Drama Group celebrates with Big Maggie

Offer expires 15th April 2016

Fifty years ago as the state marked the fiftieth anniversary of the rising a different kind of drama initiated in Wexford town with the foundation of Wexford Drama Group. The group now proudly kick start a year of celebrations to mark their fiftieth next week when their first production of 2016 hits the Arts Centre Stage. Big Maggie the John B. Keane classic has been chosen to be the first production of Wexford Drama Group's fiftieth year and an excellent cast has been working for many months under the direction of South East Radio's Alan Corcoran to bring this Irish masterpiece to life. Big Maggie has just finished an extended sell out run at the Gaiety Theatre in a professional version featuring Aisling O'Sullivan in the title role so Wexford Drama Group were delighted when they secured the rights to stage their own version of this very popu-

lar play. The play focuses around Big Maggie Polpin and her attempts to keep her family together after the death of her husband. The dialogue crackles with hilarious, caustic putdowns as the indomitable Maggie deals with her feckless family and unwanted suitors. Everyone wants a part of Big Maggie and her property, but she has other ideas. The play features a mix of new faces and experienced players from Wexford and stars Louise Dillon in the title role, who, according to director Alan Corcoran, gives "A performance that would rival any that have gone before". Mr Corcoran also said that "the play has gone excellently in rehearsals and features some new faces to the stage that will turn a few eyebrows". The usual Wexford Drama production team surrounds this to ensure no stone is left unturned to give Wexford another

excellent production to rank with any over the past fifty wonderful years. Big Maggie is currently on the leaving certificate and this is the perfect opportunity for students to see it. This production opens at Wexford Arts Centre on Wednesday 13th of April and runs to the following Sunday and tickets are available now. Call 0539123764 or book online at wexfordartscentre.ie. The show is proudly partnered with The Yard Restaurant in Wexford Town where a special early bird deal will be available to all theatre goers on presentation of their tickets and a glass of Prosecco will be available after the show in T. Morris' Bar to sweeten the deal. For more information on Wexford Drama Group and their plans for their Fiftieth anniversary check the group out on Facebook and Twitter or call 0863859925. You’re in the right place.

The cosmetic acupuncture is perfect for anyone looking to restore and revive a youthful and radiant look to his or her face without undergoing surgery or wasting money on false product claims.

You can achieve your dreams and look your best for years. And you can do it now, no matter what your age.

Most recently celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Sean Connery, Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian have received acupuncture facial rejuvenation treatments.

It’s a fact that the passage of time ages everything. Think of a fine wine or aged cheese...the older, the better, right? However, when it comes to your face, looking ‘old’ probably isn’t on your top 10 wish list.

I don’t promise to stop aging; no one can. I don’t promise to take decades off your appearance. But when properly performed 12 anti-aging acupuncture treatments, can erase years and will also help you feel your best.

For example, if you are 60, how would you feel about looking 50ish instead? If you are 50, would you like to look more like 40? Or, would you simply like to have the most radiant, youthful looking skin of any woman you know your age?

I’m not against skin care products. Those that meet my strict criteria are an important part of my daily regime as well. However, chances are you haven’t received the kind of long-lasting results you want. That’s partly because creams and lotions work only the surface of your skin. ing forward to welcoming members and sponsors to the event. The weekend will be sponsored by Wright Insurance Brokers, Wexford, who will host a ‘Marquee on the Quay’ throughout the weekend, in addition to hosting a welcome party in the marquee on Friday night for all associated with the haulage sector.The IRHA’s traditional commercial display will be featured to the picturesque backdrop of the quayside where Mercedes-Benz will be the primary truck sponsor, with additional sponsorship from Rosslare Europort. President of the IRHA Ms Verona Murphy commented; “We are very much looking forward to hosting our national AGM and conference in Wexford Town this year. While there will be plenty for attendees to see and do during the course of the weekend, there will also be important decisions to be made by the membership in regards to the currently challenging operating conditions within the sector; primarily the unsustainable increase in fleet insurance over the last number of months”. Ms Murphy continued;

