L'art brut est l'expression d'une mythologie individuelle, affranchie du régime et de l'économie de l'objet d'art. Ces oeuvres sans destinataire manifeste sont produites par des personnalités qui vivent dans l'altérité – qu'elle soit mentale ou sociale. Leurs productions nous renvoient tantôt à la métaphysique de l'art c'est-à-dire à la pulsion créatrice comme tentative d'élucidation du mystère d'être au monde - tantôt au besoin de réparer ce monde, de le soigner, de le rendre habitable.

Art Brut is the expression of an individual mythology liberated from the system and economy of the art object. This work, produced with no clear audience in mind, is created by individuals who live in "otherness", be it psychological or social. Sometimes it draws our attention to the metaphysics of art - the creative urge as an attempt to elucidate the mystery of existence - and at others, to the need to repair the world, to care for it, to make it habitable.

En examinant le projet de John Urho Kemp (1942-2010), nous revient l’interrogation essentielle de Marcel Duchamp : “peut-on faire une oeuvre qui ne soit pas d’art ?”

Cette question ne peut trouver de réponse autrement qu’en nous obligeant, non pas simplement à définir l’art - mais à définir l’Homme ; en remontant à la source originelle de son élan créateur.

Il est probable que le premier objet d’art fut à la fois magique et cultuel. Magique car investi de la mission de livrer la clé d’un ailleurs. Cultuel parce que chargé des symboles qui fondaient la relation de l’Homme à son grand mystère. Mais alors, la science à chaque fois que celle-ci dépasse ses fonctions utilitaires - ne deviendrait-elle pas une discipline de l’art, ou l’un de ses prolongements ? Les savants de l’Antiquité comme ceux de la Renaissance n’étaient-ils pas tout à la fois artistes, poètes, mathématiciens, métaphysiciens ? N’est-il pas, dès

lors, nécessaire de penser le Monde dans cette complexité mêlée de rêverie ? N’estce pas la condition même de la transcendance ? Comme le faisait John Urho Kemp, l’artiste ne doit-il pas chercher sans relâche la clé et la formule ?

Kemp se servait des mathématiques, de la physique et de la géométrie comme d’ingrédients poétiques qu’il jetait dans sa marmite d’enchanteur. Tandis que les esprits obtus n’y voient qu’une pseudo-science, les esthètes - qui ne vivraient l’art, au mieux, que comme une manie décorative et, au pire, comme un spectacle - ceux-là resteront aveugles à cette contemplation des confins de la raison. Qu’une telle entreprise s’apparente par moments à de la démence nous rappelle simplement le postulat socra-

tique selon lequel “les plus grands bienfaits nous viennent de la folie”. À travers des expositions comme The Alternative Guide to the Universe à la Hayward Gallery à Londres (2013), le Palazzo Enciclopedico de la Biennale de Venise 2013 et, dans une certaine mesure, Le Bord des Mondes au Palais de Tokyo à Paris (2015), une vision de l’art plus ample, plus syncrétique, semble tracer de nouvelles voies d’exploration. Et, à chaque fois, l’art brut en est le substrat capital.

Et en dépit du fait que nous soyons - comme l’écrit Gaël Charbau - “inadaptés à l’infini”, John Urho Kemp - à travers son observation recueillie de la nature, nous livre davantage qu’un code inviolable : il témoigne de l’aspiration humaine la plus noble, celle de vouloir donner du sens. Au risque que, pour un temps, les boussoles s’affolent dans ce triangle des Bermudes.

Gaël Charbau est directeur artistique et commissaire indépendant vivant à Paris.

Il a fondé « Particules » en 2003, un journal d’art indépendant gratuit qu’il a dirigé jusqu’en 2010. Il collabore avec la Fondation Hermès depuis 2012 et avec le programme Audi Talents depuis 2013. De 2014 à 2017, il a été responsable de la programmation arts visuels au Collège de Bernardin à Paris. En 2014, il a créé avec Laurent Dumas et Angélique Aubert la « Bourse Révélations Emerige », dédiée à la promotion des jeunes artistes français. Depuis 2015, il est conseiller artistique pour Universcience (Cité des sciences et Palais de la découverte). En 2018, il était directeur artistique de la 18eme édition de Nuit Blanche, à Paris. En 2020, il est nommé directeur artistique du village olympique et paralympique.

