claim up to $1,000 of children’s sport’s activities to receive a tax credit. In addition, this credit becomes refundable, so even if you do not pay tax, you will still benefit by getting a refund at 15% of fees paid. This is available for programs for children under 16.

The government quotes the reason behind this program as bringing income splitting opportunities not only to seniors (through pension splitting) and single parents (through claiming a child as eligible dependant), but also to families. Timely for the next year’s election, too. But definitely, remember to take every possible advantage of the family tax cut when you file 2014 taxes!

‘Tis the Season, I’m Fogging Up

By Silvia Yeomans, Queen Spectacle It’s chilly outside, and the first thing that happens when you walk indoors is the instant fogging. It’s not only frustrating, but you really are in a selfinflicted “white-out” condition. It seems more obvious at this time of year, but it’s more bothersome than you think.

This is definitely something you can make with your children. The ornaments are all unique and can be eaten or hung on your Christmas tree.

TIP: Crush a variety of candy cane flavours to get different coloured centres, just be sure to keep flavours separate.

1 cup sugar ¾ cup butter, softened 1 egg 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour ½ tsp baking powder Pinch of salt 1 box (128g) coarsely crushed candy cane, any flavour

Regardless of what you’re doing, fogging happens everywhere; opening the dishwasher, drinking a hot drink, cooking and opening the oven, wearing work masks and goggles and sometimes just playing winter sports.

This is a problem that happens around the world, regardless of climate, it occurs when moving from a cold to a warm environment.

Beat sugar with butter, on medium speed, until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. In a smaller bowl, stir flour, baking powder and salt. Mix the flour mixture into the butter mixture, just until combined. Knead dough lightly until smooth. Divide dough into two equal portions and form into disks. Wrap disks in plastic wrap; chill for 30 minutes.

In warmer humid regions, it occurs when you leave the air-conditioned indoors and go outside. There is a solution: OptiFog by Essilor. OptiFog is applied to the top layer of your spectacle lenses and comes with an activating cloth that contains special molecules that activate the anti-fog properties of the lens.

Preheat oven to 375*F. Roll the dough out, on a lightly floured surface, ¼-inch thick. Use holiday cookie cutters to cut out cookies. Arrange cookies, at least 1-inch apart on parchment lined baking sheets. Use smaller cutters or a paring knife to cut out shapes from the centres of the cookies (leave at least ¼ inch boarders around interior shapes).

It’s a solution for surgeons, mechanics and chefs. It’s a solution for just about anyone who’s dreading the cold winter that might be ahead of us.

Fill the cut-outs with candy cane pieces. Do not overfill; small gaps will fill in when the candy cane melts. If desired, poke a small hole at the top of each cookie, so cookies can be strung and hung as decorations. Re-roll scraps to make more cookies.

Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden around the edges and candy centres are evenly melted. Cool cookies completely on the baking sheet before lifting to allow centres to set. Cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Makes 36 cookies

En-kata Maasai Choir Performs for Kendellhurst Academy Students

By Regan Clipperton We are all here today to celebrate and dedicate this park to someone special, my Popa; Jon Clipperton.

The En-kata Maasai Choir from Simanjiro, Tanzania performed at Kendellhurst Academy Grade School on Monday, November 3rd. The students were delighted to meet the choir and welcomed them by saying hello in Maasai. This warm greeting helped the choir members feel at home at Kendellhurst. En-kata Maasai choir performed their traditional songs and dances for the students and teachers in the gymnasium. The students particularly enjoyed hearing the choir sing, and listening to some of their stories. Through this presentation the students learned about the Maasai culture, traditions, and way of life.

I may be the only person speaking right now but I am speaking for his seven grandchildren as well as almost anyone else who met or knew my Popa. He was a devoted volunteer and a Streetsville Lion. From coaching a local hockey team, to helping at the Vic Johnston down the road or just volunteering his time and efforts. He managed to do it all while being President of W.N. Atkinson Insurance, the building not far from here.

