Strange things are happening on Coatham Marsh in Redcar. As part of the Green TV project, ‘Mirage’ has been made and sited on the Marsh, as artist Tony Charles’ artistic response to Coatham Marsh, the place, the wildlife and its history. The Mirage sculpture reflects in every sense the surroundings of the Marsh, changing over time with weather and season, prompting visitors to look around them at what is familiar, or strange, or both, and to

Photo by Bob Mitchell think about the complex natural and unnatural history of this environment. Mirage has been developed with the help of the children of Whitecliffe Primary School in Carlin How, Westgarth Primary School in Marske and members of the Redcar and Cleveland community. Joe Dunne, Heritage & Environment Officer at Tees Valley Arts and Green TV Project co-ordinator said “Through the Green TV project we wanted to take

a fresh look at and provide some creative, innovative and enjoyable approaches to the way people engage with their local nature. I feel that Mirage reflects this in every way, not just in the piece of work on site, but also the process that happened during its conception and creation. I hope that many people come and enjoy it, but also and maybe more importantly the environment that surrounds it.” Jeremy Garside, Chief Executive of Tees Valley

Wildlife Trust said “Green TV has allowed us to experiment with completely new ways of interpreting the natural environment and to work outside our usual professional box. We are now not just thinking and talking about new ways of doing things, but actually seeing them happen.”

Stockton market traders present their 10,000 + petition 700 YEARS Traders with Stockton Chief Executive, Neil Schneider and the town Mayor Cllr Colin Leckonby holding the 700 market

Middlesbrough

charter.

Council election winning results are as follows: Middlesbrough Council has an elected Mayor and 48 Councillors elected into office every 4 years. The Borough is divided into 23 wards that elect 48 Councillors, some wards have a single councillor, and others have two or three. There are 2 parishes and there are two parliamentary constituencies. Conservatives 4 seats Independents 12 seats Labour 30 seats Liberal Democrats 1 seat The Green Party 1 seat Middlesbrough’s elected Mayor Ray Mallon has named the members of his new Executive. The move follows the council and mayoral elections which saw Mr Mallon elected to serve a third term.

Handing in the petition -urging the local authority to leave the 700-year-old Stockton market where it is. Over 10,000 people have signed in support of the traders ensuring a full council debate.

Executive portfolios: Deputy Mayor and Resources: Councillor Dave Budd (Lab) Regeneration and Economic Development: Councillor Charlie Rooney (Lab) Social Care: Councillor Barry Coppinger (Lab) Public Health and Sport: Councillor Brenda Thompson (Ind) Community Protection: Councillor Julia Rostron (Lab) Streetscene Services and Transport: Councillor Nicky Walker (Lab) Children, Families and Learning: Councillor Mike Carr (Lab) The full listings of candidates with party represented and the total number of votes can be found on the Middlesbrough Council Election results section of their website.

We shall not be moved

This is the statement from Stockton Market Traders, their passion has been reflected in an amazing 10,000 name petition, which was handed to Stockton Council, urging the local authority to leave the 700 year old market where it is.

Stockton Council election winning results are as follows: Billingham Independents Association 2 Conservative Party 12 Independent 0 Ingleby Barwick Independent Society 6 Labour Party 27 Liberal Democrat 4 Newtown Independent Party 0 Stockton Independents Association 0 Thornaby Independent Association 5 Yarm Independent Association 0 Total: 56 with all wards declared. The full listings of candidates with party represented and the total number of votes can be found on the Stockton Council Election results section of their website.

The petition was launched after suggestions to relocate all market traders to a site south of the town hall as part of a five year £20m revamp of the high street. At the handing over of the petition, Stockton Council’s Chief Executive Neil Schneider has pledged full consultation

on the plan “to make sure people are fully aware of what is being put forward.” He also stated that: “doing nothing is not an option”. The council says the current location could be opened up to create a central square and plaza which would enable the town to host special events, festivals and other speciality markets. Market Traders, along with the support from Stockton’s hackney carriage drivers brought the 10,000 named petition to a special meeting held at the Town Hall on Saturday 7th May. Trader Martin Cain, one of the organisers of the petition said: “Moving Stockton's market would be a mistake.” The possible relocation of Stockton's market has led to a huge protest. If there’s one thing Stockton people are passionate about, it’s their historical town centre market the Queen of the North.” As reported in the April issue of the Circuit, traders and shoppers are outraged at the plan and say it could destroy the famous market, which draws shoppers and stall holders from across the region. The Mason family has worked the market for 100 years, said: “We just want the council to leave the market here. There’s not enough space south of the town hall.

Shoppers are against it moving, and a lot of local shops are supporting us.” Stockton Council stated that ‘moving the market will offer a number of benefits to traders including a significantly enhanced environment/footfall, a less spread out market and more attractive stalls.’ Stockton Chief Executive, Neil Schneider said the authority wanted ‘to avoid any further rumours that we want to get rid of any of the borough’s markets’ “We absolutely do not,” “As yet, we have simply said refocusing the market south of the town hall would give traders a permanent, dedicated space. This would also enable Stockton to host special events, festivals and other markets on the high street without disrupting the regular traders. “We will continue to work with the traders in redesigning the market layout and location to improve the traditional and speciality markets. As the petition has over 2,000 signatories, we will be bringing the petition to discuss at a full council meeting and will continue our discussions with the traders. We welcome everyone’s views and comments and indeed, there‘s been some very supportive comments about the need to do this. If we are to successfully regenerate Stockton, doing nothing is not an option.” To give your views on the town centre proposals visit www.stockton.gov.uk/stocktontowncentre

The market traders and hackney carriage drivers would like to thank all the individuals who support their campaign and look forward to serving you from Stockton High Street, for many more years to come.

The doors are to open at Billingham Forum The countdown is on for the grand re-opening of the iconic Billingham Forum after its multi million pound refurbishment. The £18.5 million scheme is now complete and will re-open to the public on Friday 3 June for three days of special events, taster sessions and entertainment. The contractors Morgan Sindall finished on site at the beginning of May and Stockton Council and Tees Active are working together to get the refurbished Forum building ready for the opening. From Friday 3rd June to Sunday 5th June there will be special taster sessions, and fitness classes as well as the chance to ice skate, swim, play badminton and squash as well as the opportunity for youngsters to try out the new play barn. For more details about the taster sessions log onto www.teesactive.co.uk Councillor Ken Lupton, Leader of Stockton Council, said: “It is fantastic to see Billingham Forum about to re-open its doors as this is a much loved sports and leisure facility

for the people of Billingham, Stockton Borough and the wider region. The weekend of celebrations will allow people to come in and try out all the different sessions.” The investment into the 1960s centre has transformed it into a state-of-the-art leisure and theatre facility for future generations to enjoy. The new look centre includes: A swimming pool (6 lanes x 25m) with the creation of an additional training pool together with the retained learner pool. Refurbished changing rooms, toilets and spectator areas An extended gym to offer an additional 30 health and fitness stations making 70 in total. Changing facilities have been improved and a new dance studio provided Structural improvements carried out to the theatre area and an enhanced entrance and hospitality areas The ice arena has been rejuvenated with a new ice pad and upgraded spectator area, toilets, and skate hire distribution point and changing facilities

Helpline for NHS recalls A Hospital trust is contacting 450 patients who have had metal-on-metal hip replacements, in one of the biggest recalls of its kind in the region. The move by North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust follows last year’s recall by the trust of 378 patients who had metal-on-metal resurfacing joints. There are growing national concerns over metal on metal hip joints. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency last year issued advice to orthopaedic surgeons across the UK to follow up patients with metal-on-metal hip replacements. The letters will invite patients for an appointment over the coming months. The trust is following national guidance that patients should be reviewed so any early signs that their hip joint is failing can be identified. A spokesman said there can be problems for a small number of patients where the tissue around the hip joint is affected. The 450 patients had their total hip replacement at either the University Hospital of Hartlepool or the University Hospital of North Tees, in Stockton, between 2003 and 2009. They will have a blood test and an assessment of movement and pain in the joint. Once the results of the tests are known, discussions will take place to plan further action. A helpline has been set up for the patients affected. It is open from 8am to 6pm on 01642-624231.

