Portland International Jetport Runway Project

ork at the Jetport began in May 2004, after Cianbro was awarded a Runway Expansion Contract from the City of Portland, Maine. The project included lengthening the primary runway by 400 feet, upgrading the navigational aids, replacing the approach light structures, and installing runway centerline and touchdown lights on a 7,000-foot long runway. It was necessary for much of this work to be completed in the summer months—days and nights—prior to the scheduled six

day runway shutdown in early September. Shutdown work involved completely repaving and striping the runway, finalizing the earthwork and light foundations in the safety area, and tying in the runway lights. Cianbro crews immediately began work last spring on the foundations for the electrical regulator building, emergency generator building, and electrical substation. Tom Gallagher led the civil crews through this effort which was completed on schedule. Once the buildings were complete, the focus shifted to the construction of 45 concrete approach light bases, a 650foot long blast deflector, and a localizer antenna foundation.
Just around the corner, Paul Belanger and crew members were busy constructing two very large concrete manhole structures as part of the runway drainage system. While our electrical crews were waiting to take over the regulator building, they remained very busy bringing the primary power to the site while also assembling and erecting the light pole structures. The electrical team was led by O’Neil Boivin, Marty Roach, and Aaron Wedgewood. As soon as the concrete was set, our structural crews, led by Bill Moulton, went to work on the steel structures which included an antenna array platform, blast deflector, and a catwalk bridge that spanned over the Maine Turnpike. When the day finally arrived for the shutdown, Cianbro crews were poised and ready for the challenge ahead. With careful planning and prep work civil and electrical crews formed, reinforced, and placed a 250-foot long, 110-cy concrete light bar all within 24 hours! Thanks for the great effort by our hard working team. Special thanks also go to our subcontractors for the critical work they accomplished. Shaw Brothers Construction moved a corner of the earth to the City of Portland with over a quarter of a million cy of material placed. Moulison North Corporation worked diligently to set over 300 light bases in the runway and to complete the associated electrical work. Blue Rock Paving did an outstanding job laying their 45,000 tons of pavement—27,000 in just the first few days of the shutdown! And finally, we would like to thank Pine State Safety Lines for their paint marking efforts. The runway shutdown was a complete success thanks to the dedicated efforts of everyone involved. Work was wound up last fall and was complete by year’s end. Several small crews will return this year to complete the remaining items in the contract.

Self Serve Cianbro’s Team Member Portal has been enhanced to include a “Self Serve” module and an Electronic Pay Stub module. Tim Flewelling and Gary Smith from Corporate MIS worked with Corporate Payroll and Human Resources to develop these applications for Cianbro team members who have a connection to the Internet. Electronic pay stubs have the added benefit of saving time and money. As owners of our company, team members can save the cost of printing, handling, and mailing paychecks and deposit advices by enrolling in this exciting new benefit. This option is available to all Cianbro team members.
CIANBRO CHATTER
Electronic Pay Stubs Team members who have 100% direct deposit, Internet access, and an email address, are eligible to receive their pay stub information through the Team Member Portal. The electronic pay stub looks similar to a printed deposit advice. Team Members who enroll have the benefit of seeing their pay information for the prior week on Wednesday afternoon. Also, pay stubs for the past 12 months are available for viewing or printing. To take advantage of this benefit, team members first need to enroll in Team Member Self Serve on the Team Member Portal. The next step is to enroll in Electronic Pay Stubs. On Wednesday afternoon of the next pay period, an email will be sent to the team member to advise
