Lifetime Achievement Award June saw the presentation of Redcar and Cleveland Voluntary Agency Lifetime Achievement Awards evening, held at Gisborough Hall. Where a surprised Jack and Ellen Else were presented with an award for their 30 years volunteer service at Teesside Hospice. Jack and Ellen were awarded with an inscribed clock after being nominated by Teesside Hospice because of their pioneering work on behalf of the Hospice. They were two of the first volunteers who helped fund a Macmillan Nurse for Middlesbrough after seeing an advert in the local paper and began raising money through jumble sales and barn dances. Once they helped raise enough to pay for a Macmillan Nurse it was decided a second Nurse was needed. From there

they began meetings with the local NHS to secure funding in order to start the Hospice. They went on to volunteer in the first charity shop based at the Hospice and then in the Marske Charity Shop, as well as supporting various fundraising initiatives. They retired in February of this year. Jack and Ellen who were overwhelmed after winning said: “We’re still in complete shock to have won the award, we had absolutely no idea we were even nominated until a couple of days before and to win it is just fantastic! Volunteering is very rewarding and we would encourage anyone who is thinking about getting involved to do so today – it really has been life changing for us.” Russell Smith, Business Development Manager at Peninsula who sponsored

the Lifetime Achievement award said: “There was a lot of serious competition for this award but after careful consideration there was only one winner! Jack and Ellen are an inspiration and the commitment they have shown to Teesside Hospice Lifetime Achievement Award winners Jack and Ellen Else throughout the with Russell Smith, Business Development Manager from last 30 years is Peninsula, the sponsors for the evening unbelievable.” If you would like to find out more about the rewarding role of volunteering for Sunflower memory walk, Sunday 11th Teesside Hospice please September 11am Albert Park Middlesbrough. contact Carole Hughes, Walk in memory of a love one in aid of Volunteer Coordinator on Teesside Hospice £5.00adults, children free 01642 355829 or visit A Sunflower Memory Walk will also be held at www.teessidehospice.org Locke Park, Redcar - same date and time for the latest volunteer Sign up today www.teessidehospice.org vacancies.

Trust launches war on waste campaign South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is challenging staff, patients and members of the public to help save £1 million by identifying and stamping out waste in its hospitals and community health services. The war on waste campaign launch comes a after the trust highlighted that it has to make savings of around £22 million in the current year to compensate for increased costs against a background of reduced income. Director of nursing Tricia Hart is working with chief executive Simon Pleydell to spearhead the campaign. “We all know that the NHS is experiencing unprecedented pressure on budgets and we all have to look at innovative ways of doing more for less money,“ he said. “Cutting the waste we see, using less energy and minimising the use

of other materials will all help us to better manage our difficult financial position. Staff across the trust have already done a lot to work more efficiently but wherever I go people are still telling me we can do more to stamp out the inefficient use of resources, whether that’s staff time, materials or taxpayers’ money.“ One pioneering project, originally intended to reduce pressure ulcers and slips caused by poorly fitting stockings, is going to achieve annual savings of over £70,000 by standardising the antiembolic stockings worn by patients to prevent blood clots. Currently 17 different types and sizes of surgical stockings were used across the trust. Now, thanks to the work of the anticoagulation team, along with manufacturers G&N Medical, a single knee-high stocking, with special anti-slip grips on

the bottom, has been developed and trialled in the neurosciences division and is being rolled out across the trust. Sam Weaver, specialist nurse anticoagulation, said: “This project started as a patient safety issue, but we have been amazed at the savings which will be realised because we will have fewer people having falls or developing sores. Plus, by standardising the stockings are also saving between 80p and £3 per pair. “We are the first trust in the country to be evaluating the new stockings, which have been developed with us. We are being closely watched by surgical teams up and down the country and expect that what we are doing will eventually be replicated nationwide. It is really exciting to be at the forefront of this work.“

Pier project to feature in art exhibition The word 'community' is the epitome of Saltburn By The Sea; it is why the East Cleveland Education Improvement Partnership's Community Art Project has chosen Saltburn's famous pier as the pedestal for its exhibition. The Pier Project took place on Tuesday 12th July 2011. Where a selection of 24 intricately painted panels completed by 11 East Cleveland Primary Schools, Huntcliff Secondary School and Artist, Abi Mohon.

