Circle-Lets, Inc. A Message From Our National President!

Welcome Circle-Let Sisters, It is my honor to be your National President. During my ten years in the organization I have gained a new set of accomplished, smart and caring friends across the country. Our circle of friendship is what is truly needed in today’s very complex times. Our mission “To provide a social outlet and a sisterly relationship among women with similar ideals, interests and goals” is alive and well throughout our chapter communities.

Over the next two years, as your leader I will continue to build our sisterhood by expanding our use of technology to improve and modernize our administrative infrastructure, enhance chapter to chapter communications and increase our National visibility. To do this we need your help. Please make sure your new members visit our website. Share your events with us realtime through your Cross Country representative. Attend conclave as often as possible to make new friends and enhance your membership experience. Talk about the Circle-Lets in your community.

Finally, I’d like to thank all the past presidents of the last three terms for supporting me and leaving a legacy to build upon. We have 426 members and this has been pretty steady over the last 4 years. Let’s do a push to break the 500 mark. That’s less than 4 new members per chapter.

We can do it ladies. Please join me to make this a reality.

Circle-Let Johnnie Booker donated her mother’s, Lillian B. Graves home, to Fort Valley State University that was dedicated at a Naming Ceremony on October 27, 2017. The home is currently being used as the President’s residence. Her granddaughter, Dalyn Booker, was featured as a soloist at the Christmas Service at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City.

Circle-Let Brenda Broadnax hosted her husband’s (Bonheur) 80th birthday party in Las Vegas. The couple celebrated with friends by dining, attending a Boys to Men Concert and Cirque du Soleil performance.

Circle-Let LaVerne Clark and her husband Keith celebrated their 30th anniversary on the island of ice, fire and crashing waves, Hawaii. They indulged in a traditional Hawaiian feast accompanied by live entertainment, cultural presentations and games.

They also, toured the museums and memorials of Pearl Harbor.

Circle-Let Vyvyan Dean was swept away by a high-adrenaline vacation to Dubai.

She exploded one of the most beautiful landmarks in Dubai, the Jumeirah Mosque.

Toured a facade of glistening towers, sand dunes and experienced the many mysteries of the desert.

Circle-Let Azira Hill spent her birthday in Thailand in October. Traveling with her daughter Circle-Let Nancy Cooke and ten other Atlantans toured temples, took cooking classes, cared for elephants, enjoyed dinner cruises and shopped the floating markets in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket. The night markets will never be the same, she shopped them all and there were spas galore, she hit those too. She savored every bite of the flavorful Thai cuisine.

In this culture it is an honor to serve the Monks on your birthday. Azira fed the Monks who blessed her. Ninety-four (94) never looked so good We were saddened by the transition of our sister Circle-Let Juanesta Johnson, one of the sweetest ladies you would ever meet.

She fought a good fight, finished the course, and kept her faith. We miss you!!!

By Circle-Let Vivian Broussard Guillory ThankYou and congratulations to the Roanoke chapter for a wonderful 2017 conclave. For myself, Pam Daniels, Lisa White and Julie Morial it was our first conclave and we had an absolute ball! I made many new friends from around the country but I may have overstayed in Roanoke having such a great time. It turns out that by the time I reached the airport there had been a storm in Charlotte and my flight was delayed. Later that afternoon they tried to get us a new plane which for some reason could not get in the air.

Finally, around 10 Sunday evening my airline booked a hotel room for me but I kept busy messaging with my Baton Rouge Circle Let sisters about the whole saga. I woke up early Monday morning and got the first plane to Charlotte that I could and finally made it back to Baton Rouge. But these events did not dampen my spirits about the great time I had at conclave. And I do plan to be the first one to register for the NewYork conclave!

By Circle-Let Stephanie Browne In April 2017, the Boston Chapter hosted a friendship cocktail party where each member was encouraged to invite likeminded women to give the chapter a chance to meet women our members might put up for membership. From this event, seven members were nominated. We are happy to report we welcomed seven new members into the organization in November 2017. Our goal was to expand our membership with young, engaging, highly energetic women who value friendships. We are extremely happy with the caliber of new members and are we confident that each new Circle-Let will be wonderful additions to our organization. We hope you enjoy our pictures!

