GRUSSWORT DES SCHIRMHERREN Liebe Meeresfilm-Festivalbesucherinnen und Besucher! In seinem dritten Jahr ist CINEMARE schon zu einem Markenzeichen der Kieler Kultur geworden. Die Meeresfilmfestivalpartnerschaft zwischen CINEMARE und dem IOFF San Francisco International Ocean Film Festival ist der erste konkrete Kulturaustausch der Städtepartnerschaft mit San Francisco. Als Teil dieser Partnerschaft fördert CINEMARE den internationalen Austausch und die Völkerverständigung. Daher ist es mir eine besondere Freude die Direktorin des IOFF, Ana Blanco, in Kiel zu begrüßen wo sie zur feierlichen Eröffnung des Meeresfilmfestivals im Kieler Rathaus am 24. Oktober ein »Memorandum of Understanding« mit dem CINEMARE unterzeichnen und die Festivalpartnerschaft besiegeln wird. Auch national wächst das Meeresfilmfestival. Der im letzten Jahr eingeführte Deutsche Meeresfilmpreis wird 2018 zum zweiten Mal an der Förde vergeben und mit der Kategorie Wissenschaftskommunikationspreis schärft CINEMARE sein wissenschaftliches Profil. Meeresschutz und das hierfür notwendige Bewusstsein ist dabei keine Frage des Alters. Gemeinsam mit dem Kino in der Pumpe bietet das Meeresfilmfestival ein Seniorenkino an und erweitert seinen Bildungsauftrag mit speziellen Schulvorstellungen für Kieler Schüler*innen vom 22. – 26. Oktober im CinemaxX Kino. Hier können die jungen Zuschauer*innen die gesehenen Filme mit Meereswissenschaftler*innen und -schützer*innen im Anschluss diskutieren und bekommen mit dem Film »Wonders of the Sea 3D« von Jean-Michel Cousteau sogar eine Deutschlandpremiere geboten. Mit der Uraufführung des NDR-Films »1918 Aufstand der Matrosen« zum Festivalabschluss im Metro Kino im Schlosshof steht CINEMARE auf für Demokratie und bringt die Arbeiter- und Matrosenräte zum Jubiläum zurück an den Ort, an dem sie vor 100 Jahren in der Gastronomie »Schlosshof« den Aufstand geplant haben. All dies zeugt von der Wichtigkeit des Meeresfilmfestivals an der Hörn. Der Stadt Kiel ist es wieder eine besondere Freude, das CINEMARE in den Kinos der Stadt begrüßen zu können. Uns allen wünsche ich auch in 2018 ein tolles CINEMARE Meeresfilmfestival mit faszinierenden und engagierten Filmen sowie allen Nominierten viel Erfolg! 10

Dear Visitors of the Ocean Film Festival Kiel! In its third year CINEMARE has already become a trademark of Kiel’s culture. The ocean film festival partnership between CINEMARE and the IOFF San Francisco International Ocean Film Festival is the first actual cultural exchange of our sister-city-partnership with San Francisco. Being a part of this partnership CINEMARE promotes international exchange and intercultural understanding. Therefore it is my pleasure to welcome the director of the IOFF, Ana Blanco, in Kiel where she will sign a »Memorandum of understanding« with CINEMARE to seal the festival-partnership during the Opening Ceremony at Kiel City Hall on October 24th. Kiel’s Ocean Film Festival is also growing nationally. The »German Ocean Film Award« established last year, will be awarded for the second time here at the Kiel Fjord this year. With the Science Communication Award, CINEMARE strengthens its scientific profile. The protection of and the awareness for our oceans is not a matter of age. Together with Kino in der Pumpe, the Ocean Film Festival offers a screening for senior citizens and underlines its educational mission with screenings specifically designed for students at the CinemaxX movie theatre from October 22nd – 26th. Here the young audience will have the opportunity to discuss the films with marine scientists and ocean conservationists. The student programme also features the German premiere of Jean Michel Cousteau’s new 3D documentary »Wonders of the Sea«. With the world premiere of the NDR film »1918 The Sailors’ Revolt« at the festival’s closing event at Metro Cinema, CINEMARE stands up for democracy and takes the screen version of the worker’s and sailor’s council