Dear Seahorse Family, We greet our Second Century with great confidence and enthusiasm. A world of possibilities and opportunities is open to us as we emerge from the pandemic and strengthen our school community, our school life and traditions, and take the lessons of the last year into imagining the future.

It was a hard year and we missed much of the connective tissue that our campus thrives on—but that is in the past. And, there are silver linings in the experience.

Resilience in faculty and staff. Problem solving. Research. Conversation.

Communication. Patience and hope. And, as always, the lives of our students, electric and vigorous, moving forward in spite of obstacles. Our campus rallied and succeeded. Our graduation on May 7 was as beautiful and uplifting as ever—we concluded a difficult year on a note of confidence and celebration.

Meeting challenges is not new to Christchurch. Change is a constant and the lessons of the pandemic will be ongoing. But our determination to return to the community life and interactions that we know and love—and that make Christchurch transformational for our students—is strong.

In these pages, you will see how we navigated the challenge and how our students and faculty rose to the occasion.

You will also see that YOU rose to the occasion, giving to support our programs and people in record-setting ways. The pandemic was a financial challenge in every way imaginable. Nevertheless, we met the challenges and now plan for the second century with confidence that our Christchurch family will continue its faithful support.

In his 21st year as Head of School, Jeb Byers is the longest-serving Head in Christchurch School history. Altogether, Jeb has been at Christchurch for 32 years. He is also a legacy. His father, William Byers, graduated in 1939.

Looking Forward, Looking Back - Christchurch Enters Its Second Century

An Interview with JEB Byers, Head of School

Your time at Christchurch included the last 32 years of the school’s first century, including 21 years as Head of School. We have touched and changed so many areas of our school in those decades. What stands out to you?

The first thing, Huntley, is that you are one of the first people I met at Christchurch and you have been my mentor and friend ever since. You took me under your wing when I didn’t really understand boarding schools or Christchurch. That is just one example of how Christchurch embraces people and helps them become better—even their best. We do it for students, families, and our colleagues.

It’s always about the relationships and the people. Always the people. We have faculty members who served our school for only a year, yet deeply impacted others for the better. And we have faculty and staff who have served for thirty, forty, and more years who continue to change lives for the better every day.

There are people, programs, sports, academic subjects, and times that have come and gone over the years. Our school is always changing to meet the needs of today’s students. But the constant focus on the unique and infinite value of every one of us continues through all the challenges, the successes, and winds of change.

What are you most proud of?

Our people and our students, their success stories. The servant-leadership we see every day in our faculty and staff. The problem solving. The way our people face adversity and challenges with little thought for themselves. Selfless service.

I’m also proud of the innovations in the curriculum over the past fifteen-years—a result of facing hard realities and being determined to set our own course and our own identity—without giving up our traditions and values.

Our Boards are a tremendous asset, and the board and foundation leaders during my tenure have been phenomenal. To a person they put the school first and foremost. No one comes to a meeting with a secret agenda or a pet project. Our board members give time, talent, wisdom, and financial resources so generously. They stick together and don’t splinter into factions. They listen to each other and make decisions together.

And we have been agile, yet faithful to who we are. We have faced a lot of challenges—economic ups and downs; the rise, fall, rise pattern of international enrollment; the fact that boarding schools are not a strong industry in this century; the pandemic; tight budgets, and all the rest.

Sometimes the business side of our school and our industry is tough. But the spirit, the successes, the “all for one and one for all” attitude on our campus; what we accomplish with what we have—miraculous. Just miraculous.

What are the opportunities ahead for Christchurch?

We begin a new century with a school very good at agility and change. Our profile among our fellow schools is excellent—we have implemented the changes in curriculum, approach, and philosophy that we envisioned fifteen years ago. We truly put student experience and true learning ahead of everything else. The faculty are amazing and they live into our mission every day. No one is “dialing it in.” Whatever challenges this century brings our way, I know that our DNA for meeting those challenges is baked in—we are very strong, resilient, and we live with a growth-mindset. Our administrative and academic leaders have taken our “practice of the craft” to whole new levels in the last decade. The way we adapted to COVID is proof positive that we can do anything we put our minds to; and that if we continue to put student’s well-being and positive relationships first, great outcomes will result.

We must continue to build our financial strength, our endowment and reserves, and our ability to weather the next pandemic, market downturn, or industry shift. We invest a great deal in getting excellent students to our campus no matter what their ability to pay—students who will go from here to even greater things. That’s important to us. This student body reflects the entire world, and the future where people reach across boundaries and make change for the good. We are not in a facilities race to have the biggest gym or the snappiest theatre, or even concierge service for the dorms. We want our beautiful campus to always be welcoming, safe, and appealing, but we are not about square feet of gold-plated space. We invest in people and programs that change lives. We must take care of our faculty and staff, too. They are committing their lives to Christchurch in many cases and they deserve it.

