n behalf of the Hong Kong Rugby Union, it gives me great pleasure to welcome all visitors to the 2019 Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens and the world-famous ‘Rugby Week’ in Hong Kong. Another outstanding weekend of world-class sports entertainment awaits, with 40 international teams, across both men’s and women’s sevens competitions, visiting Hong Kong for one of rugby’s most unique gatherings. They are joined by an estimated 20,000 international rugby fans visiting Hong Kong in the same period. We greatly appreciate the support and enthusiasm of all the fans, both local and international, as well as the publishers for helping spread the message and excitement to even more international visitors – especially with our multiple fan activations around the city fully open to the public so that everyone can share the Sevens spirit during their stay. The HKRU has once again worked hard to ensure that this unparalleled weekend well serves its deserving causes. Not only does the Sevens support the continued growth of rugby in Hong Kong, it is improving lives around the world through the power of sport, thanks to our continued association with Laureus, the Official Charity of the Hong Kong Sevens. We are also striving to minimise the environmental footprint of this fantastic weekend through our Green Sevens campaign, with reusable pints introduced this year to minimise single-use plastic waste. We ask all fans and tourists visiting Hong Kong to join our efforts and help keep Hong Kong beautiful by properly disposing of refuse. With the lure of promotion to the World Series for the men’s and women's teams in the qualifiers, and the World Series sides chasing automatic qualification for the 2020 Olympics, the competition on pitch is sure to be thrilling. W
ith the Rugby World Cup being held in Asia for the first time later this year, some might think that the game is a newcomer to the world’s most populous region. But the return of the world-famous Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens for a 44th year in 2019 belies that idea. Not only is this year’s Sevens once again the largest tournament on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, also playing host to men’s and women’s series qualifier competitions that see 40 teams doing battle in Hong Kong this April – it is the world’s largest gathering of international rugby unions, with double the number of competing teams at the Rugby World Cup later this year (20). Most importantly for the expected 120,000 fans packing the iconic Hong Kong Stadium and the 12 million more watching live worldwide, the Hong Kong Sevens remains one of the sporting world’s ultimate bucket list events, combining a whirlwind of international rugby and revelry across three days and 70 games of pulsating action, punctuated by thumping live music, roving entertainment and more costumes than a Hollywood set. The stars of the show are once again the 15 teams taking part in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, with Hong Kong’s typical rivalry between Fiji and New Zealand being busted up this season by the United States Eagles, who enter Hong Kong ranked first in the world and atop the Series for the first time on their 39th appearance here.

The USA team are a model of consistency, reaching the finals of all four opening legs, losing twice to New Zealand and twice to Fiji, before a breakthrough win at their home event in Las Vegas – successfully defending their title from last year’s Sevens on the strip.

The Eagles failed to reach the finale for the first time in Vancouver, the event preceding Hong Kong on the schedule, with South Africa surging to claim their first title in their first finals appearance of the year. That win earned South Africa an automatic seed at the top of Pool A in Hong Kong where they will face off with a resurgent Samoa team under legendary coach Sir Gordon Tietjens, gritty Scotland, and Rugby World Cup hosts Japan. The ever-unpredictable French also reached their first cup match of the year in Vancouver, finishing in second and shaking up the seedings for Hong Kong. Les Bleus will top Pool B in Hong Kong alongside Argentina, Canada and Portugal – the invitational 16th team in the series competition. With Pools A and B throwing up some unpredictable draws, Pool C soon shaped up as the group of death in Hong Kong when Fiji – third-placed finishers in Vancouver – were seeded in the same group as New Zealand, Australia and a Kenya side known to cause upsets. Unusually, Fiji and New Zealand – the historic Hong Kong rivals who account for 29 of the event’s 44 cups – will face off in the pool stages, while the draw results also see the All Blacks Sevens ranked second in the pool, despite being above third-placed Fiji in the Series standings. With the sixth-placed Aussies and a Kenyan side capable of causing upsets rounding out the pool, where the two top teams will advance to the cup play-offs at the end of Saturday, this year’s competition could shake up the Series table ahead of the final tournaments in Paris and London. The sharp-eyed USA Eagles will be enjoying their far more comfortable roost atop Pool D, which they share with England, Wales and Spain. Only one thing is always guaranteed from the Cathay Pacific/ HSBC Hong Kong Sevens: anything can happen – and likely will!

Gold Rush!
With this year also a qualification year for the rugby sevens competition at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, the action - and aspirations are even hotter. The Olympics will feature 12 teams in each of the men’s and women’s tournaments. The top four teams from the Men’s and Wo m e n ’s Wo r l d S e r i e s t h i s s e a s o n w i l l automatically qualify for the Games, while other teams will qualify through their regional competitions and a final international repechage event to determine the 12th and final teams in Tokyo. The Asian qualifiers featuring the Hong Kong men’s and women’s sevens teams will be in South Korea this November.

