« Prophet » Royal Robertson naît en Louisiane en 1936. Jeune homme, il migre sur la côte Ouest où il travaille alternativement dans les champs ou comme peintre d’enseignes.

Puis, il revient sur ses terres pour y veiller sa mère mourante et pour y épouser, en 1955, Adell, qui lui donnera 11 enfants.

Royal Robertson nous a laissé un grand nombre de superbes dessins, pancartes et tableaux. Il existe aussi quelques interviews, des textes et un documentaire : le mythe et les faits. Frédéric Allamel décrit dans un texte magnifique sa difficulté à approcher le personnage et à avoir accès à sa maison.

Ayant traversé plusieurs lignes de défense hérissées de messages menaçants, on atteint lentement le centre de la maison, où des dessins indiquent la voie de la libération, une spirale s’élevant vers le ciel, vers l’infini.

Sun Ra était, et est toujours pour certains, considéré comme un excentrique, un outsider. En ne voyant en lui qu’un fou isolé, un phénomène marginal qui n’a rien à voir avec l’Histoire, la culture noire ou la réalité, on minimalise sa portée. Cette forme de neutralisation culturelle est d’ailleurs fréquente dans l’appréciation des artistes afro-américains. Trop souvent, les expressions de la culture noire américaine sont vues comme des phénomènes exotiques en réaction à leur environnement. L’apparente facilité de cet art, son caractère ‘cool’ contribuent encore à le classer dans les arts mineurs.

Leurs créations sont détachées de la complexité d’une véritable identité culturelle, du contexte historique et social. Cet aveuglement dénote souvent une ignorance de la culture noire, mais trahit aussi une réticence à donner à l’art afro-américain une pertinence culturelle. Il permet surtout de maintenir une suprématie de la culture blanche profondément enracinée.

Les messes de l’église évangélique noire sont rythmées d’hymnes louant l’évasion loin de cette planète, dans le ciel et l’univers, en quête d’un monde meilleur qui échappe à l’éternelle lutte des races, une lutte qui discrimine fondamentalement l’homme de peau noire. Le concept de l’utopie et de la libération devient la force motrice de la culture afro-américaine (y compris hors de la religion chrétienne). Toutes ces références sont souvent passées sous silence ou faussement considérées comme des anecdotes exotiques.

Tout ce qui concerne Ra est imprégné du mythe de Saturne, la planète des anges, et d’éléments de la mythologie égyptienne.

Mais contrairement à des exemples qui apparaîtront plus tard dans la culture funk ou pop comme la « Mothership » et le Dr. Funkenstein de Parliament-Funkadelic qui font la part belle à la science-fiction, ou les albums concepts comme Tommy de The Who ou Sergeant Pepper’s des Beatles, il ne s’agit pas chez Sun Ra d’un concept, d’un habillage futuriste. Ra est à la ville comme à la scène, interloquant ses interlocuteurs lorsqu’il parle d’emblée des aspects hermétiques ou déraisonnables de son univers comme son origine, de la manière dont il a atterri ici...

Les références à l’Egypte ancienne, les liens avec les interprétations afro-centriques de l’Histoire du monde, l’inspiration puisée dans les sermons enflammés de prêcheurs évangélistes noirs, les citations de passages dans lesquels les révérends appellent les fidèles à les suivre au-delà des nuages pour se forger un nouvel avenir, un nouveau passé... C’est la première fois que j’écris un texte sur un artiste sans pratiquement évoquer son œuvre. Admirer l’œuvre fantastique de Royal Robertson sous l’œil bienveillant de Mike Kelley, Superman et Sun Ra me semble suffisant pour en saisir la profondeur.

Les maisons de rêve, les villes imaginaires, la transformation de sa maison en un bunker, une forteresse, les références au temps, aux versets bibliques, aux éruptions volcaniques et aux catastrophes nucléaires... toutes ces images prennent une signification abyssale quand on les replace dans leur contexte culturel. Quelque chose d’après moi qu’on ne trouve pas chez Roy Lichtenstein, mais certainement chez Sun Ra.

