A Message From Our National President!

Greetings Circle-Lets!

Our motto is “To so live that my friends are made happier!”

And as Circle-Lets, we strive to make our friends happier in a variety of ways. As our Circle-Lets prayer reflects, the language of friendship is not words, but deeds and actions. Therefore, remember to pray for your friends in the Circle, call your friends in the Circle, listen to your friends in the Circle, help your friends in the Circle, and love your friends in the Circle.

And, we also want to celebrate our “Circle-Lets having fun in the Circle!” Please make sure you read the section in this newsletter that highlights fun and memorable activities of the chapters in our Circle. These activities may encourage your chapter to think of unique and fun activities that will create fond memories for years to come!

Speaking of fun and memorable activities, the 56th Annual Conclave will be held in Roanoke, Virginia, July 20 – 23rd! Let us renew, rekindle, and refresh our friendships by joining the members of the Roanoke Chapter for an exciting weekend of fine dining, shopping, museum tours and much more. I look forward to seeing you there!

The spirit of friendship lives on in Circle-Lets and remains “a bond firm and true to the end, and far, far beyond the horizon!”

Cooke Fifty Years in Our Circle of Friendship On December 4, 2016, Atlanta Chapter, Circle-Lets, Inc. celebrated their 50th year with a fabulous brunch/party at the exclusive 103 West. 150 guests danced to the incredible sounds of Kollaboration until we were put out of the facility. Our president Sonya Dean Walston welcomed our guests, resident chaplain Karen Webster Parks delivered the grace, our and Azira G. Hill, our oldest active member saluted CircleLets with an emotional toast.

This memorable brunch was chaired by Johnnie Booker.

When A Child is Born – so is a Grandparent Circle-Let LaVerne and Keith Clark are proud new grandparents of Baby Zuri Lynn Simmons. She was born December 23, 2016 at 8:58 pm weighing seven pounds and three ounces. Zuri means beautiful in Swahili. Of course LaVerne and Keith are telling the whole world about their ‘new Love,’ Zuri!

Rev. Karen Webster Parks Our own, KK received a Masters of Religion and Public Health in December 2016 from Emory University Candler School of Theology. She created a national project on racial reconciliation and graduated with a 3.9! We are truly proud of KK’s most recent accomplishment! She will be serving as Chaplain at Emory University.

For Louisiana, August 2016 brought a historic 1000 year flood event to the state now referred to as The Great Flood. The flooding killed at least 13 people and damaged 150,000 homes, including the homes of three of our Baton Rouge Circle Lets: President Jacqueline Vines Wyatt, Judge Lisa Woodruff White and Mauretta Hurst Elbert. Installation of Officers On November 12, 2016 the Circle-Lets of Chicago installed their newly elected officers. We want to thank and praise our outgoing President, Linda C. Chatman, for her guidance, efforts and attention to detail as our chapter prepared for the 55th Conclave in Chicago. We welcome our new, President, Valee L. Salone, Vice-president Deverieux Tate, Secretary M. Elayne Granger, and Treasurer Sheri Bradshaw. We look forward to our continued fellowship and Circle of entertainment, caring and fun.

Welcome to Our Circle Our induction ceremony was hosted by Circle-Let Fay Green at the November, 2016 meeting. The afternoon was marked by a scrumptious luncheon intermingled with introductions and lively conversation.

The Chicago Chapter is proud to introduce our three new members. Gale Baker is an educator and retired Principal. She is a founding member of the South Central Section of the National Council of Negro Women. When weather permits, Gale can be found joyously on the golf course.

Adrienne Barnes, a Pediatric Dentist, serves the most vulnerable segment of the dental population. She maintains a commitment of service to the Chicago Food Depository as well as other philanthropic organizations.

Tracy O’Bannon was born in London, England and emigrated to the United States at 10 years of age. She now enjoys her position as a flight attendant. Her hobbies include yoga, reading and salsa.

Emotions of Happiness, Pride and Joy. We are delighted to announce that Circle-Let Linda Chatman, is thrilled to welcome an addition to her family; baby Mason James Golden. Little Mason is the son of Circle-Let Linda’s younger son Bruce and his wife, Marie. Linda will lovingly be called “LaLa” (not Grandma).

Mason has already doubled his weight and is doing very well.