CELERATION OF WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES 2017 was quite a year for members of the Dallas Chapter. To begin with, Circle -Let Marguerite and Circle- Mate Bernard Williams, Jr. celebrated their 65th Anniversary on December 25, 2017. What a wonderful milestone that is being enjoyed and honored by their family and friends. The couple married in Savannah, Georgia on December 25, 1952. Marguerite and Bernard met while attending West Virginia State University.

Speaking of anniversaries; Circle -Let Deborah and Circle Mate Randy Farris celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary on a 12- day cruise to the British Isles. They ventured to England (London, Southampton); Scotland (Glasgow, Invergordon, Edingburgh); Ireland (Dublin, Guernsey, Cork); Northern Ireland (Belfast); and, France (Normandy Paris). They visited several landmarks – House of Waterford Crystal, Blarney Castle, Blarney Woolen Mill Shop, the Titanic Memorial, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Trinity College, Loch Lomand, Normandy and the highlights of London and Paris. It was a lovely trip.

CHAPTER MEMBER AWARDS FOR 2017 Circle-Let Barbara Watkins was honored to have a plaque and her picture hung in the entry of the chapel in Parkland Memorial Hospital. The plaque noted some of her accomplishments during her tenure as Senior Vice President at Parkland Health & Hospital System and as President and CEO of the Parkland Foundation. Barbara also received the 2017 Outstanding Director of the Year Award as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Medical City Dallas Hospital from the Dallas Business Journal.

Circle Let Eleanor Conrad will be recognized in February as a diamond member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Her 75 years of membership and service does not go unnoticed by the sorority, her many organizations and the Dallas community. The Dallas Chapter of Circle-Lets, Incorporated salutes and congratulates Circle Let Eleanor Conrad, a charter member of our chapter, for her devotion to our chapter and to Circle-Lets, Incorporated.

Congratulations to Circle Let Sharon Clark. She has been selected to be in the 2018 class of NAAWLI ((National AfricanAmerican Women’s Leadership Institute). Only a few women are selected from across the country and we are so proud that one of our members is in this select group of young women.

Phenomenal Woman Achievement and Leadership Award from the Women Dentists of the National Dental Association OTHER NEWS WE ALL NEED TO HEAR Circle-Let Staphalene and Circle-Mate Irby Hunter are so proud of their granddaughter who is working with Nationwide in Columbus Ohio. They will soon be traveling to Indiana to witness the graduation of their grandson who is a fourth-year student at Purdue University in Lafayette, IN. And, their granddaughter will soon complete her freshman year at Howard University in Washington, DC. A big shout out and welcome back to Circle-Let Traci Evans.

As you may know she has been job located in New Jersey for the last few years. We are blessed to have she and Circle-Mate Kyle back with us.

We join Circle-Let Eddie Bernice in the mourning of her sister, Lee Helen Johnson Willis, Houston, Texas, who passed November 3, 2017. Lee was the widow of Attorney Favor Willis.

She was a nurse with an earned MPH degree from the University of Texas, School of Public Health. Lee will be solely missed by her sisters Eddie Bernice and Sallye Ruth Moore as well as her brother, Carl Edwards Johnson as many nieces and nephews.

WEDDING OF THE YEAR FOR OUR CHAPTER Wedding are always events of joy, friendship and family gatherings and Circle-Let Denise Bunkley and CircleMate Tom Perkins celebrated all of the above when they witnessed the marriage of their son Thomas P. Perkins III to Susy Reyes in Playa del Carmen, Mexico on October 21, 2017. Their younger son, Harrison B. Perkins, served as the best man. Denise’s brother, Houston Circle-Mate Crawford B. Bunkley, III and his wife, Circle-Let Anita Bunkley also attended the festivities.

