L’11 luglio 2013, i sindaci di Cassino, Norcia e Subiaco, prendendo come riferimento i principi di pace e unità diffusi da San Benedetto, firmarono il Patto di Amicizia, con lo scopo di creare una politica di cooperazione. Attraverso questo documento i tre sindaci promettono di sostenere lo scambio di informazioni di tipo culturale, economico e sociale, per rinforzare il già profondo legame che lega Cassino Subiaco e Norcia. Inoltre, le tre città si impegnano ad affrontare le difficoltà economiche attraverso delle forme di interazione e sviluppo, e di educare le nuove generazioni sulla base dell’impronta culturale e sociale che San Benedetto ha lasciato in queste comunità.

On 11th july 2013 the mayors of Cassino, Norcia and Subiaco signed an act called Patto di Amicizia, a sort of friendship agreement by which the three cities established a cooperation policy, following the principles of peace and unity spread by Saint Benedict. The three mayors promised to support social, culture and economic information exchange to endorse the historical bond between Cassino, Norcia and Subiaco. They also promised to face economical problems by making partnership and development plans, and to educate young generations on the basis of Saint Benedict's cultural and social imprinting.

che i Gemellaggi e i Patti di Amicizia fra Comuni stabiliscono vincoli permanenti di fraternità e cooperazione solidale, fondati di San Benede o protagonisti degli su un atto solenne sottoscritto dai Sindaci in nome e per conto dei loro cittadini, chiamati ad essereoftto i veri scambi a tutti i livelli ed in molteplici settori;

CONSIDERATO che le Città di Norcia, Subiaco e Cassino, pur essendo fisicamente e geograficamente distanti, hanno come comune denominatore la figura di uno dei più importanti padri del cristianesimo moderno, San Benedetto, Patrono d’Europa; CONSIDERATO che le tre municipalità, proprio per queste affinità elettive, organizzano ogni anno, in occasione della Festa di San Benedetto del 21 marzo, un’iniziativa molto sentita dai cittadini: “La Fiaccola Benedettina” che, accesa nelle tre città benedettine, giunge ogni anno in una capitale europea, al fine di valorizzare il patrimonio culturale, religioso, turistico ed economico delle tre città benedettine; DATO ATTO

che il Comune di Subiaco ha manifestato la volontà di stabilire una cooperazione duratura con i comuni di Norcia e Cassino, per favorire la conoscenza reciproca e l’istituzione di relazioni di amicizia tra le tre comunità locali, attraverso scambi culturali ed altre iniziative, favorendo legami permanenti;

ACCERTATO

che la medesima volontà di istituzionalizzare in modo permanente un rapporto di alto valore e significato, ispirato alle comuni radici storiche, culturali e religiose, è stata espressa anche dal Comune di Norcia e dal Comune di Cassino;

consacrano la loro amicizia e la loro volontà di cooperare per la fratellanza delle rispettive comunità e dell’intera Nazione con un solenne

“Patto di Amicizia” Attraverso il quale, con la reciproca conoscenza, nel rispetto e nella solidarietà dei loro cittadini, possano dar corso ad una nuova stagione di pace, di prosperità, di collaborazione, nell’affermazione dei comuni valori morali e civili, quei valori che San Benedetto ha diffuso in tutta Europa.

Noi Sindaci certi di rispondere alle profonde aspirazioni e ai bisogni reali delle popolazioni con le quali abbiamo rapporti quotidiani e delle quali abbiamo la responsabilità, in questo giorno assumiamo l’impegno di: • cooperare per la fratellanza delle rispettive comunità e dell’intera Nazione; • stabilire legami di amicizia e di scambio tra le nostre Municipalità, con il fine di valorizzare l’esperienza già in atto tra le tre Città; • formare i giovani al rispetto delle tradizioni dei nostri Comuni, tenendo sempre in considerazione l’impronta culturale che San Benedetto ha

lasciato alle nostre comunità; • promuovere lo scambio di informazioni geografiche, sociali, culturali, sportive ed economiche tra le rispettive collettività; • incentivare tutte le iniziative tese all’educazione, alla formazione, alla cooperazione scientifica, tecnica e tecnologica, all’ambiente, alla cultura,

all’agricoltura e al turismo; • fornire ai giovani cittadini la possibilità di confrontarsi, affinché possano ampliare i propri orizzonti culturali e rapportarsi con differenti realtà

sociali; • affrontare le diverse problematiche economiche e turistiche ricercando forme di interazione, scambio e sviluppo; • facilitare la gestione amministrativa mediante confronto delle modalità di governo locale dei rispettivi comuni; • congiungere i gli sforzi ed operare sinergicamente per assicurare il successo di questa impresa propedeutica e necessaria, affinché la pace e la prosperità possano affermarsi in tutto il mondo.

When in 1964 Pope paul V1 proclamed Saint Benedetto patron Saint of Europe he wanted to emphasize his ability to unify the nations under the principles of peace religion and civilazation. In a period of grand social crisis, which saw the collapse of the Roman Empire and moral decline, the image of Benedict was able to restore hope to the old continent, reconstructing a new identity around the values of unity and civilization positively experienced by the Saint and by his followers in the monastries.

Norcia, Subiaco and Cassino represent the mainstay of this social progress and taking inspiration of unity and brotherhood that the benedictine order has spread throughout Europe, the three cities merge together becoming halting places of a single itinerary, religious, cultural and naturalistic. Many are in fact the projects developed in recent years that have seen these three ci-

ties the main destination of many faithful and travellers interested in doing the journey of Benedict, without neglecting the immense artistic and natural heritage that surrounds Norcia, Subiaco and Cassino. Norcia

Storia Anticamente chiamata "Nursia", Norcia è situata nel cuore della Valnerina, nella pianura di Santa Scolastica, al centro di un’area ricca di testimonianze archeologiche che confermano la presenza dell’uomo fin dal paleolitico medio. Fu importante centro strategico sabino che trasse il nome da "Northia", divinità propiziatrice di fortuna, venerata dagli etruschi.

Nel 268 a.C., Norcia divenne Prefettura prima e Comune romano poi. La sua fama in questo periodo è legata ai prodotti della campagna, alla rigidità del clima (che le valse l’epiteto virgiliano di ‘frigida’), e a quella dei suoi figli più illustri, con il generale repubblicano Sertorio in prima fila e la madre dell’imperatore Vespasiano, Vespasia Polla.

Nel IV secolo Norcia fu sede di dioce-

si mentre nel 480 nacquero a Norcia i Santi gemelli Benedetto e Scolastica.

Al crollare dell’impero romano, mentre alcune regioni d’Europa sembravano cadere nelle tenebre ed altre erano ancora prive di civiltà e di valori spirituali, San Benedetto e i suoi monaci portarono il progetto cristiano a tutte le popolazioni sparse dal Mediterraneo alla Scandinavia, dall’Irlanda alle pianure della Polonia. Lo fecero attraverso la croce (la legge di Cristo), attraverso la preghiera liturgica e rituale, che cementò l’unità spirituale dell’Europa, col libro (ossia la cultura) e con l’aratro (la fatica e la coltivazione dei campi), riuscendo a trasformare terre deserte in campi fertilissimi (emblematico l’esempio offerto dalle "marcite" di Norcia, prati perennemente irrigui grazie all’o-

pera di canalizzazione apportata dai monaci benedettini nel V secolo).

Dopo che Norcia fu saccheggiata dai Goti, dai Longobardi e dai Saraceni, la ripresa del commercio fu lenta ma progressiva, fino a quando, nel 1200, Norcia, ormai sviluppata, si costituì libero Comune.

Il secolo che seguì, il 1300, rappresentò la fase di consolidamento del Comune. Norcia divenne il più importante Comune dei Monti Sibillini.

