he next local elections are still a year away and the final boundaries on which they will be fought still have to be decided but sitting councillors are already gearing up for the battle with a marathon campaign as opposed to a sprint being planned by some Council members. And the tool favoured by several councillors to conduct that marathon is social me-

dia with Gorey’s Joe Sullivan straining to be first out of the traps to deliver good news to people in North Wexford. Despite having to preside as Chairman of the Gorey Municipal District Joe still manages to find time during meetings to send out social media messages about repairs to footpaths and roadworks which are to be completed in various areas. But Chairman Joe is being

monitored by some of his colleagues and as soon as his messages began to hit social media during the May meeting of the Council Anthony Donohoe was able to report to the meeting what Joe was saying and the exact minute he said it. A slightly embarrassed Chairman suggested he had to do something to get out ahead of Malcolm Byrne.

hose of a certain vintage will have amazing memories of the Strawberry Fair and an eight-day festival that inspired the railway company to put on extra trains and the bus company did likewise and Enniscorthy was a favourite summer destination when rural Ireland led the way in enjoyment. All of that was half a century ago, but Enniscorthy still leads in the sound of music and the 51st Strawberry Fair/Street Rhythms

and Roots Festival from May 31st to June 2018 has the potential to be a hell of a celebration. Internationally acclaimed author and novelist, Carmel Harrington, will perform the official opening, stepping into John B. Keane’s famous Kerry playwright shoes half a century earlier. And the Garda Band is coming for a Sunday evening recital, which is also a throw-back to the early days of the festival, and we’ll get a chance to meet and

greet a new Strawberry Queen. Some things never change, but there is a strong programme of events showcasing the best of contemporary music, dancing, exhibitions and attractions, and then there is a flavour of strawberries and cream and good food. Don’t forget to get yourself a brochure and be sure to pop into Enniscorthy on Strawberry Fair weekend. You won’t be disappointed!

Ink is dry on Literary Festival launch

W

exford - born playwright and awardwinning novelist, Billy Roche, had the pleasure of launching the 5th annual Wexford Literary Festival which takes place in Enniscorthy on the weekend of November 2-4th, at a pleasant function held in Enniscorthy Castle. It appears to be a long way off, but Chairperson and author, Carmel Harrington, informed The Chronicle that the reason for the early summer launch was to give established and aspiring writers plenty of time to complete their compositions and have them ready for the many competitions associated with the festival. It makes perfect sense. Amongst the literary figures who will attend the Enniscorthy showpiece are June Caldwell, Sinead Gleeson (RTE), Paul Perry, Jane Casey, Shane Dunphy, Hazel Gaynor, Catherine Ryan-Howard, Dr Sarah Cleary, Caroline Busher, Paul Williams,

Cllr Barbara Anne Murphy, Minister of State Joe McHugh, T.D., and Liz Hore, Enniscorthy District Manager, at the Dublin launch of the Architectural Exhibition in Vienna featuring Wexford’s entry from Bunclody.

renowned journalist and crime writer, and Andrew Cartmel, who is a scriptwriter on the famous UK television drama, Dr Who. The various competitions – short story, short plays, poetry, and a shop window display – are memorials to some of the great local writers, Colm Tobín, Bil-

ly Roche, Anthony Cronin, and designer Eileen Gray, who was born at Brownswood House, overlooking the River Slaney, south of Enniscorthy. Cathaoirleach, Cllr Keith Doyle congratulated the groups and stated that Enniscorthy

llr Barbara-Anne Murphy has been representing Bunclody with distinction at international events and last weekend represented Ireland at the International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale 2018, called the Free Market, and exploring common spaces to be found in market towns . Enniscorthy Municipal District Council recommended the attendance of Cllr Murphy on behalf of Wexford County Council to Venice where Bunclody’s unique architecture featured strongly as part of the international exhibit. And it doesn’t end in Venice. Following the exhibition there will be a national road show in 2019 followed by a symposium on market towns and Bunclody will feature prominently.

Municipal District Council acknowledges the exceptional work and effort put in by individuals and groups in a voluntary capacity. “Volunteering is a powerful source for change, both for those who volunteer and for the wider community,” said Cllr Doyle, who added; “We are more aware than ever that we cannot put a price ón human endeavour and the contribution that people are making all across Enniscorthy

Municipal District.” The individuals and groups came from all parts of the district, urban and rural, and the precious white envelopes were distributed by Cllrs Keith Doyle, Johnny Mythen, John O’Rourke, Barbara-Anne Murphy, Kathleen Codd-Nolan, Willie Kavanagh, Paddy Kavanagh and Oliver Walsh. District Manager Liz Hore acted as master of ceremonies.