Greetings from the Metro Hilton Head Chapter and Happy New Year to all! We are delighted to welcome four new members into our Circle of Sisters. They are Reva Lewie, Cora Marie Smith, Octavia Wood-Lewis, and Frances Mallory. We are excited and look forward to getting to know each of them better.

Houston-Galveston Circle-let Donna Thomas has been traveling the world delivering training for her employer, Apple. She has been on the road for several months, visiting Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands, Italy, Greece, and too many other countries to count. Happy traveling, Donna!!

Amazing women! Circle-Let Rev. Dr. Marcia Thompson attended the Balm of Gilead Medical Conference on Hilton Head Island in November with her aunt, Dr. Thompson, age 90, and Dr. Freeman, age 91. Both were classmates who graduated from Howard University Medical School in 1955 and practiced medicine in New York.

Houston-Galveston Circle-Lets, Anita Bunkley, Patricia Ratliff, and Diane Mayes (with tour guide Birdie Williams) enjoyed an extensive tour of the Cape Cod area, visiting Martha’s Vineyard, Hyannis Port, Provincetown, and the Boston area. Great food, fun and friends.

Circle-Let Reva Lewie was honored by her Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta in Baltimore, MD for 60 years of active service. She held several prominent offices throughout her years of service.

Circle-Let Reva Lewie and daughter Circle-Let Rev. Dr. Marcia Thompson are accomplished artists. Reva works with oils, acrylic, stained glass and metals. Marcia works with wall hangings, and mixed media. Both had their work displayed at the recent Gullah Arts Festival on Hilton Head, the Indigo Run Arts Display, and their work is currently on display at Hilton Head Hospital.

Circle-Let Bonnie Hawkins and Circle-Mate Ray Hawkins have a passion for golf. They traveled with friends to Scotland in July to play at the “Home of Golf”. They played at the famous St. Andrews Castle course, Kings Barn, and Carnoustie Links. The usually unpredictable weather cooperated this time and was perfect. Bonnie and Ray then traveled to London to see some thrilling tennis at Wimbledon. They had the opportunity to watch both Venus Williams, Sam Query and Roger Federer play their matches. All won their matches that day!

Circle-Let Frances Mallory and Circle-Mate James Mallory recently traveled to Hawaii to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.

Circle-Let Nancy King and Circle-Mate Wallace King celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary with a quiet dinner at home with family and friends.

The Hilton Head area experienced a very unusual event on January 3, 2018! SNOW…Winter storm Grayson dumped as much as 4.5 inches of snow on the area. That is unheard of in this part of the country which is known for its warm sunny weather all year round. The last winter storm of this magnitude was in 1989.

As one would guess, almost everything was closed. Oh, but it was a beautiful sight to see for those who did not have to travel in it. However, we hope it will be many more years before we experience that much snow in this area again.

just had to come and find out who all these beautifully dressed African American women were! She is a lovely down-to-earth woman and she and her mom chatted for a few minutes before continuing with their day.

Circle-Let Dodye was born in Beaumont, Texas, but moved to Los Angeles when she was 2 years old, so we consider her a native Angeleno! She attended Los Angeles High School and was in the same class as Dustin Hoffman. She met Theodore “Ted” Evans while attending Fisk University and they married on March 10, 1957. They had a daughter together, Circle-Let Chrystal Evans Bowman.

After retiring from the Los Angeles Unified School District as a Licensed Speech Pathologist, after 35 years, she went into a professorship at Cal State Fullerton. She traveled the district as a field supervisor and district mentor training incoming teachers.

Within Circle-Lets, on the National level, she served as National President from 1973 – 1975 and National Treasurer from 1971 1973. She always thought that it was funny that she served as Treasurer because at the time, she did not even have her own personal bank account! The most important thing to her in CircleLets is the friendship and comradery among the members.

Dodye loves to travel and collects fans from all over the world. Her most treasured vacation was her trip to Egypt. She also loves to spend time with her daughter, Chrystal, son-in-law, Blair, son of Circle-Let Carol Bowman, her two grandchildren, Evan and Brendan, and her canine companion, Luna.