The CCS Experience: Is there a Christchurch experience that you really treasure?

My favorite moments are when the whole community is together—doing something together, and everyone is comfortable enough to forget themselves for a minute and soak in the fact that we are one little family—sometime “fractious” as Mr. Styron once wrote—but still a family.

Chapel is important, it’s magical no matter what. The Chapel is full, we are all there; sometimes we are singing well and sometimes not. Sometimes the choir or a solo simply takes our breath away and we see our friends with new eyes. Sometimes the sermon is a heavy message that the community needs; or it is healing; or reflective—whether from the Chaplain or a faculty member. Special services are unifying, often joyful.

The occasional favorite-hymn sing along is hilarious. Senior speech presentations are many times revelatory and awe inspiring.

Then there’s assembly—again, when we are all together. And everyone is comfortable enough in their own skin to be themselves. This leads to a lot of hilarity. The timid and the bold, often in pairs, at the microphone, announcing this activity or that; or what to wear for a basketball game; 4 | FALL 2021

or the adventure trip for the weekend—personalities shining through, sometimes peeking through—and the community literally showering love on each other. More magic.

Being on the sidelines with our teams is always uplifting. Big games, everyday games, games that only your mom and dad will attend-they are all so much fun. There you are among friends, cheering for people you care about, talking endlessly about this and that, getting to know people, making connections. And the championships and playoffs— electric, fun, community building, unifying—just another part of the glue that makes communities stick together.

Traditions: What school traditions do you value most?

I love our “speaking tradition,” which means that when you pass someone, or a group on people on campus, you say hello. You call them by name if you know them. You comment on their next game if it’s a group from a certain team. You do this with adults, with students, with faculty children, and with visitors. You say hello, how are you; how did the game go yesterday; did you get the message from your dad; how’s the recovery from your knee surgery; I heard there were storms in your hometown, is everyone OK. That is glue.

Ringing the bell after away victories and, for the graduates, at graduation. Aside from a team literally breaking the bell on a cold fall evening a few years ago, this is a wonderful tradition. The sight of a young team racing across the lawn in the dark to ring the bell “as a team” for the first time—their first win—and hearing the shouts of glee is pure music.

And graduation—watching each senior ring the bell on their own and then process into the arms of the entire faculty—that unique, bittersweet achievement, celebration, sending off and beginning anew. I could watch that a thousand times and it would never get tiring.

Ethos: What is the core attitude or ethos of our school?

We have our mission. Our core values. Our identity statement. Our aspirations for every student. Our educational philosophy. We really work hard to live up to and live into these. They are important.

But to sum it up, we try to live “All for one and one for all.” There’s a lot of power in those words. At the start of every year, I remind our students and faculty that if we all give a little of ourselves to the upbuilding of the community, we will all gain far more than we contribute. Exponentially more.

We always have a partner to solve problems with and, in fact, we don’t do anything alone. My first week at CCS in 1989, you, Huntley, came to me on the sidewalk where I was walking alone and said, “where are you going?” I said, “I’m going to lunch”. And you said, “Nobody goes to lunch alone, or anywhere else alone, at Christchurch. Let’s go together.” Right there, Huntley, I knew I had found my home, a very special place that will always be in my heart. I can’t remember a time in my decades here when I couldn’t think of someone to call for advice or help.

Legacy: What would you like your legacy to be?

Well, it’s not my legacy. It’s the legacy of our decades of joint stewardship of Christchurch School—all of us who have passed through here—students, faculty, staff, families, friends, and been a part of the community and family. Who have contributed to the ethos of our place and our people. Have we met the test of offering a top-tier program; bringing on board superb professionals in their fields; creating an inclusive and well-functioning community; and creating a sustainable business model—despite the built-in complications in all of these?

Each generation of community members stewards the school for a time—we are stewarding a place, an experience, and a community that is always changing. But we must remember that the effects we have on one another and the community—are long lasting, sometimes permanent. So, we must steward with extraordinary care and thought.

The Future: What is your dream for Christchurch?

We have raised our recognition and admiration among peer schools.

We are seen as leading in many ways with respect to program, the integration of the whole experience; the approach to teaching and learning; to professional growth; to being intentional about what we are doing. We must be sure to continue in that direction and become better known in the universe of schools generally. We want the world to discover this hidden gem of a place.

