History of the Circuit In Sept 2000 I (Maria Smith) left my employment that I had spent the previous 15 years working for a PLC within the advertising dept of the local press. In that same year my husband Jeff, worked in the motor industry (I met Jeff when he was a tyre fitter and I was a single mother of two boys in 1983 and at the time, I worked for a Welfare to work and Lay Advocate company) We both felt, that since meeting in 1983 that we had worked very hard, to accomplish a roof over

Jeff Smith our heads, a stable lifestyle and nice holidays, yes it had taken us 13 years to accomplish this, but with the loyal support from both our families and child minder Cath, (Remember in the early 90’s there was no Tax Credit or child support income) we managed it. Even managing to keep family life together, while we worked, including trips to the gym for our boys (which Jeff had already adopted) scout outings, school trips, special holidays etc. In 1991 we had our third addition to our family, when our daughter Helen was born. We continued to work for PLC’s and climb the ladder of promotions.

The Circuit is a family owned newspaper covering Hartlepool, Wynyard, Greatham, and Seaton Carew. We also publish in East Cleveland, N.Yorks and the Teesside area, the next issue of the Circuit will be printed September 2011 with deadline being 2nd September 2011.

Maria Smith Well I tell you now, I became so disillusioned in the late 90’s that I thought. ‘Why not work for yourself Maria’. And, with the full support of Jeff I left my very well paid job and started my own business in the ‘Design for Print Sector.’ That was the start of the Circuit formulation, as when I spoke to local companies, many of them ‘teased’ me or encouraged’ me into creating a new printed media. Statements such as ‘Go on Maria give ‘them’ (referring to the regional press) a run for their money.’ “We would like some value for money”, “we would like to make some competition” “We would just like a change of media.” These statements still remain today, from the very people who made them in the first instance. That was the beginning of the Circuit, a demand for something fresh, different and a platform for local business to advertise in a cost effective way. In the year 2000, I did not have internet access. I had Chris Moore a local Graphic Artist, who remains with us today, over ten years on, creating the pages of the Circuit.

Our family business supports the people who are always there and our very valued advertisers, who, over the years have made every publication of the Circuit possible. In 2002, Jeff, unfortunately broke his neck in a car accident, which brought back the reality of how precious life is to our family. Jeff, over the previous years had climbed the ladder in the motor industry to become a senior Aftersales Manager for a motoring PLC decided that he would join the family business and make a difference, and he has done so ever since Oh and we won ‘Best New Community Business Award 2003.’ This was one of the biggest lifts for me personally, I still ‘brag about it today! (The award, not Jeff’s broken neck) Jeff, I am thankful to say, is able to walk, talk, run and enjoy life to the full, now in 2011 thanks to Mr Chrishna from NTH, after major surgery on Jeff’s his neck (which, he had a piece of his hip implanted into his neck, together with a few bolts). Not withstanding any other ‘normal life’ such as trying to keep a roof over our heads, food on the table and trying to keep our ‘extended adult family life’ - in one piece. We continued to produce the Circuit, ensuring its positive news. We are also very proud grandparents to four wonderful children. Another rewarding part of our family business, has been Daniel, our

second son, who left the RAF in 2005 and joined our family company, the Circuit. This was a huge step for him and his young family, and, he remained with the business for three years, but thanks to some prayers, good fortune and a great decision by Daniel, he is now serving back in RAF. As early in the spring of 2008, our business life, as most of us knew it, became a very different world, for SME (Small, medium enterprise), The business ‘world fell apart.’ Banks shut the doors on spending, government forgot about the small business sector, unreasonable demands were placed on SME’s such as: A reform of business status, employment law, additional VAT and major cuts in spending. We had to stop publishing the circuit Sept 2008 due to lack of advertising, the only stream of revenue supporting the publication, (we had managed to grow from a humble 4000 copies once per month to 72,000 each fortnight in Teesside and N Yorks) we down sized the business, had to make staff redundant and managed to release our previous offices in Thornaby and Guisborough, we almost lost our home, we had to sell our vehicles and we did lose our minds for a while, the pain of seeing all that we worked for almost disappear before us in a blink. Oh and the ‘so called ‘Business support sector’ believe me is non existent. This, I believe has been

due to the ‘hype’ of the National and Regional Press over the past few years. You see, the circuit is very different, we focus only on the positive news, we are A political and find all the good local news for our readers to enjoy, however, I know, I have to be straight forward with our valued readers, and not forget the really tough times, which, on occasion have been too difficult for me to cope with, and that’s where family and friends come in. Without them, we would never have managed to get through the past two years, so a very big thanks goes to my mother Molly, Jeff’s Uncle John, our children, family and all the people that helped make the re-launch of the Circuit happen in March 2010. A huge thanks also goes to every one of our advertisers, as it purely through their advertising revenue that ensures we can produce the Circuit. It has taken some time to recover from the ‘down turn’, which is a statement I do not like to refer too, however, I must recognise, register and agree that we never gave up our ideal, our idea, and our philosophy, that a positive newspaper is the way forward. I strongly believe that the people of Hartlepool do actually enjoy reading good news, so please let us know what you think of the Circuit. In areas where we don’t yet deliver a free copy, the Circuit can be purchased in newsagents or collected from a local library the second week of each month.

