News New Ross set for €50,000 boost from sell out Kennedy Summer School The fifth annual Kennedy Summer School, which is set to take place in early September is now a sell out success.. Fans of Irish, U.S. and international politics are bound for the ancestral hometown of President John F. Kennedy, New Ross in county Wexford this September 7th to 9th as the Kennedy Summer School offers a unique programme of Irish and international political commentators, strategists, politicians, journalists and authors who will offer their perspectives on the ongoing changes to the East and West of Ireland. The Summer School which is deliberately held outside the peak tourist season brings significant economic benefit to the town and surrounding area Visitors from the US, the UK, France, Germany and all across Ireland, have snapped up an average of 300 tickets per day for the three-day summer school up. Some 6% of attendees hail from the international visitor market and 58% from all across Ireland with 36% of attendees from Wexford and the immediate vicinity, figures which will see New Ross boosted by an economic impact of €50,000. In addition to the direct economic benefit to the town and the national and international publicity the Kennedy Summer School has reinforced the towns association with the Kennedy name and the relationship with key players

nationally and in Irish America who have participated in the event. Strategic relationships have also been built with several third level institutions on both sides of the Atlantic including the Edward M Kennedy institute in Maynooth, the Waterford Institute of Technology, Georgia Southern University, Dublin Institute of Technology and also this year Boston College. Organiser’s also say that exciting plans are already being made to expand the Kennedy Summer School even further in 2018. The Summer School was founded in 2012 by Ballycullane native Noel Whelan who has continued to grow the reach of the summer school over the last five years alongside Sean Reidy. The CEO of the JFK Trust Sean Connick along with the Summer School team and the directors of this year's Summer School programme historian and author Dr Brian Murphy and UCG Law Lecturer and U.S. Politics Pundit, Larry Donnelly continue to take the school from strength to strength. The Kennedy Tea Party will take place at the Kennedy Homestead in Dunganstown during the annual Kennedy Summer School on the afternoon of Friday, September 8th, 2017. Special guests Paul Kelly Executive Pastry Chef at the Merrion Hotel and judge on the hit TV show ‘The Great Irish Bakeoff’, Kevin Dundon Chef and Proprietor of the

Dunbrody Country House Hotel & Restaurant in Co Wexford, Mike O’Conor Assistant Head, School of Culinary Arts & Food Technology at Dublin Institute of Technology and Margaret Roche Head Chef at Hugo Restaurant Dublin will collaborate to host the tea party in the famous farmyard in New

Ross. Tickets to this event are €12.50 and are available from St. Michael’s Theatre on 051 421255. Highlights at the 2017 Summer School include audiences with the speech writer for Barack Obama Cody Kennan, Ian Paisley Jnr MP on Brexit and it's various implications for Ireland, Bob

Shrum will reflect on his involvement in Edward Kennedy's 1980 presidential election campaign, Caitriona Perry on Translating Trump and a panel of experts on U.S. and Irish policies and politics. More than 35 guest speakers have been lined up to participate in a wide range of different subjects and organisers say that

Brexit and Ireland's relationship with the U.S. will feature prominently. The summer school have also gathered a panel of leading historians to assess the legacy of President John F. Kennedy, 100 years on from his birth and the Summer School will come to a close with an audience with Late Late host Ryan Tubridy on JFK and more.

T wo hundred and fift y years of ser vice

Between them they have given a total of two hundred and fifty years to the Priesthood and last week Bishop Denis Brennan mark a significant milestone in the lives of five Ferns priests when he hosted a special reception in their honour at Bishop's House. The Golden Jubilarians are Fr. Jimmy Ryan, Monsignor Denis Lennon, Fr. Tom McGrath Fr. William Oliver O'Neill and Fr. Robert Nolan. News Popular Enniscorthy playground re-opens following major refurbishment Enniscorthy’s much-loved Promenade Playground, has reopened following it’s major refurbishment. To mark the reopening y Councillor John Hegarty, Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, and Councillor Keith Doyle, Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District presided at a special ceremony to mark the reopening with the main focus on the

children who enjoyed the new facilities for the first time.. The €80,000 refurbishment contract was completed by Wexford-based company Crawford Group, who specialise in the design and construction of children’s play areas, skate parks and multiuse games facilities. The Department of Children & Youth Affairs provided a grant of