There is a prayer in our prayer book that beseeches God for “an unending stream of benefactors” for the school. The generosity of our donors near and far is now and will always be consequential to Christchurch. We are a tiny school. There are not so many of us who have passed through these doors and across these lawns. So, we all must do our part—we must all give every year; we must give as much as we can when there are special projects and campaigns that need to succeed; we should all list CCS in our estate plans; and we should encourage our friends with children—year in and year out-- to look at CCS for their children. Altogether, we can succeed.

We must have a vibrant and proud alumni/ae body of ambassadors and messengers for the school. I feel that growing every day. And the success stories of our alums are remarkable. There are no stereotypes—our alums are doing so many interesting, innovative, entrepreneurial things in all walks of life. They are making their communities better. They are involved in creating and serving communities. They are building businesses and creating success and opportunities for others. They are the proof of what we do every day. We want them to feel like “shouting it to the rooftops”—I got my start at Christchurch; let me tell you my story.

2012 – Coed boarding begins

Ever-increasing recognition and care for faculty and staff is essential to our future. Anything we can do to retain, grow, recognize, and reward our faculty and staff—we should strive to do. As I said before, we invest in people above competing for square feet of gold-plated facility space. For our faculty and staff, we must redouble our efforts to invest in them because in them is the magic of our place.

A sustaining endowment is the dream of every non-profit. To have such an endowment that the budget is seldom stressed, there is always a rainy-day fund, and something handy for a special project or a worthy cause. Endowments make the future possible. That is why our estate or planned gifts have so much importance. If we all commit 10% or more of our estates to Christchurch, together we can create a sustaining endowment and assure the future of this wonderful place.

Any Last Thoughts?

It has been my high honor and the privilege of my life to serve and lead Christchurch. I have omitted particular names and stories in our conversation, Huntley, because there are too many to mention and I’d feel terrible if I left someone out. One of my jobs this year is to try to adequately thank the people who have been my colleagues, partners, and friends on this life journey. But one person I do want to mention is Lexi Byers, who stepped away from a successful career of one kind to be my partner in the work of Christchurch School. She has made this long tenure possible by her constancy and care and a million good ideas and suggestions along the way. My colleagues and companions at Christchurch have always made me better, and Lexi is certainly the first of these. I treasure every one of you with a thankful heart.

SUCCEEDING AGAINST THE ODDS

Christchurch has always been able to deftly pivot and skillfully maneuver new challenges and situations quickly, skillfully, and gracefully. All this while still maintaining the traditions, core values and community aspirations that have always provided the glue for the Blessed Community, as Mr. Byers fondly refers to the entire Seahorse family.

This same deftness, skill, and grace was on full display the summer leading into the 2020-21 academic year. During this time, in lightning-fast time, faculty learned and integrated myriad new software, programs, and technology while also designing multiple approaches to delivering academic instruction to students in drastically different circumstances.

At the same time, all CCS employees moved at a brisk clip preparing for the 2020-21 school year so as to ensure 1) the safest experience possible for all involved, 2) the best and most positive experience possible (academic and otherwise) for all students and families, and 3) sufficient resources on-site 24/7 for the marked uptick in social and emotional issues facing all students across the nation, and now even more so with the havoc the pandemic has wrought on students and parents of all ages and stations in life across the world.

Suffice it to say, the Seahorse family rose to the occasion and succeeded against the odds!

Using a hybrid approach to education, Christchurch was able to academically best serve all of their students – day, boarding, and those around the world who could not travel to campus. The school utilized creativity, innovation, technology, and COVID-safe in-person activities/events to best deliver the whole Christchurch experience. Athletics and co-curriculars continued, albeit in a pre-vaccine modified form without competitions until the spring season when, because of the availability of vaccines and other factors, competitions resumed (check out how we did in our 2020-21 Athletics and Co-Curriculars article).

The cost to achieve this was steep as the school’s overhead expenses expanded significantly. Fortunately, our extended Seahorse family also rose to the occasion with their loyalty and generosity – giving their time and experience, referring new families, and making generous gifts to the school to help offset these new costs.

From teachers to staff to students to parents to alumni and all other members of the Blessed Community, this past year truly was “all for one and one for all.”

The school also had a banner year for mid-year student enrollments! A total of 16 new Seahorses joined us over the course of the year. New friendships and bonds were forged, teams were filled out further, and new voices joined the laughter and joy echoing around the campus.