With Heavy Hearts Sadly, Circle-Mate, Henry “Jay” Turner, MD., has made his transition. He was the husband of Circle-Let Patricia Turner and father of our Legacy member, Deborah Fortier, Esq. Patricia, a Charter Member of Chicago’s Chapter in 1959 and National President from 1987-1989 is now an emeritus member.

Deborah serviced as Vice President in 2016. We extend our condolences to his family and to the chapter members across the country in the loss of Circle-Mate “Jay” Turner.

Good News: Circle-Let Paula Kraft and her Circle-Mate Leon are pleased to announce that their son Jacob graduated from the Southern University Law Center in December 2016. His hooding ceremony was held on Friday, January 6, 2017. Jacob is now in the process of preparing to take the Louisiana Bar Exam. He is expanding his job search beyond the State of Louisiana in the hopes of finding a position that will help him to further his career goals.

Finally, I want to share with you that I proudly marched in the Women’s March in New Orleans on January 21. As State President of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Louisiana, I marched in solidarity with coalition partners to remind our elected officials that we expect them to protect the rights of women, their families and their communities.

If you check out the New York Times website for pictures of the Women’s March in New Orleans you’ll see an AAUW sign that I am holding! How cool is that?! It was an awesome day. I am reminded of a line in an Eagle song that goes, “I haven’t seen this spirit since 1969”. Well, for those of us around during those years of the Civil Rights Movement and the women’s rights movement, it was a tumultuous time of change, but voicing our spirit of indignation at the denial of civil rights made this country a better place. So speak up! Stand up! Show up!

Circle-Let Elayne Granger received the Chicago Defender Women of Excellence Award for inspiring others through her vision and leadership, exceptional achievement and participation in community service. Also, Circle-Let Elayne has served as Chicago’s Chapter Secretary. Congratulations, Circle-Let Elayne.

Circle-Let Stacey Knowles completed her Fellowship in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy at the University of Illinois. This Fellowship focused on hands on specialized research based techniques geared towards the evaluation and treatment of patients with orthopedic diagnoses. This certification is the second highest certification a physical therapist can achieve in their profession. Congratulations, Circle-Let Stacey.

Circle-Let Carmen Collins experienced golf at its most historical last year when she visited and played The Home of Golf: The Castle Course-St. Andrews Links in St. Andrews, Scotland. A golfer’s dream!!

BIG NEWS: The Dallas City Council voted to rename Union Station to honor longtime U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson.

The transit station will now be called Eddie Bernice Johnson Union Station. The renaming coincides with Union Station’s 100th anniversary. “She was a pioneer,” Mayor Mike Rawlings said. “She is a heroine of Dallas like few have ever been.” The dedication and renaming of the transit station will take place in February …so more to come. Circle-Let Eddie Bernice is Vice President of the Dallas Chapter.

Our last event of the year was our annual Christmas Party which was held at the beautiful Hampton Hall Lakehouse. It was well attended by Circle-Lets and their Mates. There was a lot of laughing, eating and bonding especially with our new Circle-Lets. What a beautiful celebration of the Christmas Season. We are eagerly looking forward to the New Year.

By Circle-Let Kimberly Watts Remembering CL Daphne Smith CL Daphne began this club year as President of the Nashville Chapter, which is a testament to her love and admiration for our organization. She was an ideal friend and truly lived to uphold our motto . . . “To so live that my friends are made happier.” Daphne passed way on January 7, 2017, however, we have fond memories to sustain us in the years to come. Our current Nashville Chapter President, Arnetta Hamilton is Daphne’s god-sister, and Arnetta’s daughter (Janean) is Daphne’s god-daughter. The Nashville Circle-Lets are truly a “family” of friends and we will not be the same without Daphne, whom we loved dearly.

We have two new chapter officers this year – Mary King, President and Pamela Taylor, Vice President.

Congratulations!

Pamela Taylor recently returned from a bus trip to Cuba. She toured several cities while there and reflected on the country’s classic cars and its beautiful architecture. It was a wonderful trip!

Annice Wooden visited the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. and was invited to the White House by Michelle and Barack Obama.