Billingham Forum - due to re-open on 3 June The indoor two lane bowls court has been refurbished as have the four court sports hall and two squash courts A more stylish and enhanced reception area with new central café area in a glazed atrium has been created, allowing visitors to the Forum to relax and enjoy their surroundings. A children's play barn plus catering and function room Councillor Bob Cook, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and

Transport, said: “This ambitious refurbishment of the Forum has been a challenging scheme but through the partnership working with Morgan Sindall it is now complete and soon to be open for business. The building is now fit for modern purpose and ready for use for future generations.” The new distinctive cladding on the exterior of the building has been erected and as well as the visual improvements into Billingham Forum, Stockton Council has invested in further

measures to reduce the carbon footprint of the building, including an advanced heating control system. Together, the improvements will increase the lifespan of the building to 30 years. Steve Chaytor, Managing Director of Tees Active, said: “There is real excitement in Billingham and among the staff of Tees Active at the reopening of The Forum. We believe this is a scheme that puts Billingham Forum in the premier division of leisure facilities.”

Speaking with the Moai Free Competition The Captain Cook Birthplace Museum at Stewart Park has launched a competition for visitors. As part of the Easter Island Myths and Popular Culture exhibition, there are eight giant Easter Island Statues or Moai standing tall around the museum. The statues were traditionally given a name according to their size, features and position now it’s time to find names for Middlesbrough’s Moai. Education Officer Jenny Phillips said: “We think that our Moai need a name there are eight prizes up for grabs, one prize for each name. “The names for these Moai will travel with them when they go to the Kon-Tiki Museum, along with the prize winners’ names, in October 2011.” To take part, find all eight Moai in the museum, and come up with suitable names for them. Competition entry forms are available at the front desk and must be handed in by Friday 10th June.

This new exhibition at the Dorman Museum, originally called “Death of Steel 1875-2010” and created and shown by ArtsBank in 2010 as a response to the closure of the local steel works, explores the ways in which the steel industry has shaped our landscape and our lives. Re-named “Steel Life” to reflect the recent announcement of the purchase and planned reopening of the works by SSI, this collection of work, from many decades, offers an insight into the changing fortunes of the industry and the lives of the people at its heart. To the outsider’s eye, Teesside may seem like an environment contaminated by heavy industry, but as these paintings, photographs and sculptures show, to the familiar, the landscape can be awe inspiring. Dog walking in the countryside this Spring

Lambing season brings joy to local family

Scott and Debz from ‘come rain or shine dog walking’ of Billingham are pictured here with their family, Ruby, Cameron, Georgia and Matthew, taking a break and helping to feed some pet lambs - certainly makes a change to dogs!

A recommendation to owners of dogs that during the lambing period, where stock is present, they keep dogs on a lead when walking on Public Rights of Way, even though legislation only suggests keeping dogs under close control. However legislation under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act (CRoW) relating to dogs in the countryside has slightly complicated the issue. Dogs on access areas identified under the Act need to be kept on a lead. In some cases dog exclusion notices have been served on sensitive areas mainly relating to nesting birds. But if the owner is on a Public Right of Way crossing the access area the dog only needs to be under close control. So why are farmers so concerned about dogs at lambing time? Apart from the obvious rogue dogs running wild and physically worrying and often killing sheep or causing them to abort, the advice for dog walking in the countryside as follows: • Keep your dog on a short lead near farm animals, but if cattle act aggressively it is safer if you let it off the lead. • Never let your dog chase animals or birds. A dog worrying livestock can be legally shot • On moorland it’s important to keep your dog on a short lead (less than 2

Celebrating over 50 years of Pet Care in Middlesbrough www.place4pets.co.uk metres) between 1st March and 31st July when rare birds are nesting on the ground • In most moorland areas dogs must stay on rights of way. Please keep them on a lead or to heel at all times. • Forestry Commission woods are a great place for your dog to explore. Please keep your dog under control when visiting • Don’t give your dog a bad name…always deal with your dog’s mess! Take special care to not leave dog mess on paths or areas where people walk. Remember that arable crops and grass are used for producing food for people or livestock, so always clean up in farmland too. • It’s safer if you keep your dog on a lead by your side near horse riders or cyclists • Always look out for signs giving advice on keeping your dog on a lead at sensitive times for wildlife and farm animals’

Composite Wood Grain Decking & Fencing

Paralympic gold medallist Baroness Tanni-Grey Thompson DBE joined Marshalls plc to officially open Eaglescliffe Forest School during May. Known as ‘a classroom without walls’, the Forest School offers mainstream children and children with behavioural, emotional and learning difficulties an innovative approach to outdoor play and learning in a woodland environment. Volunteers from Marshalls plc, including staff from the organisation’s Eaglescliffe service centre, have been working to clear pathways in the forest in time for the opening. Work has involved collecting wood and building natural hedges to enable youngsters to play and learn outdoors in a natural environment. Marshalls plc Works Manager (Eaglescliffe)

Neil Glover commented: “Marshalls is delighted to have been involved in the development of this site for use by the Forest School and in securing the site for the school’s future use. The Forest School is part of our ongoing investment in the community around us and we’re extremely proud to be involved in the fantastic work being done by the school”. Site Manager and Forest School Practitioner Maxine Reid added: “Marshalls have been very supportive, making us feel very welcome and together we look forward to sharing our ‘Classroom without Walls.’ Located on a private site in Eaglescliffe, the Forest School encourages children and young adults to explore the environment in order to develop healthy bodies, social skills and a love of

the natural world, whilst learning new ways to co-operate and communicate. Regular sessions are held in the woodland, all year round. Baroness Tanni GreyThompson added: “I might never have become an athlete without people giving me opportunities and looking beyond my disability,

which is why projects like the Forest School are so important. Thank you to Marshalls for making all this happen and for having the vision and forward thinking to use the forest in such an inspiring way. It’s great to see a progressive company giving something back so close to home.”

Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE officially unveiled a dedicated plaque joined by Andrew Allner (Chairman, Marshalls plc) and Graham Holden (CEO, Marshalls plc).

