CROSS COUNTRY C U R R E N T S

Winter 2014

Greetings Circle-Let Sisters, With the start of a new year, many of us began January by making new resolutions. Perhaps we resolved to lose weight, save more money or share more time with family and friends. Through each pledge we are trying to make ourselves better people. In the beginning, our Founders, Vivianne Malone Mayes and Dorris Bell Bass Daniels, created a prayer, a poem, a song and a motto to express Circle-Lets’ friendship. I believe their thoughts were whether we pray it, cited it, sing it or live it, the one tenet that will hold true is to live so that we are made better for our friends. Having a friend who makes us laugh or empathizes with us when we are given challenges is one of life’s greatest gifts. As this year progresses you may not lose 10 pounds, or save six months of household expenses, but I hope you will remember to share more time with family and friends, especially your Circle-Let friends. We are a group of friends that stretches across this vast country from Boston in the east to Los Angeles in the west, from Sarasota in the south to Chicago in the north. Reach across and find a new friend this year. A new feature starting with this issue is a member spotlight column. We have chosen the creator of Cross Country, Enid Johnson of the Washington Chapter, for the inaugural column. Circle-Let Enid Johnson served as our 11th National President from 1981-1983. Well before iPhones and iPads that provide instant texts, voicemails and even face to face contacts, she knew we needed to keep in touch—that‘s what friends do. Thanks Circle-Let Enid for championing a medium that allows us to know a little more about each other. As promised, included in this issue are pictures from the 2013 Conclave in San Francisco. You will be able to tell immediately from the photos that if you were not in attendance, you missed a great time. Again, thanks to the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter for providing an outstanding and memorable July weekend. This year our Conclave will be in our birthplace city—-Dallas. As you make plans for the coming year please consider spending a little time with your sister friends. I look forward to meeting you there, “For here is a bond-firm and true to the end— And far, far beyond the horizon.” Happy New Year! I pray peace, love and blessings for you this coming year. Yours in the Circle,

Greta J. Russell