Nel 1400 il Comune guelfo di Norcia fu spesso in lotta con i castelli circostanti e, per acquisire maggiore autonomia politica, ebbe lunghi ed accesi contrasti con i legati pontifici di Spoleto. Nel 1484, infine, passò direttamente sotto la Legazione Pontificia di Perugia. Nel 1500 il commissario papale prese il po-

sto del podestà.

Nel 1569 venne istituita a Norcia, per volere del Papa Pio V, la sede della Prefettura della Montagna, sotto la quale dipendevano i Comuni di un vasto territorio.

Il 1600 conobbe un notevole rinnovamento edilizio ed artistico. Il 1700 viene ricordato unicamente per i due terremoti che cancellarono di colpo quanto era stato costituito dopo il 1328.

Dopo l’Unità d’Italia, Norcia si arricchì di pregevoli opere pubbliche, quali porta Romana, il corso, il monumento a S. Benedetto, il teatro civico, la scalinata e il prospetto del teatro comunale, il campanile di S. Maria, il mattatoio, un nuovo acquedotto e strade carrozzabili, come quella per Ascoli.

History Formerly called "Nursia", Norcia is located in the heart of the Valnerina, in the plain of St. Scholastica, in the center of an area rich in archaeological evidence that confirm the presence of man since the Middle Paleolithic. Sabine was an important strategic center which drew its name from "Northia" god pledge of fortune, worshiped by the Etruscans.

In 268 BC, Norcia became first Prefecture and then comune of Rome. Its fame in this period is related to the products of the country, the harshness of the climate (which earned her the epithet of Virgil "frigid"), and that of its most illustrious sons, with the republican general Sertorius in the first row and the mother Emperor Vespasian, Vespasian Polla.

In the fourth century it was the seat of

the diocese while in Norcia in 480 the twins Saint Benedict and Scholastica were born. At the fall of the Roman Empire, while some parts of Europe seemed to fall into darkness, and others were still devoid of civilization and spiritual values, St. Benedict and his monks brought the Christian project to all the populations spread from the Mediterranean to Scandinavia, from Ireland to the plains of Poland. They did this through the cross (the law of Christ), through prayer and liturgical ritual, which cemented the spiritual unity of Europe, with the book (ie culture) and the plow (fatigue and the cultivation of the fields), managing to turn wastelands into fertile fields (illustrated by the example offered by the "rotten "Norcia, perennially irrigated fields thanks

In 1400 the Guelph Municipality of Norcia was often at war with the surrounding castles, and to gain greater political autonomy, had long and heated arguments with the papal legates of Spoleto. In 1484, it finally passed directly under the Papal Legation of Perugia. In 1500 the papal commissioner took the place of the mayor.

In 1569 for the will of Pope Pius V the seat of the Prefecture of the Mountain was established, of which were dependent the towns of a vast territory.

1600 experienced a remarkable building and artistic renewal. 1700 is remembered only for the two earthquakes that suddenly cancelled what had been constituted after 1328.

After the Unification of Italy, Norcia was enriched with valuable public works, such as Porta Romana, the main street, the monument to St. Benedict, the Civic Theatre, the staircase and the prospect of the municipal theater, the bell tower of St. Mary, the slaughterhouse, a new aqueduct and driveways, such as the one for Ascoli.

Percorsi artistici Circondata da un anfiteatro naturale di monti di ineguagliabile bellezza, Norcia si presenta al visitatore tutta raccolta nella cerchia delle mura dalla caratteristica forma a cuore. I due ingressi principali sono Porta Romana, collegata alla Piazza principale dal corso ottocentesco, e Porta Massari. Articolato in otto rioni (guaite), con piccole piazze provviste di fontane, punteggiato di orti e giardini interni e percorso da un fitto reticolo dai viuzze, il tessuto edilizio acquista tono nei paraggi della piazza.

Proprio sulla piazza principale si affacciano i più importanti ed antichi edifici storici della città di Norcia. Intorno alla statua dedicata al Santo Patrono (commissionata a Francesco Prinzi in occasione del XIV centenario della nascita di S. Benedetto), fanno da corni-

ce: la Castellina (residenza del prefetto della Montagna, costruita su disegno del Vignola nel sec. XVI, oggi sede del Museo Civico e Diocesano, con opere a partire dal XIII sec.), il Palazzo Comunale (con loggiato inferiore del sec.

XIV e prospetto superiore rinnovato nel sec. XIX), la Basilica di S. Benedetto (eretta su vestigia romane, con facciata gotica del sec. XIV) nella cui cripta sono conservati i resti di un antico edificio romano identificato dalla tradizione con la casa paterna dei Santi gemelli Benedetto e Scolastica, ed il Portico delle Misure, costruite intorno alla metà del 1500 come mercato al coperto dei cereali. Leggermente defilata rispetto alla piazza è la Concattedrale di Santa Maria Argentea (del XVI sec).

A pochissima distanza dalla piazza

principale, in piazza Sergio Forti si trovano il Palazzo Cavalieri di Malta e la Chiesa della Madonna Addolorata. Da qui, proseguendo verso "Capolaterra", il quartiere più elevato della città, si arriva alla Chiesa di S. Agostino, gotica, con un affresco del 1368 sulla facciata.

L’interno, rifatto nel XVII sec., conserva degli interessanti affreschi dal XIV al XVI secolo. Proseguendo fin quasi in cima a Capolaterra, ci si imbatte nell’Oratorio di S. Agostinuccio. Il suo soffitto ligneo, intagliato, dorato e dipinto è un capolavoro di artigiani artisti locali del XVI secolo. Notevoli anche gli stalli e le statue dei santi patroni. In Via Umberto I si trova un singolare edificio, il cosiddetto Tempietto o Edicola, costruito nel 1354. Nella vicina Chiesa di S. Giovanni, una delle più antiche della

città, ristrutturata nel XVIII secolo, è possibile ammirare un prezioso altare finemente scolpito e decorato (1469) che incornicia l’immagine miracolosa della "Madonna della Palla", opera di Giovanni Dalmata. Incrociando Via Sertorio e prendendo Via Dante, si arriva al Complesso monumentale di S. Francesco, oggi sede dell’auditorium, dove è conservata la famosa tela dell’ "Incoronazione della Vergine" di Jacopo Siculo", della biblioteca e dell’archivio comunale. In quest’ultimo è conservato un ricco e cospicuo patrimonio documentale che racconta di un passato glorioso e rigoglioso.

Artistic itineraries Surrounded by a natural amphitheater of mountains of unparalleled beauty, Norcia presents itself to visitors all gathered in the city walls with the characteristic shape of a heart. The two main entrances are Porta Romana, which is connected to the main square of the nineteenth century, and Porta Massari. Divided into eight districts (guaite), with small squares equipped with fountains, dotted with small gardens and interior gardens and a path from a dense network of narrow streets, the building fabric acquires tone around the square.

Right on the main square overlook the most important and ancient buildings of the city of Norcia. Around the statue dedicated to the patron saint (Francis Prinzi commissioned on the occasion

of the fourteenth centenary of the birth of St. Benedict), a frame is formed by: Castellina (residence of the prefect of the Mountain, built with a design

by Vignola in sec. XVI, now home of the Civic and Diocesan Museum, with works from the thirteenth century), the Town Hall (with lower arcade of the fourteenth century and superior facade renovated in the XIX cent.), the Basilica of St. Benedict (built on Roman ruins, with Gothic facade of the century.

XIV) in whose crypt are the remains of an ancient Roman building identified by tradition with the family home of the twins Saints Benedict and Scholastica, and the Portico of the Measures, built around the mid 1500’s as a covered market for cereals. Slightly secluded from the square is the Cathedral of San-

ta Maria Argentea (sixteenth century).

A short distance from the main square, in the square Sergio Forti you can find the Palace Knights of Malta and the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows. From here, continuing towards "Capolaterra", the highest quarter of the city, stands the church of St. Augustine, Gothic, with a fresco of 1368 on the facade.

