Table of Contents Dear Seahorse Family, The start of Christchurch School’s 103rd year began in the fall, and the excitement around campus has never been greater. Enrollments continue to remain strong, as we have welcomed over 90 new students to campus. Last year, we ended with the highest female enrollment in school history, and we are on track to keep that same pace this year.

MISSION STATMENT Christchurch inspires and guides each student’s unique journey to self-confidence, purpose, and identity.

Within a caring, structured community, students discover their infinite value and develop the skills to become compassionate, successful, and engaged global citizens.

Our Athletic and Co-curricular programs look to build off of the success of three state championships last year, as well as the addition of a new 8-man football team, girls softball, and the return of our competitive tennis program.

IDENTITY STATEMENT At Christchurch School, we combine more than 100 years of tradition, community, and relationships with a dynamic and innovative approach to learning that meets each child where they are and prepares them to succeed in a rapidly changing world.

Our academic program has partnered with Virginia Wesleyan University to offer dual enrollment in eight of our upper-class honors courses across all major academic departments. This resulted in over 450 college credit hours being earned by CCS students last year, and it will result in over 500 credit hours this year.

DISTINGUISHED STAFF PROFILE Connie has supported seven Heads of School in her years, including Jeb Byers, the longest serving Head in the School’s history. He said of Connie, “The Head of School is often the last to leave the office on an average day, but that Head almost always said goodnight to Connie Jessie on the way out… she brings a work ethic that is beyond compare.

She is serious about the work of the school and she is serious about her faith, lived out in looking out for us.”

Her humility, kindness, and attention to detail led Connie to being an invaluable colleague and a natural mentor for hundreds of faculty and staff members as they gained their footing here on the River. For example, on any given day, Connie would complete the many unseen, and often unrecognized, tasks that keep a school like Christchurch running. Who coordinated substitutes? Who meticulously produced transcripts and computed GPAs? Who knew exactly how many office supplies needed to be ordered to ensure that all would have exactly what they needed?

Who made sure the names on every certificate were spelled correctly and that every award and accolade was documented in perpetuity? It was Connie.

On a Wednesday, one might have seen Connie leaving for lunch with Doris, as the pair remained, and still are, close friends after all these years. A visit to her office would have likely yielded a bag of fresh vegetables, picked from her garden that morning, and maybe even a conversation about her family, who she was and remains proud of, especially her daughter Evelyn ’06.

Connie grew up at, and with, Christchurch School.

Her lived experience provides her and us now with an unmatched personal historical view of the last century on the River.

For nearly five decades, Connie Jessie has been a constant at Christchurch School, as familiar to Seahorses as the white fences, Bishop Brown, and the Bell Tower.

Connie began her storied career at Christchurch on a muggy August day in 1974 when she accepted a job as an administrative assistant. Straight out of high school, Connie was quick to learn on her IBM typewriter as she was mentored by longtime Assistant to the Head of School, Doris Hunt. As anyone connected to Christchurch knows, this beloved community on the Rappahannock River pulled Connie in with the ebb and flow of the tide, where she remained on its shore for the next 49 years.

For many professionals today, it is unimaginable to spend an entire career in one place – another feat our great Connie accomplished. And because of her loyalty and commitment to CCS, Connie ended up working through many historical moments in real time - global, national, regional, and Christchurch-specific. Now retiring after 49 years of service, she can be rest assured that she has made history as the longest serving employee of Christchurch School. We just wish she’d stay one more year!

Christchurch School is beyond grateful for the unmatched service of Connie Jessie. To borrow her favorite farewell – we hope to see you soon, Connie, “God willing and the creek don’t rise.”

ALUMNI PROFILE My parents navigated three teenage girls through high school and didn’t have the energy left to get me to do anything. I got nothing but D’s and F’s. They had me tested because they thought I had a learning disability and the doctor said, “No, he’s just lazy.” My first semester at Christchurch I got all A’s and a B (in math).

4. What are your favorite memories from your time at Christchurch? What are some of the funniest memories you have from when you were here?

Joe Kelly, Class of 1991, shares his personal journey from being the youngest in a family of six to his formative time at Christchurch, and how he went on to find success in television as a comedy writer, creator/developer, and producer. Joe is best known for his work as a writer for Saturday Night Live (SNL), a writer/story editor for How I Met Your Mother, and as a creator/ developer/writer for Ted Lasso. Joe currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Alex, and their two children, Sasha (5) and Bobby (1).

1. Tell us about life before attending Christchurch.

I grew up the baby boy of a family of six. My dad was the funny accountant who played Santa Claus at all the office Christmas parties, my creative mom made all the decorations for our church, and eventually the costumes for all the shows and murder mysteries I did in my teens and twenties. And my cool older sisters pampered and spoiled me from day one. We are a big, close, loving family. I remember laughing a lot at family dinners growing up.

