Martin joins in night of celebrations for ex-TD Browne They gathered in large numbers in Enniscorthy last Thursday night to pay tribute to former Dail Deputy, John Browne, who retired from politics just over a year ago at the general election in 2016. Browne represented the Wexford constituency for thirty four years first winning a seat in the November 1982 general election. He went on to successfully defend it in seven subsequent elections and was the county’s longest serving TD at the time of his retirement. Camolin prepares for life after by-pass The village of Camolin is one of a number of locations which will be transformed when the extension of the M11 is opened in two years. Over the last two months Wexford County Council has been working with representatives from a wide range of community groups in the village and surrounding area to prepare ambitious plans for Camolin.. The Camolin Village Enhancement Scheme is a response by the local community, in conjunction
with Wexford County Council, to the challenges of the impending Enniscorthy Bypass and its possible effect on Camolin and surrounding area. The Scheme seeks to address these challenges by developing facilities and amenities that will enhance the attractiveness of the village, thereby benefiting the local community and encouraging more visitors into Camolin. Ideas put forward to date include a new picnic area, walled garden, attractive vil-
lage planting schemes, a new recreation area by the River Bann, walking track and a notice board for community activities. The children from Camolin National School have also embraced the opportunity to design new features for their village through participating in an art competition. Members of the public gathered in the local Parish Hall last week to hear an update on the proposals so far and to put their own views forward.

New service for Rosslare A new week service to Rosslare Europort began last Saturday. It is operated by Neptune Lines, a Greek shipping line. Last Saturday, the MV Neptune Dynamis arrived at the Europort, carrying import Renault and Peugeot vehicles, as well as Dacia, which have not previously been imported through Rosslare Europort. The service is scheduled to operate weekly between Santander, Le Havre, Southampton and Rosslare Europort, calling at Rosslare on Saturday mornings, and departing in the afternoon. John Lynch, General Manager of Rosslare Europort welcomed the new scheduled service, saying “we look forward to working with Neptune Lines to support them in ensuring the success of this new service.”

“ASK” Mental Health Campaign Gets Under Way When Frank Staples became Mayor of the Wexford Borough District last summer he made positive action on Mental Health one of his key priorities. As a man who has suffered from depression himself he was very well placed to understand the problem and the need for action. While the subject of Meanth Health and the issues surrounding it have been well up the agenda of most public representatives for quite some time the debate has mainly involved criticising the lack of services provided by the HSE in the Wexford area. Frank decided to attempt something different, something positive and after
months of planning he finally saw his campaign get off the ground last week when ‘Ask’ was officially launched in Co. Hall. The launch was the culmination of months of work by the Mayor and a committee of friends and supporters to raise awareness of mental health throughout the county and to encourage more transparency and openness regarding depression and other factors affecting mental well-being. And if the Mayor had any doubts about the level of support for his efforts they were answered in the most positive way possible by the huge turnout for the launch event. Youth and Sporting Organisa-

And he heard much praise for his efforts from the Council’s Chief Executive, Tom Enright, Minister Paul Kehoe and Council Chairman paddy Kavanagh. The “ASK” campaign takes the form of a series of 4 posters. Each poster depicts a person removing their “happyface mask” to show their “unhappy face” underneath – indicating their true feelings. Each poster carries the tag line “ASK – one conversation can save a life”. The posters are designed to encourage those who may be struggling or feeling down to ask for help while at the same time encouraging those who may be concerned about a friend, relative or colleague to simply ask that person if they are feeling OK or would like to talk. The launch included a talk by well-known Cavan goalkeeper Alan O’Mara, whose recent book “The Best is Yet to Come” tackles the stigma of depression and tells Alan’s poignant and insightful story of how he struggled to find his way through the dark, before discovering that the only way out of the darkness was to ask for help. Councillor Staples and his committee are supported in their efforts by a wide range of Wexford-based organisations who have come on board to help launch the campaign and spread it’s central message throughout their membership. News D’Arcy’s Coffee Morning for Daffodil Day Summer School Daffodil Day is a key date in the calendar for the Irish Cancer Society as it provides the organisation with its main source of funding. Thousands of volunteers from all walks of
life play their part in helping the effort and many other fundraising events are hosted by groups and individuals anxious to play their parts in the fundraising campaign.
Fine Gael TD Michael D’Arcy joined the effort last week when he hosted a Coffee Morning in support of Daffodil Day at his office in Charlotte Street in Wexford town.

