Anti Bullying week Are you a Anti Bullying week was held 14th - 18th November, with hundreds of Teesside schools taking part in awareness workshops and events. Each of our Borough's adhere to the Anti Bullying Policy and Practitioner. Toolkits identify ways in which the Local Authorities, schools and partners aim to address bullying issues. It covers bullying that takes place in any setting, whether it is children bullying each other, adults bullying children or children bullying adults. Including bullying of a racist nature and bullying of 'vulnerable groups'. The Anti Bullying Service is part of Inclusion Support Services. The service provides help, advice and support to schools and partner organisations in developing effective anti bullying policies and strategies to help reduce the number of bullying incidents experienced by children & young people. The service also offers advice and guidance to parents where there are concerns about bullying issues in school. Middlesbrough Council was reassessed against the Anti-Bullying Alliance's local authority assessment tool by the National Strategies team in December 2010, which resulted in Middlesbrough's score improving from level 3 to level 2 on a four-point scale where a score of 1 is the best outcome. Despite this progress, analysis of Middlesbrough's Annual Young People's Survey suggests that bullying is a serious and persistent problem for local children and young people. Discussions with head teachers have highlighted the different nature of the problem between primary and secondary schools, highlighting the need for a range of approaches to tackle real and perceived levels of bullying amongst pupils. up to new study Hartlepool Council and Hartlepool United Football Club have teamed up to commission a study as part of the ongoing negotiations to sell Victoria Park to the Club. Work on the economic impact study will start shortly and it will help inform both organisations in a number of areas as follows: The economic benefits that the Football Club brings to the town. The impact the Football Club has on the local community. The role of the Football Club in promoting a positive image. At the same time the Council is also inviting developers to submit proposals for the wider development of the Mill House site. Councillor Robbie Payne, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Procurement, who also chairs the Hartlepool United Football Club Sub-Committee, said: “The Council is still minded to sell Victoria Park to the Football Club but we have always said that we want to maximise the opportunity to breathe new life into the wider

Non-surgical birthmark treatment helps 250th patient A specialist birthmark clinic is celebrating after treating its 250th patient with a leading-edge treatment. South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was the first in Western Europe to offer the procedure, which treats vascular birthmarks using an injectable drug. The trust’s birthmark clinic sees more than 100 new patients a year but thanks to the introduction of this pioneering procedure many of them do not even have to undergo surgery. The scarless treatment involves injecting bleomycin through the skin into the strawberry birthmark or vascular malformation (where the veins, arteries or blood vessels are abnormally formed) and can produce

dramatic results. Reconstructive plastic surgeon Mr Tobian Muir holds specialist clinics for adults and children at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough and the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton. Almost half the patients treated are from other areas of the UK with some people travelling from as far and wide as Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh and Carlisle for expert care. Trust results show 93% of patients respond to treatment with the injectable drug, with four out of five of these showing significant improvement. The recurrence rate is extremely low at just 1%. Mr Muir said: “It is great to say we have

helped our 250th patient as this treatment can produce life-changing results. “But there are many people out there who are not getting the treatment they should because they don’t know it’s available. “We’ve seen people who have been told nothing else can be done for them and the results they have had with this treatment have been significant. “We have a very good track record and a high success rate. Newcastle and Durham are both sending their patients to us and we have also been training staff at Birmingham Children’s Hospital to help them set up their own clinic.” Birthmarks can have a huge emotional and psychological impact on children when they are

growing up and vascular malformations can be disfiguring and cause pain and discomfort. Traditional treatment involves laser surgery or facial surgery, which leave permanent scarring, or high dose steroids which can lead to other complications. There is also a 30% potential recurrence rate in some vascular malformations following surgery. Mr Muir added: “With the bleomycin injections patients usually need three to four treatments and as it is a day case procedure, they do not require an overnight stay and are in and out of hospital very quickly. “The treatment is quite specific and gives a very natural result but best of all patients say they can feel normal again.”

Trisha’s life changing treatment avoid eating out as my tongue would pour with blood if I ate anything sharp. I was very self conscious.”

Trisha, 61, was born with a vascular malformation the size of a pinprick but as she grew up it grew with her, affecting her face and also her tongue. “I had quite a lot of operations as a child that left me with a lot of scars on my face. I also had laser surgery, but my tongue was never operated on as it was believed to be too dangerous,” said Trisha, of Stockton-on-Tees. “I suffered from sleep apnea as my airway would get blocked because of the size of my tongue – I had to use a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine for 10 years. The size of my tongue would also cause me to slur my words so it often sounded as if I was drunk and I would

Trisha’s unusual condition was seen by a number of experts and she was deemed untreatable before she was referred to the birthmark clinic at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for the bleomycin injections. Reconstructive plastic surgeon Mr Tobian Muir treated his 250th patient this month. The non-invasive treatment produced some amazing results, reducing Trisha’s tongue back to a normal size and allowing her to get on with her life. “It’s an absolute miracle. I am much more confident and outgoing now. It’s given me a new lease of life,” said Trisha. “I just wish this treatment had been available when I was growing up.”

It’s an absolute miracle. I am much more confident and outgoing now.

Discovering the bleomycin treatment has been nothing short of life changing for Trisha Smith.

Thank you Teesside & N Yorks from the Romania shoe box appeal

Like hundreds of schools, organisations and individuals from the region making up shoe boxes for Romania, the Circuit have pictured Huncliff Year 9 students Molly McMahon 14 and Jack Harrison 13, proudly displaying the pile of donated boxes - which are now being dispersed in Eastern Europe Kindness and good-will has been flooding throughout Teesside and N Yorkshire, and the corridors at Huntcliff School are no exception. With students working tirelessly to produce stacks of gift boxes for deprived families in Eastern Europe. Collecting the filled boxes as part of their annual ‘Family Shoebox Appeal’, which aims to provide gifts to families who, as the charity says, ‘often have to make a choice between buying food or fuel at Christmas time’. Students collectively produced over 100 boxes that were brimming with toiletries, sweets, toys and stationery, and decorated with dazzling Christmas paper, bows and ribbon. Having been given the incentive of an inter-form

competition to see who could produce the most; the winning year 9 form produced a massive 15 boxes and was awarded a tin of biscuits. Huntcliff School admirably raises significant amounts of money to help both local and national charities. It does so led by the School Council, where members take part in an annual vote to decide which three charities are most deserving of extra support. The ones chosen run alongside three that are continuously supported including The Mountain Trust and the council then organise fundraising events, mainly in the form of ‘charity days’ where students pay money to come to school in non-uniform.

Teesside drums for Children in Need

Dozens of young drummers from across the Tees Valley took up the challenge of becoming the fastest drummer on ‘Children in Need’ day. The event, run by the TVMS (Tees Valley Music Service), included fun challenges and activities such as the drum karaoke and the amazing drumometer challenge. Winners of the challanges were: Luke Plumpton from Saltburn and Jay Hawksby from Coulby Newham each

received a rock and pop evening session supplied by TVMS. All the money raised on the night has been donated to the Children in Need charity. Youngsters from throughout the region attended the evening. Why not pop along to TVMS for a trial session from 5.45 on a Monday at their studios within the grounds of Our Lady and St Bede’s school, Bishopton Road West Stockton. TS19 0QH. Volunteer taster day Summerhill Co-ordinator Tony Davison demonstrates the art of coppicing.

