Martin bids to bring Carthy into F.F. Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin has had discussions with Wexford Independent councillor Ger Carthy in an effort to persuade the South Wexford Independent councillor to join the main opposition party. Mr. Martin is understood to be anxious to strengthen the Fianna Fail representation in Wexford well in advance of the next general election in an effort to secure a second seat for the party. Wexford is one of only seven constituencies in the country outside Dublin where Fianna Fail finished up with fewer seats than Fine Gael at the last

general election and it’s a position which has to be reversed if Martin is to lead the largest political party into the next Dail. Fianna Fail’s weakness in South Wexford is seen as a big problem for the party and poses a major challenge in terms of winning a second seat given that it is the largest electoral district in the county. Carthy headed the poll in the 2014 local election and despite being out of the running for a seat in the general election, he still matched the voting strength of the Fianna Fail Wexford District standardbearer Aoife Byrne, and was

well ahead of Fine Gael’s Julie Hogan. Much of the independent councillor’s organisation comes from a Fianna Fail background and it is not thought likely they would have a major problem if he joined the Fianna Fail ranks. Fianna Fail sources have confirmed that there have been ‘contacts’ between the party and Cllr. Carthy with several sources suggesting that Mr. Martin is ‘quite anxious’ to see the Our lady’s Island man in Fianna Fail. Cllr. Carthy said he did not wish to comment on gossip and refused to confirm or deny that

discussions had taken place between him and Fianna Fail. However, it is understood that face to face discussions between Cllr Carthy and Deputy Martin have taken place. It is unlikely that Carthy would take any decision without first consulting his support team. If he teams up with Fianna Fail it will be with a view to being a party candidate at the next general election. His route to the ticket would either be through a party selection convention or by way of being added by party headquarters, a route now favored by the party for the selection of many of its candidates.

Place Awards in association with Co-operation Ireland were attended by voluntary groups and organisations from across the island who were honoured at the special gala event in front of an audience of 1000 guests and VIPs with many more people tuning in to watch the live stream on-line. Chairman of Wexford County Council Cllr. Paddy Kavanagh was joined on the evening by fellow councillor George Lawlor and staff of Wexford County Council together with representatives of Wexford MarineWatch and the Hope Centre Enniscorthy in accepting the coveted awards. Speaking at the awards, Councillor Lawlor described the immense work done by Wexford MaineWatch since its inception in December 2012. “Wexford Marinewatch is a community based voluntary organisation whose volunteers provide suicide prevention patrols in the area of Wexford Bridge, Quays and Harbour� said Councillor Lawlor. “The primary objective of the organisation is to eliminate suicide and attempted

suicide in this area of Wexford which had sadly become a place where many people had lost their lives. He added “Since its inception Wexford Marinewatch has ensured that no person has lost their life in Wexford Harbour and has intercepted almost 90 individuals who were intent on self harm.� This project really impressed the judges who said in their citation: “In just 4 years, this unique, totally volunteer-driven, model has

had a huge impact on the lives of its impact group resulting in suicide prevention in an area which previously had a very difficult problem. Significantly, since the establishment of this group there were no suicides in the area. This is a unique collaboration project and has huge potential to be rolled out as a model to other communities� Councillor Kavanagh also praised the work of the many community groups throughout County Wexford and highlighted

the Hope Cancer Support Centre as a prime example of the local community uniting in response to a specific need. “The Hope Cancer Support Centre in Enniscorthy was founded in 1999 by a group of people who recognized the need for a service to give emotional support to people whose lives are changed by a cancer diagnosis� said the Cathaoirleach. *Pictured at the ceremony were Cllr. Rosslare Europort drops charges in bid to lure cruise ships Irish Rail, the operators of Rosslare Europort has notified shipping lines that it is to waive charges for cruise ships for 2017, 2018 and 2019 to establish the South-East as a destination for what is Europe’s fastest growing tourism sector. News Angry North Wexford Councillors demand ‘fair deal’ from council

Gorey pays highest rates, but gets least in return Gorey’s battle for a fair deal from Wexford Co. Council continued to be fought when the authority met for its annual budget meeting. There has been increasing anger in North Wexford over what is perceived to be second class treatment of the area by the Council with spending in several sectors lower in the District than in other parts of the county. Part of the problem is historical because Gorey has fewer social houses but local councillors argue that there is not sufficient evidence to suggest that these historical issues are being tackled. Gorey’s public representatives are incensed on two levels. In the first instance businesses in Gorey town pay the highest level of rates in the county, although an equalisation process to bring rates throughout the county to a single level is underway and secondly it is a young fast developing town with greater needs than Enniscorthy or New Ross, they argue. New Ross has the lowest level of commercial rate payments in the county.

