Kristian proud to read the Proclamation in Polish

His friends back home in Poland know little of the 1916 Rising or its significance in Irish history but they do know that seventeen years old Kristian Czernyhowski did something very important last Friday. Kristian, a student at Gorey’s

Creagh College was one of three students selected to read the Proclamation as part of the Flag Raising ceremony to mark the end of the centenary celebrations in Gorey. He was joined by school colleagues Ben Dowie, who read the first part

Irish and particularly the community in Gorey are very welcoming of people who move here from other countries. ‘Irish people are very friendly, I think they are more friendly than Polish people and I really like living in Ireland’, he said after performing his rather historic duty on Friday. And how did he feel to be making a little bit of history on the day ‘Happy’ he declared Kristian and his family live in Clonattan village in Gorey itself having previously lived for a time in Camolin when he moved here five years ago.

of the 1916 document in English and Cailin Fitzpatrick who read the final section in Irish. But it was Kristian’s contribution which was unique as he read the middle section of the Proclamation in Polish. He was delighted to be part of such an historic occasion. There is a strong Polish community in the North Wexford town and they plan to hold a Polish festival later this month. Kristian, who is interested in studying graphic design when he completes his studies at Creagh, is very happy in his adopted country. He says the

The weather may not be very summerlike but the strawberry season is upon us and the delicious berries will be appearing on roadsides all over the country over the next few days. The strawberry crop is of vital importance to the Wexford economy and the Wexford strawberry is known throughout the country. The industry provides huge seasonal employment right across the county. No markers for junction as road runs through Enniscorthy

Now you see them, now you don’t. That is the story with the green and white roadside markers which alert drivers to junctions along a main route because on the road from Wexford town to Gorey, via Ballycanew, not all the junctions have the markings. Blackwater based councillor Oliver Walsh noticed that several junctions on that road had no markings at all. On further examination he discovered that on the part of the road that runs through the Gorey Municipal District all the junctions had the green and white markers and further south when the road enters the Wexford Municipal District the markers are also in place. However, where the junctions are located on the part of the road which runs through the Enniscorthy Municipal District there are no markers.

Not surprisingly this set councillor Walsh thinking. ‘Why is it that there are no markers in Enniscorthy? Surely there should be similar standards for all the Council districts’; he told a meeting of the local District Council. Now an examination is to be carried out with a view to having the problem rectified. In the meantime motorists should not depend on the presence of green and white markers to identify a junction when travelling through parts of the Enniscorthy Municipal District.

Junction markers in place at Wells and Corriganeagh but when the road enters the Enniscorthy District the markers disappear.

Funding boost for nine schools

Fine Gael TD, Paul Kehoe said that nine schools in County Wexford are to benefit from funding to improve and upgrade school buildings for students and teachers. “It’s very welcome news that schools such as Oylegate National School and eight others are to get funding to carry out vital electrical works. “Funding of €30 million will see major improvements in 197 primary and post primary schools around the country under the Summer Works Scheme for 2016 and 2017. “The majority of works in schools in County Wexford

will be carried out in schools over the summer months, to minimise disruption to students, teachers and other school staff. “I’m very aware of the great work being done in schools across County Wexford and this funding will help Boards of Management and school principals in County Wexford to carry out priority gas and electrical projects, which are necessary to improve and upgrade school buildings for both pupils and teachers. “In my view it is vital that students and teachers in schools across County Wex-

ford spend their days in an environment that is comfortable and conducive to study. This Government is committed to funding improvement and upgrading works in schools across County Wexford to help improve the learning environment for students. “This Summer Works Scheme is also welcome news for the local economy in County Wexford as it will support jobs in the construction sector and stimulate economic activity.” List of Schools to Receive Electrical Upgrades

Mythen slams cut to Mental Health cash "The recent disturbing CSO figures confirmed everyone's worst fears about the frighteningly high suicide rate in Wexford, and is also the highest per capita in the state. It is disgusting and simply wrong to see over one third of the mental health budget re-allocated to other areas, because of the Health Minister, Leo Varadkar's, inability and shape shifting approach to public health, Sinn Fein councillor, Johnny Mythen has claimed ' These cuts are causing severe long term damage and hardship on families whom have loved ones suffering from mental health issues especially within the young and the