LEGACY OF 1798 IS TOURISM TARGET T he future of tourism for the Enniscorthy region is set to be centred on the events of the 1798 Rebellion and last weekend’s Vinegar Hill Archaeology Conference reinforced support for the future development of the project and got the 220th anniversary celebrations off to a flying start. Renewed interest in the Battle of Vinegar Hill has its origins in an archaeological survey which commenced four years ago and has unearthed a number of artefacts such as lead bullets, weapon fragments and a possible fragment of an unexploded shell! Places and names associated with

the rebellion that were unknown have been discovered such as the location of Beale’s Barn, the ‘green hill’ and an explanation of why General Needham arrived late on the battlefield. So there is so much more now known about the events of June 21st 1798, when a camp of 20,000 insurgents, dependant on locally forged pikes and pitch forks was surrounded and attacked by a military force of some 13,000 government troops. It is reckoned that some 1,500 rebels were killed during the assault on the hill above the River Slaney and Enniscorthy town, while fatalities for the Crown

were recorded as 22. Visiting the site shortly afterwards, Sir Jonah Barrington recorded “numerous pits crammed with dead bodies.” Vinegar Hill is one of the most important battle sites in Europe and the local plan would be to seek funding for even further scientific research. There is more to come this year. The Vinegar Hill Re-Enactment Festival takes place June 15-17th and that should be a spectacular site and a great day for spectators who can get a close up view of living history.

Time again for farmer’s All-Ireland

E

nniscorthy is preparing to celebrate the summer months with a number of events bringing enjoyment and life to the town and one such occasion is the well-established All-Ireland Farmer’s Market. It takes place at Abbey

Square on Sunday, June 17th from 9 am with the winners’ announced about 3 pm. Some of the finest food producers in the country will bring their culinary skills to an openair arena and compete for prestigious prizes, and, of course, the

all important stamp of quality and success for their produce. Application forms and other details are available from Enniscorthy Municipal District Council and best of luck to all competitors.

BARNTOWN CHOIR SMALLER BINS LEAD TO INCREASE TAKES SILVER H IN DUMPING

T

oo big our too small-------that’s the question in relation to the refuse bins at Curracloe beach. The dumping of domestic waste in the bins has been a problem for some years and the Co. Council decided to tackle the problem by removing the large bins which had been in place and replacing them with small bins. The view was that the new bins would simply be too small for people to dump their domestic in. However, it did not work

out quite like that. Because the new bins are too small for bags of refuse to be stuffed in to them the bags are left instead beside the bins. This has led to an even greater problem because dumping attracts dumping and there was a chorus of complaints over the May Bank Holiday weekend over the state of the bins in Curracloe. Local Engineer Sean Kavanagh had his own view on a solution to the problem at a meeting of Wexford Borough District Council. He said if he

has his way there would be no bins at all at beaches with people encouraged instead to bring their waste home. However, his solution was not seen as workable. Engineer Gerry Forde said the use of the small bins was a pilot project which clearly had not worked and the larger bins are now to be put back in place while other remedies are explored. He ruled out the use of CCTV to detect illegal dumpers saying this was not an option at a seaside location.

Broadways’ ‘ballroom of romance’ now a danger zone

I

t was once the Ballroom of Romance in South Wexford where love stories began for local couples. But the hall in Broadway has seen better days and is now more likely to cause local people serious injury than bring them together. The building has been de-

teriorating for years and is now in a state of very poor repair with sheets of loose galvanise swinging in the wind all around the building. Local councillor Ger Carthy warned at a meeting of Wexford Borough District Council that someone could be

seriously injured if something was not done about the building and he said he did not want to have it on his conscience. He demanded action be taken to deal with the problem before the next meeting of the Council.