Green Flags are fluttering at two of Hartlepool’s green spaces after they succeeded in winning the prestigious award for the coming year. The Green Flag Awards recognise well-managed, high-quality green spaces, which are open for anyone to use and enjoy, with excellent facilities and the two accolades were Summerhill and Ward Jackson Park in Hartlepool. Green Flag Plus Partnership chairman Phil Barton said: “These parks and green spaces provide a “green lung” for people in towns and cities across the country, but they also provide essential locations for play, family interaction and “getting away from it all”. Councillor Hilary Thompson, the Council’s Culture, Leisure and Tourism Portfolio Holder, said: “I am delighted that both sites have retained their Green Flags and I would like to congratulate everyone who has contributed to this success. “Ward Jackson Park and Summerhill are quite different in that the former is very much a traditional park while the latter is an outdoor activity centre providing a range of activities. “But what they do have in common is that they are both wonderful green spaces with excellent facilities that attract thousands of visitors every year.” Ward Jackson Park, which was officially opened in 1883, was refurbished in 1999/2000 with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Its features include a large lake, a bandstand, an historic fountain, a modern children’s playground, a café, a large area of open

Centre. Tel: 01429 869706 Summerhill, formerly a network of farmers’ fields, is now a Local Nature Reserve and supports a wide range of wildlife and plants. There is a purpose-built visitors’ centre at its heart and key facilities include a BMX cycling track, a boulder park for climbing enthusiasts, a high ropes course and children’s play areas.

The two award-winning sites now have the chance to receive a further award from the Green Flag Plus Partnership, the People’s Choice Award. This award is voted for by the public, so if you want to see your local park receive a national accolade as the people’s choice, then visit the Green Flag Award website now to register your vote. With more people than ever having access to well managed, high-quality green spaces. Summerhill and Ward Jackson will fly the Green Flag Community Award, a sign that the value of green space is widely acknowledged as vital to our communities. Views asked on proposals for new community woodland People in Hartlepool have been asked to have their say on exciting proposals to create a major new community woodland for both wildlife and recreation on the outskirts of the town. Hartlepool Council is looking at the possibility of creating the 50 acre community woodland including open spaces and about 20 acres of trees - on an area of open land at Golden Flatts, to the south of Seaton Lane. If it goes ahead, it would be the first large-scale green space to be created in Hartlepool since Summerhill country park in the 1990s. The Council invited people to drop in to St Matthew’s Hall, Elwick Road, Owton Manor Community Centre, The Phoenix Centre and The Education Development Centre to give their views. It’s envisaged that the community woodland would be planted with trees common to British woods, including oak and hazel, and areas of the site would be landscaped and have paths. There would also be open grassed areas – some of which would be mown regularly and others, which would be left to grow longer as a haven for wildlife such as butterflies and birds. There would also be ponds and wildlife meadows. Other possible ideas could include play spaces for children and families, car parking and areas for grazing livestock. Chris Scaife, the Council’s Countryside Access Officer, said: “One of the main aims of the project would be to create a rich variety of different spaces – to encourage wildlife and for quiet enjoyment, recreation and education. “It also offers a host of exciting opportunities for people to get involved in developing and maintaining the area.” Councillor Hilary Thompson, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism, added: “This is a great chance to create something new and exciting for generations of all ages to enjoy. “First, however, we need to know whether there is public support for such a proposal, so I hope that as many people as possible will take part in the consultation and give us their views and suggestions.” The Council would apply to the Forestry Commission and other national agencies for funding for the project. If you missed last weeks consultation, details of the proposals can be found at the councils website or to make comments contact the Council’s Parks and Countryside Section on 01429 523350 or e-mail parksandcountryside@hartlepool.gov.uk

Councils ask ‘where should new homes go’ The four Borough Councils of Redcar and Cleveland, Middlesbrough, Stockton and Hartlepool are asking for residents’ views on where new housing should be built in the future. Some sites are already

earmarked for possible development up to 2021. However, an ever-growing population with changing needs means the Boroughs will require over 10,000 new homes between 2021 and 2028. New homes could be spread amongst several of

the identified sites or concentrated on a small number. On some sites, although they may be technically suitable, development may not be desirable. A simple consultation document outlines the possible sites, explains the

‘pros and cons’ at each and asks for comments on which are the most suitable. So Councils are asking for as many residents as possible to spend just a few minutes of their time to help shape the areas future.