Gorey’s Byrne-Perry Summer School will have a more comprehensive fringe programme this year. A business net-working event is also being planned for the town’s Innovation Hub.
The programme is still be progressed but the new elements will also include a Themed Walk from Ballymore House and include historical features to Gorey and a Tree Planting ceremony.
North Wexford tourism plan A Rural development Consultant has been commissioned to work with the core groups representing the various tourism providers in the North Wexford Region to move forward key objectives for the development of the industry in the area over the next two years. This follows the publication of a major scoping report on tourism in
North Wexford earlier this year. The key aims of the latest initiative will be to develop a short action plan for the current year and 2018 and to develop a Mission Statement that encapsulates the work and objectives of the group which will have the support of the local authority, Gorey Chamber of Commerce, Love Gorey and North Wexford Tourism.

Potential mature students get chance to try college life Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) is offering adults considering third level education the chance to sample college life on Wednesday, 12 April 2017. A limited number of spaces are available and the event is free of charge for adults over 22 interested in one of WIT’s 70 CAO courses which start at two-year level 6 Higher Certs and are available full-time and part-time. “We have moved our traditional two-day summer school event to the week before
Easter to give prospective mature students time to apply to the CAO before 1 May,” says Conor Phelan, Student Life and Learning Department at WIT. “It’s now run as a oneday event so it’s not too time consuming, while also giving people a realistic taste of college life and an insight to the commitment level required to attend college.” “Mature students can face obstacles, especially if re-entering the system after a prolonged absence from formal education many students
studying at the Institute have shown that these can be overcome,” Phelan adds. The one-day event follows a CAO Open evening planned for Tuesday, 4 April, meaning intending mature students have the opportunity to talk to lecturers and students, as well as familiarise themselves with the campus. In addition to a Mature Student Society, a network has also been established for students who are parents. “The return to education can be an intimidating prospect for
adults. During the taster session we set out to reassure the participants that their goals are achievable and that there is the support in place to make the transition to higher education as easy as possible” says Phelan. Wexford house prices up 14% in a year The price of the average three-bed semi in Co Wexford has risen 6.7% to €160,000 in the last three months, according to a national survey carried out by Real Estate Alliance. And prices in the county have risen by 14.3% from an average of €140,000 last March, the survey has found. The REA Average House Price Survey concentrates on the actual sale price of Ireland's typical stock home, the three-bed semi, giving an up-to-date picture of the property market in towns and cities countrywide for the first three months of the year. “Prices have taken a
significant jump in the first quarter due to an increase in demand and a particular decrease in supply,” said Robert McCormack of REA McCormack Corish, Wexford. Overall, the average house price across the country has risen by 10.9% over the past 12 months – a marked increase on the 7.7% rise registered to the end of December 2016. The average three-bed semi-detached in Dublin city now costs €404,167, a rise of €15,000 (3.9%) in the last three months and an increase of 12.8% over the past year, the Q1 REA Average House Price Index has found.
Wexford has 7,000 people with vision impairment Fighting Blindness has launched its first National Survey on Sight Loss and the people of Wexford have an important role to play. County Wexford has an estimated 7,121 people living with vision impairment and blindness and the charity is inviting all those affected to complete the survey
and give their views and experience. The information provided will help Fighting Blindness to tackle important issues and fight for changes in policy and the health service. Fighting Blindness Advocacy Manager, Caitriona Dunne, explained the significance of the campaign: “Fight-
ing Blindness is a patient-led charity and works on behalf of everyone in Ireland living with vision impairment and blindness. In order to represent people appropriately, we need to know what issues people face in their day to day lives and how best can we support them. So we are calling on people
and families affected by vision loss to give their views.” Fighting Blindness will also use the information collected to create a national network of Vision Impaired People (VIP’s). The VIP Network will serve as a platform to build awareness about vision loss throughout Ireland and create
greater understanding of what it is like to live with a vision impairment. “There can be a misconception that people are either fully sighted or completely blind, when in reality there is a whole spectrum of vision loss in between. . Fighting Blindness is conduct-