“The on-going migrant crisis in Europe, and in particular Calais, is creating untold difficulties for our international fleet with Irish drivers extremely fearful for their lives when travelling through Calais in particular. We are continuously incurring additional cost as a result of this current crisis and meaningful support is needed. It is of the utmost urgency that a stable Government is formed in order to progress such pressing matters”. In terms of future proofing the industry, the association will be making information available over the 15th and 16th of April on the new HGV driver apprenticeship programme that the IRHA has been awarded by Government. With 95% of freight in Ireland moved via road transport and the licensed haulage industry moving 80% of that freight, implementing effective industry succession plans are vital. With that in mind, the IRHAs new HGV driver apprenticeship programme will commence in September and interested parties are encouraged to attend the IRHA conference and obtain further details.

43rd IRHA AGM and Conference Wright Insurance Brokers sponsors the Irish Road Haulage Association Conference

Wright Insurance Brokers sponsors the Irish Road Haulage Association Conference & provides substantial insurance industry support for the new HGV Driver Apprenticeship Programme.

The wheels are in motion and the scene is set for the arrival of a showcase with a difference as Wexford Quayside will be transformed into a spectacular backdrop for a display of Trucks, HGVs and all associated with the Haulage Sector on the 15th & 16th of April. As one of the countries key port counties Wexford has a long association with the Haulage Industry and will rolling out the red carpet for all those involved with the sector. Wright Insurance Brokers has a long standing association with the Transport sector and has been providing insurance solutions to the Haulage community for over 30 years. Presently Wright Insurance Brokers handle the insurance requirements of approximately 30% of the

sector nationally. Selected as Wexford’s Large Company of the Year in the Wexford Chamber Awards, Wright Insurance Brokers will play a key role in welcoming members of the haulage community to Wexford. This welcome includes a Marquee on the Quay at which invited guests will enjoy the finest Wexford hospitality combined with a special performance by nationally acclaimed local band, Corner Boy. The Marquee on the Quay will also hold the official launch of the new HGV Driver Apprenticeship Programme, an initiative undertaken by the IRHA to develop professionalism and excellence in driving amongst Irish fleet drivers and which is being heavily supported by Wright Insurance Brokers to secure insurance industry backing. Tony Wright, CEO, Wright Insurance Brokers commented, ‘We are proud to be associated with the Irish Road Haulage Association in what has been a challenging time for the indus-

try. We are also delighted to support the HGV Driver Apprenticeship Programme which has been negotiated by the IRHA with the Government. The aim of this apprenticeship is to promote HGV driving excellence on the road by building a panel of highly skilled drivers in Ireland, ensuring that the Irish economy and business is supported in the future by a professional industry which is crucial for the distribution of our products. We are working closely with the IRHA and our panel of Insurers to secure insurance solutions for drivers who successfully complete the programme.’ The haulage industry provides

50,000 direct jobs and contributes over €1bn to the Irish economy. In excess of 95% of freight moved nationally is transported by road making Ireland one of the most reliant countries in Europe on road transport. Wexford in particular is a main hub for the haulage sector which is vital in securing the future operation of Rosslare Europort. The addition of the new bypasses & road networks in the county will ensure that we are in prime position for further growth in the sector as it becomes even easier to transport goods by road nationally and straight out to Rosslare Europort.

Mercedes-Benz is truck sponsor Mercedes-Benz Trucks has been confirmed as the ‘Main Truck Sponsor’ for the forthcoming Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) AGM and annual conference.