PREPARE TO BE SHOCKED BY HOW GOOD STAGECOACH WORKSHOPS CAN BE It is wonderful how a group of young people aged 4-8yrs or 8-16yrs, who can be strangers to one another, can pull together in a week to create a piece of musical theatre that will amaze its audience, with its quality. Long-term friendships can be formed and self-esteem and confidence grow with those friendships, leaving a lasting benefit – for only a week’s commitment.

Alma and Sue - patient John Blackburn (front) with wife Barbara and staff on the renal unit at James Cook. John and his wife are from Stainton Lifelong friends Sue Barker and Alma Fox have proved they really are a dynamic duo - by raising more than £12,000 for kidney patients. The pair recently trekked more than 60 miles along the Great Wall of China as part of a series of fundraising events for South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Sue of Leyburn wanted

to do something to support the trust’s renal day unit because her 33year-old daughter has been diagnosed with kidney problems. She also lost her husband to kidney disease 27 years ago. While the pair are no strangers to taking on charity challenges, their latest expedition really put them through their paces.

The money raised will purchase two infusion pumps (drips) for the renal day unit and other vital equipment. Consultant in nephrology, Dr Jonathan Louden, said: “We’re all flabbergasted at the amount raised - it’s absolutely fantastic and will go a long way to helping kidney patients in the unit. We can’t thank Sue and Alma enough.“

With so much on offer, there should be something to appeal to everyone - we might even inspire a future Olympic champion. “But the message is don't wait, book early. It's first come, first served for all the activities and many were completely full last year.” Take To The Tees also includes two spectacular spectator events, as it opens on Sunday 21st August with the Stockton Triathlon and closes a week later on 28th August with the River Rat Race. With more than 270 competitors already entered, the Stockton Triathlon looks set to beat last year’s record of 400 who swam, cycled and ran their way around the river and its banks, more than 80 of them in a Mini Triathlon for beginners. The watersports activity taster sessions run from Monday 22nd to Saturday 27th August. Whether you come to join in, to support your friends or family, or to watch the two major race events, this is a great opportunity to find out how much the River Tees can offer.

Doctors to tackle Coast to Coast in memory of David

clinical perfusion scientist Andrew Heath, consultant in renal medicine John Main and cardiothoracic surgeon Simon Kendall, front consultant in diabetes and endocrinology Simon Ashwell. A team of hospital doctors will tackle a gruelling one-day coastto-coast ride to fund much needed research into a rare medical condition. Simon Ashwell, a consultant in diabetes and endocrinology at The James Cook University Hospital, tragically lost his son, David, to a very rare congenital condition known as Alveolar

Capillary Dysplasis (ACD) in March. David became seriously ill just 48 hours after he was born and died at only 15 days old from ACD, for which there is currently no treatment. It involves abnormal development of the capillary vascular system around the alveoli of the lungs and while babies with ACD may appear normal at birth, within

minutes or hours they develop incurable respiratory distress. Next month, Simon along with his hospital colleagues John Main (consultant in renal medicine), Richard Cree (consultant in intensive care), Andrew Heath (clinical perfusion scientist), Mike Foley (consultant cardiothoracic anaesthetist) and cardiothoracic surgeon

Simon Kendall with his son Thomas, will cycle from Morecambe to Whitby. Their 125-mile plus coast-to-coast ride will raise money for the ACD Research Fund at the National Organisation for Rare Disorders (NORD) to fund the next ACD research grant to support research into this rare and fatal disease. The funds in NORD

have been predominantly raised by the parents of ACD infants worldwide who are all members of the ACDA - The Alveolar Capillary Dysplasia Association. ACDA is a group of parents throughout the world who have experienced the tragedy of the death of a baby due to the condition. Its purpose is to gather and share information, provide a supportive environment to families and encourage research related to ACD. Simon said: “This is a devastating and fatal illness which my wife and I sadly experienced in March of this year when our baby died at two weeks old. It’s very rare there are a lot of unanswered questions even to the extent where we don’t know to what extent the disease is inherited or sporadic - so the money raised will go towards medical research. “We’ve been in contact

Simon and his wife Amelia kindly provided a photograph of their son David to be published. with parents across the world whose children have, universally, died from this and much more needs to be done to find out why?” Simon and many of his NHS colleagues are keen cyclists and all of the team taking part in the ride cycle form their homes in Stokesley, Great Ayton and Potto to the Middlesbrough hospital while Thomas cycles to university.

The cyclists will get on their bikes on the weekend of 10/11 September (day to be determined by the weather) and the ride is expected to take between eight and nine hours. Nagar Kirtan success in Middlesbrough A Sikh festival spreading the messages of love, happiness and peace took place in Middlesbrough. Sikhs from across the UK joined the local community and people from other faiths in the celebration. The Nagar Kirtan procession travelled from the Lorne Street Sikh Temple to Centre Square to encapsulate speeches, the singing of hymns, martial arts displays, face painting and free food which was provided by the Sikh community. This was primarily a religious event but people of all religions and races were invited to attend. Over 1000 people attended including Sikhs from temples in

Thornaby, Darlington, Sunderland, Newcastle, South Shields and Middlesbrough and local dignitaries. The origins of the Nagar Kirtan go back many hundreds of years when processions would take

place through the towns and villages of India. Minstrels would play music and hymns would be sang. The festival also helps raise awareness of the teachings of Sikhism and how these teachings

integrate in society today. The procession has been supported by the Middlesbrough Community Cohesion Partnership, Cleveland Police and the armed forces.