Members of the Gorey Municipal District Council recently rejected the Council’ general allocation to the district in an effort to highlight their annoyance. At the budget meeting questions were raised about the level of spending by the Council on festivals in Wexford town. The vast bulk of spending in this category goes to the county town. Cllr. Anthony Donohoe in particular has been questioning this spend in recent months and has questioned why the Spiegetent, a commercial venture received substantial support from the local authority. He raised the matter again at the Budget meeting asking for a breakdown of where the overall money was spent. He didn’t get a figure but Director of Services Tony Larkin revealed that most of the money went to what he described as major festivals with the capacity to bring bed nights to the area. Apart from the Spiegeltent, the Comedy Festival in May and the Winterfest at Christmas are also being supported in addition to a long standing

arrangement with the Opera Festival. Cllr. Malcolm Byrne again highlighted the lack of arts spending in Gorey and disputed claims that some of the groups and organisations in Wexford town had a countywide focus. He also questioned the spend on housing pointing out that the need for social housing was greatest in North Wexford. And Fionntain O’Suilleabhan said he would like to have seen more specific commitments for North Wexford contained in the budget document. But CEO Tom Enright defended the Council’s position and insisted that all areas of the county were being treated fairly. He said the meeting was to pass a countywide budget and not to deal with issues for particular districts. Mr Enright pointed out that he had recently met all the Gorey councillors to discuss various issues and would hold more meetings with them in 2017. He said there were different issues in each of the districts and pointed to the fact that historically Gorey had fewer social houses and as a result the

Council’s spending on housing maintenance was lower in the area. Insisting that no one was trying to provide less for any par-

ticular area he stressed that several significant infrastructural projects in Gorey were a key part of the Council strategy going forward.

The Market House development is currently a top priority and will be advertised for tender immediately after Christmas, the meeting was told.

Wexford’s Best Young Entrepreneurs announced ₏45,000 fund presented by Local Enterprise Office Wexford’s best young entrepreneurs have been announced at the County Final of Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur (IBYE) competition, which took place in Wexford County Council Offices on Tuesday night 29th November. The IBYE competition, now in its third year, has a ₏2 million investment fund and is run in each of 31 Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs). It is supported by

the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation and Enterprise Ireland. Wexford’s “Best Young Entrepreneurâ€? was named as Jack Harte, age 28, from Harte Outdoor Lighting New Ross. The young entrepreneur also won the category for Best Established Business and an investment fund from LEO Wexford worth â‚Ź15,000 The other main category win-

ners on the day were Mark Rowe, aged 32, of Dyno Med from Kilmore in the Best Business Idea category who was awarded a prize of â‚Ź7000, and Ronan McGrath, aged 34, Elevation Construction Network from Enniscorthy, who won the Best Startup category and a prize of â‚Ź15,000. The county winners will now proceed to eight regional finals in January and February 2017

In addition, there is an ongoing problem with staffing in the mental health sector, in terms of filling advertised posts and replacing individuals on leave and I know that this is a priority for Minister McEntee who is working closely with Minister Paschal Donohoe to rectify. “While identifying the needs of the service, it is important to state that since the introduction of Vision for Change, there have been a lot of positive developments in the way mental health services are delivered, in particular with large focus placed on delivering care in the community. Council may act on cut price graves in Wexford and New Ross The cost of burials in some Co. Council cemeteries is expected to increase next year when officials bring forward a new policy on the running of burial grounds. There has been concern for some time that the cost of purchasing a plot in Bunclody is more than double the cost of securing a final resting place in either Crosstown in Wexford town or St Stephens Cemetery in New Ross. The problem of Bunclody

was raised a year ago by local councillor Barbara Anne Murphy and at this year’s budget meeting she pointed out that no action had been taken on the matter over the past twelve months. A grave space at Crosstown Cemetery costs just €400 and in New Ross a single space costs €500, but in all other Co. Council cemeteries it costs €1,000 to purchase a single grave space.

Cllr. Murphy asked when the problem was going to be tackled and Director of Services John Carley explained that it was an anomaly and legacy issue passed on from the old Urban Councils. He agreed it needed to be dealt with a promise that a new policy covering all burial grounds under the control of the Council would be brought before councillors in the New Year.