While our chapter meeting was taking place, several daughters of our chapter members, including Chrystal Evans Bowman and Jocelyn Smith, attended the Women’s March Los Angeles in Downtown LA. Lastly, Circle-Let Pat Daggett would like to thank all of the Circle-Lets across the country for the cards and phone calls on the passing of her husband, Circle Mate Gene Daggett. She appreciates your kindness and well wishes.

By Circle-Let Bonnie Hawkins Greetings from the Hilton Head Chapter! First and foremost let me say we are truly thankful that all of our members came through the October hurricane with property damage only. Of the surrounding area, the Island was hit hardest.

Our chapter is excited to have installed four new members, Rosalind Hollis, Jeanette Jones, Pamela Potts and Dr Marcia Thompson. We are thrilled these beautiful ladies decided to join us and we are looking forward to getting to know them and their Mates.

Thanks Chicago Chapter for a wonderful fun filled 2016 Conclave. President Effie Moon and I had major difficulties getting to Chicago. This was due to the meltdown of Southwest Airline’s computer systems. But, we persevered and were very happy we did. We had a wonderful time. Chicago, you did an outstanding job. Thanks!

THE UPSIDE OF GRIEF

by Circle-Let Barbara Wood: A year ago when I posted my daughter’s obit many people told me that by the next year I would feel very differently than the despair I then felt. The mind stays sane because it is too busy taking care of your pain wracked body to have a pity party in the head; the word “empathy” has a new found understanding and meaning that I can use in a truly informed way; you can see the hidden pain of others and help them maneuver the shadowy path to lightness; (everyone hurts in some way from a stubbed toe to the ultimate they can bear at the time); it is alright to wear your emotions on your sleeve because the kindness of strangers is real. They really care and are really helpful; you find out who are your friends, they pop out of nowhere or everywhere; life forever looks different (that can be a good thing); discovering the joy of ordinary things. There are more that come to mind an escape just as quickly, the deadline defeats me.

Greetings and heartfelt wishes to all for happiness, health and prosperity in the upcoming year!

New Jersey Circle-Lets celebrated the season with our annual holiday luncheon held at the picturesque Spring Lake Manor on Saturday, December 10, 2016 in Spring Lake, New Jersey. Circle-Lets and Circle-Mates in attendance enjoyed an amazing cuisine, thought-provoking conversation, and an invigorating fun-filled afternoon.

Many of our Circle-lets and Circle Mates are celebrating achievements, and successes across the garden state. CircleLet Bahiyyah Abdullah was honored on September 24th with the 2016 Women’s Advocate of the Year Award by the Ocean County, NJ Advisory Commission on the Status of Women. Bahiyyah was recognized for her outstanding advocacy work in the area of women/girl leadership, civil rights, diversity and the arts. The award was presented to her at a breakfast event attended by a packed house of family, friends, colleagues and community leaders.

Circle-Let Bahiyyah Abdullah is also to be congratulated on her promotion in 2016 to Chief Mission Officer for the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore.

Together with their parents, Bethany Danielle Andrade, daughter of Circle-Let Karen Andrade-Mims, and Muhammad Siddiqu celebrated their marriage on December 4, 2016 at the beautiful Azul Fives Hotel in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Fifty-seven family members and friends traveled with the bride and groom to the Mexican Riviera for a fun-filled weekend of activities. Guests enjoyed a welcome cocktail party on the beach on Friday night, sight-seeing and/or pampering at the spa on Saturday, with the rooftop wedding Sunday. Following the ceremony, there was dinner and dancing at the Grand Garden Pool Deck. The amazing evening culminated with a “Happily Ever After Party” that lasted into the wee hours.

The next day, the couple left for a luxurious honeymoon at the adults-only El Dorado Spa Resort & Hotel in Riviera Maya.

Circle-Let Sheila Snell received her Lean Six-Sigma Green Belt Certification in November 2016. She has added her Green Belt to her initialYellow Belt she received a few years back. This certification will assist in her career at Merck in continuously improve processes and make work more streamlined.