2. Do you remember your earliest memory of realizing you could make people laugh and that you had a gift with comedy?

When I was 12 or so, I remember making my dad’s friend laugh one day and he kept telling everybody what I said. I remember being super proud of that, more so than any other compliments I got. Or maybe I never got any other compliments. Either way, I remember chasing that feeling. And I always loved writing. I was always writing something. At some point in early high school I wrote out a Cheers episode on a typewriter. I still remember what it was about. I had no concept that I could grow up and do it for a living, I just enjoyed doing it.

3. What brought you to Christchurch?

I wish there was a way to calculate how much time I spent playing basketball in Yarbrough Gym. I lived in there. By no means did I excel, but it was always fun.

Those pickup games with guys from all over the country are what I remember most. When my parents came to pick me up after graduation, I had them park outside while I ran in and sank one last shot.

5. Did any Christchurch faculty, coaches, advisors, hall parents, etc. have a positive impact on you?

Three teachers jump out at me, with apologies to all the rest of my wonderful teachers and coaches.

Ms. Adkins, my advisor. I was very close to her and our entire advisory. It was so overwhelming to be away from home that first year, going from a house full of loving older sisters to a dorm full of raging teenage boys and I couldn’t have done it without her maternal support and occasional kicks in the butt.

Mr. Powell, my history teacher, who I remember as a person who really challenged me, and was always debating with me. I loved arguing with Mr. Powell

and it wasn’t until years later I realized he was right about everything and, in his way, was leading me to the light without giving me the answers.

Mr. McCracken. English and Journalism.

As a writer, Mr. McCracken influenced my life more than any other teacher I had in my life. After graduation I assumed I’d be a journalist. As a college drop out (sorry everybody) he was pretty much

the last stop for me in formal writing education and I brought a lot of his lessons to my career. And there’s a lot of his journalism class, and writing for the school paper, in the character of Trent Crimm on Ted Lasso. I loved writing for Trent and all the reporters on the show.

And in honor of Mr. McCracken, one of the player lockers in the Richmond locker room for seasons one and two read “McCracken.”

6. Was there anything that you did at Christchurch, or students and faculty/staff, that influenced or inspired you in regards to comedy and/or your current professional work?

My first writing gig ever was at Christchurch when my friend, our class president, asked me to ghost write his remarks for the graduation dinner. I remember it being super cool sitting there while someone else read my words. I still have not been paid.

7. Tell us about your life after Christchurch - what came next?

I was hellbent on going to the University of Georgia, which just wasn’t the school for me. Everyone told me to go to a smaller school. I don’t know if it would have made a difference, but I certainly just disappeared at UGA. Much like my educational experience before CCS, I just wasn’t engaged, not going to classes. When my parents confronted me about it and asked me what I wanted to do with my life I said, “Comedy.” And God bless them, they supported that. I tried stand-up, which I didn’t love, and then I found Improvisational Comedy, which I did.

I never imagined what would come from it. I just put everything I had into it at the time.

I did “short form” improv for a few years in Atlanta, then after seeing a Second City show in Chicago, I knew I had to do that. Within the year I had moved to Chicago to study at Second City and Improv Olympic, which led to getting hired by Boom Chicago in Amsterdam, which really changed my life.

All that time I was always writing one thing or another. Boom Chicago led to being hired by Second City in Las Vegas where, as luck would have it, I became roommates with Jason Sudeikis. Which led to being hired by SNL, which opened the doors for everything that came after.

8. Tell us about your family.

I met my wife, Alex, in New York, during my second stint with SNL. It really was love at first sight and we are now in Los

Angeles, married for eight years with two incredibly happy and healthy kids, Sasha (5) and Bobby (1). They all came out to London each season we filmed Ted Lasso which made it a wonderful experience for all of us. If only to hear my daughter refer to a trash can as “the bin.”

9. How did you end up as a writer with Saturday Night Live? Do you have any favorite memories from that time? Do you have a favorite skit or episode you worked on?

My castmate and roommate, Jason Sudeikis, got hired as a writer. He was kind enough to recommend me, I submitted a pack of sketches and got hired the next year. I have fond memories of my first week because I got two sketches on the air: a Harry Potter sketch with Lindsay Lohan and a “lower back tattoo remover” parody commercial. That was easily one of the best weeks of my life. Show night is as fun as you think it is. Writing night was even more fun.

10. What came after Saturday Night Live? How did you end up as a writer and story editor on How I Met Your Mother? Any favorite memories from working on that show? Do you have a favorite episode you worked on?

After SNL, I moved to LA and bounced around for a few years working on shows like Comedy Central Celebrity Roasts and the MTV Movie Awards. My agent also represented the How I Met Your Mother creators and he recommended me to them. They liked the sample “spec” script I wrote for The Office and hired me for season three. Working for a sitcom, in a writers room, was very different from the improv and sketch I had been doing and I learned a ton from Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and the entire writing staff. I also had a blast.