TROUBLE ON WAY TO OPERA HOUSE

T

hose ladies in high heels are having real difficulties when they attend events in the Wexford Opera House due to the state of the surface on High Street. Cllr. George Lawlor told a meeting of the Wexford Bor-

ough District Council that the pavings which were put down on High Street at its junction with Mary Street were not suitable for heavy vehicles turning from Mary Street on to High Street. As a result they had been moved and dislodged

with gaping holes now appearing between them making the surface dangerous for everyone but posing particularl difficulties for ladies in high heels on their way to events in the Opera House.

Asbestos delays work on new heating system

T

he installation of a new heating system for residents of elderly people’s housing in John’s Gate Street in Wexford town has been halted because asbestos was discovered around piping in the

houses when work began. This resulted in a new tender having to be dealt with before the project could proceed further. It is now expected to be completed in mid-summer. As a result of the delay the Co.

Council will continue to pay the ESB bills for residents for another two months, Executive Engineer Mick Doyle, told members of Wexford Borough District Council at their May meeting.

eartiest congratulations go to the junior choir at Barntown Church who have emerged as silver medal winners in the All Ireland Community Games competition final which was held today in Limerick. In its first year - under the careful and talented tutelage of local school teacher Ms. Ann Stamp - the choir is still forming and looks set to grow from strength to strength in the years ahead. Singers at the 11am Mass in Barntown on Sundays, the choir enjoys much support - and gives great pride also - to the parents and parishioners of the suburban Wexford curacy. Commenting on the great performance, local curate Fr. John Carroll said that ‘this choir is a shining gem among the

Ms. Stamp and the silver medalists

many parish based groups and individuals within Barntown Curacy who strive weekly to give of their best across a multiplicity of endeavours - from church maintenance and enhancement, to school building and oversight and teaching,

sports facility provision and development.’ Looking to the road ahead, Fr. Carroll thanked Ms. Stamp and her co-workers and he spoke of the many blessings and opportunities that the road ahead will provide.

FIRE SAFETY

T

he Wexford fire Brigade Service has revealed its major programme of events aimed at educating the public on fire safety. The programme includes visits to secondary schools, taking stalls at public events and an extensive social media campaign. In a presentation to members of the Wexford Borough District Council the Fire Department revealed that in many instances to causes of domestic fires were very preventable which is why such a heavy emphasises is being placed on

education. An example of the extraordinary things which people do in their own homes was the placing of a flat screen television above a stove in a house in Enniscorthy. The TV overheated and caused a fire. Wexford has an above average number of chimney fires and the Fire Department is to carry out a systematic programme aimed at increasing awareness of the need of have chimneys cleaned on a regular basis. The county also has a problem with false fire calls which ex-

ceed the national average. Three parts of the county, Killmuckridge, The Hook and Kilmore/Carne are the areas in the county the longest distance from a fire station with response times to these areas exceeding forty minutes. Cllr. Davy Hynes said some people did not clean their chimneys due to cost and in some cases just allowed a chimney fire burn out as a way of cleaning it but he warned of the severe damage which a chimney fire can cause.

Developers who left residents in the lurch appearing again ‘in corridors of Co. Hall’

S

ome developers who left housing estates in a terrible condition in the past with residents forced to fight a losing battle to get services in place and finished are appearing again in the corridors of Co. Hall around the planning department, Cllr. George Lawlor told a meeting of the Wexford Borough Council. He said these developers who had caused such hardship for so many people in the past and just walked away from their responsibilities should not be tolerated again. But the Wexford District Director, Tony Larkin, revealed it was not just a sim-

ple matter of refusing to deal with these developers who had caused problems previously. It was a fraught and complex issue and often these individuals had been directors of companies which no longer existed and were now operating as part of new companies. He said that legally they had to be dealt with in terms of planning by the local authority. However, he said the Council was conscious of the amount of taxpayers money, both from Co. Council funds and from central government, which had gone in to fixing up unfinished estates and everything that was possible under the law would

be done to recoup monies and have works completed when dealing with these individuals under the planning system. He cited an example of a developer who had applied to carry out the next phase of a development which previously had to be completed under the unfinished estates programme. As part of that application the Council inserted a condition that those ccosts had to be paid by the developer. And he pointed out that the Council also had to be conscious of the fact that building of private houses needed to be restarted again.

