Purdie I am now into my 13th year and I live with Jeff and Maria, the proprietors of the Circuit. I do like to provide my doggy prospective opinion within each issue, so here I go again. The ‘Big Bloom’ is on within our towns and villages and this year is no exception, the Circuit has featured Guisborough with its volunteers in this issue, however there’s many more of you still hard at work getting ready for the big bloom and making the places we work and live a much nicer place to be, so

Staff and pupils from Gleneagle resource centre with their new minibus A charity which supports a centre for children with disabilities is celebrating the arrival of a brand new minibus. The Friends of Gleneagles Resource Centre have helped raise £12,000 over the past ten years for the minibus. Now with the help of the Variety Club and sponsors De Vere Hotels, the brand new minibus has arrived. It will be used by children who attend the

Gleneagles Resource Centre in Saltersgill, Middlesbrough. The centre offers valuable short break provision to around 60 children with disabilities. The minibus, which has a tail-lift for wheelchair users, will be used to take the children on visits and excursions, especially during the school holidays. The new bus replaces the centre’s old minibus which was also supplied

with the help of the Variety Club a decade ago. Jackie Culley, treasurer of the Friends of Gleneagles Resource Centre, said: “We are extremely grateful to the Variety Club for our brand new minibus. It is the second time they have helped which is fantastic. “We use the minibus a lot. It’s crucial to enable the children to have days out to the wonderful parks we have in

Middlesbrough and other favourite destinations. “A lot of hard work has gone into fundraising and we are just delighted it is now a reality.” To mark the bus’s arrival the Variety Club took a group of children from Gleneagles on a special trip to De Vere’s Slaley Hall Hotel in Northumberland where they played golf games with professional players Sandy Lyle and Carl Mason.

WONT ATHAT GO AWAY AGAIN World War Two Evacuation Musical

The cast at Fairfield Primary School The Year Five children at Fairfield Primary School have been bringing World War Two history to life, by rehearsing for the “world premiere” of a new musical extravaganza titled “Won’t Go That Way Again.” It is set firstly during the mass Evacuation at the start of World War II in 1939, and then during the Battle of Britain one year later, in 1940.

The children have had lots of fun learning songs about rationing, the blackout and the evacuation (codenamed “Operation Pied Piper”). The musical also explores the plight of refugees who fled from the Nazis. Y5 Teacher and author of the show Paul Whitaker said: “The things that happened in World War II should never be forgotten, and it is important that each

generation remembers what went before. Through our creative studies this year, we have found that the children have developed a much deeper understanding of history.” The performances also mark the end of an era, as they are the last major event to be staged in the old Fairfield Infants building, which will shortly be demolished due to a huge expansion

Youth centre opens at Redcar Fire Station

Redcar Fire Station The new Redcar Community Fire Station located on Trunk Road is now open and is a stateof-the-art fire station and community centre. Fire crews are fully operational from the site, whilst the community centre side opened Monday 20th June. The community centre aims to

bring together partner agencies under one roof to deliver services to meet the needs of children young people in the area. Partners who will be using the centre alongside Cleveland Fire Brigade include Redcar and Cleveland Council, Safe in Tees Valley, Anti-social Behaviour Team,

Cleveland Police. Jean O’Donnell, Chair of Cleveland Fire Authority said: “Young people in our community will benefit greatly from this unique centre and it will improve our ability to help and influence them in a positive way.”

programme The Nursery, Reception and Infant children have already moved to an amazing new building connected to the rest of the school. The remainder are expected

to move into their new build in September. Dates of performances for parents: Tuesday 5th July, 1:15pm and Wed 6th July, 6:00pm

Success for Cleveland Fire Brigade’s fun day Over 1600 young people, their families and members of the public flocked to Cleveland Fire Brigade’s Learning and Development Centre’s Open Day last month to join in the fun. This was the brigades third annual event, aimed to showcase the Brigade and its many services and gave people the chance to ask questions and participate in fun activities and safety lessons. A number of community partners and agencies also joined in the day including Cleveland Police and Safe in Tees Valley to meet the public at this popular event. Some of the activities for those who attended were: football, rugby, ride a fire engine, face painting, climbing wall, wear a breathing apparatus mask, owl display and giant sized traditional games. Middlesbrough Football Club also brought their Health Bus and there were urban street dancers performing. Kevin Readhead, Head of Learning and Development said: “We are really pleased with how well the day went and the feedback has been fantastic. The number of visitors doubled on last year’s event. Lots of people took up the offer to have a free Home Fire Safety Visit carried out in their

home and helpful advice given out throughout the day to help keep our communities safe. “I would like to thank all those who came and made the day what it was and hope they all got something out of it and in particular I would like to thank Redcar and Cleveland Community Safety Partnership Team for their assistance in holding the event. Photos from the event can be found on Cleveland Fire Brigade website at www.clevelandfire.gov.uk and facebook or twitter pages.” Cleveland Fire Brigade offers residents a free Home Fire Safety Visit, Call them on 01429 874063 to arrange a visit at your convenience. People across Teesside are safer as a result of Cleveland Fire Brigade’s significant work to protect communities and make Cleveland a safer place to live. The last year has seen a further 8% (365) reduction in the number of fires we have to deal with contributing to a significant five year reduction of 44% (3310); this includes a 38% (127) reduction in accidental fires in the home. The reduction in the number of fires over the last year means that we have not only contributed to a reduction in the

area’s carbon footprint but have saved the local economy over £3,000,000. We continue to carry out proven prevention and protection activities such as free Home Fire Safety Visits and over the last year have undertaken 18,000 of them ensuring we really reach out and understand the diverse needs of individuals in their homes. Working with children

and young people is very important to us and therefore we continue to provide our schools education programmes as well as diversionary activities such as football and rugby. Ian Hayton, Chief Fire Officer said: “Cleveland Fire Brigade continues to make improvements and we are proud of our achievements, particularly in the current climate.