Now, for the 2021-22 academic year, with the majority of all students and Christchurch employees vaccinated and both regional and national cases on the decline, Christchurch is returning to normal the best that it can while keeping its sights on what it does best: (1) Meeting each student and family where they are; (2) Helping to inspire and guide each student’s unique journey to selfconfidence, purpose, and identity; and Science Department Chair Mike Carey.

(3) providing a caring and structured community where each student discovers their infinite value while developing the skills to become compassionate, successful, and engaged global citizens.

The school’s Admission Office has also been burning the midnight oil, working tirelessly to further grow the school’s enrollment back to peak numbers. So far, the return on all of this effort has been tremendous with expansions evident across all segments of the student body.

It seems appropriate, then, to wrap up this article with both a reminder, a plea, and gratitude. First, a reminder – the BEST gift you can give the school is a new student. For a school that mustered every ounce of courage and creativity to successfully weather a once-in-a-century pandemic in its very own centennial year, a celebration of the Class of 2021 and a return to beloved graduation traditions brought great joy.

The morning of May 7 dawned much like 100 years of commencement ceremonies have … the school seal hung on the door of the Head’s Residence, rows of chairs stood at attention on Bell Tower Lawn, and the view to the river swept gloriously past the tennis courts and down the length of Nunn Field.

After a “virtual” graduation in 2020, it was the little things, the return to “normalcy,” the tried and true traditions and attention to detail that made the day so special ... the white dresses, the boutonnieres, the pomp and circumstance, the joyful families gathered under the gracious, shading branches of the great red oak, the encouraging words of Mr. Byers, the inspiring words of Valedictorian Maggie Mathews, the ringing of the bell, the congratulations from faculty, the hugs, the photos, the packing of cars, the honking of horns, the teary goodbyes, and then the great quiet that settles peacefully over a job well done.

The Centennial graduates rose to the occasion as no others could. The Class of 2021 included 58 seniors from twelve states, and eight countries. There were six legacies, six all-state athletes, an American Idol contender, writers, mathematicians, student leaders, two state champion swimmers, artists, vocalists, performers, change makers, a Progress Award winner, a Chaplain’s Award winner, and, for the first time in 100 years, two Bishop’s Award recipients.

EXCERPTS FROM MR. BYERS’ ADDRESS TO THE CLASS OF 2021 “Does it make you special to be the 100th? To us it does, but if we want the world to notice, you as a class have to change the world so triumphantly that the whole world has to ask, ‘where did they come from?’

After all, we have been strong enough, resilient enough, and confident enough to weather the great depression, World War II, Vietnam, 9/11, the Great Recession, national calamities, world crises, and all manner of hurricanes and storms, an evacuation, and even a twister and an earthquake.

And now YOU … WE … have weathered a pandemic, a plague. A once-in-a-century horror, here in our 100th year. And yet here we are, together as one. We are surely one scrappy, resilient, tough, grind-it-out bunch of people. Some days felt pretty bleak … anxiety lay heavy on us … there was fear and despair.

But … we continued to see and find a light, a way forward, and remember the reasons why we were here.

As the Gospel lesson says in our Lessons & Carols service: “The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Hallelujah! It seems some sort of miracle to regroup, battered but unbowed on this magical spot, to embrace a moment of joy. We carry on in spite of obstacles, because we believe in what we do, and why we do it, and how we do it.

And that is to focus on you; all of you; the whole you. Because you are unique. You are valuable. Power comes from believing in yourself and with that power comes the responsibility to others. If you take away that same core belief in your own worth and, at the same time, commit yourself to making the world better, then we all win, we’re all better.

Thank you for being the ones who closed out our first one hundred years with such resolve, so much grit, bravely adapting to challenges that none of us could have even imagined. You have truly earned this moment.

And from here, we do want your lives to be so meaningful, rich, and productive that indeed people will ask: ‘where did you come from?’ Godspeed, Class of 2021!”

LEADERSHIP IS ACTIVE

For more than one hundred years, Christchurch School has benefited from strong leadership. Sixteen heads of school have steered Christchurch through testing times - economic growth and decline, global upheaval, social change, war, political tension. These individuals have kept the institution moving forward and maintained a lasting commitment to our founding mission of creating “high character, pure and healthy bodies, well-furnished minds, and the spirit of unselfish service.” We remain eternally grateful for their role in making us who we are today.

While we celebrate the legacy of our titled leaders, our community also recognizes the value of its core values and the many ways they guide us. We know that curiosity, acceptance, integrity, respect, kindness, and selfconfidence are what will carry us into our second century and understand that these standards require constant attention - one does not simply become accepting or curious or kind and then move on. With this in mind, we use these values to define active leadership opportunities, programs, and responsibilities within our school.