The New Orleans Chapter of Circle-Lets, Inc. hosted family and friends at their annual fall luncheon on November 12, 2016 at Muriel’s restaurant, in the famous French Quarter. The New Orleans Chapter President, Circle-Let Lauren Barial welcomed everyone and invited them to enjoy an afternoon of excellent cuisine and socializing. Special thanks to the luncheon committee chair, Circle-Let Susan Ducre Gipson, who made arrangements for this lovely affair and Circle-Let Brendolyn McKenna for leading us in the song, “That’s what friends are for.” continued on page 7

Also, on December 10, 2016, the New Orleans Circle Let’s Chapter gathered over the Christmas holiday to celebrate the season. Circle-Let Annabelle Blue opened her Uptown New Orleans home and introduced her Circle-Lets sisters and guests to her Puerto Rican cuisine. The evening included cocktails, hos d’oeuvres, and socializing. Much to our surprise we were treated to a complete menu of Puerto Rican cuisine. The menu included gumbo seasoned with sofrito, pulled pork, tamales, and traditional Christmas Puerto Rican delicacies. To cap off the evening each guest was given a bottle of homemade coquito (Puerto Rican eggnog). All in all it made for an evening muy Bueno!

Cheryl McKissack’s daughter Deryl Felden graduated from George Washington University with a degree in Organizational Science in May. She has moved to Los Angeles and would like to be in touch with CircleLets families in the area.

Denise Walcott reports that CircleMate Dennis was named Queens Tribune’s Person of the Year 2016. He is continuing his commitment to public service as President and CEO of the Queens Library System. Congratulations to him!

CircleLets on the move: Brendajean Prothro and CircleMate Gerry are in Barbados enjoying the warmth and sunshine.

Darri Willoughby and CirkcleMate Hamil will soon be on their way to Barbados also. Betty Pearsall and CircleMate Bryan spent the holidays in Arizona visiting son Khalid and the grandchildren. They came home long enough to unpack their bags and repack for a trip to Zermatt, Switzerland where Bryan was skiing and Betty was taking the opportunity to relax, sightsee, and shop. Andrea Goldson is looking forward to a once in a lifetime vacation, an exciting cruise of the Far East. She is flying to Singapore, boarding a ship and sailing to Thailand, Sri Lanka, and 3 ports in India, visiting Mumbai, Oman and Dhabi before heading home. One more thing to cross off her bucket list! The New York CircleLets started off the holiday season with their annual party held at the Swan Club in Roslyn that was attended by most of the members and their families and friends. The beautiful waterfront setting set the stage for a lovely party with delicious food and drink and lots of dancing.

Members were seen at several other holiday events held by the Boule, Comus Club, Fellas and others.

A great time was had by all at our fall opener, sharing stories of the summer past, catching up on activities and hearing plans for our new year. First, we offer congratulations to Circle-Let Regina Meacham-Devero, whose granddaughter, Morgan Alaba, graduated from Wilmington University with a major in Psychology. Morgan will be applying to graduate school in the near future.

Many Circle-Lets attended Opera North’s 40th Anniversary fundraiser at the beautiful castle at Arcadia University in November. Members enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, wine and a silent auction followed by a wonderful concert by Carmen Balthrop who has performed at the White House, Carneigie Hall, the Met, and internationally. Several of our Circle-Sisters are involved with the Opera North: Circle-Let Coralie Barksdale is Vice President of the board of directors, and Circle-Let Renee Allen is a board member.

We are proud and excited to mention our “Hidden Figures” connections. Two of our Circle-Sisters are daughters of women celebrated for their achievements as “human computers” at NASA. First, Kathryn G. Johnson featured in the movie, is the mother of former Philadelphia Circle-Let Joylette Hylick. As a guest at our Christmas Luncheon, Joylette shared stories of

Niko Konan reports that CircleMate Ryanne has been in the news, being interviewed by the major television networks relative to his legal case against GOOGLE,YAHOO, and BING asserting the right to remove oneself from those search engines as a private person. It is the first case of its kind and is receiving international attention.

Strength, grace, intelligence, beauty and humility run in her family. The second connection is Ida Haddon (nee Bassette), mother of Circle-Let Phoebe Haddon. Ida worked for the NACA at Langley Field in Virginia, and was featured in the book Hidden Figures. She supervised a group of so-called computers and was employed in the late forties and and early fifties. As a child, Phoebe knew some of the women and heard stories from her mother about their work solving equations.

The chapter gathered at Movie Tavern to see these women’s stories light up the screen and learn about how their commitment and talents influenced our country’s history.