GER WALSH Housing crisis is not light entertainment

The fact that there is a serious housing crisis in the country is beyond doubt. It is also beyond question that many families are living in very difficult circumstances even if the concept of homelessness has changed from people living in doorways to being housed in B&Bs or hotel rooms. There is agreement across wider society and in political circles that a type of emergency now exists and must be treated as such. Indeed it is clear from the discussions which have been conducted in relation to forming a new government that housing will be a top priority for whatever new administration is formed. Against this background it is not really helpful for TV shows like the Late Late on RTE to attempt to delve into what is a very series social. Discussing the problem in between hearing the latest

from some successful entertainment star and giving away thousands of euros as a viewer’s prize really is not a good idea. On Good Friday night the show had a couple of people who are living in emergency accommodation on as guests to discuss their plight. If the object of the exercise was to present a human face of the crisis then it failed miserably. The whole thing was a crass effort with no real attempt to present a factual situation and some statements which were made needed to be challenged but were not. Instead you had the host saying on more than one occasion ‘what do you say to people who suggest that you are lucky to be living in a hotel and having your room made up’. This suggestion was simply silly because no one in their right mind would suggest that long term living in a hotel is anything

but very bad for a young family. The housing problem is serious enough and there is no need for light entertainment type television programmes to be hyping it

up. Indeed, far from furthering the case of those affected by the problem this type of effort tends to damage it.

Low pay for young workers must be addressed The teachers’ conferences last week were dominated by issues over pay, especially the pay of young teachers who earn much less than their colleagues for doing exactly the same job. The idea of cutting wages for new entrants to various State jobs won acceptance during the recession because it represented a sort of a nod and a wink way of getting pay cuts through. Union leaders argue that they were powerless to do anything about it but in reality it is hard to escape the impression that those

in jobs pulled the ladder up behind them protecting as much of their own pay and conditions as possible. This inevitably meant that if the same level of savings were to be made then new entrants would pay the price and that is exactly what happened, not just in teaching but across a wide range of employments. This result is that you now have young teachers, Gardai and health care workers who find themselves in relative poverty and unable to pay for accommo-

dation in most parts of the country as a result of the poor salaries they command. This idea of low pay for new entrants is not confined to the civil service with many quite successful private companies operating a two tier system as well. It is simply not a tenable situation for young employees in

State employment and working for highly successful private companies to be paid salaries which simply do not provide for any decent standard of living and it is one which will have to be addressed over the coming months, regardless of what type of government is formed.

Athenaeum restored to its former glory

Often described as Enniscorthy’s GPO, The Athenaeum, is a Theatre and Town Hall built in 1892 which the volunteers selected as their command post during the 1916 Rising. The volunteers occupied the building and made it their Headquarters with the Irish Tricolour hoisted on top of the building by Mrs Una Brennan, Marion Stokes and Greta Comerford. Every aspect of the Rising in the county was co-ordinated from the building and the garrison in The Athenaeum was the last in Ireland to surrender. This association with the Rising has assured the building a unique place in Irish history. At its peak it was a hugely successful theatre with many travelling dramatic companies performing on its stage. However, in more recent years it had fallen into a poor state of repair and there were genuine fears for its future until the government, in the

form of the Department of Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht, rode to the rescue last year. The building was selected as one of the Permanent Reminders of the Ireland 2014 Centenary Programme and with support from the Department it has been restored to its former glory. It will be officially opened later this month and will house the Co. Wexford 1916 Exhibition. Members of the public were given a sneak preview of the refurbished building recently and it was given a big thumbs up by everyone who visited it. It is hoped that the building, with its unique connection to the Rising and the exhibition which it will permanently house, will prove to be a major attraction for tourists and visitors to Enniscorthy in the future.

Commemorating and Celebrating in Enniscorthy Ger Walsh reflects on a great day in Co Wexford

Respect, remembrance, a great sense of pride and even strawberries and cream on historic day The Co. Council said the aim of its 1916 Commemorative Programme was to be respectful of the past and inspiring for the future. Exactly how successful it will be in terms of the latter only time will really tell but the ceremony in Enniscorthy on Easter Monday, and the entire programme, has certainly been respectful and dignified. The months, indeed years, of careful planning and hard work, were very evident in what transpired in Enniscorthy on the day. The involvement of the army as part of the State section of the ceremony brought a level of gravitas to the occasion but the local organisations and relatives, in addition to the many local performers ,each made a very special contribution to what was a wonderful occasion. A year earlier Padraig O’Gorman and his team in Enniscorthy had decided that the Market Square, scene of the traditional Easter Monday ceremony in the town for decades, would be unable to cope with the crowds. How right they were. Castle Hill provided a wonderful natural viewing platform for the thousands who thronged the street by the historic Enniscorthy Castle and they had a tremendous view of what was taking place beneath them.