The interior was rebuilt in the seventeenth century and preserves some interesting frescoes from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. Continuing almost to the top of Capolaterra, you will come across the Oratory of St. Agostinuccio.

Its wooden ceiling, carved, gilded and painted is a masterpiece of local artists, artisans of the sixteenth century.

Noteworthy also are the seats and statues of patron saints. In Via Umberto I

there is a unique building, the so-called Temple or Kiosk, built in 1354. In nearby St. John’s Church, one of the oldest in the city, renovated in the eighteenth century, you can admire a precious altar finely carved and decorated (1469) that frames the miraculous image of "Our Lady of the Ball" by Giovanni Dalmata.

Crossing Sertorius Street and taking Via Dante, you get to the monumental complex of San Francesco, which today houses the auditorium, you can find the famous painting of "Coronation of the Virgin" by Jacopo Siculo, the library and the municipal archives. In the latter there is preserved a rich heritage and remarkable documentary that tells the story of a glorious and luxurient past..

Norcia

Eventi Manifestazioni culturali, folkloristiche, fieristiche, musicali e sportive a Norcia hanno luogo durante l’intero arco dell’anno. Il primo importante evento, che fa seguito alle iniziative più tradizionali di inizio anno, come le "pasquarelle" e la festa di Sant’Antonio Abate (con la benedizione degli animali), è quello dell’ultimo e penultimo fine settimana di febbraio: Nero Norcia, la "Mostra Mercato Nazionale del tartufo nero pregiato di Norcia e dei prodotti tipici", dagli anni ’50 prestigiosa rassegna agro-alimentare finalizzata a valorizzare il meglio delle produzioni tipiche locali e nazionali.

Dalla Mostra Mercato del tartufo alle Celebrazioni Benedettine del 20 e 21 marzo il passo è breve. Una delle iniziative più significative delle Celebra-

zioni è rappresentata dal viaggio nelle diverse capitali europee (e non solo) della "Fiaccola Benedettina Pro Pace et Europa Una". Nata nel 1988, ogni anno scortata da giovani tedofori lungo le strade d’Italia e d’Europa, la Fiaccola vuole essere ogni anno messaggera di pace e di fratellanza, ricordando a tutti l’ininterrotta missione di fede e di umana promozione suggerita da S. Benedetto. Dato l’alto valore spirituale della manifestazione, la Fiaccola è stata più volte benedetta dal Santo Padre.

Altro suggestivo momento delle solenni Celebrazioni è rappresentato dalla sfilata del Corteo Storico, il 21 marzo, con la partecipazione di figuranti in meravigliosi costumi d’epoca, in rappresentanza delle sei guaite della città (gli attuali rioni), e dei Castelli (le fra-

zioni), e il torneo della Balestra antica, una competizione tra i balestrieri delle sei Guaite.

Proseguendo nel calendario degli appuntamenti, che da gennaio a maggio annovera anche la Stagione Teatrale (con appuntamenti di prosa, teatro dialettale e altro ancora), si arriva ad una delle iniziative più suggestive e sentite dalla popolazione: il "Venerdì Santo", con la processione del "Cristo Morto" intorno alle mura castellane, attraverso scenografici quadri viventi delle quattordici stazioni della Via Crucis.

Il mese di Maggio viene invece celebrato con feste e cerimonie che risalgono a tempi remotissimi. La più diffusa è quella del "Piantamaggio", una tradizione molto sentita soprattutto nella Valle Castoriana e a Castelluccio. Pro-

prio quest’ultimo centro abitato è meta di migliaia di turisti tra giugno e luglio, periodo dell’anno in cui si può ammirare la "Fioritura", lo spettacolare evento naturale che rende multicolori gli sterminati piani ai piedi della piccola frazione. Con l’arrivo della bella stagione, a cadenza giornaliera cominciano ad avvicendarsi iniziative di carattere ricreativo e culturale. Il cartellone "Eventi d’estate a Norcia e dintorni" ne ha per tutti: spettacoli, corsi musicali internazionali, sagre, mostre, tornei, trofei, rievocazioni storiche…

A dicembre torna la tradizione con i "Faoni" o festa delle campane, enormi falò accesi la sera del 9 dicembre, per ricordare la traslazione della casetta della Madonna da Nazaret a Loreto ed illuminare la strada degli Angeli.

Events Cultural and folk events, exhibitions, musical and sporting activities in Norcia take place during the whole year.

The first important event, which follows the more traditional initiatives of the beginning of the year, such as "Pasquarelle" and the feast of St. Anthony Abbot (with the blessing of the animals), is one of the last and penultimate weekends of February: Black Norcia, the "national Exhibition of black truffle from Norcia and local products", from the 50ies prestigious exhibition agribusiness aims to exploit the best of localand national production..

From Truffle Market Exhibition to the BenedictineCelebration of 20 and 21 March, the distance is short. One of the most significant celebrations is the journey in the various capitals of

Europe (and not only) of "the Benedictine Torch Pro Pace andEurope One".

Founded in 1988, annually escorted by young torchbearers along the roads of Italy and Europe, the Torch wants to be every year a messenger of peace and brotherhood, reminding everyone of the continued mission of faith and human promotion suggested by S. Benedict. Given the high spiritual value of the event, the Torch has been repeatedly blessed by the Holy Father.

Another interesting moment of the solemn celebrations is the Historical Parade, March 21, with the participation of people in wonderful costumes, representing the six guaite of the city (the current districts), and Castelli (fractions), and the ancient crossbow tournament, a competition between

the crossbowmen of the six Guaite.

Continuing in the calendar of events, from January to May that also includes the theatrical season (with appointments of prose, dialect theater, and more), we arrive at one of the most striking initiatives perceived by the population the "Good Friday", with the procession of the "Dead Christ" around the castle walls, through spectacular tableaux of the fourteen stations of the Cross. The month of May is instead is celebrated with festivals and ceremonies that date back to ancient times.

The most common is the "Piantamaggio", a tradition deeply felt especially in the Valley and Castoriana Castelluccio.

The program "Summer Events in Norcia and surroundings" has something for everyone: shows, international music courses, festivals, exhibitions, tournaments, trophies, pageants,... Â In December, the tradition is back with "Faoni" or festival of the bells, huge bonfires in the evening of 9 December, to commemorate the transfer of the house of the Virgin Mary from Nazareth to Loreto and light the way of the Angels.

atro e all’area archeologica del piano di Santa Scolastica (loc. Opaco), si segnalano, nel centro urbano, le Chiese di S. Benedetto, S. Maria, S. Francesco, S. Agostino e l’edicola trecentesca del Tempietto.

Per chi è appassionato di sport e natura non ci sono proprio limiti. Norcia è sede di ritiro estivo per società sportive di massimo livello: di calcio, scherma, pallavolo, basket, …

I numerosi sentieri escursionistici del Parco nazionale dei Monti Sibillini, oltre al trekking, offrono la possibilità di passeggiate in mountain bike o a cavallo, sport che permettono di scoprire luoghi e prospettive nuove ed insolite.

I vellutati piani di Castelluccio, a poco meno di 28 Km dalla città, sono stati definiti la migliore scuola di volo libero

d’Europa ed un’ottima palestra per le specialità sciistiche.

Nel Comune di Norcia si trova inoltre l’unico centro in Umbria di sport invernali, ossia la stazione sciistica di Forca Canapine, celebre località turistica, anche questa situata nel cuore dei Sibillini.

Ed infine, altri sport minori, come la pesca sportiva ed il canottaggio, quest’ultimo meglio conosciuto con il nome di rafting, praticato con partenza dallo stretto di Biselli, sul fiume Corno, a soli dieci minuti da Norcia. Tale sport trova qui il suo ambiente ideale: natura amena con fiumi navigabili tutto l’anno grazie alle particolari caratteristiche morfologiche e assenza di traffico inquinante e rumoroso. Tra le altre attività si annoverano il tiro con l’arco e,

per i più coraggiosi e spericolati, anche il survival.