back to the exact location where they planned the rebellion a hundred years ago All of this attests to the importance of the ocean film festival at the Kiel Fjord. It is a great pleasure for the City of Kiel to once again welcome CINEMARE to the city’s movie theaters. GRUSSWORT DES FESTIVALLEITERS Liebe Festivalbesucher*innen, Filmemacher*innen, Jury und Gäste des 3. CINEMARE Internationales Meeresfilmfestival Kiel! Zum dritten Mal bringt CINEMARE im interdisziplinären Spannungsfeld zwischen Filmkunst, Meeresschutz und Wissenschaftskommunikation gemeinsam mit der OCEAN MIND FOUNDATION faszinierende Filme über das Meer und dessen Bewohner an Land und auf die Leinwand und macht so die blaue Welt im Kinosessel erfahrbar. Im Internationalen Jahr des Riffs zeigt CINEMARE über 60 lange und kurze Filme aus der ganzen Welt. Im Anschluss an alle Vorstellungen können die Zuschauer mit Meeresschützer*innen und -wissenschaftler*innen über die Filme diskutieren. Neu im Programm sind Vorstellungen speziell für Schulklassen, das Seniorenkino, die Fotoausstellung BLUE VISIONS sowie die Videokunst, welche 2018 jede Kinovorstellung einleitet. Der Wissenschaftskommunikationspreis wird dieses Jahr zum ersten Mal vergeben und in Kooperation mit Sky Ocean Rescue ist der Meeresschutzfilmpreis erstmals dotiert. Über das Zentrum für Schlüsselqualifikationen der CAU Kiel bietet CINEMARE auch in diesem Jahr wieder Praktika für Studierende an. Studierende der Fachhochschule Kiel unterstützen das Kieler Meeresfilmfestival mit einem MobileReporting Team und aus der Muthesius Kunsthochschule kommen ganz neue Impulse für die Festivaleröffnung im Kieler Rathaus, die am 24. Oktober auch Dank der Firma Light Instruments in einem ganz neuen Licht erstrahlen wird. Zusätzlich zu unserem Printmedienpartner, dem ARTE Magazin, setzt die erstmalige Medienpartnerschaft mit dem Schleswig-Holstein Magazin und der NDR1-Welle Nord ganz neue Impulse. Die Meeresfilmfestivalpartnerschaft mit dem San Francisco International Ocean Film Festival IOFF bringt noch mehr internationales Flair an die Förde. Last but not least ist es dem Rückhalt im Kieler Rathaus zu verdanken, dass CINEMARE bereits in seinem dritten Jahr zu einem »Markenzeichen der Kieler Kultur« werden konnte. Dear audience, filmmakers, jury and guests of the 3rd CINEMARE International Ocean Film Festival Kiel! For the third time CINEMARE and the OCEAN MIND FOUNDATION bring the latest films about the ocean and its inhabitants on land and onto the cinema screen, letting the audience experience the blue world in their cinema seats. Films range from film art and ocean conservation to marine science communication. In the international year of the reefs, CINEMARE screens more than 60 short and feature films from all over the world. After each projection there is an opportunity to discuss the films with ocean conservationists and marine biologists. A new addition to the program are screenings specifically designed for school classes, as well as screenings for senior citizens. New as well are the photo exhibition BLUE VISIONS and the video art that will be shown at the beginning of each screening. For the first time the jury will decide on the science communication award, and in cooperation with SKY Ocean Rescue, CINEMARE can offer a cash prize for the ocean conservation award. Through its internship program CINEMARE offers credit points to students of the University of Kiel, and the University of Applied Sciences. The Muthesius Art University will give a whole new spin to the festival’s opening at City Hall, which will be illuminated by Light Instruments. In Addition to our media partner the ARTE magazine, the TV station Schleswig-Holstein Magazine together with the radio station NDR 1 will partner with CINEMARE for the first time this year. The partnership with the IOFF International Ocean Film Festival from our sister city San Francisco will bring more international