Each school consulted with their own institution as well as community members on what should be included on their panels (two per school); the brief was for one to depict images of the school itself and the other to represent its local community. Freelance Arist, Abi Mohon, worked with all schools in making final decisions on what should be included on the panels, and then visited each one personally to help them sketch and paint. The project also

coincided with the judging day of Saltburn In Bloom, together with members of Huntcliff's Chinese partner school who were in the area during this time. The partner school, based in the city of Boa Ding near Beijing, was visiting the school and its surroundings for three days as part of an extended visit to the UK. The visitors made their way into Saltburn on the exhibition day and soaked up the sights of the town before heading to the houses of their student

hosts. Huntcliff students will travel to China in 2012 as part of the ongoing partnership. The 26 students and 2 members of staff from Huntcliff's Chinese Partner School (The No. 17 Middle School) in Bao Ding flew over to the UK for their 3-day visit which forms part of a 13 day visit, when the Chinese visitors will also go to London, Edinburgh and York; The visit demonstrated that the partner school experienced a taste of British school culture, as

well as those from both schools being able to form long term friendships. Their packed itinerary included a welcome reception at Saltburn Learning Campus, speeches and presentations followed by a fish & chip supper. The Pier project and a visit to Saltburn Primary Schools. Ending by seeing the final of ‘Huntcliff's Got Talent’ an event that gave Huntcliff students and staff a chance to showcase their talents to an audience and judges.

Seamer gardens went on show An idea by Seamer resident and artist, Margaret Smith, with a purpose to tidy her garden, brought an idea together to stage ‘Seamer on Show’ with the local community behind it the last weekend in July ended up very special. Setting off the weekend

was a flower Festival at St Martin’s Church, followed by a number of private gardens being open to the public with lots of fun attractions. An Art trail was added which featured members of Leven Arts, Cleveland Arts, Viridian Art Group, as well as some of the areas most

successful Artists, namely Colin Swinton, Andrew Walker, Betty Ditcher, Rob Taylor and Alan Morley. With plenty of games and activities for all the family, BBQ, a ladybird trail and lamb feeding provided a great opportunity to raise funds

for charity and bring the local community together.

Fabergé Story In 1917 with the overthrow of the Tsar the Russian State went in to Carl Fabergé’s factory and took everything. They confiscated his stock of eggs, diamonds and buildings and took all the paperwork and sketches and working drawings. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1992 Nikolai Shaidullin a Russian General bought the factory Alfa in St Petersburg. He expected that there had to be some value in the old drawings and sketches; and sent his staff out to look for the drawings that had been confiscated all those years ago. They eventually found 80 drawings in archives, why they are able to be the only factory in the world that is able to produce original designs by Carl Faberge. These designs have been validated by the Russian expert Valentine Skurlov who is attached to the Culture Minister of Moscow and valuer to Christies.

Pupils getting greener Pupils from Bydales School, Marske took a real hands-on artistic residency with artist Bethan Maddocks to explore local nature reserve Coatham Marsh, Redcar. Team work to support older or vulnerable patients A unique partnership is being launched with the WRVS to help improve hospital support for older patients and the vulnerable. Over the years, the WRVS has been one of the trust’s most valued supporters, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds through its popular tea bar and shop for patients, carers and staff.

The money has been spent on various pieces of equipment but their latest donation a massive £35,000 is being put towards something different To reflect current changes in the health service to move care closer to patients’ homes, the money will part-fund a pilot project offering a new model of patient support service.

Councils ask ‘where should new homes go’ The four Borough Councils of Redcar and Cleveland, Middlesbrough, Stockton and Hartlepool are asking for residents’ views on where new housing should be built in the future. Some sites are already

earmarked for possible development up to 2021. However, an ever-growing population with changing needs means the Boroughs will require over 10,000 new homes between 2021 and 2028. New homes could be spread amongst several of

the identified sites or concentrated on a small number. On some sites, although they may be technically suitable, development may not be desirable. A simple consultation document outlines the possible sites, explains the

‘pros and cons’ at each and asks for comments on which are the most suitable. So Councils are asking for as many residents as possible to spend just a few minutes of their time to help shape the areas future.

PREPARE TO BE SHOCKED BY HOW GOOD STAGECOACH WORKSHOPS CAN BE It is wonderful how a group of young people aged 4-8yrs or 8-16yrs, who can be strangers to one another, can pull together in a week to create a piece of musical theatre that will amaze its audience, with its quality. Long-term friendships can be formed and self-esteem and confidence grow with those friendships, leaving a lasting benefit – for only a week’s commitment.

Alma and Sue - patient John Blackburn (front) with wife Barbara and staff on the renal unit at James Cook. John and his wife are from Stainton Lifelong friends Sue Barker and Alma Fox have proved they really are a dynamic duo - by raising more than £12,000 for kidney patients. The pair recently trekked more than 60 miles along the Great Wall of China as part of a series of fundraising events for South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Sue of Leyburn wanted

to do something to support the trust’s renal day unit because her 33year-old daughter has been diagnosed with kidney problems. She also lost her husband to kidney disease 27 years ago. While the pair are no strangers to taking on charity challenges, their latest expedition really put them through their paces.