Alla già ricca offerta turistica si aggiunge quella gastronomica che conosce pochi rivali in Italia e nel mondo, con prodotti unici e prelibati quali il tartufo nero pregiato o le lenticchie di Castelluccio cui si affiancano i prodotti della "norcineria", l’arte di lavorare la carne di maiale, svariate qualità di formaggio, tra cui pecorino e ricotta salata, il farro, il miele…

Insomma, Norcia è una città gradevole da vivere in più di un’occasione e in più di una stagione e, per chi non la conosce, tutta da scoprire ed apprezzare in più di una giornata e in più di un soggiorno.

Activities There are many resources, from culture, art, to the environment, from cuisine to popular traditions, all united in a perfect and harmonious synthesis, that make Norcia a multiform city particularly attractive in the eyes of every visitor.

As a small capital of the mountain, it defends an important and promising tourist destination. In the long list of "types of tourism" everyone can find what conforms more closely to their needs.

Being able to take advantage of public and private accommodation of an excellent standard, there is something for all tastes and for all palates, even with degrees of difficulty proportionate to the widest consumers. For those who love archeology, culture and art, in addition to local Museums, Library, Archives and theater and the archaeo-

logical area of the floor of St. Scholastica (loc. Matte), there are, in the city center, the churches of St. Benedict, S. Mary, St. Francis, St. Augustine and the shrine of the fourteenth-century.

For those who are fond of sport and nature, there are no limits. Norcia is the home for a summer retreat for top-level company sports: football, fencing, volleyball, basketball...

The many hiking trails in the National Park of Monti Sibillini, in addition to hiking, offer the possibility of mountain biking or horseback riding, sports that allow you to discover new and unusual places and perspectives. The velvety plains of Castelluccio, a little less than 28 km from the city, have been defined the best free flight school in Europe and a great gym for skiing specialities.

In the town of Norcia there is also the only town in Umbria for winter sports, namely the ski resort of Forca Canapine, famous tourist resort, also this one located in the heart of the Sibillini.

And finally, other minor sports, such as fishing and boating, the latter better known by the name of rafting, practiced starting from the Strait of Bevels, the Horn River, just ten minutes from Norcia. This sport finds here its ideal environment : nature with pleasant navigable rivers all year round thanks to the particular morphological features and the absence of traffic pollution and noise. Other activities include archery and, for the brave and daring, even survival.

To the already rich tourist offer we can add the gastronamic one which has few rivals in Italy and in the world, with

unique and delicious products such as black truffle or Castelluccio lentils which are flanked by the products of the “ butchery “, the art of working the pork, a variety of cheese, such as pecorino and riccotta salata,spelt, honey...

In short, Norcia is a pleasant city to live in more than in one occasion and in more than one season, and for those who do not know it, it is to be discovered and appreciated in more than one day and more than one stay.

Subiaco

Storia Popolata dagli Equi e dai Latini, la zona divenne una meta di villeggiatura assai frequentata dai Romani, come testimoniano i resti della Villa Imperiale fatta costruire da Nerone attorno alla metà del I secolo.

Il suo nome latino sub lacum o sub laqueum è strettamente legato alla figura di Nerone perché trae origine dai laghi artificiali che l’imperatore romano volle creare attraverso una diga di sbarramento sul fiume Aniene, per abbellire la grande villa della quale ancora oggi è possibile ammirare alcuni resti.

Sul finire del V secolo d.C. Benedetto da Norcia, ripudiando la dissolutezza e l’ozio che imperavano a Roma dove si era recato per studiare, si ritirò in una spelonca del Monte Taleo per tre anni.

Conclusa l’esperienza eremitica, Bene-

detto fece costruire nei dintorni del fiume Aniene dodici monasteri e una casa madre, ciascuno popolato da dodici monaci e da un proprio abate, tutti sotto la sua guida spirituale.

Con il passare del tempo i monasteri vennero abbandonati e in parte distrutti, fatta eccezione per quello di Santa Scolastica, che ha acquisito il primato di essere il primo monastero benedettino al mondo. Dalla fine del XII secolo, per custodire la sacra grotta che accolse Benedetto durante la sua esperienza eremitica, venne costruito il monastero di San Benedetto, noto anche come Sacro Speco.

La storia di Subiaco è indissolubilmente legata a quella della stampa: fu proprio nei locali del monastero di Santa Scolastica che nel 1465 Konrad

Sweynheym e Arnold Pannartz impiantarono la prima tipografia in Italia. I due tipografi tedeschi allievi di Gutenberg fusero un nuovo carattere e tra il 1465 e il 1467 stamparono i primi libri: Donatus pro puerulis, grammatica latina del Donato; De Oratore di Cicerone, De Divinis institutionibus, De ira Dei e De opificio hominis di Lattanzio, De Civitate Dei di S. Agostino. Da allora Subiaco ebbe il vanto e il merito di essere denominata culla della stampa in Italia.

Con il passaggio del feudo sotto il dominio dei Colonna il borgo medievale andò via via fortificandosi e la Rocca Abbaziale divenne il centro del potere amministrativo. Il territorio di Subiaco fu poi governato dalla famiglia Borghese, dai Borgia e dai Barberini. In se-

guito al crollo dello Stato Pontificio la cittadina fu annessa al Regno d’Italia.

Nel XX secolo gli eventi bellici della II guerra mondiale provocarono gravi danni alla città distruggendo quasi per intero il centro storico e danneggiando gravemente chiese e monumenti. Al termine del conflitto tutto fu faticosamente ricostruito e restaurato, tornando ad essere così polo d’attrazione per il turismo religioso, ambientale, culturale e sportivo.

Saint Benedict

History Populated by the Equi and Latins, the zone became a very popular holiday destination frequented by the Romans, evidenced by the ruins of the Villa Imperiale which Nerone had had built around the middle of the 1st Century.

Its Latin name sub lacum or sub laqueum is closely connected to the figure of Nerone because it takes its origin from the artificial lakes that the Roman Emperor wanted to create through a damn on the River Aniene to embelish the huge villa of which, even today it is possible to admire its ruins. At the end of the V century A.D. Benedict of Norcia, repudiating the dissoluteness and idleness that reigned in Rome where he had gone to study, retired in a cave on Mount Teleo for three years. When his hermit’s experience had finished Bene-

dict had had built all round the River Aniene twelve monastries and a mother house, each one populated by twelve monks and their own abbot, everyone under his spiritual guide.

As time went by the monastries became abbandoned and in part destroyed with the exception of that of St. Scholastica which has aquired the primate of being the first Benedictine monastry in the world. From the end of the X11 century to preserve the Sacred Grotto, that welcomed Benedict during his hermit›s experience, the monastry of St. Benedict was built, known also as the Sacred Speco.

The story of Subiaco is indissolubly connected with printing: it was on the premises of the monastry of St. Scholastica that in 1964 Konrad Sw-

eynheym and Arnold Pannartz set up the first typography in Italy. The two German typographers, students of Gutenburg merged a new character and between 1465 and1467 printed the first books. Donatus pro puerulis,Latin grammar of Donato.

De Oratore of Cicerone, De Divinis institutionibus, De ira Dei and De opificio hominis of Latanzio, De Civitate Dei of St. Agostino. From then on Subiaco had the praise and merit of being denominated cradle of the press in Italy.

With the passing of the feud, under the dominium of the Colonna, the medieval village began to fortify and the Rocca Abbaziale became the centre of administrive power. The territory of Subiaco was then governed by the Borghese family, by the Borgia and by the Bar-

berini. In consequence of the downfall of the Pontificial State the town was annexed to the reign of Italy.

In the XX century the enemy occupation of the Second World caused serious damage to the city destroying most of the historical centre and severely damaging churches and monuments.