Nashville

By Circle-Let Kimberly Watts Nashville Welcomes Ten (10) New Members In the Fall of 2017, the Nashville Chapter welcomed ten (10) new members with an Installation Ceremony, followed by Dinner and Dancing at the Hilton Downtown Nashville! The new Nashville Chapter members are Pamela Carter, Tracy Hardin, C. Monique Lewis, Janean Overton, Ivanetta Samuels, Christie Sheats, Helen Smith, Marie Sueing, Suzanne Thompson and Lisa Webb. After the Installation Ceremony we dined while enjoying the jazz and soulful music of Sonja Hopkins (JazzGirl), followed by dancing the night away with DJ Ernie Allen of 92Q radio station in Nashville!

Los Angeles Valley Chapter News!

Circle-Let Annice Wooden hosted the first meeting of the new club year in Desert Springs Palm Desert. The ladies all had a wonderful time relaxing during the weekend and eating great food.

Some of us carpooled over to the Agua Caliente Casino on Saturday night and had fun in the casino. Other spent some time visiting art galleries, shopping and dining on El Paseo, which is considered the Rodeo Drive of the greater Palm Springs area. Sunday morning was spent relaxing before driving back to Los Angeles.

Circle-Let Michelé Minnix thanked all of the Circle-Lets across the country for their love, support and well wishes.

As we all know, our Circle-Lets love to travel!

Circle-Let Jocelyn Smith traveled to several countries in Europe including Prague, in the Czech Republic,Vienna, Austria, Hungary and Bratislava, Slovakia. This year she plans on traveling to Italy for two weeks.

Circle-Let Gia M. Ramos traveled to Europe for two weeks with her cousin in January. They visited Barcelona, Nice, Monaco, Florence, Pisa, Rome and the Vatican City.

Circle-Let Pamela Taylor and her husband, Rodney, recently returned from sailing on a jazz cruise to the Caribbean and listening to wonderful live music every day.

Our newest member, Circle-Let Krishna Tabor, hosted her first meeting at Native, an African American owned restaurant in Santa Monica. The owner, “Top Chef” alum, Chef Nyesha J Arrington, believes in cooking with locally sourced foods and creates her menu based on fresh ingredients she finds during her daily visits to family farms and Farmers’ Markets.

We sat out on the sidewalk patio on a beautiful Saturday morning and during dessert, the hostess came in to tell us that we had a visitor who wanted to meet us. Imagine our surprise when Tyra Banks and her mom came through the glass doors! She said she

and local efforts to reform New Jersey’s child welfare system. She is a member of the Essex County Model Court (an initiative of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges), the Essex County Human Services Advisory Council, and a trustee of the Council of New Jersey Grantmakers.

The Nashville Chapter was proud to acknowledge three generations of Circle-Lets this past fall . . . Founding Member Ruth Martin (now deceased), CL Arnetta Hamilton (daughter), and CL Janean Overton (granddaughter).

Circle-Lets is a family affair!

Circle-Let Bahiyyah Abdullah was blessed to welcome the newest family member (her sixth grandchild) on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at 3:43 pm. The new addition’s name is Layla Ailene Abdullah. She was 9lbs 1oz and is the daughter of her youngest son, Muhammad and his wife, Lisa.

Circle-Let, Dr. Jylana L. Sheats of New Orleans, LA married Mr. Mychal Stuart of Albany New York in New Orleans on September 16, 2017. The wedding and reception were held at the new NOPSI Hotel. Jylana is the daughter of CircleLet Simone Sheats (Nashville) and sister of Jan-Nee Sheats (Nashville).

New Jersey Circle-lets gathered for a private luncheon at Despana Restaurant, in Princeton NJ. Members indulged in lively conversation while enjoying the authentic flavors of Spain and listening to the sounds of live flamenco and Spanish jazz.

CL Anna Battle and her sisters, Janet Hooks, Memphis, TN, Pamela Donan, Alpharetta, GA, have been taking an annual trip together for 25 years. This year they went to the W. A. Perry Middle School in Columbia, SC. The school was named after their grandfather William Augustus Perry who attendedYale in 1907 and Harvard in 1933. After a wonderful visit, they proceeded to The Cloister at Sea Island.