LGBT community. Many of them are cynical about politics and judging from the actions of Leo Varadkar, it's not hard to see why. There is an urgent need for all of us to recognise that mental health is a growing and serious problem in our society. Given the significant under-funding of mental health before these cuts and now we have to subtract a further €12m. This will, in harsh terms, result in more suicides, and, will significantly diminish any meaningful provision of essential services to the most vulnerable members of our families, neighbours and friends."., said Cllr. Mythen

Wexford Fes!val to be extended in 2017 With unprecedented demand for tickets for this year’s Wexford Festival Opera, the board of Wexford Festival Trust have announced that they will expand the 2017 Festival from 12 to 18 days, running across three weekends, for the first time since 2008, with next year’s 66th Festival opening on Thursday 19 October and closing on Sunday 5 November. Full details of the daytime and evening performance schedule for the 2017 Festival will be announced later this year.

Bottle Bank disgrace This was the scene at a Bottle Bank in Wexford town on Bank Holiday Monday. The Bottle Bank concerned is located at Belvedere Road on the green just behind where the new courthouse is being constructed. As part of that construction it was moved onto the green near the Brendan Corish roundabout with flowers and shrubs planted around it to enhance its appearance. But some people have demonstrated once again that they have a complete disregard for the environment, dumping their household waste alongside the Bottle Bank. The refuse sacks which had been dumped were obviously torn apart by dogs and this is the sorry mess that greeted visitors to the Bottle Bank on Monday. Several Bottle Banks in the

county now have security cameras and this incident clearly demonstrates the need for such cameras. In several locations residents have resisted Bottle Banks being placed in their areas because of fears that they would attract illegal dumpers.

Members of Connolly family attend Wexford Lock-Out ceremony

May Day is an important date for trade unionists in Wexford and in recent years the monument marking the 1911 Wexford Lock-out in The Faythe has provided a focal point for people to remember that major event in the town's history. This year the May Day Ceremony had added significence because it also marked the centenary of the death of James Connolly, Irish patriot, trade union activist and inspired leader of the1916 Easter Rising, and a man who played a key role in that workers' dispute more than one hundred years ago. The importance of the ceremony was reflected in the attendance which included a grandson, John, and a grandaughter, Maggi, of James Connolly, as well as John Connolly a great grandson of James Connolly and Roisin Flood a great-grand daughter. In attendance too were the Mayor of Wexford, Cllr Ger Carthy, Minister for Public Expenditure, Brendan Howlin, Government Chief Whip, Paul Kehoe and the Bishop of Ferns, Denis Brennan. Trade Union leaders including Patricia King, General Secretary of of the ICTU and Joe O' Flynn General Secretary of SIPTU were also present. Wreaths were placed at the Lock-Out Gate by the Mayor, Ger Cartgy on behalf of the people of Wexford, Minister Howlin on behalf of the government, by John Connolly on behalf of the Connolly family

and by Ted Howlin on behalf of the Labour Party. Helen Corish Wylde presented a history of the Wexford Lock-Out to the attendance with particular emphasis on the important role played by James Connolly. There were excerpts too from speeches given by Connolly, including his 1912 victory speech delivered in The Faythe after the strike. There was a real sense of going back in time and honouring those who led the locked out workers in the town more than a hundred years ago when the song 'Freedom Pioneers' which was written by Connolly, was sung to the air of 'The Boys of Wexford' Ger Lawlor and his singers lead the performance but the entire atMayor Ger Carthy Ministers Brendan Howlin and Paul Kehoe, Bishop Denis Brennan members of Borough tendance joined in on a mornCouncil , Trade Union leaders, and ceremony organisers pictured with members of the Connolly family a the ing when the weather did its Lock-Out gate.. best to spoil the occasion. The St. Patrick's Fife and Drum Band provided the musical accompaniment. The key note speech was delivered by Minister Brendan Howlin, who was performing his last official duty in Wexford before the expected change of government this week. Earlier, in his speech, the Mayor had praised Mr Howlin for his contribution to Wexford over his last five years in Office. The 1916 Irish Proclamation was read by sixteen years old Cathal O'Gara,. 'Evita' a big success for WLOS

It was another spectacularly successful week for the Wexford Light Opera when they staged 'Evita' at the National Opera House. As usual they played to packed houses throughout the run and

audiences were wildly enthusiastic about the show. WLOS has long had a reputation for top class productions and this year was no exception with a very high standard of performance again on display at the

Opera House. There were several powerful individual performances but this show was not about individuals it was a full group success story.

