s chairman of Hong Kong Hotels Association, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Hong Kong and to CityLife, the monthly magazine for visitors to Asia’s World City.

We hope April marks an upswing in hope and positive energy for the city, and for its hospitality industry in particular. As the level of new Covid-19 cases drops back substantially and with vaccination efforts get underway in earnest, social distancing restrictions continue to be eased. I note that some social distancing measures and a mandatory mask-wearing requirement continue to apply in all public spaces. The city remains mostly open, including all the hotels, the city’s transportation system, shopping malls, cinemas, shops and restaurants. And, excitingly, now quite a few events and activities are resuming. For prudence, though, we suggest that you contact your concierge for details of the latest updates and restrictions.

April’s weather remains mild and mostly agreeable – a good time to be out and about, checking out different parts of the city and its great outdoors. This month, our cover story showcases the satellite town of Tsuen Wan, likely not so familiar for most visitors but now quietly transformed into a dynamic new destination that you won’t want to miss. Abutting Kowloon, Tsuen Wan has long served as the gateway to the hinterland of the northwestern New Territories. Old villages co-exist sideby-side with large developments while major projects along the waterfront are changing both the landscape and character of this surprising town. There is plenty to do – enchanting temples, Hakka villages, specialty malls, picturesque waterfront, excellent food, and scenic hiking trails, Tsuen Wan has it all. Our series introducing the city’s history continues.

This month, we are highlighting an aspect of the city’s development that may come as a surprise – the long and laudable history of afforestation and broader greening undertaken by successive governments, dating back to the early days of British rule in the mid-1800s. Thanks to these efforts, and despite complaints about the city being a treeless concrete jungle, Hong Kong is one of the greenest metropolises in the world, with over 70 percent of its territory broadly natural, and with a geological diversity that is the envy of competitors. Please go to Page 10 of our feature story for more details.

As restaurants are now allowed to open in the evenings, there is no better time to indulge in the city’s rich food culture. The 45th Hong Kong International Film Festival

The Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) is one of Asia’s oldest and most distinguished platforms for filmmakers, film professionals and filmgoers from all over the world. This year the festival offers a mélange of in-theatre and online screenings. Audiences can enjoy watching new works and experience outstanding films as they choose.

HKIFF45 honours Stanley Kwan as this year’s Filmmaker-in-Focus. Kwan has crafted numerous classics and is best known for making films with feminine sensibilities. To celebrate his remarkable career, the festival will showcase 13 of Kwan’s seminal works.

Leisure and Cultural Services Department 2021

LCSD has set up exquisite garden plots and a Theme Flower Display and Tulip Display at designated parks across 18 districts to virtually present the Hong Kong Flower Show 2021 (Online Flower Show). The Online Flower Show is being held from March 19 to April 19 on the Hong Kong Flower Show dedicated website. Returning with the overall theme "City of Flowers, City of Love", the event features the rhododendron, considered a great beauty of the flower kingdom, as the theme flower. The public will surely enjoy this new experience from the Online Flower Show.

During the Online Flower Show period, the Hong Kong Science Museum will present a special exhibition, "Exploring Flowers with Five Senses", to let visitors explore the wonderful world of flowers with their senses. In addition, book displays on flowers and plants will be specially set up in the Hong Kong Central Library and the City Hall Public Library.

Tsuen Wan, gateway to the northwest New Territories and a vibrant satellite town undergoing dynamic transformation, has plenty to offer the intrepid visitor. 荃湾是通往新界西北的门户，也是一个充满活力的卫星 城市，正在经历着动态的变革，为喜欢探索的游客提供了很多 可以做的事情。

A

t first glance, the residential district of Tsuen Wan may seem an indistinct extension of western Kowloon’s urban sprawl. Look closer though, and you’ll find a vibrant town on the move, with shiny new developments sprouting along its scenic harbourfront, dramatically transforming its landscape. Yet Tsuen Wan has managed to retain its heritage and old neighbourhood charm, and also serves as the entry point to the western New Territories, with its networks of hiking trails into the mountains and around the reservoirs.