Royal Robertson produced a large number of stunning drawings, signs and paintings.

There are also a few interviews, texts and a documentary about him: the myth and the facts. Frédéric Allamel describes how getting to and into the house was a slow, drawn-out, exploratory process in a magnificent text. As you navigated through various lines of defence with threatening messages, you gradually edged closer to the centre of the house where drawings pointed you towards the path to deliverance, an upward spiral to heaven, to outer space.

We no longer have direct access to Royal Robertson or even to his house, which was destroyed in 1993 by Hurricane Andrew. The entire house and its many shrines, drawings and other objects, along with the garden

and the signs were obliterated. This calamity also provides a key to better understand his work: the alienation, the broken ties with his wife and family, the irreparable loss that transformed him into a bottomless pit, with no ties to earth, in search of a way out, of redemption and salvation in space.

In order to approach Royal Robertson’s work from this perspective, I want to share a few thoughts with you. They may serve as a filter and influence our interpretation of Robertson’s work.from magazines and crosses out with a pen until the portrait remains buried under the ink’s blackness, disappearing, as we have seen, in order to give way to the monster.

Royal Robertson does not exist in the here and now, he is everywhere, he is timeless… just like Sun Ra and the inhabitants of Kandor. [...]

Kal-el’s father, the scientist Jor-el, swaddled his son in a cape, after which he was rocketed to earth as an infant just before their planet Krypton was destroyed. Like a Moses from outer space, he landed in his futuristic reed basket in a tiny village in Kansas, where he was found and raised by farmers. Over time, his adoptive parents revealed his true parentage to him, after which he built his own place, “the fortress of solitude”, on the North Pole. Here he could come to terms with being himself and the loss of his parents and his identity.

Outside of this fortress of solitude, he was Clark Kent, and sometimes also Superman!

This modern myth has been the subject of many an essay and article. It is often described as a modern embodiment of the history of Judaism. Siegel and Shuster, Superman’s spiritual fathers, were American Jews and their comic book hero was created in the early Thirties. That is all people need to establish a link between the tale of Superman, Moses, the persecution of Jews in Europe, the quest for the promised land and so on.

More recently, one morbid detail from this myth also inspired a series of works by the American artist Mike Kelley.

A strange storyline developed in the Seventies, which are widely considered the “silver age” of the series. Just before the planet Krypton was destroyed, one of Superman’s antagonists stole the planet’s capital. The entire city of Kandor was shrunk and stored in a tiny glass bottle.

Superman was able to retrieve Kandor

from Brainiac, taking it back to his “fortress of solitude” where he cherished it. This miniature metropolis with its recognisable skyline pops up in various Superman adventures, always under a large bell jar, connected to bottles of oxygen. Superman regularly casts a nostalgic glance into the bell jar to see how life continues in the last vestige of his lost childhood.

From 1999 until 2011, Mike Kelley obsessively zoomed in on this detail, creating twenty large-scale, different variations on the motif of Kandor. These installations feature various versions of the city in the bell jar, sometimes in a cave and in different settings. The spectator is admitted to the superhero’s strictly personal sanctuary.

Obviously a Freudian reading of the cave in which our hero can keep his secret, where nobody is admitted and which his locked with a key that is so heavy that only our superhero can lift it, is possible.

But by repeatedly using this image, Mike Kelley no longer merely transforms it into a spatial model. Instead he transcends the mere reference to a pop icon by tirelessly repeating this detail. As a result, this image is inflated to such proportions that it takes on a different, more complex meaning within Kelley’s body of work. Together with the “educational complex” series, this cycle is thus an in-depth study of time, space and memory. The spatial installations, scale models, videos, images and so on together almost constitute a self-portrait.