Special offers for Christmas Gift Vouchers Available open 6 days Mon - Sat

ISSA Qualified in 85 countries world wide

The chance for people to have a go at the traditional woodland management technique of coppicing at a special event in Hartlepool took place in November. A drop-in volunteer taster day is was organised by the Borough Council’s Countryside Team and staff from Summerhill, the event demonstated some fun, hands-on experience of this age-old art. Coppicing is a way of farming wood which involves cutting a tree at its base,

with the wood taken being used for a variety of purposes such as fencing, bean poles, walking sticks and firewood. Summerhill Co-ordinator Tony Davison said: “By cutting a tree at its base, it does not die but grows back with a number of stems. Once these stems grow to a suitable height they can be cut again, usually after about 10-15 years. “Coppicing is also very good for wildlife as it opens up woodland to allow ground flora to flourish.”

Holy Land Pilgrimage “During October, 36 parishioners from St Francis Parish Middlesbrough, (me included) embarked on a seven day adventure of a life time, exploring the lands and times of Jesus. We embraced our journey through the celebration of mass in several venues, sometimes indoors in lavish churches or hidden caverns, other times outdoors by the shores of Galilee or in the tranquil gardens of Gethsemane. Expectations were soon surpassed when Bible stories came to life and teachings could be felt as passages were retold and reflected upon. However

St Francis Parish, Holy Land Pilgrimage By Esther McNeill

it wasn’t long before we were reminded of the hostility and cruelty of mankind, as we offered our humble gifts of toys and bedding to the people caring within the refugee camp and rehabilitation hospital. Sometimes it was difficult to comprehend such actions in a land of promise and hope. Our guide Nasah was extremely knowledgeable and very accommodating, as he led us on our adventure. He would ask us a question daily and the one that sticks in my mind is ‘Are you a Pilgrim or a Tourist?’ On reflection, my response is to the right of the picture.”

Mayor, Cllr Olwyn Peters and Chief Fire Officer, Ian Hayton opened the garden with Frank Sweeney, Retired Grangetown Station Manager, who originally started the project. Children from Grangetown Primary School also attended. Frank Sweeney approached Impetus Environmental Trust prior to his retirement, and the Trust Board were only too pleased to support the project to create a community garden. Cleveland Fire Brigade worked with children and teachers from Grangetown Primary School, and the Dig It project to develop a community garden, which will be maintained and used by the schoolchildren and other members of the community for planting and growing produce. Teacher of Grangetown Primary School said: “The Fire Brigade staff and I have managed to secure a large grant and the groundwork has been developed into an exciting and innovative garden area which I’m sure our children are going to have great fun working in. Mrs Leadley, our Teaching Assistant who runs a gardening club in school and I attended a meeting recently at the fire station and were very impressed with the developments to the garden area. “Visits from all year groups will also begin in the Spring when the weather is better. “We cannot thank Frank Sweeney, retired Grangetown Fire Station Manager, enough for all he did to set this scheme in motion. It was his dream and he has made it all happen. I would also like to thank Cleveland Fire Brigade staff Denise Lee and Jimmy Ruse for their continuing help with the project. The children of Grangetown Primary will be eternally grateful for this wonderful resource.” Impetus Environmental Trust Chairman Peter Baker said: "This has been a delightful project with the local community involved from start to finish and we are delighted to be able to provide the £30,000 toward this project. We also encourage smaller groups and organisations to take advantage of landfill tax funding and contact us for support in 2012. As a trust we have funded £3million pounds worth of projects on Teesside, all of which have made a huge difference to

peoples lives." Further funding from Impetus Envirnmental trust was granted to local children in Loftus, who are delighted with a new play area unveiled thisweek by the Mayor, Cllr Olwyn Peters. Loftus Community Forum acquired funding of £35,000 with additional funding of £10,000 made by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council. Loftus Community Forum, Impetus and Loftus and Lockwood Neighbourhood Team worked in partnership by hosting an exhibition and consultation sessions in the local library. Local children were given the opportunity to select the items of equipment they thought would be best for their area and which they would enjoy most. This new play area in Tees Street, will give young people the opportunity to play safely knowing they had an input into the choices. Councillor Sheelagh Clarke, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, Tourism and Rural Affairs said: " The young people of the area had the chance to choose the items they wanted by working with the teams. This is a great way to bring the community together and give the young people the opportunity to invest in their own area." Children from St Joseph’s primary school enjoyed the official opening and tested the equipment for themselves.

Teesside pubs sign up to charter Alcohol Awareness Week was held 14th - 20th November to the battle to end harm caused by alcohol. The Alcohol Charter, promoted by Alcohol Concern is working in partnership between local communities, businesses and public services, and Stockton Renaissance agreed to be amongst the first to sign up. The Charter says everyone has the right to enjoy life free from the effects of alcohol harm, to be free of the pressure to drink and to be supported when they choose not to. It says children have the right to grow up protected from alcohol promotion and the negative effects of its consumption. For those who develop a problem with alcohol as well as their families it says there should be free, accessible advice and treatment. And everyone should have the right to information on the consequences of alcohol consumption on health, the family and society. Renaissance Chair Councillor Bob Cook, who is also Leader of Stockton Council, said: “I am certainly not anti-alcohol and most people are able to enjoy it

Landlord Graham Draper and Heather Hutchings from the campaign responsibly and safely. But, for some, its consumption can lead to abuse for themselves and all too frequently for others often their families. “The Charter has simple aims to protect people from the unwanted harmful effects of alcohol and to ensure there’s a way out when they need one.” Councillor Jim Beall, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Services and Health, supports the move. He said: “We have a comprehensive plan to support the work around alcohol harm across health, community and

to avoid the dangers of drinking and advice on getting home in one piece.” In its latest move, Think B4U Drink has produced 50,000 beer mats in the style of a ‘sat nav’, showing dangers to avoid. It also gives personal safety tips such as how to get home safely, places to avoid and how to stay in control. Graeme Draper, landlord of the Royal Oak pub in Stockton town centre, welcomed the beer mats, saying: “They are definitely unusual and eye-catching and will hopefully help people to think about how to enjoy their night out in safety. We don’t want to let alcohol ruin anyone’s Christmas spirit.”

police services. It includes trying to prevent harm by raising awareness of alcohol misuse, ensuring a range of treatment is accessible for people who need it and measures to tackle alcohol-related crime and disorder. “In Stockton, we already do much towards this aim, including our very successful Think B4U Drink campaign, which not only gives information about safe drinking levels but also helps people stay safe when they go out. “A partnership between the Council, Cleveland Police and NHS Stockton-on-Tees, this sets out to promote safe drinking for example, how

A sensory garden has been provided at Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice in Normanby, thanks to eight young people who are taking part in a youth programme run by Cleveland Fire Brigade. The Prince’s Trust Team Programme runs for 12 weeks in the Redcar and Cleveland area, and is designed to engage young people aged 16 - 24, helping to develop key skills such as leadership, team working, problem solving and discipline as well as providing an insight into community safety and citizenship. People are referred to the course through local organisations such as Connexions, Job Centre

Plus and Youth Intervention Services. This group raised almost £300 themselves to develop the sensory garden at Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice, Normanby, which accommodates babies who have terminal or life limiting illnesses, special and complex needs to varying degrees. The team have designed, planned and installed the sensory garden themselves over the last three weeks. Their work included generally tidying up the whole garden so that it can be used, building raised flower beds, assisting with laying a path, erecting an archway, planting and general clearing. The team also fixed and

renovated a broken water feature. The current students are halfway through their course so have six weeks left. This will involve a work placement, future planning, a team challenge working with a local community group, and a final presentation to which all their friends and family will be invited. Abby added: “The Prince’s Trust Team programme is a great opportunity for people to learn new skills and work as a team, and everyone on the course has found it thoroughly rewarding. The next 12-week course begins in January and is open to young people in the Redcar & Cleveland area aged 16-25.”