Tsuen Wan has historical pedigree; it is thought that village settlers arrived as early as two thousand years ago. A smattering of villages occupied the Shing Mung River Valley and fishermen lived along the shore of Rambler Channel, a natural harbour between Tsing Yi and Tsuen Wan. More recently, modest-scale factories were established from the early 1900s, followed by bigger textile and metalwork industries after WWII, as Hong Kong developed into a global light manufacturing powerhouse.

In the 1950s, to address burgeoning population growth, the Hong Kong Government initiated the development of satellite new towns. Tsuen Wan New Town, which took in Tsuen Wan, nearby Kwai Chung plus Tsing Yi, was the first such new town, with scores of housing estates built. Over the last two decades, Tsuen Wan’s landscape has been further transformed by several major projects on the waterfront, as well as the redevelopment of old factory estates.

Yet, amidst the urban sprawl, remnants of the old villages still dot the foothills above Tsuen Wan. With Tai Mo Shan, Hong Kong’s tallest peak, looming in the distance, the area also serves as a hub for outdoor activities via hiking trails to Shing Mung Reservoir, Tai Mo Shan and even Yuen Long.

SAM TUNG UK MUSEUM 三棟屋博物館

A former Hakka walled village founded by the Chan clan in the 18th century, Sam Tung Uk has been converted into a museum, comprising many well-preserved village buildings that display a range of fascinating artifacts, offering a glimpse of the old way of life. YUEN YUEN INSTITUTE 圓玄學院

On a sprawling site in the hills above Tsuen Wan, near Lo Wai Tsuen, Yuen Yuen Institute is dedicated to studying and spreading Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism. Visitors can take in a plethora of temples, pavilions and prayer halls. Be sure to stop by its main building, the Temple of Heaven, where worshippers pay tribute to each of the 60 Taoist deities on display inside the main hall. Sam Dip Tam, Lo Wai Road, Tsuen Wan 圓玄學院位於大圍村附近的荃灣山上，致力於研究和傳播道教、佛 教和儒學。遊客可以在眾多的寺廟、亭台樓閣和祈禱大廳前駐足參 觀。一定要去它的主樓天壇看看，天壇是供奉道教聖人的地方，裡 面陳列着60位道教聖人。荃灣老圍路三底潭。

WESTERN MONASTERY 西方寺

Built in the 1970s and then expanded in the 1990s, Western Monastery, which is located in Lo Wai Tsuen, is one of the largest and most ornate temples in Hong Kong, consisting of nine Chinese palace-style temples plus an open area displaying the various Buddhist deities. Amid the plentiful photo-ops, please be respectful – this is an active place of worship. Originally a cotton mill factory owned by Nam Fung Group, the Mills was redeveloped in 2018 into a cultural and heritage hub comprising art workshops, experiential retail and the Centre for Heritage Arts and Textile. The stunning architecture, bringing together three cotton mills as a single complex, offers plentiful Instagram spots. For a fun day out for the whole family, D-Park, a large shopping mall located in the large residential estate of Discovery Park, is your pick.

Rivalling the elevated walkway system in Central as Hong Kong’s most extensive, the Tsuen Wan network, emanating from Tsuen Wan MTR Station, allows pedestrians to walk to the town’s major commercial and residential complexes, including the new developments in Tsuen Wan West, up above the traffic. It makes for a pleasant and stress-free tour of the town’s major landmarks. 荃灣網路起於荃灣地鐵站，是中環高架人行道系統的最主要地段，行 人可以步行到鎮上主要的商業和住宅區，包括地處荃灣西的新發展項 目。一路步行可輕鬆暢遊城市主要地標。

CITYWALK 城市步行街

One of Tsuen Wan’s largest shopping centres, this mall is touted as Hong Kong first green mall, featuring Citywalk Plaza, a vertical garden, and a recycled chiller system. Adjacent to Tsuen Wan West MTR Station and accessible via the footbridge network. 荃灣最大的購物中心之一，號稱香港第一個綠色購物中心，以城市步 行街廣場、垂直花園和循環製冷系統為特色。鄰近荃灣西地鐵站，可 由行人天橋網路前往。