ROOFLINE PRODUCTS Get on your bike for the Stockton Cycling Festival

Whether you are a whizz on wheels or haven’t been in the saddle for years, Stockton Cycling Festival has something for everyone. The inaugural event takes place on Saturday and Sunday, 16th -17th July and as well as action from top cycling teams, there will be fun and rides for cycling novices. The weekend will feature two main events and various supporting activities to create a hub of excitement for all the family on Stockton’s Riverside. Stockton Council has joined forces with sustainable transport charity Sustrans and cycling events company Velo 29 to bring the festival to town. Councillor Mary Womphrey, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: “Stockton has a great reputation for putting on festivals and the Stockton Cycling Festival will be a fantastic new addition to our events calendar. “This weekend is not

just for experienced cyclists there really is something for everyone. Cycling is a wonderful way to get about, keep fit and reduce car use. This event will help people of all ages get back in the saddle whether it be on a penny farthing or mountain bike!” On Saturday 16th July, keen cyclists can pick one of three rides to take part in. Take your pick of 32, 62 or 92 miles to enjoy the scenery on two wheels. The rides are non competitive and take place on a looped course with food and water stations along the route. The challenge rides start from 8am from Stockton Riverside Car Park and for more information or to book a place log onto www.velo29cyclingteam. co.uk/stockton-cyclingfestival-2011/ On Sunday 17th July the action takes place from 10.30am until 5pm and there is the opportunity to sit back and watch the experts in action as Stockton Riverside is transformed into the home of track cycling. Marvel at the speed of

the elite cyclists as they race round the track, weaving and sprinting to get ahead of the pack. As well as watching the elite racers, complete novices can get on the track first for a free fun ride alongside the River Tees. The day will also see the chance to try pedal powered slot car racing, unicycling, virtual cycling and mountain biking on an extreme course. There is also the opportunity to try out a penny farthing, tandem and three wheeled KMX cart so take your pick of wheels! Staff from The Hub in Stockton will also be on hand throughout the day to offer advice on bike choice, local cycle routes available and even a check up for your cycle from Dr Bike. Families can take advantage of a free guided cycle ride from 1pm on Sunday with a gentle route around Stockton. Saddle up and log onto www.stockton.gov.uk/ events/cyclingfestival for more information.

Record numbers visit Preston Hall Museum & Park Visitors are flocking in record numbers to Preston Hall Museum & Park which Stockton Council is currently redeveloping in a £7 million investment programme. During February to April 2011, the Museum welcomed more than 37,000 people through its doors a rise of almost 80 per cent on the same period in 2010. The major regeneration scheme by Stockton Council includes the restoration of the Hall and other improvements to the Grade II listed building, improvements to the Victorian Street, the installation of the new jetty within the Park and the re-creation of the original walled garden and orchard. The scheme has attracted £3.58 million of funding from the Heritage Lottery Fun and once completed next year, Stockton Council expects to continue this growth in visitor numbers. The Museum is currently showing a fantastic exhibition in the Ballroom called ‘Behind the Scenes at the Museum’, giving an insight into some of the work which goes on away from the

public eye. A great range of workshops and activities has also helped attract new visitors to the Museum and Park, including the ParkMade series of traditional craft taster days. The Drapers Tea Room in the bustling Victorian Street is also proving popular with visitors wanting to take a break for a delicious snack. Councillor Mary Womphrey, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: “Preston Hall Museum & Park has always been a popular visitor attraction and it

is wonderful to see that popularity growing. “The multi million pound redevelopment it is currently undergoing can only help to improve what’s on offer and the refurbishment continues this year with a view to being competed by spring 2011.” The Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am until 4pm and each Bank Holiday Monday throughout the summer. Admission is free and you can pick up a What’s On guide from the Museum to see what great events are on throughout the year.

As well as clay pot making, blacksmithing and proggy mat making sessions as part of the ParkMade events, there will be two outdoor theatre productions in summer. On Sunday, 24th July families can enjoy Pinocchio and on Saturday, 20th August Rain and Shine Theatre Company will perform Much Ado About Nothing. Bring a picnic and blanket and enjoy the show! For more information call Preston Hall Museum & Park on (01642) 527375 or email prestonhall@stockton.gov.uk

Motorbike tour links Europe’s Transporter Bridges Teesside’s iconic Transporter Bridge was the latest stop on a European tour with a difference. For Maureen Hendon and her partner Robert Reese are visiting every working transporter bridge on the continent. The pair set off early in April from Maureen’s home town of Newport in south Wales, home to a fine transporter opened in 1906 by Lord Tredegar. Robert’s trusty BMW K1200 then took the pair to Warrington, and on to Middlesbrough. Their quest then took them by ferry to mainland Europe to visit Osten and Rendsburg in Germany, followed by Rochefort in France and finally Portugalete in Spain. When Maureen and Robert return by ferry to Portsmouth, they will have clocked up an impressive 2,010 miles over 10 days. And in addition to seeing some of the world’s finest bridges, they’re hoping to raise lots of money for ‘Benefit Kidney Wales’, a cause close to Maureen’s heart as she has undergone four kidney transplants over the last 17 years. She said: “It’s been a rough ride, but I’m now feeling better than ever and am keen to take on new challenges. “Robert loves his bike riding so we

thought we could combine that passion with my tenacity and visit all the Transporter bridges which are still operational in Europe it’s a great bike but unfortunately it won’t ride on water to Buenos Aires or the USA for the full set! “I don’t know where I would be without the selfless acts of four donors and their families - I hope as many people as possible will support a great cause and help us to promote organ donation. “We are also fundraising for kidney research again, people with kidney failure are reliant on research into new medication and treatments.” Middlesbrough Chief Executive Ian Parker said: “Maureen and Robert have picked a great year to visit the Transporter as the bridge nears its centenary. “It’s nice to think they will be joining up the European transporter ‘family’ and I wish them all the best with their efforts for a very worthy cause.” Anyone wishing to donate can visit Maureen and Robert’s special charity web page at: www.just.giving.com/r-mbiketour All the money raised will benefit and support the renowned Institute of Nephrology at the University Maureen Hendon and her partner Robert Reese are visiting Hospital of Wales, benefiting kidney every working transporter bridge on the continent. patients worldwide..

Court case sends out strong message to arsonists

Barry Waller Head of Fire Engineering A senior officer with Cleveland Fire Brigade said that a successful prosecution in April sends out a clear message that Cleveland Fire Brigade will not tolerate arsonists. Barry Waller, Head of Fire Engineering for Cleveland Fire Brigade was speaking after Stephen Thomas Smith pleaded guilty at Teesside Crown Court to setting fire to wheelie bins in the Berwick Hills area of Middlesbrough on December 28th last year. Smith was sentenced to four years in a young offender’s institution. Three appliances attended the scene in Bradhope Road to extinguish fires to several

wheelie bins, one of which was located close to a house where the occupants were alerted by their smoke alarm and were evacuated. Barry Waller said: “This incident could have been very serious had it not been for the fact that the occupants of the house were alerted by their smoke alarm. Three fire engines spent almost an hour and a half tackling the fires, which were purely down to arson. “Following the incident we carried out a joint investigation with Cleveland Police which involved monitoring CCTV footage and we are delighted that the perpetrator has been brought before the courts. “This case reiterates Cleveland Fire Brigade’s stance that it will not tolerate anyone who deliberately starts a fire. The general public can be reassured that we will vigorously investigate all fires in the Teesside area and seek to always prosecute any identified offenders.” In recent years incidents of arson have significantly reduced throughout the Cleveland area. In 2007/08 there were 6,149 incidents of arson

compared to 2,540 in 2010/11 - a 58.7 per cent reduction. To help keep you and your family safe from fire, the Brigade provides free Home Fire Safety Visits

happening throughout the day. Refreshments will be available. Entrance is free, donations would be welcome for the Redcar R.N.L.I. The exhibition will also be open to the public on Tuesday, 7th June from 6pm until 9pm and Thursday, 9th June, from 10am until 4pm.