Travel with independence The gold standard A brand new travel training centre opened in June, giving young people across Stockton the chance to learn about everything from road safety to independent travel. Based at Abbey Hill School and Technology College, the Independent Travel Training Centre, will provide an opportunity for children and young people with disabilities to develop independent travel skills. It has been developed by Stockton Council, Abbey Hill School and Technology College, young people and parents and is funded through Aiming High For Disabled Children. The Centre has been laid out on the existing school site using the existing road markings. There are three types of crossings, two sets of traffic lights, bus shelter, bike shed, raised curbs and other street furniture. A dedicated travel trainer will work with children and young people across the Borough to promote road safety and train them to travel independently. It will also be available to all primary school pupils to carry out Bike Ability

training and road safety training. The travel trainer, from the Council’s Community Transport Service, is now based at the Centre and over the next 12 months will work with staff at Abbey Hill to train them to use the facility for future pupils. Councillor Ann McCoy, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “This new centre will be invaluable in helping hundreds of children and young people learn the skills Helen King at the official opening of the Independent Travel to allow them Training Centre to travel independently. Pupils from the two schools are pictured celebrating their awards All Saints CE Secondary and Preston Primary are Stockton’s first schools to earn the new Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) – and they have achieved it at the highest possible Gold level. 29 of the Borough’s schools are currently working towards the award, which recognises their work to remove barriers to participation

and learning for every learner. The IQM is awarded at 3 levels, from Bronze for schools in the early stages of their focus on inclusion to Gold for those with outstanding work to ensure no child is left behind. Councillor Ann McCoy, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and young

People, said: “Inclusion means all children can benefit from educational opportunities which are liberating, raise aspiration, develop self-esteem and improve life chances. “It’s amazing what they can achieve when they feel valued, enjoy learning and are ready for the challenges of a working life.”

Tea time for change Over 1,900 supporters from across the UK asked their MPs to support efforts to help end global poverty. Development agencies are asking MPs to back three key issues: Keep supporting aid and make it count To stop big business dodging taxes in developing countries and shine a light on the payments companies make to governments. To champion innovative and fair financing for development Tea time for change was a mass lobby of Parliament organised by aid agencies ActionAid, CAFOD, Christian Aid, Oxfam, Save the Children and Tearfund and held on 9th June. All the local MPs were involved. Mrs Doyle’s (from cult TV show Father Ted) brewed up change in Westminster at ‘Tea Time for Change’.

The mass lobby of politicians, brought people face to face with their MPs to discuss international development over a cup of tea and ask the government to make the vital changes needed to end global poverty. Secretary of State for International Development Andrew Mitchell, Shadow Secretary Harriet Harman and over 130 other MPs agreed to meet their constituents over a cup of tea and talk about tackling global poverty with people who care

passionately about these issues. ActionAid’s Head of Campaigns, Jenny Ricks, spokesperson for Tea Time for Change said: “Supporters of international development used Tea Time for Change to share a cup of tea with their MPs. They pushed for the changes needed to stop more than a billion people going to bed hungry each night, 1,400 women dying in pregnancy and child birth every day and 72 million children missing out on education.”

Wii’ll benefit from ‘Friends’ gift The ‘Friends of Stead’ (FoS) have been generous benefactors for patients in the Redcar area for many years, having fund raised for additional equipment in the now disused Stead Memorial Hospital and more recently for Redcar Primary Care Hospital. The group of volunteers has gained a few more friends by purchasing a TV and Wii games system for patients costing £800 at the new hospital in the town. The games system was at the top of the ‘wish list’ of the occupational therapists and physiotherapists based in Redcar Primary Care Hospital. Rachel Cowperthwaite,

Occupational Therapist, said “We really appreciate this donation from the Friends of Stead. It helps the patient improve particular movements especially coordination and hand function while having a bit of fun at the same time.”

New build at Green Lane Primary

Happy retirement to Jenny Dowling A familiar face at a Middlesbrough primary school was a VIP for a day when she opened its brand new building. Jenny Dowling has been a nursery nurse at Green Lane Primary School nursery for the past 30 years. On Monday 20th June Jenny officially opened a brand new extension which houses the nursery and three reception classes at the school. The new building has been constructed under Middlesbrough Council’s Primary Strategy for Change programme and is already being used by 160 pupils and staff. As well as the nursery and three classrooms, the new extension includes a Sure Start Children’s Centre, an office and new entrance. Jenny is retiring this summer after working at Green Lane since 1984 the year the nursery first opened at Green Lane. The old Foundation