I’d have to say my favorite episode was The Naked Man. I love watching old episodes now, because it brings me back to how much fun we had while making them.

11. How did you meet the other co-creators/developers of Ted Lasso - Bill Lawrence and Brendan Hunt?

I met Brendan Hunt in Amsterdam at Boom Chicago. Jason, Brendan and I have known each other for 22 years.

In 2013, NBC hired Jason to do some promos for their coverage of the Premier League. He reached out to me to help out and since Brendan knew more about Premier League Football than anyone we knew, he came on board to make sure we didn’t screw it up. We had so much fun doing them, got some free trips to London and I saw my first Premier League matches in person, which were incredible experiences. I really thought that was it, just a few days of work and a free trip to London.

Jason was the only one who had the vision for the television show on who the characters from those silly commercials could be. He teamed up with Bill Lawerence who taught us how to make it. Jason, Bill, Brendan and I talked through the broad strokes of what the show would be and every single network in town passed, except for Apple. Thank you, Apple.

favorite character. I loved writing every script I ever wrote for the show and every time I started a new scene, I was excited to write for those next two, three or twenty combinations of characters. I miss them all.

13. Can you share some about your own creative process? Is it more methodical each day like a Hemingway approach, or more “of the moment” when inspiration strikes? How has your creative process changed from the beginning of your professional career to where you are now?

I’m at my best with a deadline. As I sit in the middle of a writers strike, I definitely find it harder to write something now as opposed to back in London when I was working on a scene that was shooting the next morning.

Also, my creative process now is very much being part of a team of writers working together. As a younger writer I worked alone and was very precious about every single word I wrote. I’d like to think I’ve changed and recognize the best line is not always my line.

Working on Ted Lasso also helped loosen me up because most of the characters weren’t American. Every day an actor would say some version of “we don’t say parking lot, we say car park.” My answer was always “say it how you’d say it” and that evolved to cover more than just what to call parking lots, hoodies and elevators. Letting incredibly talented actors make the lines their own freed me from an obsession to get every syllable of every line exactly how I heard it in my head, which was always impossible and ultimately counterproductive.

The Director also brings their own thoughts and ideas to the scenes. The costume department, and set design, bring so much to it that you never thought about. Writing the script really is just the beginning. If it doesn’t change and get better as more people get involved, you’re doing it wrong.

14. What are some of the most important things you’ve learned about working in the entertainment industry? What’s the best advice you’ve received about working in comedy/television etc.?

The thing that jumps out at me was a piece of advice Neil Patrick Harris got as a kid from Steven Bochco, the producer of Doogie Howser, M.D. “This industry is like surfing. You have to get on a surfboard, and paddle and paddle through, and wait a long time hoping you catch a wave. You try and catch them, and miss them, and someone else will catch them and everyone will cheer. Eventually you will catch a wave, and it will be fantastic, and you’ll get all the way to the end... and then the wave will inevitably crash and you’ll have to turn around, and paddle back out, and get hit by waves as you go back out there... and once you get back out there, you’re going to have to sit around for a long time waiting for another wave to come along.”

SNL and How I Met Your Mother were incredible waves. Ted Lasso was like riding a Tsunami. It’s certainly helpful to remember that no career, or life, is one constant wave. There are downtimes. And it’s better to embrace them, and be patient, than to get frustrated.

15. What would you say to a high school student in 2023 who wants to try a career in entertainment, comedy, TV, etc.?

Go out there and live life. Gain experiences. A show hiring a young comedy writer is always going to be more interested in someone with a master's in mathematics than someone who has only done comedy. Do things that are out of your comfort zone.

And most importantly, be part of a creative community. For me, that was improvisational comedy. Laughing Matters in Atlanta.

Second City in Chicago. Boom Chicago in Amsterdam. Pretty much every city in the country has some acting class, or improv troupe, or writing class. And if they don’t, start one. Put in those 10,000 hours working with the best people you can find.

People that inspire you. People that are so much better than you it’s intimidating. Those are the people who will become your best friends, who make you better and, eventually, help you find work.

16. What’s next on the horizon for you?

Hoping and assuming the writers strike will be over at some point, we’ll see if Ted Lasso has any kind of future, because that’s an opportunity I could never pass up. Other than that, I’ll always be looking to work on a show or a movie with an incredibly talented friend or two. That’s been working out for me so far.

12. What have been some of your biggest triumphs, and some of the biggest challenges, with Ted Lasso? Do you have a favorite character?

Winning an Emmy was an incredible feeling and winning again in season two was just silly.