400th Anniversary of King James Bible To celebrate the 400th Anniversary of the King James Bible, Redcar United Reformed Church on Station Road, Redcar is hosting 'Spinning a Yarn according to the original pattern' this is an exciting exhibition of 33 knitted scenes from the Bible - on Saturday, 11th June from 10am until 4pm. Activities and demonstrations are

exists to meet the needs and promote the interests of asylum seekers and refugees who have arrived or have settled in the North of England. NERS acts as an agent of positive change in order to improve the everyday life conditions of asylum seekers and refugees, and to promote social inclusion by facilitating their integration and equal participation within British society. A volunteer of nine years is Frances from Norton, who gives her time willingly to help those who have been dispersed to Stockton, she said: “Many of our sanctuary seekers arrive with nothing to call their own, often needing basic items such as; blankets, clothes, soft toys for children, crockery, books etc. “It is a myth that our refugees get a load of handouts, they actually receive a basic roof over their head and £35.00 per week. Once a sanctuary seeker has been given refugee status, they are expected to relocate and start a home from scratch.”

The Drop in volunteers endeavour to ensure that all who attend, are made to feel welcome and play a part in community life, often referring the sanctuary seekers to other organisations, help groups and introducing to social activities. Francis added: “The group would welcome any donations, clothing/blankets etc, which can be dropped into the centre during our opening times, if you are wanting to find out more about the services or would like to offer any of your time, please call in and make yourself known, you would be required to undertake a CRB and other associated training, but the rewards can be very fulfilling.” As well as working directly with asylum seekers, NERS is also involved in a host of other refugee related work. The North of England Refugee Service (NERS) believes that refugees in general receive an unfairly negative press and also that the whole issue of asylum seekers in the UK has been confused by the media and politicians irresponsible use of terms like 'bogus' and 'economic migrants', which have served to blur the definitions between genuine asylum seekers and illegal immigrants.

l-r Stockton Council’s Environmental Health Officer Sarah Wolleter, Paul Raffique, Chair of Yarm Pub Watch, Jonathan Stott, Stockton Council’s Environmental Health Officer and Sergeant Stephen Williams-Reader of Stockton Police.

STOCKTON Council along with other borough councils played its part in national Noise Action Week (23rd – 27th May) which took place to raise awareness of the impacts of noise to residents in the Borough. This year’s Noise Action Week saw the launch of a new multi agency effort between the Police Licensing Unit, Stockton Council’s Environmental Health Unit, publicans, landlords and breweries throughout Stockton. The aim is to work together to reduce noise and public nuisance and thereby help improve the lives of local residents. As part of this new partnership, the Council’s Environmental Unit provided posters and beer mats along with a series of presentations to publicans who attend

Stockton Pub Watch meetings to discuss their role in helping to keep noise from music and customers to a minimum. Councillor Steve Nelson, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Safety, said: “Noise impacts on everyone and Noise Action Week is a good opportunity for everyone to consider the noise they make and the effect it can have on others. “We don’t want to stop people having a good time when they are out but by working closely with the licensed trade it is hoped this campaign will help to raise awareness of the need to reduce unnecessary noise. Publicans have a duty to ensure the noise from their premises is not to the detriment of those

living or working nearby. This partnership approach will help all involved to understand where their responsibilities lie.” Paul Raffique, Chair of Yarm Pub Watch, added: “I have been in the license trade for 30 years and it is the responsibility of landlords to ensure noise is not an issue.” Noise Action Week is organised by Environmental Protection UK and during the week everyone is urged to: Consider the noise they make and the effect it has on others Consider the noises which disturb them For more information on Stockton Council’s Noise Action Week activities, call (01642) 526575 or email environmental.health@ stockton.gov.uk

many attractions at Middlesbrough Sky Ride. A 7km loop from the Middlesbrough Cycle Circuit will take riders on a traffic-free route, taking in local places of interest such as Fairy Dell Park, Newham Grange Country Farm and Nature’s World. In 2010, more than 6,000 people took part in Sky Ride Middlesbrough. This year even more riders are expected to join in and enjoy the buzzing atmosphere with a variety of fun activities and entertainment. Sky Rides will be across the UK with the aim of getting one-million more people cycling regularly by 2013. Last year, over 216,000 people got involved nationwide and this summer it’s going to be even bigger. All over the country, more and more people are getting on their bikes every day. Join Sky Ride to find out where your bike will take you. Backed by multiple world and Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy, the nationwide search will see the ultimate cycling descent being crowned the UK’s Perfect Hill. Designed to remind

people how much fun cycling can be, anyone in Britain can nominate their chosen hill, the entry criteria are: location, views, where it takes them, historical significance and most importantly what the hill means to them. The general public and a panel of three judges including Sir Chris himself and Editor of the Lonely Planet Cycling Guide, Etain O’Carroll, will shortlist the entries, before crowning one hill the UK’s most perfect for cycling down. Sir Chris Hoy, Sky Ride ambassador for the third year running said: "I'm really looking forward to taking part in one of the fantastic Sky Ride events this summer and it's great to be so involved in the campaign. What makes a hill perfect to cycle down? Well, that's up to you. It might be the amazing view from the top, the sense of achievement from getting there, the memories you have from riding down it, or the fact that it takes you to your favourite place - whatever hill springs to mind, we want to know and why."

Synthonia Male Voice Choir Originally formed in 1928 as part of the ICI recreation section of the Synthetics and Ammonia plants, this choir is still going strong, entertaining groups and raising money for various charities in the Teesside area. However, a few more singers are needed to balance the sound and ensure the continuation of this well known choir well into the future. Musical Director Margaret Pringle would like to invite any gentlemen who may be interested in singing with the choir to come along to a rehearsal in the Synthonia Club, Belasis

Avenue, (Forster Suite) on Mondays at 7.15pm. An ability to read music is an advantage, but not essential. Music and uniforms are provided by the choir and you are assured of a warm welcome and lots of fun at both rehearsals and concerts. Now is a good time to join as members are going to be learning new music ready for a performance in The Sage, Gateshead, in April 2012 when they will perform in a Choral Spectacular with other choirs who belong to the National Association of Choirs here in the Northeast. Accompanist

Dr Gordon Angus would like to retire soon, so the choir are hoping to have a Deputy Accompanist working alongside him, ready to take over when he leaves. Anyone who may be interested in this position should contact Musical Director Margaret Pringle tel: 01642 363502. All concert details appear on the choir’s website: www.synthoniamalevoicec hoir.org.uk For further information, to book the choir for your next event or to order a CD please contact Margaret or the Secretary Ken Peacock telephone 01642 613480.