Stage building, which was separate to the main building, was repaired and improved many times over the years but in the end was no longer fit for purpose. Jenny said: “I have loved my work at Green Lane and have always thought the children here have had the best possible start in their education. “Now that we have a new Foundation Stage block I think they will have an even better start. “Things have come a long way since September 1984 when we had an empty room and only two weeks to open the new nursery! “I will miss my work so much and also the children, my colleagues and the parents/carers but wish them and the wonderful new building good luck for the future.” Headteacher Janet Lucas said: “Everyone at Green Lane is delighted with our much needed new build and we feel

very fortunate, in such tough economic times, to have been included in the first phase of Primary Strategy for Change before the new government changed policy in relation to school buildings. “We have been hugely impressed with the quality of the design and of the build. “Throughout the process all involved worked co-operatively and were willing to adapt the design and the specifications to ensure that the finished building exactly matched our requirements. Walter Thompson builders. “All our staff and children are loving their new classrooms and superb facilities which will greatly enhance our curriculum provision over the coming years.” Councillor Mike Carr, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Children, Families and Learning, said: “Our Primary Strategy for Change programme is helping to create firstclass educational establishments. “This new building at Green Lane is a great example of that and I’m delighted it has been so well received by the staff and pupils.”

Puppy talk It is always advisable to housetrain a dog as early as you possibly can. Just like infants, little puppies have no bladder control until they are around 3 months old. This means therefore you have to toilet train your puppy right from the start. But how do you go about housetraining? First and foremost, you have to understand that dogs have a very sensitive sense of smell, and have a natural sense for cleanliness, they will rarely spoil or soil an area, especially where they sleep or live

unless they cannot help it. Below are tips on how to housetrain a dog: Mark the toilet area Carry your dog outside first thing when he wakes up in the morning so that he does not eliminate upon touching the floor. Give him time to sniff around so he could find a place where he will be comfortable doing his thing, and once he does it, shower him with praises so that he knows that particular spot is his ‘toilet’. Clearly mark a living area You have to give your dog its own little area, and it is here that you

can make use of a dog crate. Be advised though that your dog will may not take to the crate immediately you introduce it, you have to do some prior training so it could get used to it. Ensure the crate is just the dog’s size, not too big or too small. For starters, you should cover one side of the crate with waste paper, just in case your dog loses his bowel control. Never shut your dog away from the family, always ensure the crate is placed in a corner within the house, a place where you can easily supervise it. Introduce your dog to the rooms in your house that he will have access to. After your dog masters his living and toilet areas, he will rarely have accidents in other rooms, and it is then that you should open him up to your home, one room at a time. Start shifting his crate from one room to another, while keeping a close eye on him he doesn’t forget and misbehave. The moment he gets comfortable with the rooms, he will start thinking of the space as additional room to his little den. Always love and respect your pet An accident could occur because your dog couldn’t really help it, but it doesn’t mean you should scold or nag him, just treat him with love and respect and talk to him reassuringly. Walk your dog a bit Take time and spend with your dog, walking him around as you wait for him to finish eliminating. By helping him walk around, you will be helping him ease his bowel movement. You need to be very patient as this could take time. When your dog completes his job, he deserves some praise, just as you would when you do something praise worthy. Don’t forget your poop scoop when going out on walks.

‘BloodRun’ arrives in Teesside Back in June 2010, three intrepid motorcycle riders set off from Cleveland in the North East of England on a 3000-mile motorcycle trip around the UK coastline on two very special motorcycles. One was an emergency blood motorcycle on loan from the Whiteknights Emergency Voluntary Service, the other was fitted with recording equipment in order for them to film their journey. In an attempt to raise £10,000 to bring the service to life in Cleveland, they also carried out a number of fundraising initiatives for the Bloodrun. This major achievement was featured on the local TV and gave the group their first big awareness campaign, this soon followed by two bikes being donated by kind - hearted Teessiders.

team set about raising funds and awareness. The 3,000 mile fundraising trip achieved £7,500 and the two VFR motorcycles donations. The group are on a mission to bring the much needed awareness about the Bloodbike service and visit local schools that have included: Elden Grove, Stranton. St Cuthberts, Ward Jackson, Kingsley, St Mary’s and have recently organised a visit to Granegfield and Laurence Jackson On the Monday 6th June 2011 the launch of the Blood bikes took place at The University Hospital of North Tees and Hartlepool, initiating the start of the mission, to bring an emergency blood motorcycle service to Cleveland to ease the burden on the NHS. Steve Basford from Trackside Motors

Jon Formstone and Steve Basford at The University of North Tees Hospital

Maureen Ellison pictured with her Grandson Matthew age 2 sitting on the donated Motorbike One an anonymous retired man and the other being Maureen Ellison from Hartburn, who had heard abut the mammoth task to raise funds for the Blood run service. Maureen’s husband passed away three years ago and had been a keen motorbike rider, not knowing what was going to be the best solution in finding a new owner for his Honda motorbike, Maureen came across the article about the Bloodrun, without hesitation Maureen donated her late husbands bike and the