I was not prepared for the show’s success. It has been a wild ride that feels miles beyond my control or comprehension. I honestly can’t pick a Joe Kelly’s Senior Portrait

The Bell Tower Fund, our annual fund giving, is Christchurch School’s top fundraising priority. Each year we ask our past and present families, alumni, past and present faculty/staff, and friends to make a tax-deductible gift that supports the current operations of the school. Michelle recently served as the Director of Development and Director of Major Gifts for the better part of a decade at Saint Gertrude High School and Benedictine Schools of Richmond, where she helped raise over $36 million in less than three years for a comprehensive campaign. Michelle has 20+ years of experience in fundraising, leadership, and alumni engagement, most of that time working at various independent schools.

Michelle was born in Detroit, but has lived most of her life in Richmond, Virginia.

She enjoys traveling, gardening, shopping, watching Notre Dame football, going to local restaurants, and she loves dogs, especially her rescue shih tzu mix.

Michelle is eager to get on the road and meet everyone in the coming months, and she will be happy to connect at all Christchurch gatherings and events in 2024 as well.

INTRODUCING PARENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT ESTHER STITT Christchurch also welcomes a new Parent Council President, Esther Stitt.

Esther and her family are deeply committed to Christchurch that started with the love her husband JP Stitt ’92 developed when he attended the school. Esther was also a boarding school student, and when COVID hit, the Stitt parents quickly realized boarding school would be the best environment for their children, Cole ’24 and Jennianne ’25.

Esther said, “We love the Christchurch community and all it has given our family.

I am so blessed to be able to give back in this new role.” She hopes to use her connection and history with Christchurch to shape the many ways the parent council can support CCS. She looks forward to working with all of our families near and far to create the best possible experiences for our students.

MAJOR GIFT PROFILE

HENRY H. EICHELBERGER ’54

BY HUNTLEY GALLEHER Christchurch donors are committed to various areas of the school that touched their lives in important ways, and they give back with gratitude to support those programs. This is Henry H. Eichelberger’s story.

Born to two old Rockbridge and Rockingham county families in 1935, Henry grew up in Lexington, Virginia. He lost his dad at a young age, though, and when he started to fall behind at his local school, Henry went to stay with his Aunt in Lexington, Kentucky for a better education during his formative years. Then, when it came time for high school, Henry was accepted to Christchurch, where he remained for all four years, absolutely loving it.

While at CCS, Henry became very interested in, and involved with, science, he even went so far as to keep a beehive on campus! During this time on river, one of the CCS science teachers took an interest in Henry and encouraged him to enter a national science fair in Washington DC, which he won! He later entered a second fair and came in second place, admitting that his writing skills were not as good as his science skills.

took him to Aberdeen, Scotland, where Henry served as the Director of Electron Microscopy for several years. During this time, Henry returned to Lexington to visit friends and family, and during this visit he renewed a prior acquaintance with Jeanne Richards, his future wife. They were married in 1977.

While the ensuing years would have many adventures, accomplishments, moves, changes, and challenges, Henry remained committed to his love for biology, never forgetting the small college prep boarding school on the mighty banks of the Rappahannock that first lit the flame of his lifelong passion. It was this motivating force that led Henry to decide that he would give back to Christchurch School by making a planned gift to its endowment to support the Integrated Science Department and related programs, and to assist Seahorse students who have shown an interest in the sciences.

Here, we celebrate Henry, as well as all our planned giving donors. Their passion and generosity continue to positively impact the lives of future Seahorse alumni.

After graduating from Christchurch, Henry attended Tulane University and earnied a B.S. in Biology. He then joined the Army, where he spent several years working on projects in his chosen field of biology in Turkey and Continental Europe.

During this time, many of his commanding officers gave Henry opportunities to expand his experiences in and around science.

Cifuentes turned an incredible page in the Christchurch history book. Because of the dedicated work the school put in ahead of time - intense and measured research, planning, training, and education led by Director of Residential Life Bett Alter and Dean of Students Amanda Gravatt Porter ’93 - we were well-prepared and this significant transition was smoother than anyone had imagined it could be. I loved all of these young women and it was a very special year.”

On the 10th Anniversary of Christchurch School’s Girls Boarding Program, the school boasted its highest female enrollment yet, clocking in at 49% (90 female students).

Filling all three floors of Murrell Dormitory, for many girl boarders, it’s hard to believe that a decade ago the halls weren’t brimming with a population of vibrant young ladies hailing from across the country and the globe.

The school is both excited for, and proud of, the growth in its population of young women, as it is clear this vital group of students contribute deeply to the richness of the CCS program – not to mention many of our recent successes, such as our National Sailing Championship in 2019, would not have been possible without our girl Seahorses!

Serving as a hall leader for these young women has been a great pleasure of my life. To contribute in any way to their development as strong, confident, and kind adults is the most rewarding aspect of my work at Christchurch.

Second Murrell girls spend time with Mrs. Booker

In 1921, Bishop William Cabell Brown and the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia founded Christchurch School on the Eastman Farm, located in Middlesex County. Early on, the school was referred to as “the only country school for boys on Virginia’s salt water.”