For our Winter Holiday Party we returned to the Flourtown Country Club. The chapter used the occasion to honor our most seasoned members: Circle-Lets Willadine Bain, Mary “Bunny” Hughes and Gloria Williams. Willadine has the distinction of being the sole surviving, active charter member of our chapter formed in 1960. She has served as chapter secretary, a frequent Christmas party committee member, chapter photo album curator and recruiter of new members. Willadine currently serves on our Conclave committee. Bunny previously served as chapter president, during whose tenure the Philadelphia Chapter hosted the 2004 conclave. She has also served as our chapter historian, advisor to subsequent chapter presidents, contributing member to numerous committees and has recruited new members. Bunny is always cheerful, complimentary, thoughtful and giving of her accumulated wisdom. Gloria has been a member since 1964. She was a 2004 Conclave cochair. Additionally, she served as our chapter photographer and the designer/ creator of all our party invitations and creator of the chapter’s photo albums.

Circle-Let JoAnn Bradley provided memories for her children, Circle-Let Candyce Wilson and her husband, Mel, and JoAnn’s son, Trey Williams and his wife, LeTresa with a 7-day Smooth Jazz Cruise to the Carribbean. We also went to dinner and to see the play, “Having Our Say” about Pittsburgh’s the Delany Sisters. Great time!

Rock It Science, a program which provides hands on science experiences. This has been the core of his home education.

Christina was very busy in 2016. She consulted on the script for a television show in pre-production, exhibited her visual artwork at The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, and continued designing and publishing her fabric and gift wrap line on Spoonflower.

Recognition for Lifetime Achievement Circle Mate Aaron A. Walton, spouse of Circle-Let Gloria, received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the 100 Black Men of Western Pennsylvania during its 30th Anniversary Gala on October 29, 2016 in Greentree, PA. Aaron is a retired Senior Vice-President of Corporate Affairs for Highmark Health, Inc. During his tenure at Highmark, he served on more than 35 community boards, and whole-heartedly supported the public service endeavors of the 100. He is currently a member of the California University Council of Trustees and Vice Chair of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Board of Governors.

Since the birth of twin granddaughters, Angelica Marie and Anabella Michelle Walton, in April 2016, Aaron and Gloria have spent much of their time in Henderson, NV with the girls.

The twins are the second set of girls born in 87 years in the Walton family. Aaron’s older sisters were identical twins. Gloria and Aaron’s son, Aaron David, and wife, Angelina, are the happy parents.

Finally a Girl Circle-Let Andrea Mahone and Mate Glenn were delighted to welcome their third grandchild, Akasha Niahmh Inez Mahone.

She joined her brothers, Eamonn (10) and Gabriel (8). She was the first girl born in 26 years on Andrea’s side of the family.

The proud parents are Glenn R. Mahone II and his wife, Denise Mahone, Ph.D., a psychologist in private practice.

The Jack and Jill Presentation Ball 2016 The Jack and Jill (J&J) Biennial Presentation Ball held on December 30, 2016 at the Omni William Penn Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh was a truly impressive event of historical significance. According to The Genesis of the Presentation Ball, a remembrance by Judith M. Davenport, D.M.D., the ball was due to an event that happened 35 years ago. CircleLet Judy Davenport’s daughter, Allison, was a senior at the Ellis School Katherine Ermintrude Davenport in Pittsburgh. During the spring of Allison’s junior year, all her friends were talking about the upcoming Cinderella Ball in December. Allison’s name and several of her classmates’ names were submitted for participation; all but Allison were invited to participate. She was devastated. Judy had an idea, since she had been a debutante in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Cotillion in the 50s. She called several J&J friends with children the same age. The mothers met informally to discuss a ball. At the time, Judy was President of the Pittsburgh Chapter of J&J, and sug-

Successful Transition to California Circle-Let and Past National President Cecile Springer and Circle Mate Eric shared that their daughter Christina and her family have completed their second year in California.

Christina’s husband, Norman, is thriving as a Senior Software Engineer in Google’s Corporate Engineering Department. Her son, Winston, 13, spends his time as Teaching Assistant for

Mr. Washington’s expertise and business achievements attracted the attention of small and large companies such as Sprague Goodman and PNC, America’s eighth largest bank in 2015, on whose board of directors he had served. He was a member of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, which includes Western Pennsylvania. Mr. Washington also served on the board of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, the largest not-for-profit health insurer in the region.