Thornaby said: “Our mission is to serve the people of Cleveland by continuing to provide an emergency motorcycle service to transport urgent and non-urgent medical items on behalf of the NHS. We currently cover Stockton and Hartlepool and are delighted to be launching this much needed service.” Mark Say, Jon Formstone and Steve Basford volunteered their time to promote awareness of an incredibly important group of volunteer

motorcyclists who deliver blood and other vital items out of hours for NHS hospitals and medical centres. These compassionate Motorcycle riders are funded purely by donations from the public and local businesses. This allows funds from the NHS to go straight back in to patient care. The volunteers are on call from 7pm to 7am 365 days-a-year including weekends! Weather dependent of course, motorcycles don't really like snow!! The trio heard about Blood bikes via Whiteknights EVS, which is a registered charity, providing the Bloodrun in the Yorkshire area and met up with the group to bring Bloodbikes to Teesside. Mark Say said: “Please support us as much as you can and please get in touch if you feel you can

Blood Run launch day at Trackside Motorcycles

Blood Runners bring anything to the cause” (including becoming a volunteer rider.) “We have had our ups and downs since we decided to set up the Bloodrun in Cleveland, to offer a service which we hope will save the NHS thousands of pounds a year. At some points it’s looked as though despite everyone’s hard work, that the service would struggle to take off. It’s been very difficult to get to where we are today, bikes, riders, raising money, getting the bikes kitted up, speaking with the NHS, gaining sponsors, and various other things such as

keeping the team motivated whilst waiting for a launch date, because we did wait, and wait and wait, well, we finally got the news we were all waiting for, our going live date!” The National Health Service does not have unlimited resources. One area that is very costly to the NHS is courier services. Most hospitals operate an internal courier service to ferry diagnostic specimens, blood, notes, x-rays, scans and other medical equipment between themselves and other hospitals in the area. These services generally operate during office hours, which means that

in the evening and at weekends the hospitals need to make alternative provision for items that need to be transported there and then. Blood bikes will do this for free, saving the NHS thousands of pounds annually. Whiteknight EVS are staffed entirely by volunteers, that depend entirely on public sponsorship and donations. This new service operating in Teesside will saves the NHS thousands per year. This saving will go back to the NHS for patient care. The Whiteknights EVS operates throughout the UK and can meet at boundary lines to

continue a safe delivery of blood to varying areas. Now Steve, Jon and Dave have got the bikes fixed up, signed up and ready, Mark is polishing up the website and many others are also helping to grease the wheels in preparation for the people of Cleveland, who will benefit from this amazing service. Hopefully none of you will ever need it, but, rest assured if you do, they will be there! Ridewell event returns to Preston Park Returns to Preston Park, on Sunday 10th July 2011. With a range of attractions including: The Imps, Swan Yamaha Superbike Team, Newcastle Harley Davidson, Triumph North East and the Trials Arena. Live music will be provided by local band 101 Starting at 10:00am until 5pm. The eleventh Ridewell looks forward to being back to its traditional venue at Preston Park this year and whilst last years event at Wynyard Hall was as successful as previous years, Ridewell will move back to its

traditional venue, where it was held for the first nine years of its existence. Alongside the many attractions, the rider and driver development and education programmes linked to the event are hoped to continue to reduce the region’s biker casualty toll. In 1999 when the event was first launched, there were eight motorcyclist fatalities. In 2010 that number had been reduced to just one. Ridewell Co-ordinator Sergeant Paul Dee, from the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit, said: “Every year we hope that

the education side of Ridewell will help to save lives. This is the main aim of the event as well as hoping that everyone enjoys the day. “This year we hope to attract the same high numbers as usual. Our range of attractions includes, The Imps, Swan Yamaha Superbike Team, Newcastle Harley Davidson, Triumph North East and the Trials Arena. Live music will be provided by local band 101. Observed rides and drives and children’s fairground rides will provide a great day out for any family.” Visitors that want to

take part in observed rides and drives are being urged to book as early as possible because the schedules always fill up quickly. There are some excellent prizes for those that come out top of the class. This can be done by emailing: observedrides@cleveland. pnn.police.uk . The Swan Yamaha Superbike Team will be attending the event with their full race truck together with the crew and riders. Their bikes will be on display throughout the day for everyone to see.

Fuel prices driving buying patterns Eighteen per cent of drivers are choosing a more fuel efficient car in attempts to mitigate the rising cost of fuel. In a survey of 2,500 people by the Institute of Advanced Motorists, 80 % of drivers also said they had changed their driving behaviour to save fuel. Other changes in behaviour include: • Making fewer journeys (38.1%). • Walking shorter journeys they previously would have driven (34.54%). • Using public transport more (21.48 %). • Cycling shorter journeys they would previously have driven (19.19%). • Buying a more fuel-efficient car (18.08%). Drivers are not keen to give up their cars completely 74 % were against this idea, but more than half said they stick to

the speed limit to keep fuel consumption down, and more than 70 % check their tyre pressures regularly. Turning off the air-con and emptying the car of unnecessary clutter were also popular methods. IAM director of policy and research, Neil Greig said: “The days of cruising the motorway at 80mph, regardless of the cost, are over. With rocketing fuel prices it is clear that drivers are changing their behaviour, which is good for their health and the environment. “For millions of motorists driving is a necessity, not a luxury. Rural drivers especially need their cars for work, socialising and family life. If drivers can reduce their car usage that’s great, but for those who can’t, driving as economically as possible is the answer.”