Albert Park in Middlesbrough was host to 24 children from Belarus who were made ill from the fallout from the Chernobyl disaster. The group of 24 youngsters enjoyed the park’s facilities as guests of Middlesbrough Rotary Club, which organises the annual visit. They used facilities including the swan boats and roller skating rink before having a bite to eat at the park’s Visitor Centre. The scheme, run nationally by the Chernobyl Children’s Life

Line, has been running for 11 years, offers the youngsters a month’s holiday in England to build up their strength.

All will suffer in later life from the after-effects of the 1986 disaster, their average life span being just 48 years.

Give and Gain points with Red Cross British Red Cross shop customers in Hartlepool, Redcar and Guisborough can now earn points for the pounds they spend. The humanitarian organisation is introducing a loyalty card to reward supporters who shop regularly with them and to encourage others to get into the habit. The loyalty cards, which the charity has named ‘Give and Gain’ works in the same way as other store loyalty cards. Each time a customer makes a

purchase their card will be swiped through the till to have points added. Every pound spent earns one point and customers will be sent loyalty vouchers in the post. These vouchers can be exchanged for goods from the shop or put towards the cost of taking one of the many training courses offered by the Red Cross. If customers prefer, they can give even more by donating their points back to a Red Cross appeal. The British Red Cross

NEWS

A ray of light in the energy gloom You could almost hear the pips squeak when Scottish Power and British Gas recently announced massive energy price rises. With energy costs spiralling, homeowners are looking for greener, cheaper ways to run their homes and renewable energy is suddenly big news. Jim Gillespie from 1st 4 Solar says: “The Government’s feed-in tariff (FIT) scheme offers cash payments to homes generating their own electricity from solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. Although solar systems are a significant financial commitment, typically between £6,000 and £12,000; the potential profits from FITs are impressive, with 43.3p per kWh for all energy you generate and an extra 3.1p on top of that for energy that you send to the grid. A unit of electricity (kWh) costs approx. 13 pence per

unit from your utility company, which means that you are being overpaid by at least 30 pence for every unit of electricity your solar panels produce. This in turn means you can expect to see a return of your initial capital outlay in between 6 and 7 years. This is good news as the FIT is paid to you, taxfree and index linked for 25 years, plus of course you will be receiving free electricity courtesy of your solar panels, during daylight hours. Planning permission is not normally required when fitting solar panels, unless you live in a conservation area or listed building. 1st 4 Solar have fitted solar panels to domestic households within conservation areas in both Hartlepool and Stockton on Tees. We offer a free, no obligation service whereby we will visit your home or business premises, discuss how the system works, advise you as to the best

position to fit your solar panels and then leave you with a written quotation. One important point for you to remember is that the FIT is at its highest level right now. It is due to be reduced from 1st of April next year, but the new coalition Government are on record as saying they plan to review the FIT rate thereafter. This will most probably mean they will cut the FIT rate even further than anticipated. Therefore, if you are considering having solar panels fitted the best time to do so is right now. By doing so you are locking into the highest FIT rate, which is then paid to you tax-free and index linked for the next 25 years. With interest rates stuck at 0.5% many people are taking money off deposit and investing in solar energy instead.” 1st 4 Solar 87 Stockton Road Hartlepool TS25 1SJ

Pride in their neighbourhood Residents of a street in Hartlepool have been praised for making their neighbourhood a more attractive and inviting place to live. Householders in Marlborough Street have been working closely with Borough Council officials for three years to improve the appearance of the area by putting up hanging baskets on the front of their homes. The initial driving forces behind the project were residents Betty McIntyre and Flo Thompson, and the latter now takes the lead each year by going door-to-door to ask her neighbours if they wish to participate. Irene Cross, Hartlepool Borough Council’s Neighbourhood Development Officer in the central area of the town, said: “It is an absolute pleasure to work with the residents of Marlborough Street. “Over the years, I have seen their confidence grow as they have taken ownership of their street and made it a more attractive and inviting

place to live. “I hope the project continues for many more years to come, and I would urge residents in other areas to consider getting involved in similar improvement schemes.” Mrs Thompson said: “The hanging baskets really do make Marlborough Street residents a difference by Ann McKie, Julie Clayton, brightening up the area and Flo Thompson, Dot Myers, boosting Dave McKie, Brian Moffat community and Brian Thompson. spirit.” contributing £5 towards The project came about the cost. The Hartlepool A&E department closed on Tuesday 2nd August 2011. Patients in need of emergency attention will be dealt with at the £20m One Life Hartlepool, in Park Road. The end to the long running saga comes after the A&E department was declared unfit for purpose by an independent review by health professionals, academics and local Councillors. Hartlepool A&E is one of three round-the-clock health services in town that are being transferred to a newly-created urgent care centre at the One Life Centre in Park Road. Carole Langrick, lead director for the momentum programme, said: “The momentum programme is all about moving care out of hospital where possible and closer to people’s homes. “Most services aren’t moving out of the town of Hartlepool, they are just being provided in a different place.” It means that minor