€20,000, while Wexford County Council invested the balance of €60,000 in the project. New state-of-the-art attractions in the playground include a central play unit with the Play-Odyssey Senior Tower with “Gun Powder Store” at top level, 2 tunnel double poly slides and many other fun features which will offer children

plenty of play value. Specialist sensory and special needs equipment are also included, including eco-tube chimes, an inclusive & fully accessible multi-user wheelchair roundabout and a wheelchair-accessible swing, in addition to a number of other play pieces. “The Council has consulted widely in relation to the new design features, including

valuable input from Wexford’s Comhairle na nÓg”, said Councillor Hegarty. “The resulting design has transformed and re-invigorated Enniscorthy Promenade Playground, ensuring it will continue to offer an enjoyable, inclusive and safe environment for children to explore and play, for many years to come” Councillor Keith Doyle

added his congratulations to those involved in the project. “This destination playground is a fantastic amenity for local people to enjoy. It will also help to attract visitors to our beautiful town from County Wexford and further afield, adding a welcome dimension to Enniscorthy Town’s growing reputation as a must-see tourist destination”

Many of the young people who attended the opening did not pay much attention to the speeches and formalities and instead spent their time enjoying the new playground equipment.

GER WALSH A&E can provide a very good service, sometimes the patients are the problem Bad experiences at A&E, long waiting times and horror stories about time spent in hospital Emergency Departments regularly make the headlines. In fact such is the picture often painted about various A&Es that some people are now reluctant to attend them, even when they need urgent medical attention. I have to say that it was with a certain amount of dread that I turned up at the A&E in Wexford Hospital over the August Bank Holiday weekend. As the story goes no time is really a good time to arrive at A&E but if you were to pick a really bad time then the

bank holiday weekend would be it. So it was with a bit of trepidation that I walked through the doors of the hospital midafternoon on the Holiday Sunday. My concerns were not lessened by having to struggle my way through an intimidating group of young people who looked rather menacing, to say the least. Once inside I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was no a mass of people waiting for attention. The lady on the reception could not have been more pleasant or helpful. However, as she took my details she was interrupted by an igno-

rant roar from one of the guys I had passed at the entrance. They were now back inside and wanted to return to a restricted area to their ‘mate’. And they were not prepared to wait which is why the lady on reception was subjected to some very unpleasant language. There are clear signs in the ED telling people to stand back behind a line to give those at reception a bit of privacy. The gentleman behind me either could not read or did not care to heed any notices because if he had stood any closer he would have been perched on my back. Formalities completed and

D’Arcy hits the ground running Michael D’Arcy is really finding his feet in the Department of Finance where he has been a Minister of State now for just over two months. Although banished to the backbenches by Enda Kenny, D’Arcy is not without talent and he has very clear views on several aspects of government policy. Over the course of the last couple of months he gave very interesting interviews to two national newspapers and both ended up as lead stories in the respective publications. He told the Daily Mail that high levels of personal taxes

were frightening off some international firms from Ireland and in an extensive interview with the Examiner earlier this month he suggested that a third lower rate of income tax was desirable to prevent people on average wages paying top tax rates on their wages. He also had interesting things to say about a welfare culture in some areas of the country. It all suggests that the Gorey man who for so long operated in the shadows of Paul Kehoe and Liam Twomey, has made a very

impressive start at the Department of Finance. Now that he has his hands so close to the purse strings people locally will be keeping a keen watch to see if he can deliver funding to projects in the county.

fee paid I waited for the triage nurse to provide an assessment which she did after about ten minutes. The Minor Injuries Clinic would be my next port of call and I went back to await the call which came within another ten minutes. As with the triage nurse the treatment could not have been more welcoming, friendly, thorough and reassuring. An X-Ray was required and a wheelchair arrived to take me there without any delay and I was back in the Small Injuries Clinic complete with x-ray within ten minutes. The experience was as positive as any visit to the hospi-

tal can be. Everything was operating efficiently and really it was an example of the health service at its best. I believe that had I visited the previous day things might not have been so speedy. Nevertheless I think it is worth pointing out that it’s not all bad at the ED and it does provide a very good service a lot of the time which is not something that gets highlighted regularly. However, a big problem for the ED, apart from lack of capacity at times, is the amount of hassle and disruption caused by people attending it. There was a time when drunken chaos visited the ED

only on Saturday night but the staff are contending with people literally out of their minds every night of the week at this stage. Indeed on that Sunday afternoon those who used foul and abusive language to the staff in midafternoon looked as if they had consumed more than a ham sandwich for their lunch. As much as anything else it is the disruption caused by unruly visitors to the hospital that cause delays and impacts adversely on the experiences of others. It is something which needs to be tackled with offenders barred completely from the hospital and its grounds if necessary.

