Franco Bellucci disparaît en 2020, emportant avec lui l’énigme de son langage plastique. Ses plus récentes expositions - tant par la galerie ou la Maison rouge, à Paris, que par la TregerSaint Silvestre collection, au Portugal - ne sont pas parvenues à épuiser les questions que son œuvre nous pose.

Né à Livourne en 1945, Bellucci a commencé à créer des objets à la fin des années 70, canalisant ainsi ses pulsions destructrices et les conciliant – par l'emploi fréquent de jouets – avec l'état d'enfance auquel une encéphalite l'avait assigné dès le plus jeune âge. Privé de parole, il s'est alors mis à produire, en procédant par hybridation, des objets que l'on perçoit tantôt comme transitionnels, tantôt comme fétiches.

invisible dans ses œuvres. Dans le cas de Bellucci comme chez Scott, l’incapacité de parler concentre l’attention dans la production d’un langage visuel. Leur rapprochement à l’objet est charnel et acharné, c’est un corps à corps. Bellucci, lui, ne cherche cependant pas à cacher ou dissimuler le contenu de ses assemblages. À la différence des cocons magiques de Scott, chez lui tout est révélé, explicité, « dit » dans la complexité de l’ensemble. L’accent n’est pas dans la mise en forme mais dans la tension qui dérive du geste lieur primordial.

Parfois, ce geste est presque un défi aux lois de la nature et aux possibilités d’extension d’un objet. L’imposition virile de la force est un aspect qui marque son travail et qui l’éloigne du geste de Pascal Tassini, pour qui le liage de ficelles de tissu suit un geste

On devine le plaisir que lui procure la découverte du potentiel de chacune de ses trouvailles. L’objet révèle dans ses mains la capacité d’être détourné et de devenir lien avec un autre. C’est ainsi qu’en explorant la faculté d’être une unité de chaque élément isolé, l’ensemble finalement réunifié manifeste toute la puissance des contradictions.

C’est alors l’épiphanie et la stupeur pour le regardeur, car comme dit Bachelard : tout s’active quand s’accumulent les contradictions. En effet la tension sous-jacente de ces objets est telle qu’on pourrait parler d’œuvre active par rapport à la passivité d’un certain art qui, malgré une touche de convulsion artificielle, ne parvient pas à susciter un vif sentiment de désarroi. Leur fébrile vitalité dérive d’un processus de gestation qui est partie intégrante de l’œuvre.

L’œuvre collectée qui aujourd’hui arrive à nous n’est que le sommet d’un iceberg fascinant et trompeur.

L’œuvre active est commencée bien avant, elle est faite en se faisant et comme dit Breton à propos des fétiches, « (ils) ne sauraient être montrés qu’en l’un des moments de leur lente métamorphose ». Dans un processus de création et de ré-création syncopé par le son, le geste de Bellucci s’empare de ceux de chamans africains, dont le geste compte plus que les objets qu’ils produisent.

Le caractère tridimensionnel des œuvres de Bellucci nous invite à les découvrir, à tourner autour, car chaque angle de vue est une faille qui continue à dégager de l’énergie. Ces formes indéfinies n’apaisent pas le regard, leurs intrications proviennent d’une libération d’énergie par les contraintes exercées sur la matière. Comme les images

Si créer est aussi une façon de revenir aux chemins de l’enfance, les conditions de vie de Franco le prédisposent à accomplir des actes de détours symboliques et créatifs inattendus. Dans le plaisir et la simplicité d’un jeu, ils représentent et sauvegardent un moi fragilisé. Comme des infinies fatigues herculéennes dont l’enjeu devient conjuration, cri libératoire pour que le héros du commun parvienne à transformer son sort. Les artistes d’art brut en sont toujours une preuve et cependant, pour nous leurs admirateurs, leurs œuvres sont des puissances d’encouragement, au-delà des concepts subjectifs et temporaires comme ceux de beauté/laideur. En dépassant les éclipses les plus longues, ils continuent en dépit de louanges ou de blâmes, à dégager des faisceaux de lumière. La lumière qui vient de la nuit la plus obscure.

Franco Bellucci disappeared in 2020, taking with him the enigma of his plastic language.

His most recent exhibitions, both by the gallery or the Maison Rouge, in Paris, and by the Treger-Saint Silvestre collection, in Portugal, have not managed to exhaust the issues that his work raises.

Born in Livorno in 1945, began creating objects at the end of the 1970s, thus channeling his destructive inclinations and reconciling them – through the frequent use of toys – with the state of immaturity that the onset of encephalitis had restricted him to at a very young age.

Deprived of speech, he then began to tirelessly produce, through hybridization, objects that at times seem transitional, at times like fetishes.

If, in Franco Bellucci’s work, the idea of reconstruction – or even that of fixing, so dear Kada Attia – imposes itself in the first place, it is hard not to think of an act of resilience when one learns that, as a young adult, he

spent years tied to a restraint bed to tame his agitation, which can easily be attributed to his inability to express himself. That is, until he discovered that objects could give him back his speech.

Indeed, how could we not be taken by Bellucci’s immutable ritual, holding the objects that he ties, twists, kneads, bruises and recomposes against his stomach. If we consider for a moment that the stomach is understood in certain Oriental and Greek philosophies to be the seat of the soul or, at the very least, of the epithumia – desire – we see the amount of vital, primordial energy that could animate these creations.