It wasn’t until 1975 that Christchurch graduated its first female day student, Deborah Bouis Rhodes of Kilmarnock, Virginia.

When asked about why she chose to attend Christchurch, Deborah replied, “It was scary at first, but I wanted to be here [at Christchurch], to be the first girl and break the ice for the next set of females to come in.”

HALEY ’21 MAKES HISTORY!

Deborah went on to have a great experience at Christchurch, noting that many of her female friends enrolled after Deborah’s first year. “The community is very loving and compassionate. Christchurch is just a good place to be,” she said.

Haley VanVoorhis ’21 became the first woman, nonkicker, to appear in a NCAA football game in the Fall of 2023.

Deborah did indeed break the ice, and Christchurch went on to welcome many girl day students thereafter. And, in an ongoing effort to always try and better reflect the world around it, Christchurch welcomed its first female boarding students in the fall of 2012, graduating its first female legacy boarding student, Betsy Rhoads in 2014.

Haley is a Junior and a safety at Division III Shenandoah University. She is also a member of the track and field team where she is a sprinter.

Jennifer Homer, the first girls dormitory hall leader said “Since the 1970s, our female day students have brought unparalleled brilliance and energy to campus each morning. With the advent of girls boarding, this vitality no longer had to leave at the end of every day. I was honored to be the Hall Parent for these trailblazers when they moved onto Faye Dorm. Sara Brook Davis, Betsy Rhoads, Cherry Cai, Maddie Lightfoot, Helen Fu, Katelyn Boyette, Jocelyn Ding, Samantha Monical, Cristin Archer, Maame Bawuah, Joy Leonard, Serena Zhang, Erin Maloney, Taylor Lockley, Ginger Maguire, Monica Martinez, and Laura

During her time at CCS, Haley played as a wide receiver and a safety, and was a team captain in her Senior year.

When talking with the Washington Post in 2021, Coach Homer said of Haley, “As a coach, there are certain things you’re always looking for, especially when it comes to practice,” Homer said. “They have to be on time; to listen, work hard and check any issues they have at the door. Haley is really good at all of that. She’s always early to practice and usually the last to leave. And she’s working out all the time. She is so strong. If you looked at a picture of her a year ago, you probably wouldn’t recognize her.”

ATHLETIC HIGHLIGHTS 2022-23 The second century bell was in full motion this year, rocking in its cradle and heralding news of road win after road win. The ringing and happy shouts that accompany it echoed from upper campus down to the river.

Boys Soccer What a season it was for the boys soccer team! The team thrilled us all with a 13-2-4 record, which included a 7-0 win for the Jason Soucek ’92 Classic Soccer game victory. The team ranked #1 throughout the season, and went on to defeat North Cross School 2-1 to win the Virginia Independent School Athletic Association (VISAA) Division II State Soccer Championship!

Head of School Billy Coyle covered the cost of tickets and more than 100 students and faculty enjoyed the win at City Stadium in Richmond. Lots of alumni Seahorses were spotted in the stands as well! Veteran CCS Head Coach Matt Schaefer celebrated his 20th year and was named VISAA Division II Coach-of-the-Year. Senior Ignacio Rodriguez de Torres ’23 (Madrid, Spain) was named VISAA Division II Player-of-theYear. Ignacio was team captain along with legacy John Ball ’23, son of Lewis Ball ’95. Both boys and girls teams enjoyed competition throughout the winter, accelerating their level of play with futsal competition.

Volleyball We welcomed Seahorse Anna Moore ’15 back to campus as our new volleyball coach! The team finished the regular season ranked #8 in the VISAA Division II polls earning a post-season berth at the state quarterfinals.

Football Billy Coyle announced that Hall of Fame Coach Ed Homer will step down as our Head Football Coach after 34 years at the helm. Congratulations to the following players who earned VISAA Division II state recognition: Second Team - Carter Linkletter ’23 RB, Will Biddlecomb ’23 OL, LB; Divine Ibe ’24 DL, and Charlie Hatcher ’23 DB. Honorable Mention Gabe Sheffield ’23 OL, DB; Charlie Hatcher ’23 QB; Cameron McDonald ’23 RB; Keegan Slider ’24 DL; Drew Johnson ’23 LB; Peter Bolanis ’24 DB. Sailing Christchurch was proud to host the Virginia Interscholastic Sailing Association (VISA) regatta at our waterfront and Clyde V. Kelly IV Sailing Pavilion. competed in the school’s boats, which include the Jack Dozier ’65 Fleet of ZIM FJs. Christchurch had its most dominating performance ever, taking first, second, and third place overall. In January, the team traveled to the Rose Bowl National Invitational Regatta in Long Beach, CA. For the first time in the program’s history, CCS sailors won the VISA Girls Sailing State Fleet Racing Championship. Congratulations to Maddie Janzen ’25 and Rosario De Tomas Perello ’23 for this historical accomplishment. Several Seahorses earned ALL-VISA honors. Congratulations to ALL-VISA SKIPPERS Bo Angus ’25, Rafael de Tomas Pereda ’25, Owen Grainger ’24, Maison Koepke ’23, and Jordan Vieira ’24; ALL-VISA CREW Peyton McDonald ’23, Simone Moss ’25, Reid Nelson ’24, and PJ Rodrigues ’24; and ALL-VISA GIRLS CREW Simone Moss ’25.