Money must be found to develop Rosslare Port With work on both the New Ross and Enniscorthy by-passes making great progress access to the county is well on the way to being transformed. In particular the journey time between Wexford town and Dublin will be greatly reduced while the same will be true for all parts of the county and Waterford with the long tail backs in New Ross set to fade in to history. While these two projects are very welcome more needs to be done, particularly now that it

appears that Brexit is heading for a rather chaotic conclusion. If as seems likely there is a so called ‘hard’ Brexit then it will be important for Ireland to be able to optimise its direct links with Europe and in that context Rosslare Europort could become a vital link for our exports. There are plans at the moment to create a new entrance to the port and that project needs to be advanced as quickly as possible. Apart from the entrance the port

itself needs investment to ensure that it has the facilities to provide the nation with a vital link for its exports in a post Brexit area. The road from the Wexford Ring Road to the port also needs to be upgraded to ensure that it can cope with anticipated increased traffic volumes in the future and the possibility of using rail freight, both on the Dublin/Wexford line and the old Waterford/Rosslare line to the port should also be examined. Vacant houses will not provide a magic solution for homeless problem The month of August is normally a time when politics is pretty much suspended as everyone heads away for a bit of a break. This year has been a little different, influenced no doubt by the fact that most people believe that there will be an election within the next twelve months which meant that continued activity on the ground and over the airways was important, especially for those who will probably have to defend their seats in less than a year. One story that just would not go away, holidays or no holidays, was homelessness and all the issues that

surround it. To listen to some people now you would think the problem could be solved if only the vacant houses were brought into use. I know that it seems bizarre to have so many empty houses while thousands of people have no homes. However, the number of vacant properties as measured by the census is probably a gross over estimation of the actual number of empty houses that are really unoccupied. However, there is no doubt that there are a good number of houses around that could usefully be used by some of

those who are currently homeless. However, if the State has to go a legal route to get hold of them, regardless of any changes in the law, it will be a long and costly procedure. Apart from the legal costs, the cost of upgrading these properties to get them to meet various regulations would also be quite substantial, often greater than the price of actually building a new house. So I don’t think grabbing vacant properties from the elderly, ever how sensible it seems on paper, will do much to deal with the housing problem in the short term.

Leo Who? I loved the story about the J1 student who didn’t recognise Leo Varadkar when he turned up very casually dressed at the Chicago restaurant where she worked. She first kept him waiting and then seat him at a very small table in a corner. When she did actually realise who he was she said

she was ‘mortified’. Before he departed shed got Leo to pose for a pic with her and a mate which she posted on twitter with an account of the experience. But she need not have worried about failing to recognise the Taoiseach or the fact that she kept him waiting. Leo tweeted back

that the food and service were both first class. The irony of the whole thing is that despite the student not actually recognising the Taoiseach at first the subsequent photo and tweet meant that there was nothing low key or private about Leo’s visit to the restaurant.

A lesson in why you should take the bus to the airport It’s always a bit of a pain returning from a sun holiday, having to make your way through the airport, collect the luggage and then find your car. Often that involves a bus journey to the long stay car parks in the dead of night. Pain and all as it is spare a thought for Stephanie Bland. The thirty one year old

Londoner flew off to Portugal for a break with her boyfriend. She travelled to Stansted airport in her fifteen year old mini and handed it over to the meet and greet people for airport parking. Imagine her horror when on returning she found her car on the back of an AA truck with a seized engine and essentially a write off.

The airport told her it was all down to the age of the vehicle and wear and tear. She said the car was perfectly good when she left it and blamed reckless driving by airport staff. Lawyers are involved now. That’s why I think it is safer to let Wexford Bus do the driving when you are heading away for a break!

It was Wexford's biggest Children's Play Day It's the biggest Children's Play Day in the county and crowds flocked to Gorey Town Park again this year for the big event focused on families as part of the Gorey Market House Festival. While the Main Street and the various musical acts on the stage is the big attraction for thousands, the day in the Park is a really important part of the festival catering as it does for families. Gorey is Co. Wexford's

fastest growing area with a massive number of young families and this event at the height of the holiday season provides a great opportunity for people to come together and enjoy a great family focused family day out. There was a big line up of all star entertainers and attractions keep the young people occupied throughout the afternoon while many parents took the opportunity to relax and enjoy a picnic. With puppets, clowns, face painters, bouncy castles

and much more it was all go at the event which started at lunch. time and continued right through the afternoon One positive by-product of the event was that it helped tire out the children making a sound night's sleep very likely which was just what was needed by the adults as they headed out to enjoy the night time entertainment safe in the knowledge that baby sitters would have little to worry about.