The desire for absolute control, for total mastery of the forces that escape us, is often at the heart of practices tied to Art Brut. An excessive desire that, once transformed into action, generates new ways of organizing the world, and even more, establishes new worlds.

we find the anxiety of being abandoned by one’s parents, troubled sleep, nightmares, irritability and aggression. That had a fundamental influence in the construction of physical but also metaphorical objects, an activity which brings him moments of joy and satisfaction.

Looking directly at Franco Bellucci’s work, or at clues from his biography, questions of a psychological nature get raised first.

In his case, the illness affecting his central nervous system provoked partial losses of mobility and language and produced a regression to the early childhood stage.

The prison-like enclosure of the asylum and the brutality of its means of restraint did the rest. Among the symptoms of this kind of neurological illness in children who have it,

Winnicott speaks of the “engagement of the individual in this interminable human task that consists of keeping interior reality and exterior reality both separate and tied to one another,” which gives rise to the notion of phenomena and transitional objects.

In a dimension that is suspended in time, Winnicott explains in his book Game and Reality (1971) that the small child explores the frontiers between inside and

Franco’s devotion to putting together objects that we could consider transitional objects is constant, even if the cerebral problem perhaps destroyed the neurological zones where we find the sense of security given by a mother and the transitional object, which opens a potential space for finding oneself, the world, and the other.

From the rediscovery of his childhood toys, to the creations made in recent years, inspired by Bargellini through this game of connections, there is a way of gathering the absences together. Bellucci can express his destructiveness in his creations and thus continue on a perpetual quest for the self.

These toys, assembled thanks to a complex tactile language in which perception of the object and its use are one in the same, allow him to give free reign to his destructive curiosity, to hold opposite forces in tandem in a sort of symbolic restitution.

In an addictive sense, in the way the search for pleasure can be addictive, he displays an irresistible need to touch and modify objects. Transforming toys that his brother gives him, dismantling and reconnecting the very diverse objects offered by Bargellini, he concentrates in isolation with a pleasure provoked by bringing together materials on top of his body. Sitting, but often crouched in a fetal position, in bed or on a park bench,

the heap of objects blends together upon his productive belly. In search of new objects and tools that would allow him to drill through or cut the different materials he prefers, he moves around without ever leaving his constructions, held against his body like dolls.

With the concentration needed for activities that exclude or are totally unconcerned with the presence of another, Bellucci spends hours absorbed in his favorite game: tying objects together, trying to experience new materials and their correspondences.

While the imbroglios of knots and ties of all kinds in his works let us suppose a brutal kind of work, it is surprising to realize that the author works calmly, at the rhythm of an infinite stream of guttural sounds, as if to breathe life into his own toys.

An instinctive defense against anxiety, indispensible for falling asleep, this soft or hard object, mutilated with ferocity and loved with ardor, is the child’s very first instance of possession and creative manipulation.

As an adult in a state of regression, the disinvestment of the traditional object does not lose any of its efficiency. The transitional type of relationship continues even if the real objects are hidden or exchanged with new material offerings. It is in this way that process begins again right away, in an obsessive manner, with the search for new materials. Which leads us to think that the figure of the transitional object is fixed and acquires the characteristics of a fetishized object that comes in as a substitute. An object that will allow him to always remain tied to the denial of a lack and to capture the vital impulses that he had before his illness.

Sometimes, this gesture is almost a challenge to the laws of nature and to the possibilities of extending an object. The virile imposition of force is an aspect that marks his work and that distances him from the gesture of Pascal Tassini, for whom the binding of fabric threads follows a rounded and delicate movement imitating the feminine roundness of spheres.

The active work is begun well beforehand, it is done as it gets done, and as Breton says with respect to fetishes, “they can only be seen during one of the moments of their slow metamorphosis.” In a process of creation and recreation that is syncopated by sound, Bellucci’s gesture co-opts those of African Shamans, whose gestures count more that the objects that they produce.

The three dimensional character of Bellucci’s works invites us to discover them, to go around them, for each viewing angle is a fault-line that continues to exude energy. These indefinite forms do not calm the gaze; their intricateness comes from a liberation of energy through the constraints exerted on the material. Like the shocking images of the effects of earthquakes, we are surprised to see, in the compact and irregular accumulation of debris, another

possible order, a world held together by its inverse.

If creating is also a way of returning to the paths of childhood, Franco’s living conditions predispose him to accomplish acts of unexpected symbolic and creative detours. With the pleasure and the simplicity of a game, they represent and safeguard a weakened self. Like infinite, herculean burdens whose stakes become an incantation, a liberating cry so that the hero of the everyday may manage to transform his destiny. A desperate but triumphant and life-saving vitality.

own, the ensemble, finally reunited, reveals all the power of the contradictions. Then come the epiphany and the stupor for the spectator, for as Blanchard said: everything activates when the contradictions accumulate. Indeed the underlying tension of these objects is such that we could speak of an active work with respect to the passiveness of some art that, despite a touch of artificial convulsion, does not manage to provoke a strong feeling of disarray. Their feverish vitality comes from a process of gestation that is an integral part of the work. The collected work that we have today is only the tip of the iceberg, fascinating and deceptive.

There is, among all human beings, an inextinguishable source of vital energy that allows them to rise above the most difficult constraints put in their path. We know it.

We have forgotten it.

Art Brut artists nevertheless continue to be proof of it, and yet, for us, their admirers, their works are forces of encouragement, beyond subjective and temporary concepts like those of beauty/ugliness. By going beyond the longest eclipses, despite praise or critiques, they continue to release these rays of light. The light that comes from the darkest of nights.