Patients will be directed from there to the right service for them. Hartlepool resident Dave Pascoe said: “This is an issue that affects everybody in our town. It is a matter of life

and death. “The views of the 33,000 people that signed the Save Our Hospital petition have been ignored.” A joint statement issued by North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust and NHS Hartlepool said they were implementing the recommendations of the independent review.

The end to the long-running saga comes after A&E department was declared unfit for purpose by an independent review.

Councillors refute A&E closure blame Hartlepool Councillors hit out at claims that they should have done more to prevent the closure of the Accident & Emergency (A & E) Unit at the town’s University Hospital of Hartlepool. Councillor Stephen Akers-Belcher, chair of the Council’s Health Scrutiny Forum, said: “It’s absolutely appalling that certain individuals are suggesting that members of the Health Scrutiny Forum are responsible for the A & E closure. This is totally mischievous, misleading and wholly inaccurate. “Indeed, in September 2010 it was Councillors on the Council’s Health Scrutiny Forum who exercised their full powers in writing to the Secretary of State for Health to object to the planned closure of the A & E. “This resulted in an independent review of the decision, led by the North East Strategic Health Authority. The review concluded that primarily for safety and training reasons, the A & E Unit should close. “It must be made absolutely clear that the

decision to close A & E rests solely with North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust. As Borough Councillors we have powers to make decisions within Hartlepool Council but we have no powers to make decisions on NHS Trust matters. “I also want to make it clear that it would serve to purpose whatsoever at this stage for the Health Scrutiny Forum to refer the closure back to the Secretary of State for Health. We did this ten months ago, a thorough review followed and the outcome was that an independent panel recommended that A & E should close. “Now that the NHS Trust has decided to close the A & E Unit and replace it with alternative arrangements, the public of Hartlepool can be reassured that the Council’s Health Scrutiny Forum will be following the progress very closely and will do everything possible to hold the Trust to account in making sure that the people of Hartlepool receive a first class service.”

It's well worth a visit, and incorporates the PSS Wingfield Castle, a Hartlepool built paddle steamer.

Built in Hartlepool by William Gray & Co. for the London and North Eastern Railway as a passenger and vehicle ferry over the Humber estuary between Hull and New Holland. 'Wingfield Castle' had a busy life. She worked hard and gave her best. Having served well she was put aside and labelled as obsolete and antiquated. Her revitalisation by an imaginative group of skilled workers has been one of the first steps in the road to the reconstruction of the civic pride of Hartlepool. In many ways 'Wingfield

Castle' reflects the history of the town of Hartlepool. Through prosperity and recession Hartlepool has carried on and through the efforts and vision of her people a bright future for all whom live, work and play here is assured. Entry is free, and visitors can tour all parts of the ship including the bridge and the boiler room you'll never complain about your job again when you see where the stokers worked! ‘BloodRun’ arrives in Hartlepool Back in June 2010, three intrepid motorcycle riders set off from Cleveland in the North East of England on a 3000-mile motorcycle trip around the UK coastline on two very special motorcycles. One was an emergency blood motorcycle on loan from the Whiteknights Emergency Voluntary Service, the other was fitted with recording equipment in order for them to film their journey. In an attempt to raise £10,000 to bring the service to life in Cleveland, they also carried out a number of fundraising initiatives for the Bloodrun. This major achievement was featured on the local TV and gave the group their first big awareness campaign, this soon followed by two bikes being donated by kind - hearted Teessiders.

Maureen came across the article about the Bloodrun, without hesitation Maureen donated her late husbands bike and the team set about raising funds and awareness. The 3,000 mile fundraising trip achieved £7,500 and the two VFR motorcycles donations. The group are on a mission to bring the much needed awareness about the Bloodbike service and visit local schools that have included: Elden Grove, Stranton. St Cuthberts, Ward Jackson, Kingsley and St Mary’s Hartlepool.