Rock n Roll dancing in Square

Crowd on Raffter Street

Food, drink and music provide the perfect festival cocktail in Enniscorthy If you want Irish people to have a big party the two essential ingredients are food and music. Well there’s possibly a third, a little something to drink. In Enniscorthy they managed to get the mix just right for the Rock and Food Festival which kicked off August. The amalgamation of a few events from recent years has helped build this festival into something which attracts the crowds and has people coming back for more on an annual basis. For a start there is all sorts of food being cooked in the open air and under cover in the streets. There are even

open air bars to enable revellers soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a drink at the same time. And, of course the music and dancing in Market Square is the top of the bill for the event. The accomplished and well not so accomplished step it out side by side and do their thing on the dance board in the square. But some of those doing the dancing put in dazzling performances and had onlookers mesmerised. In Enniscorthy at least the perfect formula for a successful festival is to have plenty to eat and drink and a good spot for everyone to dance it all off.

Lifestyle Weather fails to dampen enthusiasm at Leo Carthy Festival During several decades in public life Leo Carthy was noted for his willingness to travel all over the county to help local communities with their festivals. He would sing, organise singers, organise musicians or act as MC, whatever the occasions demanded. He did it because he loved music, Irish traditional music in particular and he was also a

great supporter of community and community events. It is fitting now, several years after his death the former long time member of Wexford Co. Council is remembered with a festival in his own name in his native Our Lady's Island. This year's event was not blessed with good weather but it went ahead nevertheless with the

attendance enjoying the open air entertainment under whatever covered they could get. There was walking and running for the more energetic earlier in the day and even sheep racing during the afternoon festivities. Everyone had a really good time and Leo himself would have been delighted by the festivities. AND THEY'RE OFF The Sheep Racing is underway

In Castlebridge it is about the size of the cabbage, not the tractor It’s not about the latest high spec tractor, the prize bull, the showjumping or even the trade stalls. The Castlebridge Show is quite different to what you will experience at the other Shows around the county and country during the summer. It’s more about the biggest head of cabbage and largest onion than the biggest tractor Castlebridge is all about the local community and their pride in what they can produce. And what they produce annually for this highly successful event is truly mesmerising. You will witness absolutely perfect baking--------the quality of which even Mary Berry would find it hard to find fault with. On top of that the vegetables are truly spectacular. There were heads of cabbage, onions and much more which made the produce on the shelves of local supermarkets look like the leftovers of the main crop. Each year in gardens all

The Stanley - Core Warren Trophy for best Art Exhibit in show was presented by Helen Power to winner Lena Murphy,Ardcavan who is pictured here with her hubband Eddie Murphy

around the parish and beyond these vegetables are lovingly tended to for months with the Show Day in August always the clear target. And the great thing is that there is absolutely no sign of this great Wexford tradition dying out because new generations are coming along and they

are taking just as much pride in their displays as those who have gone before them over the decades. While the taking part is what matters in Castlebridge the winning is really something special and the competition here is quite fierce. And it’s not just baking

and garden produce. There are arts and crafts as well and children’s competition and all are equally well supported and competitive. Competition over the exhibitors can relax and enjoy the show day music and the famous Castlebridge refreshments in the tent.

News Age Action urges Wexford groups to organise events for Positive Ageing Week Age Action is calling on the community groups in Wexford to organise events around the county for Bank of Ireland Positive Ageing Week which takes place between Monday, 25th September and Sunday, 1st October. This is the 15th year of Positive Ageing Week and the theme for 2017 is ‘Back to the Future’ which focuses on getting all generations celebrating ageing in their local community. Justin Moran, Head of Advocacy & Communications, Age

Action said “Age Action’s mission is to make Ireland the best country in which to grow old and Bank of Ireland Positive Ageing Week is a hugely important part of that. “We want to bring generations together in the community and celebrate all aspects of ageing. Last year over 550 events took place and this year our goal is to have 600 nationwide. People can organise whatever they wish - from a coffee morning to a Grandparents Day at local schools to dancercise to cooking – whatever

they think would engage all age groups in their community. (See below for a starter list of event and/or theme ideas!). With Bank of Ireland Positive Ageing Week just four weeks away, we need communities to help us make this Week the best ever.,”. This year Bank of Ireland is the title sponsor for Positive Ageing Week. JJ Keyes, County Manager, Bank of Ireland, said, “We are delighted to sponsor Positive Ageing Week as part of our ongoing partnership with Age Action.

Bank of Ireland Positive Ageing Week is a great opportunity for our team nationwide to support this fantastic initiative within their local community and host events promoting positive ageing.” Events need to be registered by 5pm, Friday, 1st September, 2017. For event ideas and information on how to register an event visit https://www.ageaction.ie/how-you-canhelp/positive-ageing-week-201 7-sponsored-bank-ireland , email paw@ageaction.ie or call 01 475 6989