NINA TOWER 如心廣場

Originally slated to be the world’s tallest building, Nina Tower, which looms over Tsuen Wan’s skyline, is named after eccentric real estate magnate Nina Wang. Because of height restrictions on the flight path to Chek Lap Kok airport, the project had to be redesigned as twin towers – 80-storey and 42-storey buildings. It is still the tallest building in the New Territories and sixth in the city. The 800-room Nina Hotel occupies the top floors and visitors can explore the surrounding views at its 41st-floor sky lobby. 原本計劃建造的如心廣場是世界上最高的建築，聳立在荃灣的天際線上，以 地產大亨王如心的名字命名。由於該地點靠近通往赤鱲角機場的航線，高度 受到限制，因此大廈重新設計為80層及42層的雙子塔模式。它仍然是新界 最高的建築，也是香港第六高的建築。 荃灣西如心酒店擁有800間客房，位 於頂層，遊客可以在41層的空中大堂欣賞周圍的景色。

(荃灣公園、荃灣海濱花園公園及海濱長廊擴建部分) The Tsuen Wan promenade facing Tsing Yi Island across the Rambler Channel has been transformed into one of Hong Kong’s most scenic landmarks, thanks to several major projects over the last decade. The parks are now connected via the promenade and feature gardens, playgrounds, walking paths, a cycling track, a sports centre and sitting out areas – it is a most relaxing way to take in the waterfront. YUEN TSUEN ANCIENT TRAIL 元荃古道郊遊徑

This 15-kilometre trail connects Tsuen Wan with Yuen Long via the many villages in between and was the major route to the north-west before Castle Peak Road was built. Part of its length is a designated nature trail. For a moderate and vigorous hike, go from Tsuen Wan to Sham Tseng, or to really stretch the legs, keep going all the way to Yuen Long. ong Kong is often portrayed as a colossal concrete jungle, by denizens and visitors alike. And while many urban dwellers lament the lack of trees or greenery in and around the city’s streets, paradoxically, Hong Kong is also touted as a green metropolis, with 70 percent of its land area made up of largely unspoiled natural cover. So, what is the real story?

Well, as with most history, the reality is more complex than at first glance, and there is truth in both portraits of Hong Kong – as a densely developed urban concentration and a vast natural expanse. These efforts continue unabated today, thanks to the commitment of successive governments. A deficiency in kerbside foliage is amply compensated by the city’s diverse hinterland, one of its most heralded legacies. Let’s take a walk down memory lane to see how Hong Kong arrived at this fascinating paradox of concrete jungle enveloped by emerald landscape. And for good measure, we’ll suggest a few nature walks that showcase Hong Kong’s diverse natural environment.

AncientH ong Kong 古代的香港 Ecologically, Hong Kong was once a sub-tropical rainforest.

Then, around 1,000 years ago, settlers from southern China arrived and started to clear the forests. Over the centuries, Hong Kong lost most of its forest cover, so much so that upon gaining possession of Hong Kong in 1841, Lord Palmerston, the British Foreign Secretary, complained that all his country had acquired was “a barren rock with nary a house upon it”. The moniker was echoed by Milton Friedman, the renowned free-market economist and an admirer of Hong Kong, who described the city as a barren rock transformed by capitalism and limited government into an economic success story.

Both Palmerston and Friedman were unduly harsh, perhaps based on early photographs of the southeast side of Hong Kong Island when the British arrived – windswept slopes of the Peak that were mostly grassy vegetation and low shrubbery running unhindered to the shoreline. Trees were more likely to be found on the alluvial plains or in inland valleys, where villagers planted their feng shui forests behind their houses, plus some thriving mangrove wetlands.

Early Colonial Era Tree Growing Programmes 早期 殖民 时代 的树 木种 植计 划 Over the centuries, much of the n a t u r a l f o re s t c o v e r h a d b e e n denuded by local villagers for firewood and construction. The British government set about planting trees and various afforestation initiatives as soon as they arrived, recognising the myriad benefits, including health and hygiene, prevention of soil erosion, water conservation and beautification.

Early on, the government created a forestry department and in the 1870s it appointed Charles Ford, a botanist, as its superintendent of Government Gardens and Tree Planting. Ford went on to plant millions of trees and seedlings on the slopes of Hong Kong. Though he had mixed success, in part due to the uneven adaptability of imported tree species to the local ecology, the effort was a grand one.