flair from the Bay Area to the Kiel Fjord. Last but not least it is with the support from Kiel City Hall that in its third year CINEMARE has become a brand mark of Kiel’s culture. GRUSSWORT Im Laufe eines Jahres hat ein Team aus überzeugten und leidenschaftlichen Menschen ein Programm zusammengestellt, das den Zuschauer und Betrachter im tiefsten Herzen erreichen soll. Das Gesehene und Erlebte soll einladen zum Eintauchen, Reflektieren, Nachdenken, Diskutieren. Deshalb engagieren wir uns auch in diesem Jahr im Rahmen des CINEMARE Internationales Meeresfilmfestival Kiel. Denn nur, wenn rationale Einsichten durch Emotionen und Empathie gestärkt und vertieft werden, wenn Wissen vermehrt wird um Respekt, Zuneigung und Demut, dann wird die Bereitschaft zur spürbaren Veränderung wachsen. Die Ocean Mind Foundation ist davon überzeugt, dass nicht nur klassische sondern gerade moderne, sogenannte »immersive« Medien neue Möglichkeiten bieten, den Zuschauer nicht nur an der Oberfläche, sondern vielmehr im tiefen Bewusstsein zu erreichen. Die experimentelle Nutzung modernster Technologien erlaubt es, hochkomplexe und ungemein relevante ökologische und gesellschaftliche Zusammenhänge aufzuzeigen und über Kunst und Kultur unmittelbar erlebbar zu machen. Initiativen und Themenbereiche der von der Ocean Mind Foundation präsentierten Filme, Bilder und Installationen sind auch im dritten Jahr des Festivals ebenso vielschichtig wie das Meer selbst. Wir freuen uns sehr, nach mehr als fünf Jahren Entwicklungs- und knapp drei Jahren Produktionszeit das 3D Fulldome Projekt »Die Buckelwale von Hawaii« exklusiv im Kieler Mediendom präsentieren zu dürfen. Im Rahmen eines Vortrages beschreiben die Macher die Hintergründe dieses weltweit einmaligen virtuellen Tauchgangs in die geheimnisvolle Welt der Wale. Auf ausgewählten Veranstaltungen werden wir erste Einblicke in unser aktuelles VR (Virtual Reality) Projekt bieten, konzipiert für Kinder und Jugendliche, aber auch für Erwachsene erlebenswert: einen virtuellen Tauchgang mit dem Forschungs-Tauchboot JAGO. Das Erscheinungsbild des Festivals und die damit verbundene emotionale Aufmerksamkeit liegt uns sehr am Herzen. Nur einer der Gründe, weshalb wir auch in diesem Jahr die Entwicklung des Designs und der gesamten Außendarstellung begleiten und unterstützen. Die Schulvorstellungen im CinemaxX mit spannenden Gästen aus der Welt des Filmemachens und der Wissenschaft sollen Kinder und Jugendliche sensibilisieren und neue Horizonte eröffnen. Gleiches gilt für die BLUE VISIONS Fotoausstellung im Metro Kino: 14

Die Bilder blicken hinter die Kulissen aktueller und vergangener Ocean Mind Produktionen: eine visuelle Reise von Hawaii über Norwegen bis nach Grönland und Spitzbergen. Unser Dank geht an alle, die CINEMARE stetig wachsen lassen. Over the period of one year, a team of dedicated and passionate people yet again put together a program that will reach every viewer and observer at the bottom of their hearts. The films watched and experienced in the cinema halls will invite to dive in, reflect, think, and discuss. That’s why we at the Ocean Mind Foundation are a part of the CINEMARE International Ocean Film Festival Kiel again. Only by strengthening rational understanding through emotions and empathy, by adding respect, affection and humility to knowledge, willingness for noticeable change can arise. The Ocean Mind Foundation is deeply convinced that not only the classical media, but especially the modern so called immersive media offers more possibilities to touch the viewers not only at the surface, but deep in their mind. After 5 years of planning and 3 years of production, we are thrilled to present the 3D Fulldome project »The Humpbacks of Hawaii« at an exclusive event at the Kiel Mediadome. There the makers of this film will talk about the background of this worldwide unique virtual dive into the mysterious world of the whales. During selected