Q How many years will PDSA celebrate in 2012?

Founded in 1917 by animal welfare pioneer, Maria Dickin, CBE, PDSA is the UK’s leading veterinary charity.

The first PDSA (People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals) ‘dispensary’ opened in a small cellar in the Whitechapel area of London on 17 November 1917. The treatment was provided free of charge for the sick and injured pets of the poor (at the time this also included horses, as so many families relied on their horse to do their work). The charity, PDSA in 2012 it will celebrate 95 years of provides free veterinary care to the sick and injured pets of people in need and promotes responsible pet ownership. The charity operates

through a UK-wide network of 49 PetAid hospitals and nearly 380 PetAid practices (contracted private practices). In 2010 PDSA PetAid hospitals provided more than 2.3 million PDSA funded treatments and sold more than 360,000 preventive treatments, such as vaccinations, neutering plus flea and worming products. In addition, more than 40,000 pets are registered for PDSA funded veterinary care through PetAid practices. by Rosie McRoberts Place4pets Last month we looked at reasons why you may want to keep a rabbit and in this issue, we take a look at some simple steps to help you. Simple steps can be taken to give your rabbits everything they need to behave the way nature intended: As rabbits love to run, jump, dig and hide it is important that your rabbits are given opportunities to exercise daily in interesting areas with plenty of places to hide and explore, this

includes during the winter months Rabbits are very intelligent, social creatures that need to play and interact with humans as well as other rabbits, they can also be trained which is also great for their mental stimulation. Rabbits must be provided with a well balanced diet in order to stay healthy and to encourage their natural foraging behaviour, dispensing your rabbits food can keep them busy

and stimulated using a variety of dispensers such as cardboard boxes, hay racks, willow balls and activity balls, some of which make accessing their food more challenging. As rabbits are prey animals, their natural response to potential threats (this even includes humans) is to run and hide, because of this rabbits should be provided with places to hide, this will make them

feel more secure As all rabbits are different and all have their own individual personalities each rabbits’ specific needs should be taken into consideration Did you know?? Hay is absolutely essential in a rabbit’s diet as it helps with digestion. It helps to prevent disorders like hairballs and bloat (properly known as Gastrointestinal Stasis). Thanks for reading. The competition was organised by Hartlepool Borough Council in partnership with Hartlepool College of Further Education, which allowed its kitchens to be used for both the heats and the final. Irene Cross, the Council’s Neighbourhood Development Officer in the centre of the town, said: “This is the third time that we have staged the competition and once again it has been a huge success “There were some great recipes and I’d to congratulate all of the competitors on the high standard of their cooking.” In the heats, competitors cooked a single-course balanced and healthy meal, whilst those winning through to the final were required to add either a starter or dessert to create a two-course

Spooky goings on at OSCARS?

If parents in Hartlepool are concerned about how their children are cared for after school or during school holidays, they need to look no further than the Council-run OSCAR service. Pictured during their Halloween party spirit and an action packed day of fun and games are ssome of the attendees. “Twenty-eight children attended our Halloween theme day and most of them were in fancy dress. “We had a range of activities including games, apple bobbing, pumpkin and pepper carving, baking bats and a fancy dress competition. “Everyone entered into the spirit and had a great time – including the staff.” Children between the ages of threeand 16 have a choice of attending venues at either Miers Avenue or Wynyard Rd. Youngsters from the OSCAR (Out of School Care) club based in Miers Avenue took part in a range of activities Karen Jones, Asst Co-ordinator said:

'Staff collect children after school and transport them to one of the two centres by mini-bus. Parents can then collect their children anytime up until 6.00pm. “In school holidays, parents can drop off their children from 8.30am and have to collect them before 5.45pm. An impressive programme of activities awaits youngsters at the two centres.” Sandra Robinson, the Council’s Out of School Coordinator, said: “If parents are having to juggle working and looking after their children, OSCARS could just be the answer. Children have a great time with us and parents can relax knowing that their children are in safe hands while they work. “We have a really experienced team and offer an inclusive service catering for all children’s needs.” For further details email s.robinson@hartlepool.go v.uk

102.4 fm Jason Anderson

A word from Jason at Hartlepool Towers We’re full of the Christmas spirit here at Radio Hartlepool towers this month. It was great to see a lot of the town people at Middleton Grange Shopping Centre recently to meet Santa. Tommy and myself from the breakfast show got into the Christmas mood and wore our Christmas outfits and it must be said, the crowd were amazing. Santa had a slight delay in arriving but everyone was patient for the big man and I think it was the best year yet to meet Father Christmas. One tradition that takes place every year in Hartlepool is the Boxing Day Dip. For the last forty years it’s been organised by the Hartlepool Lions group. Norman Hope has been a guest on ‘The Morning Show’ a number of times and he is very passionate about the event, as would anyone who has organised something for such a length of time. Its Norman’s last year in charge as he is handing over to a younger team next year and he wants as many people to take part as possible this year. You can be either part of a team or do it individually. All you have to do to register is to fill in a registration card, which you can collect from the civic centre in Victoria Road or you can download one from www.hartlepoollions.wetpaint.com. As well as raising money for the Lions, a percentage can also be allocated for your chosen charity, and there’s a number of cups and trophies to be won too. As part of my job I like to meet as many of the listeners as possible, whether it’s at events such as the above or just walking along York Road. One recurring theme is that our listeners are very loyal to Radio Hartlepool and I think it’s because we are at the heart of the community and for people who can’t get out much for whatever reason, we are their only contact during the day, and they feel we are part of their extended family. Like this very newspaper you are reading we also like to concentrate on positive stories within the town and give it a feel good factor. So as we head towards the end of the year I would like to thank all our listeners for their support and we aim to bring you more from the community into 2012. Finally this month, just a reminder that if you are part of a charity group or if you are launching a non-profit making event, then you can appear on 102.4 Radio Hartlepool. All you have to do is to contact us through the website www.radiohartlepool.co.uk and explain what you are aiming to do and leave your contact details and we’ll get back to you and you could be on your local station very soon.

A Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all the team at 102.4

An appeal has gone out for people in Hartlepool to contribute their memories of National Service to a special project to help celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. National Service veterans are invited to come along to Hartlepool Art Gallery in Church Square on Tuesday 13 December between 12 noon and 4pm to be interviewed about their experiences. The stories collected on the day will be used as the inspiration for a special creative performance which will take place at the Heugh Battery Museum on the Headland during Hartlepool’s Diamond Festival next June. The project is being run by Hartlepool Council’s Cultural Services Team in conjunction with Hartlepool Sixth Form College, the Heugh Battery Museum and Cleveland College of Art and Design. Ashley Landsbury, the Council’s Cultural

Services Outreach Officer, explains: “National Service played a key part in people’s lives during the early part of the Queen’s reign and we’re keen to commemorate that contribution. “Although they might not think it, I’m sure our veterans have a wealth of stories – humorous or dramatic – and I hope they will come along to our event and allow us to record or film their reminiscences. “We’re especially keen to hear from people who did their national service in the 1950s – the decade the Queen came to the throne – and we’ll have some items of military memorabilia on hand to help rekindle a few memories.” For more information please call Ashley Landsbury on 01429 523442 or email: ashley.landsbury@hartlep ool.gov.uk

Certificates have been presented to the first people to complete a new course in Hartlepool to help managers tackle the challenges of the future. Called the ‘University Certificate Advanced Professional Development People Management’, the six month course has been set up by Hartlepool Council in partnership with Teesside University. It includes a one day a month masterclass at the university plus a range of coursework and covers key aspects of human resources and employment law, leading to a 60-credit Level 4 qualification. The study areas include recruitment and selection, contracts and employment rights, performance management, discipline and grievance procedures, managing attendance and terminating employment.

The course was set up by Sheila Watson, Employment Relations Adviser for Hartlepool Council’s Work Smart business support initiative. Over 50 people have so far signed up for the course including staff from firms and organisations including Heerema, Hartlepool United Football Club, Bridgman IBC and Hartlepool MIND. 19 of the first people to pass were presented with their certificates by Councillor Peter Jackson, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development and Skills, in a ceremony at Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience. He said: “We are very proud of our working relationships with local companies and Teesside University and local companies and I congratulate the first group to complete this

Not-for-profit organisation the West View Project runs a host of learning and development sessions for young people aged 8-18, including watersports, orienteering, rock-climbing and woodland activities. It’s keen to find more volunteers to join its friendly team. Matt Blanchard, the West View Project’s Operations and Resource Co-ordinator, said: “Working with young people is really rewarding and this is an opportunity to be part of activities which make a real difference to youngsters’ lives.

“We’d like to hear from anyone who feels they have skills, experience and knowledge which they would like to pass on to our young people and which would benefit our organisation. “It doesn’t matter how much time you can spare even if it’s an hour a month, we’d be really interested to talk to you. “We’re especially keen to speak to people with skills in environmental studies who would be interested in helping us to further develop our woodland activities area near Wynyard, and those with experience in minibus driving.” If you would like to find out more, please call 01429 272699 or visit www.wvp.org.uk

Christmas stars help boost cancer support South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has launched its 2011 Christmas Stars appeal in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. The appeal invites people to place a special message of remembrance on the Christmas tree in the atrium at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough in return for a donation to the charity which will help to provide support for cancer patients. More than 3,000 patients received their first cancer treatment at the trust last year (2010/11). Patients can access the Macmillan Information Centre,

based near the north entrance at James Cook, for practical, emotional and financial support and advice. Amanda Cormican, Macmillan Cancer Information Advisor at James Cook, said: “One in three of us will be affected by cancer at some point in our lives and it’s the toughest thing most people will ever face. We are here to help people every step of the way by providing practical, emotional and financial support as well as continuously pushing for better cancer care.” The trust will also host a Christmas Carol Service of Remembrance in the

atrium at James Cook on Tuesday 6th December at 7pm. Conducted by trust Chaplain, Reverend Malcolm Masterman, the evening will feature music from the Angrove Singers and will be followed by tea, coffee and mince pies and the chance to chat to Macmillan staff and volunteers and the chaplains. Amanda added: “By supporting the Christmas Stars appeal and the carol service you will be helping Macmillan to support future cancer patients.” Patient Bill Bell of Stockton, who was treated at James Cook for bladder cancer after

being diagnosed four years ago, said: “The Macmillan team at James Cook have been a terrific help. They are very supportive and there is always someone there to talk to.” He urged everyone to support this year’s Christmas Stars appeal: “They need the funds to keep on doing what they are doing . They have been a terrific help to me.” To receive a Christmas star to hang on the tree contact the Macmillan Information Centre at James Cook on 01642 835674 or email: amanda.cormican@stees. nhs.uk.

WELCOME TO LONGHILL INDUSTRIAL ESTATE

Vikki Jackson-Smith, Managing Director of J & B Recycling is pictured with Councillor Peter Jackson at the former Easy Skips site.

A Town eyesore which had been the bane of local people’s lives in recent years is set to be transformed thanks to Hartlepool Council and local waste management firm, J & B Recycling. The former Easy Skips site on the town’s Longhill Industrial Estate has been the subject of numerous complaints from

neighbouring businesses and residents after the company stockpiled a huge amount of waste on its Belle Vue site. This resulted in a lengthy enforcement process and action through the courts before the company went into administration in October last year. Hartlepool Council was determined to find a

solution to the long running saga and immediately approached the administrators. After lengthy negotiations, agreement was reached for the site to be sold to Hartlepool Council and on the same day it was sold on to J & B Recycling following a Council tender process. Councillor Peter Jackson, the Council’s

Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, commented: “I would like to praise the council officers for bringing this project to fruition. “They have worked very hard and been innovative in finding an excellent solution to a long standing problem. “The solution is one that is mutually beneficial to

L-R Graham Wallace a team leader at Vue cinema, Hartlepool Council Road Safety Officer Paul Watson, Cllr Pamela Hargreaves, Kath Heron, Road Safety Assistant with the Council and Kevin Hall, the Council’s Transport Officer, promote the scheme.

Businesses and organisations across Hartlepool have been praised for supporting a pioneering initiative that aims to give vulnerable people the confidence to travel independently. The Community Travel Support Network run by the Borough Council is designed to help people with special needs use different modes of transport, including bus services. It involves creating a network of buildings, businesses and facilities where people requiring support whilst travelling around the town can obtain assistance from trained staff. Such assistance can include help with reading

a timetable, giving directions, help with making a telephone call or simply providing a safe waiting place. So far, 149 businesses and organisations have expressed interest in joining the scheme. With 24 having had their staff fully trained to date, while workers at a further 16 organisations are currently being trained. They can be identified as being part of the scheme through signs featuring the “Safe on the Move in Hartlepool” logo that are displayed on their premises. Councillor Pamela Hargreaves, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Neighbourhoods, said:

“The extent of support shown for this initiative has delighted us and we would like to thank all of the businesses and organisations that have come forward. “Through this scheme, vulnerable people should be more easily able to access a range of local facilities, leading to an improvement in their quality of life.” Businesses or organisations wanting more information about the Community Travel Support Network or transport users who feel they could benefit from the scheme should call Kevin Hall, the Council’s Transport Officer, on (01429) 523695.

COMPANY ANNOUNCES NEW CHAIRMAN North-East construction company Gus Robinson has announced that it has appointed a new chairman following the recent, sudden death of Gus Robinson. Daniel Robinson (35) has taken over the reins of Hartlepool-based Gus Robinson Developments, after the sudden death of his 62-year-old father. Despite the shock and heartache over Gus’s death, Daniel says he is determined to follow in his father’s footsteps and lead the well-known firm that employs 100 people. Former jet fighter pilot Daniel, who until recently had been working in banking in Wall Street, New York said: “Everyone associated with the business is immensely proud of the legacy my dad has left. “I am acutely aware that I have very big shoes to fill, but I know that this company will continue to go forward and get

stronger. I have been involved with the company for ten years and have my own ideas on the future vision. “I am very lucky. I’ve had a world-class education and the building blocks had been put in place for me to take over. “It was always the plan for me to come back to lead the company, and dad’s death has simply accelerated this by about six months. “It is an honour to be taking stewardship of a company that is very well positioned despite the extremely tough economic challenges that all businesses are facing at the moment. Daniel added: “I have been amazed by the number of people who have come up to me in the last few days and said what a great guy my father was, and I must say that this is very comforting to me and the whole family.