Boys Basketball The team improved its record over the previous year, and despite a lack of depth, Coach CJ Kelly and the Seahorses delivered a few upset victories, much to the delight of their fans. In one of those, Christchurch trailed Atlantic Shores by 15 points at halftime when the team rallied for an impressive comeback and 7-point victory.

Girls Basketball The girls basketball team qualified for the first round of the VISAA Division II State Championship playoffs. Tri-Captain Emma Najjume ’23 was selected to play for Uganda in the Federation Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) Women’s AfroBasket 2023. Emma was also named to the VISAA Division II All-State Second Team.

Swimming Thirteen Seahorses qualified to compete at the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA Division II) state championship. Coach Dave Cola was pleased that school records were broken consistently throughout the season.

Girls Soccer Coach Schaefer and the girls soccer team finished the regular season ranked #3 in the VISAA Division II with an 11-5-2 record. Our Seahorses advanced to the state championship, where they held the #1-ranked Covenant School to a scoreless game, ultimate losing in Penalty Kicks. Three Seahorses were named to the VISAA Division II All-State Soccer team - Tess Bennett ’23, Khoudia Diagne ’24, and Cece Jablonsky ’25.

Lacrosse The lacrosse thrills started early as Coach John Dehm’s team spent the winter season playing box lacrosse. The Saluda River Rats, as they called themselves, won the NXT East Coach Box Lacrosse Championship! The momentum carried over into the spring season, with the team posting a 13-3 season record and losing by one point to Episcopal High School in the VISAA Division I semi-final game. Congratulations to Carter Linkletter ’23, First Team; Nolan Gilmartin ’23, First Team; and Ries Bower ’23, Second Team, who were named to the All-State Team. Linkletter was named All-American and team captain Grant Sobel ’23 was named All-Academic.

Over the past 34 years at Christchurch, what has changed the most for you?

I worked under four Heads of School, and each had a very different personality. For example, Bob Phipps was very hands-on, while David Charlton was more open to trying things and seeing how they would do. I worked the longest under JEB Byers, and that was also different – especially since some of the biggest changes occurred under his Headship. A few of those changes include going fully co-ed for boarding and day students and launching a new curriculum named Great Journeys, and of course all of the changes and challenges during the pandemic.

What is the best part of retirement?

Being able to spend more time with the love of my life and my wife of 52 years, Helga.

What legacy do you think that you left behind at Christchurch?

Legacy is tough. But, a constant inspiration for me was always thinking ahead and planning for the new (and returning) Seahorse students and families, and I hope that mentality continues.

What are your hopes and wishes for the future of CCS?

EYE ON THE BALL, HEART IN THE GAME

I wish the best for Christchurch as it goes headlong into its second century and beyond.

What is your favorite Christchurch tradition?

The 9th graders getting up extra early in the morning and waiting for the first day of the Christmas Candy Cane Tree.

What was your favorite part of your job?

Baseball!

CELEBRATING DENNIS GUNN WITH A Q&A

Tell us some more about your time with the Baseball team.

I first started coaching the team in the late 80s. When I started, I was lucky to inherit a good team of players, which helped the program get off to a strong start. One of my favorite memories from this time was working with a young Dan Hargett (Class of 1993, former Board of Governors) and watching him beat a prep league team for the first time as our pitcher. And then jumping forward a few years, my proudest moment was probably convincing the first group of female CCS students that they could play on the team instead of having to manage the team.

Did you grow up in the area?

I was born and raised in Gloucester, Virginia.

How many chairs do you think you set up for graduations in your time here?

How did you end up at Christchurch?

I worked at a local place and Christchurch hired Helga (wife) first to run a greenhouse, I then came the following week and was hired for a whopping $5 an hour.

How long did you work at Christchurch?

My estimate is about 26,000! 1,100 a year for 34 years plus all of the Marston set-ups, all of the early years where we would have 100 people at the waterfront and 250 people on the lawn for alumni, plus all the auctions we did in the Phipps Field House.

What is your fondest memory from your time at Christchurch?

To pick out a single moment is difficult. If I had to, though, it would be the relationships and bonds with students and their families that I have made over the past decades and continue to maintain.

What are you most proud of from your time at CCS?

When I came to CCS, one of my first assignments was to clean and repair all of the old/outdated oil fire furnaces heating the main buildings. I had a goal then to get them out so we could replace them with a more efficient and cleaner system, and I achieved it.

You were involved with many Christchurch construction and renovation projects during your tenure. Which was your favorite?