events at the festival we’ll show first insights into our recent VR (virtual reality) project, a virtual dive with the submersible JAGO. Designed for children and teenagers, this viewing experience is of course also suitable for adults. The festivals’ appearance and the emotional attention connected to it is very important to us. This is just one of the reasons, why together with Fargo in Hamburg we strengthen the design and appearance of the festival. The school screenings at CinemaxX with interesting guests from the world of movie making and science will encourage the children and teenagers and broaden their horizon. This is also the idea behind the Blue Visions photo exhibition at Metro Cinema: The pictures show past and recent Ocean Mind productions: a visual journey from Hawaii to Svalbard via Norway and Greenland. Die Menschen, die heutzutage auf See unnötig ertrinken? Die Zerstörung einzigartiger Lebensräume? Wenn wir der Trauer Raum und Ausdruck geben, können wir dann einen Weg finden empathisch zu handeln? Lamenting is an ancient tradition still widely practiced, mainly by elderly women in the Mediterranean countries. They publicly lament the loss of a life. The artist refers to this practice placing the figures at the seaside. What are they grieving for? The many people lost at sea nowadays? The destruction of unique natural habitats? Caused by their love to nature and water it is often surfers who search for the source of the pollution. Damit gehört der Kieler Matrosenaufstand zu den Schlüsselereignissen der deutschen Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts und hat die Grundlage für die erste deutsche Demokratie gelegt. Das Dokudrama verwebt die Spielhandlung mit historischem Bildmaterial aus Kiel sowie Berichten von Zeitzeugen. Im Interview reflektieren die Politiker Björn Engholm und Sahra Wagenknecht sowie Flottillenadmiral Kay-Uwe Schönbach die Bedeutung der Ereignisse für den Beginn der deutschen Demokratie. Gedreht wurde u. a. in der Schiffswerft Georg Howaldt und in der Marineschule Mürwik. Nominated for the German Ocean Film Award • The sailor’s mutiny in Kiel was the initial spark for the revolutionary movement which took possession of the German Reich in November 1819 and caused the fall of the monarchy and the end of World War I. Because of that the sailor’s revolt in Kiel is one of the key moments of the German history of the 20th century and provided the basis of the first German democracy. The documentary-drama interweaves the film-action with historical footage of Kiel and reports of contemporary witnesses. In interviews politicians such as Björn Engholm and Sahra Wagenknecht as well as flotilla admiral KayUwe Schönbach reflect the meaning of the events for the beginning of the German democracy. To some extend the material was filmed in the shipyard Georg Howaldt and in the Marine School Mürwik. 70

Ocean Mind Foundation und CineMare. In Hinblick auf das 3. Internationale Meeresfilmfestival 2018 in Kiel gibt die Ausstellung Einblick in das Schaffen der Ocean Mind Foundation und zeigt, wie sich Menschen aktiv für den Schutz der Ozeane und seiner Bewohner einsetzen. Die Bilder vermitteln Einsicht in aktuelle und vergangene Ocean Mind Foundation-Filmproduktionen, die im Rahmen des Festivals gezeigt werden. Zu sehen sind faszinierende Aufnahmen aus Hawaii, der Kinderstube der Buckelwale, Island und Grönland sowie Bilder vom Dreh des aktuellen 360°-Virtual-Reality-Wissenschaftsfilms für Kinder über die Fahrt mit dem Tauchboot JAGO vor der Küste Norwegens. Fotografen: Daniel Opitz, Barne Peters, Ida von Saltzwedel und Tiffany Winn Kuratiert wurde die Ausstellung von Katja Vedder, die sich in ihrer Arbeit seit vielen Jahren dem Thema Kunst und Ozean widmet. Präsentiert von der Ocean Mind Foundation und CINEMARE. Die Ausstellung ist bis zum Dienstag, den 04.12.2018 im Foyer zu den Öffnungszeiten des Metro-Kinos zu sehen. Der Eintritt ist frei.