The money raised will purchase two infusion pumps (drips) for the renal day unit and other vital equipment. Consultant in nephrology, Dr Jonathan Louden, said: “We’re all flabbergasted at the amount raised - it’s absolutely fantastic and will go a long way to helping kidney patients in the unit. We can’t thank Sue and Alma enough.“

Doctors to tackle Coast to Coast in memory of David

clinical perfusion scientist Andrew Heath, consultant in renal medicine John Main and cardiothoracic surgeon Simon Kendall, front consultant in diabetes and endocrinology Simon Ashwell. A team of hospital doctors will tackle a gruelling one-day coastto-coast ride to fund much needed research into a rare medical condition. Simon Ashwell, a consultant in diabetes and endocrinology at The James Cook University Hospital, tragically lost his son, David, to a very rare congenital condition known as Alveolar

Capillary Dysplasis (ACD) in March. David became seriously ill just 48 hours after he was born and died at only 15 days old from ACD, for which there is currently no treatment. It involves abnormal development of the capillary vascular system around the alveoli of the lungs and while babies with ACD may appear normal at birth, within

minutes or hours they develop incurable respiratory distress. Next month, Simon along with his hospital colleagues John Main (consultant in renal medicine), Richard Cree (consultant in intensive care), Andrew Heath (clinical perfusion scientist), Mike Foley (consultant cardiothoracic anaesthetist) and cardiothoracic surgeon

Simon Kendall with his son Thomas, will cycle from Morecambe to Whitby. Their 125-mile plus coast-to-coast ride will raise money for the ACD Research Fund at the National Organisation for Rare Disorders (NORD) to fund the next ACD research grant to support research into this rare and fatal disease. The funds in NORD

have been predominantly raised by the parents of ACD infants worldwide who are all members of the ACDA - The Alveolar Capillary Dysplasia Association. ACDA is a group of parents throughout the world who have experienced the tragedy of the death of a baby due to the condition. Its purpose is to gather and share information, provide a supportive environment to families and encourage research related to ACD. Simon said: “This is a devastating and fatal illness which my wife and I sadly experienced in March of this year when our baby died at two weeks old. It’s very rare there are a lot of unanswered questions even to the extent where we don’t know to what extent the disease is inherited or sporadic - so the money raised will go towards medical research. “We’ve been in contact

Simon and his wife Amelia kindly provided a photograph of their son David to be published. with parents across the world whose children have, universally, died from this and much more needs to be done to find out why?” Simon and many of his NHS colleagues are keen cyclists and all of the team taking part in the ride cycle form their homes in Stokesley, Great Ayton and Potto to the Middlesbrough hospital while Thomas cycles to university.

The cyclists will get on their bikes on the weekend of 10/11 September (day to be determined by the weather) and the ride is expected to take between eight and nine hours. Nagar Kirtan success in Middlesbrough A Sikh festival spreading the messages of love, happiness and peace took place in Middlesbrough. Sikhs from across the UK joined the local community and people from other faiths in the celebration. The Nagar Kirtan procession travelled from the Lorne Street Sikh Temple to Centre Square to encapsulate speeches, the singing of hymns, martial arts displays, face painting and free food which was provided by the Sikh community. This was primarily a religious event but people of all religions and races were invited to attend. Over 1000 people attended including Sikhs from temples in

Members of Middlesbrough Rotary Club with the children from Belarus

Thornaby, Darlington, Sunderland, Newcastle, South Shields and Middlesbrough and local dignitaries. The origins of the Nagar Kirtan go back many hundreds of years when processions would take

place through the towns and villages of India. Minstrels would play music and hymns would be sang. The festival also helps raise awareness of the teachings of Sikhism and how these teachings

integrate in society today. The procession has been supported by the Middlesbrough Community Cohesion Partnership, Cleveland Police and the armed forces.

Albert Park in Middlesbrough was host to 24 children from Belarus who were made ill from the fallout from the Chernobyl disaster. The group of 24 youngsters enjoyed the park’s facilities as guests of Middlesbrough Rotary Club, which organises the annual visit. They used facilities including the swan boats and roller skating rink before having a bite to eat at the park’s Visitor Centre. The scheme, run nationally by the Chernobyl Children’s Life

Line, has been running for 11 years, offers the youngsters a month’s holiday in England to build up their strength.

All will suffer in later life from the after-effects of the 1986 disaster, their average life span being just 48 years.

Give and Gain points with Red Cross British Red Cross shop customers in Hartlepool, Redcar and Guisborough can now earn points for the pounds they spend. The humanitarian organisation is introducing a loyalty card to reward supporters who shop regularly with them and to encourage others to get into the habit. The loyalty cards, which the charity has named ‘Give and Gain’ works in the same way as other store loyalty cards. Each time a customer makes a

purchase their card will be swiped through the till to have points added. Every pound spent earns one point and customers will be sent loyalty vouchers in the post. These vouchers can be exchanged for goods from the shop or put towards the cost of taking one of the many training courses offered by the Red Cross. If customers prefer, they can give even more by donating their points back to a Red Cross appeal. The British Red Cross

helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. They are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies. Enabling vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, help them to recover and move on with their lives.