Despite several thousand more than the anticipated numbers turning up there was no discomfort. The painstaking planning meant there was an opportunity for everyone to see what was going on with large screens strategically placed around the Square and beyond. Striking the right balance on an occasion like this is important. Was it a celebration or a commemoration? Commemorations by their nature can be a bit taxing on the attention span of a big crowd. This was a commemoration, but it was also a celebration and that unique mix of both meant that the large attendance was attentive throughout. This was best illustrated by tremendous respect shown for the minute’s silence, all the more remarkable because the minute seemed to stretch well beyond the normal sixty seconds, or maybe that was just my imagination. When dignitaries and relatives entered St. Aidan’s Cathedral for the Mass of Commemoration at 10am the streets of the town were virtually deserted. However, when they emerged again into the bright sunshine the footpaths were lined with people and the music of the military band filled the air. When the army is involved in any event you can be sure that things will run on time;

that people will be standing exactly where they should be; and that you could fix your hair if necessary via the reflection from the well polished boots of the soldiers. The band struck up ‘We are the Boys of Wexford’’ as the parade moved off from the Cathedral. And yes they were the boys and girls and men and women and children and babies of Wexford all joining together to cele-

brate the part played by Enniscorthy and its people in helping Ireland take the first tiny steps towards creating the nation that we have today. On the pavement young babies in push-chairs watched , some amused, some frightened. Their parents and grandparents were busy taking photographs, pictures which will be dusted down on many occasions in the years to come to remind the next generation of where they were on Easter Monday 2016. Ministers Brendan Howlin and Paul Kehoe led the parade, with an army officer marching between them and they were followed by a trio of Chains worn by Tony Dempsey, Chairman of the Co. Council, Ger Carthy, Mayor of Wexford and Paddy Kavanagh, Chairman of Enniscorthy District Council. Groups that had walked from various parishes as part of the Backroads to the Rising followed and there were hundreds of relatives in the line

up before a number of armoured vehicles, which were an imposing sight on the narrow streets, brought up the rear. There was an hour of a break before the formal ceremony began at Abbey Square with the crowds entertained by the Enniscorthy Choral Group. They are unlikely to ever have as large an audience again with more than ten thousand people standing listening to their singing. But for those who wanted something a little different there was much to occupy them. Along the quays you could enjoy, candy, cup cakes, fudge, a taste of Portugal or even strawberries and cream--------and many did, A little further down you could ‘Hook a Duck’ to win a prize or put the kids in one of the many amusements. But back at the Square it was soon time for the formal State ceremony to get underway. It fell to Paddy Kavanagh to welcome everyone in his role as Chairman of the local Council. It was a thoughtful, inclusive and well delivered address by the Chairman. He certainly did his town and its people proud on this important day. The keynote address was delivered by Public Expenditure Minister Brendan

Howlin. It was another powerful contribution which won the undivided attention of the thousands who looked on. Then it was time for the reading of the Proclamation, another powerful moment on a day filled with such images. This was followed by the laying of wreaths, minute’s silence, Lone Piper’s Lament, the Last Post and the raising of the Nation Flag on the newly constructed flag-pole in the Square. The National Anthem was sung with gusto by the crowd before the Air Corps Fly Past brought the formal ceremony to a conclusion. The men of one hundred years ago had certainly made history in the town of Enniscorthy but equally those who turned out in such numbers on Easter Monday 2016 made their own piece of history. For many years to come people will look back at the event and the sheer numbers who came to celebrate and remember in equal measure. In time those who study such things will no doubt remark that 2016 marked a certain turning point in our history as a country. The year that the masses wrestled back ownership of the events of 1916 and the part they played in the creation of the modern Irish State.