Circle-lets enjoyed a delightful afternoon of authentic Mexican cuisine while sharing local news and family updates.

Passing of Circle-Let Anna Cherrie Epps, Ph.D. New Orleans Circle-Let Charter Member Peacefully passed away surrounded by loved ones the morning of Thursday, May 18th at her home in Brentwood, Tennessee. Born in New Orleans, LA on July 8, 1930 to the late Dr. and Mrs. Ernest Cherrie, Sr., she married Dr. Joseph Epps, Sr. in 1968 who preceded her in death in 1984. Dr. Epps attended Corpus Christi Elementary School and Xavier University Preparatory School.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Howard University, a Master of Science degree from Loyola University, and her doctoral degree from Howard. In her sixty-two years of work in medical education, Dr. Epps served as professor, department head, and research fellow. She went on to become both Assis-

Circle-Let Annette Strickland was recently named Executive Director of The Schumann Fund for New Jersey, a private foundation that invests in the areas of early childhood development, vulnerable children, public policy within the State of New Jersey, and community based social service organizations in Essex County, New Jersey. Annette has been deeply involved in state

Circle-Let Sister Linda D. Frederick receives inaugural ‘Above and Beyond’ Award

tant Dean and later Associate Dean of Student Services at Tulane University, later being named interim Vice President of Academic Affairs at Tulane. While at Tulane, Dr. Epps developed MEdREP (Medical Education Reinforcement and Enrichment Program for Minority and Other Disadvantaged Students). MEdREP helped prospective medical students prepare for the MCAT and gain experience with lab projects. In 1997, Dr. Epps was named Dean of the School of Medicine at Meharry Medical College, making her not only Meharry’s first female dean of the medical school, but also the only AfricanAmerican woman with a Ph.D. to become dean of a U.S. medical school. Dr. Epps served as dean until 2002. In addition to dean, Dr. Epps went on to serve as Senior Advisor to the President of Meharry and was named Dean Emerita of the School of Medicine. Cheri officiating. A memorial in Dr. Epps’ honor will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 10 o’clock in the morning at Meharry Medical College, Kresge Resource Learning Center Auditorium, Nashville, Tennessee. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Anna Cherrie Epps, Ph.D., Center for Educational Development and Support at Meharry Medical College.

On February 17, 2017, the first Southern University Board of Supervisors’ “Above and Beyond” award was presented to Circle-Let Linda D. Frederick. Gloria B. Moultrie - Vice Chancellor for Community Outreach/University Advancement at SUNO, described Frederick as a quintessential leader in the Department of Student Support Services (TRiO) for 9 years and Upward Bound (TRiO) for ten years. “She has an opendoor policy for all program problems and interests, and is willing to offer her advice and professional expertise when needed,” said Moultrie.

The “Above and Beyond” Award was established to help inspire and motivate Southern University employees to reach their maximum performance. “This award honors outstanding achievements in the workplace, exceptional contributions toward efficiency and effectiveness of operations, special efforts in promoting workforce excellence, or outstanding service to the University community and constituents,” said Southern University Board Chair Ann A. Smith. Recipients of the award are nominated by their peers, the top three nominations are forwarded to the Board of Supervisors Chair and Vice-Chair for selection.

Circle-Mate Luther Stewart was inducted into the International Association of Anesthesiologists, the world’s most prestigious organization for the specialty. Following his induction, Genevieve and Luther took off for their favorite resort, The Marquis in Cabo San Lucas. Genevieve had no complaints about a second trip to Cabo within four months. Ole’!

Lisa Cooper Hudgins and Jim held a fabulous wedding for daughter Dr. Eva Hudgins to Richard Kerby on June 24. The wedding was held under a tent at their fabulous waterfront home. We wish the newlyweds the best of everything that life has to offer. Eva is doing a residency in Dermatology at Northhwell Health. Lisa and Jim are also eagerly anticipating the arrival of their first grandchild. Son Randall and his wife Wilmina are expecting a baby girl. Wilma will be a very busy mom as she continues with her Plastic Surgery Residency. continued on page

Darri and Hamil Willoughby recently returned from a cruise aboard the Celebrity Solstice of Australia and New Zealand.