Un mystique, messager auto-proclamé, un savant alchimiste, un érudit entouré de mythes et de symboles ? Et ce qu’il nous a laissé, s’agitil d’une « oeuvre » au sens où le milieu de l’art entend ce mot habituellement ? Probablement pas. Les recherches de Kemp postulent l’existence d’un grand mystère sous-jacent, ce sur quoi nous sommes probablement tous à peu près d’accord. Il suffit en effet de fuir nos villes et quitter nos écrans quelques heures d’une nuit d’été, de lever les yeux vers cette surface couverte d’étoiles au-dessus de nos têtes, infiniment

profonde, pour qu’immédiatement resurgisse quelque chose de ce qui constitue notre unité, notre humanité. Nous sommes bien ridiculement infimes, perdus là dans l’Univers et dépassés par les échelles inouïes qui nous débordent, qu’importe la direction où se porte notre regard. Nous sommes, en quelques sortes, inadaptés à l’infini.

Avec obsession sans doute, il a couché des kilomètres de chiffres comme une forme de mantra mathématique, un chant alphanumérique dont il semblait le seul à pouvoir interpréter les paroles.

Kemp diffusait en effet gratuitement des « offrandes » 3, ces petits dessins photocopiés de quelques centimètres carrés qui condensaient ses méditations alphanumériques. Il les donnait à des inconnus ou les laissait sur des pare-brises. intitulé « The Mark Of The Beast », daté du 21 novembre 1999, raconte par exemple comment Kemp découvrit et photographia le 20 août 1999 un pentagramme inversé, près de la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims, quelques jours après avoir observé l’éclipse totale de soleil du 11 août.

On aurait pu dresser un rapide portraitrobot énigmatique de « Cosmic John » avant sa mort : résident de Berkeley, chasseur d’éclipse végétarien, portant barbe et cheveux longs au volant d’un mini-bus Volkswagen, fréquentant régulièrement les sources d’eau chaude du comté de Marin, près de Stinson Beach en Californie.

Connu des quelques personnes fréquentant ses sources. C’est à peu près tout ce qu’on sait de lui et ça suffirait à faire un bon film des frères Coen.

L’ensemble de ses dessins semble en réalité un bien étrange mélange à la croisée des mondes scientifiques et des spéculations spirituelles, mais aussi sectaires : les mentions, dans différents papiers, de la destruction du soleil par une bombe à hydrogène ne sont pas sans évoquer une forme d’adaptation des « théories » de la scientologie. En 1982 et 1983, trois lettres émanant de l’Église de Scientologie californienne lui sont d’ailleurs adressés. Mais on trouve dans les pièces qu’il nous a laissés tout aussi bien des révisions de la célèbre équation d’Einstein que des études sur le cristal de quartz, ce qui vaut à Kemp un autre de ses surnoms, « Crystal John ».

Mais en ne regardant les pièces qu’il nous a laissées que sous l’angle de messages indéchiffrables et probablement illuminés, on finit par rater la force énigmatique de l’ensemble graphique qu’elle constitue.

Avec une extrême économie de moyen, Kemp est parvenu à fixer un langage plastique tout à fait personnel et singulier. Audelà du fond, les formes que prennent ses compositions sont d’une grande diversité, laissant parfois beaucoup respirer la feuille blanche en disséminant quelques signes

et inscriptions ici ou là, ou au contraire en saturant complètement le support. Parfois encore, la composition ne repose que sur quelques rectangles ou carrés qui s’équilibrent dans la feuille, ailleurs il s’agit au contraire d’une figure centrale qui distribue l’ensemble des motifs qui semblent graviter ou flotter autour d’elle. Tantôt c’est un sentiment de chaos et d’éclatement qui domine, avec différents ajouts et surimpressions et d’autres fois c’est au contraire la rigueur de la grille orthogonale qui fige le dessin.