Oyster Lane announce 2017 Show and elect new committee Oyster Lane Theatre Group held their very successful AGM in the Talbot Hotel recently Wednesday where they elected their new committee for the 2017/18 season and also announced their October 2017 production. It was revealed that the society would be bringing the classic Broadway and West End smash hit musical ‘Footloose’ to Wexford. It will be performed in the Dun Mhuire Theatre during the Wexford Opera Festival from 23rd28th October. The musical is based on the cult classic 1984 film of the same name. It fea-
tures songs such as Footloose, Holding Out for a Hero and Let’s Hear it for the Boy. Oyster Lane are certain to prove successful at staging this well-loved musical which will be loved by the whole family! Also at their AGM, returning Chairperson Greg thanked the outgoing committee for their commitment and enthusiasm and congratulated the group on the fantastic success of their 2016 production of ‘Legally Blonde’ last October. He also wished the best of luck in the future to Paula Lowney, Mick Farrell and
Gillian Duggan White who were stepping down. Curracloe provided an idyllic venue for the Civil Defence Regional competition, hosted by the Civil Defence section of Wexford County Council. Teams from Carlow, Dublin, Cork South and Waterford joined Wexford’s Civil Defence team in a number of gruelling exercises throughout the day, designed to test each team’s abilities to respond to staged incidents involving multiple casualties. Elements of the competition included foot drill, missing person search, communications and two casualty / first aid scenarios, with team members challenged to manage the accident scene, treat / rescue casualties and triage casualties for transportation. The missing persons search competition tested the teams search capabilities in the challenging but ideal environment of the Raven forest with two missing casualties to be located. Teams were required to
plan the search, deploy search teams and setup a communications system to manage the search teams. The final events of the day were fun team challenges consisting of a sack race with 4 people in each sack and the use of three-person skis. These exercises were highly popular with the partaking teams and provided much enjoyment for the many attending spectators – but they were definitely not for the faint-hearted! Wexford Civil Defence volunteers provided the staff and equipment to run the day’s events, with their hard-working welfare team providing food and refreshments for over 120 people on the day. Food was prepared in Wexford Civil Defence Headquarters in Ardcavan and served on site from the Wexford Civil Defence mobile catering trailer, while the Army provided tents for the registration and food serving. The Sunny South East lived up to its reputation,
with glorious sunshine throughout the day contributing to a very enjoyable occasion for all taking part. The day’s activities were followed by a prize giving dinner at the Ferrycarrig Hotel. Among those attending were Mr Paul Kehoe TD, Minister with Responsibility for Defence, Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council Councillor Paddy Kavanagh and Mayor of Wexford, Cllr Frank Staples, The Department of Defence was represented by Mr. Stephen Hall while the Civil Defence Branch Training Section was represented by Róisín McGuire, College Principal and a number of staff members. Carlow Civil Defence proved to be worthy winners in the combined services element of the competition, while Waterford Civil Defence was victorious in the foot drill element. Minister Paul Kehoe presented the prizes to the winning team.