I remember so many years ago, running happily to play at the park we are standing at today. Being only seven years old when my Popa passed, I grieve not having him with me so long. But every picture I have of him and me, or anyone else, he is always smiling or laughing or he just looks so proud. Every conversation about him, I learn more and more. I hear more stories all ending in laughter or warm smiles. I just feel blessed that he was part of my life and I’m sure everyone he was close to feels the same.

The children were excited to tell their parents about the experience, encouraging them to help out the Maasai community by purchasing the photobook. The students studied the vivid photographs in the book, and enjoyed reading stories about the customs and lifestyle of the Maasai people. The Kendellhurst Academy community set a goal of raising enough money to be able to send a Maasai community member through teachers college. Many parents purchased the photobook as a keepsake, while others made generous donations, giving everything from iPads to cameras, camcorder and laptops. Kendellhurst also donated iPads as learning tools for the En-kata school.

So I think this park being dedicated to my Popa Jon Clipperton is amazing, fitting for an even more amazing man.

How En-kata started Nadine Feser is a teacher at Kendellhurst Academy Grade School. She grew up in Tanzania and spent time working in the Maasai community. While working there, Nadine befriended a women living in Maasailand who wanted Nadine to take her son so that he could leave Simanjiro and get an education. Deeply affected by this experience, Nadine made an oath to affect change in the community by bringing education to Maasailand.

With the support of her family, Nadine started an initiative to raise money to build a school in one of the most remote areas of Simanjiro. The Feser family decided on creating a photobook, packed with the colour and life of the Maasai community. The photobook entitled “En-kata, A Time for Singing” illustrates the beauty of Africa, the faith of the people and the future of Africa.

About the En-kata Maasai Choir The En-kata Maasai choir has been busy travelling across North America, sharing their music with countless schools and churches. The music is written by the members themselves and the lyrics speak of hope and transformation. In 2009, the En-kata Maasai choir went on their first tour and the profits from that tour alone was enough to build a school with a classroom and washroom. Since then they have done three more tours, travelling across North America, sharing their music and educating people about where they came from.

Funding a School in the Maasai Community For every photobook purchased 60% of that money goes directly towards school funding. Before this initiative began in 2007, education was almost completely missing in Maasailand. Today each family in the community is able to send one of their children to school. Currently, there is a Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2 classroom already in process. Through the photobook and the work done by the Feser family, the Masaai community has been given education, hope, and a future. Furthermore, the change has come from within the community; the school is on Maasai land, owned by a Maasai organization, being built, and run

by Maasai.

Nadine was delighted to have the Maasai choir perform their songs for the Kendellhurst students. She states, “I loved merging these two separate worlds, both so alike, and yet completely unfamiliar to each other. I am honoured to be involved with both groups of kind and generous people!

Kendellhurst Academy would like to give a special thanks to all the families for their generous support to help provide a brighter future for the Maasai children.

Christmas Cheer

By Ric Cooper, Ric’s Recollections With the Christmas holiday season fast approaching, I think it’s a good time to re-visit some advice that I offered a few years back.

The interest and demand for vinyl and turntables is not slowing down and in fact, the increase in record sales is actually surprising some industry insiders.

While in many cases it is just a fad (more on that later), most of the customers are just fed up with the current music scene and are looking for the “magic” that quality music can and does provide. The cliché “you get what you pay for” certainly holds true in the record and turntable market and with a little direction, you can see what the fuss is all about.

Turntables are available for as little as $100 to some going for $26,000! The spread in prices is huge and somewhat daunting but count on spending $300 to $500 for a quality starting turntable. There are no “bells & whistles” on most quality ‘tables, just basic functions such as power, cuing and in some, speed adjustment. You might be wondering why such a price spread? The simple answer is quality of materials, workmanship and ability to play records.