College celebrates in style The 450th anniversary celebrations of Prior Pursglove College went down a treat early May as thousands of people turned out to enjoy the festivities. The day began with a colourful parade through the centre of

Guisborough showing a range of costumes through the ages and included a number of local dignitaries, staff and students of Prior Pursglove and Askham Bryan College,

staff from Teesside University, pupils from Laurence Jackson School and Bydales School, members of the public and a host of professional entertainers such as Queen Elizabeth I, an executioner, stilt walkers,

knights in armour, musicians and animals. The celebration was officially opened by The Lord Crathorne, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire and people of all ages enjoyed the activities that took place at the College, Gisborough Priory and St Nicholas Church including Tudor music and dancing, archery, games, cooking, drama performances, gunpowder weapons and a royal audience with her Majesty Queen Elizabeth I. Judy Burton, Principal of Prior Pursglove College said: “Our 450th anniversary is an opportunity for us to celebrate all that is great about Prior Pursglove College. We are proud of our heritage and our long history of academic excellence having had education on our campus since 1561. “The whole weekend of celebrations was phenomenal, it was a real community event with people from all walks of life and of all ages enjoying the celebrations. “We were delighted to be honoured by the presence of a number of local dignitaries including The Lord Crathorne, Her Majesty’s LordLieutenant of North Yorkshire, the

Mayor and Mayoress of Redcar and Cleveland, Ray and Marjorie Goddard, the Mayor of Guisborough, Peter Spencer, Amanda Skelton and George Dunning from Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and Member of Parliament Tom Blenkensop.” “It is rare and remarkable to have an educational establishment as old as ours and we are thrilled to have been able to celebrate this with the community. We also have plans to conserve our many unique historical artefacts for the benefit of future generations.” The festivities continued at the college on Sunday with a fabulous celebration of music and the creative arts by local schools then finished with an Evensong service at St Nicholas Church which brought to an end a hugely successful weekend. The college will continue to celebrate its anniversary throughout the year. The next event will be a fundraising dinner at Guisborough Hall on 8th June. Tickets are £25 each and available by contacting the college on 01287 280800. Students are also designing a commemorative statue commissioned by the Trustees of the Foundation of the college which will be unveiled later in the year and will provide a lasting tribute to the anniversary.

Qatar Football World Cup 2022 Khalifa Stadium - Qatar The football world looked on in bewilderment as the president of FIFA announced the venue for the 2022 World Cup Finals would be the Gulf state of Qatar, a peninsular about the size and shape of the County of Yorkshire with only one major City, Doha, and a handfull of small cities and townships dotted around the country. With a population of only 1.7 million people of which 75% are expats from around the World, and Qatar having only one border with Saudi Arabia and otherwise surrounded by the waters of the Arabian Gulf, what on earth was the thinking behind this strange decision? Time for me to travel there and check out what Qatar and Doha had to offer the greater sporting world and football in particular. And what a very pleasant surprise I received. Firstly what a sporting orientated country Qatar is, which I will follow up in future issues with lots of information and photographs. However, the sporting population are generally football orientated, not only with their own Q-League of two divisions covering 18 teams, but with the wider world football activities that are available to watch live throughout the Country. My pleasure was sitting in the bar of the Doha Rugby Club or the Ramada hotel at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon with six or seven large tv screens showing a live Premier League game on each screen. Back to the FIFA decision, just how did a nation with a tiny population, ranked around 41 in the World rankings, no real footballing pedigree, only one major venue - the Khalifa Stadium in Doha, and three or four top class venues for Q-League teams a limitation on the number of hotel accomodations, a limited internal public transport system and a climate that reaches 50C(120F) in the summer months when the finals will be staged come to be awarded the staging of the biggest sporting event in World football against competition from some of the biggest countries in the World?

How? The answers to the above limitations are all linked to the legacy that will be left followng these finals. Not only the legacy to the Country of Qatar but also to the whole of the Gulf states

and Middle-East, and also to the World in general with the innovations and technologies that are being incorporated in the staging of this World class event. A leading spokesman for the Qatar World Cup 2022 said it is refreshing that a small nation can show leadership and confidence in the development of renewable and low carbon technologies in partnership with technology organisations from around the World. The photograph shows the Khalifa Stadium which itself is scheduled for a massive redevelopment. The technology and

investment in planning such stadiums which incorporates the emerging technologies such as: • A total carbon-free concept • Renewable energy technology • Zero-carbon cooling technologies • Solar powered electricity • Solar powered air conditioning • Passive design and building orientation • Use of photovoltaics • Use of water v oil filled pipes for heating • Open roofed stadia as required by FIFA • All technological equipment

demountable and transferrable to other sporting events around the World. This is exciting times for

Qatar and the winning of the staging of the 2022 Football World Cup is only the starting point. Details of the proposed

future developments for the Country we will cover in future issues of The Circuit.

from the public in reducing auto crime after a spate of thefts from cars over last weekend particularly Sat-Nav systems. Sat-Nav systems are a favourite target for thieves breaking into cars and although some people attempt to hide

them in glove compartments or under seats – thieves seek them out by looking for tell tale signs like cradles or even suction cup marks left on windscreens. Crime Reduction Officer PC Ged Kirkbright said: “The number of auto crime offences continues to fall, with Middlesbrough now providing a number of safe car parks with the ‘Park Mark’ Safer Parking Award. However, over the weekend we saw an increase in thefts from cars – with Sat Nav systems being targted.” PC Kirkbright offered the following advice: Don’t leave Sat Nav’s in

your vehicle. Think about the tell tale signs that show you have a Sat-Nav system fitted. Don’t leave the cradle on view and wipe the suction marks off the windscreen - because that’s what the thieves look for. Please don’t think hiding things in the glove box will make a difference, because that’s the first place they look! He added: “Remember to note the serial number of all your possessions and mark them with your postcode and house number. Remember to remove valuables from vehicles, otherwise … someone else will!”

Be aware of telephone scams There are two main ways of tempting you into returning a call to this type of number. Your phone rings once and shows a missed call to a 07099 number. When you call back, the phone just keeps ringing, however you are being charged 50p minute as the ring tone is a recording and you've been connected since the first ring. Your phone rings and someone on the other

ends says something like, "Hello, hello, can you hear me", before hanging up? When you call back, the phone will ring and ring without reply(as above). The 07099 telephone number has also been linked to the 'we tried to deliver a parcel, but you were out' scam. This is where you're sent a calling card from a courier who apparently tried to deliver a parcel to your address.

The first thing to note is, why have they sent the calling card through the post if they were standing on your doorstep? The number will usually be a 07099 number and will cost you 50p minute. Oh and you have realised by now, there never was a parcel in the first place, it's a scam!

BEWARE 07099 Tel. nos.

Public views sought to boost scrutiny process Members of the public are being asked to put forward the issues relating to life in Middlesbrough they would like investigated. Issues coming under the spotlight could include anything from the environment, housing and community protection to health, social care and transport. Middlesbrough Council’s decisions, policies and services are subjected to a scrutiny process to ensure the authority’s work is both accountable and transparent. A number of panels carry out detailed, evidence-based public reviews of services and issues affecting the lives of local people, and they can make recommendations for improvements. The process enables members of the public to have a greater say in Council matters by

suggesting the holding of inquiries into topics of local concern. Members of the public are also welcome to attend scrutiny meetings where those topics are being discussed. Some examples of previous panel investigations include:

End of life Care looked at how Middlesbrough’s health and social care services care for people who are dying, the sort of care they receive and where they receive their care.

Winter Maintenance explored the preparedness of the Council and other agencies to tackle extreme weather conditions, with the aim of assisting businesses, transport and pedestrians with their mobility, in addition to the needs of vulnerable people. Food Hygiene looked at the value of the Council’s star-rating scheme and

how it compares with the emerging National Scheme for the benefit of people eating out in Middlesbrough.

Designated Public Place Orders – how the Police and other agencies work towards controlling the drinking of alcohol in public places and the prevention of drink related anti-social behaviour. Social Housing explored how affordable housing will be delivered in the future, the impact of the cuts in housing benefit on Middlesbrough tenants and what action needs to be taken to meet the social housing needs of an ageing population.