C’est ici un autre regard qui se pose sur les travaux de cet artiste qui ignorait peutêtre qu’on puisse les approcher non plus comme des messages ou des « révélations », mais bien comme des œuvres autonomes, des mondes clos distribuant leurs propres règles plastiques. Ce que nous regardons, c’est la trace que cet homme nous a laissée dans le temps de son existence, comme s’il était parvenu à transmettre cette équation profonde, intime et précise d’un être humain en activité.

Quelque chose, dans ces bouts de papier, nous met dans la position d’un archéologue. Sauf que d’avance on sait que rien n’expliquera le pourquoi, le comment. C’est ici pure gratuité, plaisir de l’exercice. Avec la disparition de « Cosmic John », la clef s’est envolée. Comme dans la nuit d’été étoilée, nous voilà, de toute part, embarrassés de signes.

Daniel Baumann: Comment avez-vous dé- la validité de ses formules mathématiques.

DB Comment interprétez-vous la relation entre toutes ces pages?

AM Quand j’ai commencé le tri de son travail, j’ai trouvé de nombreuses ébauches de dessins et de calculs qu’il compilait pour ses offrandes. Il est devenu clair que les offrandes étaient l’assemblage d’une grande quantité de matière que je pense finalement toute issue de sa pratique de l’écriture de millions de chiffres sur des rouleaux de papier. Je pense qu’il était une sorte de graphomane, mais c’était peutêtre aussi pour lui une forme de médiation.

AM Il y a cette question de savoir comment faire face à la vie. La plupart d’entre nous utilise ce que l’éducation, la religion, la société et la famille en termes de structures leur ont apporté pour se forger un sens des valeurs et mettre leurs expériences en perspective. Cela inclut l’idée - c’est même une évidence dans ce cas - que chaque individu doit y ajouter une petite touche personnelle. Nous voulons être des individus, mais pas trop. Pourtant, certains s’aventurent bien plus loin. Ils construisent de vastes mondes privés qui restent non partagés, mais sont aussi, dans la plupart des cas, confus et plutôt inintéressants.

Très peu trouvent le moyen de modeler ce contenu non conventionnel et souvent très syncrétique pour lui donner une forme cohérente qui le rende accessible, au moins en partie. Il est encore plus rare que cette forme atteigne un niveau exceptionnel, ce que l’on appelle de l’art. Je pense que John l’a réussi. Les chiffres ont évidemment un sens, ils sont froids, scientifiques, rationnels, même beau, mais s’ils sont utilisés d’une manière différente, dans un but différent, ils se transforment en quelque chose d’autre. Ils sont donc à la fois « pur » et « baroque ». John a pris cette voie, non pas seulement pour un voyage temporaire, mais depuis des décennies. J’admire vraiment cette insistance, que certains appellent obsession, mais pour moi, il est synonyme d’indépendance et de courage. À partir du moment où vous construisez et devenez dépendant d’un langage qui

Le concept global du travail de John est peut-être que tout est dérivé de ses expériences de vie. Il a parcouru le monde à la recherche d’éclipses solaires. In examining the project of John Urho Kemp (1942-2010), the essential question of Marcel Duchamp returns to us: “Can we produce any work that is not art?”

“This question can only find an answer by obligating us not only to define art, but to define Man; by going back to the original source of his creative urge.

It is probable that the first artistic object was both magical and religious. Magical because invested in the mission to deliver the key to an unknown place. Religious because charged with the symbols that founded the relationship of Man to his great mystery. But then wouldn’t science – each time it goes beyond its utilitarian function – become an artistic discipline, or one of its protractions? Weren’t the scholars of Antiquity, like those of the Renaissance, artists, poets, mathematicians, metaphysicians, all

at once? Isn’t it, consequently, necessary to imagine the World through this complexity mixed with reverie? Isn’t it the very condition of transcendence? As did John Urho Kemp, doesn’t the artist have to persist in seeking the key and the formula?