Post WWII Afforestation 第二次世界大战后的绿化

Afforestation came to a halt during WWII during the Japanese occupation when the invaders cleared much of the forests for fuel. It was estimated that only four percent of the pre-war forest land remained. Re-forestation began again in earnest in the 1960s as the government added new reservoirs to solve water shortage problems and trees were planted around catchment areas to help retain and conserve soil and water. Then in the 1970s, the government made the consequential decision to designate over 40 percent of Hong Kong’s land area as country parks and embarked on an ambitious reforestation programme. Since then, various tree-planting initiatives have kept up the momentum in the country parks, with over 400,000 seedlings planted in 2015 alone.

These afforestation programmes and preservation of much of Hong Kong’s outdoor areas as country parks have been wildly popular and successful, a lasting and continuing legacy bequeathed to the people of Hong Kong. As mentioned, over 70 percent of Hong Kong is green and across its limited terrain, the city’s outdoors is home to amazing ecological and geographical diversity. For example, there are estimated to be more than 2,500 species of vascular trees, 450 species of birds and 200 species of butterflies here.

The urban landscape is not too shabby either. The city has made a concerted effort to create urban parks and gardens, especially in newer satellite town developments, offering convenient respite to urban dwellers. It should be noted that tree planting in the city’s streets is not as easy as might be thought. Much of the urban area sits on reclaimed land with no natural soil – not optimal for planting large or tall trees, especially given the string of typhoons that pummel the city each year.

From an overall perspective though, the city’s hilly terrain and dense vertical living have left Hong Kong with most of its land area covered in green vegetation, a common backyard to be enjoyed by residents and visitors, and another distinct feature that helps make Hong Kong such a fascinating and paradoxical city – we are truly blessed.

Doubled-boiled Pear with Braised Pork Belly is another innovative dish. The savoury pork blends comfortably with the light, sweet taste of the pear, for a nicely balanced flavour. Next, the Braised Cabbage in Pumpkin and Ginger Soup serves as a healthy interlude before Warm Udon with Assorted Seafood Served with Lobster Soup, another dish in which careful preparation of the soup’s flavour balance is a must.

Courtyard Marriott is now offering a special Deluxe Cantonese-Japanese Bespoke Tasting Menu ($1,288/ person) in its presidential suite, for discerning diners and guests, and this was the purpose of our visit. The hotel also offers an Early Summer Deluxe Hand-crafted Tasting Menu ($898), served in the presidential suite.

Our menu choice was the eight-course meal created

by Chef Tam, the hotel’s Executive Chef. Chef Tam aims to create a sumptuous meal, combining quality seasonal ingredients, meticulous preparation, and his well-honed cooking craft. We could barely wait!

The meal started with Chef’s Specialties Trio – baked puff pastry with veal and assorted mushrooms, barbecued pork with black truffle, and deep-fried oyster. Each dim sum item is exquisitely crafted and presented.

We wrapped up with a duo of desserts: Doubledboiled Lotus Seed with Dried Red Dates and Peach Resin and Bird’s Nest Egg Tart, both of which are delicious and hit the spot nicely.

We heartily recommend you pair a sumptuous meal like this with a quality wine from Courtyard Marriott’s wide selection.

re you intrigued to try a novel twist on one of the city’s most popular culinary genres? We certainly were when the opportunity arose to dine at the newly opened Victorian Era, a high-end hotpot specialty restaurant whose name harks back to a bygone age.

Since hotpot restaurants are “a dime a dozen” in Hong Kong, it can be quite a challenge for a new hotpot restaurant to stand out, especially in Jordan, one of the city’s most vibrant food districts, crowded with outlets of all cuisines.

Imagine our surprise when we entered Victorian Era, a large, spacious outlet with rather striking décor. The design theme of the restaurant pays tribute not to the venerable British queen, but rather to the 1950s, when Hong Kong was rapidly transforming into an entrepot, a manufacturing hub, and an East-meet-West cultural melting pot, thanks to the influx of people, capital and know-how from mainland China. The brightly lit restaurant is decorated with artefacts from the 1950s, evoking the nostalgia and glamour of yesteryear. One room is adorned with mirrors and set aside as an Instagram spot, and customers were lined up to snap photos galore. Not your typical hotpot outlet, that’s for sure.