Based on this active approach, we seek to provide students with the opportunity to grow through experiences and to use them as a means of gaining and mastering critical leadership skills. We see titled student leadership positions as both a recognition of leadership ability and a means of helping a student understand and then work towards leadership potential. Similarly, the positions we pursue embody the values at the core of our community. For the 2021-22 school year, the entire school came together and agreed to the following positions:

For our students, this will mean new opportunities to contribute and grow. For our faculty, it will mean chances to contribute to and benefit from our unique programs.

We are excited to highlight the following examples of how we are seizing the moment: Elsie Delva is helping our entire community better understand and live up to the essential goals of her titled position - Diversity, Equity, and Belonging. Elsie has been instrumental in keeping our community together and rooted in common ideas as we have navigated divisive political, social, economic, and pandemic-related moments in world history. She is pioneering new initiatives that will strengthen our residential life programs, enhance our community’s perspectives and understandings, better equip students for navigating difficult conversations and situations, and broadly translate our founding mission for our current realities.

Melissa Taylor

Melissa Taylor is bringing her extensive expertise to a new role as Dean of Residential Life and Community Activities. Melissa’s background in school counseling and as a longtime member of the Learning Skills Program will greatly enhance the impact of our residential life program. In collaboration with hall leaders, student leaders, the rest of the community life team, and the community as a whole, Melissa is sure to establish new standards for a successful, healthy, and robust approach to living and learning together.

Johan Johnson joins Christchurch School at this pivotal moment in its history to fill another new role in the Community Life Office - the joint position of Chaplain and Dean of Community Life. Johan will reinvigorate our school’s commitment to its core values and the Episcopal traditions that underpin them. He will look to connect the Episcopal life of the school with the many areas that fall under the umbrella of community life work.

Johan’s student-first approach will no doubt mean that our students directly benefit from his knowledge of and love for the Episcopal Church and his belief in the mission of our school.

Finally, we are excited to profile the first-ever female Board Chair, Lynne Tatum Little.

Lynne served as President of the Parent Council in 2013-14 and joined the Board of Governors soon after the graduation of son Carter Little ’14. After serving as Vice-Chair 2017-20, the Governors elected Lynne as Board Chair in 2020. Lynne is active on many boards, both corporate and non-profit, and is active in the Episcopal Church in Charlotte, NC, her home base with husband Nevan Little. Lynne is vigorously advancing our Setting the Course for the Next 100 Years campaign; working on the next Strategic Plan; and was active in the search for our next Head of School.

2020-21 ATHLETICS AND CO-CURRICULARS

That old Seahorse magic and resilience It was the feel-good winter and spring that we needed after a year of pandemic-related changes and disappointments.

All Seahorse sports and activities were cancelled in spring and fall of 2020. The Big Y, Yarbrough Gymnasium, was deafeningly quiet as the 20-21 basketball season also succumbed to COVID. Marston Hall, too, was hushed, with no possibility for the live theatre extravaganza that we all look forward to each year.

Brendan Cole ’13, Director of Athletics and Co-Curriculars, and Will Wessinger ’04, Athletic Trainer, teamed up with activity leaders and coaches to skillfully navigate safety protocols in order to execute seasons that were safe and as much fun as possible.

Re-imagination was the name of the game for Visual and Performing Arts Director Mark Parsons, as he and his colleagues completely re-tooled the production co-curricular, bringing us one hundred years of Christchurch history in pre-recorded music and song. A student writing team researched the school’s history, combed through decades of archival photos and interviewed alumni, including Dr. Walter “Watt” Shields Sr. ’40, our oldest living Seahorse. Students and alumni came together virtually from all corners of the world to perform, synchronize, film, and edit. A virtual alumni choir is a highlight of the video. Did you miss it? The Virginia Independent School Athletic Association (VISAA) swim officials brilliantly salvaged the winter season with a virtual championship in which swimmers competed at their home pools with “Proof of Time” verified submissions. The Seahorses, coached

by Dave Cola, won the 2021 VISAA Division II State Championship. Senior sensation Javier Sobreviela (Playa del Carmen, Mexico) was named All-State MVP. The team won the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Free Relay, placing fourth in the state overall. Coach Cola and the swimmers started the season in late summer/early fall with COVID-safe sunrise swims in the Rappahannock River before transitioning to the Kilmarnock YMCA in winter.

That championship spirit propelled the Seahorses into spring, with a live season that brought joy to participants and fans alike. It was no easy feat. The grit, desire, and discipline necessary to build a winning team was matched with careful COVID protocols and procedures.