At he end of the war everything was labourously rebuilt and restored and became once again the keypoint of attraction for different types of turism, religious, ambiental cultural and sportive.

Subiaco

Percorsi artistici Monastero di Santa Scolastica Il più antico monastero benedettino al mondo e culla della stampa in Italia.

La struttura si compone di tre chiostri: il chiostro cosmatesco (XIII secolo), il chiostro gotico (XIV secolo) e il chiostro rinascimentale (XVI-XVII secolo).

Di stile romanico è la grande torre campanaria, costruita tra il X e il XII secolo. La chiesa, in stile neoclassico, venne progettata da Giacomo Quarenghi nella seconda metà del 1700. All’interno del monastero si trova anche una biblioteca statale dove vengono custoditi manoscritti, pergamene e incunaboli, tra cui le prime stampe in Italia.

Monastero di San Benedetto Definito da Pertrarca "soglia del paradiso", venne costruito sul Monte Taleo a partire dalla fine del 1100 e si compone

di due chiese sovrapposte e da diverse cappelle, che ben si mimetizzano con la roccia viva circostante. All’interno del monastero è possibile ammirare gli affreschi di Scuola Senese (VIX secolo), affreschi del Magister Consulus (XII secolo), la celebre riproduzione di San Francesco d’Assisi, unico affresco al mondo realizzato quando il santo era ancora in vita e la suggestiva Grotta Santa, all’interno della quale si trova la statua di San Benedetto eseguita nel 1657 da Antonio Raggi, allievo del Bernini.

Convento e Ponte Medievale di San Francesco Il convento venne edificato attorno al 1327 su una chiesa preesistente donata a Francesco d’Assisi quando venne in visita al Sacro Speco. Sull’altare è pos-

sibile ammirare il bellissimo trittico in legno, eseguito da Antoniazzo Romano nel 1467 e raffigurante la Vergine col Bambino, San Francesco e Sant’Antonio da Padova. In una cappella si trovano anche pregevoli affreschi del Sodoma e una splendida Natività attribuita alla scuola del Pinturicchio. A poca distanza dal convento è possibile ammirare il ponte medievale di San Francesco costruito nel XIV secolo in blocchi di pietra locale chiamata cardellino.

Rocca Abbaziale e MACS La Rocca venne fondata nell’XI secolo dall’abate di Santa Scolastica Giovanni V per instaurare il dominio monastico sul borgo di Subiaco. Dal 1456 diventò residenza degli abati commendatari, tra i quali Rodrigo Borgia, eletto in seguito papa Alessandro VI, e Francesco Co-

lonna. A metà del 1700 l’abate Giovannangelo Braschi, divenuto poi papa Pio VI, restaurò la struttura. Oggi le sale del piano terra dell’edificio ospitando il MACS, Museo delle attività cartarie e della stampa. Ai piedi della Rocca è possibile visitare il centro storico, caratterizzato da un susseguirsi di vicoli, scalinate e scorci suggestivi. Di notevole interesse sono la Chiesa di San Pietro e Piazza Pietra Sprecata, entrambe di epoca medievale.

Artistic itineraries Monastery of St. Scholastica The oldest Benedictine monastery in the world and cradle of the press in Italy. The structure is composet of three cloisters, the cloister cosmatesco (X111 century), Gothic cloister (X1V) and the Renaissance cloister (XV1XV11) centuries). The large bell tower is n Romanesque style, built between the tenth and twelfth centuries. The church in neoclassic style, was designed

by Giacomo Quarenghi in the second half of1700. Inside the monastery there is also a state library where there are manuscripts, parchmants and incunabula, including the first prints in Italy.

Monastery of St. Benedict Defind by Petrarca"threshold of Paradise" it was built on Mount Teleo at the end of 1100 and is composed of

two superimposed churches and several chapels, which is well caumoflaged with the surrounding solid rock. Inside the monastery you can admire the frescoes of the Sienese school (V1X century) frescoes of the Magister Conulus (X11 century) the famous reproduction of St. Francis of Assisi, the only fresco in the world made when the Saint was still aliveand the suggestive Grotta Santa, inside of which can be found the statue of St. Benedict made in 1657 by Antonio Raggi, a pupil of Bernini.

Convent and medieval bridge of St. Francis The convent was built around 1327 on a pre-existing church donated to St. Francis of Assisi, when he came to visit the Sacro Speco. On the alter it is possible to admire the beautiful wooden

triptych, accomplished by Antoniazzo Romano in 1467 representing the Virgin and Child, St. Francis and St. Antony of Padova. In a chapel there are also valuable frescoes of Sodoma and a splendid Nativity attributed to the school of Pinturicchio. At a short distance from the convent it is possible to admire the medieval bridge of St. Francis, built in the X1V century in blocks of local stone called cardellino.

Rocca Abbaziale and MACS The castle was founded in the eleventh century by the abbot of Saint Scholastica Giovanni V to establish the monastery dominium over the village of Subiaco. From 1456 it became the residence of the commendatory Abbots, such as Rodrigo Borgia, later elected Pope Alexander the 6th, and Fran-

cesco Colonna. In mid 1700 the Abbot Giovannangelo Braschi, who became Pope Pius 6th, restored the structure.

Today the rooms of the ground floor host the MACS, museum of paper activities and printing. At the foot of the fortress you can visit the historical centre characterized by a succession of narrow streets, stairways, and charming views of particular interest. Of particular interest are the churches of St. Peter’s and Piazza Pietra Sprecata, both of the Middle Ages.

Eventi Marzo Benedettino Una serie di eventi che si susseguono per tutto il mese di marzo in onore di San Benedetto, patrono della città, e che culminano tra il 20 e il 22 marzo.

In questi giorni di grande festa e commozione Subiaco rivive la storia e le grandi opere realizzate da Benedetto nella sua terra: dal periodo trascorso in eremitaggio, alla fondazione dei tredici monasteri e alla creazione dell’ordine benedettino. Dall’omaggio delle autorità al Sacro Speco, durante il quale si invoca la protezione del santo sulla città, al corteo che accompagna la statua del patrono al centro della città fino all’arrivo della fiaccola benedettina "Pro Europa Una" proveniente da Norcia e Cassino che sancisce il profondo legame storico e religioso tra le terre di Benedetto.

L’inchinata Celebrazione religiosa molto suggestiva che vede l’incontro di due processioni recanti le immagini dell’Assunta e del Salvatore. Le due macchine, portate a spalla da gruppi di fedeli, vengono poste l’una di fronte all’altra mentre la popolazione si riunisce nella piazza, e inginocchiandosi invoca la misericordia. Questo momento di grande commozione, rappresentato il 14 e il 16 agosto, segna l’inizio e la fine del ferragosto sublacense.

Subiaco Musica Festival Una serie di spettacoli presentati durante l’estate, con un unico denominatore: la musica in tutte le sue sfaccettature. Il festival spazia dalla musica rock con i concerti del Rock and Blues Festival, alla musica classica, etnica e

jazz con gli appuntamenti di Piazzette in Musica, alla musica corale proposta dal Coro Polifonico "Città di Subiaco".

Uno spazio è dedicato anche alla musica popolare con gli eventi del Subiaco Folk Festival.

Rajche La festa delle tradizioni popolari per eccellenza. La parola dialettale rajche significa "radici" e indica le radici culturali della città che vengono riscoperte e diffuse attraverso sapori, balli, poesie e artigianato dei tempi passati. La festa si svolge nella prima settimana di settembre e si compone di una passeggiata gastronomica tra i vicoli del centro storico e di una mostra mercato della liuteria tradizionale.

Subiaco 2015 Per tutto il 2015, in occasione del

550° anniversario della stampa, saranno organizzati una serie di eventi ed iniziative culturali di importanza internazionale, che avranno come temi centrali la diffusione della stampa, la comunicazione e l’editoria. Attraverso esposizioni, concerti, convegni e percorsi didattici verranno riscoperte le grandi innovazioni che la stampa ha prodotto nella diffusione del sapere.