Daniel Robinson (centre foreground) is pictured with his management team. Gus Robinson set the company up 37 years ago and over the years it has grown to become one of the North-East’s leading construction firms. As well as running the family business, Gus Robinson will be remembered for his involvement in local boxing and for supporting numerous community groups and organisations. A project that aims to ensure children in Hartlepool reap lasting benefits from the staging of the 2012 Olympic Games in the UK has won the backing of another primary school. St Aidan’s Church of England Primary School is the latest town school to sign up to the Ready, Steady, Walk project that was launched last year with the aim of raising the activity levels of pupils aged 4-11. Led by Hartlepool Council’s Sports Development Team, the project is part of a drive to create an Olympic legacy for the town. It involves pupils collectively walking the equivalent distance between a city that has previously hosted the Olympics/Paralympics in the modern era and London. Participating schools mark out set distances on their playgrounds and fields and use these to measure the distance walked by pupils. Sports Development Officer Rachael Pringle said: “We are delighted to welcome St Aidan’s Primary School into the project which brings the total number of participating schools to seven. “Ready, Steady, Walk

gives pupils the opportunity to not only become more active but also to learn about Olympic values and the history of the Games, explore cross-curriculum links and have lots of fun along the way. “The educational value of the project is highlighted by the links that will be made with a variety of curriculumbased subjects, including PE, English, numeracy, science, geography, history, RE and modern Foreign languages.” Caroline Barker, PE Co-ordinator at St Aidan’s, said: “We place a lot of emphasis on the promotion of healthy lifestyles and the Ready, Steady, Walk project complements that well. “It also gives us the opportunity to develop links between various curriculum-based subjects and boost our on-going efforts to make learning for our children as interesting, stimulating and fun as possible.” The Ready, Steady, Walk project has been granted the Inspire Mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire programme, which recognises exceptional and innovative projects inspired by the 2012 Games.

Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Councillor Ann McCoy, said: “This is certainly a very exciting time for the young people who learn at the Academy, their families and people living close to the site where the new, modern buildings will

soon take shape. “I would like to welcome everyone to see the designs for themselves and find out more about how the multi-million pound investment will benefit the whole community.” There was also a chance for residents to see the final masterplan for the redevelopment of the

Swainby Road area of Stockton. The masterplan has been drawn up thanks to funding from the Homes and Communities Agency. Carillion Construction Limited has been appointed through Stockton Council to build the new £17.8 million

Academy building from Government funding. Construction is expected to start on the combined North Shore Health Academy and myplace building at the end of February 2012 so young people can start learning there from April 2013. North Shore Health

Academy is co-sponsored by Stockton College Consortium, involving both Stockton Sixth Form College and Stockton Riverside College, along with Stockton Council. This project should not be confused with the new North Shore housing development close to the river Tees.

It’s all about christmas The enchanting tale of Cranford at Christmas is set to delight audiences in Hartlepool. Hartlepool’s Town Hall Theatre on Sunday 11th December.

Three hours of entertainment for only £3.50 per person (it’s free for children under two). Tickets are available from Hartlepool Tourist Information Centre in Church Square or by calling 01429 890000.

There’s a Victorian theme to this year’s ‘Christmas Crackers’ the festive family extravaganza at Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience and it’s better than ever! The whole of Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience will be gleaming with twinkling lights and a mini fireworks display will glitter across the water.

The event which is sponsored by Niramax Total Waste Solutions is on Thursday 15th December from 4.30pm to 7.30pm and is the highlight of Hartlepool’s Victorian Winter Festival. There’ll be hilarious street theatre from Mr Scrooge and Mr Scratchit and their carol-singing carriage and larger-thanlife stiltwalkers Fagin and Dodge.

Venture into the Captain’s Cabin on HMS Trincomalee for songs from the shows courtesy of Manor College of Technology and hear carols echoing across the Historic Quay from the Northern School of Music. You can also explore Victorian parlour and playground songs on board the paddle steamer Wingfield Castle in special

The Hospice has a stall in Middleton Grange Shopping Centre until 27th December, you are welcome to place a bauble on one of the beautiful Christmas Trees with a special message for a lost loved one. They will be there all day, every day, by the lift in the main square. The hospice also hosted the santa run at Ward Jackson Park on Sunday 4th December. With fun for all the family the Hospice provided costumes for everyone who took part; Santa Suits for adults and Rudolf Nose and Antlers for the children. Mam’s and Dad’s were encouraged to pull

on a Santa Suit and kit out the kids to raise some money to help the local Hospice. At 'The Place in the Park' Santas and Rudolfs were able to purchase hot drinks and snacks to warm themselves and there was a Christmas Fair where stallholders sold a variety of seasonal and festive goodies. MOTORS Handy hints for a safe, relaxing journey’s this Christmas Kids in cars Information supplied by the RAC and to be used as a guide only. Reading books can often make children travel sick. Try audio books instead. They can listen to them on their own MP3 or CD player, so you’re free to listen to your ‘boring’ music with no complaints. The more toys you give young children in the car, the more end up on the floor. And the more you have to constantly retrieve. Try tying a few of their favourite toys to their seat. No more tantrums for them, or back ache for you.

most effective, but not the most child-friendly. Ginger snap biscuits should go down a lot better.

Black is top used car colour

A recent survey by the AA has revealed that more than half of us think a family member drives too fast. According to the research by AA Driving School, half (51%) of drivers have a family member who drives too fast.

Long journeys If you’re driving for a few hours, especially at night time, choose your music carefully. Go for something upbeat. Slow music lowers your adrenalin levels and can make you drowsy. When driving at night, you’re often dazzled by another driver’s headlights that appear to be at full beam. Most of the time it’s just the alignment that’s incorrect. Make sure yours are in the correct position.

Save fuel, save

Travel Sickness money If your child gets travel sick easily in the car, try putting them in the middle of the back seat (if the seatbelt is suitable for a child). Encourage them to look out the front window. Focusing on the horizon helps stabilise them and their stomachs. Ginger is great for preventing and treating mild sickness. Ginger tea or powder is the

Bad driving habits

When you’re driving on motorways, stick to the speed limit. As well as being a safer speed, slowing by 10mph saves 40p on fuel for every 10 miles. Switch off your air con and open your air vents. Air conditioning increases your fuel consumption. Avoid sharp braking and accelerating. You could save as much as 30% on fuel costs.

Quality Used Car Sales

Almost a third of used cars purchased over the last 12 months with car finance were black according to new data from creditplus.co.uk. The previous most popular colour silver, which has held the number one spot over the last three years, has dropped to second place with 23% of sales. Creditplus.co.uk has also identified an increase in the popularity of blue, which took 20% of sales. Grey, which was very popular on new cars four to five years ago, now sits

in fourth place at 10%. Another previously coveted colour, red, only just made it into the top five with 7%. Shaun Armstrong, managing director of creditplus.co.uk, said: "Car buyers are faced with a bewildering choice of colours and shades in new and used cars. "Despite this, motorists appear fairly conservative when it comes to colour and are more comfortable choosing black over diamond black or carbon quartz. "While trendy colours

such as the striking white finishes we are seeing on Range Rover Sport for example are very appealing now, the worry is that they can just as quickly become deeply ‘uncool’. "And when that happens, their value can drop and they can take longer to sell. "Car buyers looking at brighter and more exotic colours like pink, yellow and orange need to think carefully about the resale value – these colours do not suit the palette of most motorists."