Motorists pay €1.1m annually to park in Wexford town

M

otorists visiting Wexford town pay €1.1m each year in parking charges to the local authority in fees for parking on pay and display streets and Co. Council, car parks. Parking charges are to be further extended in the town as part of a countywide update of parking regulations. Two of the key areas where charges are to

be imposed in future include St. Aidan’s Crescent near Pettitts Supermarket and DistilleryRoad close to Tesco. As part of the upgrade it was revealed that the pay by phone option is on its way to the county with discussions between the Council and a service provider at an advanced stage. However, at a meeting of

the Wexford Borough District council it was revealed that the new parking app would not provide a solution to the problem of disabled drivers having to pay for parking in barrier controlled car parks. Instead that problem is to be resolved by moving the disabled spaces out of all barrier controlled car parks to the side of streets in the same areas.

WHITEROCK VIEW TRAFFIC PROBLEMS

A

new bid to have oneway traffic introduced to Whiterock Vie in Wexford town has been initiated following a petition calling for the move from local residents. The campaign for better management of traffic on the street has been going on for several years and a motion on the matter was brought jointly to the May meeting of Wexford Borough District Council by Cllr. Davy Hynes and Tom Forde. Cllr. Forde told the meeting that there were serious issues for wheelchair users and pedestrians as there simply was not enough space for ev-

Cll. George Lawlor

ery vehicle to park and Cllr. Hynes told the meeting that there were severe problems in the area with emergency vehi-

cles and he recalled an incident a number of years ago when an ambulance could not get down the street when responding to an emergency. But Cllr. George Lawlor said introducing one way traffic would not solve the problems caused by parking on both sides of the street and he stressed that anything they did needed to have the support of local residents. District Director Tony Larkin said that when a traffic survey is completed in the summer and plans are being considered residents would be consulted to get their views.

he controversial plan to build a three bungalow housing development in Barntown to accommodate the members of an extended traveller family has been taken off the agenda following a protracted procedure lasting several months and strong opposition from local councillors. Members of the Wexford Municipal District Council had unanimously shot down the proposal in April but it still could have gone ahead if a majority of members of the full Council had approved it. However, at the May meeting of the Co. Council it was agreed to send the matter back to local councillors and organise a series of meetings aimed at coming up with a resolution to the problem. At that meeting Cllr. Paddy Kavanagh said he would not like to see councillors from outside his Enniscorthy District making decisions on similar matters in his own area and he did not want to be involved in imposing a decision on the Wexford District. When the matter came be-

fore members of the Wexford Boroughl District at their May meeting Mayor Jim Moore revealed that a series of meetings had taken place over the course of the previous week and various options aimed at resolving the issued had been considered. Head of Housing Padraig O’Gorman said the traveller family in question had been contacted to access their circumstances again given the length of time the process had taken. The circumstances of the family had changed and the needs of two elements of the family were now more urgent. As a result of this change in their circumstances different options were put to the family and they had accepted one of them. Two of the three family units involved will now be housed in regular local authority houses in Wexford town which have recently been returned to the Council. Mr O’Gorman said three or four possible solutions had been examined and the proposal to house the families in two different locations in Wexford town

was the one which the family concerned deemed most suitable. In reply to Cllr. Davy Hynes he said the houses were not close together and he estimated that they were about two miles apart. The location of the properties was not revealed. Barntown councillor Tony Dempsey welcomed the development. He had been strongly opposed to the proposal to put more traveller families into the site at Barntown which already has a high concentration of travellers resident in the area. Mr O’Gorman thanked Mayor Jim Moore for the role he had played in facilitating a resolution to the problem. The plans for Barntown will now be abandoned but the Council will go back to the government to see if the cash already approved for the building of the three bungalow units can form part of the funding for a different development on the site. It is expected that the new plan will involve the building of six to eight housing units in the same space.

LAUNCH OF WEXFORD’S €26m landfill site SPORTS WHEELCHAIRS has no future

S

ports Active Wexford recently launched their brand new Sports Wheelchairs in Wexford County Council Offices. These sports wheelchairs were purchased with Healthy Ireland Funding through Wexford LCDC and Wexford CYPSC. Sports Active Wexford co-ordinator Fran Ronan spoke of the importance of these wheelchairs for inclusive sport in Wexford and Cllr Kathleen Codd Nolan Chairperson of Wexford LCDC offi-

cially launched the chairs. The chairs will be used to ensure all children and people with disabilities will have more access to physical activity and sport in Wexford. These chairs will be based in Astro Active Enniscorthy and used by the newly established Slaneyside Super Stars which is a multisports club for children with a physical disability and will also be available for use by Wexford County Council and Sports Active Wexford for additional programmes/

activities. The launch was attended by Cathaoirleach Cllr John Hegarty, Director of Services John Carley, Local County Councillors, Brendan Howlin TD, James Browne TD, Ger Mackey Wexford LCDC Chief Officer, Sheila Barrett Wexford CYPSC Co-ordinator, Sports Active Wexford Board Members, FAI and Leinster Rugby Development Officers, and The Slaneyside Super Stars.