Milton Washington had received numerous awards and recognitions, far too many to list here. A man of deep faith, he was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church for more than 20 years.

Saddened that he is no longer in this physical world, but blessed that he ascends to his Heavenly place are his widow, Nancy; daughters, Linda, a New York physician and Lara, president of AHRCO; granddaughters, Courtney and Zoe; grandsons, Kendall and Tanner; sons-in-law, Gregory Armstrong and Ken Spruill, fraternity brothers, business colleagues, friends, and especially the members of the Pittsburgh Chapter.

The initial Presentation Ball was spectacular with the young ladies in floor length white gowns and the young men in white tie and tails. It was so well received, and generated such great press that the Pittsburgh Chapter of J&J voted to host it every other year.

Kendall Milton Thomas This year Dr. Davenport was selected to be the Legacy Chair of the 17th consecutive Presentation Ball.

She was especially pleased to be given that distinction because her granddaughter, Katherine Ermintrude Davenport, a senior at Shady Side Academy; and Kendall Milton Thomas, a junior at Shady Side Academy and grandson of Circle-Let Nancy Washington, Ph.D., who served on the first ball committee, are the first legacy children to be presented. Additionally, Liza Blair Wilson, granddaughter of Circle-Let Margaret and Circle Mate Thomas Lisa Blair Wilson Burley was also one of the presentees. Liza is a Joan of Arc Scholar at Oakland Catholic High School. The ball benefitted the Gateway Medical Society’s Mentorship Program, Journey to Medicine, and the Jack and Jill of America Foundation.

A Fond Farewell Unfortunately, the Pittsburgh Chapter ends on a sad note. Milton A. Washington, the beloved Circle Mate of Circle-Let Nancy D. Washington, Ph.D., departed from this life on October 22, 2016. Milton was an extremely successful husband, father, friend, and businessman who was well known throughout the Pittsburgh region. He lived a “Life Crowded with Service.” Milton Amiger Washington was born in Philadelphia to Eleanor Amiger Washington and Milton Washington.

Milt was introduced to Nancy Duckrey by a mutual friend in 1959. It was love at first sight, and they married in 1960. Mr. Washington earned an MBA degree at Temple University.

He served his country in the U.S. Army Reserve Corps. Milton and Nancy moved to Pittsburgh in 1968.

She retired to Sarasota after a stellar career in Educational Administration and civic leadership in Arlington TX where her tenure included serving as President of the Texas Medical Association, Board President of Tarrant County Aids Outreach Center, President of the Arlington Chapter, Jack and Jill of America, Inc., and various leadership positions in Delta Sigma Theta Inc, National Negro Women, NAACP, and other associations. In Sarasota, she is the President of the Bradenton/Sarasota Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, a Board Director of the West Coast Black Theatre Troupe and member of ASALH. She is married to Dr. Donald Johnson, a retired Gastroenterologist.

The couple are also patrons of the Arts.

She was also a Reporter for the Caribbean News Agency (CAA) in Venezuela. She is married to Carl Battle who is among the few African American Patent Attorneys in the nation. Carl recently retired from Glaxo Smith Kline as Sr. Vice President and Global Patent Counsel. In Sarasota, Charmaine is an active member of MASALA, Inc. and The Society Incorporated - Florida Suncoast Chapter for the Arts. The couple is patrons of the West Coast Black Theatre Troupe.

Dr. M. Vicki Wacksman, President of the Sarasota Bradenton Chapter and husband Circle Mate Dr. Sheldon Wacksman recently returned from a 52-day “Tales of the South Pacific Cruise” glowing from the WOW experiences they had. The cruise allowed the couple to spend two days in Honolulu with their son Daniel and his family before visiting 24 islands in the South Pacific. They snorkeled with stingrays and sharks in Bora Bora, Tahiti, Samoa, Tonga and other islands. They saw firsthand the world’s most beautiful coral reefs and marine life.

The main attraction was the charming, gentle, and graceful people they met. While extremely diverse in cultures, the glue that bonds the people of the Pacific is their genuine hospitality.

In western societies wealth is based on the accumulation of goods. In Pacific societies it’s based on how much you give.