In July, Hamil once again accompanied a group of dental students to provide much needed care to the children in Madagascar.

Denise and Dennis Walcott have been enjoying retirement and traveling the world. In July, they made a pilgrimage to Scotland and Norrthumbria to visit sites of early Christian abbeys and monasteries, some dating as far back as 600 A.D. In November, they were in London to tour Bloomberg’s London headquarters, including the Temple of Mithras installed in its original site-7 meters below street level. It was built circa 240 A.D. and has exhibits of Roman artifacts dating back to the beginning of Londonium. The temple and artifacts are open to the public and well worth a visit.

The holiday season found many of our members in a whirlwind of social activities. It was great to run into Circle-Lets’sisters Carla Young (Sarasota), Lynn Bowman (Boston), Henri Moore (Philadelphia) and certainly there were others.

As always, it was a fun and festive season.

We are very busy with final preparations for our Conclave in July. Hope to see you in Brooklyn!

In the last few issues of CCC we shared our love for and stories of Mary “Bunny” Yergan Hughes celebrating her work in Circle-Lets and wishing her well in her expected move to be nearer to family. Sadly, Bunny passed just before Christmas.

We’d just enjoyed her company at our Holiday Luncheon Meeting, so the news hit us especially hard. Bunny had served as chapter president during whose tenure Philadelphia hosted the 2004 conclave. She had been Chapter Historian, advisor to subsequent chapter presidents, contributing member to many committees and had recruited new members. Bunny was always cheerful, complimentary, thoughtful and giving of her accumulated wisdom. For some of us who grew up with Circle-Let mothers and aunts we lost a mother. For all of us, we’ve lost a great, wise and beautiful friend.

A New President of Cheyney University The Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education has named Circle-Mate Aaron A. Walton President of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania for a term beginning November 15, 2017, through June 30, 2021, to ensure stable leadership while the university implements a multi-year financial plan. Founded in 1837, Cheyney is the nation’s oldest historically Black institution of higher education. Walton has served as Cheyney’s Interim President since May 2017.

Circle-Mate Wendell was a Tuskegee Airman, a Civil Rights attorney, and a Powerful Advocate for the poor and disenfranchised. He devoted seventy years to fighting injustice wherever he found it, from the age of Jim Crow to that of Barack Obama as evidenced throughout the film. Copies of the documentary will be available for purchase early 2018.

Prior to his arrival at Cheyney, Mate Walton was previously employed by Highmark Inc., where he was one of nine principle officers responsible for providing overall management and direction of all of the organization’s corporate activities. Additionally, he has served on more than 35 community boards.

Welcome Home Circle-Let Cecile and Mate Eric Springer have just welcomed their daughter, Christina and her family back to Pittsburgh, after a three-year sojourn in California. Google is growing fast in Pittsburgh and Christina’s husband, Norman, was recruited back to Pittsburgh. The Springers are elated that they will spend more time with their 14-year-old grandson, Winston.

Cecile continues to be noted in Pittsburgh with recent awards: The Spirit of the 19th Amendment in 2017 and the 7th Annual Pittsburgh Circle of Courage Award that honors persons of Faith and Courage.

A New PA State Board of Education Chair The Pittsburgher appointed by the governor to head the State Board of Education has held several board positions for educational institutions and headed a nonprofit that assists poor black communities. Gov. Tom Wolf appointed Circle-Let Karen Farmer White to the position on December 22, 2017. Ms. Farmer White, who previously served for two terms on the State Board of Education and the Board’s Council of Basic Education, will become the first African-American chair.