I

t looks like the €26m which Wexford co. Council spent on developing a landfill facility at Holmestown in Barntown more than a decade ago will prove to be a spectacularly ill-judged investment because the facility, which was closed just a few years after it opened, is unlikely ever to accept waste again.

A

posed to such a prime site being sold for private development. Now the site is to be sold to Ard Aoibhinn for €100,000. Separately the old Wexford town library building in the Wellington Place Car Park, which has been vacant for several years since the opening of the town’s new library, is also to be taken over by Ard Aoibhinn. The premises is being leased by

the Council from Sam McCauley and the lease does not expire until 2027. Now the building is to be sub-let to Ard Aoibhinn for €30,000 per year, a figure which is somewhat lower than that which the Council will have to continue to pay for the property. Members of the Co. Council approved both transactions at their Mayl meeting.

ity and will continue to pay off the loan for another seven years. Council Chief Executive Tom Enright ruled out reopening the facility at the May meeting of the Co. Council and other options for the site are now likely to be examined.

prime Wexford town site which had been put up for sale on the open market by Wexford Co. Council last year is now to be sold to Ard Aoibhinn Services Ltd. for the development of a respite house and day resources. The site, beside Redmond Park, was taken off the public market following objections from councillors who were op-

In fact reopening the site as a landfill facility could end up costing the Council even more money because the Authority would have to make provision for the management of the waste and all attendant problems for years into the future. The Council borrowed the money to develop the facil-

here has been a big improvement in the finances of Wexford Co. Council since the darkest days of the recession and the Authority’s revenue deficit of €4.7m is at its lowest level in over a decade. A €530, 000 revenue surplus in 2017 helped reduce the deficit below the €5m mark. When local government reform was completed in 2014 the Council’s deficit stood at more than €10m but it has been steadily reduced during the lifetime of the current council.

The improvement has been helped by increased buoyancy in the local economy, improved collections rates for rates and charges and increases in the Local Property Tax. Chief Executive Tom Enright and council members paid tribute to Head of Finance Annette O’Neill and her team for the progress made on the finances in recent years. However, in her report to councillors Ms O’Neill said that while year on year improvements were positive there was

no room for complacency in terms of the financial position with many factors needed careful management into the future. One area which continues to be a major problem for the Council is road maintenance with massive amounts of cash required to bring many of the county’s rural roads up to standard. Council officials continue to make the case to government for improved funding for the county given the lack of investment over the years.

Packed Programme For 51St Strawberry Fair/Street Rhythms And Roots Festival

I

t’s Summertime and that means it’s festival time across the county with a host of events organised in towns and villages all the way from the June Bank Holiday weekend until the evenings begin to close in again with the arrival of autumn. Enniscorthy is the launch pad for the summer festival season this year with the 51st.Strawberry Fair combined with the Street Rhythms and Roots Festival taking centre stage on what is the traditional start to the tourist season in the county. From Thursday May 31st until Sunday June 3rd. Enniscorthy will play host to a huge array of entertainment with something to suit all tastes. It kicks off on the Thursday night with the Strawberry Festival Ball In the Riverside Park Hotel. With a Champagne Reception on arrival this is one of the highlights of the social calendar with music by ‘Wrecking Ball’ followed by DJ Tom Byrne festivities here will continue well into the early hours. At the same time those who want something a little different can head to the local Greyhound Track for an evening of racing. The official opening of the festival takes place the following evening and it will be performed by the internationally acclaimed author Carmel Harrington who has penned six best selling nov-