If you are buying a turntable as a fad, only spending in the $100 range will get you something that will play some records but the sound will be poor and the listener’s interest will be short. In fact, I’ve had some customers complain that these cheap ‘tables skip on brand new LPs, as the grooves are cut wider and deeper than in vinyl’s heyday of the 60s, 70s and 80s. The needles are just spit out of the groove with information they just aren’t good enough to handle.

The more money you spend on a cartridge/stylus, the more refined it is and it traces the groove deeper giving more accurate sound. Often these cheap record players are made of plastic and some even come in an “all-in-one” system with built in CD player, radio and amp stacked into one unit. STAY AWAY from these, as far as you can!

Record labels are realizing that CD sales are dying off with digital downloads eclipsing their sales in large numbers. While downloads may be the way to go if you just like singles and pop fodder, but if your attention span is greater than a flea’s then the album format may be for you. There’s nothing greater than sitting down and listening to the “musical statement” an artist/band has created for an album. Vinyl records are being produced at a dizzying pace and many of the re-issues are simply stunning! Most are 180 to 200 gram utilizing quality raw materials to give a substantial product. While some are digitally re-mastered (generally a bad choice), many are from the original analogue source which is as close to being in the studio with artist!

New music by Pink Floyd, Leonard Cohen, Coldplay, U2 and many more are available on vinyl along with the re-issues of bands like Dire Straits, Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison so there is loads of music to suit many tastes. Many obscure albums that were almost impossible to find and prohibitively expensive as originals are seeing the light of day that will satisfy even the most demanding collectors. While I can’t stock all of the LPs, I do have a large selection, ones that I’ve heard or had rave reviews about. If you are still a bit confused about getting into vinyl and turntables, please come into the store, I’d be happy to chat for a few minutes and help give you direction about which way to go.

At this time of year I’d like to ask that if you can, help a neighbor, donate your time or money or food to help the less fortunate, and just plain BE NICE, a smile goes a long way and even if you brighten one person’s Christmas, then good on you !

Timothy’s Pub gears up for the holidays

By Martha Sheppard This is really a simple picture. Naturally beautiful objects enhanced by humans. This really represents only a small sample of the simply beautiful things you will find at Ladybug Harbor. Some of my favourites, I will admit.

The holiday season is upon us and Timothy’s Pub is getting ready for their annual Christmas Wish Fundraiser.

The date is set for Friday, December 12th and the evening will feature a gigantic silent auction, raffles, draws and entertainment by D.J. Rocky. All money raised will go towards helping families in need during the Christmas season. Last year $15,500 was raised and the proceeds were donated to The Salvation Army.

On January 10th, The Meteors will mark the eleventh anniversary of their weekly jam. For over eleven years, Timothy’s has been the place to be in the GTA on Saturday afternoons. The anniversary party will begin at 5 p.m. and continue until 1 a.m. An incredible array of guests from the past eleven years will be performing....but new guests and musicians are still welcome! Do not miss this great kickoff to 2015!

Catch all the NFL playoffs at Timothy’s. Prizes and specials are offered each weekend. Timothy’s famous Super Bowl party will take place on Sunday, February 1st. There will be a free half-time buffet, D.J. Rocky as host and lots and lots of incredible prizes.

Recent statistics indicate that approximately 14.5% or 109,040 Mississauga residents live in poverty, and last year alone, 575,789 people were helped by food banks in Ontario, so there are a lot of people who could use our help this year. Our local food banks have been working hard each and every day of the year to help those who are less fortunate put food on the table. In fact, the Mississauga Food Bank’s member agencies receive over 60,000 visits each month, and last year, the Eden Community Food Bank served 2,487 people from 875 households alone.

As you can imagine, during the holiday season, the need for assistance is great, and I know that our local food banks can certainly use our help this year. The Mississauga Food Bank (MFB) is the central food bank in Mississauga, serving over 2.5 million meals each year through its network of member agencies. The MFB serves the community by sourcing and distributing food to its network of member agencies, which includes neighbourhood food banks, before-school breakfast clubs, shelters, and hot meal programs. Another local food bank that serves our community is the Eden Community Food Bank (ECFB). The ECFB is a non-denominational food bank that was established in 1989. The ECFB assists individuals and families living in Mississauga in the L5M and L5N postal code areas.