Reductions in costs generated by the upgrading of street lighting in the county are helping to pay for the upkeep of additional lights managed by the Co. Council in estates which are taken in charge. Finance Officer Annette O’Neill told Councillors at

the annual budget meeting that the authority had secured some savings in contracts while the introduction of LED lights had also generated savings and this was helping to cover the cost of additional lights. Ms O’Neill was responding to concerns raised by Cllr.

Malcolm Byrne that there was not sufficient money in the budget to cover the cost of maintaining lights in estates taken over by the Council. A major review of all public lighting in the county is to be presented to councillors in 2017.

Rural roads set to get worse and worse and worse Wexford’s rural roads are set to continue to deteriorate with little sign of any major increase in funds to carry out what are becoming essential repair and upgrade works in many areas. Eamonn Hore the Director of Services for roads told the Council’s Budget Meeting that even if additional funding was provided from next year it would take up to twenty years to bring all the rural roads back up to a good standard. And with little likelihood of any immediate or short term funding boost the situation is set to steadily deteriorate over the coming

years. The scale of the problem is illustrated by the fact that there has been a gap of €40m in the amount provided by central government for the repair and maintenance of rural roads since 2008. Mr Hore told councillors that with the limited resources they had the outdoor staff were doing a wonderful job. Concerns over the state of the roads were raised by a number of councillors including Kathleen Codd Nolan and Willie Fitzharris. Cllr. Fitzharris said that in some cases the resurfacing cycle was now forty years

whereas it should be ten years. Cllr. Codd Nolan said they would have to make increased representations to get more funds for the roads which she described as the number one issue for people in many parts of the county, New Ross District councillor John Fleming complained that as New Ross had more kms of roads it should get more funding under the roads plan. But Mr Hore said the allocations were determined by several factors including road usage and were not made purely on the kms of roads in any district

Helping locals and visitors to ‘spend a penny’ in Co. Wexford is proving a financially painful experience for the Co. Council. With usage of Automatic Public Conveniences falling as the public falls out of love with the once much sought after facilities the Council would like to scrap several of the APCs which they have in various parts of the county.

They are costly to maintain, generate little revenue and also carry expensive service contracts. But getting rid of the automatic toilets is not as simple as it seems. The Council is locked into service contracts and some of them have several years to run. This means that in some cases the toilets are being maintained even though few

people are using them. Cllr. John Hegarty said the number of APCs should be reduced as quickly as possible. Chief Executive Tom Enright agreed that the number should be reduced and revealed that was the Council’s intention, but progress will be dictated by the terms of the contracts.

News Council would ‘consider’ more funding for Waterford Airport A €30,000 grant from Wexford Co. Council earmarked for Waterford Airport which caused controversy when it was included in the budget for 2016 was never paid because the proposed development work at the airport did not go ahead. Cllr. Malcolm Byrne who had objected to the money for the airport a

year ago questioned whether or not it was intended to provide more money in 2017, especially as there were now no services from the airport. Director of Services, Tony Larkin, pointed out that the money had not been paid last year because the development had not gone ahead, but if future development was

proposed it would be considered. Chief Executive, Tom Enright, said the problem at Waterford was that Jets could not land there due to the short runway. An extension of the runway was required to open the airport up to the larger companies but the finance required for the work had not been found.

Fire Brigade charges to be reviewed There is a possibility that call out charges for the fire service could be abolished next year as part of a major review of the service which is currently underway. The charges are very difficult to collect and contribute only a tiny fraction of the cost of running the service and a view gaining currently in some quarters is

that they are more trouble than they are worth. However, no decision on any changes to the charges will be taken until the review has been completed. At the Council’s budget meeting, Cllr. John Hegarty had suggested that the possibility of reducing the charges might be considered as a way of encouraging more

people to pay. Chief Executive Tom Enright said the Council was currently reviewing the charges as part of an overall Fire Service review. The administration costs associated with collecting the charge were considerable, he confirmed adding that all aspects of the charges were being examined.

By George, Tony has Barntown covered When George Lawlor recently proposed a motion calling for the provision of a bus stop in Barntown there were raised eyebrows at a meeting of the Wexford Municipal Borough District council. Fianna Fail councillor Tony Dempsey is of course a Barntown resident and the local councillor. Was he asleep on the job?, his colleagues wondered as George spoke of the great value which a stop in Barntown would be for locals

and suggested that the local Church Car park could be used to facilitate parking etc. No one was against the move but Tony had quite a bit to say. He explained to George that the problem was finding a safe place for the Stop and to date that had presented the difficulty. And no the buses couldn’t use the Church car park because they wouldn’t fit through the entrance. He went on to detail a series of meetings which had been held and the various

proposals which had been examined and his killer blow was to say that the Bus Stop was virtually sorted and would soon be a reality. ‘Withdraw your motion George, Tony has it sorted’, said Ger Carthy, who couldn’t contain his glee at the turn of events. Councillors are very protective of their own local patches and Tony was obviously determined to demonstrate that he would not be taking any invasion of Barntown lying down.