A quarter (26%) said they have a colleague who does this. Over half (56%) said that they have a family member who is scared of driving on motorways, while a third (35%) said that they have a family member who drives whilst using a mobile phone, eating, shaving or doing make-up. A third of drivers say someone in their family drives whilst using a mobile phone, eating, shaving or doing make-up. Young drivers (18-to-24) are more critical of their friends’ driving than any other age group. Three quarters (74%) of 18-to-24-year-olds said they have a friend who drives too fast; 70% said they have a friend who ‘tailgates’ and 79% have a friend who drives while using a mobile, shaving, eating or doing their make-up.

Older drivers Drivers over 65 were far less likely to have a friend they think drives too fast (43%), tailgates (48%) or drives while using a mobile, shaving, eating or doing their make-up (50%). There is no way someone would pass their driving test if they displayed these types of behaviour, so there is no place for it on our roads. Edmund King, AA President, said: “A worrying number of us think our friends, families and colleagues have illegal and dangerous driving habits. “Young people are particularly likely to have noticed dangerous driving habits amongst their friends. “There is no way someone would pass their driving test if they displayed these types of behaviour, so there is no place for it on our roads.” Conversely, when questioned about their own driving skills, most motorists were confident of their abilities. 71% said they were ‘quite’ or ‘very’ good at sticking to speed limits and when it comes to tailgaters; 89% said there were ‘quite’ or very good at keeping a safe distance.

Hartlepool and District Motor Club H&DMC (Hartlepool and District Motor Club) was formed in 1902, the main aims of the club are the promotion and support of all forms of motorsport, with the organisation acting as a focal point for motoring enthusiasts in the local area. The club organises 12 car rallies, club tarmac and grass autotests, quizzes, table top rallies, navigational scatters and treasure hunts. Access to further events like stage rallies, road rallies, production car trials, single venue events, rallycross etc, is also arranged in association with other regional clubs in the Teesside Motor Sport Group. The vast majority of events can be entered with a normal road car, you do not need a specialised competition car. There are a large amount of organised local events on offer within easy driving distance of Hartlepool, many of which require no more than a standard car and a desire to enjoy yourself. Road Rallying/12 Car Rallies. All manner of events are run under the umbrella title of ‘rallies’. However the

most popular are simply known as road rallies. The essence of this type of event is to maintain a time schedule through a series of control points by following route instructions, which often put a great emphasis on navigation. These events take place on normal public roads, almost always at night. All competing cars must be properly taxed, tested and insured. A variation on the road rally is the 12 car rally, the most common form of this event.

Autotests This is one of the cheapest and most enjoyable forms of motorsport, where you can use a perfectly standard road car, but where driving ability is vital. Cars compete against the clock. The driver must negotiate a set route between, through and around various obstacles, normally plastic pylons or cones. Usually, some parts of the course will be tackled in reverse. The surface is normally smooth, often tarmac. The entry is divided into classes, according to each car’s size and technical specification (front and

rear wheel drive, for example). An annual British Autotest Championship is held, which includes the clubs Championship Round. Minimum Requirements: Any roadworthy car, you must be at least 17 years old to drive.

Rallying The most popular form of motorsport in Britain, perhaps because it involves ordinary looking cars. It involves two people working together - a driver and a co-driver or navigator. The cars normally run at one minute intervals, competing against the clock rather than each other. While very specialised cars are required for top level special stage rallying, unmodified, everyday cars can be used for simple road events, making this the most popular form of rallying. Check the Road Rallying/12 Car Rally section for more details.

Drive Responsibly this Christmas Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit launched the Christmas Drink and Drug Drive campaign 1st December to prevent anyone driving under the influence of drink or drugs this festive season. Police will team up with Middlesbrough Council’s Safe and Active Travel team, and The Albert Centre, a registered charity which is approved by the Home Office to provide Drink Drive Rehabilitation Courses and who also offer alcohol and drug advice, support and counselling. Middlesbrough Council and The Albert Centre will be raising awareness by providing advice in relation to the safety, and health implications of increasing and hazardous alcohol consumption and enforcing the message that drink and drug driving is unacceptable. The campaign will run throughout December and into the new year, and will include the random stop checking of vehicles at all times of the

day and night, as well as targeting areas known for drink-related collisions and drink or drug drive offenders. Drivers are to be reminded that the morning after they have been drinking, they may still be over the limit and could face fines or be banned from driving if found to be over the drink drive limit. Inspector Mick Little, who is also a member of the Cleveland Casualty Reduction Group, said: “During December, officers across both Forces will be carrying out random checks on drivers at all times of the day and night in a bid to enforce the law. We work all year round to try to get the message across but some choose to ignore our pleas. “Drinking alcohol or taking drugs and then driving is totally unacceptable and irresponsible and could result in a fine, a driving ban, serious injuries or even fatalities. This Christmas we will be urging drivers not to take the risk.

By having a designated driver or using public transport there is no chance of arrest or prosecution.” Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operation’s policy is to breathalyse any driver committing a moving traffic offence, or who is involved in a collision, and anyone suspected of drinking alcohol. Drivers will also be offered the opportunity to provide a voluntary breath test in support of the campaign. Drug drivers will be dealt with by means of roadside field impairment tests to assess for the effects of drugs. Councillor Nicky Walker, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Transport, said: “It is simply unacceptable to get behind the wheel when under the influence of alcohol or drugs at this or any other time of the year. “This year’s campaign is aimed at the tiny, selfish minority who still insist on putting their safety

Local company Motorcool Services Group based in Thornaby PPPicked up a great order when they were approached by a manufacturing firm who design and make ice skating aids for youngsters and were aware of Motorcool’s specialist powder coating and repair service. The delightful penguins often get battered and and that of others at risk. “The warning is clear you will be caught, and you will be banned from driving.” Janet Serginson, Identification and Brief Advice Coordinator at The Albert Centre, said: "The Albert Centre aim to enhance the quality of life to the people of the Tees Valley by promoting sensible drinking patterns, raising awareness of drugs and alcohol and their effects by offering help to those suffering the effects of alcohol and drug misuse." Inspector Little added: “We will be raising awareness and educating the public over the Christmas period and be assured that we are determined to catch those drink drivers who choose not to listen to our warnings.”