The winning of entries to give Alf and Reg their official names will win a shopping voucher and a special visit to the stables at Ormesby Hall Middlesbrough to meet the horses. Cleveland Police are promoting a free competition to give two police horses their official police names. The horses currently go by their stable names, Alf and Reg, but are in need of their official police names, which will be used for their operational duties and for special events. Examples of official names include Stranton and Mannion. Entrants to the competition have to be aged 16 or under and entries can be submitted at the Cleveland Police website The winners will be

given a shopping voucher and a visit to the stables at Ormesby Hall Middlesbrough to meet the horses. There are currently seven horses in the mounted section. The two that require offical names are: Alf who is a bay horse, aged 11 and 17’ 2“ hands high. He has been with the Force for 3 years and his rider is PC Greenwood. Reg is a dappled grey colour, he is 8 years old 18 hands high, he has been with the Force for 2 years. His rider is PC Lindsley. Inspector Bev Gill, Head

of the Specialist Operations Dog section, Mounted section and ANPR team, said: “The competition is a great way to get young people involved with Cleveland Police and to have a bit of fun at the same time. The names will be the horses’ formal stable and working names, so please give some thought to the reason behind your chosen name.“ The competition runs through to Wednesday 31st August 2011. Many people make assumptions regarding dogs and training, they believe that one dog can be trained just like the other dog, that all breeds can be trained in exactly the same way. I don’t agree with this theory. An important dog training tip to mention is that when it comes to dogs and training, not all dogs are created equal, just like humans and horses. Each dog has their very own unique personality. An experienced trainer once said that small dogs are to be given a different approach to training than the bigger dogs. Basically, smaller dogs are more courageous at heart if not in mind; they have to compensate for their small sizes. While the bigger dogs are just as courageous, but they feel

they do not need to prove it for they already have the size and the power. So if a trainer looks at the quirks of the dog’s personalities, they would know just what technique to use when training the dog. The dog trainer went on to display that not all big dogs are born leaders or Alphas for that matter. There have been a lot of cases where the smallest in the pack is the leader because of their cunning and intelligence. It also helps if the smaller dog raised the bigger dog since it was a pup. The bigger sized dogs bow to their elders, just like any humans. No matter the size, the bigger dog can concede to the reasoning of a smaller dog especially when it comes to stalking. This behaviour can be most observable in a

home with small sized and big sized dogs living in one household. Usually the big dogs are the muscles and the smaller ones are those who think up of ways to manipulate the humans. When it comes to dogs and training, these personalities should be observed before the actual training could begin. There are some dogs that refuse to be trained until they see a smaller and older one doing exactly what the trainer instructs them to do. The big dogs would not want to look stupid in front of the smaller ones so they strive hard to emulate the example of the smaller dogs. Trainers have long since observed that most dogs would learn faster from examples of older dogs. Just like the humans do,

As the £7 million redevelopment of Preston Hall Museum & Park is well underway. There’s some changes being made to areas within the park. A pilot project with the introduction of new trial dog control areas has been implemented. This follows a number of issues raised by general park users and visiting school groups regarding loose dogs and dog fouling and has been created to ensure all visitors can enjoy the facilities of this ever popular site. Signs have been erected throughout the Park to show three clear areas: dogs off lead, dogs on lead and no dogs allowed. Zoned areas for ‘dogs off leads’ include the full river walk, meadow field, lower field and woodland area, while ‘dogs on leads’

includes the Museum drive, front lawn and north field. The ‘no dogs allowed’ area is limited to the newly developed play facility and adjoining picnic area, where fencing is currently being removed to provide a more open and attractive space within the Park. Leaflets are also available to explain the areas and offer people the opportunity to raise comments and suggestions. This trial will run until October when the collated feedback will help shape any future decisions. Councillor Steve Nelson, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Safety, said: “We are fully aware that the majority of dog owners are responsible and respect

the Park and we hope the introduction of this trial will allow everybody to enjoy this popular site and all its attractions. “All Park users can let us have their feedback and suggestions which will help us shape any future decisions at the end of the trial.“ People can email

dans@stockton.gov.uk with comments or hand in comments at collection points in Preston Park. Don’t forget your poop scoop when you are out with your dog, there’s a fine of up to £80 if you don’t clear it up and we all want our parks, beaches and open spaces to be the best in the area.

BBQ safety this summer With the weather warming up, many people will be firing up their barbecues. But pet owners should take extra precautions to ensure their pets stay safe when the heat is on. It's a natural instinct for a dog or cat to hunt for food and resisting the smell of food on a BBQ can be incredibly difficult. Keep an eye on your pets and make sure they stay away from the heat and away from any barbecue scraps that could upset their stomachs.

they learn through observation and example. So do not get frustrated when what workes for one dog does not work for the other. Talk to a trainer and ask for their opinions on dog and training and how best to approach the whole process. Maybe the dog just needs guidance from another dog. It usually does the trick. But do please keep your dog on the lead when you are near horses, especially when you are visiting the local shows over the summer.