Blood Bikes Launched The launch of the Blood bikes took place at The University Hospital of North Tees and Hartlepool, initiating the

Maureen’s husband passed away three years ago and had been a keen motorbike rider, not knowing what was going to be the best solution in finding a new owner for his Honda motorbike,

start of the mission, to bring an emergency blood motorcycle service to Cleveland to ease the burden on the NHS. Steve Basford from Trackside Motors Thornaby said: “Our mission is to serve the people of Cleveland by continuing to provide an emergency motorcycle service to transport urgent and non-urgent medical items on behalf

of the NHS. Currently covering Stockton and Hartlepool and are delighted to be launching this much needed service.” Mark Say, Jon Formstone and Steve Basford volunteered their time to promote awareness of an incredibly important group of volunteer motorcyclists who deliver blood and other vital items out of hours for NHS hospitals and medical centres. These compassionate Motorcycle riders are funded purely by donations from the public and local businesses. This allows funds from the NHS to go straight back in to patient care. The volunteers are on call from 7pm to 7am 365 days-a-year including weekends! Weather dependent of course, motorcycles don't really like snow!! The trio heard about Blood bikes via Whiteknights EVS, which is a registered charity, providing the Bloodrun in the Yorkshire area and met up with the group to bring Bloodbikes to Teesside. Mark Say said: “Please support us as much as you can and please get in touch if you feel you can bring anything to the cause” (including becoming a volunteer rider.) “We have had our ups and downs since we decided to set up the Bloodrun in Cleveland, to offer a service which we hope will save the NHS thousands of pounds a year. At some points it’s looked as though despite everyone’s hard work, that the service would struggle to take off. It’s been very difficult to get to where we are

Jon Formstone and Steve Basford at the University of North Tees Hospital today, bikes, riders, raising money, getting the bikes kitted up, speaking with the NHS, gaining sponsors, and various other things such as keeping the team motivated whilst waiting for a launch date, because we did wait, and wait and wait, well, we finally got the news we were all waiting for, our going live date!” The National Health Service does not have unlimited resources. One area that is very costly to the NHS is courier services. Most hospitals operate an internal courier service to ferry diagnostic specimens, blood, notes, x-rays, scans and other medical equipment between themselves and other hospitals in the area. These services generally operate during office hours, which means that in the evening and at weekends the hospitals need to make alternative provision for items that need to be transported there and then. Blood bikes will do this for free, saving the NHS thousands of pounds annually. Whiteknight EVS are staffed entirely by volunteers, that depend entirely on public sponsorship and donations. This new service operating in Teesside will save the NHS thousands per year. This saving will go back to the NHS for patient care. The Whiteknights EVS operates throughout the UK and can meet at boundary lines to continue a safe delivery of blood to varying areas. Now Steve, Jon and Dave have got the bikes fixed up, signed up and ready, Mark is polishing up the website and many

Blood Runners others are also helping to grease the wheels in preparation for the people of Cleveland, who will benefit from this amazing service. Hopefully none of you will ever need it, but, rest assured if you do, they will be there! BUSINESS

www.the-circuit.co.uk

Business Brief Success around the area Trygg Pharma (a Norwegian company) is due to buy a pharmaceuticals facility, which closed three years ago at Seal Sands, for £14m. Trygg Pharma intends to use the plant to produce Omega 3 products and will initially employ 25 staff. Darchem, the Stillington based engineering firm, has secured a £20 million order from Boeing, which will create 100 new jobs. The firm will supply thermal blankets for Boeing's 737 jet engines. Darchem also wants to expand its footprint into the nuclear industry. Huntsman has begun its move to a new office and laboratory buildings at Wynyard Business Park where it is creating a new global business centre. px Group on Teesdale has acquired Billingham-based Simpson Coulson Ltd to increase their reach into energy and process projects in the Middle East. Caterpillar is planning to double production levels and employ more workers at its plants in Stockton (Preston Farm), Peterlee and Skinningrove after orders have recovered following the recession. Electrical engineering firm, Resilient Power Solutions in Billingham has been awarded £100,000 investment via the Finance For Business North East Growth Fund, and hopes to increase revenues by 50% (to at least £1.2m) within 12 months. TAG Energy Solutions has invested £8 million in new manufacturing equipment to support its offshore wind tubular production facility. Recruitment is under way for 100 jobs and a further 300 positions could be required. Engineering and project management company AMEC, which has a site in Billingham and employs 500 workers across the North-East, has won its first major nuclear contract by URENCO UK.

A ‘note’ about coins Coinote B.N.A. was formed as a proper trading company in January 1990. Coinote International Limited was formed 2006 Paul Turnbull says on the Subject of Coins & Coinote: “I have been collecting coins since I was four years old, that's over fifty five years ago. I initially started trading in the mid 1980's by selling my surplus coinage at car boot sales and found that I enjoyed the selling and meeting other collectors around my home area. I next graduated to markets by becoming a licensed market trader, all of this being on a part time basis as I was still at sea at the time as a Chief Engineer. When I formed Coinote International Ltd, I took on a Business Partner, Martin R Frank, Marty and myself have continued to expand our business over the years, Our portfolio now includes a Fruit & Vegetable branch, Carets for Carrots, we still trade on local markets twice a week - Newton Aycliffe every Tuesday & Stockton

on Tees every Wednesday. Our Hartlepool shop trades every other day of the week between the hours of 10am & 2pm this includes Sundays, We also trade on behalf of the company at various collectors fairs and coin fairs countrywide. Our company watchwords are honesty and fairness at all times. We still enjoy the personal contact with collectors and try to obtain for them anything that they are looking for, as long as it is at a reasonable and affordable price. Over the years that we have been trading we have tried to add good value items to the company's stock range by dealing direct with the makers of lots of different items and for the most part we have been successful in this. We are adding items all the time, if you can't see what you're looking for on the website, ask us if we stock it using the contact form we have on the site. This scheme enables operators of landfill sites to contribute money to enrolled Environmental Bodies (EBs) to carry out projects that meet environmental objects contained in the Landfill