els with a seventh due out later this year. The 2018 Festival Princesses who will play a prominent role throughout the festival will be presented on stage immediately after the official opening and one of them will be crowned Strawberry Queen on Sunday night. As the evening moves on there will be plenty of entertainment from the bandstand with the winners of the Pub Talent Competition performing prior to Gentlemen Callers making a return to the Market Square. Saturday’s programme begins with Lifestyle fitness with Alan Wilson in the Market Square and people would be well advised to go along if they want to tackle the marathon schedule of events which have been lined up for the morning, afternoon and night of Saturday. From Baby Bops to Magicians, Face Painting and Balloon Making, an Army Band and a Bob Dylan Tribute Band and of course another chance to meet the Strawberry Fair Princesses, it’s all here. Two of the most popular events of the weekend take place on Sunday. Food Stalls will be in place in Market Square from 11am to 5pm and these have proven a real favourite with the public in the past. Young and old take great pleasure in tasting a little bit of

this and that as they stroll between the stalls. Meanwhile down in Abbey Square the Classic Car Show gets underway at 2pm and will continue throughout the afternoon. So you can pick up some food in the Market Square and then drop down the hill to Abbey Square where you can get up close and personal with some marvellous examples of splendid car manufacturing from yester year. If you prefer and indoor option you could opt for Fairytales in the Castle from 1pm or go along to the Afternoon Tea Dance in the Athenaeum where a Matchmaker will be on hand for those seeking a little love, but outdoors dancing, music and fun continues throughout the afternoon in the Market Square where the stage will play host to performers from home and abroad and will feature a performance by the Garda Band at 5.30pm. All this builds to the highlight of the weekend, the crowning of the 2018 Strawberry Queen, which will take place at 8pm with M.C. Liam Sharkey on hand to do the honours. Natty Walker and the Reggae Vibes, a Bob Marley tribute band, will bring the weekend to a lively conclusion in Market Square from 9pm.

the partnership Martin said, ‘I have been a volunteer for both the RNLI and the GAA for many years. To share what I know about life-saving with the clubs is something I never thought I would be able to do and I’m so proud of this partnership. The players who might need this advice tomorrow or next year could be sitting in the next group that we talk with at a club and that is incredible.’ Declan Long is the Ambassador for Courtown RNLI. Speaking at Croke Park he said, ‘It is great to be a part of the RNLI and the GAA working together. Being upfront and proactive about water safety will hopefully prevent some family from going through the pain of losing someone from drowning.’

ADVERTORIAL May 30th, 2018 15

ADVERTORIAL How long will it take to buildMORTGAGES my own home from foundation to finish? We’ve all seen those tragic Grand Designs episodes where the build goes on for years – and toddlers in cribs when filming started are in school by the time the house is complete. And yes, it can take years to finish a self-build; but if you’re diligent, and on track with your self-build, the timeframe from foundation to finish is roughly 26 weeks. No project is the same, and this is by no means a definitive timeline. Every self-builder is different too. You could be building on the family farm on land owned by your ancestors for generations, or on a site you’ve saved for years to buy (in the location you’ve always dreamed of). We know that this is the first time you’ve ever done this – so we’re here to help out. To start, we’ve outlined a step-by-step guide of the general steps you’ll need to complete your build. Get all the preliminary work in (6 weeks) As Roy Keane used to say, “fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.” This goes for your self-build too. There are loads of tasks you need to complete before even thinking about starting the building work. These include hiring architects, going through the planning permission stages and getting quotes off your builder. Here’s a quick checklist before you start:

MORTGAGES

Gabriela Gurdak QFA, Mortgage Master Pat Dunphy QFA EBS Wexford Tel: 053 9143516 Branch Manager EBS Wexford Gabriela Gurdak QFA, Tel:053 9143516 Mortgage Master EBS Wexford Tel: 053 9143516