Motor Insurance Investigation The Parliament's Transport Committee has agreed to re-open an inquiry into the cost of motor insurance. The decision comes in the light of further concerns about the rising cost of premiums. Some motorists, particularly younger drivers, are finding that the cost of their insurance outweighs the purchase price of their car. The committee has called Jack Straw MP to give evidence, following his research into the issue.

Committee chair Louise Ellman MP said “Motorists continue to suffer as premiums increase and there is mounting evidence that the insurance industry itself is part of the problem. "Jack Straw’s research is a powerful contribution to the debate and as well as hearing what he has to say I will want to hold the insurance industry and the Government to account”. The meeting will take place in the autumn, date to be announced, and other witnesses will be called.

Banks £5 Billion for PPI claims Banks are bracing themselves for a stream of claims from owners claiming they were mis-sold payment protection insurance (PPI) when taking out loans to buy cars. More than £5 billion has been set aside by banks for possibly millions of PPI compensation claims. PPI policies are supposed to cover repayments on loans if someone falls ill, has an accident or loses their job. Consumer organisations protested for years that car buyers and others were duped into believing PPI was obligatory. Thousands have already protested over mis-selling and been compensated. New EU rules allow cancellation of a PPI within 14 days. Antonio Horta-Osorio, the new boss at Lloyds Bank Group (41% owned by the UK government), announced a £3.2bn provision for PPI claims. Its Black Horse division, Britain’s biggest specialist car loan provider, would not give an estimate of likely compensation claims, and neither have

other banks. Which? campaigned for change, saying banks were profiteering because adequate protection was widely available elsewhere. Now large numbers of lenders say their PPI claims are being rejected and that clauses in agreements were not explained properly to them. The industry has lost a crucial court battle. The British Bankers’ Association will not appeal after the High Court ruled that banks had to obey the new rules of the Financial Services Authority (FSA). This requires them to go back over their past sales to see if customers have a claim for mis-selling. The FSA has said banks would have to pay up to £4.5bn to settle claims, but this is thought to be an underestimate. The Financial Ombudsman Service received 100,000 PPIrelated complaints last year and is still getting around 5,000 complaints a week.

Prince’s Trust Team transforms wasteland into a community allotment An allotment for South Bank residents to learn to grow their own vegetables is now up and running thanks to nine young people who are taking part in a youth programme run by Cleveland Fire Brigade. The Prince’s Trust Team Course runs for 12 weeks in the Redcar and Cleveland area, and is designed to engage young people aged 16 - 24, helping to develop key skills such as leadership, team working, problem solving and discipline as well as providing an insight into community safety and citizenship. People are referred to the course through local organisations such as Connexions, Job Centre Plus and Youth Intervention Services. The Team handed over the allotment on Skippers

Defence of the realm A remarkable book which details the role Middlesbrough has played in defending the country over the last century has been published. Years of painstaking research have gone into creating the Middlesbrough volume of Defence of the UK. The fascinating work was put together by volunteers from the North Yorkshire and Cleveland 20th Century defence study group. The group surveyed, verified and recorded all sites in Middlesbrough that contributed to the defence of the realm in the 20th century. Examples of key sites highlighted in the book include Middlesbrough Dock which played a major role in the transportation of war material, including exporting 542,000 tons of coal, iron and steel in 1938, and Middlesbrough Dockyard which from 1940 built hundreds of wartime vessels. The book also has an enormous amount of detail of how war impacted in the communities of the town including the basing of heavy anti-aircraft guns in Brambles Farm and Saltersgill and community air raid shelters in North Ormesby Market Place and what is now Centre Square. The origins of the book stem from 1995 when a committee of representatives from the Imperial War Museum

Mayor Ray Mallon with Stuart McMillan and the Royal Commission on Historic Buildings launched a national programme to record all physical evidence of the defence of the United Kingdom. A group led by John Harwood, from Glaisdale, was set up to cover the area of the old North Riding of Yorkshire, which includes Middlesbrough. As well as surveying existing sites data was collected through

archives, media reports, studying aerial photographs and obtaining witness accounts. Research and writing was led by John Harwood with graphic design and photography taken by Stuart McMillan. Mr Harwood said: “The Middlesbrough volume through its analysis of structures and systems provides for posterity a record of the significant role played by the town in

the defence of the realm during the 20th century. “The recording of this hugely important part of our history is becoming ever more important as the memories and physical structures slowly erode completely.” To mark the help the group have had from Teesside Archives a copy of the book was handed over to the Mayor of Middlesbrough Ray Mallon at the archives, based in Exchange Place.

Lane, to local youth service Kidz Konnekt, at a presentation last week after renovating it for two weeks as part of a community project. Local business, Marshalls of Eaglescliffe, supported the challenge by donating paving and Jewsons on Lawson Industrial Estate also helped by giving reduced prices on other building materials. Abby Burton, Princes Trust Team Leader said: “They worked really hard, not only to transform what was a piece of wasteland into a community allotment, but also by raising the money so they could do it. This included bag packing in a local supermarket and, running a tombola and a name the bear competition at a Brigade open day. They raised a fantastic £700.

“The group have another six weeks left with us where they will be going on work placements, will get help writing their CV’s, practice interview techniques and face a team challenge working with a local community group. During the course they also work towards gaining a City and Guilds qualification and also learn key skills. “The next Prince’s Trust Team Course will run in September, anyone in the Redcar area who would be interested in taking part or would like more information can contact me on 01642 777640. It’s a great way to learn new skills, give something back to the community and have fun at the same time.”