Kemp used mathematics, physics and geometry as poetic ingredients that he would throw in his magician’s cauldron. While obtuse spirits only see a pseudo-science in this, esthetes – who supposedly only experience art, at best, as a decorative compulsion and, at worst, as a spectacle – will remain blind to this contemplation of the confines of reason. That such an enterprise should at times appear related to dementia

simply reminds us of the Socratic postulate according to which “the greatest benefits come to us from folly.”

Through exhibits like “The Alternative Guide to the Universe” at the Hayward Gallery in London (2013), the “Encyclopedic Palace” (Palazzo Enciclopedico) of the Biennale de Venise (2013) and, to a certain extent, “The Edge of Worlds” (Le Bord des Mondes) at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris (2015), a more ample vision of art, more syncretic, seems to trace out new paths for exploration. And, each time, Art Brut is the capital substrate of it.

And despite the fact that we are – as Gaël Charbau writes – “ill-adapted to the infinite», John Urho Kemp, through his collected observation of nature, delivers more to us than a sacrosanct code: he attests to the most noble human aspiration, that of wanting to give meaning. At the risk of having, for a time, the compasses go crazy in this Bermuda triangle.

Gaël Charbau is a an artistic director and independent curator living in Paris. He founded « Particules » in 2003, a free independent art newspaper that he directed until 2010. He is curator for the Hermès Foundation since 2012 and for Audi Talents since 2013. From 2014 to 2017, he was responsible for fine art at the College de Bernardin in Paris. A mystic, selfproclaimed messenger, a learned alchemist, an erudite surrounded by myths and symbols? And what he left behind for us, is it a “work” in the sense that the art world typically understands this word? Probably not. Kemp’s research postulates the existence of a great, underlying mystery, something on which we probably all more or less agree. It is enough to escape our cities and leave our screens for a few hours during a summer night, to look up towards that surface covered in stars over our heads, infinitely profound, for something of

that which constitutes our unity, our humanity, to immediately resurge. We are indeed ridiculously infinitesimal, lost there, in the Universe and surpassed by the unheard of scales that outflank us, never mind the direction in which we gaze. We are, in a sense, ill-adapted to the infinite.

Kemp sought to account for this mystery without boundaries, overtaken by the accident of our presence, by using numerals and geometry, probably convinced that an underlying order “encoded” the Universe.

formulas, numerical sequences that add up, pile up, and run into each other on an impressive accumulation of paper media, from perforated printer paper of a many meters to little cards of a few centimeters.

Surely obsessively, he laid down kilometers of numbers like some form of mathematical mantra, an alphanumeric song whose words he alone seemed able to interpret.

Certain drawings and diagrams offer, for example, equations showing how to find the path to sacred cities, through the study of a dodecahedron. Sometimes the mathematical figures seem to refer to the “Freemason’s Cipher,” a principle itself drawn from the “Templar Cipher,” a method for geometrically representing letters of the alphabet depending on the position they occupy in a pre-established grid. A drawing in the form of an equation, dated February 29, 1996, is called The Miracle Formula of Life. At the bottom of the sheet, Kemp specifies: “this formula was recently (about two weeks ago) imparted to me in a dream after giving out copies of “A Formula for a Miracle”.”

grapher and friend of John Urho Kemp to whom we now owe the conservation and archiving of a part of his works on paper, Kemp’s research was probably inspired by the unique studies of certain mathematicians.1 Among them, it is useful to cite Abraham de Moivre (1667-1754), a friend of Leibniz, known for having predicted the exact day of his death, or even Georg Cantor (1845-1918), famous for his research on the theory of infinite sets. Both “saw” what they considered to be a manifestation of God in their research.