Coach Matt Schaefer and the girls soccer team, absent a year, rallied with talent and spirit nonpareil to finish their season ranked #3 in VISAA Division II. They were proud to host the division quarterfinals at Nunn Field, but lost in a nailbiter determined by penalty kicks.

Taylor Berry ’22 (Urbanna, VA) and Faith Hattersley ’21 (Wicomico Church, VA) earned First Team All-State Honors, and Majesty Wilson ’22 (Sandys, Bermuda) made the Second Team.

The lacrosse team faced an incredibly difficult schedule, playing Division I teams well into the second half of the season. They powered through with determination and a will to improve, cruising to the end of the season ranked #1 in their own Division II. With incredible momentum, they plowed through the quarter and semifinals to proudly stake their claim as hosts of the State Championship game on Dischinger Field. The game was open to visitors with masks, and #SeahorsePride was evident with a terrific showing of alumni support The championship was not meant to be, however, and the Seahorses graciously accepted their place as State Runners Up. William Thompson (Richmond, VA), Brandan Bowers ’21 (Yorktown, VA), DJ Batton ’21 (Apex, NC), and Jaxon Gill ’22 (Ontario, Canada) earned All-State First Team honors. Kris Barnum ’22 (Gloucester, VA), Luc Danis ’22 (Cambridge, Canada), and Joel Lindner (Louisa, VA) earned Second Team honors. Gavin Lindner ’22 (Louisa, VA) was named USA Academic All-American. Coach John Dehm was in his 8th season at the helm of the program, assisted by Coach Mitch MacDonald ’13.

Legacy and team captain Pierce Lambert ’22 (son of Robin Fleet Lambert ’94) tied for third place in the VISAA Division II Golf Championship at Williamsburg National Golf Club, earning All-State recognition.

The Christchurch Sailing team continued its strong tradition of excellence, training throughout the year and launching the Jack Dozier ’65 Fleet from Clyde V. Kelly IV Sailing Pavilion under strict, COVID-safe protocols and under the watchful eye of National Championship Coach Kieran O’Connell. Our Seahorses won the Virginia Interscholastic Sailing Association (VISA) Team Racing Championship and traveled to Miami, FL to compete in the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) National Team Racing Championship, finishing 4th in the nation. Carlos Bermudez de Castro ’22 (La Coruna, Spain) was named All-VISA Skipper, Emilie Janzen ’22 (Atlanta, GA) was named All-VISA Crew and All-VISA Girls Team Crew, and Marina Dryer ’22 (Towson, MD) was named All-VISA Girls Crew.

Several 2021 graduates take their talents to college this year, including Cindy Wang (sailing, Tufts University), Reese Bragg (sailing, Dartmouth University) DJ Batton (lacrosse, Boston University), and DJ Sims (football, Virginia Tech). According to the Washington Post, defensive back Haley Van Voorhis (football, Shenandoah University) is the first woman to play a position other than punter or kicker on an NCAA team.

2020-21 ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS Bobby Lippincott ’10 Bobby Lippincott was named Sail1Design’s Coach-of-the-Year in recognition of his work with junior Opti sailors.

Abby Blankenship ’17 Abby was named Centennial Conference Lacrosse Player of the Week after she led the McDaniel College Green Terror in its win over Muhlenberg College with four goals and an assist.

Santiago Meneses ’17 Santi played an important role in the University of Lynchburg’s run in the NCAA Division III baseball tournament. In the team’s semifinal loss, Santi was a bright spot, pitching four no-hit innings, a strike-out, and allowing just one walk.

Steven Stilianos ’18 Steven, a Lafayette College junior tight end, won Offensive MVP Honors and was named to the All-Patriot League First Team. In July, HERO Sports ranked Steve #20 in the nation for FCS tight ends, and this fall he was named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team.

John Mahaney ’18 John won first place in the javelin throw at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship. He is on the Track and Field Team at Earlham College.

Mariana Guzman ’19 Mariana qualified to represent Mexico in the women’s radial laser sailing class at the first Junior Pan American Games to be held in Cali, Columbia.

Jaylyn Kreimes ’18 Jaylyn, an Emory and Henry DB, was named to the All-ODAC First Team for Defense and was named State Defensive Back-of-theYear by the Touchdown Club of Richmond.

Erik DeMario ’18 Erik’s VCU a cappella group, the Ramifications, won Varsity Vocals’ International Championship of College A Capella Mid-Atlantic Semi-Finals, qualifying them to compete in the world finals!