Davy fails to deliver for his wife, but can he look after the neighbours? Wexford councillor Davy Hynes is a firm believer in all politics being local, even if the local problems can sometimes be the most difficult to resolve. There is a round-about at the end of Summerhill, just yards from where the independent councillor lives and it has no pedestrian crossing attached to it, which makes it difficult and some would say dangerous for pedestrians. Davy’s wife is one of those who takes this view and has

been trying to get her councillor husband to get something done about it for ages. But so far she has met with no success. Davy related the tale at a recent meeting of the Wexford Municipal District Council, probably in the hope that the engineers might take pity on him as the festive season approaches. But if he cannot deliver for his lady wife, he is still trying to impress the neighbours. He has been campaigning to

have footpaths in Davitt Road and John’s Road repaired for months and he has now made on final plea that the work be undertaken before Christmas. A sort of Christmas box from Davy to his neighbours. However, there is still no guarantee that the paths will be delivered by Christmas Day. However, the good news is that even if they miss that deadline the work will be undertaken early in the New Year.

New trees a Christmas gift for Gorey It was a long time coming but Gorey's famous avenue is about to get its new trees in time for Christmas. There has been much comment in recent times about the type of trees which should be planted in Gorey and this is an image of what the new trees in The Avenue will look like when they are finally planted. Thirty five (15 feet tall) will be planted on The Avenue by local company Kinbark Nurseries before Christmas.They are very adaptable; have leaves just a few inches wide and have a beautiful change of colour from green right through to red. The will grow approx 18inches-2 feet per year (for 120 yrs estimated) so they should still be there for the bicentenary of the Easter Rising! Local councilor Fionntan O'Suilleabhain has been a long campaigner for this type of tree for The Avenue. He said

'This has been a long frustrating process but hopefully will be worth it if it helps restore Goreys Avenue to some semblance of its former grandeur. Thinking of a pet for Christmas? We are approaching that wonderful time of the year and it is easy to get caught up in the excitement of it all and think a pet would be lovely to have in the home on Christmas morning. Indeed it is great fun to have a new kitten or puppy join the family but there are a number of important things to consider before making this long commitment. A very important point and one which is often overlooked is that you need to have a suitably secured premises to keep your dog. If your pet dog is loose on the road, sooner or later they are going to get knocked down. Dogs loose on the road are a danger to themselves and to drivers trying to brake or swerve to avoid hitting the dog. Time and time again veterinary surgeons are presented with dogs which

have been badly injured as a result of being hit by a car. The question you have to ask yourself is “Could this happen to my dog and what can I

do about it?” There are many beautiful breeds of dogs but don’t make

a decision purely on looks. Make sure to do your research to ensure the breed is suitable for your family. Consider the adult size and temperament. Certain breeds of dogs have boundless energy and need lots of exercise depending on what purpose they were originally bred for. Other breeds will be very unhappy if left at home alone for long periods of the day. A new puppy needs to be vaccinated from six weeks of age and shouldn’t be out mixing with other dogs until after the primary course of vaccinations have been completed. It is very important that your puppy gets their first booster after a year and then an annual health check and booster vaccination. I have been presented with dogs infected with leptospirosis where the own-

ers had thought that dogs only needed to be vaccinated as puppies. Kittens should be vaccinated also and ask your vet about vaccinating for feline leukaemia virus as it may not be part of the core vaccinations. Feline leukaemia virus can be spread to other cats by close contact e.g. a shared feed bowl. if your cat will be going outside, it is safest to have them vaccinated against FeLV. Your new puppy or kitten should be wormed every two weeks for roundworms until 12 weeks of age and then monthly until 6 months old. As an adult they can be

wormed every 3 months. Worming every six weeks might be necessary in a hunting cat. Not all wormers treat or prevent lungworm. Lungworm is transmitted to dogs by ingesting slugs and snails in the garden. Make sure to wash your dog’s bowl every day and not leave food lying around the bowl. Do not use slug pellets as they are poisonous to your pet and to the birds which are the natural predators of slugs and snails. There is a monthly spot on treatment for your dog or cat which treats a lot of parasites including lungworm. Flea infestations are no longer a seasonal issue. They are now an all year round problem, because our pets spend much of their time in centrally heated houses. Therefore prevention is easier than treatment. As fleas are part of the lifecycle of the ca-