University Residents' Parking Scheme considered whether the recently introduced residents' parking scheme in University Ward has been enforceable and workable for all parties and to assess whether the scheme should

be extended.

Telecare - examined the current level of take-up of Telecare in Middlesbrough and considered why take-up of the service may not be as high as desired.

Personal Budgets investigated whether the Council is well placed to deliver the milestones set out by the Department of Health in respect of delivering personal budgets. Councillors will decide shortly which topics they want to look into over the coming year, based on suggestions from a variety of sources including the public. Anyone who has a subject they would like Scrutiny to consider can write to the Scrutiny Team, Members’ Office, PO Box 99a, Town Hall, Middlesbrough, TS1 2QQ or email: scrutiny@middlesbrough. gov.uk by Monday, June 6.

Four people have been arrested on suspicion of illegal money lending following an operation by the National Trading Standards illegal money lending team in Stockton-on-Tees in April. The Team executed search warrants at two residential properties in the Thornaby area, seizing cash and paperwork. The operation in partnership with Stockton- on-Tees Borough Council and Trading Standards, led to the arrests of two women aged 45 and 25, and two men aged 28. The four were arrested on suspicion of illegal money lending and proceeds of crime

offences, and have been bailed until June 8th whilst the team carry out further enquiries. Paul Dobson, Stockton Council’s Corporate Director of Neighbourhood and Development Services, said: “Stockton Council was the first local authority in the North East region to sign up to the new England Illegal money lending team. “Loan Sharks often prey on the most vulnerable in society, particularly in the current financial climate. We will continue to work with the Illegal Money Lending Team to ensure that action is taken against any loan sharks found operating in Stockton and to deter

illegal money lenders from trading in the area.” Nationally the Stop loan shark project has secured over 180 prosecutions for illegal money lending and related activity, leading to 107 years worth of custodial sentences. They have written off £37million worth of illegal debt and helped over 16,000 victims. Were you mis-sold Payment Protection Insurance? Advice is at hand for anyone who believes they may have been wrongly sold insurance when taking out loans or credit. The move follows a decision by the major high street banks to start paying claims in respect of payment protection insurance or PPI. Middlesbrough consumers who believe they may have been missold PPI in the last six years are urged to seek advice from Trading Standards Consumer Advice. Consumer Advice Centre Manager Jane Dent said: “PPI was

intended to cover loan, mortgage or credit card repayments if you found you were unable to make the payments because you could not work due to illness or redundancy. “However, many PPIs were mis-sold as the consumer did not realise they were taking out a policy or the policy wasn’t suitable for them, for example because they were self employed or due to retire during the life of the policy.” The claim process is fairly straightforward and members of the Middlesbrough Trading Standards Consumer

Advice team are available to provide advice on the completion of claims. There are a number of PPI claims companies also available to assist, but they may charge a fee or commission if they recover any money, the Middlesbrough Council service is free and the claimant will receive 100% of any compensation. The team is based at 51 Corporation Road, Middlesbrough and is available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9.30am to 3.30pm. No appointment is necessary.

Takeaway owner fined over hygiene standards The owner of a Middlesbrough takeaway has been fined after Environmental Health Officers from Middlesbrough Council’s Community Protection Service found poor standards of hygiene during a routine inspection. Kevin Boffy, owner of Eat in Corporation Road, Middlesbrough was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £529 costs after failing to keep his food premises clean and protect the foods he served from risks of contamination. The discovery came during a routine food hygiene inspection

in June, 2010. Senior Environmental Health Officer Melissa Clapham said: “Mr Boffy received food hygiene advice and guidance on a number of occasions before our visit in June. “However, the conditions found during our inspection in June showed that he had not kept his premises clean and had not implemented or maintained effective food safety procedures. “This had resulted in foods becoming contaminated by mould, food that was past its useby date and serious risks of cross-contamination. “Food waste and other

refuse had also been allowed to build up inside the premises.” Boffy was charged under the Food Hygiene (England) Regulations 2006 with failing to keep his premises and food equipment clean, failing to manage risks to food safety, and failing to ensure adequate provisions for the storage and disposal of waste. After pleading guilty to all charges at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 10th May Boffy was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay costs of £529 plus a £15 victim surcharge.

We know our onions when it comes to FRENCH vehicles

Unpleasant odour in your car? Vehicle manufacturers are now installing air conditioning or climate control systems into new cars as a standard fitment. This is great news for motorists, to be able to regulate more precisely our personal comfort level of cabin temperature and also reduce the humidity which could build up in these warm and sometimes very humid summer months, or when the rain comes it dehumidifies the cabin to reduce

condensation build up on our windows etc. These are some of the benefits, what about the down side? Did you know that cars with such systems might increase the risk of bronchial complaints such as asthma? The process of air conditioning essentially is that all the air passes through a filter and over an evaporator in a process that de-humidifies and the either heats or cools the air according to the driver's

own preference. The function of the pollen filter is to trap extremely small organic particles and over a period of time this will become clogged with the organic matter. Mould and fungus can colonise the filter, evaporator and most critically the ducting vents that feed the treated air into the cabin. The de-humidification process causes excess condensation to be generated in the ventilation system, whereby creating a warm, moist environment for the micro organisms to grow. As far as the motorist is concerned, the most noticeable occurrence is a strange odour when the air conditioning is switched on. However, once the fungus and mould growth has started it won't really matter whether the air

conditioning is on or not, because the air will naturally flow through the vents anyway. Problems are more likely to arise when a spell of wet weather follows a long period of dry conditions. So what is the answer? Periodic replacement of the cabin / pollen filter as per manufacturers recommendations and a good bacterial cleanse of the air ducting system and evaporator. There are lots of alternatives for this treatment, from foam injection to spray or vapour cleanse, most of which leaves a pleasant aroma. My personal recommendation would be an annual cleanse, it's not expensive but could potentially ease discomfort whilst driving.

It’s not just the icing on the cake...

Icing craft was created by Liz Knight from Redcar, out of her love for baking and passion for decorating cakes, which originally started as a hobby making cakes for friends and family. Over the years this has inspired

Liz to do more exquisite and distinctive designs, leading to the creation of stunning and elegant cakes at low prices and with 24 years experience you can be confident in your choice. Liz prides her service on offering good value and highly individual friendly service. Though the name Icing Craft identifies the creative flare with the finish of the cakes, Liz bakes all cakes to order from the finest ingredients and offers different flavours and fillings for you to choose from. “Your choice of cake does not need to be expensive to be of good quality,” Liz says: “My cakes are beautifully moist there is nothing worse than a beautifully decorated cake with a dry sponge or dry fruit cake! “Especially for your wedding cake, which will be the most important cake you are likely to have in your lifetime.