Billingham man admits tipping in Thornaby A Billingham man must serve 120 hours community service and pay £537 in costs after pleading guilty to fly tipping. Ian Caygill, aged 30, of Grange Avenue, Billingham, pleaded guilty to a charge of fly tipping waste on 4th September 2010 outside the premises of Toys Direct Limited, a business based on Sadler Forster Way, Thornaby. Police officers happened to be patrolling the area at the same time when they heard a loud bang and went to investigate what had happened. The police saw Caygill and another man had just dumped dozens of bags of rubbish from a Ford Transit tipper van, by a fire escape at the side of an industrial unit. The police told Caygill and his accomplice to put the waste back on his tipper van and take it away, which they did. They then informed Stockton Council’s Neighbourhood Enforcement Team, who took the decision to prosecute Caygill as the owner of the tipper van. The sentence reflects the large amount of waste involved, the fact Caygill did not hold a valid waste carrier’s licence at the time of the offence and the potential harm to the local environment. In mitigation, Caygill said he had cleared up the rubbish when asked to by the police officer. He

said he normally deals in scrap metal but, on this occasion, received a telephone call from a friend asking him to dispose of waste, which he accepted was dumped illegally. Because of his guilty plea, Magistrates reduced the sentence from 180 hours community service. Commending the police officers concerned, Councillor Steve Nelson, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Safety, said: “Had these officers not intervened, this man’s actions would have caused considerable inconvenience to a local business, which would then have had to arrange for it to be disposed of properly. “His act was deliberate and, looking for financial reward, he showed complete disregard for waste disposal procedures designed to protect the

environment.” “Stockton Council works very hard to keep the Borough clean and tidy so it is a pleasant environment for our residents. I am very pleased with this outcome as fly-tipping destroys these efforts and will not be tolerated. “We will do everything in our power to catch flytippers and will work with our partner organisations to prosecute anyone who illegally dumps waste. “The Council’s neighbourhood enforcement team has recently increased its efforts to crack down on fly tipping – it is a crime and we will take action to prosecute fly tippers whenever we can. I would urge anyone who witness crimes of this nature in Stockton Borough to contact our enforcement team on (01642) 528439”

George Hardwick Foundation opens new doors in Stockton This year is the 10th anniversary of The George Hardwick Foundation - set up in memory of local footballing legend who died in 2004. In that time the registered charity has supported more than 5,000 carers in Stockton and, in 2007, extended its support services with the opening of the North Tees Centre for Carers and Patients. They have now moved into spacious premises at Wellington Square Stockton. Centre manager Ingrid Brough-Williams said: “The location is ideal. Being in the town centre means easy access. “A lot of services are by appointment only, they have to be, but the

location means people can just drop in to find out what we can offer.” With the opening of the fully integrated Carers & Patients Centre in Wellington Square, Stockton. They are working with a number of partners to develop the centre, which is much bigger, more modern and have lots more facilities than the beloved building that has housed them for 10-years on Bishopton Lane. When the Circuit visited the new premises, staff from Poppy’s hair salon were in attendance, volunteering their hair cutting services to passers by, in return for a donation to the Foundation. The George Hardwick Foundation has

developed a core range of services to support carers. They are currently working on a number of new projects, which they have developed in partnership with other local organisations. There’s also The Dignity Project, which has been developed in partnership with North Tees Hospital and is jointly funded by North Tees NHS Foundation Trust and The Strategic Health Authority. In essence, the project (which is currently being piloted at North Tees Hospital) uses volunteers in an acute setting to provide support to patients on the end of life pathway and their families / carers. It is a totally innovative project, the first of its kind in the UK.

School kids in local area tidy up Youngsters from a Middlesbrough primary school showed their green credentials by leading a major community clear-up. The pupils from Breckon Hill Primary rolled up their sleeves and removed litter and other debris from the area around the

school on Tuesday 14th June. The children staged the litter pick after registering to hold a ‘Big Tidy Up’ event in their local community. A team from Middlesbrough Council was on hand with

information and advice to help people recycle more. The youngsters also helped to spread the recycling message to parents as they collected them from school with a survey of recycling habits and a pledge to recycle more for Middlesbrough.

When Julie Axford & Tina Hewitt walked into the Cricket Club at Guisborough in January 2009 to join Slimming World they had never met but had two things in common - they were both carers and wanted to lose weight! Julie’s husband was in intensive care. When she tried to visit she had problems getting to see him as the lift was broken and she struggled to get up the stairs! Eventually making it and almost needing to hospitalise herself in the process she found him tied up to the machines and felt it so unfair that he, who never smoked and was not overweight, was so ill and suffering from chronic lung and bronchial problems, yet she was a size 30 and weighing 19st 11lbs and heading for major health problems of her own making! She realised that, as she was already a carer for her mother she needed to be fit and healthy to also be able to care for him and look after her two daughters. So decided to do something about it and lose weight! One of Tinas’ three children was her 4year old son who is autistic, as his mother and carer she realised that she would have to be there for him for the rest of his life. Being overweight for the past 12 years had caused her mobility problems and she was finding it difficult to care for him properly, so decided to do something about it. So joined Guisborough Slimming World, on that first morning they did not