A smile cost nothing but it is priceless. Hence, everyone smiles at everyone. Circle Let Vicki found the custom of the Polynesian men’s responsibility for cooking, amazing! She found it refreshing to learn that in their culture, men would be insulted to have their wives cook. She concluded “It was a WOW travel experience and highly recommended.”

By Circle-Let Aurelia Brooks West Los Angeles Chapter members decided to hold their Christmas holiday celebration in January rather than December this year, as members worried that other festivities might conflict, diminishing attendance at their annual event. And so, on a breezy, clear Saturday afternoon, the club met at Hal’s Restaurant in Marina del Rey to experience his new blending of Mexican and American cuisine. Hal’s has been a “go to” place for several years on Abbot Kenny Drive, one of the few walking neighborhoods in Los Angeles, serving delicious selections of American styled foods. In a newly acquired space on Abbot Kenny, an enhanced menu was created that has appealed to the diverse crowd of Angelinos and visitors who frequent the area. It was a wonderful afternoon that continued the club’s exploration of interesting restaurants and hopefully good food. A “Wine Tasting” train ride to the Santa Barbara, CA city is in the works for later this year.

The Roanoke Chapter 56th Conclave July 20-23, 2017 Roanoke Conclave Chairs, Circle-Lets Janice Burks and Stephanie Anthony on behalf of the Roanoke chapter invite Circle-Lets from across country to mark their calendars for July 20-23, 2017 to attend the 56th Conclave in Roanoke, Virginia. They’re busy preparing to hostess a grand time in the “Star City of the South”. This year’s conclave theme is “Celebrate with the Star City Circle-Lets.”The Roanoke Chapter is experienced in hosting conclaves. This is their 4th time with four members participating since their 3rd conclave. They’re completing a full circle because the Hotel Roanoke was the site of their first Conclave. The hotel’s charm and hospitality have remained after several renovations since that initial conclave. In a picturesque setting the Hotel Roanoke, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, located in downtown Roanoke is surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains.

There are restaurants, shops and galleries in downtown Roanoke uniquely connected to the Hotel Roanoke by the Market Square Walkway, a pedestrian bridge over rail tracks. Also for those golf enthusiasts there is the Homestead Golf Course and nearby Greenbrier casino and golf course.

Co-chairs, Janice and Stephanie, who have held National Circle-Let Offices, have enjoyed preparing with the Roanoke chapter for this conclave. Janice served as National President and Stephanie as National Corresponding Secretary in 2007-2009. Their advice to those chapters who have upcoming conclaves is to start preparing early and collecting assessments. Also, they recommend the Conclave Protocol Handbook as a great reference tool for all chapter members to review. (Conclave delegates received a copy at the Chicago conclave 2016).

Circle-Let Roz and Circle-Mate Adrian Wade (Roanoke) Dancing usually occurs during Conclaves. Often on the first night at the Welcome Reception when we are reacquainting ourselves with new and old Circle-Lets and CircleMate friends and during the Saturday dinner dance. You may remember a couple who appear to have arrived fresh from” dancing with the stars” on the dance floor amongst us. They smoothly glide across the dance floor in rhymatic sync doing either a cha-cha, bop, waltz or salsa. For those who don’t know them, the couple is Roanoke’s own, Circle-Let Roz and Circle-Mate Adrian Wade.

Interestingly, they met years ago, at the Hotel Roanoke during a workplace holiday party.

Circle-Mate Adrian was the invited friend of Roz’s coworker. After their first meeting and dancing away the hours they later married and have been dancing together since.

CL Roz says that they thoroughly enjoy dancing and do not participate in competitions.

All types of music appeal to them and they both believe that dancing is a great form of exercise. Roz’s ultimate dream of an enjoyable evening is dancing with her Circle-Mate Adrian after a good meal. A dream she often shares with her Circle-Mate, Adrian. In 1996 Circle-Let Roz joined the Roanoke Circle-Lets Chapter. Currently she is retired and enjoys sharing time with her wonderful Circle-Let friends. She and Circle-Mate, Adrian, always look forward to attending conclaves. Roz’s sister, Stephanie Anthony, is a Roanoke Circle-Let, too. Circle-Let Stephanie is the 2017 Roanoke Conclave CoChairperson. When you’re at the Roanoke Conclave look for Circle-Let Roz and CircleMate Adrian as they captivate us with their dancing while having fun in the Circle.