Youngsters gain qualifications and skills Seven more young people have gained qualifications and new skills thanks to a course ran by Cleveland Fire Brigade and youth charity The Prince’s Trust. The Prince’s Trust Team programme is a 12-week course which supports 16-25 year olds who have struggled at school, have been in care, are longterm unemployed or have been in trouble with the law. The course gives unemployed young people the skills and confidence they need to find a job. This was the 21st programme ran by the Brigade which coincides with the 35th anniversary of The Prince’s Trust which will be celebrated throughout August. Abby Burton of Cleveland Fire Brigade said: “This course aims to make a difference to the lives of young people within the Cleveland Fire Brigade area and we are fortunate enough to have a great working relationship with both The Prince’s Trust and Stockton Riverside College who support the programme. “It’s a great opportunity

for people to learn new skills and work as a team, and everyone on the course found it thoroughly rewarding. As well as all the group activities, everyone on the course received help in writing their CVs and learning interview techniques, which will help them when applying for jobs in the future. The next course starts in September, if you are between 16 - 25 and would like to find out more please contact 01642 777650.” All of the youngsters have received a City and Guilds qualification as well as Key Skills, and they were presented with a Prince’s Trust Achievement Certificate during a special ceremony last week at Redcar Community Fire Station. Certificates were presented by Councillor Jean O’Donnell, Chair of Cleveland Fire Authority. The group gained knowledge about team building whilst on a week’s residential course at Shining Cliff Centre in Derbyshire where they took part in a range of outdoor activities

including abseiling, caving and raft making. They also spent time at the Brigade’s Learning and Development Centre where they were taught search and rescue skills, learned Heartstart emergency aid and did a one-day IOSH Working

Safely Certificate.

NEWS Eighty soldiers from ‘C’ Company of the 2nd Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment commanded by Major Rich Grieve stepped off from Belmont House, Spring Wood Road at 11.00 am on Wednesday 20th July. They marched via Rectory Lane, New Road, Westgate and Church Street. The parade halted at the Market Place for a ceremony attended by the Mayor, civic dignitaries and hundreds of flag waving onlookers. Not even the down-pour of rain put anyone off. The Regiment were then treated to a welcome cup of tea at Pursglove college. The Regiment are preparing for a summer move to Cyprus where they will become the Theatre Reserve Battalion with troops ready to support on-going operations in Afghanistan. Exercising their Freedoms of Guisborough by marching through the streets provided the

ideal opportunity to say farewell to the towns that are closely tied with the soldiers and their families. The Regiment can trace its roots back to 1685 when first raised for service under James II. It traditionally recruits from across Yorkshire and Teesside. A total of 38 Victoria Crosses have been awarded to the Regiment. Between October 2009 and April 2010, the Battalion served in Afghanistan working closely with the Afghan National Security Forces throughout Helmand province in areas such as Sangin as part of the Operational Mentoring Liaison Team. Their home is Yorkshire and the North East, up to the historic boundary of the River Tees. They recruit soldiers with a strong sense of unity, duty and high sporting prowess from Yorkshire, the North East and all Commonwealth Countries.

The Yorkshire Regiment was formed on 6 June 2006 from the amalgamation of The Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire (14th/15th Foot) The Green Howards (Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regiment) (19th Foot) The Duke of Wellington's Regiment (33rd/76th Foot) and is founded on over 300 years of 'Yorkshire Warrior' tradition. It is united by common values, history and home and represents all that is best in the Army, in professionalism, in role, on operations, for career, for sport and for family. The Mayor of Guisborough Cllr Kilby said he was proud to welcome the regiment to their farewell parade in Guisborough, many of the recruits are from the town and surrounding villages, he wished them a safe operation and continued support from the town.

Did you see it?

The MPI Adventure at PD Ports and inset The 1,000 tonne capacity crane view from A66 It had dominated the Tees Estuary since May, was a talking point amongst motorists. It could be seen from as far as Skelton and beyond! It was the MPI Adventure. PD Ports is the statutory body responsible for the 11 mile industrial stretch of the River Tees out to the Tees Estuary, which received the significant addition to the area in May in the form of the MPI Adventure at Tees Commerce Park. As offshore wind becomes an increasingly important source of renewable energy for the UK, and the construction

and manufacturing of turbines and component parts helps to boost our local economy, the MPI Adventure, which is classified as a ‘wind turbine installation vessel’ (WTIV), made her way up the Tees to Cargo Fleet Wharf, following a maiden voyage from China where she was recently constructed. The newest and largest of the MPI offshore fleet, the Adventure is the world’s most advanced and efficient WTIV with a 1,000 tonne-capacity main crane, accommodation for 112 persons and a maximum

operating depth of 40 metres. With normal vessels, planning and care is taken to observe tides and draught, but because of the size and height of the Adventure more detailed planning had to be involved. It was a tricky feat having to avoid the high voltage power cables and being careful not to catch the seabed, and because of this it took much longer than other vessels to reach the berth. Whilst going up the river the legs had to be lowered and elevated as well as having to wait for the tides to

change to be able to safely continue upstream. PD Ports and MPI worked together and used all their resources to ensure a safe passage. When the Adventure began her journey out of Teesside, she was moved onto London where she will begin the task of installing foundation components for the London Array Offshore Wind farm in the outer Thames Estuary. Paul Gibson, Chairman of MPI Offshore, said: “The arrival and departure of the MPI Adventure on the River Tees was a landmark

event. I am delighted to see the significant progress that is being made in our business to facilitate the installation of offshore wind. The MPI team and I still have a lot of hard work ahead of us to embrace the exciting challenges the offshore wind industry has to offer us.“ The team at PD Ports wishes the MPI Adventure the best of luck on her endeavours in the future and hopes to see many more wind farms erected by this very vessel.