2017 Artist of the Year November 17, 2017 is a date that the sister of Circle-Let Judith Davenport, Jo-Anne Bates, will never forget. Years of work, years of dedication, and now, a high honor bestowed—she was named Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (PF/PCA) 2017 Artist of the Year. The Artist of the Year award, according to a PF/PCA news release, recognizes an individual, established in their field, who has displayed significant and enduring artistic contributions to the region, and provides support for them to create a new body of work for exhibition. Bates has received numerous awards for printmaking, and she has held solo exhibitions in Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, and West Virginia.

This was Roanoke’s fourth cycle (time) hosting the conclave and we returned to the site where we first hosted, The Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center.

“Getting to Know You, Getting to Know All About You” was the theme for our social Wine & Champagne Mixer for members to become more acquainted with each other and our Circle Mates.

Our journey towards hosting the 56th Annual Conclave began approximately ten years before as we started working to make sure that our event was both fun and memorable for all who would attend. As we worked our chapter went through many changes, multiple members transitioned, and a few left our circle for various reasons. We gained new members and re-dedicated ourselves to make sure that we met all of our plans and goals in a timely manner. I think that you would all agree with me that the Roanoke Circle-Lets, and our Circle-Mates, put together a wonderful event!

I would like to personally thank each and every member of the Roanoke Chapter for all their hard work. Each and every member of the Roanoke Chapter is to be commended for their commitment and for hanging in through the long planning and successful execution of our plans!

Circle-Let Theresa Rogers and Circle-Mate Robert Rogers are so very proud of their grands Ariana Brooks (17) and Devin Brooks (13) of Shawnee, Kansas. Ariana is an active & engaged senior at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School in Shawnee, Kansas where she has been on the school’s honor rolls all 4 years. This fall, she was inducted into the National Honor Society and the National Spanish Honor Society.

Ariana will graduate in May, 2018 with numerous honors and is planning to attend the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas in the fall 2018 to pursue a curriculum in medicine.

Devin is an active 8th grader at Trailridge Middle School in Shawnee, Kansas where he has been on the Honor Roll since 7th grade. In addition to his academics, Devin is also an active baseball player and plays on the Ravens baseball team . . . and he LOVES sports!

CL Carla and Circle-Mate Julius Young celebrated the promotion of their son Preston Young from Senior Attorney to Counsel at IBM Corporation’s prestigious legal department in Armonk, New York where he specializes in Mergers and Acquisitions.

Preston received his law degree from St. John Law School, New York, and an MBA from University of Michigan, Ross School of Business in Ann Arbor. As a Captain in the U.S. Airforce, Preston served as a JAG lawyer representing the U.S. Airforce. His past expertise also includes representing IBM as a patent attorney processing cases before the U.S Patent and Trademark Office. With this promotion Preston has received the admiration and respect of IBM’s entire legal department, including its lawyers and management.

CL Joyce Jeffries White of the Sarasota/Bradenton Chapter recently published her memoir entitled ‘SOAR’ A Journey of Faith, Hope and Survival.’ This true story describes the author’s struggle to beat the odds of acquiring higher education and ultimately tells of a life well lived. Staged in New York City, the book depicts some aspects of black family life in the small world of Harlem and is available in soft cover or ebook on Amazon.com.

La!! Following a light dinner and brief meeting agenda, please be prepared to uncork your creativity and release your inner Renoir...everything else will be provide,” the invitation read. And it was. Wine, and so many different kinds of tasty delights with a French flavor and then out came the canvas, paint and brushes and an instructor standing at the ready to guide us through painting an iconic scene of the Eifel Tower. Several members had never attempted to release their creativity through painting, but by the end of the evening, they all felt like pros. The accompanying photo will show you the results.

Washington, D.C. Circle-Let Christmas Luncheon 2017

Circle-Lets, family and friends celebrate the holidays.

The holidays are all about spending time with your friends and family. The Washington, D.C. Circle-Lets did just that. On December 3, 2017, the Washington, DC chapter hosted its Annual Christmas Luncheon at the Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The celebration started with family and friends gathering for cocktails and conversations. After cocktails, the celebration was moved into the dining area. From scrumptious appetizers to mouthwatering dessert, lunch was festive and tasty.