Fieramente il Libro La manifestazione, dedicata alla piccola e media editoria, si svolge nel mese di Giugno presso Rocca Abbaziale.

Caratterizzato da incontri, workshop ed esposizioni, è un appuntamento che si inserisce nelle numerose iniziative volte ad affermare Subiaco come “Città della Stampa”.

Events Benedectine March A series of events that go on all through the month of March in honour of St. Benedict, the patron saint of the city, and that reach a peak between the 20th and 22nd March. In these days of great celabration and emotion Subiaco relives the history and the major works of Benedict in his native land: the time spent in hermitage, the founding of the thirteen monastries and the establishment of the Benedictine order. From the homage of the authorities to the Sacro Speco, during which the protection of the holy city is invoked, to the procession which accompanies the statue of the patron saint of the city centre and then the arrival of the Benedictine torch. "A Pro Europe Una" from Norcia and Cassino which establishes the deep

historical and religious link between the lands of Benedict.

The Bow A very suggestive religious celebration that sees the meeting of two processions bearing the images of the Assumption and the Savior. The two machines carried on the shoulders by groups of faithful, are placed one in front of the other while the people gather in the square and kneeling down ask for mercy. This moment of great emotion remembered on the 14th and 16th August marks the beginning and the end of Subiaco August bank holiday.

Subiaco Musica Festival A series of shows presented during summer with only one dominator: music in all its types.The festival goes from rock music with concerts of rock

and blues festival to classical music, etnic and jazz with the appointments of "Piazzette in Musica, to coral music proposed by the Polyphonic Choir "City of Subiaco". A space is also dedicated to popular music with the events of Subiaco Folk Festival.

Rajche The festival of folk traditions for excellence. The dialect word of rajche means "root" and indicated the cultural roots of the city that are rediscovered and diffused through flavours, dances, poems and crafts of olden times. The festival is held in the first week of September and consists of a gourmet walk through the narrow streets of the historical centre and a market of stringed-instruments.

Subiaco 2015 Throughout 2015, in occasion of the

550th anniversary of the press a series of events and cultural activities will be organized of international importance, which will have as a central theme the spreading of printing, communication and publishing. Through exhibitions, concerts, conferences, and educational courses we will discover the great innovations that the press has produced in the diffusion of knowledge.

Fieramente il Libro It is a cultural event about publishing and it takes place in june in the medieval fortress. This event, composed of workshops, exhibitions and meetings, is one of the initiatives proposed to confirm Subiaco as "The City of Printing".

Attività Famosa per essere la culla del monachesimo benedettino e della stampa in Italia, Subiaco è senza dubbio uno scrigno di storia e cultura.

Numerose sono infatti le attività legate alla divulgazione del monachesimo benedettino e del patrimonio artistico locale, attraverso visite guidate ai monasteri benedettini, visite guidate alla Rocca Abbaziale, al MACS Museo delle Attività Cartarie e della Stampa e al museo-laboratorio Borgo dei Cartai dove è possibile riscoprire la fabbricazione della carta con le tecniche del 1700.

Subiaco è però anche una meta apprezzata dagli amanti dello sport. Dal rafting allo sci, la città offre a tutti

coloro che amano le attività all’aria aperta molteplici possibilità in tutte le stagioni. Subiaco infatti è compreso nel Parco Naturale Regionale dei Monti Simbruini, che si estende per quasi 30,000 ettari, e che offre più di 40 sentieri di diverse difficoltà, percorribili a piedi e a cavallo, dove è possibile entrare in contatto con la realtà faunistica del territorio, ammirare verdi vallate, vaste foreste di faggio e panorami splendidi. In questo contesto incontaminato oltre all’escursionismo è possibile praticare arrampicata sportiva, orienteering, nordic walking, speleologia, mountain bike e downhill. Sul fiume Aniene, caratterizzato da acque limpide e suggestivi scenari, vengono

praticati stagionalmente kayak, canoa, rafting e pesca.

La città è inoltre un’ottima meta anche per gli sport invernali. A soli 15 minuti dalla città, a Monte Livata, è possibile praticare diverse attività sulla neve. In località Campo dell’Osso si trova una bellissima pista da fondo che è spesso teatro di importanti manifestazioni nazionali ed internazionali. Vari percorsi dai 3 km ai 7 km permettono di esplorare gli angoli più belli dei Simbruini.

Per quanto riguarda lo sci alpino e lo snowboard, presso Campo dell’Osso è presente un tapis roulant per bambini e dilettanti che vogliono imparare questi sport in sicurezza, mentre a Monna dell’Orso una seggiovia quadriposto

lunga 750 metri circa serve 6 piste di varia difficoltà con lunghezze da 900 a 1500 metri.

Caratterizzata da un ambiente sicuro e familiare questa zona si adatta perfettamente a famiglie e bambini. Per gli amanti del freestyle la stazione sciistica dispone anche di un’area snow park, con diverse linee dalle più facili alle più impegnative. Per chi pratica escursionismo invernale, la zona offre interessanti itinerari da fare con ciaspole e sci alpinismo.

There are numerous activities related to the dissemination of Benedictine monasticism and the local artistic heritage through guided tours of the Benedictine monastries, guided tours to Rocca Abbaziale, the MACS Museum of printing and Paper Business and of the museumworkshop Borgo dei Cartai where you can rediscover the manufacture of paper with the techniques of 1700.

Subiaco, however, is also a popular destination for lovers of sport. From rafting to skiing, the city offers to all those who enjoy outdoor activities many

possibilities in all season.

Subiaco is in fact included in the Regional Natural Park of Simbruini, which covers nearly 30,000 acres, and offers more that 40 trails of various difficulty, that may be covered on foot and on horseback, where it is possible to come in contact with the reality of the fauna of the area, admire the green valleys, vast forests of beech trees and beautiful views.

In this uncontaminated context in addition to hiking, it is possible to practice rock climbing, orienteering, nordic walking, speleology mountain biking and downhill. On the river Aniene, characterized by clear waters and beautiful scenary you can practice, kayaking, ca-

noeing, rafting and fishing.

The city,however,is also a destination for winter sports. Just 15 minutes away from the City, at Monte Livata, you can enjoy various activities in the snow.In Campo dell’Osso there is a beautiful country track that is often the scene of important national and international events. Various routes from 3 km. to 7 km. allow you to explore the most beautiful corners of Simbruini. As for Alpine skiing and snowboarding, at Campo dell’ Osso there is a tapis roulant for children and amateurs who want to learn these sports safely, while at Monna dell’Orso there is four place chair-lift 750 metres long that serves 6 runs of various difficulty with lengths

from 900 to 1500 metres. As it is a safe and familiar environment it is perfectly suitable for families and children. For lovers of freestyle the ski resort has also a snow park, with different lines from the easiest to the most difficult.

For those who practice winter hiking, the zone offers interesting itineries to do, such as snowshoeing and crosscountry skiing.

Cassino

Storia Cassino è città antichissima: sono stati rinvenuti reperti che attestano la presenza umana risalenti al Neolitico. In epoca romana viene chiamata Casinum;a causa delle vicende medioevali, non mantenne sempre lo stesso nome: divenne prima Castellum Sancti Petri, poi Eulogimenopoli, ovvero “Città di San Benedetto”, infine San Germano, dalla presenza nella chiesa di S.Germano di reliquie del Santo Vescovo di Capua, venerato dai fedeli. Con l’Unità d’Italia e con atto del 1863, la città prese il nome definitivo di Cassino. La Seconda Guerra Mondiale fu fatale per Cassino e Montecassino.

La città, infatti, era uno dei capisaldi della linea Gustav, la linea difensiva tedesca per impedire l’avanzare

degli alleati. Quando l’VIII armata britannica e la V armata americana si unirono presso Cassino sferrarono un attacco violentissimo. Le battaglie per Cassino ebbero inizio nel novembre 1943 e terminarono nel maggio 1944anche grazie all’intervento di truppe francesi.