Student voice matters at Prior Pursglove Prior Pursglove College has been recognised as the most improved college in the country for their dedication to listening to their students. The college beat hundreds of entries to achieve the national Leading the Learner Voice Award in the category of ‘Most Improved Provider’ for the progress they have made with raising the profile of Student Voice in college during the course of this year. The awards were presented by Dame Ruth Silver DBE at a special ceremony in London last week. Judy Burton, Principal said: “Winning this LSIS award for being the most improved college is a tremendous accolade, which we are all thrilled about. Having students actively involved in so many aspects of college

life makes Prior Pursglove an even better place to be, and enriches students’ experience of being at college. I am delighted that the huge progress we have made during the last year has been publically recognised in this way.“ Organised by the national Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) in partnership with the National Union of Students, the Leading the Learner Voice Awards attracted more entries this year than they have in previous years, making the competition even tougher. Andrea Booth, Student Liaison Officer said: “The Students’ Union here at Prior Pursglove has been fantastic this year, working tirelessly to improve the college experience for their fellow students and I

Celebrating first anniversary by raising funds

The staff at Norton Glebe Pharmacy has been celebrating the shops first birthday recently. The pharmacy commemorated the event by raising over £600 for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Society for Mucopolysaccharide Diseases (MPS). Ten-year-old Ben Conlin, from Norton, was diagnosed with MPS in 2003, a disease that left him deficient of a vital enzyme that breaks down unwanted sugars. In many cases, MPS causes both progressive mental and physical disabilities and in some instances death in childhood. Luckily, Ben’s strain of illness is now treatable, although there are many others, which are not. MPS fund research so that more children with MPS may one day be as lucky as him. The pharmacy raised the money by holding a tea party all week as well

as a raffle and quizzes with the winning prize being a 32’’ Television. Pharmacy manager, Samantha Thompson, said: “We wanted to celebrate in style by getting the local community and residents involved”. Samantha could not be happier with how the first year of business has gone: “Our first year has really exceeded our expectations and I’d like to thank everyone from Norton and the surrounding areas for their custom and support. “Although it’s only been a year” says Samantha, “the staff and I have got to know so many nice people from the area and everyone keeps saying how glad they are to have a local pharmacy here”. The pharmacy is looking forward to the year ahead and once again would like to thank all their customers for their continued support.

The students continue to talk to the management about college issues, organise fun events, lobby the local council and generally get the Learner Voice heard and the college continues to support them.

I enjoyed attending the ceremony in London to collect the award on behalf of the college.“ Kirstie Kohling Student Manager said: “As a college we are absolutely delighted to have achieved this national award. Both Andrea and myself are privileged to

have worked so closely with students and staff and it shows just what can be achieved when we share our ideas and work together. This just the start of even greater things to come at Prior Pursglove and we are looking forward to another great year.

Town Centre Business Awards are open Entries are now open for the Borough's first ever Town Centre Business Awards which will see shops and eateries in Stockton's town centres recognised for their trading excellence. The panel of expert judges includes NorthEast retail expert Christine Kavanagh, who fronts the Retail Skills Shops which deliver Mary Portas Retail Master classes to businesses, local retail analyst Graham Soult, Leader of Stockton Council Councillor Bob Cook and Stockton Council's Head of Regeneration and Economic Development Richard Poundford. A total of six awards is up for grabs and the winners will each receive £250 at an awards ceremony at Stockton Town Hall on Friday 30th September. Businesses are invited to submit entries in five categories - Eatery of the Year, Independent Retailer of the Year, Market Trader of the Year, National Chain of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. One category will be voted for solely by the public, whose votes will determine the winner of “The Consumers' Town Centre Business of the Year“ award. Entry forms are available from libraries across the Borough and can be downloaded at www.stockton.gov.uk/businessawards

Make Home Choice your choice for flooring When Paul Smith met Billy Cockburn in his Middlesbrough carpet shop, as some say ‘many moons ago.’ Paul did not imagine that all those years ago that he would be taking on the business. Billy took Paul on as a carpet fitter and their business and friendship flourished. Paul at the time lived in Saltburn and Billy in Middlesbrough. Paul worked as a fitter for Billy from his Middlesbrough carpet shop located in Parliament Road for over 10 years. Billy traded in the town for over 41 years and as Paul progressed through his career, eventually took on Billy’s shop when he retired. Paul traded for five years at Parliament Road and later also opened a carpet shop in Marske, this proved that splitting his time between both stores was difficult and therefore Paul sold the