Our next foray was to a Mexican/American Fusion Restaurant near Marina Del Rey. Combining a Mexican breakfast with a typical American breakfast was interesting. Tamales and eggs, hash browns, hot sauce and avocados, tortillas and sausage chorizo among other unusual combinations. All lightly accompanied with tequila margaritas or vodka bloody mary’s.

After a summer break, we were back to food tasting at a wonderful Creole/Cajun restaurant. Too many dishes to describe, but delicious and typical of any good restaurant in Louisiana. A seafood lover’s paradise.

Wonders upon wonders, a club member with all the right connections, given the excitement coast to coast that this play has engendered, was able to get center seats for “Hamilton” at an unheard of “good” price for our club members. We ate at a downtown restaurant before going into the theater and were well fortified to enjoy the rapping, singing production of this exciting play. It may not have been the Big Apple, but it was a Los Angeles winner, hands down! Of course everyone insisted that they understood every word of the rap lyrics, although a few were seen looking surreptitiously at their iPhones during intermission trying to figure out what the next scene was about.

Continuing the essence of the Hollywood experience, we then made our foray into the world of television with a healthy dose of real world politics. Another member who works for CBS TV provided tickets to see Bill Mayer live on his season finale. It was a blast to say the least. The audience was fully and loudly engaged and they were all types and ages. Our members were totally in sync with the crowd, laughing and clapping, some even yelling out their approval of Bill Mayer’s quips and New Rules.The show’s guests were good, but can anyone match Mayer’s sardonic and pointed “point of view”? After the show, the club walked to “The Grove”, a few steps away, to feast on an All American barbeque dinner.

New Chapter President Circle-Let Richardene Brewer spends time with family and friends.

Our new Chapter President, Circle-Let Richardene (Deanie), had a busy month this past August. She, along with childhood friends vacationed for a week on one of South Carolina’s Sea Islands, Edisto Island. Deanie also traveled with her Husband, Circle-Mate David Brewer, to Santa Barbara, California where the couple had a fabulous weekend. In October, Deanie was in NewYork visiting with her daughter, where the two of them had a wonderful time dining and attending horse races.

CONGRATULATIONS to Circle-Let Cynthiana Lightfoot and Circle-Mate William Lightfoot’s son, William Joshua Lightfoot.

This past summer he graduated from George Washington University’s Law School. He passed the Washington D.C. Bar and was recently sworn into the D.C. Bar. In keeping with our collective commitment to see more of each other, a delightful afternoon was spent as guests of the Los Angeles Valley Chapter in the Valley. San Fernando Valley that is. The elegant restaurant’s private room was decorated with pumpkins, witches, fall leaves and more Halloween inspired touches. Games were played that taxed our mental acuity and gifts were awarded to those who managed to win.

West Los Angeles members met new members of the Valley Chapter and described to them how long each had been a member of CircleLets and why they had enjoyed the association over the years, some for as long as fifty years. The tasty luncheon was followed with table hopping and conversation and then as the members left, each was presented with a “goody bag” to remember the afternoon of sisterhood.

Other news: Joyce Gordon stayed in the USA last year, but took a mini vacation to Las Vegas with her daughter, Kai, where they saw the productions, “La Reve” at the Wynn Hotel and “One” re Michael Jackson at Mandalay Bay. She is quite proud of her extended family. Grandson Jean Pierre, a colorist at AlenMFemme Coiffure in Los Angeles, also travels to work at the same salons in New York and Miami. Her grand niece Nina was named to both the 2016 and 2017 Women’s Soccer All Golden State Athletic Conference Team and her grand nephew, Alex completed his senior year at San Jose State in Aeronautical Engineering and is continuing training to become a Commercial Pilot.

Kim Lee and her husband Tony, on a 17 day trip to China, traveled from Beijing to Shanghai to Hong Kong where they celebrated their third wedding anniversary. Kim said they walked the Great Wall, saw the Terra Cotta Warriors, among many other memorable sights, and had what they call the trip of a lifetime.

We are looking forward to 2018 and many more good times with our families and Sisters in the Circle.