Commemorating and Celebrating in Enniscorthy

Last Post for Brendan and Paul

When a Bugler from the Defence Forces played The Last Post towards the end of the State Ceremony in Enniscorthy he did it in remembrance of those who took part in the Rising one hundred years earlier. However, it was probably appropriate for another reason too. It is almost certain that without the high powered involvement of Brendan Howlin and Paul Kehoe at government level over the past five years, but particularly over the past twelve months, a ceremony on the scale of that which took place in Enniscorthy this year simply would never have become a reality. Had the result of the election been conclusive it is possible to neither would have played a leading role in the events on the day. However, the failure of the Dail to elect a new government means that both Brendan and Paul remain in their government roles, albeit in a ‘caretaker’ capacity. They led the parade from the Cathe-

dral during which there was a stop for a moments’ silence outside The Athenaeum, a building now wonderfully restored with cash which they helped to secure. At Abbey Square Minister Kehoe inspected a guard of honour, Minister Howlin delivered the keynote address and both men laid a wreath on behalf of the Irish people. As they stood side by side listening to the Lone Piper’s Lament and The Last Post it will not have been lost on either of them that a high profile partnership which had lasted just over five years had reached its conclusion. Easter Monday 2016 and the State Commemoration will almost certainly have been the last time that the two men will lead a major event in their current roles and it was fitting that even in a caretaker capacity they should still be in place to play starring roles at an event to which they had contributed so much.

(Opposite page)The impressive scene in Enniscorthy on Easter Monday when more than 13,000 people gathered to remember the events of Easter 1916. While guests and relatives of those who took part in the Risising were seated in front of the stage the crowds packed the streets right up Castle Hill. (This page) Before the ceremony began the parade made its way from the Cathedral to Abbey Square. Wreaths were placed at the Patriot's Flag by Ministers Paul Kehoe and Brendan Howlin and councillors Keith Doyle and Paddy Kavanagh

News

One year on new road is to be dug up again The state of the roads around the county is some of the top items on the agenda of every single member of the Co. Council and when canvassers went to doors during the recent election they received plenty of abuse about the state of rural roads in particular and what is perceived to be a failure of the local authority to do anything significant to deal with the problem. Many councillors have been campaigning for months to have something done with some of the worst routes but progress is very slow. In urban areas there is a problem too with some streets in very poor repair. The Distillery Road/Bishopswater area of Wexford town was one

of those roads until last year when a major resurfacing job was undertaken. It turned a bad pot-hole riddled surface into a carpet like gem for motorists and cyclists. It was a costly job which caused severe traffic disruption. Now just one year later comes the news that the entire road is to be dug up again. It’s enough to make road campaigners like councillors Barbara Ann Murphy and Kathleen Codd Nolan weep. But it could be worse because the new road could have faced two separate digs in the months ahead when a new water main and a natural gas pipeline are put in place. However, the fact that both operators have the same

parent company means that they will co-operate and the two jobs will be undertaken at the same time. But there is no escaping the fact that the beautiful new surface will have to be ripped up and while it will be reinstated when the job is finished a dug up road is never quite the same again. There will also be the

return of extensive traffic disruption in the area which is an important route into the town. Several other parts of Wexford town also face dug up streets and traffic disruption from the end of the year as both water mains replacement works and the installation of natural gas get underway.