Middlesbrough business. Having continued to trade through the down turn of economic business times, Paul made a decision in 2009 to close the Marske store as, like hundreds of other local business, the rates, rent and overheads were having a negative impact on his business and as Paul, now living in Ingleby Barwick, is a family man with wife Naynie and children Taylor, Holly and Georgie, he concentrated on developing the floor fitting side, but also missed the face to face contact with shoppers. A chance meeting with Billy brought the two businessmen back together in 2011 and the fact that a shop opposite to where they had traded those many moons ago, became vacant. Within weeks of their meeting Paul was planning the opening of 61 Parliament Road,

Do you Dig it! DIG IT Projects is a new innovative business based around ‘Allotment Style Gardens’. It was founded by Richard Smith in August 2008. A local landscaper that saw a need to provide an opportunity for all Schools and Community Groups to have their own ‘Allotment Style Garden’ facility on site, backed up by expert guidance on how to grow fresh produce. Initially approached by the local council to design and install a Community Allotment for a local college, Richard saw the huge benefits and potential in the concept and decided to start contacting other Schools in the area, soon after ‘Dig It Projects’ was born. In November 2009 DIG IT Projects proudly won the Green Business Award, its first of four so far. With stiff competition from three other finalists, all of which had previous awards to their name, larger turnovers and more employees. To follow this in February 2010 DIG IT Projects went on to win Best New Business Award and in December 2010 won Innovative Business. More recently Richard won Exceptional Entrepreneur Award given by the Local Enterprise Growth Initiative (LEGI) LEGI recognised the fantastic progress Richard and DIG IT Projects has

made from starting in 2008 with a £2000 grant to the business today which has developed over 70 different schools and many community groups including private nurseries. Richard said: “The business is literally growing every day and achieving high standards with very positive feedback and many returning schools requesting more work. DIG IT Projects now installs Fitness Trails, Playhouses, Sheds and lots more as well as the original ‘Allotment Gardens’. Training Workshops are fast becoming as popular to help with the knowledge and up keep of the allotments once installed and encourages schools to get children out doors

Best food for fast times When Sharron Aylesbury and Judith Currar were made redundant from their jobs of 24 years and 11 years respectively, at Stockton Borough Council, they both had an ideal idea for a new venture. Sharron has 20 years experience catering for family and friends and Judith’s prior job working within a busy department meant that they both could use their skills and start their own business. Along came an opportunity for a Thornaby café which was up for sale. Shades café opened its doors in July, based on the Gladstone Industrial Estate Thornaby, the premises had previously been a café, but Sharron and Judith have placed their own stamp on it and have redecorated and updated the flooring, bringing warmth, cleanliness and new menu’s for the workers around the Industrial Estate. Club builds for the future with a new clubhouse Supporters of Norton & Stockton Ancients F.C. can now enjoy much improved facilities when the STL Northern League Division One side begins its season campaign. An impressive new clubhouse and changing rooms building was officially opened at the Ancients’ first pre-season match in July. For club chairman Mick Mulligan the construction has been a “labour of love“ but he is proud to see it completed: “Our players and visiting teams and match officials will now be able to prepare in changing rooms that would not look out of place in the Football League. Supporters are able to enjoy food and drink in the licensed

clubhouse and an upstairs room with views over the pitch is available to local businesses wishing to entertain guests on matchdays. “The upstairs room can also be used as a training/community room, suitable for everything from FA coaching courses to women’s keep fit classes. It’s been a real team effort to get the building completed and we’re also very grateful for the financial support of the Football Foundation, the Garfield Weston Foundation, SITA Trust and Tees Valley Community Foundation who have all contributed with much needed financial support.” The new building complements the

Conrad Hillerby Manager, Mick Mulligan Chairman, Tim Turner Vice Chair Ancients’ playing surface, widely regarded as one of the best in the North East, and one which has impressed Darlington F.C. who started to use the Station Road ground as

its training facility. For manager Conrad Hillerby, the pre-season build up is an essential part of preparing for the new season: “The players have been in training for

a few weeks and they’re ready for games now. We’ve arranged specific fixtures to fit in with our preparations and there’s some good tests in there. “We have a good squad to pick from and every player will get his chance. They know that this is their opportunity to impress and make a claim for being in the team when the season kicks off in August.” The Ancients will be starting the new season in confident mood. Since winning promotion to the STL Northern League Division One in 2009, the club has secured two top 10 finishes, as well as reaching the quarter final of the F.A. A special charity match was held on Sunday 7th August at the ground. The match was between a Select VI from Norton Ancients and a multicultural team, mainly African, called Tees Valley United. The Mayor of Stockton, Councillor Paul Baker, kicked the match off. The event has traditionally been held to honour the memory of John Owens, a youngster who died tragically aged just 17 as a result of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. John had volunteered to be part of the Stockton International Family Centre football team; a mixed team of young men seeking asylum. John played an important part as a good team player, and a crucial role in showing what community cohesion is all about. The game has proved to be a