When a landfill site is located within 10 miles of your project, you may be eligible for a 90% grant Tax Regulations. Impetus Environmental Trust is one such body. Dozens of new jobs could be on the way if plans to turn a former pub into two shops are agreed. Developers Euro Property Management want to transform the former Powlett pub, in Hartlepool, into a hot food/bakery outlet and a convenience store. It is understood that there could be 16 jobs created at the convenience store and up to eight at the bakery. The pub, which is on the roundabout at Easington Road and Powlett Road, has stood empty for two years. Euro Property Management, which is pumping £250,000 into the scheme, took over the site in March after buying it from Trust Inns. They are to submit detailed plans to Hartlepool Borough

Expansion plans for Darren at Kinnersley’s

5Darren Kinnersley behind the counter When Darren Kinnersley from Hartlepool was offered redundancy from his job as a project manager two years ago, like thousands of other redundant people, it hit him and his family hard and he took to a driving job to make ends meet. It was during this driving job that he thought of the idea to run his own

business, his wife Ethel and three teen and adult children were right behind him and the business idea began to emerge. Darren told the Circuit: “I started the business fitting tow bars and moved onto servicing, within a few months of trading it became apparent that I could put my large business

unit to additional use and we now offer safe, secure storage for caravans, motor homes, boats and most recently, with 24/7 security and CCTV, we had the pleasure of storing two of the Red Arrows jet planes, which are used in the Aerospace Engineering department for Hartlepool College.”

Darren is now expanding the business and is proud of his recent award from Cassoa (Caravan Storage Site Owners Association) Gold Award which is the highest accolade presented and represents the most secure sites, with very high standards of security. The aims of Cassoa, which was set up 10 years ago to combat the thefts of caravans, are: To act as a nationally recognised body providing an official register of safe and secure storage sites. To help site owners improve their security and services, to prevent caravan crime. To provide a strong lobbying voice to influence the views of people who make a difference in caravanning. To reassure caravan owner's they can be confident that every CaSSOA site has taken reasonable measures to protect the stored caravans. Darren is looking forward to Kinnersley’s Towbar and Trailer Centre expanding and is currently seeking a full time mechanic that has experience of car and light commercial repairs

to complement his current fitting team. This will include the service and repair of caravans and trailers including: Indespension, Richardson Rice, Bateson, Ifor Williams, Daxara, Brian James, Graham Edwards etc. Kinnersley’s also continue to provide custom built trailers to specification and towbars supplied and fitted. With the acquisition of more land Darren will also be expanding the storage side to the business with the ability to securely store up to a further 50 vans, boats or motor homes. Business Booms at Wynyard Park House

Matt Johnson, Wynyard Park Ltd’s Development Manager, is pictured at Wynyard Park House. A Prestigious office complex offering small firms a package of support and new facilities is set for expansion after becoming fully let in just over a year.

Wynyard Park House, which is located on the 700-acre Wynyard Business Park, just off the A19, offers a range of high specification serviced office space on flexible easy in/easy out terms. Matt Johnson, Wynyard Park Ltd’s Development Manager, said: “In just over a year, we have attracted 12 companies which have taken a total of around 10,000 sq ft and given the level of demand we have decided to free up another 5,000 sq ft of space.” Resident companies benefit from a fully inclusive package comprising all rent, rates, service charges, reception support, furniture, telephone lines and internet connection and they

have access to a conference area. Tenants can also choose from a service menu that includes administration and concierge services. Mr Johnson added: “Other major benefits of being based in Wynyard Park House – factors that set Wynyard Park’s scheme apart from others elsewhere include the building’s impressive marblefloored entrance hall featuring a plasma screen television and fully staffed reception area, the popular Java Café bistro and the Wynyard Rooms, an exclusive function room venue.” “To become fully let and then to be expanding in such a short space of time is an amazing chievement, particularly given the tough economic times that we have been living through of late.” “We believe that it is the combination of ongoing business support and high-class facilities

all delivered in the iconic setting of Wynyard Park House that has contributed to the stunning success of this scheme.” Elizabeth Eddy, Director of Velvet Communications which is based within Wynyard Park House, said: “When looking to move into a new commercial workspace, there was only one option I considered in the Tees Valley and that was Wynyard Park. Aside from the fact that it has an ideal central location with easy access to the A1 and A19, the quality of the office accommodation can’t be beaten and there is a real sense of community here. The news that Wynyard Park House is fully let comes hot on the heels of Huntsman’s recent decision to relocate to Wynyard Business Park and create a new global business centre. The company, one of the world’s leading