La città, come l’Abbazia, fu distrutta dai bombardamenti, per tali ragioni fu definita Città Martire e decorata con medaglia d’oro al valore militare. Il 15 marzo del 1945 il Capo del Governo, Ivanoe Bonomi alla presenza del sindaco Gaetano Di Biasio consacrò la rinascita di Cassino. Lo stesso giorno fu posta la prima pietra per la ricostruzione del Monastero di Montecassino (la Basilica fu poi consacrata da Papa Paolo VI il 24 ottobre 1964).

La storia di Cassino è indissolubilmente collegata a quella di Montecassino, il cui monte era in origine l’acropoli della città ed ospitava un tempio dedicato ad Apollo. Montecassino deve la sua fondazione a San Benedetto, intorno all’anno 529. Distruttadai longobardi, il primo monastero risorse intorno al 720. L’abbazia occupò una posizione primaria nell’ordine e nella Chiesa fino al 1349, allorché fu gravemente danneggiata da un terremoto che aprì un lungo periodo di decadenza. Ricostruita dal secolo XVI al secolo XVIII, accolse nel suo ultimo aspetto caratteri del tardo Rinascimento ma nel prosieguo dei lavori si configurò come monumento architettonico dell’età barocca.

Dopo la totale distruzione del 15 feb-

braio 1944, bombardata dagli angloamericani erroneamente convinti che il monastero fosse stato trasformato in un caposaldo tedesco, una complessa opera di riedificazione ha ridato all’abbazia l’aspetto originario. Nel 1950, durante i lavori, sono state ritrovate le reliquie di San Benedetto e di Santa Scolastica, ora sistemate nell’altare maggiore.

History Cassino is a very ancient city. Artifacts have been found that attest to human presence dating back to the Neolithic Age. The city, in the Roman times was called Casium. Due to events of the Middle Ages, it didn’t always keep the same name: it was first called Castellum Sancti Petri; then Eulogimenopoli, that is “City of St. Benedict” finally San Germano originated by the presence in the church of San Germano, relics of the Holy Bishop of Capua, venerated by the faithful. With the unification of Italy and by an act of 1853, the city took its final name of Cassino, the Roman “Casinum”.

The Second World War was fatal to Cassino and Montecassino.

The city, infact, was one of the strongholds of the Gustav Line, the German

defensive line to prevent the advance of the Allies. When the British V111th Army joined the American Vth Army they launched a violent attach. The battles of Cassino began in November, 1943 and ended in May 1944 with the intervention of French troops. Cassino and Montecassino were almost completely destroyed by bombing of the Second World War. For this reason it was called City Martyr and honoured with a gold medalfor military valor.

On the 15th March 1945,the head of the government Ivanoe Bonomi in the presence of Gaetano Di Blasio consecrated the rebirth of Cassino. On the same day, the foundation stone was laid for the reconstruction of the Monastry of Montecassino (the Basilica was consecrated by Pope Paul V1 on

24th October, 1964).

The story of Cassino is inextricably linked to that of Montecassino, which was originally the city's acropolis.

Apollo was the most worshiped divinity whose temple was placed on the Mount. This complex stood where today is the Abbey. It owes its foundation to St. Benedict around 529. It was destroyed by the invasion of the Longobarda, the first monastery revived when the benedictines returned to Cassino from Rome, about 720.

The abbey occupied a primary position in the order and in the church up to 1349, then it was severely damaged by an earthquake that started a long period of decline. It was rebuilt from the sixteenth century to the eighteenth, its last appearance was that of

the character of late Renaissance but as further work went on it seemed like an architectural monument of the Baroque era.

After the total destruction which took place on 15th February, 1944 as a result of the Anglo-American bombing caused by a hasty decision of the comands, mistakenly convinced that the monastery was turned into a German stronghold, a complex work of rebuilding the abbey has given it its original appearance. In 1950, the relics of St. Benedict and Saint Scholastica were found and are now placed on the high alter.

Percorsi artistici Cassino offre al visitatore numerose testimonianze e monumenti del suo passato romano, in parte conservati nel Parco Archeologico “Casinum”, dove è stata messa in luce una parte della città romana con diversi edifici: Porta Campana, i cui resti sono visibili in un tratto delle mura. È ben conservata la soglia e sono visibili i segni dei cardini.

Anfiteatro La sua costruzione è attribuita alla matrona Ummidia Quadratilla, appartenente ad una potente famiglia locale, nella seconda metà del I sec. d.C.; due iscrizioni, ritrovate nel monumento stesso, menzionano l’opera ed il nome della matrona.

Necropoli ha fornito dati sulla fase protostorica,

i cui materiali sono esposti nel Museo Archeologico. Sono visibili due tombe monumentali di età romana.

Tomba di Ummidia Quadratilla monumento della fine del I sec. d.C., all’esterno delle mura, attribuito agli Ummidi. Ha pianta a croce coperta da cupola e contiene 3 nicchie per sarcofagi.

Teatro Di età augustea, si trova nell’area centrale della città, ha gradinate semicircolari in parte addossate alla collina.

Ninfeo “Ponari” Probabilmente parte di una domus aristocratica del I secolo a.C.. L’ambiente venne ridecorato nel II sec.d.C. con pitture che imitano un rivestimento marmoreo.

Museo archeologico nazionale Situato all’interno dell’Area Archeologica, conserva materiali provenienti da Cassino e dal suo territorio.Reperti, pertinenti a diverse epoche, sono esposti in tre sale.

Abbazia di Montecassino Famosa in tutto il mondo per la sua storia, rappresenta anche il fulcro del cristianesimo europeo. Meta di migliaia di pellegrini conserva le reliquie di San Benedetto. All’interno vi è una importante biblioteca, dotata di un ricchissimo patrimonio, frutto di un immenso lavoro culturale, oggi si conservano ancora oltre 1.000 codici, 40.000 pergamene e tutto il fondo delle opere a stampa con 250 incunaboli.La biblioteca è stata dichiarata monumento nazionale e in essa è conservato il primo

documento ufficiale del volgare nostrano, il “Placito Capuano” del 960. L’Abbazia accoglie al suo interno anche un Museo, che conserva numerose opere e reperti di grande pregio e valore, tra cui: manoscritti, libri, disegni e stampe; resti della Basilica, reperti etruschi e di arte romana; statuette lignee, vasi ellenici, etruschi e italici; pitture e sculture benedettine, ricami e merletti.

Artistic itineraries Thanks to its Roman Past, Cassino still retains a large number of monuments and places of archaeological interest to visit. In the archaeological park “Casium” a part of the Roman City with some of its buildings has been brought to light: Porta Campana: The remains of the door are visible in a section of the wall.

The threshold of the door is well preserved and signs of the hinges are visible, the identification was made thanks to an inscription that mentioned a construction of a road requested by local Questors in the first century A.D. Amphitheatre: Its constructions attributed to the matron Ummidia Quadratilla, belonging to a powerful local family, in the second half of the first century A.D. two inscriptions found in the monument

itself mention the name of Ummidia.

Necropolis: It has provided data on the proto-historic period, materials of which are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum. Two monumental tombs of the Roman period are, however, still visible today.

Grave of Ummidia Quadratilla: It is a monument of the end of the first century A.D., outside the walls. The design has the form of a cross covered by a dome and inside there are three niches for sarcophagi. By tradition the tomb is attributed to the family of the Ummidi.

Theatre: Built in the Augustan age, it is located in the centre area of the city, with semi-circular steps laid directly on the slope of the hill. The flight of steps are divided in two different sectors upper and lower, across a small corridor and in

four sections of three steps.

Ninfeo “Ponari”: probably art of a large-scale urban aristocratic domus of the first century B.C. The enviroment was redecorated in the second century A.D. painted with a coating that imitates marble slabs.