GER WALSH Garda figures will have little credibility in the future The raging controversy over the false or inaccurate data being provided by the Gardaí in relation to the number of people breathalysed for drunk driving, together with the fiasco over people being wrongly prosecuted in the courts for speeding, will shatter confidence in the Gardaí at all levels. The wrong prosecutions for speeding is a matter which will have a hearing in courts up and down the country over the coming months and expect many motorists to seek pretty large sums in damages as a result of their treatment. It appears that most people who gave evidence that they had no received the fixed penalty notice in the courts were treated as liars. Now it is fair to say that some probably were chancing their arms but if
any of those effectively accused of telling lies on oath are now shown not to have received a fixed penalty notice in the post they will have a pretty water tight case for damages and we are not talking about pocket money here. However, while these cases have been very damaging for individual motorists, the doubling of the number breath tests on the Garda computer system really leaves the reputation of the force in shreds. For example the local Joint Policing Committee bases most of its efforts on the statistics presented to the meetings by the Garda Chief. On one occasion in the past there was a suggestion from a member that the figures did not appear to represent reality on the ground but in general the committee accepts the
numbers presented as gospel. I am not for a minute suggesting that they are not accurate but going forward if anything presented appears either to be too good to be true or does not appear to reflect what public representatives are hearing on the ground, then there is likely to be much more questioning of what is being presented. This is all really unsatisfactory because accurate figures are important if proper strategies are to be pursued but in the current climate people will find it difficult to accept anything which comes from the Garda computer system. All these revelations could have a longer lasting effect on the criminal justice system as well. It is not uncommon for people facing criminal prosecutions to make all sorts of allegations against the Gardaí in
an effort to get clear of the charges which they face. In the past the evidence of the Gardai was generally accepted by juries. However, given all that has been revealed about the lack of truth and accuracy in so called facts presented by the force in recent years juries may not be so quick to dismiss any allegations, ever how outrageous, made against Gardaí in the future. This could have the unfortunate effect of seeing criminals walk free because jury members have a doubt about the Garda witnesses. That is why it is vital that comprehensive answers on exactly what was going on here are presented without delay and that the wrongdoers are booted out of the force. The fear in some circles is that if that happens there may be a lot of vacancies to be filled.
Honouring McGuinness There was a lot of talk in the wake of Martin McGuinness’ death about the change which his journey from man of war to defender of peace had brought about. In particular the attendance at his funeral would have been unthinkable a couple of decades ago. That same transformation was evident in Wexford too when three Fine Gael Council Chairmen were
involved in opening a Book of Condolence for the former Deputy First Minister. They were joined by two Fianna Fail Chairman and such a gathering to honour a former IRA boss would surely have been unimaginable not that many years ago. We have indeed travelled a long way along the journey but in the North itself it remains an uncompleted journey.
New system disappears councillors’ queries Last year the Co. Council introduced a new ‘customer service’ and ‘members support’ system for the councillors. The system, which was rolled out first in Gorey was supposed to be the answer to every councillor’s frustrations. They would log a complaint, watch it progress through the system, and get a full answer to their question in double quick time. There would be no more waiting on the phone to contact the right person, no more queries getting lost in the system and no more fob-
bing off. Councillors were naturally delighted. However, as is often the case with these things the delight quickly turned to even greater frustration and anger is now threatening. When Gorey councillors were provided with an update on the system recently something seemed very strange. The system showed that some councillors had not made a single representation to Co. hall in almost a year and in total just 120 queries’ had been raised--------half of them by a single member.
John Hegarty, who was recorded as making twelve queries, was quick to set the record straight. The reason the numbers were so low was that he, and others, had simply stopped using the new system because it did not work. It was ok for a straight forward matter like reporting a fallen tree, but when it came to complicated issues they really went nowhere with the system. And others agreed. But it seems no one in Co. Hall had any idea that the system had been discarded by members
Did dancing Garda double his votes? The victory of Aidan Mahoney in RTE’s very popular entertainment show Dancing With The Stars drew a lot of adverse comment with many viewers puzzled as to how he could defeat his two co-finalists who were clearly much better dancers. Well perhaps I have the
answer. You see Aiden is a garda and given the latest revelations which we have about the Gardaí appearing to be able to double count everything it’s no wonder the man in blue came out on top. His rivals didn’t stand a chance. If he got 100,000 votes he would have had no
bother at all quickly doubling that number with a little help from the Garda computer system leaving the other finalists struggling in his wake. But seriously, best dancer or not Aidan was a very gracious winner and the show itself was a really big hit with viewers.
Daniel’s ‘Beautiful Wexford’ I may not be a fan of Daniel O’Donnell, but I know a lot of people who are and his Bed and Breakfast Trip around Ireland is a very popular TV show. It was great therefore to
see him stopping off in Co. Wexford last week and being taken to Vinegar Hill for a visit. The view from the hill on the programme was spectacular as were some of the other images of the
county which were featured as he drove up from the Ballyhack ferry. Whoever was responsible for getting the show to visit Wexford, because these things rarely happen by accident, should take a bow.

They had better make their views know because soon the system would be the only vehicle for councillors to make representations. I can see this becoming a pretty hot issue over the next few months as councillors struggle for answers to their problems. However, if the object of the exercise was to cut down on queries it has been a spectacular success.