Top left: Julie before and (right) Tina before, bottom left: Julie 8 stone lighter (right) Tina 5 stone lighter know anyone in the group and were feeling very nervous. Jean the consultant greeted them to help make them feel welcome and put them at ease. They sat with a group of new members and Jean explained the great choices of healthy food they could eat then she sat Julie and Tina together. They hit it off straight away and found they had a lot in common, as they were both carers and a firm friendship started. They both felt the group made them very welcome. As the weeks went by they found the members of the group so lovely, friendly and supportive,

“ they are now like a big caring family,” with lots of fabulous recipe ideas on how to fit in slimming, tasty, healthy meals which all their family could share. And Tina found extra help from another member of the group whose grown up son has autism. Julies’ life is now vastly different having lost 8st 2.5lbs. She loves to go shopping for clothes size 14 not 30. She is fitter, healthier and much more active, stairs don’t phase her now, she runs up them, swims at the baths and has taken up running having joined a running group. All her family now

benefit from the recipes and meals they share, even her aunty has lost some weight with the evening meals she takes her from the Slimming World recipes. The kids and her husband’s favourites are dinners they share together and the pitta pizza’s she makes. Last December Julie was 40 and it was her slimmest Christmas since she was 12 years old. Tina’s now lost 5 stones and her life has changed so much. She got the confidence to marry her long term partner last September and had a fabulous wedding on the HMS Trincomale in Hartlepool followed by a wonderful honeymoon in Egypt, she believes none of this would have happened without the weight loss. Julie (now her best friend) was matron of honour and the friendship sometimes enables them to make time for themselves with nights out and breaks away with their husbands. She is now much more mobile and recently started Zumba to help with fitness and is not worried any more that she will be unable to care for her son. This great achievement comes during national carers week which was 13th -19th June. Slimming World meet at Guisborough Cricket Club every Thursday 3 sessions to choose from. Morning 9.30am, Evening 5pm & 7pm. For more information contact Jean: 01642 293472 or 07792 049496

Work Programme The Governments initiative ‘The Work Programme’ came into force during June. This programme replaces Flexible New Deal (FND) and associated programmes. It is intended to get Britain back to work. What the regional and national press have not yet picked up on is the fact that hundreds of people currently employed in the welfare to work sector, could lose their jobs as the new Work Programme can not afford to employ the current staff on FND. In the next issue of the Circuit we will cover a report about the Work Programme and the impact on local jobs, service users and local business.

BUSINESS

Toast to success The love of cooking and a return to work after having family, brought two Middlesbrough women to start a joint business venture. Shelleen Wardel has always enjoyed cooking and has worked in catering for a number of years, the past few being head cook at a local public house. Tracy Walker a qualified hair dresser and beautician wanted her own business to suit her demanding family life. So the two partners decided that opening a cafe and beauty salon was just up their street. Since January of this year, the couple searched for premises throughout Teesside, came up with a business plan, marketing ideas, cash flow forecast and invested their time and energy when in April, they found the perfect location at 2 Thornaby Place, overlooking the river Tees.

Shelleen told the Circuit: "These premises are a fantastic choice, as we are able to section off the beauty service from the food area, but by having the one entrance our customers have a choice of services they can use, we even have free Wi-Fi and free parking facilities." Their company name 'Toast' applies to both tanning and food so sits perfectly for the description of the business. Fresh, locally sourced ingredients are used in the preparation of foods, hot and cold snacks, halal chicken and a variety of beverages can be eaten/drank on the premises or taken away, plus an advanced order/delivery service is also available on orders taken before 11.30am. Toast also offers an external catering service, from an elaborate meal for two, through to a

Handcyclist Karen’s ‘Fit 2 Wheel’ tour, sponsored by B Braun, began at The James Cook University Hospital. During the four-day tour, which is raising funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Karen will also call at the Spinal Injuries Centre at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield where she was herself treated before finishing at the Princess Royal Spinal Cord Injuries Centre at Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital. Yorkshire-based health care company B. Braun Medical Ltd the UK arm of global healthcare company B. Braun Medical is Karen’s sponsorship partner for the Fit 2 Wheel tour and approximately 20 Braun employees are taking to their bikes to join her during various stages of the event. At the Golden Jubilee Regional Spinal Injuries Centre, based at The James Cook University Hospital, Karen delivered a message to patients that “fun, adventure and physical fitness are all still possible.” The 39-year-old was left