The Blackstairs Trilogy for Enniscorthy and Wexford

Three one-act plays telling the story of Wexford people during the revolutionary period, from 1916 to post-Civil War Ireland will be performed by Raven Theatre in Enniscorthy’s Athenaeum (April 16th) and Wexford Arts Centre (April 21st to 24th) The group proudly presents the premiere of Volunteer and The Wringing, and All-Ireland Drama Finalist Come Along The Road Until You Stop Dead. Written by award-winning Wexford playwright Eoghan Rua Finn, the trilogy is a heartstopping blend of tragedy, dark comedy and suspense and is considered a must-see show this year. The production has been backed by the Wexford County Council 1916 Commemoration Local Grants Scheme. Eoghan Rua Finn is 28 years old and was born in Dublin to Wexford parents, but has lived in Wexford for most of the past seventeen years. He has been writing plays for around seven

years. Eoghan Rua’s first produced play Come Along the Road Until You Stop Dead was selected by playwright Billy Roche as one of three winners in a playwriting competition in Wexford and was produced by Newline Theatre in December 2014. The play was then performed by Enniscorthy Drama Group in the All-Ireland OneAct Drama Festival, reaching the All-Ireland Final in Galway in December. The group won over a dozen awards on the road to the final, including Eoghan Rua winning an Adjudicator Prize for new writing. The trilogy is three stories about characters trying to come to terms with themselves, at different crisis points in their own lives, during crisis points in the life of the country. The Easter Rising, The War of Independence and the Civil War. And these events, in which the country is in upheaval, mirror in different ways the personal upheaval at the centre of each story.

Barntown had its own small 1916 centenary ceremony on Sunday when local curate Fr. John Carroll performed a special blessing at the grave of Michael Lynch - former Garda Chief Superintendent for Wexford who was a participant at the GPO in Dublin in 1916. He died in 1947 and was buried at Barntown Church.

Preparing for Patron Day Early planning important to ensure everything is just right for Patron Day

The patron season is a very important time for people in Co. Wexford. It begins in late April and continues right to the end of the summer. It is the time when people in every parish in the county take time to remember their departed loved ones by attending special patron ceremonies in the cemeteries. Across the county people make a point of returning to their home parishes for the special day of remembrance. Many who have been abroad for years return home on an annual basis for the Patron Day. It is a day when old friends meet, families have reunions and above all they remember those who have gone before them. As part of the build up to the Patron Day graveyards are a hive of activity as family members gather to carry out cleaning and upgrades to their graves. It is also the time when families of those recently deceased plan

the erection of a new headstone to mark the resting place of their loved ones. Headstones come in all shapes and sizes and a wide variety can be viewed at various Monumental Works display yards around the county. Of course you may not be looking for a new headstone but want to update the one already in place or generally just give the grave a make-over. The replacement of the script and the provision of

new ornamental stones can make a big difference to the appearance of a grave. The important thing is to plan early and make arrangements for the work you require well in advance. The patron season is the busiest time of the year for the erection of headstones and to ensure that you have your family grave looking its best for the Patron Day start making arrangements now.

News Co. Council Diary

The street cleaner is on its way.........but blink and you could miss it The street cleaning equipment is on the move in the Enniscorthy District. Once the vehicle spent all its time cleaning up the streets of the town but since the reorganisation of local government and the greater influence of rural councillors on the local authority the great cleaning machine has managed to find its way past the Blackstoops round-about and out past Vinegar Hill. The District Manager in Enniscorthy Padraig ‘1916’ O’Gorman was really pleased to be able to tell the likes of Barbara Anne Mur-

phy and Oliver Walsh, representing Bunclody and Blackwater respectively, that the street cleaner now spent some time every week in rural areas. To be precise it gets out and about one and a half days every week. One of those days is spent in Bunclody where a lot of cleaning up has obviously to be done while the other half day could see the cleaner in Blackwater, or Oulart, or Oylegate or Ballindaggin or Davidstown or Marshalstown or someplace else. But you wouldn’t want to

hold your breath to see the great machine in any of these locations because it has only one half day per week to get to them all. The astute Paddy Kavanagh observed that it would probably take the slow moving street cleaner a half a day just to get to some of these locations and then another half a day to empty its load. But what is seldom can be wonderful and at least these villages have some chance of seeing a bit of a cleanup at some stage which is more than can be said about rural roads.