Gorey Night Run raised €9,500 for Hospice The organisers of the hugely successful Gorey Night Run handed over a cheque for €9,500 to North Wexford Hospice recently. Speaking at the occasion on behalf of the Hospice committee, Cecily Jones said that the committee were delighted with both the success of the event and the amount of money raised. She sincerely thanked the organising committee and said that the money would be used to help fund the 7 nurses that are currently part of the hospice service. She

also noted that the feedback from the night was hugely positive and there was widespread feeling that the event should become an annual event in the town. In reply John Hegarty said on behalf of the committee, they were delighted to be associated with such a deserving cause as Hospice and to support all the good work that they do in such difficult circumstances across North Wexford. Unfortunately a few members of the committee have had family members who

required the Hospice nurses and they really couldn't speak highly enough of the work they do. He again thanked all their sponsors, especially Gorey Credit Union for their generosity, which meant that every penny of every runner’s fee could go straight to the Hospice and also to the hundreds of people who turned up on the night to make it such a memorable night. He hoped even though it was a long way off, that they would be in a position to run it again in 2017.

Young people play central role in Gorey ceremony

While the headline events to commemorate the Rising have all taken place in Enniscorthy there has been a host of smaller events across the county. North Wexford has seen a busy programme of events and last Friday the commemorations were brought to a close with the final scheduled ceremony-----a flag raising ceremony in the Civic Square. It was a low key affair but it

stood out from other commemorations and celebrations for the level of participation by young people. Young people played a central role in event from the singing of the national anthem to the reading of the Proclamation and the raising of the flag itself. Indeed the young people of North Wexford had starring roles in every aspect of the ceremony with students from

Students from Clologue National School provided the music which included a rousing rendition of The Foggy Dew. The Municipal District Coun-

cil Chairman, Malcolm Byrne, who presided, noted that the ceremony put young people centre stage. It was also inclusive and representative of the new Gorey with the Proclamation being read in English, Irish and Polish. Among those attending were government Chief Whip, Paul Kehoe and Fianna Fail TD, James Browne.

Vintage Run is a huge success

Casual holiday weekend visitors to Wexford must have thought that they had stepped into the past or into the middle of a giant farmers protest when hundreds of tractors began to arrive on Wexford quays on Bank Holiday Sun-

day. These were tractors not just from Wexford but from many parts of Ireland and from Wales. It was all part of the Bargy Vintage Club’s Irish and Welsh Road Run which started on Sunday morning

and made its way along South Wexford before finally landing on Wexford quays. Tractors of all shapes, makes ,sizes and ages made their way onto the quayfront where they made for an impressive sight which was enjoyed by a huge number of spectators. The vintage tractors were sharing the space with the Fun Fair which was part of the Jestfest festival. The Mayor of Wexford Cllr Ger Carthy was on hand to officially welcome the huge contingent. There was a huge interest in the vehicles with young and old carefully examining machines which a generation ago played a vital role on the farm lands of Wales and Ireland. They were not as sophisticated as the tractors which populate Irish farms today but in their day they were top of the range. The tractor run provided the county with a huge Bank holiday weekend boost and there was another positive from the event as well with the entire effort taking place to raise funds for an MRI Scanner at Wexford General Hospital.