bruised in their everyday life on the ice and that’s where Motorcool step in. They repair and refurbish the cute characters and send them back on their merry way, to a variety of ice rinks across the UK. Eddie Smith owner of Motorcool said: “This is one of the most pleasant parts of our job, with the happy go lucky faces in our workshop, waiting to be brought back into full service and knowing that so many young people can enjoy them while learning to ice skate.” This of course is not the only repair service that Motorcool provides, with extensive knowledge of the motor vehicle industry and having traded for over 38 years, Eddie and his specialist team can repair radiators, oil coolers, diesel and petrol tanks, alloy and steel

wheel refurbishments, cycle and motorcycle frames, split rims and cast iron radiators to name a few. Now a new product is in their workshop, which enables the team to repair twisted, bent, buckled, cracked or distorted wheels. The new technology enables them to repair any wheel to the highest standard and is a first in Teesside. So what are you waiting for? Pppick up the phone and book in your car! If you see a stray penguin bring that too. The penguins are featured throughout this issue of the Circuit for one lucky reader to win a girls bike. BUSINESS IN BRIEF Hi-tech manufacturing gets funding boost The region will share in a £140m pot of funding to boost hi-tech manufacturing, the Government has announced. Part of the cash will go to the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI), based at NETPark in Sedgefield, County Durham and Wilton on Teesside. It focuses on industrial biotechnology, anaerobic digestion, smart chemistry, sustainable engineering, thermal technologies and printable electronics. It is one of seven regional facilities across the country being grouped together to form a high value manufacturing technology and innovation centre that will receive more than £140m over a six-year period with final details yet to be finalised. BID could generate £25m+ boost for Middlesbrough economy Middlesbrough town centre retailers could benefit to the tune of £25m+ if a Business Improvement District (BID) is successfully set up, according to independent data. Studies on established BIDs in other parts of the UK show that activities to improve the environment, safety and appeal of town centres has increased footfall by between 2.8% and 11.1%. According to research experts Experian, the Middlesbrough retail economy was worth £937m in 2008, meaning that a BID in the town would potentially bring an extra £25m to £100m in increased shopper spending if it replicated success elsewhere in the country. Businesses in the town centre are currently being consulted on plans for a BID. For more information on the Middlesbrough BID, visitwww.middlesbroughbid.co.uk

Royal opening in town H.R.H Prince Charles visited Teesside in November

HRH Prince Charles visited Middlesbrough to officially open The Corner Emporium in November it was also during the week of his 63rd birthday. Supported by Middlesbrough Council The Corner Emporium offers new retailers a chance to test trade their products and receive practical business support to develop their businesses. The Business Link advisory service is now ceased. The services will be replaced by a redesigned national website and a new telephone helpline. The first of the new online initiatives was officially launched in November and include 'My New Business' for new entrepreneurs and 'The Growth and Improvement Service', designed to be "the first place to go to access essential information, support and services for businesses". To find out more visit: http://bit.ly/twAhYK A quarter of North East manufacturing, engineering and processing firms can’t find enough skilled workers to meet the demand, despite growing unemployment in the region according to manufacturing group EEF. Teesside Council’s, together with Teesside University, Middlesbrough College and other organisations are working closely to address this. Leading offshore and energy companies have come together in a group aiming to return momentum to the North East’s ambition of becoming an international offshore wind industry hub. The 19 firms have linked up to create Energi Coast, the North East England’s renewables group. The North East Chamber of Commerce’s quarterly economic survey demonstrates that the region continues to perform well in overseas markets and that UK sales for manufacturers are still rising. Tata is to invest £2m at its Hartlepool plant and more than £30m in a coal injection plant that could significantly speed up production at its Teesside facility.

reWards for Who-ray for who -Ray! Wynyard Park tenants

A 700-ACRE business park on Teesside has launched an innovative benefits scheme to “reward” resident companies and their employees. Wynyard Park Ltd has issued each of its tenants with a reWards card that gives access to a range of discount offers from some of the most exclusive brands in fashion, health and beauty, retail, business and leisure. Development Manager Matt Johnson said: “The reWards scheme reflects our commitment to ensure that people get the very best out of their experience of working at Wynyard Park and that they enjoy coming into work every day. “It is also part of our on-going drive to create a location that is much more than just a traditional business park. “Our ultimate aim is to provide a unique environment where people feel that they belong to a community and are part of something special.”

The reWards scheme has involved Wynyard Park Ltd joining forces with some of the biggest-name retailers, boutiques, bars, restaurants, hotels and leisure attractions. These include: Alton Towers, Legoland, Go Ape!, Sunderland Empire, Madame Tussauds, Specsavers, Seaham Hall, DFDS Seaways, Hays Travel, Rockcliffe Hall, Hooker and Young, Springs, Wynyard Golf Club and Sharp. “We are delighted to be able to offer the reWards scheme to our tenants, and we’d like to thank all our partners for their tremendous support in making this possible.” added Mr Johnson. The business park continues to rapidly expand and evolve and plans to create a mixed use sustainable community that includes a hospital, homes, shops and leisure facilities are well underway.

VAT loophole stopped The government closes the loophole which allows VAT on small goods The government have announced plans which will stop retailers avoiding paying VAT by procuring goods from the Channel Island. This oversight has been used more frequently by retailers selling CD’s and DVD’s online. This loophole was costing the government £140 million a year. Low Value Consignment Relief (LVCR) will not apply to goods sent from the Channel Island to the UK from the 1st April. LVCR set up for tax exemption purposes for

goods coming from outside the European Union so that they could avoid paying small amounts of tax, as collecting it would cost the more. HMV and Waterstones, who have come under fierce pressure from Channel Island registered online retailers, whose sales models have been taking advantage of the loophole in the VAT rules to offer cut price goods to British consumers. The situation is not at all good however for the run of the mill British consumer, who will quite literally pay the price.”

Who-ray! for Awards Stockton gift shop Who-ray! has been named 'Independent Retailer of the Year' at the inaugural Town Centre Business Awards. Established in Silver Street since July 2010, Who-ray! has become a ‘jewel’ in Stockton Town Centre's retail crown, and built up a loyal customer base through constantly innovating and expanding

into new fields and audiences. They offer a wide variety of giftfriendly products and quirky goods, within a warm, enthusiastic and welcoming atmosphere. Co-proprietor, Martin Shipley, commented: "We'd like to express our gratitude to Who-ray!'s customers, and our supporters & volunteers, who have helped us through our first year in

Stockton Town Centre. It's great that Stockton Council have chosen, through these awards, to focus on the retail experience that can still be found through High Street shopping. We're looking forward to our second Christmas, and are confident that we have something for everyone - from fragrant candles to Doctor Who."

Over £22million fund allocated for Teesside and North East The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government has recently announced a £22,406,963 Growing Places Fund to provide up-front funding for major infrastructure projects in the North East and the Tees Valley. As part of the Government’s pro-growth agenda, the Fund is intended to promote the delivery of key infrastructure to unlock developments, helping to generate jobs and homes that communities need. Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) will be responsible for deciding how and where the money is spent. Melys Pritchett, a Development Consultant at Savills and Public Policy specialist says: “It is intended that the funding is targeted at stalled schemes that have

planning permission and are ready to go. This is not a grant; the Government will be expecting quick returns on their investment that can be recycled into local revolving infrastructure funds, allowing for more and more projects to come forward over time and for the benefits of the investment to grow exponentially.” Adam Key, a Planning Consultant at Savills adds: “At face value this seems like a positive development which should be encouraged. However, it is important to remember that this is not new money; the former Regional Development Agencies would have utilised this funding in similar ways. Individual LEPs will also need to ensure that the

selected projects are as genuinely ‘ready to go’ as the Government is envisaging to ensure deliverability - and that the money is recycled to deliver further projects”. The Government is seeking to make single payments to a nominated lead local authority across the UK by the end of the 2011/12 financial year, compensating for the criticism around the speed of spending under other recent initiatives such as the Regional Growth Fund. Melys concludes: “Any such infrastructure funding is great news for the development industry and history has proven that delivering infrastructure is the best way to kick-start much wider economic recoveries.”