And indeed, in Kemp’s “works,” Biblical references are numerous. “Saint John 1:1,” “Saint Luke 4:32-34,” “Revelation 19:11-16,” appear, for example, at the bottom of a figure entitled “The Word,” in which a star and different geometric forms contain the words “God,” “Noah,” and “Jesus.” It is also often a question of the supposedly evil number 666, representing the number of the beast. A paper called “The Mark of the Beast,” for example, dated November 21, 1999, tells how Kemp discovered and photographed an inverted pentagram on August 20, 1999, near the Notre-Dame catheKemp would in fact distribute free “offe- dral of Reims, some days after observing rings,” these little drawings of a few square the full eclipse of the sun from August 11th. centimeters that condensed his alphanumeric meditations. eclipses, wearing a beard and long hair at the wheel of a Volkswagen minibus, regularly frequenting the hot springs of Marin county, near Stinson Beach in California, known by the few people frequenting the springs. This is about all we know of him and that would be enough to make a good Coen brothers film.

All of his drawings in reality appear to be a very strange blend at the crossroads of scientific worlds and spiritual speculations, but also sectarian: the mention, in different papers, of the destruction of the sun by a hydrogen bomb tends to evoke a form of adaptation of the “theories” of scientology.

In 1982 and 1983, three letters from the Californian Church of Scientology were even sent to him. But we equally find in the pieces that he left us some revisions of the famous Einstein equation as well as studies of the quartz crystal, which is what got Kemp one of his nicknames, “Crystal John.”

The esoteric healers attribute to this crystal the capacity, namely, to balance “vital energy”…

But in looking at the pieces he left us only from the angle of indecipherable and probably enlightened messages, we end up missing the enigmatic force of the graphic ensemble that it constitutes. With an extreme economy of means, Kemp managed to fix an entirely personal and unique artistic language. Beyond the meaning, the forms that his compositions take are of a great diversity, sometimes really allowing

autonomous works, closed worlds dispensing their own artistic rules. What we see is the trace that this man left us during the time of his existence, as if he had managed to pass on this profound, intimate and precise equation of an active human being.

Something in these bits of paper puts us in the position of an archeologist. Except that we know ahead of time that nothing will explain the why, the how. It is pure gratuitousness, pleasure in the exercise. With the loss of “Cosmic John»,” the key has disappeared. Just as in the starry summer night, there we are, from all sides, burdened with signs.

the white sheet of paper to breath by sprinkling a few signs and inscriptions here and there, or on the contrary, completely saturating the paper. Other times still, the composition rests on only a few rectangles or squares that are balanced on the sheet, elsewhere there is rather a central figure that distributes the ensemble of motifs that seem to gravitate or float around it. Sometimes it is a feeling of chaos and rupture that dominates, with different additions and superimpositions, and other times it is rather the rigor of the orthogonal grid that fixes the drawing.

It is here that another gaze fixes itself on the works of this artist who was perhaps unaware that we could approach them not as messages or “revelations” but rather as

Daniel Baumann: How did you come across John Urho Kemp’s work?

Aram Muksian: It was only a short while after meeting John that I became aware of his work. The first time I came across this material was when he asked me if I would like to have «an offering». This was in 2007. Just about every time I ran into John he had a new offering to distribute.

DB What exactly were these offerings?

AM They were double-sided, xeroxed pages that were usually about 4x5 inches.

They were very dense in terms of the amount of drawings and calculations he could organize in that space. I never asked John to explain his work to me, though I had the impression that anyone with an advanced knowledge of mathematics would understand what all of his numbers were leading to.

DB There are some comments online where they say that the numbers do not make sense, at least not in a conventional way.

AM I wouldn’t be able to verify the accuracy of John’s findings to refute such claims, though it does seem that more people were concerned by his leafletting habit rather than the validity of the mathematics he used. John’s exploration

of metaphysics included idiosyncratic and perhaps compulsive work. I have been researching other mathematicians throughout history that may have inspired John’s philosophical views and who also utilized mathematics as an expression of revelation. Such mathematicians include Abraham de Moivre, who calculated the time of his own death; Kurt Gödel, who saw rational belief in the afterlife and who starved himself to death; Georg Cantor, who viewed his work in numbers coming from a direct communication with God; and others such as Alexander Grothendieck, Paul Erdős, and John Nash.