Victorian Era specialises in innovative high-end hotpot offerings, sharply presented. The restaurant sources quality ingredients from around the world – meats, seafood, mushrooms, vegetables and specially concocted soup bases for the hot pot.

Choosing the right soup base is important. Victorian Era’s signature soup base is the Milk Soup with Rose Buds ($168) which uses Japanese Hokkaido milk mixed with Japanese rosebuds. Other bases are Sichuan Spicy Soup ($98), Thai-style Seafood Tom Yum Soup ($198), House Satay Soup ($98), Century Egg and Coriander Soup ($98), and Dou Hot Pot Soup ($118).

The restaurant offers an extensive menu of seafood hotpot items, several types of beef, Iberico pork, Australian lamb and farm cage-free chicken.

There is also a large complement of beef and seafood balls, dumplings, mushrooms and fresh vegetables for sides.

We chose the signature Hong Kong Platter ($788), which is an all-beef combo served on a large, ornate dish with the meats were placed on a round tray along the perimeter. The beef items include handcut beef slices, beef cubes, U.S. Angus beef, beef shin, bovine sternum cartilage, bovine pericardium, black beef tripe and beef tongue – there is a lot of bovid there, for sure. The beef items come in various textures and flavours and are perfect for hearty eaters.

We augmented the beef platter with other ingredients, including Japanese Pearl Oysters ($78), Sliced Boneless Grass Carp Belly ($88), Trio Dumplings ($88), House Trio Cuttlefish Balls ($78), Nuts and Cuttlefish Paste Stuffed Chinese Donut ($78), and Watercress ($38) – a quite sumptuous meal, indeed!

There is also an extensive collection of cocktails, wines, Japanese sakes, beers, teas and others to go with the hot pot.

Victorian Era offers a most interesting combination of visual and gastronomic treats – excellent food, striking décor, and a relaxed and friendly ambience.

It is detained to make its mark in the city’s dining scene. So, if you are planning a fun and happy hotpot gathering with friends, give it a try! ■

The first new item is Scallops with Spinach “Esparregado”, Watercress, Bacon and White Port-Lemon Vinaigrette ($132), an appetiser featuring scallops, citric juice and creamy spinach mash. We also had Bacalhau a Bras ($145), not a new dish, but a Portuguese favourite made with salted cod shreds, onions and chopped fried potatoes, cooked with scrambled eggs.

Iberico Pork Secretos “Bifana” Sandwich with Green Chilli-gherkin Mayo ($118) is another innovation. An upscale version of the popular Macanese pork-shop bun, this savoury sandwich uses Iberico pork secretos seasoned with paprika, bay leaves, garlic, pepper onion and mustard before it is slow cooked and served with a tangy mayo sauce.

Grill Sea Bass with “Acorda Alentejana” of Clams, Green Beans and Samphire ($288) is a traditional soup dish modernised by Casa Lisboa’s chefs; the sea bass is grilled and flavoured with olive oil, garlic, salt, lime juice and lemon juice.

Slow-cooked Iberico Pork Collar Stew with Plums, Chestnuts and Broccolini ($290) is next. The Iberico pork neck is slow cooked for 12 hours and then braised with tomatoes, plums, chestnuts, bay leaves.

The dessert is “Torta De Laranja” Portuguese Orange Roll with Moscatel Roxo ($80), a yummy roll cake in a citrus flavour enhanced by the muscatel-based dressing.

All the dishes go well with wine. Casa Lisboa houses a nice collection of wines from Portugal. We had 2018 Casa Ferreirinha Esteva Douro, a red, and a dry, sweet 2006 Domingos Soares Franco Moscatel Roxa de Setubal, both more than fit for purpose.

DPD Deluxe 大牌檔 The recent opening of DPD Deluxe in Fortress Hill, a caféstyle outlet serving both Western and Chinese cuisines, is quickly garnering attention for its eclectic menu items, bright ambience, and food quality. While DPD stands for ‘dai pai dong’, the traditional local Chinese eatery, DPD Deluxe is far up the scale from any dai pai dong imaginable. Its sleek and modern décor is bright, warm and friendly, offering customers a comfortable setting for a relaxed meal.