Patriot’s Flag is raised proudly over Enniscorthy

It was nothing like the spectacular throng which filled Abbey Square and Castle Hill on Easter Monday but it was still a very special occasion when they gathered in various uniforms and wearing an assortment of Chains of Office last Wednesday to mark the official unveiling of the Patriot’s Flag. This is the permanent memorial to 1916 in Enniscorthy to mark the centenary celebrations. It has a prominent place in a very prominent part of the town and will remain as a symbol of a great month of

commemoration and celebration in the heart of Wexford. Last Wednesday was chosen for the ceremony because it marked to the exact date one hundred years since the Rising started in the town. The event was colourful with participation once again from the army and, of course the reenactors were on hand again to add an historical touch to the proceedings. County Chairman Tony Dempsey and local Chairman Paddy Kavanagh, jointly unveiled the plaque which ex-

plains the significance of the flagpole. There was another reading of the Proclamation, the Last Post was sounded again and the relatively short ceremony ended with the national anthem. Government formation talks meant that expected high profile national figures were absent and even the local TDs, with the exception of James Brown e, had more important matters to attend to in Dublin. The various ceremonies in the town this year have all gone very smoothly, that is except

for the Patriot’s Flag itself. The original tricolour, the one raised on Easter Monday, proved to be too heavy and simply dropped down the flagpole. Eventually it had to be replaced and the tricolour now flies proudly to honour the patriots of one hundred years ago. A new home is expected to be found for the original flag at Co. Council headquarters in Wexford.

County Council Chairman Tony Dempsey and Enniscorthy District Chairman Paddy Kavanagh unveil the plaque at the Patriot’s Flag watched by Councillor Joe Sullivan, Sean Doyle President 1916 Centenary Committee, Deputy James Browne, Councillor Johnny Mythen, Councillor Willie Kavanagh, Councillor Keith Doyle, Councillor Kathleen Codd Nolan, Tom Enright Chief Executive County Council, Padraig O’Gorman Enniscorthy District Manager and John Carley Director of Services Wexford County Council

GER WALSH Glass is more than half full in Enniscorthy

The Rising celebrations have really given Enniscorthy and its people a great lift. It has been no secret that the Cathedral town as it’s called has sort of been in the doldrums for some time with a lack of jobs and investment taking its toll. It has fallen from once being second only in terms of importance in the county to Wexford town to a position which is some distance behind Gorey and like many other towns of its size throughout the country

it has seen its centre ripped apart by the recession. But a lot of things are happening right now on the banks of the Slaney with the by-pass already underway, the planning for the new second bridge and flood defences reaching a conclusion and the spin off from the success of Brooklyn and the centenary celebrations expected to make the town a much more attractive location for tourists. Permanent exhibitions for both of the latter will be a fea-

Text alert success or failure? Sometimes it can be hard to judge whether an initiative has been a success or not. Take the new Pilot Text Alert Initiative in Gorey. It is aimed at assisting the enforcement and act as a deterrent for the misuse of the disabled parking spaces in the town. To date it seems the

scheme has been used very little. Does this mean that the scheme has not been a success? Well maybe not. It could also mean that its introduction has had the desired effect of deterring people from mis-using the designated spaces. Local officials are now trying to figure out which is the case.

ture of Enniscorthy in the years ahead and then there is the Sports Hub which will host its first Leinster Outdoor Championship later this month, a vehicle to provide the local economy with another shot in the arm. The local Council Chairman Paddy Kavanagh has been keen to highlight the many success stories which are unfolding in the town at the moment. A lot of people are very negative about the town suggesting

While the dust has well and truly settled on the general election, despite the delay in forming a government, thoughts in some places are already turning to the next contest. There is a growing feeling that whatever happens over the next few days the next

nothing. I know I can hear a lot of people saying how absurd that suggestion is. However, many of the things which are absolutely essential for daily living are dependent on electricity so why shouldn’t it be free. That is, after all, the type of logic which is being applied by a majority of politicians to the question of water charges.

election will be sooner rather than later. The fact that the final seat in this constitue4ncy was decided by such a small margin will mean that a lot of attention will be focused on Wexford as a place where the outcome could change. In that context it’s a bit surprising that Sinn Fein did not put Johnny Mythen on

their Seanad ticket given how close he came to unseating Paul Kehoe. A national platform would have put him in a very strong position to go one better next time around. Last week Malcolm Byrne failed in his efforts to win a seat in the Upper House, the second setback to his political career in as many months. Malcolm it seems did not

have the enthusiastic support of some of his colleagues in Wexford and that was enough to scupper his chances. Whether he will maintain an interest in battling to make a political breakthrough at national level following these two disappointments remains to be seen. However, there are those who suggest he may not.