Natural Archaeological museum of Cassino: Situated within the Archaealogical Area, where material from Cassino and its territory are preserved; these findings are relevant to different ages and let the visitors follow up in the three rooms the long history and different places of settlement.

The Abbey of Montecassino: Famous in all the world for its history, it is also the hub of European Christianity.

It is the destination of thousands of pilgrims and in the Abbey the relics of St.

Benedict are preserved. Inside the Abbey there is an important library which has a rich heritage, the result of an immense cultural work, today there are over 1.000codes, 40,000 scrolls and all printed works with 250 incunabola. The library has been declared a national monument and falls within the category of public libraries where the first official document of our national vernacular, "Placito Capuano" of 960 is stored. Inside The Abbey there is a museum. In it are preserved many works and artifacts of great quality and value including manuscripts, books, drawings and prints; remains of the Basilica, Etruscan and Roman Art, wooden statuettes, Greek, Etruscan and Italic vases; Benedictine paintings and sculptures, embroidery and lace.

Pasqua epifania Una delle tradizioni più antiche della Città: in occasione dell’Epifania alcuni musicisti, vestiti nel tradizionale abito e con un caratteristico mantello, girano per Cassino annunciando con antiche e gioiose melodie la festa dell’Epifania.

Notte bianca della cultura Durante il mese di settembre Cassino dedica un’intera notte agli eventi artistici e culturali in tutta la città, con performance di altissimo livello e un clima festoso che coinvolge migliaia di persone.

Conflitti Un festival internazionale dedicato al racconto audiovisivo e giornalistico, nato dall’importanza di raccontare la guerra e le esperienze di coloro che hanno vissuto in diretta e sul campo i più importanti avvenimenti dello scenario politico-militare. Un festival che ha avuto immediato riscontro e successo, in una città che è simbolo delle sofferenze e della rinascita dovute alla guerra.

Settantesimo Anniversario della distruzione di Cassino e Montecassino Di notevole impegno istituzionale ed organizzativo sono le celebrazioni, che cadono in questo anno 2014, per i 70 anni dagli eventi bellici che videro Cassino e l’Abbazia al centro dell’attenzione mondiale. Non mancano occasioni ufficiali di grande rilevanza, quali le visite previste del Presidente della Repubblica Giorgio Napolitano, del presidente Polacco Komorowski e di delegazioni ufficiali da tutto il mondo, che giungeranno a Cassino per portare messaggi di pace e per ricordare le migliaia di giovani morti qui per la libertà, giunti da decine di nazioni diverse. A partire dal 15 febbraio, anniversario della distruzione dell’Abbazia, fino alle grandi celebrazioni di maggio (sfondamento

del fronte), si alterneranno cerimonie, celebrazioni, dibattiti culturali, incontri con scuole e persino flash mob per ricordare al mondo l’orrore di quanto avvenuto a Cassino Giro d’Italia Il 15 maggio 2014 per la prima volta un arrivo di tappa a Cassino nello spettacolare scenario di Montecassino ove vi sarà il traguardo. Un percorso suggestivo tra i più lunghi del giro d’Italia.

Seventieth anniversary of the destruction of Cassino and Montecassino Of considerable organizational and institutional commitment are the cel-

ebrations, which fall in this year 2014, 70 years after the events of the war that saw Cassino and the Abbey at the center of world attention. There is no shortage official occasions of great importance, such as the planned visits of the President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano, the Polish President Komorowski and official delegations from around the world who come to Cassino to bring messages of peace and to remember the thousands of young people who died here for freedom, come from dozens of different countries. Starting from February 15, the anniversary of the destruction of the Abbey, to the great celebrations of May (breakthrough of the front), will take turns ceremonies, celebrations, cultural debates, meetings with schools and

even a flash mob to remind the world the horror of what occurred in Cassino Tour of Italy May 15th 2014, for the first time an arrival of the tour of Italy stops at Cassino in the spectacular scenery of Montecassino where there will be the finish line. A picturesque path among the longest of the Tour of Italy. Cassino will welcome 174 different nations.

Attività Celebrazioni per San Benedetto Ogni anno a maggio si rinnova l’omaggio della Città a San Benedetto.

Solenni le celebrazioni che si tengono nell’arco di una settimana, mentre il tradizionale Corteo Storico vede centinaia di figuranti vestiti in abiti medioevali sfilare per le strade creando una suggestiva atmosfera che arricchisce l’aspetto simbolico della festa.

All’interno della Curia vengono allestiti i Mercatini di San Benedetto che fanno riscoprire usi e tradizioni del medioevo.

Fiaccola benedettina Puntuale l’appuntamento con la fiaccola che attraversa paesi e culture dell’Europa portando anche a Cassino (Città legatissima alla tradizione benedettina) il messaggio di pace e fratellanza proprio di San Benedetto e del

suo ordine monastico.

Madonna dell’Assunta La festa più attesa dai fedeli religiosi della città. Si svolge ad agosto e vede sempre grandi onori tributati alla Patrona della Città. Alle solenni celebrazioni liturgiche si affiancano eventi lungo le strade del centro cittadino.

Cerimonie di guerra Legatissima alla memoria del tempo di guerra, Cassino porge ogni anno il proprio omaggio a tutti quei soldati caduti sul suo suolo per la libertà del mondo oppresso dal nazifascismo. Il 20 gennaio si svolge la cerimonia sul Fiume Gari per ricordare i soldati della 36a divisione Texas. Il 15 febbraio e il 15 marzo sono gli anniversari dei due bombardamenti che distrussero rispettivamente l’Abbazia di Montecas-

sino e la Città, annientate dagli ordigni sganciati dagli aerei alleati. Nei giorni che precedono il 20 maggio le cerimonie rammentano le vittime neozelandesi, alleate e soprattutto polacche (furono le truppe che liberarono Montecassino e le colline vicine) culminando con la solenne cerimonia sul Gari che ricorda lo sfondamento del fronte e la fine delle sofferenze per il territorio e la popolazione. Anche fuori dalle date legate alle celebrazioni è possibile nel Museo Historiale rivivere e scoprire la memoria di quei terribili anni grazie a tecnologie ed esperienze multimediali di grande coinvolgimento.

Activities Celebrations for St. Benedict Every year in May the homage of the city of St. Bendedict is renewed. Solemn celebrations take place within a week, while the Historical Parade sees hundreds of characters dressed in medieval clothes parade through the streets creating an evocative atmosphere that enriches the symbolic aspect of the feast. Inside the Curia the Markets of Saint Benedict are set up and customs and traditions of the Middle Ages are discovered.

Benedectine Torch Punctual is the appointment with the torch that crosses countries and cultures of Europe bringing to Cassino (city very attached to the Benedictine tradition) the message of peace and brotherhood of St. Benedict and his

monastic order.

Our Lady of the Assumption The most awaited festival by religious believers of the city. It takes place in August and shows great honours bestowed to the patroness of the City.

The solemn liturgical celebrations go alongside with events along the streets of the sit centre.

Ceremonies of war Very attached to the memory of wartime, Cassino gives its tribute each year to all those fallen soldiers on its soil for the liberation of the world oppressed from fascism. On the 20th January, a ceremony takes place on the river Gari in rememberance of the soldiers of the 36th division Texas. The 15th February and the 15th March are the anniversaries of the two bombings

that destroyed respectively The Abbey of Montecassino and the City, destroyed by bombs dropped by allied planes. In the days preceeding the 20th May the ceremonies remember the victims of New Zealand, allied and especially the Polish (the troops who liberated Montecassino and the hills around) culminating with a solemn ceremony on Gari which remembers the breakthrough of the front and the end of suffering for the territory and the population. It is possible to relive and discover the memory of those terrible years at the Historiale Museum, thanks to technology and multimedia experience of great involvement.