DPD Deluxe’s menu, created by two separate teams of chefs, offers a mix of contemporary, trendy, and healthy Chinese and Western dishes that appeal to urban millennials, using seasonal and fresh ingredients from all over the world. There is also a smattering of vegetarian dishes featuring OmniPork and Beyond Burger as alternatives.

DPD Deluxe serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.

We were there for lunch and the restaurant was packed, mainly with office workers. For starters, we chose Wild Mushroom Cappuccino with Black Truffle Bread and Tofu Skewers ($60), which was a new, and tasty, dish for us – the tofu is an inspired touch. We also chose Crispy Shrimp Toast with Tobiko ($68), a yummy combo of shrimp and fish roe. For the entrees, we had dishes from several cuisines: French Blue Mussel Pot ($188) with garlic and rosemary cream sauce and sourdough is excellent; Tom Yum Seafood Soup ($148) with rice noodles is zesty and appetising; Grilled U.S. Prime Grain-fed Rib-eye ($198) with vegetables and potatoes and Dijon mustard is also a winner; as is Spaghetti Aglio E Olio ($138) with Hokkaido scallop, a tasty, aromatic dish.

Vivarium 點．魚 The recently opened Vivarium is introducing a contemporary Sichuan cuisine concept that is sure to interest connoisseurs of spicy food. Tucked in a two-storey space on busy Wellington Street, above Central, Vivarium offers a full-throated spicy Sichuanese menu comprising lunch and dinner sets, plus à la carte items.

Several lunch-set menu options feature either Taiwanese herb soup or chilli lunch set. All set lunches include dim sum and appetiser.

We sampled quite a few dishes, ranging from the traditional to the innovative. For snacks and dim sum items, we chose Chilli Sliced Lotus Root ($23), Chilli Shrimp Toast, 2 pieces ($28), Chilli Mushroom Bun, 3 pieces ($32), Spicy Spring Roll, 2 pieces ($36), and Chilli Pork Dumpling, 3 pieces ($36), plus Shrimp & Pork Wonton in Sichuan Chilli Oil, 5 pieces ($69). To us, Vivarium’s spiciness is subtler and more refined than the redhot Chongqing spicy cuisine, closer to Chengdu cuisine, but is nevertheless spicy enough.

We then tried several Sichuanese pickled fish soup dishes – they tend to be tangier and zestier than spicy, but appetising as well.

We had Fish Fillet in Sichuanese Picked Soup ($86), and Angus Beef in Sichuanese Pepper Soup ($86), which is quite tender and flavourful and a real treat. As part of a lunch set, diners can choose among rice noodles, steamed rice and the house-made sliced noodles.

We also had Poached Chicken in Sichuanese Chilli Sauce with Rice ($80, lunch-set price), another popular Sichuan dish, before embarking on desserts that included Iced Noodles in Brown Sugar Syrup ($28) and Mango Pudding ($28). Vivarium also offers craft beers and cold brew tea. Our Cold Brew Peach Oolong Tea ($30) and Cold Brew Phoenix Oolong ($30) are both worth trying.

IDENTIFYING IRISH INFLUENCES 辨識愛爾蘭的影響

very red-blooded Irishman gets palpitations at the exaggerated claims that Hong Kong was once effectively a Scottish colony, founded and run by the Scots. As St. Patrick's Day falls on the 17th of this month, it is about time somebody gave the Irish their due credit.

It is true that Scottish traders like William Jardine, James Matheson and James Innes, the Laird of Dunkinty, started the Opium War following which Hong Kong was ceded to the British – but it was the Irish who did most of the fighting.

Captain Charles Elliot (another Scot) first took possession of Hong Kong but it was left to two great Irishmen, the first governor of Hong Kong, Sir Henry Pottinger, and military globetrotter Major General Sir Hugh Gough to clean up the mess.

When Pottinger stepped ashore to sign the Treaty of Nanking, the band played St Patrick's Day, not Scotland for Ever, and it was the 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment who acted as his guard of honour. They had borne the brunt of the fighting, with a little help from the Indian Army and four dozen gunboats.

Sir Henry Pottinger was a man of action.