fitting tribute to the unforgettable teenager. Tragically, John’s younger brother, Jamie, also died from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome last year. The match is now held in the memory of them both. Proceeds were in aid if CRY (A charity to raise awareness of Cardiac Risk in the Young). There’s also a charity auction of promises and dinner for Justice First, as many of the players at Tees Valley Unlimited are assisted by the charity, To be held Saturday 3rd September at the Trinity Centre, Middlesbrough. Chris will be sadly missed Suddenly on Wednesday 20th July 2011 Chris Dale, a Director of the North Riding County FA sadly passed away aged 63, ironically he was due to receive his 15 year long service award at the North Riding County FA summer dinner on Friday 22nd July 2011. Chris joined the North Riding County FA Council in 1996 following his work with the York FA and immediately made a massive impact. He soon became a member of the Inter County Competitions committee and after impressing was asked to become Chairman of the Referees committee. With his clear understanding of grassroots football Chris was made a Director in 2001 when the North Riding County FA became a limited company. Tom Radigan the Chief Executive of the North Riding County FA said “Chris was an invaluable member of the both the

Board and Council, doing lots of voluntary work behind the scenes.“ He continued “Chris was instrumental in the improvement of the refereeing structure here at the North Riding County FA chairing the Referees committee for several years.“ ?Ignoring the excellent work Chris has undertaken for referees and refereeing over many years involvement in the game, Chris was a true gentleman, a friend to so many of us and it was a pleasure to spend time in his company. He travelled extensively representing North Riding County FA and was hugely well thought of. He worked tirelessly on behalf of referees and there are many referees, tutors and volunteers who have a lot to thank Chris for. Ross Joyce the Referee Development Officer said “His untimely death is tragic and he will be missed by us all. Needless to say our

Chris Dale thoughts are with Chris’s family at this very sad time.” At the summer dinner on Friday 22nd July at the Riverside stadium Len Scott the Chairman of the North Riding County FA paid tribute to Chris in front of all of his peers. This ended with a minute’s applause to celebrate Chris’s life. Chris will be sadly missed and leaves behind his wife Sue, and 3 children, two sons Stephen and Michael and a daughter Georgina. The funeral took place on Friday 29th July at St Andrews Parish Church, York.

P2P competitors at Clairville Work to improve trackside facilities and disabled access at Middlesbrough’s Clairville Stadium has been completed. The upgrade work at the popular athletics venue included the installation of a trackside shelter for all athletes and spectators and improved access to the track from the main building for disabled people. Outdated bench seating in the main stand has also been replaced as part of the project. Funding from Middlesbrough Council was allocated this year as access for all was

identified as a high priority. The completed work was officially unveiled at a Tees Valley Sport athlete assessment day for disabled athletes as part of the national Playground to Podium (P2P) initiative. P2P is designed to identify and nurture young disabled people with the potential to become elite athletes and performers. The scheme is a collaboration between Youth Sport Trust, Sport England, Paralympics GB and UK Sport and is aimed at young disabled people aged between 12

and 18 years who have previously been identified as having talent by their schools They are given the opportunity to test their skills and abilities in four sports - wheelchair basketball, football, table tennis and athletics - with the athletics session taking place at Clairville. Jean Lordon, Executive Director of Tees Valley Sport, said: “This scheme improves access which then brings the facility up to the 21st century in terms of people being able to participate in athletics and as well as being spectators. “It also enables more

young people with disabilities to engage in sport.“ Councillor Brenda Thompson, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Public Health and Sport, added: “Clairville has been the home of athletics in Middlesbrough for many years, and I’m delighted that this work will see that continue for some time to come. “The facilities are already excellent, and this can only improve the experience of those taking part in sport, and those who have come to watch.“

The lifeboat station was chosen by the captain of Cleveland Golf Club to receive the money, raised during his Captain's Day, held at the famous links course at Redcar on Saturday 25th June. Keith Cooper, club captain, chose the RNLI after a lifetime combining golf with his passion for fishing off Redcar. Keith said: “I've always had an interest in the work of the RNLI volunteers. I've been a fisherman all my life, and I had my own fishing boat for many years. My father had a boat before me. “One day my father nearly called the lifeboat out for me. I was in the only boat off, and the weather turned to a near-gale. As it turned out I was fine and we got back to shore safely.“

Peter Haslett, lifeboat treasurer at Redcar RNLI, said: “We'd like to thank all the golfers at Clevelend Golf Club for supporting our volunteer crews. One or two of the crew play golf themselves, but sometimes they just don't get chance to because they're too busy manning the lifeboats. “The golf course is right next to the sea, and I'm sure some of the players will have seen the lifeboat hurrying past on its way to a rescue.“ The Cleveland golf course was opened in 1887, the same year that the old lifeboat house on the Esplanade at Redcar was built. This now houses the Zetland, the oldest surviving lifeboat in the world.