One hundred years ago, The Virginia Churchman (the diocesan periodical) described the new school’s athletes, “they show the qualities which it is hoped will always characterize the school throughout its career – undaunted courage and true sportsmanship.” A century later, Christchurch School has grown and changed in so many marvelous ways. But some things have wonderfully stayed the same … no one could deny the undaunted courage and true sportsmanship the Seahorses displayed this year in powering through the hardships of COVID to emerge … victorious.

PHILANTHROPIC LEGACIES & THE MAKING OF CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOL

by Wes Charlton ’01 Christchurch School has a long and rich history of philanthropic support from its alumni, past parents, friends of the school, foundations, and others who believe in the school’s mission. Without this robust legacy of giving back, we would not have the school that we all know and love.

With this in mind, we will be focusing on Seahorse philanthropy and its role in the making of Christchurch in this and future Christchurch Today editions.

Here, we start with the Lewis B. Puller Jr. ’63 Marine & Environmental Science Center and the Worth Higgins ’54 Scholarship, Est. 2003.

Lewis B. Puller Jr. ’63 Marine & Environmental Science Center Built in 2010, the Lewis B. Puller Jr. ’63 Marine & Environmental Science Center is the newest building on the Christchurch campus (not counting the four new faculty houses). This building was part of the Being Great Campaign and is only the second CCS building named after an alumnus. Moreover, it was an alum’s generous gift that made this award-winning LEED certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) science center a reality.

In 2007, the school’s Join Us Capital Campaign was well underway, and a new campus master plan was in the making. The Trustees and Governors of the school chose to prioritize an academic center as a visible sign of our commitment to advanced curriculum design and the use of the Rappahannock River as a part of our identity. After several design reviews, the Boards settled on the current “looking forward while honoring the past” design.

The resulting LEED-certified building, completed in 2010, which garnered two design awards for the architects, was dedicated as the Lewis B. Puller Jr. ’63 Marine & Environmental Science Center. The words “Puller Center” are etched into the stone frontispiece and a biography of Lewis Puller greets visitors just inside the main entrance. It is also the only building on campus named for an alumnus. This happened because a Christchurch alumnus and close friend of Puller wanted to honor his fellow alumnus and felt deeply about the cause. This alumnus believed that Puller’s remarkable life story of grit, heroism, adversity, and grace, deserved to be illuminated for future Seahorses to know and understand. This alumnus and patron of the school completed the funding of the new science center with a challenge gift of $1,000,000 to secure the Puller name for our new academic building.

Worth Higgins ’54 Scholarship, Est. 2003 In the early 1990s, before becoming our current Head of School, Jeb Byers took a new position at CCS working in the Alumni Relations office under the mentorship of Cliff Asbury ’70 and alongside Jennifer Homer who had recently joined the office as a Communications associate.

CCS Alumnus E. Worth Higgins ’54 had by this time established a highly regarded printing firm in Richmond, Virginia. His company won many awards for museum catalogues and fine-art publications, as well as printing of all kinds. He was also a grateful Seahorse alum who loved his days at Christchurch, leading him to own a home and sailboat near the school for most of his adult life while regularly attending CCS Alumni Reunions with his wife, Kay. At his printing company, Higgins took Byers and Homer under his wing, helping them to learn the finer points of printing, color, type, and design. For several decades, the Worth Higgins team took special care of the CCS Alumni Relations team whenever a print piece was being prepared for our Seahorse alumni, families, and friends. This wonderful relationship continues to this day.

In 2003 Mr. Higgins prepared for his retirement by structuring a plan for his employees to purchase his company. His wife, Kay, worked behind the scenes with the company’s senior employee and soon-to-be CEO, Rick Lareau, to add something special to the sale of the company. This resulted in the employees of Worth Higgins Printing creating a CCS need-based scholarship in Worth’s honor when the transfer of the company to the employees was completed.

With this scholarship fund, Worth’s legacy is ensured permanently at Christchurch through the generosity of his employees, who now own and continue to operate the Worth Higgins Company.

Leaving a Legacy Christchurch’s first 100 years are filled with stories like these. We look forward to sharing more as we continue to venture forward into our Second Century, while continuing to establish new legacies through the continued support and creativity of our beloved Seahorse Community.

Setting The Course For

FACULTY HOUSING

As all Seahorses know, most of the Christchurch faculty and staff have chosen not only to teach at the river, but to also call it home.

Seventy-five percent of faculty and staff live on campus while also sharing meals, coaching sports teams, leading co-curricular activities, and generally building connections and relationships between and with their students that extend well beyond the classroom.