With promotion and relegation from the international series (Russia was relegated from the Series and replaced by Japan in last year’s men’s event, while China went up and Japan down in the women’s competition) the quality in the qualifiers is always at a world-class standard. Adding to the challenge is the return of ten of last year’s 12 teams in both tournaments.

Ireland, who reached the semi-finals in the Qualifier in Hong Kong last season, and the semi-finals of the Cup competition as an invited team at the World Series event in Twickenham to close out the year, top Pool F in the Qualifier. They will have to grapple with experienced World Series outfit Russia who will be keen to regain promotion under their new coach in Hong Kong Sevens legend Fiji’s Waisale Serevi. Uruguay and Jamaica round out the Pool. Last year’s losing semi-finalists Chile and Germany will bash each other in Pool G alongside African qualifiers Uganda and Cook Islands from Oceania. Hong Kong’s hometown heroes, under a new coach and captain in Scotland’s Iain Monaghan and Melody Li Nim-yan, will be hopeful of booking their 2020 place at this year’s event, but must contend with a tough international field. Japan, relegated from last year’s Series, enter as the top seeds in Pool A, which they share with Belgium, Scotland and Mexico. Kenya, Papua New Guinea and Uganda join Hong Kong in Pool B, while Brazil, Argentina, Kazakhstan and Poland feature in Pool C. After the pool rounds on Thursday 4 April, at So Kon Po, directly across from the Hong Kong Stadium, the teams will be ranked based on their pool results, 1 to 12. The top eight will advance to a knockout competition on Day Two (Friday 5 April) inside the Hong Kong Stadium at the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens. The winners proceed to the Cup semi-finals while the losers are knocked out.

The GFI HKFC 10s, arguably the world’s best 10-a-side rugby tournament, attracts top players and teams from around the globe. 10,000 spectators over two days will cheer on action-packed competition by 16 teams with live international TV coverage. This year, Biarritz Gavekal, who won a close 2417 battle against Tradition YCAC last year to win the tournament, will attempt to make it three on the trot as they defend their title against stalwart contenders including the powerful Mourant Fiji Army, making their debut in Hong Kong and perennial powerhouses Asia Pacific Dragons, Grove Penguins, and Samurai International, among others. This year, the tournament will feature a charity match, the Rugby Legends Tackle Cancer at the GFI HKFC, on 4 April, with past sevens and 15s legends including New Zealand’s Ben Forbes, England’s Ben Collins, and Australia’s David Campese among star names confirmed to participate to help raise money for the event's official charity the Hong Kong Cancer Fund. For fun and sheer love of the game, there is probably no better social rugby tournament in the world than the Kowloon RugbyFest, taking place this year on the Wednesday of Hong Kong Sevens Rugby Week, 3 April. Since its inception in 2001 and first competition in March 2002, the RugbyFest has grown in size and popularity to become an integral part of the Hong Kong annual rugby frenzy. Featuring teams from around the world, the RugbyFest hosts men’s and ladies’ competitions, with pool matches played throughout the day, culminating in the finals from 5pm. T
he Hong Kong Sevens is more than just a celebration of rugby, it’s a party for a good cause with the Hong Kong Rugby Union doubling down on its Green Sevens efforts to reduce the environmental impact of the weekend’s revelry in 2019. First instituted in 2014, the Green Sevens campaign has helped reduce waste generated at the popular event by nearly 70%. With over 400,000 pints expected to be consumed over the weekend, the HKRU is this year targeting single-use plastics by introducing reusable pint cups. Spectators are being asked to pay a HK$10 deposit for a reusable cup, which on leaving they may return and reclaim their $10, or drop into one of the charity cup collection bins and have the deposit donated to Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, the official charity of the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens. Together with the Hong Kong Rugby Union’s Community Foundation, Laureus will apply the funds raised in and around the Sevens for sports activities that effect positive change in the lives of young people around the world, including the hosting at this year’s event of a group of deaf rugby-playing youth from Vietnam and Laos. For 2019, the HKRU has invested in 250,000 reusable pints, which are made from fully recycled plastic and have a lifespan of five years. These will be collected, washed and sanitised, and reused over the event weekend, and then serve other international competitions and even non-HKRU events year-round. At recent editions of the Hong Kong Sevens, the public has responded well to a similar initiative, re-using plastic jugs, with spectators receiving a discount for refilling their jug. With the introduction of reusable cups, HKRU calls on fans to Tackle Waste to Win!

ith ith the stadium consistently sold out over Sevens weekend, the Hong Kong Rugby Union makes significant efforts to share the excitement with the wider community. In recent years, the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens citywide fan zones have attracted more cumulative visitors than the 120,000 spectators inside the stadium over the tournament weekend. In 2019, the HKRU is focusing its efforts on two fan zones, at the Harbourfront Event space on Hong Kong’s iconic waterfront in Central and at Lee Gardens in Hong Kong’s premier shopping district of Causeway Bay.