A BRIEF HISTORY

In 2002, after a year of research and planning, the Christchurch School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee was founded by Ed Homer, who was then serving as Athletic Director. The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to celebrate Christchurch’s history and accomplishments, for both individuals and teams.

The first Hall of Fame Committee chair was Dave Alter (Class of 1969).

Dave was consistent and reliable, and he led with measured patience and friendship in all situations. Then, in the fall of 2003, the Committee introduced its first class of inductees to the school’s Hall of Fame.

In 2011, after two years of discussion and reflection, the Hall of Fame Committee concluded that there were many Seahorses who should be recognized for their lifetime achievements. The Committee then subsequently inducted its first class Lifetime Achievement honorees.

In 2018, as Christchurch approached the conclusion of its first 100 years, the Hall of Fame Committee embarked on a new process of recognizing the past, while also celebrating memorable alumni. This revised process has since resulted in a running nominations list of over 50 individuals who are currently being looked at for possible induction.

In the course of more than a century, Seahorses have served honorably and with distinction in five of the six armed forces: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy, as well as the two non-military uniformed services - the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Corps. A memorial honoring Seahorses for their service sits at the base of the flag post on Bell Tower Hill.

HOW ABOUT LUNCH WITH HUNTLEY GALLEHER?

BY JENNIFER HOMER Once upon a time, there was a Blue Ridge Baron who wanted to become a teacher. Not only did that Baron become a teacher, but a lifetime of experiences later, he is a true, blue Seahorse. Huntley Galleher joins a line of iconic school men such as Joe Cameron, Colonel William Nunn, Bob Phipps, Dan Nolan, and Jeb Byers, whose legacy of service and devotion to Christchurch School will be written in the history books. If ever there was a Mr. Christchurch, it is Huntley Galleher.

Originally, Huntley intended to work in the family business, an investment firm in Richmond, VA. Math was his strong suit, so this was a likely outcome. However, a mentor at Blue Ridge School encouraged him to consider a return to his alma mater as a coach, teacher, and Dean of Students. This was a wakeup call for Huntley, and from that moment forward, he was all in. He studied education with an emphasis on math and science at Elon University. His then-girlfriend, Julie Fulgham, knew from the start that both Huntley and boarding school were in her future.

Following his graduation from Elon, Huntley worked for his father while looking for his dream job. A chance encounter at the Richmond Commonwealth Club with the head of Steward School, Paul Cramer, resulted in Huntley working afternoons as varsity tennis coach.

of Students, Summer Programs Director, and Director of Operations. When asked what his favorite role was, Huntley doesn’t hesitate. “All of them. Whatever I was doing, it was my favorite thing.”

In 1988, Huntley and Julie became dorm parents on the school’s newest residential hall, Faye Dormitory. They would bring their newborn son and eventual CCS legacy, Will Galleher ’10, home to the Faye Dorm apartment. The Gallehers demonstrated the power, stability, and strength that families willing to live on a dorm can bring. Over the years, Huntley and Julie mentored many young dorm parents. As a family, the Gallehers were very happy at CCS. Though there were conversations with Blue Ridge over the years and Huntley remained a very active and dedicated alumnus, thoughts of relocating faded. Along the way, Huntley was a trusted advisor to three heads of school before mentoring a young Latin teacher named Jeb Byers, who would become the school’s 17th and longest-serving Head of School.

Eventually, he settled happily and effectively into his role as Associate Director of Alumni Development.

One day in the spring of 1985, Huntley brought the Steward team to Christchurch for a match. Another chance encounter, this time with Admission Director Don Smith and Head of School Bob Phipps, set Huntley on his life’s trajectory. Always a shrewd judge of talent and heart, Phipps brought the freshfaced and eager young Galleher back to campus for a day-long interview. Huntley Galleher was hired. He checked all the boxes.

It is in this role that Galleher’s gifts are most evident. Jack Taylor ’74, former chair of the Hall of Fame committee, says, “The passion that HG has for CCS warms my heart. He keeps me coming back. Huntley shakes hands and kisses babies as well as anyone I’ve ever seen. He has brought a lot of people back to the school who had drifted away. Huntley has worked tirelessly to ensure that Christchurch is a place to go, a place to be proud of. It is because of Huntley that alumni say, yes, I’m proud to be a Seahorse. Huntley built it, and they have come.”

Byers and Huntley worked for 37 years together before Jeb retired. “In the last two decades, Huntley has devoted himself to keeping the larger Christchurch family connected through a demanding schedule of personal visits and events throughout the U.S. for alumni, parents, former faculty and friends of CCS. His encyclopedic memory of alums and their families, his warm personal style, and his willingness to go to any lengths to arrange a visit and reconnect are hallmarks of his loyalty and devotion to the Seahorse nation and his belief in the CCS experience to change and shape young lives for the better,” says Byers.