Wedding consultations are available by appointment with myself to discuss your requirements in detail with no obligation, at my home address in Redcar. Following our meeting should you decide to go ahead, a deposit will hold the date for you and a consultation can be arranged at a later date. Each cake is individually priced, depending on size, shape, design, decoration and flowers with the new addition of cup cakes for special days. Please feel free to browse my cake gallery on my website should you have any questions regarding prices and designs please contact me by phone or e mail.” Liz at Icing craft can supply a wide range of stands and cake tins for hire at very reasonable prices. Who-ray! for a Happy Birthday

Having begun on-line in 2009, Who-ray! will be celebrating its 2nd year in July. They are also celebrating the shop's first year in Stockton Town Centre, in a special event on Saturday 2nd July entitled 'Re:Generations'. TV Director Graeme Harper (Dr Who, Sarah Jane Adventures, the Coronation Street tram crash, & much more) is Who-ray!'s guest for the day, and will be signing copies of his book, 'Calling the Shots', a

chronicle of his time on Dr Who. Keeping Graeme company will be THREE LIVE DALEKS! Martin Shipley and Brian Burr, Who-ray!'s co-proprietors said: "Having been named Retail Winner in the Best New Business Awards, we wanted to build on our success by creating an event which would appeal to both young & not-soyoung fans alike. Our celebrations include a prize raffle, proceeds from which are being donated to the Butterwick

House Children’s Hospice: £1 tickets are on sale now, and there are five specially commissioned knitted ‘Who monsters’ up for grabs - we call them 'Baaa-leks'." Who-ray!'s not only a 'Who' shop - they also stock a wide range of gifts including incense, candles, textiles & retro/film-related goodies. Details for the 'Re:Generations' event are on the shop's website and Facebook page.

Uni students display their work Students display work PIC DONNA Students at Teesside University displayed their work after a three year interior architecture courses which has an outstanding reputation and graduates in some of the best-known practices worldwide. The work produced is the work assessed; there are no separate written examinations and the use of design projects is a key feature. The process of assessment is undertaken against carefully defined criteria and often involves a critique of project-based assignments - this is a process widely used in the design field and allows for both staff and peer group appraisal. Graduates typically pursue careers working as interior architects, CAD specialists or as creative members of architectural teams in areas as diverse as nightclub and pub design, retail and commercial, set design, exhibition and museums, and lighting design in a variety of locations from Italy to New York.

Those attending can look forward to a drinks reception, three-course gourmet dinner and a ‘Money Can’t Buy’ auction, with some super prizes including a week’s holiday in Turkey and a fabulous designer dress. All funds raised from the two events will be split between the Newcastle Teenage Cancer Unit and Crohn’s and Colitis UK. The evening is the brainchild of local entertainer Sarah Porteous who was inspired by the experiences of family and friends. Event management student Sarah said: “I was thinking about organising a fundraising event when I learned that a friend’s son had a cancerous bowel tumour. “It’s a really difficult time for Josh and his family and friends, but he has been so brave and we all want to do everything we can to support him. “Josh will be attending the Sportsman’s Dinner as a

speaker on behalf of the Teenage Cancer Trust which relies entirely on donations for the amazing work it does.” Sarah was also driven to raise cash for Crohn’s and Colitis UK after a relative died with the inflammatory bowel condition. “My mum was then diagnosed with Crohn’s - it’s an embarrassing and painful illness to live with and she has to endure endless tests to help her live as normal a life as possible,” she said. “Crohn’s and Colitis UK do fantastic work helping people around the country with the condition lead better lives. “I’m sure those taking part both in the Golf Day and the Sportsman’s Dinner will give generously to two very good causes!” • Tickets for the Golf Day are £400 for a team of four players, including celebrity guest. Tickets for the Sportsman’s Dinner are £49 per person or £500 for a table of 11. Those wishing to stay the night can book rooms at the Sporting Lodge at a discounted price of £55, with full use of facilities including spa and gym. Quote Sarah Porteous 5th Aug event when booking. Middlesbrough Council’s recent series of free procurement workshops have helped a local business to secure new work. Pet&r LLP is an independent HR and training consultancy based in Middlesbrough and run by Peter and Lynne Hammond. The company was established in 2003 and has gone from strength to strength, providing a range of services to a number of local authorities as well as work within the NHS with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Lynne heard about the Council’s workshops through its procurement event e-shot and attended to find out more about the public procurement process. She said: “The workshops have helped us in a number of ways. “They helped us save time by focusing our efforts; provided practical tips and in many cases showed us we were already doing the right thing. “They also allowed us to identify new

contacts across different sectors, as a result we have submitted further tenders and quotes and are excited to be able to extend our work with the NHS.” The workshops aimed to help businesses understand the Council’s procurement process, where to find opportunities and how to prepare for successful tendering. The sessions were funded through the European Regional Development Fund which helps stimulate economic development and regeneration in the least prosperous regions of the European Union The series has now come to a close, but there is still plenty of information on the council’s website at www.middlesbrough.gov.uk/business Practical guides are also available from the Business Support Team on 01642 729007, while Business Link runs a number of workshops to support businesses, visit: www.eventsnortheast.co.uk for further information.

Planning approved A wind farm has won Government approval after campaigners called for a public inquiry into the scheme. Banks Developments has been cleared to start work on four, 125m turbines at Lambs Hill Farm, near Stillington. The Lambs Hill Action Group (LHAG) asked for the planning application to be reviewed after raising concerns over how the decision was made by Stockton Borough Council. But the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has now decided the scheme, between Darlington and Stockton, does not require further investigation. Phil Dyke, development director of Banks Renewables said: “Our Lambs Hill proposals gathered a lot of support

from a large cross-section of the local community during the extensive public consultation process we carried out. “We were pleased that the application was recommended for approval by the council’s officers and that it was also supported by the council’s planning committee, showing their commitment to generating renewable energy at a local scale. “We are very happy that DCLG has decided that there is no need for any further review of our planning application and that we will now be able to take this project forward.” The scheme was approved by the council in March but the action group’s concerns led to a delay.

Here are the ‘Fore’ Infinity Golf Challenge Winners Shaun Elliott, Ron Wilkinson, James Haste and Brad Jenkins all pitched it right to avoid hitting the water and they were presented with their vouchers at Billingham Golf Club. The first ever Infinity Golf Challenge proved a real hit as participants clubbed together and raised more than £400 for the Mayor of Stockton’s chosen charities. The unique event took place down at Infinity Bridge with would-be golfers putting themselves forward for a challenge to hit a golf ball from the riverside onto a floating green 90 yards away. All wayward balls were collected from the River as they floated and will be re-used at next year’s event. Four lucky golfers landed their ball on the green and each won £50 of vouchers. The Infinity Golf Challenge raised £425 for the Mayor’s charities, Stockton

Cornerhouse Youth Project, the Dave Rayner Cycling Fund and a host of other smaller, local charities. Footage from the event can be found at www.youtube.com/stocktoncouncil Golf fans are also in for a real treat later this year as the 2011 Stockton Golf Week takes place from 2nd - 5th August. Redcar Town Get the Treble The North Riding County Football Association hosted 5 County Cup Finals on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday 7th & 8th May at County HQ, the home of the North Riding County Football Association.

The weekend kicked off on Saturday 7th May at 10.30am with the North Riding County Junior Under 15’s Cup sponsored by BBC Tees which took place on the County HQ pitch between Redcar Town A and Whinney Banks YCC. Whinney Banks YCC had already won the league and started off as slight favourites, but in a cup final anything can happen - and it did! Although Whinney Banks had the lion’s share of chances in the first half, the score remained goalless. Redcar Town started the second half brighter and were soon rewarded with a goal when Jack Boddy beat the Whinney Banks keeper low to his left to put the underdogs ahead. Redcar Town seemed to get a boost from this and were soon 2-0 ahead when Tom Hughes managed to lob the goalkeeper from some 30 yards. Whinney Banks were devastated but the boys fought back to get themselves back into the game when Sam Calvert brought the deficit back to just 1 goal. But as Whinney Banks continued to push forward in an effort to find the equaliser Redcar Town’s Joe Robson popped up to put the game to bed. John Smith the Whinney Banks manager said “I’m gutted for the lads, we’ve played Redcar Town 4 times this season and beat them every time. But if I have to be honest Redcar Town deserved their win today we just didn’t take our chances and they did.”