In exciting news for local rugby enthusiasts, for the first time ever, a Rugby 15s team, the FWD South China Tigers, has been formed in Hong Kong to represent the Greater Bay Area in a new regional competition focused on Asia Pacific, the Global Rapid Rugby Showcase Series. At 70 minutes long, a Rapid Rugby match is a sped-up version of traditional rugby 15s match and generates the kind of pace and non-stop action associated with sevens rugby. Six teams – from Hong Kong, Singapore, Samoa, Fiji, Australia and a combined World XV – will play in the inaugural Showcase Series, with Hong Kong hosting two matches, on 21 April and 12 May at Aberdeen Sports Ground. The South China Tigers team will include, for the first time, international players from both China and Hong Kong, all with Greater China roots. The new league is set to provide lashings of high-octane fun. Don’t miss it!

The Sevens party is also rocking all over Causeway Bay, home of the Hong Kong Stadium and the Cathay Pacific/ HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, with the FanWalk at Lee Gardens. Back for another exciting year, the FanWalk delights both Sevens goers on the way to the Stadium and the throngs of local and international shoppers who descend on Causeway Bay every day. The FanWalk at Lee Gardens provides fun for the entire family over Sevens weekend with a state-of-the-art Ninja Course by Ninja Coalition on offer for kids six and up. Participants race against the clock to tackle a number of obstacles across two difficulty levels, including challenges such as Five Step, Sea of Balls, Hanging Bridge, Log Grip, Warped Wall and Tilted Ladder. Professional Ninjas including Olympic silver medallist Jonathan Horton and Hollywood stuntwoman Tiana Webberley will be on hand to showcase their talent and offer guidance. Kids of all ages will be entertained by stilt walkers, face painting, caricature artists, live action dinosaurs, jugglers, acrobats, living statues and more. Live music and look-alikes of Mr Bean and John Travolta add to the excitement over the weekend. The rides end at Ngong Ping theme village, which features a variety of dining, shopping and entertainment options. This idyllic island south off Hong Kong Island is a weekend favourite among locals. Start at Yung Shue Wan village and hike to Sok Kwu Wan, passing by a tranquil beach, a gentle hill with gorgeous views along the way and a wetland area. End with a meal at a seafood restaurant at Sok Kwu Wan before heading back to Central. Cantonese restaurants abound in the city, ranging from the economical to the super-pricey. A dim sum lunch, at any full-scale Cantonese restaurant, is a must. Maxim’s at City Hall is a visitor favourite; Loong Yuen at the Holiday Inn Golden Mile is also an excellent choice. Seafood is a staple of Cantonese cuisine, and a seafood dinner at one of these restaurants is another must-do. Chuk Yuen Seafood Restaurant serves good seafood fare at reasonable prices. For excellent food with a view, try Nanhai No. 1 in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Asian cuisines are amply represented here. Japanese food of all types are highly popular with locals. Grand Plaza in Mong Kok has a collection of quality Japanese restaurants. Towada Sushi in TST is a hidden gem for sushi lovers. Malaysian food also has a large fan base, and Café Malacca at the Hotel Jen in Western District serves arguably the best Malaysian fare in town. The Namo Avant Thai Restaurant at Alfresco Lane in East Tsim Sha Tsui serves sophisticated Thai dishes in a relaxed setting. Uniquely among Chinese cities and undoubtedly influenced by its British heritage, western food is hugely popular in Hong Kong – and there are so many to choose from. All major western cuisines are well-represented and many international celebrity chefs are established here including the new Gordon Ramsay maze Grill at Ocean Terminal Extension. For dining with a view, Aqua in Tsim Sha Tsui is a favourite; for the ultimate in French fine dining, the three-Michelin star L’Atalier Joel Robuchon at the Landmark in Central sets the benchmark. Belgian mussels and frites are also popular – the Belgos at Lee Garden Three in Causeway Bay offers generous servings of both, plus beer, of course. Western buffet is also is popular – most of the city’s hotels offer a nice spread. Or if you want a grand view with a sumptuous spread check out the Grand Buffet, a revolving restaurant at the top of Hopewell Centre which offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the city. Dragon’s Back 龍脊行山樂 A spectacular hiking trail along the mountain ridge behind Shek O, itself an idyllic beach on the southeastern part of Hong Kong Island. Yes, you can ride a bicycle in Hong Kong, and without worrying about road traffic. The 16km ride along a dedicated bike path from Sha Tin to Tai Po along the Shing Mun River is level with clear signage.