DB Can you say how much of his work you could save?

AM A friend of John’s salvaged them from the the remains of an estate sale that was held after his passing. He handed me over several garbage bags worth of material that I began sorting through for the purposes of a temporary installation (pages 14-15). While at the time I was overwhelmed by how much material there was, I now realize that much of his work was lost after his death. For instance, I found very little original material from the 1980s.

DB Is there a narrative, a story, a concept that keeps these thousands of pages together?

AM When I began sorting through this work I found many drafts of drawings and calculations that he compiled together for the offerings. It became clear that the offerings were edited down from large bodies of material that I believe ultimately all derived from his practice of writing millions of numbers on scrolls of paper. I think it was a form of graphomania, but it was perhaps also a form of mediation for him.

An overarching concept to John’s work may be that it was all derived from his life experiences. He traveled the world seeking out solar eclipses, he wrote extensively about a bottle that washed ashore with a child’s note inside, and a satanic symbol that he found scrawled on a bathroom wall and an ongoing dispute he was having with a tenant were some instances that seemed to inspire his work. His work was also a means of self-examination. For instance, when John developed a mole on his leg he told me that it was the result of previous wrongdoing in his life that stemmed from eating meat and eggs. Through his work he sought to solve this problem, or at least attain some insight as to the where the origins of the problem lay.

I wonder if my perspective is skewed because I knew John personally. How do you interpret the relationship between all of these pages?

DB There is this question of how to cope with life. Most of us use what education,

religion, society and family offer in terms of structures and values to make sense and put our experiences into a perspective. This includes the idea - it’s even a request around here - that each individual should add some personal touch. We want to be individuals, but not too much. Yet, some venture way further.

They build extensive private worlds that remain unshared, but also are, in most cases, confused and rather uninteresting.

Very few find a form that moulds the unconventional and often highly syncretic content into something coherent that makes it accessible, at least partly. Even fewer are able to push this form on a level where it becomes exceptional, call it art. I think John did it. Numbers are obviously one way, they are cold, scientific, rational, even beautiful, but if used in a different way, for a different purpose, they turn into something else. So they are both «pure» and «baroque». John goes there, not just as a temporary flip or trip, but for decades.

I do admire this insistence, which some call obsession, but to me it stands for independence and courage. Since you build and depend on a language that ultimately only speaks to you, it makes you lonely.

We found this short biography online written by John himself in 2009. I think it’s good to put it out there. It is very concise but says a lot. « Attended U.C. Berkeley, graduated with B.S. in Chemical Engineering. Worked for Union Oil of California for 18 months.

Then quit to study Scientology in England and Los Angeles until 1971. Lived in Los Angeles for about 11 years operating a store dealing in used and [sic] antiques.

Became very interested in philosophical and metaphysical research. Moved back to Berkeley in early 80’s and continued research. Attended meetings of the Institute of Divine Metaphysical Research in 1998 and later became and still am a member. Interested in healing and rejuvenation through hot springs and diet.»

DB Where do you think his work should ultimately live?

AM I am in the process of completing a web-based archive arranged in chronological order that will contain everything John created, excluding the thousands of pages filled purely with numbers. Doing so would make his work available to a wider audience than perhaps what John was able to accomplish through leafletting his offerings . I believe in keeping the collection together in some form, and in making the work accessible to anyone interested in studying it further.

I would like to see this work go to U.C. Berkeley or some other institution in California that could both safely store and be willing to share this material with the public. I also believe that reproductions of his work should be made available in a variety of sizes, essentially keeping his work alive through circulation, which is something I hope the web archive can make possible. www.arammuksian.com

An overarching concept to John’s work may be that it was all derived from his life experiences.

He traveled the world seeking out solar eclipses, he wrote extensively about a bottle that washed ashore with a child’s note inside, and a satanic symbol that he found scrawled on a bathroom wall and an ongoing dispute he was having with a tenant were some instances that seemed to inspire his work.