At 12 noon the North Riding County Junior Under 14’s Cup sponsored by Scarborough Evening News was contested by Marton Hall Drive and Rawcliffe Tigers from York. And it was Marton Hall Drive who took the silverware beating the Tigers by a single goal with Michael McGouran getting his name on the score sheet. Manager Andy Gunn said “It was a difficult game and Rawcliffe didn’t make it easy for us. But, we worked hard and got our just rewards in the end.”

And finally on Saturday the North Riding County Junior Under 16’s Cup sponsored by the Northern Echo took place between Redcar Town A and Fishburn Park of Whitby and kicked off at 2pm. In a hard fought game Redcar Town A edged out the Fishburn Park team with a single goal from Kieran Stares. Sunday 8th May started early with the North Riding Junior Under 11’s Cup sponsored by Sport & Corporate Awards kicking off at 10am. This final was between Redcar Town A and Richmond Town Juniors and it was the Redcar Town boys who started the better and were very quickly rewarded with a goal when Jack Nawton notched after only 5 minutes. Redcar continued to play football and were soon carving through the Richmond Town defence.

Matty Green got his first of two and Redcar Town’s second before Liam Collinson put the game to bed with the third of the game. As the second half kicked off Matty Green got his second of the day before Danny Ammor wrapped things up getting Redcar Town’s fifth goal. Richmond Town got a late consolation goal through Joshua

Devlin before the final whistle blew. Redcar Town manager Dave Markham said “We got off to a great start and the lads played very well today passing well and creating plenty of chances.” He continued “With 2 of the teams from Redcar Town winning on the Saturday the pressure was really on us but the boys didn’t let it show through.” And the final game of the weekend kicked off at 11.30am when the Junior Under 12’s Cup sponsored by The Goalkeeper Academy was contested between Stokesley Sports Club A and Marton Juniors. And it was Marton who took the honours with a 2 - 0 win with goals from Johnny Scotland - Peacock and James Craven. Alan Geddes PR & Marketing Officer said “This was a fantastic advert for Junior football across the County as all five games were played with total Respect throughout the weekend. We tried to make it a celebration of football and all of the teams/parents/officials ensured that this was the case.”

In the North Riding Saturday Challenge Cup final between Eston & Normanby Social and North Ormesby Institute it was the Tute who ran out eventual winners with a comfortable 3-1 win at County HQ, the home of the North Riding County Football Association. Eston and Normanby took the lead through Anthony Gregory early in the first half and looked to be dominating the game even though North Ormesby Institute missed

several chances to score prior to the end of the first half. The second half kicked off and North Ormesby Institute were soon level when Karl Liley equalised and this seemed to give them the momentum they needed. They continued to push forward and were soon rewarded again when Dave Howe after some hard work got on the score sheet to put the Tute 2-1 ahead and in prime position to lift the cup. Eston and Normanby

tried to get back into the game but were thwarted on each occasion and with only minutes remaining Eston and Normanby had a free kicks 30 yards out. The keeper came forward and was soon into the action however the Tute boys broke away. The Eston and Normanby keeper managed to get back but tried to juggle on the edge of the box when he tripped and fell and Daniel Lockwood slipped the ball into the net to finish the Eston

and Normanby boys off. Dave Bodley Vice President of the North Riding County FA and also President of the Teesborough League was in attendance to present the trophy and medals to both sets of finalists. Dave said “I am honoured to be here tonight as the Vice President of the County FA but more importantly as President of the Teesborough League as both finalists play in it which I believe is a first?”

CRICKET Records were smashed in one of the most remarkable matches in the league’s history, on a day when the form book elsewhere was also turned inside out. The record-breaking was at Marske, where 713 runs were scored from 100 overs, the highest ever combined score in a single match, with the Seasiders reaching 372, an alltime best and the first of the records to be broken. Chris Allinson’s 194 was his highest tally and also a club individual record. Simon Guy fell just five runs short of his century but faced only 68 balls, while Jonathan Pickard hit a career best 60. Together they hit 236 in boundaries.

ICE HOCKEY Billingham Bombers manager Allen Flavell and head coach Terry Ward are now experienced the excitement of the build up to the new ice hockey season in September. The duo have had a preview of what they describe as the best ice facilities in the North East of England in the re-vamped Billingham Forum. Since the closing of the Forum in June 2009 for a £15million make-over players have moved on to other North East based outfits but are expected to return to what is really a top-notch venue. Anyone interested in joining the Bombers can contact them on 01740 631129 Allen and Brian McCabe on 01642 534458.

NETBALL Grangetown Netball Club followed up their previous two Northern League title successes to lft the NorthEast Regional League title and finished top of the promotion play-offs against four rivals at the Loughborough venue. This success thrust them into the big-time with a place in the third division of the National Premier League. Club coach Geraldine Williams expressed her delight at the team performance over the season and feels that the squad are strong enough to make their mark in this top level for netball in this country. Their Premier League campaign is due to open in September which will see them travelling to compete against teams from as far apart as Portsmouth, Worcester and Kent.

LADY REFEREES The recent Northern League Ernest Armstrong Cup Final saw the debut as assistant referees in the League of Gillian Armstrong from Ponteland and Lynn Brown from Hurworth, Darlington. Team Northumbria beat Chesterle-Street on penalties but the two ladies made a big impression on players, club officials and spectators with their performance. They became the first team ever from Northfield School to win a National prize.

From Middlesbrough to Madrid What links 30-year-old Middlesbrough girl Kay Murray with footballing superstar Christiano Ronaldo? The obvious answer is Football, and the link goes back to the days that Kay won the competition to become the official ‘Boro Babe’ for the original Middlesbrough FC former TV channel. She later became co-presenter of a pre-match show Soccer Surgery before moving to London to study journalism, working for a local newspaper and presenting on a TV shopping channel.

Organiser Cheryl Baines (pictured right) and sister Michelle A small group of friends from Teesside set themselves a challenge to raise awareness for Diabetes UK, by cycling ‘The Three Parks’ a 32 mile circular starting from and ending at Wynyard Woodland Park. Organiser Cheryl Baines said: “I have an amazing team of cyclists, which will be lead by Tim from The HUB/Stockton. We set the date is set for Saturday 21st May and thankfully the high winds kept away. My sister Michelle was diagnosed with Type1 insulin dependant Diabetes at the age of five, and is now 43, having endured and lives with retinopathy, neuropathy and kidney failure to name a few. Michelle is an inspiration, a fighter, often seen as a miracle to have survived a number of conditions. If an angel is watching over her

then I bless this angel everyday. This year I my aim is to endure a different challenge to that of the yearly Middlesbrough 5 & 10km runs. By pushing the boundaries, trying a new terrain, an alternative activity plus, it is an activity which friends and family can take part in and can be a little less demanding than running. This cycling experience will hopefully inspire others to push their own boundaries and set their determination on fire! My sister will be cycling with the team, and not let her condition stop her in this challenge.” Diabetes is a condition whereby the pancreas does not produce insulin to regulate glucose. If untreated can lead

to heart disease, strokes, kidney disease, blindness and amputation. So far £500 has been raised in sponsorship and will be donated to the James Cook Diabetic Unit. If you would like to donate contact Cheryl on: 07929941961.