Karen recently delivered her best results to date taking two silver medals at the Paracycling Road World Cup in Australia and then gold in the Piacenza International Paracycling Cup in Italy, all less than a year after being accepted into the British Cycling Academy squad. She is also a popular motivational speaker on subjects including overcoming challenges and embracing change. Karen said: “The tour is an ideal opportunity to combine my ambassador work with B. Braun, both from a staff perspective

and also given the relevance of the number of B. Braun products that can help on a daily basis with some fundraising for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. “During the talk in Middlesbrough I shared some stories of adventures that have been possible since I was paralysed cycling, kayaking and in particular some great 'wilderness' adventures like sit-skiing across the Greenland icecap. “I hope it might just trigger a spark for a different perspective on life for patients facing the initial challenges of paralysis so they can see that fun, adventure and

physical fitness are all still possible.” A previous winner of Cosmopolitan magazine’s ‘Ultimate Fearless Female’ title, Karen became an ambassador for B. Braun Medical last year. Hans Hux, Group Chief Executive of B. Redcar Athletic U12 and U14 Girls at Blackpool IMS Tournament In June Redcar Athletic had both their u12 and u14 teams participating in the Blackpool 7 aside Tournament. Both teams played five group games each. Ian Enderwick said: “The u12's started off with a 3 - 0 victory over Cramlington Utd with our scorers Chloe Copeland, Mia Brannigan and Ellie Gordon then followed up with a 2 nil defeat to Streton Swifts and a 4 nil victory over Crow Newlaithes with Mia Brannigan netting twice and Kelsey Pattison and Chloe Copeland with the other 2 goals. Our u14's started off with a 2-0 victory over Cramlington with Emily Fewster and Gabrielle Wordsworth on target and then a 2-1 win over Leicester with Gabrielle and Ellie Turner scoring, we then finished the day off with a nil nil draw against Lumley Ladies.” “After a red hot Saturday, we were quite

RAu12 girls with coaches Jamie and Roy relieved that Sunday was a lot cooler and our u12's started the day off sluggishly, with a 3-0 defeat to Mill Lane Utd and a 1-0 loss to group winners Cestria, which meant we were in the plate competition finishing 4th in the table. Our u14's started off with a 1-0 win over Bishop Auckland with a fine finish from Beth Enderwick and a nil nil draw with Barnsley A which meant that our girls finished top of the group and went into the cup competition. In the quarter final our

u12's beat Stockton Town 4-0 with Ellie Gordon scoring twice and 1 each for Shannon Higgins and Kelsey Pattison, they then met Ashington in the semi final and won 2-0 thanks to excellent finishes from Ellie Gordon and Kelsey Pattison. They then met Lumley ladies in the final and in a close game just edged a 1-0 win thanks to a Chloe Copeland finish well done to the coaches and all the girls. Then it was our 14's turn to try and emulate the 12's success, because we won our group we went

straight into the semi final were we played Lumley A and in a tense game no one could break the deadlock and so onto the dreaded penalties were we progressed to the final, thanks to 4 well placed penalties from Ellie Turner, Alice Clements, Gabrielle Wordsworth and Georgia Elliott and 2 fine saves from Lois Harkin.

So onto the Final where we met Bishop Auckland and in another stalemate the dreaded penalties were needed to settle it, but this time Lady Luck deserted us and we lost 3 nil, but well done to the coaches Steph, Ian and Lewis and all the girls who did us proud and gave us a fabulous weekend to remember forever.

a terrific competitive atmosphere. “Although we were graced with clear skies and sunshine, on both days the riders had to fight against a strong headwind on the outward runs, which surprised many. “We were delighted with the turnout this year undoubtedly, the easy-toaccess Teesside location was a particular attraction for people, as was the fast nature of the course. “It was a very memorable weekend which produced some exceptional performances and everyone really enjoyed themselves. We would once again like to thank all the event sponsors for their marvellous support.” The event sponsors were: Michelin Tyres,

Qatar football World Cup 2022 - By John Smith part 2 In our first part of this look at the merits of Qatar being awarded the staging of the 2022 Football World Cup Finals, which was featured in the last issue of the Circuit. I looked at the apparent legacy that the technological innovations in the building of new stadia would bring to sport and the world in general, these were all very positive. To now look at Qatar itself and what benefits this would bring to the Gulf State country itself there are also very many positives. For a country that is approxiately the size and shape of the County of Yorkshire there is only one major city, DOHA and the population is tiny at

Cooperation Council (GCC) and is already regarded as the financial centre for all the Gulf states in the region. The city of Doha itself has already been developed on a massive scale with many beautifull areas, shopping malls, hotels, leisure facilities, beaches, marina’s and a very friendly local population. On the down side currently for some visitors however are some food and drink restrictions, need for taxi’s at all times and last but not least THE HEAT! Make no mistake a visit to Qatar between October – March will be a very enjoyable experience. But, the summer months, particularly when the Football World Cup finals

3. Transport systems, internationally, around the country and in the cities will be amongst the most up-to-date technologically in the world. 4. Immigrant workers are welcomed and desperately needed, not only to work but to become permanent residents. 5. The population is expected to rise to the 4-10 million residents in the coming years. 6. Last, but not least, for the staging of the Football World Cup Finals in 2022 the range and designs for the stadia that are in the planning/design stages has to be seen to be believed. Qatar is located at the centre of the Gulf

approximately 1.7million people, with a large proportion of that being ex-pat workers from all around the World, all working in the extensive Gas and Oil fields offshore to the country. Qatar holds the largest gas field reserves in the world and the finances that this will generate will fund the development of Qatar for many years to come. There is a massive development programme already in place for the country: 1. Numerous roads and motorways projects are underway. 2. At least four or five cities are to be built from the nucleous of the small townships that exist today.

The middlesbrough Athletic Club member created two personal best times for herself in both events. Kirsty took three seconds off her best in a time of 2m:05.72s for the 800m and her new best for the 1500m in a time of 4m:20.90s took her into eighth place in the UK under-23 2011 rankings.