Apprenticeship incentives The North East’s largest business membership organisation today welcomed Government moves to incentivise apprenticeships. James Ramsbotham, Chief Executive of the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC), backed Business Secretary Vince Cable’s announcement on new measures to ensure more young people benefit from an apprenticeship, and to help employers gain the skilled workers they need to grow as a step in the right direction. As part of the Government’s plan for growth, Ministers want to make it easier for

companies to take on apprentices, and ensure that the quality of apprenticeships is continually improved. The Government aims to slash red tape that can deter hard pressed firms from taking on apprentices, and provide a financial incentive to help the smallest firms recruit their first young apprentices. James Ramsbotham said: “NECC has campaigned long and hard to for stronger incentives to help more businesses access the many benefits of apprenticeships and as the region’s largest independent

apprenticeships provider we welcome today’s announcement as a step in the right direction. “For many companies apprenticeships are a critical way of training young people and adults to fill specific roles within their organisations, helping both the individual and business develop together. “By removing the red tape, making education more accessible and flexible and covering a percentage of the costs of an apprenticeship today’s announcement will not only help boost workforce skills levels, but also help address the worrying rise in youth unemployment.”

Have your say, but hurry! Time is about up... Time is running out for residents in Hartlepool to help shape the development of adult care services in the town over the next few years. Over the last two months, Hartlepool Council has been consulting residents on its vision for the future development of adult social care services and that consultation will come to an end on Monday 5th December. Adult social care is increasingly focused on keeping people in their own homes for as long as possible through personalised services which offer them more choice and control. Last year, 5,478 people were supported to live independently through social care services in Hartlepool. However, adult social care faces significant challenges in the years ahead. People are living longer, with the number of people over 85 in the UK set to increase by over 50% in the next decade and the number of people with dementia expected to double.

These challenges have to be met alongside the impact of the recession on public finances and Hartlepool Council remains committed to delivering the best possible services to residents who need adult social care. The Council’s vision document for the future called ‘Moving Forward Together’ sets out proposals for adult social care in the years ahead, outlines the priorities and draws up an action plan for how they will be delivered. It is committed to supporting people to achieve a more fulfilling and independent life by extending the control they have over their care and support. This would involve user led organisations and community initiatives plus a pivotal role for volunteers. All services will be built around the person and personal budgets would be offered as the norm to people who need support. Geraldine Martin, Head of Service in the Council’s

Child and Adult Services Department, said: “These are very important proposals for people who receive adult social care support in Hartlepool.“I hope that as many people as possible will take the time to look at our vision document and give us their views on it before the consultation ends on 5th December.” The Moving Forward Vision document is available on the Hartlepool Now website at: http://www.hartlepoolnow .co.uk/798/news/movingforward-together.html Comments should be sent to Geraldine Martin or Leigh Keeble, Development Officer, in the Child and Adult Services Department, Hartlepool Borough Council, Civic Centre, Hartlepool TS24 8AY. Campaign Launched Hartlepool Council is launching an on-line Christmas Smarter Living campaign to encourage local residents to do their bit for the environment during the festive season. Each week day in December until Christmas, it will be issuing separate tips on small actions that can make a big difference.

This advice will be posted on the Council’s own website at www.hartlepool.gov.uk/ch ristmastips and issued via Facebook and Twitter. A range of issues, including recycling, food waste, energy usage, composting, waste disposal and responsible dog ownership, will be covered. The use of on-line media

in this way is a first for the Council, and Environmental Projects Officer Kate Ainger said: “We are keen to get our messages out to as wide an audience as possible and this campaign will enable us to spread and update information very quickly.” She added: “There’s a lot we can do as individuals to reduce our impact on the

environment, particularly at this time of the year when there is a tendency to over-indulge. “We hope people will support our drive for a more sustainable future by logging on to find out more about what they can do. They might also be pleasantly surprised to find that they can save some money by living just that little bit smarter.”

Nominate Your Heroes! THE search is on for the unsung heroes who help to make Hartlepool a safer place. The Safer Hartlepool Partnership is inviting nominations for its 2012 Community Safety Awards. This year, there are three awards categories – the Individual Award, the Community Safety Group of the Year and the Community Safety Volunteer of the Year. The deadline for nominations to be received is December 16, and the winners will be

announced at a ceremony at the Belle Vue Community Sports and Youth Centre on January 18 next year. Hartlepool Mayor Stuart Drummond who chairs the Safer Hartlepool Partnership, said: “There are many public-spirited people either working as individuals or as members of a group - whose selfless actions benefit others and help to make the town safer, but they often don’t get the recognition that they deserve. “The Partnership is

keen to address this and I would urge people to support us by nominating people for an award.” The Individual Award will go to the nominee who is judged to have contributed most to community safety in the past year. This could be, for example, someone who has given evidence that has helped to secure a conviction or a person who has set up a residents’ group to tackle community safety issues. The Community Safety Group of the Year award is open to residents’

associations or other community group, including youth groups. SPORT CYCLING 18-year-old Josh Teasdale of Norton and Middlesbrough College student completed his season by collecting two prestigious National titles and is now looking forward to next season where, as an under-23 rider, he will be competing against the cream of British and European cycling greats. Josh won the National Junior Best All Rounder (BAR) title over four 10-mile(2) and 25-mile(2) time trials, in a time six minutes quicker than when Chris Boardman won the title. He followed this by winning the National Junior Hill Climb Championships recently in Derbyshire. Following a Winter season in the Track League in the Velodrome in Manchester Josh will then be competing next summer in the UK Domestic Calendar and some events in Belgium for his team Jewson.

GOLF When the 10-year-old girl Alex Stevenson turned up at the David Leadbetter Academy at Wynyard Golf Club recently for Winter coaching with the Durham County Juniors she looked a little out of place against the other girls, all some five years or more older than her. Lining up for the Northern Junior Championships at Durham City her father Mark was overawed at the mass of players from the six counties that the youngest player Alex was due to compete against. And compete she did! Two rounds later Alex emerged winner of the under-14 nett section playing some sensational golf that her golf coach Andrew Nicholson quoted ‘Alex is one awesome piece of kit.’ Having picked up her first club at the age of seven, the South Durham youngster earned her first handicap of 54 eighteen months ago and is now down to 15. She has added the title of winner of the girls’ Order of Merit in the

KARATE KIDS With only three members and no equipment, the Headland Shotokan Karate Club was set up only a year ago following the closure of a previous club at the Headland. Instructors John Walker and Malcolm Crowther helped to set up the new club, which eventually moved to St Oswalds Church Hall in Millbank Road in Hartlepool. DODGEBALL This is a new one on me! But the sport of Dodgeball appears to have been on the way in the UK for the past two years or so, mainly in the East, South and Midlands and particularly in colleges and Uni’s. However, we do have an

England International Dodgeball player on Teesside in the form of Becky Evans of Great Ayton who is studying at the University of Nottingham. Former Stokesley School student Becky has been selected to the England squad who are going to Sweden to play in the European Championships. However, finances are a severe problem for Becky and any potential sponsorship would be greatly appreciated. Contact her on eaydrie@nottingham.ac.uk .Dodgeball by the way appears to be teams of five or six players a side, three balls in play and everyone attempting to hit an opposing player with a ball. Popular in the USA. Google it for full info.