Huntley’s kindness and generosity are legendary. His energy is inexhaustible. He continues to connect with current students by sharing the school’s history with them, treating them to Krispy Kreme donuts on Founder’s Day, meeting with the seniors before they fly the nest each spring, and in many other ways. Recently, a student took an interest in the resurgence of vinyl records. Huntley went to his basement and gathered a stack of vintage American classics for her growing collection.

This is just one of a million examples of Huntley’s desire to connect and his delight in ensuring that each young person has the wonderful boarding experience he enjoyed.

In 2021, he became the only staff member to receive an honorary Christchurch diploma. The Alumni Council suggested the honor, and the Board of Governors unanimously approved it.

Huntley is proud of the relationships that he has nurtured over the years. He loves to see alums grow and give back, sometimes with incredible gifts to the school. He loves to get on the road to share great stories. “Our Seahorses are proud of their alma mater and consistently continue to make a difference.”

Huntley settled in on Scott Dorm, taught math and science, and coached tennis. “It was a two to threeyear prospect, and then I assumed I would move on to Blue Ridge,” he reflects. But Christchurch and Bob Phipps treated Huntley well. He flourished, and Phipps gave him new challenge after new challenge. His CCS journey would include roles as advisor, weekend duty team leader, Director of Social Activities, Assistant Dean

Kendall Courtney Webre ’01 echoes the sentiment of her fellow Seahorses when she says, “Huntley’s dedication and passion for Christchurch School is evident in all that he does.

The Christchurch community benefits greatly from his service.

I thank him for all he does to keep us coming back to school.

He is a true Seahorse!”

Huntley’s direct connections with former faculty go back to 1985. He developed a very strong relationship with the oldest living faculty member, Bob Goodman. He continued annual lunches with his wife, Ginny, for years after Bob died until she passed away in 2022. Huntley has personally met alumni from as far back as the late 1920s.

Murrell McLeod ’58, who has an extensive relationship with the school, notes that Huntley is reliably upbeat and always has a solution. “He is generous with himself. Huntley Galleher is Christchurch, in my mind.” McLeod makes a critical point, “I believe Huntley could not have accomplished what he has without Julie. She deserves credit for allowing CCS to have as much of Huntley as has been the case.”

Huntley is especially proud of his stewardship of the school’s history. Not only has he lived more than a third of it, but his passion and zest to learn as many details as possible make him the living person with the most knowledge of the school’s one hundred plus years.

Erika Robinson ’10, current Hall of Fame chair, works with Huntley on the Hall of Fame Committee and has experienced firsthand Huntley’s mastery of CCS history. “Mr. Galleher has been such a gem for Christchurch. He has so much knowledge about the history of the school. Whenever I need information, he is readily available to assist. It’s always nice to return to Christchurch and see his face.”

If you ask Huntley about his favorite Christchurch memories, he lights up with the possibilities. His highlights include overseeing, as Director of Operations, the 2000-01 construction of Phipps Field House. “Working with Pete

Huntley treasures the great donor stories and the people, alumni, and past parents who have made transformational gifts to CCS in the last twenty-five years. “These are very, very special people.” Would he do it all again? “Absolutely,” he says.

“From the start to the stop.”

“I like to borrow a phrase from Joe Farrar ’65,” Huntley says. “When I call you for lunch or dinner, I’m not coming necessarily coming to pick your pocket, but to hear your story.”

BY HUNTLEY GALLEHER Rogie has been a passionate advocate and supporter of universal access to quality education for her whole life. Her love for and dedication to this cause, and her willingness to back this passion up with transformational giving, has led Rogie to be identified and celebrated publicly for her long standing commitment to the education of all children.

It was this same passion that led Rogie to decide to establish Christchurch School’s largest general need-based scholarship endowment with a $1M transformational gift. This decision came about during a conversation Rogie was having with her daughter, Kathe Hetzer (past parent of Scott Jr. ’13 and past Board of Governor) about all of the amazing ways CCS meets students where they are while providing a life-changing experience to all students, regardless of their background or prior experience. And so it was from this conversation that the seed was planted with Rogie, and soon after the “WilliamsHetzer Scholarship Endowment for Academic Excellence” was established.

To this end, Rogie states that “through my grandson and his accomplishments, I would like for Christchurch School to continue to support deserving young people who, in the next decade, will be the leaders of this country and possibly even our world.”

Honoring Rogie’s vision, the Williams-Hetzer Scholarship Endowment seeks to “pay it forward” by ensuring that deserving students, who might not otherwise ever be able to attend Christchurch, are able to get that same life changing experience.

Rogie’s transformational gift is inspiring, to educators, parents, students, alumni, and fellow philanthropists. It is also a strong reminder of the importance of a strong endowment. Indeed, a strong endowment is key for future success, as it allows the School to enrich its student body, its programs, and the overall Christchurch experience for all Seahorses near and far.