They are ‘stoned out’ in Gorey

&ROiLVWH 6KHLOVFLUH

With all the talk about a majority of TDs in the Dail now against water charges as a result of the outcome of the general election and the often voiced view that this means that charges have to go, I was just wondering if some parties and candidates in the next election might stand on a ‘free’ electricity platform and then if we elected enough of them we could all get our electricity for

that nothing is happening, but there are many positives according to Paddy and he has plenty of evidence to support his view. The Co. Council has ambitious plans to completely overhaul the town centre, but that work will be dependent on government funding. However, regardless of when that k gets underway I think it is fair to say that Enniscorthy’s future is looking a little brighter than it has been for many years.

Could we now suspend electricity charges?

The centenary of the 1916 Rising has seen a lot of different commemorations around the county. The big events of course had a very high profile but quietly in all corners of the county there have been celebrations to mark events particular to different localities. These events have often in-

volved historical talks but almost always have seen some type of plaque or stone unveiled to mark a particular battle or the involvement of a particular person from the locality. Many of these unveiling have taken place in North Wexford with local councillors dutifully turning up at crossroads,

at the sides of ditches and in all sorts of places for such events. But they are getting a bit tired of it all at this stage with the local Council Chairman Malcolm Byrne telling a recent meeting of the Municipal District Council that they were ‘stoned out’ at this stage. No one disagreed.

Paul and Michael not letting grass grow under their feet Usually after a general election politicians take a bit of a pause to catch their breaths and settle into the new Dail. Things are very different this time around. of course, with no one quite settled into the Dail as yet. But one man who really has not been letting the grass grow under his feet is Paul Kehoe. Maybe it’s understandable given that he got home by just fifty votes in February so any new contest would pose really challenges for him. Last week he was out warning people about the delays in the passport office and urging anyone who had holidays planned to renew their passports early to avoid disappointment.

This week he was announcing money for flood relief works in South Wexford. It looks as if the outgoing Chief Whip is having a sort of an each way bet on whether or not a government will be formed. If the minority government takes Office and he remains in his job he will certainly have his work cut out trying to steer the administration successfully through Dail votes. Meanwhile, his colleague Michael D’Arcy has managed a bit of profile for himself in these early stages of the new Dail. He was out very quickly on the water charges issue when he was prominent on national radio raising a lot of

questions about the decision to effectively scrap the charges. He will have been giving voice to a lot of voters when he questioned the wisdom of what was being proposed, particularly when he raised concerns about the position of those who paid the charges. On both Morning Ireland and the Sean O’Rourke Show he was measured but forceful delivering a message which will resonate with a lot of people. Michael is obviously determined to make his mark in the Dail and few will disagreed with his view that there are many more pressing issues facing the country than the ending of water charges

Commemorating and Celebrating in Enniscorthy

Relatives Night brings centenary events to a close

And finally as darkness fell over the town of Enniscorthy on April 27th 2016, exactly one hundred years to the date that the rebels took control of the town as part of the Rising the wonderfully successful events which had been staged to commemorate those remarkable days in our history came to a close. And it was fitting that the final event in a very busy programme should centre on the relatives those who took part in the actual Rising, Relatives had been asked to register with the local Council some months ago and there was a very big take up on the offer with more than one thousand people turning up in the Riverside Park Hotel for the special event. There was a tremendous atmosphere in the function room as people from all over the

county greeted long lost friends and chatted about their forefathers. The commemorative events of the Spring of 2016 really captured the public imagination and many suggest that this was due to the inclusiveness of the programme, particularly the involvement of the schools. That broad level of public interest in the events and the history of 1916 was reflected not just in the numbers who turned up for the Relatives Night but also in the cross section of age groups who mingled in the function room. There were the men in their Sunday best, dressed as so many men did in the 1960s, and they rubbed shoulder with young guys in hoodies, and you had all other age groups in between. The families queued up to receive their special certificates

and to be greeted by members of the Co. Council. Many were very anxious to tell the stories of their relatives’ involvement in the Rising-----and that involvement also covered a wide range of activities. Then proudly clutching their presentations they left the hotel to make their way home. When quietness eventually descended the organisers could reflect on a job well done and a commemoration that will long live in the public mind Joseph and John Doyle,Enniscorthy with Clr.Keith Doyle