1. Once you’ve found a site that suits your needs, you need to get an architects’ report. You can then proceed with your mortgage loan application and get fully approved for your EBS self-build mortgage. Once you have that in the bag, you can close the purchase of the site, get planning permission and decide whether you are going to hire a regulated building contractor or hire direct labour yourself. 2. Then you should arrange water and electricity supplies to the site, fence it off and put up public safety signs (‘hard hats must be worn’ etc). 3. You will also need insurance to cover any mishaps that may happen on-site. That’s the easy part finished. Once you have those steps completed, you can finally start to get dirt under your fingernails and start the building process. Here are the four main steps you’ll be taking. 1. Setting the site, digging the foundations and blockwork (3-4 weeks) First things first – the site and house is set out by the surveyor, and the top soil is removed. Once that is all done, it should take roughly two weeks to dig the foundation and trenches for services, pour the concrete foundation, get the damp proof course finished and pour the oversite slab. Phew. Your construction company will pour your oversite slab, which will need to be reviewed by an architect or engineer. It will take a further two weeks to get the blockwork done – up to the chimney and gables. 2. Watch as it turns from a building site to an actual house (9-20 weeks) It’s time for the superstructure to be installed, and the first floor structure (allow three weeks for this). Then, it should take around four more weeks to finish the roof and get all the windows in. The chimneys and gables come next (around one week). Once the house is waterproofed, you can do the first fixes on carpentry, plumbing and electrics. Your power points, lights, TV points as well as radiators and underfloor heating are next in line. Now your home is really starting to take shape. (Ah, the excitement!). Some people on really tight budgets have even moved in at this stage (once there’s a working toilet, hey presto). But it’s really up to you. Once the first fixes are in, you can connect to the mains water and electricity – a major moment for any self-builder – even if it’s just to plug in your kettle, so you can have that all-important first cup of tea in your new home.

At the ONE Commadore Barry Memorial Service for all national Ex-Service Personnel and to those who Died on United Nation Service Overseas at The Faythe Menorial in Wexford town were: Angie Laffan,Town Manager, Larry Shannon, Parades Officer, Mayor Jim Moore, Minister Paul Kehoe and Clr.Dave Hynes, with Chairman John Fowler and members of the Commadore Barry ONE as well as visiting members.

NEXT STOP WICKLOW FOR WEXFORD BUS

C

ontinuing the pattern of growth, Wexford Bus has announced that they will be launching a new route to Dublin City and Airport for the communities of Arklow and Wicklow Town. From the 1st June, those wishing to travel can avail of the new return service which departs from Gorey up to nine times per day. Those living around Arklow Town, Ballincore, Jack Whites, The Beehive and Wicklow Town will all be able to avail of the new route and great service provided by Wexford Bus. The last pick-up point on this new route is located at The Grand Hotel in Wicklow Town, so commuters in the area can look forward to a direct service to Dublin City & Airport. What’s more, third level students attend-

ing UCD, Trinity, DCU and the city centre based IT’s will all now have a frequent bus timetable which will make commuting in September even easier particularly for new college students. Commenting on the announcement, Brendan Crowley Managing Director of Wexford Bus said “We have listened to our customers in south Wicklow and have responded to their requests with the introduction of this new route. It will offer more flexibility to passengers and easier access to Dublin City & Airport for our customers in this area. Not only is this a great addition to our expanding network of routes but it has also brought about the creation of six new jobs within Wexford Bus.” He added “We continually strive to improve

our service so new passengers will have access to a great range of value tickets, online booking and innovative facilities such as online seat reservation for daily commuters, on-board Wi-Fi and a live bus tracker.” The 740A Route will start on Friday 1st June, departing from Gorey at 06.00am Wexford Bus is a growing private bus company operating regular scheduled bus services between Wexford and Dublin City & Airport (up 36 times per day) as well as services connecting Wexford with Waterford, Carlow and towns around Co Wexford. Wexford Bus carried in excess of 750,000 passengers in 2017, has a team of over 60 people and a fleet of 30 buses and coaches.

3. Appliances and interior installations (20-26 weeks) The walls get plastered at this stage and the kitchen is installed. This can happen at the same stage as the second fixes of carpentry, plumbing and electrics. This means that you’ll finally see internal doors, skirting boards and the bathrooms and ensuites. The fridge, oven and washing machine can be connected now (so you’ll be able to clean your clothes before hitting the building site again the next morning). Once the heavy-lifting is over, you can get set for the fun stuff – the interior decoration! Painting, decorating and furnishing will all be finished in the next few weeks. 4. Snagging your self-build (2 weeks) Now it’s time to put your new home to the test. Make sure it’s all in working order now so you won’t be caught out down the line. This is also the time to put the finishing touches to your home. First off, check the exterior and get your BER assessment. Next, check for any internal repairs and decoration that are required. It might also be time to get that carpet fitted as there should be no more dust and wood chippings to contend with. And what about the garden? Basic landscaping, turf, paving and seeding of lawn areas can be done now. It’s a good idea to have architect or engineer inspect all items. To finish things off, make that all important snag list to tick everything off.