With the last faculty housing project now many decades in the past, the school recognized that faculty housing was a critical need that could not wait. This then led to Christchurch breaking ground in November 2018 and constructing its first new faculty housing on campus in decades. The return on this investment has been immediate – as of fall 2020 four faculty families now live in four new, well-appointed homes in a new faculty village on campus across from Nunn Soccer Field.

One faculty family shares, We really love our community in our village cul-de-sac (with 9 kids and 3 dogs!). Our kitchen really makes the house a home because it overlooks most of the general living area and we are able to engage with our family while also preparing meals or getting ready for our days.

Another shares that Our new, modern house makes us feel appreciated by the CCS community. Here we say that we are family, and that feels even more true now that we live on campus.

Still yet another shares The design and finishes of our home showcase the progression and forward-thinking mindset of the school. They demonstrate that even after 100 years CCS is still constantly evolving and reshaping the inclusivity of both employees and their families.

And not to be left out, the fourth family shares We love the location, setup, and community this new village brings. Having a newly built house is really nice and we particularly enjoy the outside screened-in-porch and open plan living spaces inside. Also, having the space available outside to grow a garden has been wonderful.

Each alum remembers that one (or more) teacher, coach, advisor, dorm parent, or whoever, at Christchurch, who helped transform their lives for the better. As Mr. E. Carlton Wilton Jr. ’70 says “Christchurch faculty changed my life and countless others for the better.

Attracting and keeping the best faculty is essential to the future of the school. This starts with giving them the best possible place to call home.”

PLANNED GIVING SPOTLIGHT

I owe a lot to Christchurch School (CCS) for setting me on the right course for the future.

Not only did it open many doors, which in turn unlocked myriad opportunities for me, but the faculty and staff also became my extended family.

Since graduating from Christchurch, I have continued to be an active alumnus on campus, speaking with CCS students about my time and experiences as a student there, as well as my experiences as a professional in higher education. I make it a point to try and work with current Seahorse students by providing as much information to them as possible about the college admission application process, with the goal of hopefully helping to make each of their individual experiences as unintimidating as possible.

I am also honored that I have been afforded the chance to give back as a member of both the CCS Alumni Council (previously), and currently as a member of the school’s Board of Governors. Being able to serve in this way allows me to give back what CCS gave me.

Also, because I love CCS and care about its future sustainability and well-being, I have been a giver to the school’s annual fund, The Bell Tower Fund, for several years. This year, I will also be designating a planned gift to the school.

It is more important now than ever before to ensure the stability and sustainability of Christchurch School for the next 100 years. Gifts to the school’s annual fund, The Bell Tower Fund, are essential for the school to continue to operate, as annual giving accounts for at least 20% of the school’s operating budget. These annual fund gifts also help Christchurch continue to build on the diversity of both faculty/staff and the student body. And of course, they directly support the continuation of the school’s excellent, rigorous, and innovative education that it is known for.

I encourage you all to reflect on what your Christchurch experience, education, and relationships have all meant to you and your family since, and then I encourage you to join me in giving back to our alma mater.

PLANNED GIVING SPOTLIGHT

At our Varsity Athletic Banquet our guest speaker Ray Spence (former Bayou Tiger, LSU) said it’s “behind the eyes, between the ears, and within the heart” that determines one’s true varsity letter. Fortunately for those in the Class of 1965, and I firmly believe for all those CCS students past and present, Christchurch has nurtured the academic skills, the personal values, and the religious core to navigate an ever-changing, complex world. For me, Christchurch took a poorly prepared, under-motivated, unpolished student out of West Virginia and inculcated all those intangibles “behind the eyes, between the ears, and within the heart” to lead a successful, purposeful life serving others. Certainly, why wouldn’t I, and all those who have received Christchurch’s special gifts, want to pass on the core values that have guided our lives since those days on the river? And what better way to ensure our zeal in what Christchurch has given us than to place Christchurch in our will ... the gift that keeps on giving in perpetuity!

SEAHORSES THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE! Christchurch School is proud of its roll call of alumni, faculty, and staff who have courageously served in the American Armed Forces. In the course of 100 years, Seahorses have served honorably and with distinction in five of the six armed forces: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy, as well as the two nonmilitary uniformed services - the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Corps. In 2010, a memorial honoring Seahorses for their service was erected at the flagpole on Bell Tower Hill.

The school actively maintains a list of those who served and those who currently serve and invites alumni and family members to contact our Associate Director of Development, Huntley Galleher, with additions at hgalleher@ christchurchschool.org.