nine tapeworm, routine flea treatment is an important part of worm control. Many people do not realise that just 5% of the total flea population is on their pet, while 95% is on the carpet, curtains and sofas, so in addition to treating your pet, the house should also be treated. It is now a legal requirement to have your dog microchipped and registered. This is a rapid procedure which only needs to be done once but you need to update your own details on the owner database if you change address. It is important to remember to socialise and train your new pup. Start your pup on a good quality puppy food and factor this in as an ongoing cost. So there are a few points to think about before your new family addition can run away with the toilet paper on Christmas morning! Have lots of fun with your new pet.

Gorey hosts its greatest ever It’s official Gorey is the place where Christmas starts and ends in Co. Wexford. Last year there were unbelievable scenes when 8,000 people turned out for the switch on of the town’s new Christmas lights. The organisers had not expected so many and the scenes were a little chaotic at times. This year planning started way back in the Summer and a hard working committee was charged with the task of coming up with something which would cater for the crowds and make it a night to remember. Their efforts were an unquali-

fied success with the Main Street of Gorey transformed into one giant party venue for the evening. Up to 10,000 people were on the streets singing and dancing their way through more than two hours of entertainment which preceded the arrival of Santa. This was the official start of Christmas, but that didn’t mean the entertainment was confined to Christmas songs and music. There was a touch of Elvis, Niall Diamond, Irish Music, the full spectrum. It was a programme which held the interest of the very

young but also had the Mums and Dads and Grandmas and Grandads dancing in the street. Indeed, the stage show captivated the audience to such an extent that when Santa’s arrival was delayed, mainly as a result of the massive crowd he had to get through, there was no sense of anxiousness. Eventually when the blue flashing light of a Garda patrol car emerged and the big redsuited man came into sight all heads turned away from the stage from where some Christmas favourites being performed by a traditional Irish Band were helping build a

truly remarkable atmosphere. The stage was a great success with whole families able to make a full evening of the event and with the weather kind for the time of year people really got an opportunity to enjoy the full show. Eventually Santa diverted way from the Main Street and his tractor pulled sleigh eventually made it to the stage, away from the crowds. The countdown itself was a deafening affair as the thousands in the crowds joined those on stage in the traditional signal for the switch to be pulled, flicked or whatever it is

The entertainment went on but the efforts of the previous two hours plus had taken their toll, particularly on many of the younger folks in attendance. It was time to go home to bed, after all wasn’t that what Santa had just told them. It was a great night for the

town. It was fun, entertaining, had great atmosphere and there was also a sense of community pride and celebration. The event has now firmly established as the place to be for the start of Christmas and no doubt the organisers are already looking at ways of making further improvements for next year. Gorey take a bow.

Frank and Madeleine are Wexford’s warm-up duo Being the warm up act for Santa is never a comfortable space to occupy but that’s exactly where Mayor Frank Staples and the First lady of Wexford Chamber of Commerce Madeleine Quirke found themselves in when they took to the stage in Wexford prior to the arrival of Santa to switch on the Christmas lights in the town for 2016. With hordes of kids just waiting

in wonder for the white bearded one to emerge on stage it was always going to be difficult to sell a message about the importance of shopping locally this festive season. But Frank and Madeleine did their best with the latter even managing a bit of a Panto type performance about exactly who should switch on the lights. The quays provide the space for

large numbers to gather for an event such as this but a tighter space would certainly have added to the atmosphere. There was, for example, an electric atmosphere in the Bullring earlier when the parade inched its way along the Main Street. With people standing several deep and both sides there was barely room for the Santa Train

and the various floats to make their way along the route which ended on the quays. This year the local Panto group with some of the characters from their forthcoming performance added to the colour of the parade which has become a feature of switch-on night in recent years. The choir from the same group joined Alan Corcoran on the

quayside stage to help entertain the crowds before the arrival of the parade. Corcoran is an accomplished stage hand and he threw himself into a routine aimed at getting the crowd going. Would it be Jack Frost or Santa to switch on the lights? he asked. There was always going to be only one answer to that. And so just over an hour after

he set off as part of the parade from Selskar Avenue Santa eventually arrived on the quays and with just a few words for the children, like keep your bedroom tidy and go to bed early he flicked a switch and there was light. Christmas had officially begun and there is a host of things happening right up to Christmas Eve.