The ECFB provides healthy, balanced food choices that meet cultural and dietary requirements, as well as basic need items, like personal care and hygiene products.

The ECFB also has a Community Learning Kitchen that provides cooking classes for food bank recipients, with volunteers who prepare nutritious food that is portioned and packaged for distribution through the food bank. If you are a gardener, you can also grow a row for the ECFB and donate your produce. The food and item donations may be dropped off at the ECFB’s Battleford center (Monday to Friday from 9am to 9pm), which is located at 3051 Battleford Road.

When you are grocery shopping for your family, consider purchasing an extra bag of items to help someone in need.

because the market won’t really go anywhere or you could even lose money over decade-long stretches. These things happen, but they are completely outside of your control.

Value For Money Investing means we wish to allocate and use our hardearned resources in order to improve investment outcomes in a continuous and sustainable way at a fair and equitable price. In other words, achieve good investment returns AND receive fair value for the services provided.

Costs do matter!

What you do control is your time horizon and time is often the most important variable to understand when making investment decisions. (emphasis is mine) This was a reminder to me about two very important thoughts. First, time horizons are the most important factor in portfolio construction and also the most important factor in achieving EXPECTED results. Establishing these time horizons takes careful and thorough financial planning. Financial planning informs you WHAT your nest egg is for and WHEN and how it will be used. The biggest answer comes from the WHEN(s). The horizon, until first use of your savings, and the cashflow plan during retirement give a series of WHENs. Using the series of WHENs as a guide, we largely know how to invest client’s assets, to best meet their unique needs.

Investing Made Easy.

If you are a regular reader of this column, you will know that I spend only a little time on actual investment issues, preferring to highlight and stress the importance and advantages of financial planning. This is mostly because of our oft repeated mantra at EWM, “good financial planning makes investing easy”.

Earlier this week I was reading an article in Ben Carlson’s Blog, A Wealth of Common Sense. It was a study in what to expect in the future after periods of above average returns. This is where we find ourselves in the stock markets today, particularly in the US. After much analysis, many charts and complicated reasoning, he had a simple observation…

Increasing your holding period is nothing more than knowing not to buy equities unless you can give them enough time to run. Working backwards from the series of WHENs, we can easily decide what level of equities is the right level for YOU.

…for long-term investor in the stock market, there are two very basic ways to improve your returns:

Secondly, buying more equities after a major correction or market crash, is indeed the optimum time to add to your equities. The corollary of this is that it is the least optimal time to buy equities after a long run up or outperformance.

You may never know when a market has peaked, but you surely can decide if it has recently fallen hard. Add to your equities when values are to your advantage. This is not market timing, this is good purchasing discipline.

(1) Buy low after there’s been a market crash.

(2) Increase your holding period. …the range of outcomes improves substantially as the holding period increases. The probability of loss goes down. Extreme outlier events decrease.

This doesn’t mean there are no losses during these longer time frames. Nothing works all the time. There will be periods in the stock market that are frustrating

Thus, helping people with: cash flow analysis and budgeting, goal planning, debt management, insurance and risk management to protect their income and dependants; assisting with employer contributory pension plan or group RSP allocations; raising discussions about estate planning, taxes, career, life planning, college and university funding, buying a home; and retirement projections is all about understanding the WHENs. It is also about helping with the equity purchase discipline.

Your portfolio is supposed to provide you with funds when you need them. For most, it is far more important to get the WHENs right, than it is to make as much money as possible and not have the funds when desired. Eventually having more wealth is a sad state if you missed all the dates for paying for what makes you happy. Funds need to be there when planned. Not before and certainly not too late. Identifying the amounts and dates of all future withdrawals from your portfolio is a great advantage when investing. So get the WHENs right and do not damage the horizons with poor purchasing decisions.