SEATON GOLF CLUB RECORD Elite Athlete 22-years-old Adam Best from Redcar and a former Yorkshire County top amateur in 2007 was competing in the Saltburn Salver in a field of 60 competitors from around the North East on the challenging Seaton Carew course. POOLS BONANZA Hartlepool United stunned the football world

www.the-circuit.co.uk 31 by announcing that they would REDUCE the cost of season tickets for the coming season from £350 to £100 if 4,000 tickets were sold by a closing date of 15th July. The sceptics said impossible! Pools only had an average gate of 2,800 last season – where would the rest come from? The townsfolk of Hartlepool showed them that there was plenty of support for the team but it was the finances that were the problem – and how they responded. Every single seat in the 5,000 seater Victoria Park stadium was snapped up. Brilliant, and well done Ken Hodcroft.

ANGLING Charlie Wood on Flamer 11 out of Hartlepool was in fine form with plenty of cod and ling and landed the fish of the day, a whopping 17lb 8oz cod. Over 60 anglers in 22 boats fished in the Jim Maidens Memorial event to raise funds for the Redcar lifeboat. Biggest fish of the day was a 15lb 10oz ling caught by Ian Robertson on Jubilee to win the Ling Cup. In the Whitby Charter Boats Festival turned into a magnificent competition with massive catches in the Junior, Ladies and Men’s competitions. Andrew Fusco on ‘Sea Otter 2’ took the cod of the day with a 17lb 12oz catch that earned him a prize of £500 in overall

third place. Second place went to Jeffrey Dove on board ‘Never Can Tell A’ with a 22lb 13oz 8dram ling for a prize of £1,000. John Wilcock on ‘Shy Torque’ had taken a massive ling during the first hour of the 30 day festival and the massive 26lb 8oz specimen gave him the £5.000 first prize for the heaviest fish taken during the competition.

FOOTBALL The FA VASE first qualifying round schedules for September 10th saw Easington Colliery drawn at home to play Prudhoe Town. TALL SHIPS RACES The Black Diamond ‘A’ Class based at Hartlepool won the first race in this year’s Tall Ships races from Waterford in the Irish Republic to Scotland in a 50+ strong field. Start of the second race from Greenock to Lerwick was

delayed for a few days because of gale force winds and rough seas. Then follows the stretch from Lerwick to Stavanger with the final leg to Halmstad scheduled for the second week in August depending on the weather.

NEIL MIDDLETON & SEATON FC It was Kenny Johnson who fostered Neil Middleton’s early days in football when he was manager of Seaton Juniors in 1981 and 14-years-old Neil joined them. Then on to Seaton Holy Trinity for a short while and then to Seaton FC in 1981 as a flying left winger. Now, after 30 years and over 1,000 appearances, he is still performing but now as the solid left-back in the team and approaching his 40th birthday. Over 50 past and present players turned out to play in the testimonial game Seaton FC v Seaton Allstars at West View Primary School. Neil who is a fitness fanatic used to play on a Friday night, Saturdays and Sundays and is proud of his dad Fred Middleton who made over 300 appearances for Lincoln City and is listed amongst Lincolns top 100 club legends. Congratulations Neil and long may you continue and be a great example to younger generations.

BURN ROAD HARRIERS The Harriers celebrated the 50-years service that Alf Walsh has given to the club by staging the ‘Alf Walsh Testimonial Old Monks Race’, in which Alf officiated as number one timekeeper for the race. Harrier’s Andy Minister led from the front amongst a very large field of runners over a very tough 5.5 mile course but was overtaken mid-way by Billingham’s Marsh House Mike Jefferies. At the finishing line it was Jefferies the winner in 32min 22secs with Minister an excellent second just 34 seconds behind him. NYSD LEAGUE Hartlepool continue to battle for their first championship title for 23 years in the Premier Division of the NYSD League. The advantage gained by the win against second placed Richmondshire was overshadowed by the defeat at Darlington. This now leaves Pools, Richmond, Marton and Darlington to battle for honours in the exciting final month of a great season.

Wynyard Park Ltd, which runs the 700-acre business park, is keen to enter into a partnership to develop the land at the rear of its Wynyard House HQ. Craig Longstaff, the company’s Catering Manager, said: “This piece of land which is a decent size but not too large, has been standing idle for a while now. By joining forces with a suitable party perhaps a school, a college, a community/voluntary group or even a retired person with time on their hands - we aim to open it up for cultivation. “Wynyard Park Ltd has an on-going commitment to work with young people to help them develop skills and achieve their full potential, and this particular project could provide a range of training opportunities. “The other spin-off would be a ready supply of home-grown fruit and