Space is the Place Sun Ra is mainly remembered as an innovative jazz composer, band leader and pianist. From the Fifties onwards, he

was considered an innovative and unique force on the music scene in Chicago and subsequently in New York, developing a cosmic philosophy that combined ancient Egyptian religious symbols with futuristic science fiction and elements of gospel music.

response to their environment. They are seen as belonging to the “lighter” genre and this perception is only compounded by the effortless cool they exude. They are separate from the complexity of a “real” cultural identity, from history or from a social context. This often is due to ignorance but it also reveals a manifest unwillingness to see them as culturally relevant. Moreover, this hints at a deeplyrooted imbalance of power.

Sun Ra was not born on earth, he came from Saturn. Nowadays such an announcement would be laughed off as just another attention-grabbing marketing ploy of an artist. But in the late Fifties, artists were not in the habit of creating such a myth about themselves. In fact, this was downright unusual, especially if you were born in 1914 in Alabama as a black man. You have no choice but to be inventive if you are raised as a black man in a white, supremacist nation. Sun Ra’s myth was embodied in the costumes in which he and his Archestra performed, as well as in the artwork for his own label called Saturn, the projections during the performances, the lyrics and the titles… The myth of Saturn, of the planet of Sun Ra was and sometimes still is viewed the angels and the elements of Egyptian as an eccentric outsider. A lot of the songs of praise that are sung during mass in the African-American evangelical church refer to a flight from earth, to heaven and the cosmos, in search of a better world, away from the hopeless struggle that is so fundamentally discriminating for people of colour. The concept of utopia and deliverance as a driving force for African-American culture (also outside of Christian religion). All these references are often underexposed or misunderstood as exotic anecdotes.

The references to ancient Egypt, the links to Afro-centric interpretations of world history, the inspiration for the sermons of flamboyant, black evangelical preachers, the citing of passages in which they incite the faithful to follow them up, up and away, through the clouds and into outer space to start a new future, a new past… With the right set of references, this entire universe becomes so much more than just a masquerade. The prospects for a black man from Alabama were minimal at best on this planet. And for the most part, the situation has not changed much since then… Taking up arms, mobilising people for peaceful protests, building an own network, launching a countermovement…

These attempts all aim to restore the balance of power to a more equitable balance. Drawing on history to reveal hidden storylines and projecting them on another planet, another era is just another strategy for achieving this. It is an artist’s strategy. Because Sun Ra is and always will be the mysterious man who lives in a different time and space continuum. “You can call me Mr Ra, and you can call me Mr Re, or you can call me Mr Mystery”.

He only introduced a second, much more relevant dimension in his seemingly absurd message as the interview or performance progressed. Initially this may have seemed like an irrelevant detail but it took on a much deeper meaning when seen in the context of African American history. At first glance, a song like “Let’s go fly a kite” seems like a light-hearted note in Archestra’s set list. And it even becomes downright ludicrous when you see the band members enthusiastically pretend to fly a kite during the performance. But if you knew that a law from 1848 in “the black codes of the District of Columbia” banned African Americans from flying kites, then this absurd detail during the concert took on a whole new meaning. As a white Westerner, I am struck by the fact that I am not familiar with the associations or codes that African American artists use.

I would be very surprised if Royal Robertson knew Sun Ra, just as I would be equally surprised to learn that he had studied Superman’s adventures in great detail. We do know that he was an African American man, who was born in 1936 in Louisiana.

He shaped his world with the same ingredients as Sun Ra. Science fiction, the biblical references to Egypt, a heretical 27

I do not think that I have ever written a text about an artist that had so little to say on the subject of his work. Enjoying Royal Robertson’s work with Mike Kelley, Superman and Sun Ra looking over your shoulder is sufficient, I think, to understand this amazing work.

At the same time, I also think that he has succeeded in portraying this with the exceptional talent of a major artist, who has given his own atemporal interpretation to his cultural background, in his own unique manner.

Royal Robertson does not exist in the here and now, he is everywhere, he is timeless… just like Sun Ra and the inhabitants of Kandor.

They all populate his “fortress of solitude”, which was built out of revenge, as a consequence of a schism, a break-up, a loss that can never be recouped.