The Gateway scheme which was being used for a lot of this work has hit a bit of a wall with the unions putting down some serious objections to its continued use. Talks are taking place at national level and until a range of issues are sorted out this type of work will have to be put on hold. Of course all this clean up work is only necessary because we are a dirty nation, according to Paddy Kavanagh and most people would agree with him. Meanwhile that great cemetery campaigner Barbara Ann

Council may still buy houses despite plans to build Wexford Co. Council is still in the market to purchase houses which come up for sale across the county but the focus is likely to move to-

wards construction and the provision of accommodation by voluntary housing groups in the medium term. The Council has been em-

ploying specialist staff in recent months as it gears up to get back into the construction business and this will inevitably lead to a move

away from house purchase which had been favoured in recent years as a fast track way of providing houses. However, despite the move back to construction the Director of Services with responsibility for housing, John Carley, has assured councillors that nothing will be ruled out in terms of seeking ways to provide houses for people on the housing list. He told a meeting of the Enniscorthy Municipal District Council that the local authority would always make decisions which were appropriate to the circumstances that presented at any given time and that would always involve a range of possibilities. Cllr Johnny Mythen had asked if the Council was still in the market to purchase houses saying that he believed some suitable properties were currently coming on the market. Meanwhile, it has emerged that some of the properties which were offered to Wexford Co. Council by NAMA, but rejected by the local authority, were likely to have been unsuitable for a variety of reasons. While discussions between the Council and NAMA are confidential it has emerged that in some instances that portions of estates offered by NAMA would have required massive investment by the local authority to bring both the individual houses and services to the estates up to standard. There would also have been reluctance on the part of the Council to purchase a large number of properties in a single estate with the local authority very conscious of the need to avoid creating a ghetto in any location.

Murphy can take a bow. It seems a solution may be on the way to the flooding and muck problem which plagued so many graveyards over the winter. In some instances, as Barbara Ann reported to the January meeting of the Council, elderly people could not get to their loves ones’ graves over the Christmas period. Now it seems a type of mat surface often used on golf courses is to be introduced to deal with the problem.

Not such good news for Kathleen Codd Nolan. Graveyards have also been on her mind over the winter and she has been worried about those big trees in Bunclody. Finding a solution to this will be expensive, it seems, and a full report is awaited. Whatever about the relatives, the people in the cemetery will have no problem waiting, regardless of how long it takes to bring forward that report.

House sale scheme made simple Interest in the new tenant purchase scheme for local authority houses announced at the end of last year is said to be strong and the Council will hold information sessions at various locations over the coming weeks to answer detailed questions in relation to the scheme. The Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council, Paddy Kavanagh, has urged people who are interested in buying the houses to attend the

information session. Cllr John O’Rourke has praised Council officials for the very straightforward and simple language used in leaflets explaining the scheme. It was very easily understood, he said.

Shelter needed for bus stop The bus stop at Carricklawn on the outskirts of Wexford town, close to the General Hospital, should have a shelter constructed to protect people in bad weather, a Co. Councillor has claimed. The Chairman of the Enniscorthy Municipal District Council, Paddy Kavanagh, told a meeting of the Council that he had received numerous representations on the matter. He said that many people who used the stop did so

after spending some time in hospital and were vulnerable. The lack of a shelter meant that they had to wait in the open in all weathers for the bus. People from Enniscorthy, Gorey and across the county used the stop and a lot of people would benefit if a shelter was provided. He is to bring a motion on the matter to the next meeting of Wexford Co. Council and has asked his Enniscorthy colleagues for support.

Businesses denied flood cash Government Minister Brendan Howlin and Paul Kehoe are to be contacted to see if they can assist in securing support for a number of flood victims in Enniscorthy who have been hit by an anomaly in the relief scheme. Special funds were set aside to assist businesses affected by the flooding late last year. However, a number

of business owners who had their premises for lease at the time they were damaged were denied support. However, Cllr Paddy Kavanagh told a meeting of Enniscorthy District Council that the individuals involved could not now let out their buildings until they spent money replacing the electrics and doing other repairs.