Before he was 21, he had set off on a spying mission through Baluchistan, Afghanistan and Persia disguised as a Tartar horse dealer. At one stage he pretended to be a holy man and got trapped in religious debate. To convince a Baluchi village elder that you are a venerable Tartar Hadji when you speak with a thick Belfast accent requires a measure of self-confidence and more than a little blarney.

Another great Irishman, Sir Richard Graves MacDonnell, ruled Hong Kong 'with wholesome terror' as his last posting in a string of senior administrative roles across the British Empire.

The historian Ernst Eitel, who knew him well, quoted Shakespeare to comment on the departure of this dreaded autocrat: “Here goes a Caesar! When comes such another?”

The now thoroughly cowed citizens of Hong Kong welcomed, with immense relief, the fourth Irish governor of Hong Kong, the kindly old Sir Arthur Kennedy. Sir Arthur’s style of governing was to do as little as possible and to be nice to everybody. He thus established the popular, don’t rock the boat' policy, which remained the cornerstone of Hong Kong’s political philosophy

until the arrival of Chris Patten, the colony’s last governor. Kennedy was the first governor to have had a statue erected in his honour.

However, Kennedy was the lull before the storm. ln 1877, Sir John Pope Hennessy arrived in town. He was an unpredictable maverick who quarrelled with anybody and everybody. The army commander General Donovan, yet another Irishman, so loathed the governor that he refused to provide a military band to play at Government House on the Queen's birthday.

It took all the experience and skill of the seventh Irish governor, Sir George Bowen to restore harmony. Happily, Bowen was soon able to report to the prime minister, Lord Derby, that all was well. He added smugly that: "The ordinary work of a civil governor of Hong Kong... is not materially different from the ordinary work of the Mayor of Portsmouth." When Bowen retired in 1885, Hong Kong had been governed by the Irish for 26 consecutive turbulent years. It was during this time that Hong Kong came of age.

While, it could be said, the Scots and the English were busy making money for themselves, it was the Irish civil servants who built the infrastructure that made modern Hong Kong possible. The next Irish governor was Sir Henry Blake, who took control of the New Territories.

Unfortunately he blemished his reputation when he looted the gates of Kam Tin, to decorate his stately home in Ireland. The Hong Kong flower, Bauhinia Blakeana, a sterile hybrid, is named after this Irish vandal. In a final irony, the flower that bears his name was incorporated into the flag of the new Hong Kong Special Administrative Region under China and can be seen flying outside Government headquarters at Tamar today.■

Censers were popular in the Han dynasty. This goose-shaped censer is life-like. The back of the goose body is latticed, allowing smoke to rise from it. The censer is similar in function to the more well-known boshanlu-style censers from the Han period, but its form is very different. Incense was burned not just for the aroma, but also for practical reasons, such as acting as an insect repellent, and to purify the air. Until 8 May The emerging sport of FPV drone racing features prominently both as live performance and as recorded video work. The races advance a conversation about humanity’s relationship to speed and progress at large. They exemplify Philosopher Paul Virilio’s concept of “dromology,” (the science or logic of speed), a term he coined positing that the development of society and culture is akin to a race—with the fastest competitor being the most successful. Further still, drone racing also collapses the boundaries between man and machine. As pilots wear immersive VR headsets to pilot the drones via onboard cameras, their vision becomes the drones’ vision and their movements become the drones’ movements.

This melding of man and machine manifests the collective desire to transcend our physical, mortal bodies and accelerate towards a more efficient, faster, and cybernetic existence. Centre for Heritage and Arts The revitalised Central Police Station compound, the largest heritage project in Hong Kong, has opened its doors to the public as Tai Kwun – Centre for Heritage and Arts. The CPS compound comprises 16 historic buildings, including three declared monuments (Central Police Station, Central Magistracy and Victoria Prison), on a 13,600-square-metre site in the heart of Central. An international-grade art gallery and an auditorium have been added to contribute to the adaptive reuse of the site. The heritage site includes new art galleries and the Parade Ground and Prison Yard. After six years, I joined the newly opened Hotel Icon, which is a teaching hotel, wanting to learn more about the hotel business. I later moved to Hotel Sav as Assistant Chief Concierge.

That’s when I became a member of the Golden Keys Society, which was a proud moment for me.
